Kindness can make the blind see, make the deaf hear, and make the lame walk. Keep in mind: ”Expect what is reasonable; not what is perfect!”

Mortification of the will Being endowed with liberty or freedom doesn’t make a man humane. This is simply because some of our choices are not in accordance with the Will or the Divine Precept. Well, one doesn’t have to be highly educated in order to understand what’s obviously harmful to others. Be guided by what we called Common Sense (though it’s not common).

Logic says: “Never let your passion rule over your reason.” Why? When emotion is on the throne; the reason is overthrown. Try to mortify our will.

Right and Duty Right is not might. Freedom or Liberty is not absolute. You might want to sing and you are free to do that the whole night; yet, also be mindful that your neighbours deserve a good sleep. For every Right, there’s always a corresponding duty or responsibility. We are all free to do whatever is universally and morally upright. Be possessed by your ability to respond. Liberty is everyone’s responsibility.

Pacquiao, a senator of the Philippines who just gave up his sports committee chairmanship in favor of another sportsman senator Bong Go, is fighting Keith Thurman for the WBA super welterweight title on July 20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Thurman, defending his WBA (Super) welterweight title, is undefeated with a perfect 29-0 win-loss card, 22 of which via KOs and our Pambansang Kamao, the WBA (Regular) welterweight title holder, has a 61-7-2 win-lossdraw record, with 39 KOs. Velasco Will Bring New Hope Pinoy Tambayan to Edmonton-Wetaskiwin Basketball League

A

s the Federal Elections draw near it has become clear that Alberta Filipino Journal Editor Lito Velasco is running for nomination to represent EdmontonWetaskiwin under the Liberal Party banner. If Velasco wins the Liberal party nomination then he will be facing Veteran Politician Michael Stanley Lake of the PC party.

Edmonton-Wetaskiwin is the largest constituency in the country with an estimated 160,000 population. Lito, as people call him, has the full support of the various Filipino organizations he has helped throughout the years. Velasco is a natural when it comes to public service. It only takes one call and he is usually there to help or to listen to what people have to say.

If you do not know him, your initial impression would be that he must be a very strict person, but once you get to know him, you will have fun exchanging ideas with Lito.

Velasco can make a room filled with people laugh and he does it naturally. Lito likes to read books and is a highly intellectual person.

Apart from his daily work, he spends most of his time with his kids and serves the community through different organizations.

Early in life, Lito was a political strategist so politics is not new to him. Velasco says incumbent MP Mike Lake of the PC has done his share and it is now time to give other people a chance to show what

Former UCP MLA Prab Gill has sent a letter to the RCMP that alleges the Kenney leadership campaign used fraudulent emails to intercept personal identification numbers

needed to cast a ballot in the race.

The PINS should have been sent to individual member but instead were allegedly used by Kenney’s campaign team to vote for Kenney.

These are very serious allegations, which is why the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service has appointed an out of province prosecutor to provide advice on the ongoing investigation. The UCP has defended their process and says their audit does not show any wrongdoings.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has been quiet about the ongoing investigation. If the RCMP is able to prove the allegations, what will happen to Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and the people of Alberta?

If the allegations are not proven then it is very important for the RCMP and the Premier to report to the people of Alberta so they can clear Jason Kenney's name.

God is Never Wrong There was a king who did not believe in the goodness of God but who had a slave who, in all circumstances, would always say, “My king, do not be discouraged, because everything God does is perfect. He makes no mistakes!”

One day they went hunting and along the way a wild animal attacked the king. His slave managed to kill the animal, but could not prevent his majesty from losing a finger.

Furious and without showing his gratitude for being saved, the king asked "Is God good? If He was good, I would not have been attacked and lost my finger."

The slave replied, "My king, despite all these things, I can only tell you that God is good, and he knows

why these things happened. What God does is perfect. He is never wrong!"

Outraged by the response, the king ordered the arrest of his slave.

Later, the king left for another hunt, this time alone. He was captured by savages who engaged in human sacrifices.

At the altar and ready to sacrifice the king, the savages discovered that their victim did not have one of his fingers. According to them, only a whole person with all of his/her parts intact could be offered to the gods. The king, without a finger, was deemed an abominable sacrifice for their gods. So they released the king.

Upon his return to the palace, the king authorized the release of his slave.

He received the slave affectionately.

He told his slave, "My dear, God was

really good to me! I was almost killed by the wild men, but for lack of a single finger, I was let go! But I have a question: if God is so good, why did he allow me to put you in jail?"

The slave answered, "My King, if I had gone with you on this hunt, I would have been sacrificed instead because I have no missing finger. Remember everything God does is perfect. He is never wrong.

He made you keep me in jail so I would not be with you on the hunt."

Our Lives are full of ups and downs. When things do not turn out the way you want, do NOT lose your love for life, your faith or your belief in the future. As long as we are good people, good things will one day follow. Be Calm. Be Patient and stay Positive. The hardships of today are preparing you for the light of tomorrow.

Often, we complain about life and of the negative things that happen to us. We forget that nothing is random and that everything has a purpose and happens for a reason.

Every morning, offer your day to God; don't be in a rush.

Ask God to inspire your thoughts, guide your actions, and ease your feelings. And do not be afraid. God is never wrong!

eware of false prophets says the Lord. Beware of fake people, who pretend to be someone they are not. How do we identify them?

First, they use God’s name in vain to promote their evil agenda which is usually connected to gaining money and popularity.

Friends, just because you met them at the church does not mean they are the one. Demons go to church too. The grass always looks greener when it is fake. Do not trust everything you see, for even salt looks like sugar.

Second, is that we can identify false prophets through the fruits of their labor. “You will know them by their fruits.” Today, we are reminded to be cautious of people whose actions do not match with their words. Actions

show you who someone really is. Words show you who they pretend to be. False people are like clouds; when they disappear, the day is much brighter.

Finally, trust no one except the Lord because today there are so many fake people around. They may speak like an angel, they may act like a saint and even look heavenly, but deep within they are ravenous wolves. Friends, be yourself because an original is worth more than a copy. Do not pretend to be someone you are not but be someone you would be proud to know. Lord, thank you. I may not be perfect but at least I am not fake.

Sponsor lives outside Canada

M

y husband’s friend who is a Canadian citizen has been living in Thailand for several years now. He got married in Thailand and now wants to sponsor his spouse. He has lived abroad for many years where he operates a small business and has infrequently visited Canada. His question is: can he sponsor his spouse even if he lives outside Canada?

