Strikes and scandals leave UCP reeling

N

OW is as good a time as any to start looking hard at what our provincial leaders have done, and continue to do, and whether the UCP is fit to lead Alberta to a future full of uncertainty and strife.

The ongoing strike by teachers, scandals at the Alberta Health Service, and controversy over how Danielle Smith appears to be so enamored by the MAGA

ideology are unsettling Albertans.

As this publication’s latest issue goes to press, teachers and the Alberta government are headed back to the bargaining table to try to resolve the crippling strike that is impacting more than 700,000 students in about 2,500 schools. Teachers are seeking pay hikes and more investments in classroom supports. The Alberta government offered a 12%-pay

increase and a commitment to hire 3,000 additional teachers over three years to address classroom crowding, among others. Teachers rejected the offers.

Observers say the positions of the two parties are too far apart that it will require some kind of exceptional negotiations—and a lot of give-and-take—for the conflict to be resolved and the

strike called off. At the moment, it seems unlikely that teachers and the government will even find any kind of common ground to take negotiations to another level.

The public has already voiced its support for the teachers, and the UCP-dominated provincial government will be hard-pressed to push its agenda forward. The provincial government has spent

millions fighting Ottawa over a host of issues, and funding the Alberta Next project that promotes separatism, and even a band-aid measure that offers $30 per child aged 12 and under per day while the strike is on, merely highlight the priorities of the UCP. The provincial government also announced that it expects to receive a final report from the investigation into allegations of corruption over health contracts for children’s medications and surgeries by for-profit providers.

The scandal blew up after former AHS head Athana Mentzelopoulos filed a wrongful dismissal lawsuit where she alleged that senior government individuals interfered in overpriced deals for private surgical companies and medical suppliers.

The UCP has denied any wrongdoing, and claimed Mentzelopoulos was dismissed for poor performance. The party also alleged that the former AHS head stalled the government’s plan to address wait times.

Mentzelopoulos’ lawsuit prompted investigations by the RCMP and the Alberta auditor general.

At this point, it is safe to say that the provincial government has its hands full dealing with these, and many other issues.

The provincial government’s ability to resolve these issues in a manner that would be acceptable not only to concerned stakeholders but to the public as well could be a defining moment for the UCP. To be sure, there is growing disenchantment with the directions Smith and the UCP are taking for the province.

Her Maple MAGA tendencies notwithstanding, Smith must prioritize these issues and seek an acceptable solution. A rigid, unyielding position may not cut it, and a lack of transparency could spell doom for the UCP.

Dragging those failures into the light turns stumbles into springboards, where each wrong step carves out clarity for the next leap forward.

This time, STFU isn’t just about my own setbacks. It’s about what someone else did—and how their actions left a mark on me.

Over the years, working alongside local politicians on various projects and advisory roles, I’ve seen the faces behind public personas. One collaboration in particular stands out as a mostly positive experience; I was grateful for the opportunity. After the project wrapped, I sent a thank you message—the kind of note that closes a chapter. I promptly forgot about it until, out of the blue last week, that politician reached out: they wanted my support in the coming election.

But staring at my screen, I noticed my original message had been left hanging, “unreplied”, for two years. That flicker of neglect was enough to cast doubt on supporting their campaign.

Watching my father, a master of relationships, taught me that genuine connections aren’t built in crisis—they’re cultivated over years. He had a global rolodex of contacts, not because of his title, but because he stayed in touch whether or not someone could do anything for him. He was endlessly interested in people—their lives, their stories, their struggles.

In business and in life, the difference between fleeting contacts and genuine relationships is sincerity.

Authentic bonds are forged by showing real interest, listening intently, and investing time— especially when nothing is to be gained. Yet today, with thousands of Facebook friends and LinkedIn connections, meaningful engagement is harder than ever. The challenge isn’t collecting contacts; it’s maintaining heartfelt connections in an age where interaction can become surface-level and transactional.

Face-to-face conversations, thoughtful check-ins, and honest exchanges remain more valuable than digital likes or birthday reminders. Building trust and loyalty requires effort and intentionality—qualities that I believe are now at risk of getting lost in the shuffle of algorithmdriven feeds.

A Place Called Home

E

nglish is my second language.

We all see a wall, one that separates Canadians and those ‘newcomers’. It is an invisible racial barrier that forcibly integrates them as it is the only way that they can be truly accepted.

Ruth Ginsburg remarkably expressed: “Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time”, signifying how immigrants adjust gradually to change in culture. It’s unfortunate that people feel the need to change to gain acceptance regardless of what they can lose in the process. As of 2021, 23% of the population accounts for immigrants which means these are the individuals who left their country to find a ‘home’ but are now compelled to standards of who they believe Canadians are. This is our society now, people who are defined by how well they can speak English, their accents, and how they can integrate without the shadow of the country that they left. “Successfully attempting to be ‘Canadian’ would be a relief”, the fear of speaking up because they speak better

than you would disappear and you’ll be accepted nonetheless. But what did it take? The loss of a culture? The loss of a history? The loss of yourself?

The truth is, in everything in between– we slowly forget who we are, what truly matters, and what is important to us.

Leaving a country, leaving a home that you grew up in and experiencing a new life in a society that is new to you would incline you to adapt to find that comfort you experienced back home once more.

Immigrants tend to lean more towards social validation because they feel different.

