At tiyak niya iyon.

Bilang isang sanggol, may kakayahan

Alagaan ang Sarili upang Magmahal: Pasalamat ka, kapag minahal ka. Gusto mo bang mahalin ka? Kung ganun, magmahal ka. Kung sakaling hindi nila suklian ang pagmamahal mong iyon. Wag kang mag-alala. Dahil pribilihiyo lamang naman talaga ninuman ang mahalin siya ng kapwa. Ang tunay na TUNGKULIN natin ay ang MAGMAHAL! Muli, kung hindi mangyari ang ating hangarin na mahalin din tayo; kung hindi ibalik sa atin ang pagmamahal na ginugol natin;

CHRISTMAS IN OUR HEARTS: Should not be Christmas that Hurts!

The parable of the hostage From the rising of the sun to its setting, a poor boy has long been consistently and devoutly praying to the Sto. Niño about his desire to have a bicycle as his gift last Christmas. At midnight December 24th 2018, he

woke up and realized with despair that there was no bicycle by the threshold of their house. He immediately went back to the altar of their home; took Virgin Mary’s statuette, wrapped it in a newspaper, continued on page 12 ►

Today’s Topic: “The Essence & The Real Meaning of Christmas: "Jesus is The Reason for The Season" “EXPERIENCING THE FIRST CHRISTMAS: PARKING PROBLEM” My wife and I went to church earlier for Christmas Eve Mass Thirty Minutes before the Scheduled Mass time. I thought we were still early but Lo and Behold, there was already traffic as we approached the church. I dropped my wife off first then went looking fo parking in the church courtyard. Finding parking was a bit of a challenge. I had to drive around three times before I was finally able to find a parking spot (which even then I had to use some "creativity"). "ONE GRUMPY PARISHIONER" After parking our car, I proceeded inside the church and looked for my wife. The church was already jam-packed with parishioners. This time, finding seats for my wife and I became the next challenge. I looked around the church in search of my wife. Finally, I saw where she was seated: second row, centre aisle. I then proceeded to sit beside her. Space was kind of "tight" because the church was full and everyone was trying to "squeeze in" in whatever space they can. The lady to my left was complicating the situation with her grumpy behaviour, in addition to putting her jacket in the space available to her left, depriving others of a seat as well. But WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE OF the "PARKING" SITUATION as well as the "GRUMPY" parishioner to Christmas and to the the REAL MEANING of Christmas? Well, without me being cognizant about it then, I realized as our Parish Priest was delivering the Homily that I just actually "experienced" the FIRST Christmas itself. The situation where I was driving around and around earlier looking for parking space

whole. We can know that Heaven is a place where we can go to when this life is over. Look at Christmas in a new way this year. This is the year to invite Jesus into your heart. CHRISTMAS is not about opening our presents. IT IS ABOUT OPENING OUR HEARTS TO CHRIST's LOVE. During the FIRST CHRISTMAS, there was NO room for the Holy Family at the Inn. This time around, let's OPEN the rooms in our hearts to CHRIST's love. You will then have a “Merry Christmas”. The joy and peace you will receive will last all year as you look to God for all your needs to be met.

settling for a manger because there was NO ROOM nor space for them in the inn. The Priest also stated: "It's that time of year again. December has come and with it all the joys of Christmas. But what is the real meaning of Christmas? Is it the gifts under the tree, the lights in the windows, the cards in the mail, turkey dinners with family and friends, snow in the yard, stockings hanging in the living room, and shouts of "Merry Christmas" to those who pass us in the streets? Is this really Christmas?" "For many people, Christmas is a time of sorrow. They don't have the EXTRA MONEY to buy presents for their children, family, and friends. Many are saddened at Christmastime when they think of their loved ones who will not be able to come home for various reasons. Turkey dinners may be only a wish and not a reality for some. Yet, Christmas can be a season of great joy. It is a time of God showing His great love for us. It can be a time of healing and renewed strength. You see, Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth

brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all SHARED in the excitement of knowing about this great event. They knew this was no ordinary baby. The prophets had told of His coming hundreds of years before. The star stopped over Bethlehem just to mark the way for those who were looking for this special child. Why did He come? Why did God send His son to this sometimes cruel and hard world? He sent Jesus to us so that one day, He would grow up to become a very important part of history. His story (history) is one of truth, love, and hope. It brought salvation to all of us. Without Jesus, we would all die for our sins. Jesus was born so one day the price could be paid for our wrongdoing. The Bible says that all have sinned. We are all born with a sinful nature. We do things that do not please God. Through the sins of Adam and Eve, we have all inherited that sinful nature. We need to have that removed. The only way is through Jesus. Jesus came so He could die on the cross for ALL of our sins. If we believe that Jesus died for our sins, we can ask Him to come into our hearts and forgive us. Then, we are clean and made

******************************* “I WISH WE CARRY WITH US THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT ALL YEAR ROUND!" I went to church tonight for the Christmas Eve Mass and arrived an hour early (because I am proclaiming the Second Reading: St. Paul's Letter to Titus). However, the church was nearly full already by that time. I noticed that everybody was nice, cheerful, polite and helpful to each other. “Wow!” I said to myself. Wouldn't it be nice if people celebrate the Spirit of Christmas every day instead of only on December 24 & 25? Every day is and should always be Christmas Day! During Christmas, people spread joy and happiness; greet each other with a Big Smile; are kind and tolerant; patient; generous; peaceloving; Selfless and considerate; compassionate; and most of all, loving to one another! This is what I observe the most during Christmas. Now, what if we start adopting the mindset that every day is Christmas Day? Yes, why don’t we think that way? We can do it, folks! Let’s just do it! The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. A world of peace and happiness begins with a single person and a random act of kindness! Let’s start TODAY! And do it EVERY DAY! Then, every day will be like CHRISTmas! Helping others doesn’t just give your life meaning — it gives your suffering meaning.” Here’s a very good idea of what we can do from now on: Let’s buy Christmas presents from small local businesses and self-employed individuals. Let’s make sure our dollars go to our local businesspeople and NOT multinational companies. This way, more LOCALS will have a better Christmas. God bless all! JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON - Without CHRIST, there is NO CHRISTMAS! My wife Baida and I wish all of you my dear family, relatives, U.P. Vanguard Brods & Sis, classmates and dear friends and your respective families the Message of CHRISTMAS: LOVE, GENEROSITY, PEACE & HOPE. A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPIER & MORE PROSPEROUS 2020 TO YOU ALL! THE BEST OF THE BEST IS YET TO COME! GOD BLESS US ALL!!!

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly PBSA calls for unity Another year is almost over. But before this year ends, let us look at some of the events that happened. The Good Alberta had a peaceful election and elected a new Premier in Jason Kenney. Albertans were looking forward to Kenney being able to deliver on his promises of more jobs, eliminating the carbon tax, maintaining Healthcare and Education spending as well as fighting to get the Trans Mountain pipeline built. Alberta’s economy has been suffering since 2008. After Kenney was sworn into office, his Government got rid of the carbon tax as promised. The Bad 2019 is a year that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will definitely like to forget because of his Government’s involvement in the SNC Lavalin Affair. Attorney General Jody Wilson Raybould resigned from The Liberal cabinet and was followed by Health Minister Jane Philpott. The integrity of Prime Minister Trudeau’s government was in question. This was a bad year for the Trudeau Government because they were unable to get construction started on the Trans Mountain Pipeline Project which the Government bought for $4.5 billion. The Ugly Canadians had a chance to be heard again during the Federal Election held on October 21, 2019. Despite the SNC Lavalin Affair, to the dismay of a lot of people in Western Canada, Mr. Trudeau was once again elected Prime Minister. However, he now leads a Minority Government. Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer failed in his bid to be elected as Prime Minister and has resigned his post as Conservative Leader. Alberta Premier Jason Kenney released the new Alberta Budget with cuts that affect healthcare, particularly frontline workers

