s writers, we continue to produce knowledge and become more creative thinkers amidst crisis. We do transcend and in the long run, translate our worries into hopes and glories. On the other hand, as farmers, we never stop planting because of storm and flood warnings. The reason being is that we always look forward to something beneficial ahead of us. Our intention is to harvest plentiful fruits out of our laborious efforts and not to gain nothing or less. Paralleled to those two expositions I mentioned above are conspicuously evident to what this COVID-19 phenomenon is trying to imply. That, while it is currently and rampantly ravaging the world of men; our primordial

role is to protect ourselves from its raging powers by hiding inside our houses or wherever is the safest refuge where we think we could best survive. Yet, we should never give up hoping that by FIGHTING, there is a better or greater chance of WINNING!” After this lengthy exposition, what I really would like to emphasize is that, amidst this, what we call TOUGH OR DIFFICULT TIMES due to this PANDEMIC, we also have to be TOUGH AND STRONG. Please never stop hoping, trying, and having stronger faith. Please believe that we could be able to appreciate and gain more abundant blessings after every storm in our lives. As your editor-in-chief, I would really like to encourage you to stay connected with our community by

monitoring and abiding by what the proper authorities are telling us (Social Distancing, Hand-washing, Staying at home, Proper Hygiene, etc.) and by not withdrawing your contributions: as writers, readers, printers, layout artists, cartoonists, and especially, advertisers. You all serve as the vital components for why the Alberta Filipino Journal is circulating and indefatigably serving. Worry not about the printed materials because we also have the website and Facebook pages. However, this doesn’t mean we are not printing. So, on behalf of our publisher, I am inviting everyone to keep intact until the end of this battle. Never purposely devastate your crops before the storm arrives or strikes. Habang nasa Quarantine, Mananalo ang War Natin laban sa COVID-19! Keep safe and always feel valued!

his month, I had the pleasure to interview my childhood friend, Louise Ramos. She is a young Filipino Canadian studying oncology and seeking to create cures for cancer. Her bright mind and kind heart have always been an inspiration to me. Please enjoy this interview below… Could you tell me a bit about yourself and the work you do in oncology? My name is Louise and I am a student at the University of Sheffield in England pursuing a Masters in Translational Oncology. I have a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alberta with a Specialization in Molecular Genetics and my hope is to become a Professor in Oncology either here in Canada or the UK. I am a strong advocate for science education both at the university level and for the youth as well. Oncology is the study of cancer and for most people in this field, there is usually a personal association that drives us to pursue cancer research as a career. For me, that was the case as my family unfortunately has experienced more than our fair share of people affected by cancer and individuals who fought their hardest but could not make it through this illness. Growing up, I thought that the only way to help people in medicine was through being a

Pinoy sports organizers cancel all leagues, pray for better days ahead First, we would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family of Colby Cave of the Edmonton Oilers. The 25-year-old center died on April 11, four days after an emergency surgery. In a statement on nhl.com, his wife Emily said with "great sadness to share the news that our Colby Cave passed away". My wife Marj and I had the opportunity to watch the Oilers live at the Rogers Place, thanks to my compadre Warren Guillen of Lube City, and this sad news is just heartbreaking. We offer prayers to Emily and to the family.

Rest in peace Colby. *** Aside from karaoke and fiesta-like dinners, Pinoys love basketball and volleyball. In fact, I am impressed that despite their having two jobs in Canada, our Kababayans can still find the time to organize leagues and play their favorite sports. Unfortunately, the Covid 19 pandemic has forced the organizers to cancel their leagues. The Defenders and the Net Rippers were supposed to play in the St.Albert Ballers Club’s S-SABC Home League 2K20 finals last March 14. After that, a volleyball tournament was set to start on April 11

Red Deer Ballers Club's streetball 3 on 3 was also scheduled on April 11 at the Penhold multiplex gym. Rodel Gravides of Edson has set a league for 10 to 15 years old basketeers for April 11 to 12. Mishy Baranda of Edmonton Volleyball League announced that the COED tournament for March 28 was cancelled. Rey Nodado of the Cold Lake Filipino Basketball League will be organizing a two-day invitational tournament on June 20-21 and I hope and pray that this pandemic will be over by that time. However, we really do not know when this pandemic will be over. We are currently glued to our

TV or radio for news and hopefully we will hear some good news soon. *** There will be no golf too for Kuya Abel Cereno in Edmonton and Armun Violan of Calgary. Armun has suggested that I download Golf Clash for the meantime, hahahaha. Thank goodness, we have a reliable internet connection in Canada. I just could not imagine what sports life would be without internet. *** To all members of the sports community, let us continue to pray for better days ahead and stay safe.

of science that are still considered unbalanced in terms of gender and race; however, Oncology and Biology are one of the most welcoming and diverse fields. I have had the privileged of working with brilliant minds of different backgrounds and have been treated equally to my colleagues. There have been instances where being a woman has made certain individuals not take me seriously, however, it was from rising above their ignorance that I have gained the confidence in my abilities as a scientist. As I look at the world, I can see that things are constantly changing and dynamics are shifting in favour of equality. If we continue on this path of openness and acceptance, I think that the world of science will evolve for the better.

suffer during their treatments and to give them more time with the people they love.