And finding the means to integrate, though it costs who they are, is worth it because maybe they’d feel at home again. They believe that they have the obligation to accept these social norms as they chose to stay here making them ‘just visitors’.

This is greatly seen in an organization that I volunteer in which teaches English to newcomers in Canada. Here, there are those who struggle to adapt to the culture but try, just so they can call this country

home. It takes great courage to leave the place you once found comfort in, but it is also an incredible sacrifice to change everything you knew just to be accepted.

It is also our role to accept those newcomers who left everything behind for Canada, to learn more about them and the culture that they stand for, and to not make them feel the pressure of acceptance because we already do welcome them.

Being a young immigrant myself,

I do aim to be part of the Canadian culture just so I can be called ‘normal’ and indifferent from those around me but it does not mean that I am any more different than those who are. I have my own culture but I still call Canada my home. It is not in the way we speak and look that defines who we truly are, but those accents that remain the remnants of the culture we once had.

So seemingly: when will we see, that to be free, we must embrace diversity?

COLOUR ME COMEDY FESTIVAL MAKES ITS DEBUT IN EDMONTON

T

he Colour Me Comedy festival is the inaugural stand-up comedy festival in Edmonton celebrating local comics of colour and other underrepresented voices. It is organized by Tesh Aytenfisu and Sterling

Scott, one of our top national headliners who lives in Edmonton.

Colour Me Bastos is the festival’s Filipino showcase show, and will be held on Saturday, October 25 at 7 PM at the Orange

Hub Theatre. The show features: • Celeste Lampa - A stand-up comedian based in Edmonton, Alberta. By day, she’s a hard-working suburban mom and by night, she’s still a hard-working suburban mom. Crafting Care: Queer BIPOC Community Gathers for Incense, Tea, and Togetherness By: Masc Sunday Team

This October 19, Masc Sunday returns with “Sacred Aromas and Brews”, a soul-nourishing gathering at Balay Coffee that invites queer BIPOC community members into a space of ritual, creativity, and collective healing.

Rooted in ancestral practices and cultural integrity, the event centers a round two intimate acts: crafting incense from scratch and blending personalized teas using floral and herbal bases. But beyond the sensory experience lies a deeper purpose reclaiming traditions often commodified or erased, and restoring them as tools for connection, resistance, and remembrance. In a world where queer BIPOC voices are frequently marginalized, Sacred Aromas and Brews offers more than just a workshop; it’s a sanctuary for storytelling, intergenerational dialogue, and community building. The Force Awakens at Winspear Centre: A performance of the music from Star Wars

T

he Force is strong with this one! The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) performed The Music of Star Wars, featuring a collection of familiar themes from the original trilogy such as The Imperial March and Princess Leia’s Theme down to works from later series and spinoffs such as The Imperial Suite from Rogue One. Under the conducting “lightsaber” of Lucas Waldin, the ESO, along with the choirs Korora and Oran, transported the audience to a journey in a galaxy far, far away using music, a powerful force that touches the hearts and souls of its listeners.

The program included the well-loved music of John Williams, spanning decades of evolution from the very first Star Wars saga that began in 1977, to The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Also featured were the legendary works of Michael Giacchino for Rogue One. Making the performance more meaningful, Waldin engaged the audience by sharing behindthe-scenes trivia such as which piece John Williams found most difficult to write, and in which piece the dark destiny of Anakin

Skywalker is foreshadowed. Waldin’s vast knowledge of the Star Wars franchise as well as the creative process of its music production elevated the performance from a mere enjoyable night of music to an insightful musical journey through the music of Star Wars.

In addition to the success of the performance, it was also inspiring to see fellow Filipinos on stage. Among the performers were Oran members Carl Paolo Hernandez (alto 1) and Justin Chiongson (bass), as well as Korora’s associate conductor, Kitbielle Pasagui (soprano 2), a former member of the Philippine Madrigal Singers.

Leaving the concert, one couldn’t help but feel nostalgic and inspired.

It shows how music, when performed with passion and prowess, can also tell a story that is as vivid as one sees in films.

Due to its popularity, The Music of Star Wars will continue with more shows on October 28 and 29, 2025 at 7:30 PM at the Winspear Centre.

Whether you’ve memorized all the themes of each Star Wars episode, or are just someone who enjoys listening to music from films, this concert offers a chance to rediscover the saga through powerful and captivating symphonic music.

NATHAN IP: Fighting for Stability in a Sea of Uncertainty

By Bing J. Jaleco EDMONTON South West MLA Nathan Ip wants to bring sanity back to the lives of Albertans, and he knows it’s an uphill battle.

The province has the highest per capita GDP in Canada, but Nathan says many critical public services across Alberta are now facing grave threats from the provincial government itself.

“Affordability and cost of living are major issues. But at the moment, top-of-mind for so many folks would be education.

This is something that’s impacting all of us, and we’re advocating and fighting for teachers as much as we can,” Nathan said.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) went on strike over stalled negotiations for better pay and improved classroom conditions that aim to reduce classroom sizes and provide additional support, especially for students with special needs. Teachers likewise assailed a student tool kit issued by the provincial government supposedly to help students cope while their teachers are on strike.

But critics, like University of Calgary education professor Maren Aukerman, called the voluminous tool kit “incoherent” and said that it barely aligns with the provincial curriculum.