like nurses, health care aides and many more. While the Kenney Government did fulfill and maintain their budget for healthcare, they slashed the wage of nurses and other healthcare professional from 2% to 5%. They also did cut a lot of benefits. The Kenney Government also eliminated incentives for New Start Up Technology Companies as well as Alternative Energy Companies. So with the Trans Mountain in question, what other alternatives does Kenney’s Government have under its sleeves in order to create more jobs and spur the Alberta economy? This remains to be seen. All indicators were looking ugly, until an announcement that the Trans Mountain Pipeline has started. Hopefully, this will be enough to calm down angry nurses, healthcare aides, teachers and Albertans who believe they were taken for a joyride by Kenney’s promises. Because of this ugly move, The United Nurses Association, the HSAA, the Alberta Federation of Labor and media entities have

questioned Premier Kenney’s move. Many have questioned his actions and speculate that Kenney wants to farm out and privatize our public healthcare system, which a lot of Albertans oppose. We will continue to monitor what Kenney is trying to do and how his Government can fulfill its promises. While Nurses are getting a wage reduction, the Premier spent about $16,000 of taxpayers’ money when he chartered a plane to Saskatoon, and his adviser spent about $45,000 on his travel to London. This is a lot of money for a province already in deficit. What bothers me most is that Kenney also sent another guy to Asia so they can promote our Oil Industry. How can he send someone to Asia when we do not even have the capability to export oil out because the pipeline has not been built? This is a waste of taxpayers’ dollars. ***** It is the time of year when we want to be thankful for all the Blessings that our good Lord has showered upon us. This year proved to be tough and came with a lot of challenges. However, there are a lot of great things we want to be thankful for, including true friends who are on our side through thick and thin. I would like to thank my wife and kids, my AFJ Family and all the Officers and members of the Philippine Media Assocation of Alberta. Special mention also to Lydia Jimenez and Eddie Gonzales for supporting the NOTIFY app. Ms. Jimenez also went to the Holy Land to pray for my family. I want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Let us all remember this season of joy and giving as we celebrate the birth of our saviour, Jesus Christ.

PH surfer Casugay gets PH’s record 149 golds lift ‘spirit of the nation’: PSC chief 'fair play athlete' award

DUTERTE WITH PH SURFING TEAM. President Rodrigo Duterte meets with the Philippine Surfing Team, including Roger Casugay who saved his Indonesian rival during the competition, at the Malacañan Palace on Dec. 10. MANILA – As the 2019 Southeast Asian Games finally came to a close on Wednesday, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William Ramirez lauded the Filipino athletes for their hard work and determination to regain the Games supremacy. Ramirez made the remark after the Philippines pulled out its best performance in the 30th

SEA Games, garnering a record 149 golds, 117 silvers and 121 bronzes in 530 events of the 56 sports played throughout the 10-day competitions of the 11-nation biennial multisports meet. “Our athletes gave their all and they deserve all the respect and care that we can give them, as kababayans (countrymen) and as a nation. You all made us proud.

Salamat sa inyong sakripisyo, tiyaga at pagpupursigi (Thank you for your sacrifices, patience and determination),” the PSC chief said. “All your hard work and achievement produced more than just medals. It lifted the spirit of a nation hungry for inspiration and hope. It awakened the spirit of patriotism in each of us,” he added.(PNA)

MANILA — National team surfer Roger Casugay's heroic act has been rewarded on Wednesday night as he was named the "Fair Play Athlete" of this year's Southeast Asian Games. At the closing ceremonies at the New Clark City Athletic Stadium in Capas, Tarlac the Filipino surfer was given the recognition as a tribute to his heroic sportsmanlike deed during the biennial meet's surfing event in San Juan, La Union. With the town still reeling from the effects of Typhoon "Tisoy" (Kammuri) on Friday last week, Casugay gave up a chance to pull away from Indonesia's Arip Nurhidayat

after his surfboard got damaged and eventually sank, went back, and saved him from drowning. The act of sportsmanship even got the nod from Indonesian president Joko Widodo, saying, "Winning the competition and upholding sportsmanship is important, but humanity is above all. My appreciation for Roger Casugay, a Filipino surfer who gave up the golden opportunity to help an Indonesian athlete who fell in the race." Casugay eventually won the event he was in, the men's longboard event, and gave the Philippines one of its 149 total gold medals. (PNA)

MANILA -- Malacañang thanked Gazini Ganados for representing the country well in the 68th Miss Universe competition in Atlanta on Monday despite failing to make it to the Top 10. Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said even if she failed to earn a back-to-back win for the Philippines, Ganados was able to make the nation proud by competing against 90 candidates around the world. “Ms. Ganados has given pride and glory to the Filipino nation by showcasing the unique beauty and talent of the Filipina,” Panelo said in a statement. In her 15-second speech given to the Top 20 semifinalists, Ganados pushed for her advocacy on elderly care. “The world is aging and my grandparents raised me and I've worked in an organization that was supporting elderly care. I learned then, I realized that there's this stigma between ageism, poverty, exclusivity, and invisibility,” Ganados said. “It is rightful for us that they are the ones who paved the way for us and we should reciprocate that love and no one should be left behind,” she added. Ganados was also named as the winner of the Best National Costume special award. Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi was named the winner followed by Miss Puerto Rico Madison Anderson and Miss Mexico Sofía Aragón. How to Not Treat Children with Tragic Family Circumstances During Christmas Season GENERAL POINT OF VIEW

Giselle General gqgeneral@gmail.com Giselle General came from the cold, mountainous region on the Benguet province, and immigrated to Canada as a teenager in 2007. After completing her Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta, she now dedicates her business training to the nonprofit sector, both in employed and volunteer capacities. She works at the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, which provides free legal help to low-income Edmontonians. She channels her creativity by writing in her personal blog, General Point of View, and has recently published a book of her poems and artwork titled The Humanity of Me.

Please don’t make the introduction focus on that aspect alone. Speaking for myself, it feels like that is the only part of me that is worth highlighting just the sad part. It reinforces the feeling of loss and disconnection, and trust me, there are enough reminders of that every day. This applies to other difficult circumstances as well. If the child just recovered from a serious illness like cancer, had parents who just recently divorced, or was just kicked out of school. Many people enjoy hearing about particularly interesting details about others, it’s part of our ‘gossipy’ nature of our culture. This possibly why the most dramatic aspect of a person’s life is what is

mentioned right away. It is a way to be remembered. But, before divulging the information, take a moment to consider a few things. What is the emotional impact on the person being introduced? Children are particularly sensitive to this and won’t be able to express their or frustration as well as adults do. If they learn that their mistakes or shameful aspects will constantly be broadcasted for everyone to hear, this inhibits their ability to heal. Does this enrich or add any positive things in the conversation, to the gathering or introduction? Within the context of a potluck or a fundraising gala for example, does sharing the child’s past tragedies really matter? Is there a way to speak about

the child’s present-day activities or attributes instead? That can help instill a sense of accomplishment instead, that despite the tragedy that impacts their present-day life, there is so much more they are capable of experiencing and achieving. If the holiday season is about

togetherness and being merry, perhaps it’s a time to focus on the present. I encourage everyone to be respectful and conscious of this. The last thing that survivors of tragedy want is the “gift” of being reminded what they have lost outside of their control.