Section 130 (2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) allows Canadian citizens living abroad to sponsor a foreign national as member of the family on the condition that when the foreign national becomes a permanent resident, the sponsor will also reside in Canada.

Based on the above provision, the answer is YES. The provision specifically states: 130 (2) A sponsor who is a Canadian citizen and does not reside in Canada may sponsor a foreign national who makes an application

if the sponsor will reside in Canada when the foreign national becomes a permanent resident.

The goal of the above provision is:

First, by allowing a Canadian citizen living abroad to sponsor their spouse in becoming a permanent resident, the section aims to satisfy the IRPA’s objective of family reunification.

Second, by requiring that the sponsor resides in Canada when the foreign national becomes a permanent resident, the section aims to “avoid sponsorships which would be a form of convenience whereby a Canadian living abroad would sponsor a foreign national and just in fact serve as a courier to bring that foreign national into Canada, or allow a foreign national to enter Canada simply to receive certain benefits.

However, keep in mind that the Sponsor must meet all the eligibility requirements of becoming a Sponsor.

Being a Canadian citizen is just one of the requirements. Most importantly, the Sponsor must demonstrate in the application that he or she can financially support the person/s to be sponsored and to ensure that they don’t need social assistance from the government of Canada.

Farewell from the Faithful Navigator CY2017-2018 & CY2018-2019 - Final Report JAN THE MAN’S NOTE JANUEL CEDRICK IBASCO Januel Cedrick Ibasco is a proud Filipino-Canadian and is currently a student at the University of Alberta studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. Sportsmanship is a big slice of his cake. He is highly-spirited when playing golf, volleyball, and basketball and loves reading, writing and volunteering at church. Jan looks forward to taking up law after his undergraduate degree.

Worthy Sir Knights, Greetings!​ The last two years of being the Faithful Navigator for the St. Michael Assembly No. 2795 has truly been a remarkable experience, one that has taught me many key skills, has brought me a stronger bond with the men I call brothers, and a true testament in my faith and trust in God. Having said this, my final note as Faithful Navigator will be a reflection of the last two years and my new position moving forward with the assembly as Faithful Admiral.

Throughout the past two years, there have been many events that I am proud to have been apart of, but I have narrowed down these events to five notables. The first one I would like to speak of happened in 2017, which was the ‘Patriotic Essay Competition’ with the theme “How Does Remembrance Day make me Patriotic?” with the junior high schools of Father Michael Troy and Lady of Mount Carmel participating. This contest allowed youngsters to take the time and think of the importance of Remembrance Day and our wonderful country, Canada. This essay project, which was conducted by our assembly,

was vital in emphasizing our focus on patriotism.

The next key event I would like to reflect on is the 15th Year Assembly Charter Anniversary and Installation of Assembly Officers in June of 2018 that took place in St. Theresa Roman Catholic Parish.

This momentous celebration was one that brought great joy to our assembly and allowed all of our members to reflect on how far this assembly has come and where it is headed for in the future. Key awards presented that night were as follows: Lifetime Achievement Award: PSD FMFD SK Julito R. Reyes Shining Sir Knights Award: SK Juanito B. Serrano; SK Oscar V. Mejilla; SK Restituto D. Cabalo; SK Rafael F. Ison; and SK Enrique G. Cornel Sir Knights of the Year Award: SK Abel F. Cereno; SK Alexander E. Ibasco; SK Cesar J. Manuntag; SK Albert B. Pinson; and SK Edwin C. Torres The next key initiative that I was a part of during my time as Faithful Navigator was the

review and revision of Assembly Memorial Funds and Assembly Guidelines which occurred during the Columbian Year of 2018-2019.

These guidelines/changes to the assembly were crucial as they now provide a significant piece of criteria that future members can follow.

These guidelines include members’ birthdays, wedding anniversaries, Sir Knight Membership Milestones, new transfers, Honor Guards for Sir Knights and family and many more.

The second last key initiative that took place this past Columbian year was a call to a change in regalia for our Honor Guards. As of July 1st, 2019, the Knights of Columbus will have moved away from the recognizable capes, chapeaus and tuxedo look to a more modernized one. The modernized look will include a beret, Official Fourth Degree Gray trousers, neck tie, beret, metal badge over appropriate colored patch of the office, a plain white dress shirt and few other key accessory notables. The prime reason for this change in appearance is to draw attention to our youth to become more involved and active in the Knights of Columbus. We organized and developed a monthly installment payment plan for all Sir Knight members of our assembly to order their new set of full Honor Guard regalia.

I encourage the members of assembly Color Corps to order their new set of regalia. So we can continue to serve our church, community, country and our great Order with dignity and full colors.

Let us all be proud of our Honour Guards’ numerous services rendered through the past two (2) Columbian Years. With these notes, the very last time we used the old regalia was on Sunday, June 23rd, 2019 during the

Eucharistic Celebration and Feast of Corpus Christi procession from St. Agnes Church to St. Anthony Church. During this event there was first a mass that took place at 5:00 PM followed by the installation of officers. During the installations we were honoured to have our Installing Officer PSD FMFD SK Julito Reyes, Marshall PFN SK Teddy Tuazon, Commander SK Wilnero Caspe, and Faithful Friar Rev. Joby Augustin participating in their key roles for the evening.

Following the installation, we enjoyed a beautiful dinner to end the Columbian Year. To close the CY 2018-2019, we presented the prestigious awards to the following

Lucban, Quezon: A place of colors and harmony

Katrina is a senior high student at St. Francis Xavier High School. She enjoys the beauty of art and creativity. At her young age, she wants to share her travel experiences with others.

Lucban, officially the Municipality of Lucban, is popularly known as the Art Capital of Quezon province.

Why? Because it is where one of the most awaited festivals of the Philippines – the cultural Pahiyas Festival – is celebrated every 15th

of May in honor of San Isidro Labrador, the Farmer.

The Pahiyas Festival is a way for the creative people of Lucban to showcase their homes by filling and decorating them with varying representations of their bountiful

harvest. I remember when my family was able to witness this extraordinary festival. The whole city was filled with music and happiness. It may have been overcrowded, but you will have fun, that is for sure. I

Today, the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure, announced the signing of a bilateral agreement that will provide more than $11.8 billion through the Investing in Canada plan over the next decade in federal funding dedicated to infrastructure projects. The projects supported

through this agreement will have a total value of over $31 billion, including $10 billion committed by the Ontario government. These projects will be cost-shared with the Ontario government, municipalities and other partners.