Among the supposed “incoherent” items? The tool kit teaches Grade 3 students how to count American

money, not Canadian. And Grade 4 students are instructed in drawing triangles—an activity normally done in Grade 1.

“Government supports have been shrinking, class sizes have been growing, and what teachers are asking for is a fair deal. What that means is that it’s not actually just about wages, although that’s one component, that they’re asking to be paid fairly. More importantly, it’s for better working conditions and more support in the classroom,” Nathan noted.

The MLA from the New Democratic Party said classroom complexity has increased significantly over the years for a number of reasons, and the situation is no longer tenable.

“It’s top-of-mind for us at the moment as a caucus. At the end of the day, we’re talking about

the future of Alberta, and there’s no more important investment in my mind than to invest in our children. We’re talking about our future talent pool and workforce in Alberta, our future leaders,” he said.

But education is just one of several key issues that Nathan believes Danielle Smith’s UCP government is mismanaging.

Healthcare and affordability are also major concerns facing many Albertans, who continue to endure long wait times, a shortage of doctors, and highquality care access for those in rural and remote areas around the province. The UCP recently introduced a bill that reorganizes Alberta’s health system, and critics said this would allow for-profit organizations to run hospitals and place public health officials under the supervision of politicians.

“Many tens of thousands of Albertans do not have access to a family doctor. This is an issue that our caucus and our leader (NDP leader Naheed Nenshi) are focused on. We don’t hear the premier talking about how she’s going to solve the healthcare crisis or addressing the day-today concerns,” Nathan noted.

“These issues are obviously very divisive, and it impacts everyone. We hear Premier Danielle Smith talking about separatism. And just by talking

about separatism, she didn’t need to do very much. Just talking about entertaining it has already driven away investments because it creates an environment of uncertainty which is critical to creating a stable and attractive business environment. It doesn’t help people that there is this conversation when Albertans are struggling with grocery bills and cost of living,” Nathan said.

He cited Filipino newcomers who are working three to four jobs for their families just to try to stay ahead of rising costs.

“They’re the hardest working in the community and not always the loudest community when it comes to complaining about things. But they help build this province despite struggling with rising costs, accessing healthcare service, and accessing good schools for their kids,” Nathan said.

The key, he added, is to regula rly meet with constituents, pa rticula rly newcomers who are facing issues like finding work in their field or having their credentials recognized. “My riding is what I would call a microcosm of

the province. We see the challenges faced by foreign educated healthcare workers, parents worried about the challenges around class sizes, and about how property taxes are now too high. My work as an MLA is to navigate through all these things as much as I can,” Nathan said.

“It’s really important for them to know that they have somebody that hears them and listens to them. And I will commit to absolutely try my best to make sure that their voices are not forgotten,” the MLA for South West Edmonton added.

Camrose Crowns Queenanay 2025: Redefining Beauty and Motherhood

he Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose, Alberta, became a stage of grace and empowerment as L & K Events, in cooperation with the Camrose Filipino Association (CFA) and the City of Camrose, presented Queenanay 2025 — a pageant celebrating beauty, diversity, and the strength of Filipino mothers.

With the theme “Celebrating Our Diversity: Redefine Beauty for a Cause,” the event supported two meaningful beneficiaries — the ALS Society of Alberta and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation — blending glamour with compassion.

Crowned as Grand Winner was Annalyn Brown, followed by Mary Anne Veranga (1st Runner-Up), Anna Santiago (2nd Runner-Up), Norie Macatangay (3rd Runner-Up), and Rose Pittendreich (4th Runner-Up).

The evening also celebrated the courage and dedication of candidates Jeswin Mangguera, Fe Melo, Rheanne Joy Friessen, and Syrine San Antonio.

Kilusang Kabataan:

Rising Through Art, Healing, and Justice in Edmonton

I

n the heart of Edmonton, a youthled movement is weaving together threads of creativity, cultural pride, and collective healing. Kilusang Kabataan (KK), meaning “Youth Movement,” has emerged as a vibrant force for change, uplifting Filipino youth through art, food,

sport, and awareness. All are invited to join this milestone moment, as KK honours its roots and looks ahead to a future of empowered youth leadership.

KK’s official launch celebration will take place on October 25, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Strathcona Edmonton

Public Library (EPL) on Whyte Avenue.

The event will feature: live performances by local artists, a community potluck, vendor tabling, and community discussion and dialogue for youth by youth.

Leading up to the launch, KK has had a journey of growth through building connections and support for youth made by youth. Beginning its journey with the Youth Social Program on March 18, 2025, held at the Orange Hub. The event offered food, arts and crafts, and homework help, creating a safe and inclusive space for youth to connect, express themselves, and build community. Previously featured in the Alberta Filipino Journal, the program marked the beginning of KK’s commitment to participatory, culturally rooted youth engagement.

KK’s roots in community action go even deeper. The movement first stepped into public solidarity during “A Day Without Migrants”, organized by the International Migrants Alliance (IMA) on December 19, 2024. They joined migrant workers, families, and allies in a powerful demonstration of visibility and resistance honouring the labour, sacrifice, and dignity of migrants who are often unseen, yet essential. That day marked KK’s first public act of collective care, and it continues to shape the movement’s values today.

The organization’s work is not only celebratory, it is also deeply responsive to the emotional needs of the community.