T

he holiday season is coming up, and this is another opportunity for social gatherings to occur in great abundance. From buffet dinners for your group, karaoke parties, exchange gift activities, the Noche Buena or Media Noche, there will be lots of people that we are likely to run into, both people we are familiar with, and those who are pretty new in our lives. Lots of introductions are usually made, with multitudes of names and relationships that need to be remembered. Every had to keep track of who is related to who, whether it is actually the first time you met the person, and making sure that names don’t get mixed up or mispronounced. I have one piece of advice that I’d like to share, given that I had an unfortunate incident that changed my circumstance as a child. Don’t use the tragedy as the primary introduction of the child. “This is Giselle, my niece who is an orphan. You know, the one who survived the accident,” is how I constantly get introduced. That is a stab in the heart just within the first few seconds of being introduced to a new person. It is understandable that the immediate reaction of the other person is sympathy and pity. The opportunity to be treated just like the other kids has gone. The child’s festive mood and inclination to meet new people are gone, just like that. This advice applies to the aunts, uncles, grandparents, family friends or distant acquaintances who know children who are orphans, or one of the parents passed away, or one of the parents did something shameful.

"ANG LIGA NG BAWAT PILIPINO" (transl. The League of Every Filipino)

The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) is a Regional Men's Semi-Professional Basketball League in The Philippines

M

anny Pacquiao launched the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League on August 29, 2017 According to Pacquiao, the league is not intended to be a competitor to the Philippine Basketball Association, the country's top professional basketball league. The MPBL will feature both a regional commercial and barangay-level league with teams on commercial side to have a home locality in additional to a corporate sponsor. It is planned that an expanded MPBL will have two conferences, North and South, where the best teams from both divisions will face the finals similar to the format of the National Basketball Association of United2019MPBL_AlbertaFilipinoJournal3.pdf States.

The MPBL originated with 10 character teams on its inaugural season. After its first successful season, it attracted a lot of team across the Philippines to join. There are 23 teams from Luzon, 3 teams from Visayas and 5 teams from 2019-12-18 9:18:29 AM Mindanao.

SPORTS JOURNAL Philippines, that was very popular during the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) years. The MBA is no longer operating because it can no longer be sustained financially. The last MBA commissioner that we were in contact with was Ramon Fernandez, who is now a commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission, when we had a meeting at the Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City with then basketball patrons Col.Emil Escandor of Royal Mandaya Hotel and basketball regional chief Regino “Boy” Cua of Timburana Wood. ABS-CBN network was subsidizing MBA teams at that time but the expenses were just too much that they were forced to give it up. Believe me, it is not easy to run regional basketball leagues in the Philippines because it is not land-locked. The Philippines has more than 7,000 islands. You have to ride the bus and take the boat, which saved team managers and owners a lot on transportation cost, instead of flying. That is why when I learned about Sen.Pacquiao’s MPBL, I was really happy and excited. Two years later, the MPBL is getting stronger. From 10 charter teams to 31 squads! Alberta Filipino Journal publisher Kuya Jun Angeles is putting up a one-page advertisement as one of the sponsors of the much-awaited game. It’s going to be a very Merry Christmas to basketball fans!

*** The Edmonton Filipino-Canadian Basketball League (EFCBL) has provided a venue for Filipino basketball fans residing in the North side of Edmonton. EFCBL president Ronnie Dioso and committee member Roel Divina, though Journal editor Lito Velasco, met with us at the A4 Oriental Store and Bakeshop in Mill Woods and we learned about the new organization. Just like the MPBL, they started in 2017. They have just four teams that year and now they have 15. That’s wonderful! After monitoring their games, what caught my attention was the gift-giving project they did for kids in the Philippines. EFCBL, a young sports organization,

has brought smiles to children at the Brgy.Malued Daycare in Dagupan. They donated two electric fans and gave gifts for the kids. Barangay captain Pheng Delos Santos and the children are very grateful to EFCBL officers and players. Mabuhay kayo EFCBL! *** I would like to greet all members of the Filipino sports community, a blessed Merry Christmas to all. We look forward to your basketball and volleyball leagues in 2020! Maligayang Pasko! *** If you have sports news, please email mocolumnist@albertafilipinojournal.com. Salamat po!

Home is where the heart is

I Bing J. Jaleco bingjaleco@yahoo.com Raleigh “Bing” Jaleco was a veteran journalist and public relations consultant in the Philippines. He started out as a correspondent for Ang Pahayagang Malaya and then moved on to be a reporter, and then an editor, of The Manila Chronicle. He also served as news editor of The Manila Standard, business editor of The Manila Times, and sub-editor at the Manila Bulletin. He landed as a permanent resident in Canada in 2016.

t’s that time of the year once again. While most of us will celebrate long-held traditions, some will continue to seek new ones. It is not always easy to seek and celebrate new traditions. Because we are Filipinos, we cherish long-held practices and often go out of our way just to make sure our holiday season is celebrated as closely as possible to how it was back home. There are some who dread the holiday season, perhaps because they feel uncomfortable with new traditions. The holidays bring with it memories of “home,” of friends and family, and of cherished practices. Filipinos love the Christmas season so much because it is supposed to usher in the festive mood, much sought-after at the end of a backbreaking year of hard work and

sacrifice. They love the season for what it reminds them of: home. And every year, at this time, a reminder of home becomes a bittersweet episode in the life of a “relocated” Filipino. We long for those days and nights of merriment, with family, friends, co-workers, even mere acquaintances. We long for the Christmas rush, for the parties, and the Kris Kringle at the workplace. Somehow, without the long-held traditions, the holidays are just not the same for us. Understandable as it is to feel homesick, we should teach ourselves one thing: we may have left our homes, but homedoesn’t really leave us. As the saying goes, “home is where the heart is.” There is something grander and greater than holiday traditions and practices, and if we

just pause momentarily from our busy lives and think about it, we will be reminded of the single most important tradition that transcends all other holiday traditions—the tradition of giving. We don’t need to give gifts. I believe that in the Christian context (which is really the basis for the Christmas celebration), it is all

about generosity. Being generous with your love, your time, your patience, and your wisdom is really what this season should be about. After all, this season is based on a story about a baby who was born in a manger to save us from sin. That was the gift given, and that is what our holiday tradition should be all about. from page 4

CHRISTMAS IN OUR HEARTS... brought it to the stock room and locked it inside. He hastily went back to the altar and tried to confront the Santo Niño: “Sto. Niño, I have been asking you for that bicycle and yet, you still haven’t given me that as my gift. If you continuously ignore my petition and keep depriving me of what I like, you will no longer see your mother!” The Parable of the Loving Father A poor boy was playing with a beyblade or a top. All of a sudden, he overthrew it and it went underneath a pile of firewood. He tried what he could do to retrieve his toy. Unfortunately, he ended up crying as his capability was not proportionate to solve his problem. He did not notice that his father was looking at him while he was playing. His dad’s happiness was replaced with worries when he saw his son in trouble. He rushed to his kid and asked, “What happened my dear? Have you done all in order to retrieve your toy?” The boy replied, “I can’t get my toy that disappeared underneath the pile of firewood, Dad! I’ve already done everything in order to get my toy; but, I had no chance nor enough strength!” And the father calmly said: “Son, you haven’t done everything yet. You always have to remember that you have your Dad—your father, who will always be there for you and always thinks about your welfare, who always loves you and is ready to save you from all distress, trials, and tribulations.” Now, if you only knew that I was there— if you only recognized your weaknesses—if you only knew that there is someone who is stronger and more powerful than you are; then, you could have called me for help so you could have avoided feeling this helplessness that resulted in tears.” Our parent’s love is unique. They know what we don’t know! Our God’s love is great; He knows us before we came from our mothers’ wombs. He knows that our problems are opportunities to showcase our potential. A being’s existence with and for another being is co-existence. May we all be blessed with all the joy that life can bring during the Season and throughout the New Year! www.AlbertaFilipinoJournal.com

out information and assistance for any type of challenge, not matter how big or small, how common or not. Commemorating December 18, the United Nations Declaration of International Migrants Day