Inspiring Filipino Youth doctor. Up until high school and a little through university, I had the mindset of going into medicine to be an Oncologist. It wasn’t until I learned more in my undergraduate about how genes influence the development of cancer and that there are ways to target genes for its treatment. After graduating university, I was a little lost. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I did know that I did enjoy my research project in my last year of university and knew that I wanted to do something with cancer. Around this time, I became friends with a master’s student who told me about his experience in academia which inspired me to pursue a masters in Oncology. I looked for different ones around Canada, but the programs were not quite what I wanted to do. I wanted both to work in a laboratory, but to also have my research have an impact on patients. Thus, I found my current program, Translational Oncology, which aims to bridge the gap of treatments developed in a lab to clinical relevance. I am currently working with an amazing research group that is trying to develop a better cancer drug with fewer side effects to improve patient quality of life. What’s something surprising that you’ve found in your work? There are actually three things that I have found interesting throughout my journey as a scientist and as a person pursuing Oncology: 1. There are a lot of misconceptions about cancer There is quite the difference between what the public sees about cancer and what scientists in the field see. The media often portrays cancer as one disease that can be cured by one pill or the subject of conspiracy ads suggesting that the government is hiding the cure, or you can cure cancer through alternative methods. Cancer is more complex than most people realize. It is actually a compilation of 100 diseases in one and varies between patients. There are advancements being made everyday and passionate people are diligently working to a

better cancer-free future. 2. There is so much we still need to investigate I have learned that in science, it is ok to say “I don’t know” sometimes. There is so much information out there and every day there are new things being discovered. It is impossible to know everything about a topic or field, but, through collaboration with other scientists, you can build a more wholistic viewpoint. 3. People are very willing to share their stories and experiences with cancer once I tell them I am in cancer research Probably one of the most interesting things I have experienced over the years is that once I tell someone I am pursuing cancer studies, people would openly confide in me about what it was like when they got diagnosed with cancer or who they lost and how it affected them. I remember working a shift at a retail store where a woman told me she had lost her mom to ovarian cancer and asked ME if there is any way to prevent that from happening to her. I was 21 and barely out of university. But that didn’t matter to her. It doesn’t matter to most people what my age is or who I was, I represented an outlet to where a human and not the internet can have a more meaningful interaction and potentially give guidance. I never give irresponsible advice or tell them how to stop cancer. I listen, share my experience dealing with cancer patients, tell them people are working on better treatments, and let them know that if they have concerns to see a physician. What is it like to work in the sciences as a Filipino woman? Its interesting because I actually have similar experiences in two different countries. Studying both in Canada and the UK, I do not see many Filipinos pursuing postgraduate studies. When I was in undergrad, I was the only Filipino on my whole floor and, in my Masters, I am one of two Filipinos (only Filipino woman) in the whole Department of Oncology. There are certain sectors

What advice would you give to our generation of Filipino youth? If you love science or are even a little interested in it, I encourage you to explore that passion and do you research to see if there are ways to get involved as soon as you can. I know it can be scary to tell your family that you want to be something other than a nurse, doctor, or engineer. We need more brilliant Filipino minds to share their talents to help further research to develop better treatments, build better machines, and to bring an interesting perspective to higher education.

Do you have anything additional What has helped you to persevere you'd like to say? in the face of adversity? For Filipino parents who have I am thankful that I have such an children who show interest in science amazing support system in place to at a young age and are wanting to help me get through my tough times. pursue science as a career, nurture Science, although rewarding, is not their interests and help them along a profession you enter without your their journey however you can. share of challenges. HOW COVID- 19 IS AFFECTING IMMIGRATION, REFUGEES AND CITIZENSHIP CANADA (IRCC) I have been receiving several inquiries from clients and kababayans with regard to their existing applications with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Allow me to respond to common questions received from clients. What will happen to my immigration application? IRCC is continuing to accept and process applications. While IRCC continues to serve their clients, service disruptions and restrictions due to COVID-19 may have an impact on processing times, and the current processing times posted on their website may not be accurate. As announced, there are travel restrictions in place. However, no application in progress will be closed or refused due to a lack of documentation or inability to complete the application process in time, such as giving biometrics or completing an immigration medical exam, when travel reopens. Can we still submit an application to IRCC? Yes, you can definitely submit an application however, IRCC is encouraging applicants to submit an application online (Visitor Visa, Study Permit and Work Permit) because due to service disruptions related to COVID-19, they are experiencing

difficulties receiving and processing applications submitted by mail or in person at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). What should foreign nationals who are in Canada with valid temporary status as a visitor, worker or student do if their status is about to expire? Temporary residents who are currently in Canada are able to apply to extend their status online if they need to extend their status. A temporary resident who has applied to extend their status is allowed to remain in Canada until a decision is made on their new application, even if their initial status expires while they are waiting for that decision. This is called implied status. Applicants should not travel to a port of entry (POE) to apply directly to a border services officer. Travelling to a POE from inside Canada for the purpose of getting immigration services is not considered essential travel, and they will not receive these services. Can a foreign national with a valid visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) but no study or work permit come to Canada? While some exemptions apply, most foreign nationals who hold a valid visa or eTA ARE NOT able to travel