The whole city is colorful, and you may not want to look away from their lovely houses for fear of missing any details in all the intricate designs. I am very inspired by how the local residents of the city creatively showcase their harvest in sacred honor of San Isidro and to entertain the people who visit to explore their city and to witness the cultural Pahiyas festival. I was extremely pleased and contented because I was able to observe the happiness on the faces of the local people in Lucban. They were rightfully being appreciated and honored because of their extensive work. Their houses may be small, but you can recognize how they are enjoying a life filled with colors and harmony. As a Filipino, I am proud that we are creative in our own ways.

The funding provided under the bilateral agreement also includes up to $660 million committed to the Scarborough Subway Extension project in Toronto, which will be reviewed when formally submitted by the province. The Government of Ontario will continue to work closely with the City of Toronto on this project. The province has already committed to supporting it through previously approved public transit investment funding.

This funding provided to Ontario under the bilateral agreement includes almost $1.5 billion that has been committed through the Investing in Canada plan for the Ottawa Light Rail Transit Stage 2 project and the Port Lands Flood Protection and Enabling Infrastructure project in Toronto.

As part of its infrastructure plan, Ontario is investing $190 billion in public infrastructure over 13 years, starting in 2014–15. This represents the largest infrastructure investment in the province’s history to support priority projects across the province such as roads, bridges, public transit, hospitals and schools.

Some responses on the proposed Occupation Specific Work Permits to force workers to work longer hours, in more dangerous conditions and with lower wages.

I

n May of 2019, migrant workers across Canada arranged meetings with the staff of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and Refugee, Immigration and Citizenship Canada regarding the Occupation Specific Work Permit proposal. Many migrant worker organizations representing the majority of self-organized groups of migrant workers from Canada were part of these meetings. They also collectively submitted a written policy proposal on this and relevant matters on the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

The main concerns covered in these groups meeting included calling for permanent resident status on arrival and open work permits. They also submitted policy recommendations.

The meeting was also to urge RICC and ESDC to remove the Labour Market Impact Assessment requirement from these occupational specific work permits. These organizations across the country have been working together on these policy changes for over a year. The organizations involved, which formed the Migrants Rights Network, are Toronto based Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, Migrante Canada, Migrante BC, Migrante Alberta, Migrante Manitoba, Migrante Ontario, Migrante Ottawa, Migrante Quebec, Association for the Rights of Household & Farm Workers (ARHW) - Montreal, Caregiver Connections Education and Support Organization (CCESO) – Toronto, Caregivers Action Centre – Toronto, Cooper Institute – PEI, FCJ Refugee Centre – Toronto, Immigrant Workers Centre (IWC) Montreal, Income Security Advocacy Centre – Toronto, Migrant Worker Solidarity Network – Manitoba, Migrants Resource Centre Canada – Toronto, PINAY - Quebec, RAMA - Okanagan, Sanctuary Health – Vancouver and Vancouver Committee for Domestic Workers and Caregivers Rights (CDWCR).

Work Permits (Part 1 (vol. 153, no. 25).

(1) Would an occupation-specific work permit increase the likelihood that foreign workers would seek out better job opportunities within their occupation? What barriers to mobility would persist?

By continuing the requirement of a Labour Market Impact Assessment for workers to change jobs, the proposed regulations do not create an occupation-specific work permit, or enhance labour mobility. These proposed regulations largely create opportunities for employers to fill in job vacancies without needing to go through another Labour Market Impact Assessment process.

The following barriers to mobility persist: • There are simply not enough LMIA approved job vacancies • There is no mechanism for workers to be made aware of jobs • This proposal does not in any way resolve exploitation by third party recruiters and consultants as migrant workers will have little choice but to continue using third party recruiters to find new jobs (2) What positive impacts would this occupation-specific work permit have for temporary foreign workers?

What concerns or challenges would it pose, and how could these concerns be mitigated? *** Crosstown Auto Centre topped the women’s division of the 3rd Wefix Automotive Repair-Edson Volleyball Tournament by besting the Red Deer Warriors in five sets, 3-2.

In most cases, employers would be aware that no real opportunities for changing jobs exist within this proposed regulation for most workers.

This, in addition to a lack of any real labour mobility, means that any positive impacts would be negligible.

In addition, workers in the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program, who change jobs using this mechanism have no protection against blacklisting or guarantees that they will be invited back the next year. On June 13, 2019, the federal government announced the creation of occupation specific work permits for care workers through the creation of the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot programs.

These programs do NOT require a Labour Market Impact Assessment.

The organizatons proposed to extend the same program to all workers in Canada on employer specific work permits - but without limiting to an National Occupation Classification (NOC).

(3) What positive or negative impacts would this work permit have for employers and Canadian and permanent resident workers in Canada?

Such an initiative increases the power of employers who can now lay off a worker knowing that they no longer have to go through another Labour Market Impact Assessment process to hire a new worker. This gives additional powers to employers principal Joe Medina for backing their team.

(4) Should there be a designated time period (e.g. first two months after starting a job contract) when foreign workers are not permitted to change jobs?

Employers across Canada make significant investments in hiring, and training their workforce. However, limiting the ability of workers to change or leave jobs is not permissible for residents. Any limits on migrant worker mobility further entrenches indentureship in the program. In addition, as is well documented, many Careworkers are ‘released on arrival’ - that is, no employer exists or work conditions are not as promised, and workers have no jobs as soon as they arrive.

(5) Would additional supports be required to help temporary foreign workers find a new employer in Canada with a valid Labour Market Impact Assessment in their occupation? If so, what kind of supports should be considered and who should provide them?

Canada needs a federal job bank that allows migrant workers (in and out of the country) to match with potential employers, at any time. Such a job bank was proposed by migrant care workers in November 2018. By controlling employer registration on such a job bank, pertinent departments can track labour market needs, collect administration fees, and track employers. Creating a special job bank for employers and workers under the TFWP could potentially provide a way to reduce exploitation by recruiters and agencies. Potential migrant workers can use the job bank to directly connect with an employer without going through third party recruiters or consultants.

(6) With greater mobility of foreign workers, what kind of mechanisms should the departments consider to track foreign workers and their new employers for compliance purposes?