A

ccording to the United Nations, the number of international migrants globally reached an estimated 272 million in 2019, an increase of 51 million since 2010. Europe hosts the largest number of international migrants (82 million), followed by Northern America (59 million) and Northern Africa and Western Asia (49 million). For our part, Canada is one of the top 10 destination countries. On December 4, 2000, the UN General Assembly, proclaimed December 18 as International Migrants Day. Ten years earlier the UN assembly also adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. It supposedly meant to recognize the rights, protection, and respect for migrants. It also acknowledge migrants’ contributions to their home and host countries. Canada has not signed into the international Convention. And it hasn’t helped in the dire conditions faced by migrants globally. Former immigration Minister Ahmed Hussan said “migration serves as a powerful driver of economic growth, dynamism and understanding for Canada. Many migrants arrived in Canada seeking freedom and opportunities under

various immigration status. Because of the countries of origin lack of or no opportunities to live, migration allows millions of people to seek new opportunities. Both countries of origin and destination countries benefit from it”. The countries have enormous monetary and labour benefits, at the cost of migrants themselves. Many migrants in Canada fear of being sent back to the country which they left. Migrants are often forced into precarious work and some are afraid to seek medical help out of a concern that their status situation will be reported to authorities and they will be deported. Global migrants are often pushed out of their countries. Last year Thousands of migrants have arrived at the US-Mexico border after travelling on foot for more than 4,000km from Central America. Migrants from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador are fleeing persecution, poverty and violence in their home countries. I was privilege enough to meet some of them in Mexico on November 2018. It was the first round of migrants caravan that came in Mexico. Many of the people I talked to said their goal is to settle in the US. They were willing to risk everything even if it means arrest, prosecution and deportation.

MIGRANTS' VOICES

Marco Luciano mluciano2@gmail.com Marco Luciano is the Global Council Representative of Philippine based Migrante International. He is also the current Secretary General of its chapter Migrante Canada.

From a couple of thousands that was at a Mexican stadium when I was there, they have grown into tens of thousands now staying in temporary shelters in the border cities of Tijuana and Mexicali. In some reports there are more than 50,000 people are currently being held in United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities. According to the same report, more than 11,000 children are now in the custody of U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS), which holds “unaccompanied children” for long periods of time separated from their mothers. Another aspect of migration that is currently picking up a steam is the so-called Climate Induced Migration. Some call it “Climate Refugees”. A decade ago, the concept was relatively unheard of or ignored. Now, the term and issue is widely used by governments, UN bodies and media across the world. According to Environmental Justice Foundation, “Between 2008 and 2016, 21.5 million people were displaced by climate related disasters”. It is now

more than those fleeing wars or persecution. The extreme weather events continued to claim lives and livelihoods across the globe. In the Philippines alone, super typhoon Haiyan displaced an estimated 4 million people in 2013. As forced migration take on centre stage as the issue of our global community, Migrants from different walks of life are also organizing themselves. On December 1st a chapter of the International Migrants Alliance (IMA) was launched in Ottawa, Ontario. The event brought together grassroots organizations of refugees, migrants, immigrants, and all those in support of its causes. Since its founding in 2008, IMA, currently based in Hong Kong aimed to strengthen and put forward the voice of the grassroots migrants on issues affecting them and their families. From issues of remittance to rights and welfare to the resolution of forced labor migration, the IMA lays down its analysis from the grassroots migrants’ point of view and challenges the current system and its mechanisms. Migrante has been a member of the International Migrants Alliance (IMA) since its founding in 2018. In 10 years and with 140 member

organizations from across the globe, the alliance’s diverse militant grassroots membership represents communities from the Philippines, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Palestine, Central America, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, Turkey, South Asia, Korea, Hong Kong, the U.S. and Canada. The Canada Coordinating Committee of IMA was elected. The committee members are: Kota Kimura, Japanese from Migrants Resource Centre Toronto, Mayjane De Guzman from Migrante Ottawa, Diana Hernández and Rudy Alvarez, both Central Americans from Immigrant Workers Centre in Montreal and Naiah Albacea from Filipino women’s organization Gabriela BC. Meanwhile, Mexican colleague Viviana Carol and yours truly is represents Canada at the Hong Kong based IMA International Coordinating Body. The group also voted to have its next Assembly in 2021 This International Migrants Day 2019, let us think of the global migrants that are not as lucky as many of us. Many Filipino migrants from our community are also in a very precarious situation.

Quality Care Group of Companies' Kris Salumbides has accepted the position as director of the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine (PSSM). The PSSM is headed by Dr.Agnes Remulla, who is the head of the Sleep Laboratory at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. "I would like to help in the education of our Kababayans about sleep medicine," said Salumbides who met Dr.Remulla at a Sleep Conference in Vancouver. Salumbides, co-owner of a medical clinic, pharmacy, respiratory and sleep clinics in Alberta, will be sharing his knowledge as a registered sleep technologist in Canada to PSSM.

He said that there still a lot of work to be done in the Philippines to improve services to sleep medicine patients as efforts are in the works by Philippine doctors who suggested that hospitals should establish Sleep Centers inside the facility. "CPAP machines cost around 60,000 in Philippine pesos and that's hard-earned money by our Kababayan. Sleep study cost 25,000. The problem that we see is how to improve the service after they have CPAP machines," said Salumbides. He said that this is one of the areas he would like to see an improvement with PSSM.

donation drive for Edmonton’s Food Bank was organized by Quality Care Group of Companies in cooperation with the Benjie Lindo Live Updates on December 21 as part of the “Pasayaw sa Bayan, Give Love on Christmas Day” event at the Sejong Hall. Edmonton’s Food Bank has been experiencing a rise of request for food but donations have been down this year. Quality Care Group founders Kris Salumbides, Jesse Tallon and Jacob Christian have been encouraging the community to bring donation for the Food Bank weeks before the “Pasayaw”, a year-end event by the QCG that manages medical facilities like a family medical clinic and pharmacy, sleep medicine and medical supplies in Alberta province.

"This is one way of showing our love to the community," said the company co-founders. Non-perishable food item or cash donation are actually accepted year-round at Food Bank’s main warehouse on 11508-120 Street (Monday to Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – closed holiday weekends) “We are asking our donors to step up, as they have so generously in the past, to support Edmonton’s Food Bank. It is only with their generosity that we are able to provide the kind of support to the community that we do. We do not receive funding from any level of government for our programs and food purchases,” said Marjorie Bencz, Executive Director of Edmonton’s Food Bank on their website. “We are very concerned for 2020 if we cannot make our goals as we need to continue to help our community moving forward,” she added.

n accepting community makes all the difference, especially when we cannot accept ourselves. Those who truly love us remind us how to best love ourselves. Mental illness such as depression is a common medical condition with many emotional, physical, behavioural, and cognitive symptoms. However, because it is an invisible condition, many can choose to suffer in silence and some eventually decide to end their life. There is help available, whether it is counselling, our loved ones, or more. I want to remind you all that there is another day for you and there is more of life to experience. More of life to live remains on the other side of treatment. It’s important to remember that the disorder can typically be successfully treated. This coming Christmas, let’s remember that one of the best gifts we can give one another is presence. Let your loved ones know that you’d like to spend time with them; that you’d like to hear about how their lives have really been. Ask people, “How is your heart? How is your soul?” rather than just asking “How are you?” We can be better for one another, and it will be better for everyone.

Progress In Spirit Or Spirit In Progress? The Christmas Spirit I asked some of the employees here about the significance of Christmas Trees being displayed in the hallway. Most of them told me that it’s “the spirit of Christmas.” I teased them by saying: “If it’s the spirit of Christmas, why is it quite visible and on the other hand, almost blocking the hallway?” As far as I know, spirit is invisible. And, good spirit is not hindering or delaying someone from moving especially in a very congested hallway. If Christmas Trees in any places would only serve as obstacles; then, I would rather not see the spirit. Lol The spirit of the newly implanted project: The Connect Care For some, it’s implementation is an advantage; but, for so many,

this program is the otherwise. As you can see, these computers in the middle of the hallways are hindering and delaying other workers to access their desired destinations inside this building. Once again, it is true. And, 101% agreeable that progress being facilitated by technology should be upheld and implemented. Provided that the methods would be enjoyed, favourable, and beneficial to everybody. But look! How can other workers, staff, and pedestrians safely go through these corridors if these computers and even other professionals (They maybe bosses, managers, nurses, doctors, etc., et al.) are most of the time, in the middle of the hallways. If this is what they called spirit, well, I don’t like to see them!” Lol

What is Biometrics and who needs to give biometrics?