Following the tragic events at the LapuLapu Festival, KK joined the city-wide Luksang Bayan gathering, standing in

solidarity with those grieving all across Canada. In the spirit of healing, KK facilitated a Poetry Workshop through the Hilom event by PHIDEAS, held 100 days after the tragedy, offering youth a space to process grief through writing, ritual, and shared reflection. These acts of remembrance are part of KK’s broader commitment to intergenerational healing, ensuring that grief is not silenced but transformed into collective strength.

Recently at Pamana: From Heritage to Progress – Filipino Contributions Toward a Stronger Canada, hosted by the PhilArts Council, they received a formal recognition from the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, signed by MLA Nathan Ip, acknowledging their role in empowering youth and fostering cultural pride across the province.

As KK prepares for its launch, the message is clear: rebuilding our Filipino youth in Edmonton means reconnecting to our community, culture, and roots.

Whether through song, sport, storytelling, or shared meals, KK offers a space where young people can grow, heal, and lead.

They will host its beloved monthly karaoke night affectionately known as Scareoke on October 18 at Balay Coffee on Whyte Avenue. These karaoke nights have become a tradition of laughter, music, and community bonding. Proceeds from Scareoke will support the KK Launch, making every song a celebration of youth resilience.

giving a voice to those silenced during Martial Law

On October 4, 2025 guests were treated to a special screening of “11,103”, a documentary film about the survivors of the 14-year period of martial law in the Philippines. Organized by Migrante Alberta and with the support of Kilusang Kabataan, the screening took place at The Orange Hub in west Edmonton, and was graced by the presence of special guest, Ma. Christina “May” Rodriguez, the Executive Director of the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation. Tita May, as she introduced herself, came all the way from the Philippines to take part in the event.

11,103 won Best Documentary Film at the 46th Gawad Urian in 2023.

Its title is a nod to the 11,103 victims who were awarded compensation as a result of a landmark law passed by the Philippine government in 2013, which officially recognized the atrocities that occurred during Marcos’ dictatorship.

The compensation was funded by the illegally acquired wealth of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos which was hidden in their Swiss Bank accounts.

A discussion followed the screening, with Tita May answering questions about the film and sharing more information about the Bantayog ng mga Bayani (Monument of Heroes).

Bantayog ng mga Bayani is a monument, museum, and historical research centre featured in the documentary. Located in Quezon City, Philippines, it honours the martyrs and heroes of the struggle against the Marcos regime which lasted from 1972 to 1986.

Tita May entreats younger generations to keep asking questions about this brutal time in Philippine history, lamenting that one of the sad legacies of the Marcos dictatorship is the brainwashing and massive censorship that occurred during that period.

However, the fight for truth carries on. “Myself and many, many activists, old activists”, she said, pausing briefly, “old na (we’re already old), I’ve accepted old—they continue to speak out.”

According to their website, Bantayog has hosted about 100,000 visitors since it opened. Tita May issued an invitation,

asking that those interested contact them to schedule a visit so they can also arrange for a representative of theirs, or even a survivor to be present. “We think that we have maybe a window of ten years… before we lose that generation,” she said. “My generation still has that decade to try to pass on the learnings from our experiences to our young people.”

I thought it’s timely because of the food filled Canadian Thanksgiving—siempre naman may lumpia (of course, there were spring rolls).

In celebration of that favourite food-filled Canadian Thanksgiving, here is my poem:

We are more than spring rolls and Timmies!

We are a group of brown people with mixed bag Of uber gifts and mean sense of humor - loaded jokes and such: Can reach the ear-shattering “I will always love you” in karaoke!

Hey! We change the diapers of your lolas and lolos Put up with the insults and a constant barrage (sometimes with the “finger”, “Go back to where you came from!”)

We smile although deep inside

But in the end—we stay here!

There’s more personal space, lots of sunshine and I have a yard where I can fry my stinky fish and loads of spring rolls because this is what we love!

And sorry no—it wasn’t me who served you at the Timmies drive through! Just one of us smiling at you!

Redefining Mental Health

• “Mental health is not just about treating illness—it’s about nurturing resilience, balance, and meaningful connection in everyday life.”

• This means shifting from a deficit model (fixing problems) to a strength-based model (building protective factors like coping skills, social support, and selfawareness).

Rising Concerns in Communities

• Stress: Chronic stress activates the body’s fight-or-flight response, impairing attention, memory, and immune function.

It is one of the most common risk factors for both mental and physical illness.

• Chronic illness: As populations age, more people live with long-term conditions (diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular disease) that require psychological coping, adjustment, and resilience.

• Burnout: Increasingly recognized by the WHO as an “occupational phenomenon”.

It manifests as emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced efficacy— especially common among caregivers, educators, and health workers.

• Loneliness: Research shows loneliness has health effects equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Social isolation elevates risk of depression, cognitive decline, and early mortality.

These issues are not isolated—they interact. For example, stress worsens chronic illness, which can lead to social withdrawal and loneliness, further deepening mental health challenges.

Harmonious Work–Life Balance

Redefining Balance • Many people think balance means splitting hours evenly between work and home, but psychology tells us balance is not about equal time—it’s about harmony.

• Harmony means feeling present, engaged, and aligned in whatever role you are in at the moment.

• Example: You may spend more time at work during certain weeks, but if you feel connected, purposeful, and also make space for recovery and family connection, you can still experience balance.