to Canada by air at this time. Some people may still be able to travel to Canada by air if they are exempt from the travel restrictions and are coming for an essential purpose. Will I be allowed to re-enter Canada if I’m a permanent resident? Yes, IF you’re a landed permanent resident and have no symptoms of COVID-19, you will be allowed to travel to Canada. However, you must isolate for 14 days when you arrive even if you have no symptoms as this is a mandatory requirement. If you are showing symptoms of COVID-19 you will NOT BE allowed to enter Canada by air. You can still enter at a land border and must isolate for 14 days when you arrive as this is a mandatory requirement. You have to make sure that you have a valid permanent resident card or a permanent resident travel document when you travel. Please be informed that IRCC has canceled all citizenship ceremonies until April 13, 2020, test and retests, as well as in person permanent resident landing appointments until April 13, 2020 and refugee claimants’ appointments. All landing appointments will be done by telephone whenever possible. Otherwise, IRCC will reschedule them for a later date.

IRCC’s temporary offices in Canada are closed until further notice. All Service Canada locations in the country are closed until further notice. Biometric collection is stopped until further notice. Some Visa Application Centres (VACs) have temporarily closed or are operating with limited hours and services. Please make sure you check the VAC’s website before you go. Passport services at all Service Canada offices are suspended until further notice. Information is changing constantly. You can check IRCC’s website for the most updated information. Wake-up call: PH doctors in dire need of PPE Early in the novel coronavirus outbreak, presidential spokesman Secretary Salvador Panelo defended President Rodrigo Duterte on his decision to allow the Chinese to travel to the Philippines. “No need to ban our Chinese friends,” he said. “You just need to boost your immune system.” That was on January 23, 2020, three weeks after the pandemic broke out. A week later, on January 30, 2020, Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go commented, “China is not the only country hit by the virus.” He said, “Other countries, too. It’s hard to single out China.” On February 3, 2020, President Duterte declared: “Everything is well in the country. There is nothing to be extra-scared of that coronavirus thing.” With President Duterte and his two close allies rooting for the Chinese, it left the doors wide open for Chinese tourists – untested of the virus -- to come to the Philippines, exposing the country to the virus. As the novel coronavirus (a.k.a. COVID-19) spread in Manila, Duterte – who had refused to impose a travel ban then -- abruptly imposed ground, sea, and air travel ban to and from China for a month through April 14, 2020. By the time he had imposed the travel ban, the COVID-19 virus had already spread in Manila. He ordered 40,000 police officers deployed to checkpoints on roads that lead to Manila. Each vehicle was stopped to check the IDs of the passengers and purpose of their travel. The officers also looked for people with symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever and coughing. Duterte then authorized sweeping quarantines in Metro Manila to fight the COVID-19 virus. He also banned www.AlbertaFilipinoJournal.com

large gatherings in the metropolitan area, suspended most government work, and extended the suspension of classes by a month in new restrictions announced in a nationwide TV address. He warned that violators and officials who refuse to enforce the restrictions would face possible imprisonment. “This is not martial law,” Duterte said, stressing that the restrictions are only aimed at fighting the COVID-19 virus. He himself was tested for the COVID-19 virus and has selfquarantined although he has no symptoms of COVID-19. He only wanted to make sure he was healthy and could continue to engage with the public. At least nine Cabinet members said they were exposed separately to COVID-19 patients and decided to self-quarantine. Several mayors and senators have also gone on home quarantine after coming into contact with patients.

It’s interesting to note that prior to imposing the travel ban, Duterte had allowed flights from China to the Philippines. The total number of Chinese tourists allowed to enter the Philippines at the time of the outbreak was around 4,500. He had resisted calls and pleas for travel restrictions, saying “Not yet” and reasoned that there had been no proven case off human-to-human transmission of the virus. “If there is the slightest possibility that a contamination could occur in the Philippines, then we will have to take measures,” Duterte said. “At this time there is no known protocol which we can follow to combat the disease. What we can do is to limit the people entering [the Philippines]. It could include China but at this time, I am not for it. It would not be fair [to China].” But would it be fair to allow people suspected of having COVID-19 from China to enter the Philippines? Health Secretary Francisco Duque reluctantly recommended banning Chinese nationals from entering the country. He said the government is looking at the ban as an option; however, he raised the issue that China might question why the Philippines is not imposing the same restriction on other countries? But Mr. Secretary, the virus originated in China; there were no other countries where the virus was found in large numbers at that time. Total ban The first case was a Chinese national who arrived in the Philippines on January 21. The man tested positive for COVID-19. It prompted Duque to immediately recommend a temporary ban on all travelers from Hubei province

in China, where Wuhan is. But some experts urged the president to go even further. Dr. Anthony Leachon, former president of the Philippine College of Physicians, recommended a “total ban.” “China is the main source of the coronavirus and with the most deaths and cases globally. Protecting our people from an epidemic is paramount,” Leachon said. “The deaths and cases are mounting – we need to do something.” “It is hard to say that you suspend everything because they are not also suspending theirs and they continue to respect the freedom flights that we enjoy," Duterte told reporters in an ambush interview. Once again, Duterte implied that he didn’t want to antagonize Chinese President Xi Jinping whom he was kowtowing to. But Duterte needs to realize that China is not banning travel between China and the Philippines because Filipinos traveling to China are not considered high risk for carrying the virus. Eventually, the Philippines suspended all flights from Wuhan and the issuance of visas upon arrival for Chinese nationals, albeit a little bit too late to stop the coronavirus from spreading in the country. Lockdown Leachon had told the media the only way to contain the virus was a lockdown of Metro Manila and its 12.8 million people. “If we will not avert the epidemic through a lockdown like in Italy, then our private and public hospitals will be swamped with patients and risk the lives of our health care professionals,” he said. On March 12, Duterte ordered the lockdown of Metro Manila.