B

iometrics, specifically fingerprints, are used to establish the identity of applicants at the time of application and as a program integrity tool. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced the collection of biometrics last July 31, 2018. It became mandatory for people from Africa, the Middle East and Europe. It was extended to Asia, Asia-Pacific and the Americas on December 31, 2018. An applicant between the age of 14 and 79 needs to give biometrics if applying for: - a visitor visa, - a work or study permit (excluding U.S. nationals), - permanent residence, or - refugee or asylum status, unless you are otherwise exempted. Starting December 3, 2019, biometrics is now required of foreign nationals applying within Canada as a foreign worker (including extending the work permit), international students (including extending the study permit), visa-required visitors (including extending the stay) and permanent residents. According to IRCC, biometrics are used to allow visa officers to screen applicants for prior criminal convictions or Canadian immigration infractions. It is also used to confirm the applicant’s identity when they enter Canada. Please note that you can only give your biometrics as part of your application to IRCC. You can refuse to give your biometrics (fingerprint and photo). However, if you decide not to give your biometrics, IRCC will REFUSE your application. You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years. You don’t need to give your biometrics again until the 10-year period expires. There is a fee to do the biometrics, and it costs $85.00 CAD for an

Because they put the country and the people first above any political ambitions. Take the analogy of a student driver. Of course not, even if everyone watching approves of the driving, good sense should always prevail. Armie Harley Pedia: Pano na? Mhei Lahny: Mas worst is to less the student benefits. And we need to pay more. My children is in elem. And H.S. Sabi ng mga teachers ng anak ko kagagawan daw ng conservative party. Magar Lucenara: Thats the world of politics, whoever sits in their, they have the same views and principles in order to carry out successfully their political goals and/or needs... but in this case either they are power seeker or power hunger.... Power seekers has mastery of telling the people what they want to hear. While, Power hunger are covetous, grasping, and avaricious.. also known as "economics of politics" we usually assume that politicians are motivated not by greed but by power hunger.. so the question is " Does democracy motivate power hungry politicians to do good despite their bad intentions?...

‘Magnitude of the Advent Season’

T

he Advent season is a meaningful time for all of us to reflect and prepare for what is to come not only for Christmas but beyond the blessed holiday. Advent is a beautiful moment to offer prayers to our Lord Jesus Christ and seek guidance and direction to help fulfill our purpose. What exactly is Advent? The word originates from a Latin phrase meaning, “The Lord is coming.” During the third Sunday of Advent, a key color within the candles that is lit is ‘rose’ or ‘pink’ if you will. The symbolic meaning behind this color is slowly easing us into the great excitement and joy we will soon experience when Jesus is born on Christmas Day. The third Sunday and every Sunday of Advent is about rejoicing and celebrating Christ who sacrificed everything for us.

Rotary Club Edmonton Strathcona

Another key aspect during the Advent season that many individuals indulge in is the use of Advent calendars. Often, we use these calendars as little treats, we look forward to every day, which is great! But it is important to remember the importance of the Advent calendar as a time of preparation for the joy we experience with family on the day that Christ was born. It is little items of symbolism like the Advent Calendar that we must make mental notes of in recognizing the magnitude they have for one of the most important days of the year. With Christmas only a few days away, we must reflect on the true meaning of Advent and make a continuous effort to strengthen our faith and strive to be closer with God. God bless you all and see you in the new year. And remember, keep Christ in Christmas!

It was overwhelming that all shows were sold out and were followed by a grand standing ovation from the audience. Directed by Ms. Fiona Williams, the Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age, featuring show-stopping song and dance numbers. All the cast was amazing both in acting and singing. The musical was accompanied by a live ensemble representing the Archbishop MacDonald High School Band.

THE PULSE OF THE FILIPINO COMMUNITY IN THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA, CANADA

From the Desk of the Publisher With 2019 coming to an end, we look forward to a brand new year unfolding in 2020. Despite the economic woes, the doom and gloom news from around world, the Alberta Filipino Journal is still thriving, giving you, our readers, reliable news. What better way to end the year than to celebrate Christmas with our family, the staff, the columnists, journalists, photographers, and their families who, year-round, religiously and consistently supported our mission to our community? From the publisher’s note, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you to our readers, our advertisers, and the Alberta Filipino Journal family. You have done noble deeds for our “kababayan”. Further, this paper would not exist if not for the inspiration of Rosalinda Linsangan Natividad-Cantiveros of Winnipeg, who engaged her entire life in service to the Filipino community and to Rod and Ron Cantiveros, my mentors.

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous and Productive New 2020 Year. JOB WELL DONE.

Quezon’s Game: the Largely Forgotten True Story of Holocaust Heroism ARTOSPECTIVE - an artist’s point of view

ccording to R. G. Collingwood, “History is for human selfknowledge ... the only clue to what man can do is what man has done. The value of history, then, is that it teaches us what man has done and thus what man is.”

On January 2020, we will have a chance to reflect on this with the North American screening of the film Quezon’s Game. How many know of the Filipino Oskar Schindler, who is no less than President Manuel L. Quezon? Director Matthew Rosen rectifies this through his feature film directorial debut Quezon’s Game, which premiered in May 2019 in the Philippines. Manuel Quezon was the President when the country was a Commonwealth under the United States’ jurisdiction. At a time when most countries were reluctant in assisting Jews who were being sent to death camps, Quezon worked to grant asylum in Manila despite various setbacks (his failing health due to tuberculosis, resistance from colleagues, Philippine-US politics), even housing them in his family property in Marikina. Although Quezon’s intent to rescue 10,000 Jews was abruptly curtailed by the Dec. 8, 1941 invasion and three-year

occupation of the Philippines by the Japanese, he succeeded in welcoming more than 1,200 refugees. Quezon’s Game director, Matthew Rosen, is a British national residing in the Philippines, and with Filipino wife Lorena Rosen, co-producer for the film. They first heard about Quezon’s efforts in 2009 from members of the Jewish Association of the Philippines. “I am a Jew who grew up in England and have experienced bigotry,” Matthew Rosen comments, “but after 37 years in the Philippines, to this day, I have never come across prejudice, dislike or distrust because I am White or Jewish. I’m Pinoy at heart and this was truly a passion project for me. The story behind Quezon’s Game remains a reflection of the Filipino people today, a warm and welcoming culture. In a time of war, when the rest of the world was in despair and apathetic, the Filipino people—who were suffering their own hardships—shed a light

on justice and morality to lead others. Quezon fought a lonely battle for what was right up until his untimely death. The message of this amazing story, which was largely forgotten, is more important than ever in today’s growing climate of intolerance—and my wife, Lori, and I wanted to tell it. It’s my ‘thank you’ to the Philippines.” The US/Canada theatrical rollout will mark the 75th anniversary on Jan. 27 of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Nazi’s most-notorious concentration camp. Quezon’s Game stars Raymond Bagatsing as President Quezon, Rachel Alejandro as his wife Aurora, Kate Alejandrino as their daughter Baby, Billy Ray Gallion as the Jewish cigar maker Alex Frieder, James Paolelli as American diplomat Paul V. McNutt, and David Bianco as future president Dwight D. Eisenhower who was then the chief aide to General Douglas MacArthur. The film is abundant in symbolism and intentional in honouring the people in this tragic moment in history. It’s theme song is performed by Shulem, a rising star of the Jewish music tradition, backed by the ABS-