Signs of Imbalance When harmony is disrupted, psychological strain shows up in different ways: • Irritability: snapping at loved ones or colleagues.

• Exhaustion: difficulty concentrating, frequent fatigue, burnout symptoms.

• Neglect of health: skipping meals, ignoring exercise, poor sleep hygiene.

• Disconnection: losing touch with passions, creativity, or meaningful relationships.

Causes of Imbalance • Constant digital connectivity: always being “on call” for work blurs the line between professional and personal space.

• Unrealistic demands: high workload,

“A state of well-being in which every individual realizes their potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and can contribute to their community.”

This definition reminds us that mental health is holistic. It’s about mind, body, and community. In today’s workshop, we’ll explore practical, psychologically

• Lack of boundaries: difficulty saying no, lack of protected time for self or family.

Psychologically, these factors feed into chronic stress cycles→ sustained cortisol release → risk of burnout and health decline.

Strategies for Restoring Balance

a. Boundaries • The brain needs psychological detachment from work to recover. Without it, the nervous system never downshifts into rest-and-digest.

• Practical boundary examples: o “No work zones” → dinner table, bedroom, or last 30 minutes before sleep. o Turning off notifications after a cut-off time. o Communicating limits clearly to colleagues and family. b. Energy Over Time (Not Just Time Management) • Humans have fluctuating energy rhythms—linked to circadian cycles and self-control fatigue.

• Instead of focusing only on hours worked, manage energy peaks and dips: o Schedule demanding tasks (teaching, problem-solving, planning) during your peak alertness window. o Use recovery breaks (movement, breathing, brief outdoor walks) to recharge.

• This shift emphasizes quality over quantity of effort. c. Values Check • Stress often worsens when actions conflict with inner values (cognitive dissonance).

• Ask regularly: “Am I spending my life energy on what truly matters to me?”

• Example: if family, health, and creativity are values, does your daily calendar reflect those priorities—even in small ways?

Work/life balance is not about equal hours. It is about being aligned with your values, protecting your energy, and giving yourself permission to disconnect, so you can truly be present in each role you play.

• At its core, mindfulness is awareness with acceptance.

It’s noticing what is happening—thoughts, feelings, sensations—without rushing to change or judge it.

• From a psychological lens, mindfulness helps shift us from reactive autopilot to intentional responding.

e are so grateful to the Artists’ Association of Beaumont for accepting us as members of the group. Jonathan Gutierrez, Janvic Victorio and myself are so excited that we will be sharing our arts for the first time in the City of Beaumont.

On October 24th and 25th, the Artists’ Association of Beaumont (AAB) is hosting The Art Affair Gallery and Sale, a much anticipated FREE event that exhibits the work of 28 AAB members. Throughout the two-day art exhibit and sale, there will be

lots of fun art activities, including an opening night gala, a kids studio, live music, guest artists working on site, door prizes, and a 50-50 raffle!

speaker, live music by Andrew Scott and Jasmyn Wright, live artist Linda Finstad will be painting on-site (the artwork she makes during the event will be auctioned off that same evening as part of a fundraiser), and there will local delicious eats, and mocktails to be enjoyed!

s a visual artist, there are two things that are always present during my creative process. I need music and a cup of coffee to fuel my mind and body to create something extraordinary. I am very fortunate to know a local business that can provide those two things. Enter Gil Saulon, the mind behind The Black Pirate Coffee and Records.

residing in Edmonton, Alberta, Gil Saulon calls himself a caffeine dealer and record slinger. He moved to Canada five years ago and opened The Black Pirate Coffee and Records in 2024.

Why did you name it "The Black Pirate Coffee & Records"?

Well, we "sailed our shared passions ashore" to create a space that's a treasure chest for fellow coffee and music junkies. The pirate

theme is all about the search for treasure. In our pirate’s chest, you’ll find the very best coffee beans and the rarest of vinyl gems!

It's a rough-around-the-edges, adventurous spirit of seeking out high-quality treasure that we wanted to capture.

As a visual artist myself, one thing that caught my attention right away is the logo and the artwork, what is the story behind it?

Our logo is inspired by the infamous Jolly Roger flag and symbolizes the following: 1. The pursuit of adventure: It evokes a spirit of seizing opportunities, exploring the unknown, and living a bold, unconstrained life.

2. Uniqueness: Since nearly every pirate captain had a unique version of the Jolly Roger, it represents the embrace of individuality and a desire to be distinct from the rest of the world.

What made you want to go into this business?

It’s about passion-driven entrepreneurship and creating a curated community space. ​The main driver is the genuine love for both coffee and music. We don't just see them as products; we see them as essential elements that enrich daily life. ​Also, we want to share our interests by building a unique third space.

All the obstacles we face really fall into three main buckets: ​Financial: Low profits, high startup costs—the money side of things. ​Logistics: Where everything goes, needing multiple skills, and keeping customers moving smoothly. ​Legal: Permits, insurance, and all the regulations. ​At the end of the day, those operational challenges are just part of the deal. They're the price you pay to be doing something you're completely passionate about. That feeling of being right where you belong? That's your reward.

Any fun stories since you started the business?

Ok, let us say "The Produce Exchange: Our Market Currency is Coffee and Vinyl”.

​How did we get that perfect flat of sun-ripened strawberries? Not with money, that's for sure. It all started with a simple question: "Hey, would you take coffee or records for those?"

That's the beauty of the farmers market!