In the meetings, ESDC said that Fitness to help spread the martial art to Albertans. Masters Aderlyn Rubante, 2nd Dan blackbelt, and Jerry Fornolles, 4th Dan blackbelt, are now part of the team of instructors.

by Steve's grandfather and grandmaster Casimiro “Chingi” Grandeza, is now on its second year and Master Steve with the assistance of his long-time student and fellow instructor Roman Cuison, who is based at the Motion Fitness in Saskatoon, were able to conduct the first Gan Soo Do examination last year.

And for this year, on June 29 at the Motion Fitness Red Deer, Rubante, Fornolles and Grandeza were able to hold another Gan Soo Do examination to their Canadian students.

if migrant workers were to work in jobs without LMIAs, ESDC would not be able to adequately protect workers. However, ESDC does not have the regulatory authority to protect workers whose labour and human rights have been violated.

For the overwhelming majority of workers, labour law and employment standards law falls under the purview of provincial labour departments with a system where workers can make complaints, and a remediation system through which workers can gain access to justice. The ESDC does not have any of these systems, and lacks jurisdiction to enforce provincial laws. A new system of federal and provincial cooperation would be needed to protect workers’ rights.

If ensuring labour rights protections requires knowing which employers have hired migrant workers, this goal could be achieved by requiring employers to register following a worker hiring.

(7) Is there a need to clarify or amend the responsibilities of employers and foreign workers in light of this new work permit?

Canada must work with provinces to create a publicly available recruiter registry, with joint and several financial liability between employers and recruiters. Such a system would ensure that employers only work through registered recruiters who are not charging fees from workers, and that workers have access to such a registry so as to ensure that they are working with legitimate recruiters.

(8) Are there particular considerations for specific Temporary Foreign Worker Program Streams that need to be taken into account when designing an occupation-specific work permit?

As outlined above, migrant workers in the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program require certainty of protection from blacklisting, and are guaranteed being invited back, as not doing so would mean that most workers will not be able to come back in the future.

Karilagan Dance Society represents Canada at Dance Grand Prix Italia 2019

Karilagan Dance Society of Edmonton represented Canada at the Dance Grand Prix Italia 2019 competition from June 17 to 21, 2019 and took home two gold awards: Best Ethnic Dance Group and Best Pedagogy Award. There were twelve countries that participated in this competition, including the USA, South Africa, Mexico, Finland, England, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Brazil, Italy, Canada and Sweden. There were 100 entries performing per day, over the course of two days.

The organizer of the Dance Grand Prix Italia is also the one in charge of the Barcelona International Dance Competition

Congratulations Karilagan Dance Society for bringing home two Prestigious Awards (1st in Ethnic division and 1st in Pedagogy), from the Dance Grand Prix Italia 2019 held in Cesenatico, Italy last June 2019.

where Karilagan competed in 2010 and took home three gold trophies: Best Ethnic Dance Group, Best Costume and Best Pedagogy Award. That year, KDS left their bamboo poles in the theater because there was no more time to ship them through cargo. In 2011, Mr. Giorgio Mordenti, the organizer of the dance competition invited them to compete in Italy and advised them that he kept the bamboo poles. Since 2011, KDS has received an invitation every year, and this year, they decided to accept it. Mr. Mordenti was so happy to see them and so excited to watch KDS dancers performing “Singkil”, “Tinikling”, “Bumayah” and “Paunjalay”.

On July 10, Premier Kenney fulfilled another campaign promise by leading Canadian premiers in an important discussion on the Pan-Canadian Framework for the Assessment and Recognition of Foreign Qualifications.

“Promise made, promise kept. It’s time to make the ‘doctors driving cabs’ problem a thing of the past. Everyone deserves to work in the job they trained for. That’s why I’m proud to ensure the voices of newcomers are heard at this table and across the country.”

When Prestige Vision's Joy Codizal asked the father, Johann Niere if his daughter can sing, the young Niere belted "Bang Bang" by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj that impressed Codizal who immediately informed his wife Eden and Elvie Chua of the E&E Entertainment about his latest talent discovery.

And so Niere, along with other local talents, took part in the Anson Chua & Friends Talent Show, July 14, at the Royal Palace. The Alberta Filipino Journal was one of the sponsors.

ANCOP International Canada Inc. congratulated Alberta-based company, Quality Care Group of Companies for successfully sponsoring Aivie Tesocan.

Tesocan just finished her Public Administration degree at the Camiguin Polytechnic State College.

I

must admit that when I was informed that Yeng Constantino was the selected artist to grace the Edmonton Filipino Fiesta through the auspices of TFC (The Filipino Channel) Canada, I did not know much about her. I came to the realization of just how big and significant she is by gauging the public’s reaction to the announcement of her participation at the Fiesta. You could feel people shaking with excitement and hyped up through social media posts. I was getting calls from outside of Edmonton asking for details, as they were driving to Edmonton from as far away as BC. People were also willing to shell out money for a chance to see Yeng live

and were just too happy to learn that it was open to the public.

Once the excitement of the news of her performance waned, we buckled down to prepare for her arrival - i.e. performance stage, adjunctive activities, programming, and what seemed to be the most pressing one, security and safety in terms of crowd control. Call me naive but I had a thought that the concern was a little bit overplayed.

I recall stories of sightings of Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Ed Sheeran and Sarah Jessica Parker at the West Edmonton Mall; of Stephen Tyler at Churchill Square; Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez around downtown and of people maintaining distance and respecting their privacy. I was constantly told - “Well, it seems it’s a different story with Filipinos.” And judging from what actually transpired, Filipinos do love and go crazy over their local celebrities.

Yeng Constantino is a singersongwriter, host and actor. She is dubbed the Pop Rock Princess.

Her breakout moment in the music industry was bagging the Grand Star

Dreamer in the inaugural season of Pinoy Dream Academy in 2006. She has recorded several platinum albums and is the singer and songwriter for the hits “Hawak Kamay”, “Ikaw” and “Salamat”.

Yeng arrived in Edmonton from Manila close to midnight on June 21. On June 22, running on just three hours of sleep, she engaged in a Philippine Arts Council Learning Table session with students and young artists in the morning, and a TFC Hour performance at the Edmonton Filipino Fiesta in the evening. From the Fiesta, she went straight to the airport and headed to Surrey for another Fiesta/Philippine Heritage

Month celebration on June 23. The following day, June 24, she flew back to Manila. Apparently, this kind of schedule is not out of the norm for her. She travels a lot and in fact, finds the buzz of the plane or the car as a calming, and at times, inspiring sound for her. Some of her songs were written during these times. With this hectic schedule, Yeng remains a true professional in her engagements.