CBN Philharmonic Orchestra. The original soundtrack features songs composed by concentration camp prisoners, Karel Švenk and Z. Stryjecki, granted by the Terezín Music Foundation (TMF), a nonprofit dedicated to amplifying the musical legacy of the artists imprisoned at the camp, where a group of prisoners composed and performed music that nourished spirits amidst the great suffering around them. Quezon’s Game has garnered awards at international film festivals for acting, direction, cinematography, original score, lighting, screenplay and design. It is critically acclaimed: “...the scope and enormity of Schindler’s List ... Quezon’s Game delivers the same powerful message against racism, bigotry and discrimination … a very compelling and deeply moving film …” - Esquire Philippines; “the story of Quezon’s Game is nothing short of magnificent.” - Business Mirror; “Gripping performances …” - ScreenRaven. "The difference between Schindler's List and Quezon's Game is that the former studies the horrors continued on page 23►

of war and you feel broken about humanity when you leave the theatre, while the latter is about hope and the humaneness of the Filipino people. When you watch Quezon's Game, you'll feel proud as a Filipino," Matthew explained. When you watch Quezon’s Game, make sure you don’t miss the closing credits which is accompanied by testimonials of now-elderly survivors who emigrated to the Philippines as children, Max Heintz Weissler, Lotte Cassel Hershfield, Margot Pins Kestenbaum, and Margot’s son, Danny Pins, recalling the events that reshaped their lives. In recognition of Quezon’s moral courage and the consequent deep ties between Israel and the Philippines, Israel instituted an open-door policy with the country, permitting visa-free visitation by Filipino tourists. In 2009, an Open Door monument was erected in Tel Aviv in commemoration of this act of humanity. Today, the Jewish diaspora in the Philippines

remains a vibrant and welcoming community, with the descendants of refugees rescued by Quezon numbering around 8,000, according to a 2017 estimate by the Israeli Embassy. This is the kind of story we need in today’s climate of tenuous, intolerant and cynical humanity and politics. That we be inspired by this story of doing what is right despite astronomical obstacles, of an act so selfless and remarkable, yet makes one ask to his dying day, “Could I have done more?”. Quezon’s Game then is a study of not only history, but of benevolence. Quezon’s Game is a Star Cinema/ABS-CBN Film Productions production in association with iWant and Kinetek. t started 5 years ago, when we planned to migrate to Canada under the Federal Skilled Stream Program. It was very clear to me that the practice of engineering in Canada is a regulated profession and I made sure that migrating to a different country would not hinder me from practicing my well-loved profession. I started the process by learning about the licensing requirements while applying for our immigration. I started my application to APEGA even before I landed in Canada. For internationally educated engineers, wherein tertiary education was not as recognized as the first world countries – there is no impossible way for an individual to attain their goal of being a Professional Engineer. My case is no longer different from those who applied and eventually got their Professional recognition. My journey is far better that those who are still struggling for years to have their credentials be recognized. My sacrifices and challenges are far easier than those of other Professionals who are still in the middle of chaos on how they can return to their professions. Look not on the “journey” you have been through, but look up the result when you do your part in pursuing your goal of returning to your profession. Below are my timelines of the process in gaining my Professional Engineering License. June 2014 – I started reading all the requirements for credential evaluation and experience requirements I need to comply with my Professional Engineering application to Canada. Reading blogs, the website of Engineers Canada, APEGA website, ASET website, PEO website and all other related articles published on the web. October 2014 – My College transcript and diploma and other documents

ENGINEER IN ACTION

Mervin Cereno, P. Eng. mmcereno@gmail.com Mervin Cereno is a Filipino immigrant in Canada. He is a Filipino-Canadian Engineer licensed to practice Engineering in Alberta and is employed by one of most sought after Engineering Consulting Firms based in Edmonton as a Structural Engineer who designs small to medium-rise commercial and multi-family buildings. He is also a volunteer and advocates to help Filipino-Canadian Engineers pursue their Professional Engineering License in Canada. were sent to APEGA for their evaluation. (They have a different process now – it will be through WES). I also paid the necessary application fees. February 2015 – I started to review for my Fundamentals of Engineering Exams. October 2015 – I took the Fundamentals of Engineering Exams (FE) and I passed. December 2015 – I submitted the completed Work Experience worksheet. January 2016 – My references replied. March 2016 – I landed in Canada as an immigrant. May 2016 – I started to study for

the National Professional Practice of Engineering (NPPE) Exams. June 2016 – I took the NPPE and I passed. September 2016 – I applied and was accepted into the University of Alberta‘s Masters of Engineering Program. October 2016 – APEGA gave me Provisional Status. I complied with all the requirements (Education and Experience) EXCEPT the one year of Canadian Engineering Experience. February 2018 – I started working as an Engineer-in-Training under the supervision of a Professional Engineer in Edmonton. March 2019 – I updated my Experience requirements as I have already completed the required one (1) year Canadian Engineering Experience. November 2019 – APEGA finally granted me the Professional Engineering Status. The reason I wrote this article is to give the readers an idea and motivation that for Internationally Educated Engineers, it is never impossible to achieve your goals. For some, it is longer than expected but it is dependent on how you will strive harder and push yourself to the limits. For me, the future is still unknown – but I am confident that I have enough weapons to face further challenges. I am proud of my achievements and wish to be an inspiration to others.

Cardinal Tagle is rising star

C

ardinal Luis Antonio “Chito” Gokim Tagle is Primate of the Philippines and archbishop of the diocese of Manila. He is the country’s 32nd archbishop and when he was named a cardinal in October 2013, he became the second youngest cardinal in the world (he is just two years older than Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal of India). Cardinal Tagle is already a household name in the Philippines and is often seen around Manila, commuting to work on his bike. At 62, he is one of the youngest “papabile” (one who is likely or possible candidate to be elected pope). Many Filipinos are hoping he will become Asia’s first pope. Fr Francis Lucas, executive secretary of the Filipino bishops’ commission on social communication and mass media, believes Cardinal Tagle has the qualities necessary to be the next Bishop of Rome. “He’s humble, meek, simple, bright, media-savvy, spiritual,” he told GMA News. “He prays a lot… you can’t see any conceitedness in him.” Born in Manila on June 21, 1957 to Manuel Topacio Tagle Sr and Milagros Gokim Tagle, he and his only brother, Manuel Gokim Tagle Jr, were brought up in a devoutly Catholic environment. At the age of three he was already able to recite the rosary. He went to school at St Andrew’s in Parañaque City where he hoped to become a doctor. But when he visited with his parish priest he was struck by the needs of a poor parish and felt a calling to become a priest. As a seminarian of the San Jose Major Seminary he read philosophy at the Ateneo de Manila University, the second highest-ranked university in the Philippines. He then went on to study theology at the Loyola School of Theology. He completed his licentiate and doctorate at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC., where he earned a doctorate in theology, writing his dissertation on the evolution of episcopal collegiality since the Second Vatican Council. He was ordained to the priesthood at the age of 24 and was appointed pastor at St Augustine parish in Mendez, Cavite. He taught theology at three different seminaries, one in Cavite and two in Metro Manila. In 1997 Blessed Pope John Paul II appointed Fr Tagle as a member of the International Theological Commission, where he became a close collaborator of Pope Benedict XVI, who was president at the time. Assisting the Holy See and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Tagle played a key role in examining and addressing doctrinal questions. Fr Tagle developed ties with the progressive theological School of Bologna, contributing to the school’s controversial history of the Second Vatican Council project, which interprets Vatican II as a “new beginning” for the Church. In 2013, Pope Benedict appointed Fr. Tagle cardinal. When Cardinal Tagle received the red hat, he broke down to tears, which led an observer to comment, “A leader of the Church can be emotional at times, but not all the time.” Cardinal Tagle apologized to Pope Benedict XVI the next day. The Pope replied, “No, you don’t have to say sorry. We need heart in the Church. In 2015, Tagle was elected president of Caritas Internationalis, the global confederation of national Catholic charities; he was re-elected to the position in May. And, in late 2014, he was elected to a sixyear term as president of the Catholic Biblical Federation. (Source: Catholic Herald) The Red Pope Recently, Pope Francis announced a significant appointment. He appointed Cardinal Tagle as prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. In his new role in the Catholic Church, he will head the office that deals with most of the dioceses in Africa, Asia, and Ocenia and shape the church in these territories. His appointment is very important because the influence of his congregation is far-reaching. Originally called the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Propaganda Fide), it was created in 1622 to deal with the missions opened up by European colonization. PEREZCOPE

Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com I am a writer/columnist/journalist. I have two weekly columns -- "PerryScope" and "Balitang Kutsero." They're published in more than a dozen Filipino newspapers in five countries.