Overnight, checkpoints were set up in every exit to and from the 16 cities and one municipality that comprise Metro Manila. The month-long lockdown was from March 15 to April 14. However, Leachon said, “It is likely this won’t go away in the next two or three months based on the China experience.” He warned that the outbreak would get worse before it gets better after a few months. “It’s unfortunate that the government did not accurately project the need for more test kits. But with lockdown and social distancing we will be able to contain the epidemic,” which is now a pandemic of global proportion. The pandemic has so far claimed the lives of 17 doctors who died while in the frontline battling the highly infectious COVID-19 virus. The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) has been critical of the government on its handling of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. PMA Commission on Legislation chairman Dr. Oscar Tinio believes that the deaths could have been prevented if there was enough supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) for the health workers. Further, Tinio pointed out that many practicing doctors with various specialties want to help in the war against COVID-19. But they are hesitant because of the lack of protective gear, which would expose them to the virus while treating patients. This is a wake up call. The number of frontline doctors and workers is dwindling. The doctors and workers are in dire need of PPE. Unless Duterte does something fast, he will be left with nobody to care for the growing number of COVID-19 patients.

Like any business in Alberta, the Construction Industry is also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Small consulting and construction firms depend on businesses that re-purpose existing buildings or construct new buildings to suit their business. With this pandemic, no business will open, resulting in the of halt new plans and future design projects due to the uncertain future. There are projects that are in the pipeline and design drawings that are on-going among different consulting firms but the uncertainties as to when this crisis will end is still a question. There are movements amongst different construction organizations to appeal to the Government of Alberta to keep the construction industry open and be recognized as an essential industry sector as a lesson learned from China – that should the need arise, the Construction Industry can be use for the immediate construction of temporary facilities in assisting the Government to fight against COVID-19. Just recently, The Alberta Construction Association, through the Calgary Construction Association,

the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, lauded the efforts of some MSMEs who have adopted online business transactions in order to ensure availability of basic necessities, such as food in the market and, at the same time, keep their businesses afloat to take care of their employees. “Marami pong negosyo na nag-adopt ng skeletal workforce at nag-implement ng tamang social distancing measures para patuloy na makapagserbisyo. The main objective of the guide is the health and protection of workers and others in the field. Jobsite sanitation measures, social distancing and strong risk management must be implemented at all times. In most consulting firms where their main role in a project involves design drawings, coordination and project supports – system will be in place for work-from-home policies through online collaboration among stake holders. CLASS OF 2020

W

hen people start high school, they’re usually anxious, scared, and excited all at once. They finally get to experience the “high school life” that everyone seems to talk about. High school is the time where teenagers can be kids one last time; making stupid mistakes and learning from them while at the same time, creating some of the best memories they will experience. In the middle of high school, some students may feel stressed out and want high school to end sooner. However, once graduation day is right around the corner, they wouldn’t want high school to end; as for the class of 2020, high school ended much earlier than expected. Ironically, before schools were shut down, the majority of students wanted the school to end. Yet when schools shut down because of the pandemic, most of the students that resented school wanted school back and to be able to attend school in person, rather than through the screen. This shows that people take things for granted, and do not realize how much they will miss it once it’s gone. Every student that is graduating in June is aware of what is currently going on in the world, and how the pandemic of COVID-19 is affecting their education, as well as their graduation. Many students are looking forward to walking across the stage on their graduation day and celebrating with their family and friends. As a senior in high school, I want nothing more than to make as many memories as I can in high school before entering the adult world. For a lot of people, graduating from high school is an achievement. High school takes a lot of time, effort, and motivation; however, it is one of the best experiences one can picture. The Class of 2020 is upset and disappointed over the fact that the students won’t get to experience things

that would also help them overcome this predicament. To avoid duplication and to ensure that more Filipinos benefit from various government programs, Go said the beneficiaries of the subsidy program for MSME employees must be different from 18 million low-income families being assisted by programs under the Department of Social Welfare and Development. DOF clarified that the government will only implement such assistance once the Department of Labor and Employment, through its Covid-19 Adjustment Measures Program (CAMP), has finished its assistance programs to avoid duplication. For affected workers in the formal sector, the DOLE’s CAMP provides qualified beneficiaries a one-time financial assistance of PHP5,000 and