Before her arrival in Edmonton, I did some research on her and watched some of her vlogs to get a sense of her personality. Meeting Yeng at her hotel room, I was amused at how quickly she transformed from a worried professional suffering

from a sleepless night, to an ecstatic fan when presented with Raptors merchandise. I was surprised to learn that she was nervous about The Learning Table, and anxious about not meeting people’s expectations.

There was nothing for her to worry about and I gave the assurance that the intent is to learn from her, that the participants are eager to know more about her, to present herself as she is, and just be her own person.

And boy, did she do that and more.

Yeng was genuine in her sharing and rapport with the participants.

She was vulnerable and revealed her insecurities. She was also greathearted in sharing how she coped with uncertainties, in responding to the questions, and giving advice. A majority of the participants for The Learning Table were regulars of previous The Learning Table sessions and projects of the Philippine Arts Council so they are not easily fazed and can sometimes be jaded. But never have I seen them more star struck than during this one with Yeng. continued on page 15 ►

Artospective - an artist’s point of view Her appearance at the Edmonton Filipino Fiesta for the TFC Hour was both record breaking and refreshing. It was heartwarming to see the overwhelming crowd just having a really good time. They were enamoured and in high spirits. Yeng had good banter with her audience and hosts, and was gracious even when faced with technical difficulties.

Her singing, needless to say, was exceptional. Yeng was running on a tight schedule, yet she somehow managed to suspend time by singing an extra song from her playlist, and engaging in conversations with fans during the Meet and Greet just before heading to the airport.

And this is Yeng’s appeal. Apart from her undeniable talent, she is right off the bat charming and down to earth. A person who is deeply spiritual and emotional, knows her boundaries, and values her authenticity. From this experience, I have gleaned that Filipinos do really love and adore a role model hailing from the home country. It is good to see that all this fawning and adulation is for someone truly deserving of all these. Yeng’s visit to Edmonton was courtesy of TFC Canada - true to their vision of bringing joy to Filipinos wherever they are, in the spirit of “Kapamilya”.

Rizalenos Family and Friends Annual Camping

A

yearly camping activity of Rizalenos (Filipino/ Canadian families who hail from different towns in the Rizal province) was held in Miquelon Lake Provincial Park from July 12-14, 2019. The activity was a big success with the leadership of their president Feling de Castro and Mother Nature was kind enough to give only a bit of rain during the

night. There were a lot of food, lots of laughter and parlour games for the kids and adults alike.

A big thank you from Sama Sama Together WOW (SST WOW) group of Edmonton for their hospitality.

The get-together was also graced by the presence of Mr. Jun Angeles and his wife Hermie Angeles (Alberta Filipino Journal Publisher). Everyone enjoyed the three days of camping.

Resources to help you be Environmentally Friendly

nvironmental issues are a hot topic these days, usually from two angles: reducing waste and reducing the use of resources.

Below is a list of a few resources to start, as being more informed can help us be more effective in achieving these goals.

Going Beyond the Home: Initiatives to Contribute To 1. Boomerang Bags: For those of you who, like me, took Home Economics classes as a child, here’s a great opportunity to use those skills and make a difference. The Boomerang Bags program, with the help of volunteers, makes cloth grocery bags available for free at local stores, so that customers can use

On Managing Waste and Recycling 1. Waste Free Edmonton: Waste Free Edmonton is an interesting local initiative that helps raise awareness for creative ways to reduce the amount of garbage you produce.

The website is www.wastefree.ca and you can also follow their very active Facebook and Twitter pages.

2. City of Edmonton App’ WasteWise’: While most homes would have the two-page colorful charts that help us with sorting our garbage, there is an app and a website that can help with this as well. The WasteWise app from the City of Edmonton is available both for Android and Apple smartphones. Information on waste sorting, garbage collection dates and more are available right on your screens and at your fingertips.

Just search ‘City of Edmonton WasteWise’ on your computer or your phone’s app store.

3. Edmonton Eco Stations and Reuse Centres: There are a lot of items that don’t have to be thrown into the garbage bin and landfills right away, such as old furniture, bottle caps, electronics, or halfempty cans of paint. Bringing them to Eco Stations or Reuse Centres, which are services from the city, is worth looking into when doing your spring cleaning. 3. Community Garage Sales: The good old fashioned garage sale is another great way to buy pre-loved items for cheaper. Walking around your neighbourhood during the weekends can help you spot one, and subscribing to your community league’s newsletter or online pages can keep you updated on when they will take place.

Fr. Nilo Macapinlac: Going To Olds; But Not Feeling Old! WETASKIWIN, July 7, 2019 - An Appreciation Farewell Dinner was organized for Fr. Nilo Macapinlac by the Sacred Heart of Jesus’ Parishioners. It was well attended by Fr. Nilo Macapinlac’s friends from different sectors, including the First Nations.

Very visible were Lito Velasco - representing the Alberta Filipino Journal, DJs Rolan Latorre and Jo-Ann Aguilar of 101.7 World FM, also known as Himig Pinoy, Fr. Silvio Lakar, a retired but not yet tired priest, ate Eloisa and husband Ron Lao, ate Josie and husband Kim Yee, ate Connie Dinaano who organized the event, Tem Limbaga and Noli Calina who are the President and Former President of the Wetaskiwin Filipino Organization/Foundation respectively. Heartfelt expressions of gratitude from different groups and individuals were delivered as forms of appreciation to the Christ-like mission Fr. Nilo accomplished during his stay in the parish.

Deus Caritas est Foundation of the Philippines also joined Fr. Nilo as he thanked the parishioners he served for a long time.

Still, he invites everyone to pay him a visit to his new parish assignment at Olds, Alberta, Canada.

A Word For Servants About The Coming Lord OUR TEXT LUKE 12:35-40 35 ”Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning.

36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched , and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of Man cometh at an hour when ye think not.”

QUICK REVIEW WHAT IS A SERVANT? The Greek word for servant is diakonos [deacon] which properly means “to kick up dust”, as one running an errand.

The legal meaning of “servant” is one over whom the Master has control. Any person subject to the orders of another while acting pursuant to such orders is a servant.

Tito S. Venida is a product of the University of the Philippines. He used to be a studentleader during his college days and became one of the founders of the Tau Gamna Phi, one of the world leading Philippine-produced fraternities. His immensurable love for the human race has brought him to the conviction of translating his mission from fraternity into Divinity-from a mere brotherhood into sainthood. Tito authored a book entitled Quocunque Jeceris Stabit, which means, wherever you throw, it will stand.