The Propaganda Fide, “Prop” for short, does the work of both the Congregation for Bishops and the Congregation for the Clergy. The Prop is responsible for nominating and supervising bishops throughout Asia, Africa, and Oceania, which is about one-third of the dioceses in the world. As prefect, Cardinal Tagle will look for candidates who will support the pastoral vision of Pope Francis. His congregation can also influence how seminaries train future priests. Under the proposed reform of the Curia, the congregation will have two sections: one for the missions and the other re-evangelizing the old Christian Propaganda world. This has led many Vatican observers to refer to its prefect as the Papa Rosso (Red Pope), for the scarlet robes that the cardinal wears. Coming from Asia, Cardinal Tagle will be sympathetic to Pope Francis’ desire that Christianity reflect local cultures and traditions rather than simply imitating how Catholicism is lived in Europe. As prefect, Cardinal Tagle will also distribute funds collected by the Society for the Propagation of the

Faith, which supports missionary work around the world. Here he could direct the money to serve the people rather than the clergy. Pope Francis wants a poor church serving the poor, yet in some missionary countries the clergy live better than their people. Cardinal Tagle is an enthusiastic supporter of Pope Francis, who needs all the support he can get from the Vatican’s Curia. Cardinal Tagle shares the same pastoral approach to church issues as does Pope Francis. He definitely is pro-Francis and would support his agenda. It is expected that Cardinal Tagle, known as the “Asian Francis,” would seek to appoint bishops for missionary territories that would be in the mold of himself and Pope Francis. Pope Francis’successor But Tagle’s high-profile appointment has all the benefits of being close to the powers-thatbe in the Vatican. It certainly grooms him as a “papabile,” a strong contender to succeed Pope Francis who turns 83 later this month. In any case, the decision to choose the next pope rests on the cardinals who will elect him at the next conclave. Cardinal Tagle is supportive about the agenda of Pope Francis, speaking out for migrants and refugees, and trying to implement the Gospel of the Poor in his role as President of Caritas, the Church’s charitable arm. Cardinal Tagle is a passionate communicator, having hosted hour-long television programs in the Philippines on the Bible and questions of faith. He comes over as humble and joyful, and regularly tears up when talking about the suffering of people he has encountered through his ministry.

New Mentality Rome can no longer see itself, and Europe, as at the center of Christianity. It is tasked with serving the growing missionary churches. Propaganda Fide, some in Rome argue, has been one of the slowest to adopt this vision, and to adopt the reforms of the Second Vatican Council which sought to give a voice to local churches and bishops. Like Pope Francis, Cardinal Tagle is a Roman “outsider” having never studied or worked in the Eternal City until now. The decision to give him one of Rome’s biggest jobs is a way of testing his mettle ahead of a future conclave. One of the reservations some have about Cardinal Tagle’s candidacy is whether he is robust and savvy enough to handle the brutal politics of the Roman Curia. Working at Propaganda Fide will be a chance to see how he fares. His potential as future pope will depend in his new role and what the cardinals think about the current pontificate at the next conclave. If they have a favorable impression perhaps Cardinal Tagle would seem more attractive. However, if they have a negative impression, the cardinals would thumb him down. But that is still in the future, which gives Cardinal Tagle enough time to do a great job as the Papa Rosso. Indeed, Cardinal Tagle is a shining rising star where evangelization of peoples of Asia, Africa, and Oceania would be on top of his agenda. (Source: National Catholic Register)

HOROSCOPE You may experience a burst of physical energy today that urges you to bring life to your emotions. Act out your true feelings at all times. Make it known that you're a force to be reckoned with. There's no need to be threatening or outwardly aggressive. Know that if someone taunts you, you have the strength and courage to defend yourself.

The day may barely get started unless you center yourself and ground your powerful emotions. Your usual detachment may help you deal with issues on a cerebral level, but today you need to be more emotionally receptive. Do what you can to bring more stability to your life. Take an aggressive stance toward completing any practical matters that are clamoring to get done.

Your practical nature should be appreciated under the prevailing aspects. There's a powerful force helping you in every task you undertake, and the strength of will to get things done. Feel free to tackle detail-oriented, menial tasks the have been crying for your attention. It's time to get these things out of the way.

You may have to take a break today from your time in the clouds. Touch down and deal with practical issues that you normally avoid. There's a great deal of strength to your emotions, and your nature is more aggressive than usual. Use this powerful energy combination to your advantage. Don't let others steer you in a direction you don't want to go.

Sudoku Puzzles are games of patience, numbers and genius! The satisfaction of solving a challenging Sudoku Puzzle is one of the greatest accomplishments any sudoku game player can experience. The rules are simple, fill in the blanks so that each row, each column, and each of the nine 3x3 grids contain one instance of each of the numbers 1 through 9.

Here is the puzzle. Good luck! The key today is to keep things practical. Try to keep your focus and hold your ground. People aren't going to be concerned with fanciful daydreaming, so keep these feelings to yourself. Do your best to tune into the energy of the group by helping out a greater cause in whatever way you can. Go into a garden and feel the dirt in your hands.

The good news is that today you should be able to find stable ground for your intense emotions. There's aggressiveness to your nature that may manifest. As long as you can keep this tendency under control, things should be fine. There's no need to cause a fight today. The key is to keep grounded and get things done. Practical issues will be of primary concern.

There's aggressiveness to your emotions today. This feeling will command your attention and demand that you be stable and reasonable regarding all tasks you undertake. Be honest and understanding. No one will understand obscure metaphors unless they have some practical use. Water your plants and clean up your yard. The closer you can be to the Earth today, the better.

Make the most of this day, because energy like this doesn't come around often. Feel the aggressiveness in your nature that urges you to get things done. Instead of getting frustrated by the number of tasks, feel the motivation within. Take care of practical matters and attend to issues regarding your goals and career.

www.AlbertaFilipinoJournal.com

Your emotions are going to have a special kick today, which you're apt to take very seriously. There's a strong instinct within you that's ready to defend your sensitive feelings. The trick today is to stay grounded and focused. Plan and organize and you'll be able to get quite a bit done. Don't act rashly if someone crosses you.

This is a terrific day for you. Not only are your emotions at a cyclical peak but they also have added strength that will help you stay courageous in the face of any opposition that comes your way. The good news is that your planning may pay off. There are strong forces at work helping you to make progress toward your goals.

Bring your flighty nature back down to Earth today. It's important for others to have their say. Don't interrupt when they're talking. Keep your mouth shut and your ears open. Reality will pay you back today for whatever seeds you've sown, favorable or not. This is a good time to take a walk in the woods and reconnect with the Earth.