such as planning and performing a senior prank, walking across the stage in June, and having a senior prom/banquet. These little things are the small bits that will complete the ultimate high school experience. Given that high school only comes around once, the class of 2020 will never get to experience them the way they should. As a senior in high school, I can agree that this pandemic is ruining our last year of high school, and the ability to physically get help from teachers rather than through emails. Moreover, because the schools shut down without any warnings, the adjustments students and teachers had to make were drastic. In fact, teachers are still figuring things out as to how things such as quizzes and exams will work. As for the students, they are having troubles adjusting to the new system of online learning. Therefore, for the class of 2020 to at least walk on stage, to have classes go back to normal, and for everyone to have the summer that they planned with their families and friends, everyone should take precautions and try to stay home as much as possible. If someone decides to go outside for reasons such as buying groceries, they should always wear a mask. This will ensure not only your safety but everyone else’s. For everyone’s lives to go back to normal, everyone must work together to fight this deadly Coronavirus.

employment facilitation services. The DOF will get the list of qualified beneficiaries for the subsidy program from the Bureau of Internal Revenue. They will be paid directly through the Social Security System and the amount of assistance may range from PHP5,000 to PHP8,000 depending on the region. The DOF has already exerted efforts to help the middle class by imposing a moratorium on payments of loan amortization, disallowance of compounded interest and penalties, as well as exemption from Documentary Stamp Tax. According to data collected in 2018 by the Department of Trade and Industry, over 998,342 businesses are MSMEs and make up 99.52% of the total enterprises operating in the country. (PR)

Today’s Reminder Feature: “THE ULTIMATE SECRET CURE (ANTI-VIRUS) to COVID-19!” When you add Jesus (“A” and “O” the first letters of the words “Alpha” and “Omega”) into your lives, then the word “virus” will no longer be VIRUS. Instead, it will now read and BECOMES “SAVIOUR”! If you really THINK about it: Our problems, including COVID-19, all started worldwide when we removed Jesus from our schools, institutions, government and basically from our life in the name of political correctness.

I now wish to give my two cents’ worth of thoughts on the current situation, by viewing it from another angle: the spiritual perspective. Now, don’t get me wrong. I do not mean to pontificate. I also do not profess myself to be an expert theologian. I offer here my thoughts as a layperson, a regular persistent sinner struggling every day to find my way to holiness. With this in mind, I now proceed to reveal the ULTIMATE ANTIVIRUS (CURE) to COVID-19!

“THE ULTIMATE SECRET CURE (ANTI-VIRUS) to COVID-19!”

God works in mysterious ways. Everything HAPPENS for a REASON and in God’s PERFECT TIME. In my humble opinion, through COVID-19, GOD WANTS to REMIND us that we all have gone ASTRAY. Pretty much similar to the situation Moses and the Israelites experienced in EXODUS. REMEMBER the PASSOVER? The ANGEL OF DEATH? What SAVED the Israelites? The BLOOD of the Lamb which they used to paint on the doors to their homes. “LAMB” is a TITLE for JESUS in the Gospel of John. It appears in John 1:29 when John the Baptist sees Jesus and exclaimed “Behold The LAMB of God who TAKES AWAY the SINS of the World!” It appears again in JOHN 1:36. Now fast forward to TODAY 2020 (the YEAR of PERFECT VISION) here comes all of a sudden this

And who KNOWS? If God SEES and HEARS us PRAYING TOGETHER as God’s people, maybe, well actually, I have a STRONG FEELING that GOD WILLING, this COVID-19 WILL JUST SIMPLY DISAPPEAR and FADE AWAY into the mists of obscurity and things will start to get better by EASTER SUNDAY.

It comes to us right BEFORE the HOLY WEEK of 2020. Coincidence? Happenstance? I DON’T think so. It comes with a Spiritual Message for RENEWAL His MESSAGE is very much

Now you may think it’s unthinkable. Not possible. But that’s us thinking with our limited human comprehension. But to and for our God, NOTHING is IMPOSSIBLE if He WILLS it. Never underestimate the POWER of PRAYER especially when we PRAY TOGETHER as God’s people. Remember there can be no Easter Sunday WITHOUT Good Friday. Have a BLESSED EASTER weekend Folks!

COVID-19 which has become a worldwide pandemic. Something the world has NEVER SEEN before. COVID-19, the “Great Equalizer”, affects all people and all races. It affects EVERYONE, rich and poor, young and old alike.

Well folks, the ULTIMATE SECRET CURE is right before our eyes. We just have to open our eyes and ears to this secret. Now READ this: This is THE ULTIMATE SECRET I am revealing to everyone today, Good Friday 2020. The CURE or ANTIVIRUS to the Virus (COVID-19) is actually… (Drum Roll!) JESUS! Some people may ask “How can He be? Jesus said “I AM the ALPHA and the OMEGA (the BEGINNING and the END)” (Revelations 22:13)

and the time for self-reflection and to be able to search for a deeper meaning of our lives.

LOUD and clear: “COME BACK TO ME!” What are we WAITING for? Let’s all RENEW our lives by bringing Jesus BACK into our lives and fervently praying to our SAVIOUR, the LAMB of God. The ALPHA and the OMEGA. The BEGINNING and the END.