The relationship of “master” and “servant” depends, not on the exercise of control over work, but the right to exercise such control.

The test of who is a “servant” is whether the work is rendered by one whose physical conduct, time, and activities in performance of duties are controlled, or are subject to the right of control by the Master.

The word “goodman” in verse 39 means the master of a household; husband. A familiar appellation of civility, equivalent to “My friend”, “Good sir”, “Mister,”—sometimes used ironically.

consists of two short teaching parables.

Both give advice to servants concerning the return of the Lord.

Here, we see, that a servant must: 1) be prepared or be ready; 2) be prepared for the Lord’s unexpected return from a wedding feast; and 3) be prepared for the unexpected break-in of a thief.

The “wakeful” servant is the “blessed” servant, for the Son of Man will return unexpectedly. There will be no time to get ready in that day, and speculation over when that might be is fruitless, so be prepared to meet Him!

This passage falls within a wider section that deals with the coming of the kingdom and judgment (Luke 12:35-13:21).

Unlike the following episode which encourages church ministers to serve faithfully, (Luke 12:41-48), this particular episode is addressed to all believers and encourages readiness and wakefulness.

A Judgment Theme Dominates The Section Luke 12:35-13:21 Here, we see Jesus just answered a question over inheritance rights and this leads to the observation that “life does not consist in the abundance of possessions”, given that the person who dies with the most toys doesn’t actually win!

The person who wins, the person who is most secured, is the person who seeks the kingdom, (v. 31), whose treasure is in heaven, (v.

33).The nature of this readiness is shaped by the preceding passage, Luke 12:22-34. The call to readiness is linked to the unexpected coming of the Son of Man, v. 40.

BE READY FOR THE COMING LORD V. 35 The cross-reference of this verse is found in 1 Peter 1:13 which says, “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto

you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

We have: 1. A journey to go; 2. A race to run; 3. A warfare to accomplish, and 4. A great work to do.

Be Sober!

That is, be vigilant against all your spiritual hazards and foes, and be temperate and modest in eating, drinking, apparel, recreation, business, and in the whole of your behavior.

Be sober-minded also in opinion, as well as in practice, and humble in your judgment of yourselves.

“And hope to the end, for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Hope perfectly, trust without doubting to that grace which is now offered to you by the Gospel.

Learn And Put These To Mind: 1. The main work of a servant of the Lord lies in the right management of his heart and mind; 2. The faithful servants have a need to be exhorted to sobriety; 3. A servant’s work is not over as soon as he has gone into a state of grace; and 4. A strong and perfect trust in God’s grace is very consistent with our best endeavors in our duty.

Therefore, the security of an authentic Christian life is found in the kingdom of God, not in the things of this world.

Required dimension of columns base from preliminary design were noted if it will not significantly affect the wall thickness and the architect’s intention of the design. Depth of beams, joist and slab were initially taken from my initial design and counterchecks to the architect’s elevation drawings if this will not affect their design. After all the basic requirements are coordinated to different discipline, detailed calculations will be done and coordinated to the structural designer for detail drawings. Once the final drawings are issued for bid, contractors issue a request for information (RFI) or request for clarification on the design wherein they can save more on the project cost. Filharmonic is an LA-based a cappella group of young Filipino-Americans. They previously competed in NBC’s televised musical competition, The Sing-Off, and have continued to build on their success as they have come out with albums, are going on tour in 2019, and so much more. In this article, I had the privilege of getting to interview their vocal bass, Jules Cruz.

What made you start singing? You were previously a train conductor, a sandwich artist, and a wildlife sanctuary attendant. Amongst the array of things, what made singing stick for you as a career?

school and I got into choir by accident.

I didn’t really mean to join it, but I ended up loving it. And then the reason I moved to California from Las Vegas was because I got recruited to join [a] choir out there at Mt. San Antonio Sollege.

That’s where I met Nico and Joe and we started this group and we met the other guys. Yeah, it’s just been a really weird sight. I wasn’t planning on doing music professionally. It was just a hobby of mine and this kind of opportunity with the group kind of fell into my lap so I’ve been doing it ever since.”

If you hadn’t become a singer, what would you have been?

“When I had stopped doing music, I had

convinced myself that I didn’t wanna spend so much time on music anymore if I didn’t see myself doing it as a career.

I was doing environmental science in school and I really wanted to do more conservation work. I think it’s been really important to me to be involved in the scientific community so I was doing that and I still plan on doing that, eventually.

Once I have more time away from music, I think that’s what I’m gonna do next.”

Has being Filipino impacted your work? What’s life like as a young Filipino-American artist? “​ So when we started our group, we made a very conscious effort to make it about Filipino culture. We wanted to make sure that ‘Filipino’ was in our name [and] that’s why we named ourselves ‘Filharmonic.’ It was really important to us to not shy away from it. Sometimes, I feel like some Filipino artists want to find their way into the American mainstream so they kind of get away from being Filipino, but we thought, ‘No, we’re going to do what we can to express our culture while trying to reach that same success.’ So, I think that being in the Filipino community--it’s been really heartwarming to see people come to our shows and to just be invited to all these Filipino events and it’s definitely an honour to be able to say that we’re from the Filipino community.”

I value lessons learned during the implementation of the project. I keep record of lessons learned and make a continuous review so as not to repeat the same error that might affect the outcome of other projects.

Electronic copies are provided in the share folder of our department to ensure easy access among my peers for any eventual checking and comments. All lessons learned from past projects are recorded and I make sure that these were checked on the on-going project design process. Sketches, notes, comments and checklists were kept in a separate folder for future reference.

What’s a piece of advice you have for aspiring singers? ​“I would say that treating singing like a sport is probably really important.

Realizing that it’s your body and training it constantly every single day and practicing what you want it to do. And, being really organized about it, I think that’s really important, in terms of developing your voice and wanting to be a good singer.

As far as wanting to do it full-time and hav[ing] some sort of success doing it, I would say [you should] surround yourself with people who inspire you and who are really positive and believe in you the same way you believe in yourself, and I think you’ll probably make it.”

What’s your personal favourite piece that you’ve done and why? (My personal favourite was “I’m Alright” from The Sing-Off) ​I like, for sentimental reasons, Treasure [by Bruno Mars]. [It] was the first song we

I always attend regular technical meetings between different disciplines and the client for coordination during and after the design process. Verbal coordination during site visits and site walk-through between me and the contractors are my usual site scenario which form part of my job.