We're constantly trading, swapping and wheeling-and-dealing. A freshbaked loaf of bread is suddenly ours because the baker's a record collector and we had a record he couldn't resist.

It’s this fun, old-school energy that makes our corner of the market feel so uniquely local.

Any future plans?

To have a brick-and-mortar space that allows us to fully realize the synergy. We are moving from selling two products to selling a lifestyle.

This locks in the community aspect we started at the market.

Birthdays are everyone’s most cherished moment as this is when we celebrate the covenant between life and its Giver. Nobody is born alone. There are two causes of life that we have to acknowledge, appreciate, and recognize. The first is the Ultimate Cause or Giver, our God and the second are the proximate causes, our parents. Now, He who doesn’t acknowledge, appreciate, and recognize his or her life is also rejecting its Causes. Lucky are these individuals who truly celebrate life with significant people around them.

Social Media Literacy through Critical Visual Examination GAZING BEYOND

acebook, Instagram, or TikTok are common platforms for interactions, exchanges, and transactions of information, goods, and services. Information is positively created to educate, entertain, sell, communicate, or test and gain reactions.

These also have negative intentions to provoke, offend, undermine, defame, mislead, instigate chaos/ confusion, advance propaganda, increase bait clicks, and all forms of misinformation. While almost all members of society nowadays have their own gadgets, it is unfortunate that we are victimized by “trolls” who cleverly work to manufacture and publish negative information to manipulate and scam the vulnerable sectors of society, such as the poor, the unschooled, the children, the elderly, the brainwashed, and even

the professionally educated social media users.

In this article, let us gaze beyond at some of the visual characteristics of posted social media materials to examine their integrity. This article hopes to protect the vulnerable sectors by differentiating what is true, half-true, or totally fake. With the ongoing confusion in social media regarding political issues in the Philippines today (also affecting Filipinos abroad), I offer five visual forms to observe in social media posts to guide us in deciphering what to believe or belie.

1. Misspelled transcription of audio materials (e.g., speeches, conversations, songs)- these are texts (like subtitles in films) to aid people with hearing impairment and to support less understood or inaudible pronunciations. Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, however, struggle to transcribe because of phonetic nuances. An example is the term “fest” which could be pronounced by some speakers as “pest”, “piste”, “feast”, or “fist”. The digital creator who posted such information may have deliberately created or indeliberately assisted

by AI that produces contextual inaccuracy. The content creator may be less experienced in the technical aspects of video/photo production, but it may also be deliberately created by a “troll” who morphed information to produce negative effects.

2. Inconsistent quality of composed layers of pictures/videos- this means that pictures/videos that are intended to be communicated

were taken from different sources that could have been captured at different times of capture (lighting/ season), different locations (indoor/ outdoor/background), different contexts, or different narrativization of a plot. The content creator may have manipulated how the pictures are laid out or how videos are presented or animated in a way that alters the real sequencing or context of the story. Pictures/ videos can be diagnosed by simply observing the inconsistencies of the lighting or focus and contrasts of images, such as sharpness or blurring. The tonal values of the skin of a person who is a subject in the picture/video differ when it is rendered through AI because it lacks texture. To put it, natural people shown in the picture/video must have the flaws of the skin, such as scars, pores, skin color/ texture, wrinkles, or lighting/ glow. Otherwise, when the model becomes too flawless, it may also alter the age impression, state of health, or shape of the illustration as gleaned against the person’s overall appearance.

3. The catchy “lede” (first sentence or headline) makes you rethink- it is in a way that deduces the whole story in a single word or a few words, which are often easy to read, short, and written in bold texts with catchy colors. The lede can effectively bait a click from a potential audience or reader of a social media posting. The word(s) are action verbs often extracted from a story that may simplistically extract the main points of the story, but at the discretion of the

content creator. The discretion to choose an action verb is triggered to increase click baits that generate increased traffic, search visibility, revenues, increased popularity of the content creator, or virality of the story. For its cons, it becomes frustrating to the audience, leading to loss of trust or creating a skillful, sustained subscription or following.

4. Emoji reactions and commentsare immediate indications of audiences’ responses, which also indicate polarized beliefs, biases, intellectual differences, or quantitative manifestations of emojis reflecting the post’s likability (thumbs up), lovability (heart), laughingstock/joke (cringing face), or creating anger (red face). The comments also provide different points of view for critical thinking and provide names of reactors/ leads for possible collaborations, associations, provision of links for further reading/viewing, or simply affirming one’s emotions or thoughts from like-minded individuals. Emojis and comments may also expose the positions of your social media friends. These also measure the virality of an issue that is worth sharing and influencing to enforce the cases of gaining support, such as election campaigns, rallying advocacies, waging warfare, brand/channel promotions, or inciting sedition, which is a crime.

5. Quotes supported by illustrations do not match the timing and setting when the words were expressed - quoted words are visualized with a picture that dramatizes, exaggerates, or emphasizes the

gravity of a story/concept. As an example, the actor shouted with all his might in the picture, but he was not actually shouting at the time the quote was expressed.

This positions the content creator as a storyteller or manipulator who expresses his own biases to clickbait, misleads the audience, and generates higher audience share.

One way of checking facts is to rely on traditional media like TV, which may provide lengthier and detailed coverage of the story, and to get actual interviews or footage recorded on photo/video or audio.