FAME, POWER and FORTUNE, are all USELESS and WORTHLESS in the face of COVID-19. It disrupts ALL aspects of our lives. The CURE is Still UNKNOWN. It compels all of us to STAY at home. BUT it gives ALL of us the chance THE PULSE OF THE FILIPINO COMMUNITY IN THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA, CANADA

This Lenten season is a test of faith and renewal in times of COVID-19 It is the Lenten season in the year 2020. This year is different. This year, the whole world is experiencing turbulent times. The COVID-19 virus hits everyone and everything with a massive force that it affects not only those that are infected but every aspect of our lives. Each year, Lent offered to us a time of renewal. For Filipino Christians, we take up this season as a journey of personal renewal of our faith. Filipinos validate their relationship with the Lord. But this renewal only becomes concrete when it allows us to live our faith more authentically. The offering we do should help us express our gratitude and allow us to exercise generosity. However, Lent can also be a time to focus beyond ourselves. It can be a time of renewal that lets us hear the cry of the poor and grow in solidarity with them. This is also a spiritual renewal that helps us grow closer to our Lord. Didn't he tell us that if we wish to love him, we must express that love as love for the least of our brothers and sisters? We're in the midst of not only a health crisis but a global economic crisis. Many are forced to self isolate and stay in their homes. Many more don't have the privilege of being able to do that. Many of our kababayans are “front liners”.

MIGRANTS' VOICES

Marco Luciano mluciano2@gmail.com Marco Luciano is the Global Council Representative of Philippine based Migrante International. He is also the current Secretary General of its chapter Migrante Canada.

They are nurses, healthcare aides, home care workers. Many also work in essential services like the retail food industry. And many more are already undocumented so they cannot work as well as access support from governments. It doesn't take rocket science to understand who in our community is in need. Who appears to be suffering? Who is tremendously burdened? Not all the poor are in the news, but a simple scan of our community is a

place to start. Communities are quick to react. Organizations like Migrante are raising funds to purchase grocery cards and basic groceries for those that can't leave their homes. The organization has been delivering goods in the last two weeks. The Alberta Filipino Journal was also quick to support that initiative and donated 20 sacks of rice for our kababayans. AFJ Editor-In-Chief Lito Velasco quickly volunteered for the delivery of goods. Many other initiatives to help by organizations and individuals are happening in this time of crisis. It is our calling as Christians and as people. Unfortunately, there are few so-called leaders in our community that think of themselves before our people. One accused Migrante of being “an extension of our country's Political Regime internationally”. This is not the time for politicking. Asked what he thought about the statement, Migrante’s Vice Chairperson Jay Zapata said “Hayaan na natin sila. Kung gusto nilang tumulong, magpasalamat tayo, kung hindi salamat pa rin at nagpakita sila ng tunay na kulay (Let’s leave her alone. If she wanted to help, let’s thank her, if not let’s thank her too for showing her true colors)”. Reflecting on this polarized attitude during Lent, our good

deeds should be motivated by a sincere desire to help others. Public recognition should not be the goal. The Bible tells us to share generously with those in need, and good things will come to us in turn. We are not meant to live hard-hearted or selfcentered lives. A greedy, miserly life leaves us devoid of anything but an empty craving for more possessions, more power or more status. If we spend Lent reflecting upon the situation of those in need, we will begin to pray differently. It helps us pray with a renewed spirit. Our prayer for ourselves will

become a prayer that we might be transformed to be better servants for others, especially conscious of those on the margins of Society. Lent spent hearing the cry of our people starts with awareness. Hearing is turned into growing solidarity and leads to deeper compassion and transformative prayer. As the great Archbishop Desmond Tutu, once called upon us, in a plea for humanity: “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together”.

COVID-19 REIGNITES THE PINOY BAYANIHAN SPIRIT By Marco Luciano

Migrante Alberta, The Alberta Filipino Journal (AFJ), Congress of the Philippine Associations of Alberta (COPAA), and Coco's Nest Restaurant Team have joined forces to assist kababayans in Edmonton. In their own small ways, they were able to contribute whatever they can dole out for the benefits of our destitute or less fortunate kababayans. For instance, • COPAA, in cooperation with Coco’s Nest donated food vouchers and services worth $1,250; • AFJ, through the initiative of the editor and publisher, donated 20 bags of rice; • Edmonton fashion designer Fely Agader donated 100 reusable masks; • Fort Distillery, a local distillery in Fort Saskatchewan donated 25 locally produced isopropyl alcohol; • Migrante distributed 46 ($50) grocery cards and separately, also distributed groceries for 35 non-status people and kababayans in precarious situations who cannot leave their homes. Along with Migrante team of drivers, AFJ Editor-in-Chief Lito Velasco also volunteered in the delivery of goods. Funds were collected from individuals and groups in Edmonton that were used to purchase groceries and grocery cards. In addition to our effort to support our undocumented kababayans, we started a petition/ letter signing campaign to get support from the Provincial Government which was sent to all the MLAs this morning. The letter was signed by over 125 health care professionals all over Alberta. You can add your voice. Here is the link to the letter: https://www.migrantealberta.ca/health-care-for-all We will continue to collect support from you. Maraming Salamat po sa inyong kagandahang loob! $1 Million Fine & 3 Year Jail Time JUST LISTEN

Nicky Gocuan, PMAA ngocuan@yahoo.com As a journalist with over 14 years of experience, I have covered different events from rallies on the street, entertainment and international sports events like the Asian Games. My favorite pastime is singing. I have always believed that life would be boring without music.