Attend to your home today and take care of chores. Clean the floor, do laundry. Make lists and stick to them. You may notice that there is a strong grounding feeling to the day that helps you stay on task. Efficiency is the name of the game. You're likely to experience a surge of progress in your work that comes when your emotions are grounded.

ur world nowadays is very consumeristic. Many of us are buying things we do not even need. Consumerism is indeed modern slavery. It is called slavery because we are possessed by what we possess. We are owned by what we own. The Bible reminds us: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” The increase in prosperity is not making us humans more happy. Pope Francis, in his Advent homily Dec. 1, 2019, said: “Consumerism is a virus that affects the faith at its root because it makes you believe that life depends only on what you have, and so you forget about God,” he warned. “The meaning of life is not to accumulate.” Friends, we are reminded that our lives do not just depend on what we have. The meaning of our life is not to receive, but to give for life. It is not about accumulation; but it is all about contribution. My dear kababayan, if we wish to be happy, charity is the perfect key. Life improves when the pursuit of consumerism is removed. Finally, as we prepare for the wonderful season of the year, let us all be reminded that Jesus is the ultimate Reason for the Season. Let us celebrate Christmas with simplicity, faith, hope, love, and humility. The Pope says: “When you live for things, things are never enough, greed grows and others become obstacles in the race and so you end up feeling threatened and,

always dissatisfied and angry … ‘I want more, I want more, I want more,’” he said. “One has many goods, but no good is done.” Guys, we do not need a big wallet to have a big heart. The end of accumulation is the beginning of the joy of living. Just bear in mind that the greatest gifts are not wrapped in paper but in love. Give love. No greater gift is there than love. Conclusion: Love the giver more than the gifts! Blessings Fr. Jhack

The Significance of Being Insignificant 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 KJV OUR SCIPTURE TEXT 1 "Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man’s judgment: yea, I judge not myself. 4 For I know nothing of myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. 5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God." 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 KJV INTRODUCTION "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" Micah 6:8 KJV If we are in the ministry, we need to put this to heart: For every opportunity, there is an obstacle; for every goal, an opponent; for every victory, a defeat; and for every triumph, agony! Therefore, let us: ACCEPT OUR POSITION 1 Corinthians 4:1 "Let every man so, account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God." • We who would serve the Lord Jesus Christ should be ministers, not masters; stewards, not lords. • We are but servants of the Lord Jesus Christ. • We have no authority to propagate our own programs. • We ought to spread the Christian faith. • We must understand the significance of being insignificant. Note: Those who would be ministers of the Gospel of Christ must have the same attitude of humility as that of John the Baptist. He said, "…But He that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear…" (Matthew 3:11). How mighty our Lord Jesus Christ is, in comparison to John the Baptist. Those whom God puts honor upon, are thereby made very humble and low so that the Lord Jesus Christ may be magnified and glorified. They are made to be anything or to be nothing, so that our Lord Jesus Christ may be all and in all. • The proper attitude to take is this: We have left everything, Lord, to follow thee (Luke 5:11; 14:33). • The character and dignity of our Lord put an honor to our office. Though we are but stewards, we are not stewards of the common things of the world, but of divine mysteries. • NOTE: A steward is a person entrusted with the management of affairs not his own. A steward is a person who manages or disburses

for another or others. He is one in general charge of overseeing the servants. A “steward de facto” is no other than he who has the reputation of being such steward and yet is not a good steward in point of law. SERVE BY FAITH 1 Corinthians 4:2 "Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful." • We must preach the Word and not the chaff of our own inventions. • We must teach what Christ has commanded us and not the doctrines of men. • Being truthful to the interest of our Lord and giving our utmost for His Highest. • NOTE: We must make it our goal to be found faithful. It is written, "Moreover thou shalt provide out of all people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens." Exodus 18:21 KJV • For Integrity and honesty – men of truth, whose word one may take, and whose fidelity one may rely upon, who would not for a world tell a lie, betray a trust, or act an insidious part. Insidious means, treacherous; harmful but enticing. "Let not your heart be troubled; neither be afraid. Have faith in God." Mark 11:22 KJV Have faith in God – literally mean "Have the faith of God." This may mean have strong faith or have confidence in God; a strong belief that he is able to accomplish things that appear most difficult with infinite ease, as the fig tree wither away by a Word. • If you want to be great in God’s kingdom, be the servant of all (Matthew 20:27). SILENCE OUR CRITICS 1 Corinthians 4:3 "But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man’s judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self." • We who would be faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ must despise the criticisms of men for our own sake. • The best way to silence our critics is not to confront them. • The worst critics are the least qualified to give criticisms. • The most painful criticism comes when we don’t deserve it. Ignore unjust criticism! Sometimes we are criticized with no justification. This is a painful experience. But potentially, we can deal with it more easily than criticism which is justified. • One option is to remain aloof and ignore it completely. We should feel that unjust criticism is as insignificant as an ant trying to harm an elephant. If we remain silent and detached the criticism is given no energy. If we

feel the necessity of fighting it – in a way, we give it more importance than it deserves. By remaining silent, we maintain a dignity that others will come to respect. "If I care to listen to every criticism, let alone act on them, then this shop may as well be closed for all other businesses. I have learned to do my best, and if

the end result is good then I do not care for any criticism, but if the end result is not good, then even the praise of ten angels would not make the difference." Abraham Lincoln ACKNOWLEDGE THE LORD’S JUDGMENT 1 Corinthians 4:4 "For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord." • We are not going to stand or fall on the judgment of men, but by Christ’s judgment. "It is better to fall into the hands of God than into the hands of men." 2 Samuel 24:14 KJV • NOTE: It is not judging well of ourselves, justifying ourselves, that will prove us safe and sound. Nothing will do this but the acceptance and approbation of our Sovereign Judge. "Not he who commendeth himself is approved, but he whom the Lord commendeth." 2 Corinthians 10:18 KJV KNOW THAT THE LORD’S JUDGMENT SHALL COME 1 Corinthians 4:5a-5d "Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts:…" • There is a time coming when the Lord will bring to light the hidden things of darkness (secret sins) and make manifest the counsels of the hearts (hidden motives). • For it is written: "All the churches shall know that I AM HE who searcheth the

reins and hearts, and I will give to every one of you according to your works." Revelation 2:23 KJV Christians may well be patient under unjust criticisms, when they know such a day as this is coming. Therefore, "Prepare to meet thy God" Amos 4:12. KNOW THE REWARD FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE 1 Corinthians 4:5e "Every man shall have the praise of God." • Every man, that is, every one deserving of it, every one who has done well. For it is written, "His Lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." Matthew 25:21 KJV "Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Jesus Christ." Colossians 3:24 KJV "Serve the Lord with gladness: come before His presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are the people of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations." Psalm 100:2-5 KJV

The danger of e-cigarettes in teenage society. SORE TRUTH

Jomil Reyes A 17 year old grade 12 student at St. Francis Xavier High school

E

-cigarettes, or most commonly known as “vapes” have been sold in multiple stores for many years. However, illnesses linked to vaping has increased since. Vaping has remained popular among underage teenagers across the world, thus causing a number of teens to become very ill, which can then eventually lead to death. In addition, cannabis vaping products are legalized in many parts of Canada, making them accessible to teenagers to use. The number

of teenagers who vape marijuana has risen. Due to e-cigarette addiction among teenagers and reported illnesses that arise, high schools around Edmonton are constantly trying to find different ways to help students who are addicted. These include guidance counselling, giving student fines when they are caught vaping on school grounds, and suspensions. However, students ignore these and continue to vape. Recently, schools have removed bathroom doors, as many students tend to vape in the bathroom. This became a controversy around schools, triggering parents to contact the building attempting to put the bathroom doors back in place. The removal of bathroom doors angered multiple parents and students as it took their privacy away. The question lies in whether removing bathroom doors will decrease the

AMEN! amount of students vaping on school grounds. Many people will agree that vaping is less harmful than smoking; however, both are still harmful to the body with long-term effects. E-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is an addictive substance that can affect the developing brains of users, especially teenagers. Moreover, doctors across Canada are concerned and worried about the health of people using e-cigarettes, most especially teenagers, as using these for a long period of time has some serious long-term effects in the body. Studies show that the use of e-cigarettes is highly linked to respiratory diseases, which include chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, chronic bronchitis, and asthma.