This can also drive short-term gains but communicated stories unethically.

It can be underscored that the influx of many social media postings regarding the Philippines attracts social expressions and exploitation.

Critical national issues affecting each Filipino, like the Former President’s Extra Judicial Killings (EJK); West Philippine Sea Extensions of China; Disallowances against VP Sara Duterte for her unexplained expenditures; and the Ghost and substandard Flood Control Projects of DPWH, resulting in war between the upper and lower house legislators for possible revelation of participation.

These issues have all been creating confusion and divisiveness within the socio-political structures, hollering on social media. We are now at war with each other because of the concoctions in social media.

It is therefore imperative that we practice critical visual examinations on what we see and read. Spread some of these tips to protect the vulnerable sectors of society. www.AlbertaFilipinoJournal.com

I was driving home one late Saturday afternoon when I observed the signs of what is coming. The front lawn of one of the houses in our neighbourhood was like that of a haunted one. Zombie, ghouls, coffin and related All Saints’ Day characters were all positioned conspicuously. Such displays invite youngsters to experience Halloween.

All Saints’ Day, according to Britannica, is a day in the Christian church commemorating all the saints of the church, both known and unknown, who have attained heaven. For generations this commemoration highlights the good deeds and heroic acts of people of faith.

One block away, interestingly, more houses’ front yards were cluttered with another kind of signage. Faces and names of the local election’s candidates competed for the attention of people passing by. Such sights bring hope (for change) and for some, sneers. Their faces and names looked better than the characters of Halloween.

As I closed our front window late that night, I once again saw both sides of the street. Alternately or randomly, both sides were plastered with both Halloween and election paraphernalia. Then it occurred to me how children will be excitedly roaming the street from one house to another whole trick or treating. Generous families give happiness to kids with their baskets full of candies. Mostly, they will be treated with joy. Seldom will they be tricked.

Trick or treat also holds true for politicians knocking from door to door. Most of them promise “treats”. Often, though, we the peasants end up “tricked”. The treats or promises spoken during the campaign season were just an empty word.

In our community, based on my personal observation, we’re not totally “treated” with respect by most of these “politicians”. They perfectly know how we treat each other and how we are less, or not serious enough to engage in any political exercise. They are aware that our cup of tea is more on the optics or outside look of who we are. This is best manifested by our collective focus on fashion, looks, talent, stage shows, self promotion, social media use, etc. Mostly, we are only good with our “intra community politics.” Look around. How many organizations, societies and clubs are sprouting? Everyone wants to be a leader. Smart candidates know how they approach this opportunity. They can easily play around with our attention seeking pseudo leaders. Selfie here, selfie there, selfie everywhere, and we’re in their basket.

knock at our front door. They will surely ask not for a “treat or trick” per se. They want our treat (vote). I guess we can trick them by asking how much they know about our community. Ask how many Filipino community leaders they know. Ask what have they done (or spent time on) for our community? Or better still, record their answer to this question: “If elected, how or in what way can they show their respect to our community?” You decide then who to elect.

Again, “trick or treating” this Oct. 31st is for kids. Oct 20th is for smart electorate who can discern if they are being treated with respect or being tricked.

‘Trillion Peso March’ (The holy war on corruption)

hurch and civil society leaders hold a press conference in Quezon City on Monday, September 15, to urge Filipinos to join the Trillion Peso March against corruption on Sunday, September 21, 2025. The Trillion Pesos March is essentially a holy war on corruption. This time, we are not merely trying to install a new government; rather, this represents a novel form of People Power that transcends the removal of leaders to dismantle deeply entrenched corruption and political dynasties – we are establishing a new paradigm. Unlike EDSA I and II, this movement prioritizes systemic reform, rebuilding accountability, and restoring the values of patriotism and public service; it signals a broader, nationwide demand for lasting structural change.

As Vice President of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines, representing Fr. Karel San Juan, SJ, the President, representing over 1,500 member schools all over the country, and as Head of the National Secretariat for the Church Leaders Council for National Transformation, under the leadership of Most Rev. Roberto Gaa of Novaliches, head of CLCNT, Most Rev. Jose Colin Bagaforo of Caritas

Philippines, I am here before you today to relay the stand of these two associations condemning the scourge that is tearing our nation apart: brazen corruption.

Corruption infiltrates every aspect of ordinary Filipinos’ lives, reducing our proud people to a state of mendicancy over decades of unchecked greed. No true democracy can flourish in a nation of beggars. Programs like 4Ps, TUPAD, AICS, and AKAP— while well-intentioned—are stark evidence of this dependency, handouts that mask the systemic theft robbing us of self-reliance and dignity.

Look at our education crisis, a direct casualty of corruption.

Malnourished children endure stunted growth, suffering irreversible brain damage before they even enter kindergarten.

Students are crammed into dilapidated, damaged classrooms, deprived of basic reading materials, leaving us ranked among the poorest in reading comprehension worldwide. This tragedy stems from the abuse of confidential funds and illegal budget insertions by those in power. No democracy survives with a miseducated populace, ignorant and vulnerable.

That is why every member school of CEAP is seething with righteous anger. Tama na! Sobra na! Enough is enough!

Consider the senseless deaths plaguing our land—all rooted in corruption. How many perish in

road accidents due to crumbling roads and absent warning signals?