Just recently, Premier Jason Kenney said that the Provincial Government will start to implement Track and Trace to help flatten the curve as cases of Corona Virus continue to rise in Alberta. This measure is in place to ensure that the mandatory quarantine to stay home for 14 days is being followed by Albertans returning from traveling abroad, those who test positive for COVID-19, or those who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. The Public Health Agency of Canada has also asked for assistance from the RCMP to enforce the March 25 Quarantine Act Order. In short, this is not only happening in Alberta. Officers will be visiting homes and talking to people who are identified to be under quarantine, to ensure that they are maintaining the social

distancing required. Violators who put the public at extreme risk will be fined $1 million and 3 years of jail time. This is no joke. While I believe these measures are late, it is better late than never. Canadian COVID-19 cases continue to rise because of poor tracking and tracing of possible COVID-19 carriers. However, using the RCMP to do house to house visits is a big task that will put our officers at risk and diverts government resources. Other successful countries who were able to flatten the curve through tracking and tracing is Taiwan. They made use of an app to track and trace individuals who entered the country and to make sure they follow quarantine regulations. The app is able to track the movement of the individual if they do not follow the regulations.

I highly suggest that the government look into this method. Canadians have raised privacy concerns in using technology to track and trace, but with the current Global Pandemic, what is really more important? The health of the general Canadian population or the privacy of the individual or few individuals who could potentially be carrying the virus that could kill a lot of Canadians? While I understand the importance of privacy, this is a temporary measure to help stop the spread of this very contagious virus. And to be honest, if the government or police wants to track you down, they will track you down either way. Technology is just the more logical way to go about tracking and tracing rather than having our police force devote manpower to it,

instead of fighting crime. With the bad economy comes the spikes in crime and we need our RCMP and the police to maintain peace and order. And did you know, that the tracking and tracing technology can also be used in hospitals to ensure there are enough beds and equipment to make our health care system more efficient? In these unprecedented times, everything is stressful and can be easily overlooked. This is where technology can help. Yes, this is possible. If you are curious about technology tracking and tracing to make things work more efficiently in this global crisis, you can always email me at ngocuan@yahoo.com and I will surely try to answer your questions.

Lara Andallo: the Filipino Triple Threat Artist from Down Under

O

ne of the upsides of social media is the opportunity to connect with people and relationships you would otherwise be removed from. It is fun to keep track of relatives, friends, and colleagues, and their movements, i.e. from the Philippines to different parts of the globe, and life milestones. One such connection kept alive by social media is with an elementary and high school classmate that has allowed me to see the growth and achievements of her young daughter. ow, this daughter is making waves in the Australian music scene, with the release of her debut R&B mixtape. She is no other than up and coming, triple threat artist, Lara Andallo. Lara’s musical influences go way back, when she started playing musical instruments from the young age of three. She played 10 years of classical violin, along with sax, drums, guitar and piano. At the age of 11, she focused on professional dance - ballet, contemporary, hiphop. She was home-schooled, to complete a Certificate IV in dance, dancing almost 50 hours a week. Her plans for a professional dance career went awry with surgeries on her ankle at the ages of 15 and 17. Faced with learning to walk again and unable to dance, Lara turned to music as a form of expression - writing about her devastation, isolation, of being culturally different, and peer abuse. At 17-years-old, Lara has signed with Warner Music Australia, independently released three bedroom recordings that were met with praise from likes of Off The Clef, Thank Guard and Complex AU & UK, and released singles ‘Confidential’, ‘180’ and ‘Said & Done’. Early this year, she released her mixtape “For Her” with tracks ‘365’, ‘Proud of Us’ and ‘Trophy’. Lara describes her sound as "R&B at the core, with heavier trap and hip-hop influences”. According to her, the process with “For Her” was like “subconsciously writing the songs to empower myself… and writing affirmations for myself. It is also for young girls specifically www.AlbertaFilipinoJournal.com

Ida Beltran-Lucila ida_b_lucila@yahoo.com

who feel like they are outsiders and don’t have a place in this world.” To celebrate the release, Lara played a headline show and showcased her soaring vocals and virtuosic dance skills. While she’s at the early stages of her musical career, Lara seems to have already made an indelible mark in the Australian, if not international, music scene. Music reviewer Thomas Bleach has dubbed her as “the R&B princess that Australia deeply needs”. Other praises - “At only 19 and with just two studio singles under belt, Lara Andallo is already one of the most promising R&B artist in Australia” – The Guardian. “The name Lara Andallo may not be familiar to you, but keep it on you radar” – Artist 1 On 1. “At just 19 years old, this Filipino-Australian artist is an absolute force to be reckoned with. ” and “...one of the most addictive R&B songs we’ve heard in a while” – Tone Deaf. “The way she maneuvers the melody of this recalls early Kehlani with a hint of SZA. It’s an exciting step forward and an anomaly for Sydney which hasn’t been known for it’s R&B in the past.” – The Interns. “...it’s those crisp vocals that take center-stage, soaring high with an intoxicating and utterly convincing hook.” - Life Without Andy.