Interpreting code provisions need a lot of understanding of the English Language. I interpreted survey reports and geotechnical reports before I start the design process. The accurate interpretation of these reports will result in a precise design output.

Are there any future projects of Filharmonic’s that we should look out for? ​Yeah! Right now we’re releasing videos every Friday [on our YouTube Channel called The Filharmonic]. We’re calling it ‘Filharmonic Fridays’ and just having YouTube videos for the summer. After [this summer], we’re gonna keep doing our thing and we can’t wait to come out [to Edmonton] and perform [in May 2019]. Hopefully we get more shows out there in Canada because this’ll actually be our first show in Canada! [...] I’m really excited to go and hopefully that means we’ll get more shows around there.

Our Impact on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Issue The MMIWG (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls) report came out this month, and there is a lot of anguish over it. A quick summary is that there are multiple cases across Canada which involve the death or disappearance of Indigenous women, but which authorities say were not due to foul play. The high numbers of cases, and how it disproportionally affects Indigenous women and girls in the US and Canada, prompted groups to ask the government for action.

From 2001 to 2015, the homicide rate for Indigenous women in Canada was almost six times higher than the homicide rate for nonIndigenous women, representing "4.82 per 100,000 of the population versus 0.82 per 100,000 of the population". In Nunavut, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and in the provinces of Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan, the over-representation of Indigenous women among homicide victims was even higher.

My first experience with the matter was when I saw the Red Dress project at the University of Alberta around 2011. During the winter semester, bright red dresses were hung on barren trees around the school grounds, a stark contrast of colour against the gray sky, bare branches and white snow. Or perhaps you suspect that they were abducted or killed, and you are left feeling that your case was not supported or taken seriously.

That is what the red dresses aim to represent.

As immigrants, we come to Canada at different times in our lives. It is likely that we learn about this country’s history and current events in a limited way and we may forget most of those facts after we pass our citizenship test. It is also likely that we end up prioritizing facing our own personal struggles, and as a result, it becomes difficult

THE BLESSED SERVANTS V. 37-38 At this point, we move into application since it does not describe the “the blessed servants’” V. 37-38, normal behavior toward a master,” nor even a special reward for duty, but only the exceptional behavior of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Blessed are those servants…”

Those who are ready for the Lord’s return, who has maintained their faith in Christ, are indeed “blessed,” for they will receive the blessings of the kingdom.

“Blessed are those servants,” who, after having waited long, continue in a waiting frame, until the hour that their Lord comes, and are then found awake and aware of His first approach, of His first knock, and again in v. 38.

“Blessed are those servants”, for then will be the time of their preferment. Here is such an instance of honor done them as is scarcely to be found among men: He will make them sit down to meat, and will serve them.”

For the bridegroom to wait upon his bride at the table is not uncommon, but to wait upon his servants is not the manner of men; yet the Lord Jesus Christ was among His disciples as one that served, and did once, to show His condescension, gird Himself and serve them, when He washed their feet(John 13:4-5).

It is really no one’s fault, but even in the Philippines we don’t do a great job of supporting Indigenous people’s issues. It is not surprising to feel unsure of whether we can even do anything about this very serious issue. Here is what we can do and what I encourage every single immigrant to do: Learn about the history of this country from all angles. One good resource I found is the 10-episode series that CBC released for Canada 150 a few years ago, a 10-episode series called Canada: The Story of Us. It’s available online even now.

Attending events, workshops and visiting resource booths hosted by Indigenous organizations are also very valuable.

Don’t believe in stereotypes. The first stereotype about Indigenous peoples I heard was from my Filipino uncle of all people! He warned me to be careful when in downtown because of the “sketchy native people”. We don’t appreciate the over-simplification of who we are and that of the people from our country and it’s the same thing for Indigenous peoples. Take the time to identify how many tribes are in your province, for instance, learn the difference between the Metis, Cree, and other groups.

Initiate and participate in Indigenous Awareness Training in your workplace or organizations.

This is particularly important for every government department and social service agency. I am fortunate to have attended a few these at

my workplace, and that there are Indigenous organizations that are willing to host a session, which can range from a few hours to a few days. The impact of Residential Schools, the 60’s scoop, the treaties, how reserves are established, and the social norms and spirituality of the Indigenous peoples are all valuable to learn. Learning more about all of this can help us be empathetic and also more effective, when we have Indigenous peoples as clients, partners, or supporters in whatever we do.

Colonization is something that we Filipinos are familiar with.

It’s valuable to learn about what happened here and how it impacts events and people to this day. It is also vital to learn how to live and love this country that we now call home, by learning and actively participating in resolving its social and economic issues.

Bong Go files pet bills on Malasakit Centers, Department of Overseas Filipinos MANILA -- Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Tuesday filed his first 10 pet bills aimed at achieving “genuine positive change” felt by all Filipinos for the first regular session of the 18th Congress.

Topping Go’s priority legislation is a bill that seeks to institutionalize the establishment of Malasakit Centers in more provinces and strategic urban centers in the country to make quality healthcare more affordable and accessible.

Go noted that Malasakit Centers will be a one-stop shop for medical and financial assistance and a health care processing center for patient assistance to complement the implementation of Universal Healthcare Law. “Kapag na isa ba tas po ang pagtataguyod ng Malasakit

Center, mas maraming pasyenteng matutulungan lalo na yung mga nasa probinsya at malalayong lugar (If the institutionalization of Malasakit Centers is enacted into law, more patients would receive financial and medical assistance, especially those in the provinces and far-flung areas),” Go said.

Go also filed a bill reinstating the death penalty for certain heinous crimes, involving dangerous drugs and plunder.

The penalty imposed under the proposed law shall be carried out through lethal injection.

The neophyte senator is pushing for the establishment of the Department of Overseas Filipinos that would serve as a one-stop-shop in providing legal assistance for OFWs in distress.

He also filed a Senate resolution to form a committee that will handle legislative concerns related to overseas employment, migrant workers and the welfare and protection of overseas Filipino communities.

“Napapanahon na tutukan ng Senado ang ating mga overseas Filipinos sa kabila ng kanilang sakripisyo para sa kanilang pamilya at sa kanilang kontribusyon sa ating ekonomiya (It is timely for the Senate to focus on the needs of our overseas Filipinos, who have sacrificed a lot for their families and contributed significantly to our economy),” Go said.