How many drown in floods year after year because flood controls are neglected, funds siphoned away? How many families mourn breadwinners lost to extrajudicial killings under the guise of a “war on drugs”? And how many starve daily from hunger? These are not accidents; they are the deadly fruits of corruption.

Meanwhile, a handful of political dynasties and their cronies hoard millions and billions in rented condos, tossing mere coins to the masses of mendicants. They jet their children to elite international universities while countless Filipino kids are denied quality education. Their extravagant birthday parties cost millions, even as families die from malnutrition and despair. This grotesque divide exposes the heart of evil: the corrupt elite feasting on the nation’s wealth, leaving the poor to scrape by in the shadows of poverty and injustice.

Corruption is not only a political crime; it is a moral evil coursing through the blood of our society, a spiritual battle infecting every level—from Malacañang Palace to the humblest barangay halls, from bustling cities to remote coastal villages.

This is why Caritas Philippines, with the full blessing of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, has forged the Church Leaders Council for National Transformation. It is the umbrella organization of different church denominations, institutions, episcopal commissions, who are guided by the gospels. We

call all citizens, most importantly our young people back to Jesus, to draw courage from Him, to fight for justice and peace, to dismantle corruption, and to rally behind honest leaders who champion the common good.

In conclusion, we call upon every citizen—rich and poor, young and old—to rise up for national reform and transformation. Let us purge this evil from our land, rebuild with integrity, and forge a Philippines where justice prevails, dignity is restored, and no one is left behind. Together, in faith and action, we can transform our nation. The time is now!

Canada Reduces Reliance On The Temporary Foreign Worker Program And Enforces Stricter Penalties For Non-Compliant Employers

W

hen it comes to employment in Canada, Canadians are always first in line. The Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program serves only as a last resort for employers who cannot find qualified Canadians or permanent residents to fill job vacancies.

Before being approved to hire a temporary foreign worker, employers must prove that they made genuine recruitment efforts within Canada and were unsuccessful. They must also continue seeking Canadian candidates while their Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application is under review.

Workers hired through the TFW Program make up just about 1% of Canada’s total workforce, yet they play crucial roles in agriculture, food processing, construction, and health care—sectors that keep Canada’s economy strong.

In fiscal year 2024–2025, 1,435 compliance inspections were conducted. About 10% of employers were found noncompliant, leading to penalties that more than doubled—from $2 million to nearly $4.9 million— and 36 employers were banned from the program.

CHOOSING THE BETTER PART Luke 10:38–42

In today’s gospel Jesus contrasts Mary and Martha—two sisters who respond differently to His presence. Martha is absorbed in serving and attending to practical needs, while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, fully attentive to His teaching. Theologically, this passage reminds us that service alone, no matter how well-intentioned, is insufficient if it is not grounded in a heart oriented toward God. True discipleship begins with listening, contemplation, and interior openness to Christ, for all authentic action flows from a life rooted in prayer and communion with Him. Jesus’ words, “Mary has chosen the better part,” underscore the primacy of interior life. Contemplation is not a rejection of service, but its foundation. Theology calls this principle contemplative action: our ministry is most fruitful when it arises from an attentive and prayerful heart. Mary’s choice models the posture of discipleship—surrendering distractions, prioritizing God’s presence, and allowing His word to shape our being. It challenges us to examine whether our busyness in ministry or daily life is enhancing our spiritual growth or pulling us away from the source of all grace.

Finally, Choosing the Better Part challenges every believer to cultivate balance in life. Like Martha, we can easily become consumed by duties, responsibilities, and good intentions, forgetting that God’s presence is the ultimate source of life and fruitfulness. Mary’s example reminds us that being with Christ—listening, reflecting, and dwelling in His word— prepares us to act with love, wisdom, and effectiveness. In

The Life of an Accountant

B

eing an accountant is one of the most sought after professions by Filipinos, especially when it comes to obtaining the CPA designation.

But why is it appealing and what exactly does an accountant do?

Jonathan Jaucian, coowner of Pantas Bookkeepers in Edmonton, is an accountant with over a decade of experience.

Originally an Economics degree holder in the Philippines, he has somehow found himself with an accounting job and is now working towards obtaining his CPA designation in Canada.

Let’s find out what it is like to be an accountant.

First, what is accounting?

JJ: Accounting is the systematic

process of recording, summarizing, analyzing, and reporting financial transactions and information for an individual or organization to provide insights into financial health and guide decision-making.

Why is accounting important?

JJ: There are a lot of reasons but what I would like to highlight is that it reinforces accountability. I spent a majority of my accounting career in the non-profit sector.

By monitoring and analyzing the movement of resources, accountants ensure that company spending is diligently executed.

What is it like to be an accountant?

JJ: Well, it’s an office job. But what makes it appealing to me are the endless opportunities.

Every business out there needs an accountant. That means I can be an accountant at a government agency and see how politicians handle taxpayers’ money; or be an accountant at a charity and channel donations to the community or be an accountant at a billion-dollar TV production company and get to see the glamour of celebrity life.

Would you encourage other Filipinos to pursue accountancy?

JJ: ABSOLUTELY! but only for the right reasons. I was first an economist, and ironically, I became one because I was actively avoiding accounting back in university. I think the universe wanted me to become an accountant because I have

been one for over ten years now. I made it this long because I enjoy the job and accounting makes sense to me. I know the importance of it for a business to thrive. I like that the job requires honesty and precision. There