Aside from the creation of a new department for OFWs, Go is also batting for the creation of the Department of Disaster Resilience, which shall concentrate on disaster risk reduction, disaster preparedness and response, and recovery and building forward better.

For fire incidents in the country, he filed a Fire Protection Modernization bill, which seeks to modernize the Bureau of Fire Protection by hiring more personnel, acquiring modern fire equipment, and training firefighters, among others.

Meanwhile, Go’s National Housing Development, Production, and Financing Bill seeks to reduce the country’s housing backlog by providing continuous funding support

to implement the major components of the National Housing Development, Production, and Financing Program of the Duterte administration.

Other priority bills that Go filed include the increase in the salaries of all government workers, better benefits for solo parents and their children, and the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections slated this May 2020 to October of 2022.

Duterte hands Mislatel Consortium permit to operate as 3rd telco MANILA -- Filipinos will soon experience improved Internet services after President Rodrigo Duterte, on Monday, formally awarded Mislatel Consortium, the country’s third mobile player, its permit to operate.

Mislatel Consortium--a group led by Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy, is composed of Udenna Corporation, Chelsea Logistics, Infrastructure Holdings Corporation, and China Telecommunications Corporation.

Udenna and Chelsea would control 60 percent of the venture while China Telecommunications will have the remaining 40 percent.

In a ceremony at Malacañan Palace, Duterte handed the permit to operate or certificate of public convenience and necessity (CPCN) to Uy. Information and Communications Technology Secretary Gringo Honasan

witnessed the handover of the permit to operate.

Duterte, in his speech, described the entry of Mislatel Consortium as

a “milestone” in government efforts to provide fast, reliable, secure, and more affordable telecommunication services to the public.

He urged Mislatel Consortium to “break the prevailing duopoly in the telecommunications industry” and fulfill their commitment to provide better telco services to Filipinos.

The President also encouraged Filipinos to take advantage of the opportunities that will arise from a better telecommunications industry.

“Expand your businesses, engage in online jobs, avail of online learning and training opportunities, and participate in productive public discussions,” Duterte said.

“Now that we are moving forward to a greater capacity in information and communications technology, we will have a better opportunity to improve our personal, social, political and economic aspirations,” he added.

The awarding of Mislatel Consortium’s permit to operate comes after it complied with the requirement of PHP10 billion in

additional paid-in capital and the submission of a performance bond.

According to a release from Mislatel Consortium, it will first conduct a pilot user program late this year to test the network.

Mislatel Consortium will launch only 4G services and will no longer offer legacy 2G and 3G systems.

Earlier, Mislatel Consortium vowed to offer 55 Mbps of Internet speed that covers 84.01 percent of the population in five years and 27 Mbps in the first year alone.

It intends to spend PHP257 billion in infrastructure and service rollout during the same period and provide 30 percent coverage in the first year alone.

The release also bared that Mislatel Consortium was renamed as Dito Telecommunity Corporation. (PNA)

PH economy to rebound, grow 6-6.5% by year-end: FMIC

MANILA -- The investment banking arm of the Metrobank Group expects the country’s economy to rebound in the second half of 2019 and grow by 6 to 6.5 percent by year-end, on the back of healthy government spending and easing inflation.

Rabboni Francis Arjonillo said the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) could expand by 6.5 to 7 percent in the second half after slowing to 5.6 percent in the first quarter.

“The catch-up plan of the government to bring infrastructure spending to 5.2 percent of GDP is very encouraging and would strongly

support our growth expectation,” he said in a press briefing.

Arjonillo said robust domestic demand, solid investment spending, and decelerating inflation which will provide the stimulus for consumer spending, could also drive economic growth.

University of Asia and the Pacific (UAP) economist Dr. Victor Abola said the approval of the budget for 2019 “opens the gate” for the government to catch-up on its plans to spend.

“I’m not very worried about the oil situation because the reality is quite different from 2008 when OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) had very little spare capacity,” he said, noting that OPEC and some top oil producers currently have a lot of spare capacity.

Abola said the inflation rate is projected to decelerate from 2.7 to 3 percent this year, as weaker crude oil prices and lower food prices drive inflation further down.

He considered the Philippine

economic slowdown in the first quarter of 5.6 percent a “blip”.

The re-enacted budget slowed the pace of economic growth in January to March.

The FMIC further said tourism is an additional catalyst that will propel growth. Tourist arrivals in the first four months of the year rose by 8.5 percent to 2.87 million and are expected to increase to 8.2 million by year-end.

Due to the global economic slowdown amidst the US-China trade war, exports are expected to grow weaker at 2 to 6 percent.

Imports will continue to outpace exports and are anticipated to sustain a double-digit growth of 10 to 14 percent on the back of strong government infrastructure spending and private investments.

Arjonillo believes the USChina trade war is not a “bane” to the Philippines.

“We are not totally dependent on exports. We are service-led, our domestic consumption is what fuels

the economy. Our government spending is what fuels the economy so I think the trade war will not mean to us relative to how it is impacting exporting countries like Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Korea, these are the ones that will get hit hard,” he told reporters.

The Philippine peso will remain under pressure for the rest of the year and is estimated to trade at PHP52 to PHP53 to a dollar. It will depreciate slightly due to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ reduction in reserve requirement ratio (RRR) and measures to rebuild its gross international reserves. (PNA)

It was fun celebrating the birthdays of the Angeles sisters. It's summertime and guests and friends frolicked under the sun. Taking advantage of the great weather at the pool and having fun on the slides made the party more enjoyable. Nash Araullo Turns 7 This little wonder boy superbly entertained his visitors last July 7, 2019 at Belmead Community Centre in Edmonton during the celebration of his 7th birthday. His capacity to act like a real Master of the Ceremony truly captured the attention of his audience. His parents Wowie and Gigi are his first avid fans. Salute birthday boy!

Kayla’s First Decade

Kayla Witworth (wearing a white sweatshirt in the first photo and wearing red pyjamas in the second photo) was thrown a birthday bash last 28th of June 2019 by her very loving mother Janice and her grandmother, Tess Viola Guillen. A joyful heart was visible on Kayla’s face as she was joined and greeted by her friends and cousins.

Sixth Decade of Faithfulness Milagros and Apolinar Pedron, known as Nanay Mely and Tatay Poly, celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary at the South Edmonton Sejong Multicultural Centre. The couple got married sixty (60) years ago in Barangay Botocan, Majayjay, Laguna in 1959. They have been blessed with seven (7) children, five (5) girls and two (2) boys, who are also enjoying families of their own.