Young as she is, I love how Lara’s story is a story of using her art as a tool for reflection and empowerment, of turning a dark time into a show of force, of overcoming difficulty, and a story of self expression and pursuing one’s passion. Lara Andallo is definitely a rising star in her own right. *Lara’s music is on all streaming platforms. You can also follow her on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Immigration fee increase by 50% effective April 30, 2020 By: Violeta G. Boquiren

T

he Federal Government passed amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection regulations increasing fees by 50% for some immigration programs effective April 30, 2020. This will be followed by more fee increases in 2022. The increase in fees was to keep up with inflation and to reduce the burden on the Canadian taxpayer for permanent resident programs and services by sharing the cost more equitably with the foreign nationals/applicants who benefit from these programs and services. A two-phased approach will start in 2020. The first phase will be an increase in the permanent resident fees under the economic class as follows: • Fees for principal applicants of the

Economic business class (including self-employed, start-up visa, Quebec investor, Quebec entrepreneur, and Quebec self-employed) will increase from $1,050 to $1,575 (an increase of 50%). • Fees for principal applicants of the Economic non-business class will go from $550 to $825 (an increase of 50%). Note: this increase will not apply to fees for principal applicants and their families in the Caregivers programs, which will remain unchanged. • Fees for spouses or common-law partners of all Economic classes will go from $550 to $825 (an increase of 50%). • Fees for dependent children of all Economic classes will go from

$150 to $225 (an increase of 50%). • The right of permanent resident fee will increase from $490 to $500 (an increase of 2%). Fees will remain the same for family class and other applications until 2022 – 2023 at which time, the second phase will be implemented with increases to fees as follows: • Permanent resident processing fees for all noneconomic class principal applicants (including the family, protected persons, and humanitarian and compassionate class applicants) will remain at the current rate of $550 until 2022-2023, when that fee will be increased biennially and rounded to the nearest $5, to approximately $570 in 2022-2023, to $595 in 2024-2025, and so on. Permanent

resident processing fees for all family members of principal applicants (spouses, partners, and parents

and grandparents, as applicable) will remain at the current rate of $550 until 2022-2023 when that fee will be increased biennially and rounded to the nearest $5, to approximately $570 in 2022-2023, to $595 in 2024-2025, and so on. • Permanent resident processing fees for dependent children and their family members will remain at the current rate of $150 until 2022-23 where they will be increased by the applicable CPI rounded to the nearest $5 on a biennial basis to $155, to $160 in 2024-2025, and so on. • Processing fee for processing an application by a person as a member of the permit holder class to remain in Canada as a permanent resident will be increased to $340 and then increased by the applicable CPI rounded to the nearest $5 multiplier every two years thereafter. • The fee to sponsor a member of the family class will be increased to $80 and then increased by the applicable CPI rounded to the nearest $5 multiplier every two years thereafter. • The Right of Permanent Residence Fee (landing fee) will be increased to approximately $520, and then increased by the applicable CPI rounded to the nearest $5 multiplier every two years thereafter. Fees for citizenship, permanent resident cards, permanent resident travel documents, certification or replacement immigration documents and biometrics are not affected by the amendment. Completed applications received before 9:00 am EDT on April 30, 2020, will be processed in accordance with the fee schedule in place prior to April 30, 2020. Applications received on or after 09:00 am EDT on April 30, 2020, will be processed in accordance with the fee schedule established in the Regulations. Applications received on or after 09:00 am EDT on April 30, 2020, that do not include the correct fees will be returned to the applicant as incomplete. Evidence of the correct fee payment needs to accompany any application for a permanent resident program submitted to IRCC.

‘Quarantine Queues’

D

uring this time, I am sure many of you, like myself, are experiencing a plethora of emotions regarding the COVID-19 pandemic which began in midMarch. It is completely ordinary to feel fear, sadness, anxiety, confusion, boredom, and overall uncertainty during these unprecedented times. However, despite many of us wanting to go out and enjoy our regular routines again, we must acknowledge this new routine the Federal Government of Canada has called upon us to practice, and that is to stay home. I know that this is difficult for many of us, but right now, we need to think of others that are experiencing the grueling agony of the Corona Virus and do our part to flatten the curve for overall cases in the world. Staying home during this time can truly save lives. This is not to say that you cannot leave your home at all times, but if you do, make sure to follow the recommended guidelines of social distancing yourselves of at least two metres from others and to only leave the home for necessary situations. For example, groceries and the occasional need for fresh air from time to time through a walk around the block or a quick jog. With many of you now staying at home, I recommend three activities you can engage in during this time period to help pass the time, but also make use of this time through productivity.

mental and physical health. With limited equipment at home, it is best to do calisthenic exercises that do not require fitness equipment. For example, push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, etc. Furthermore, you can easily find easy-to-do home workouts online. Yoga may also help in terms of meditating and trying to find relaxation during this stressful time.

Sportsmanship is a big slice of his cake. He is highly-spirited when playing golf, volleyball, and basketball and loves reading, writing and volunteering at church. Jan looks forward to taking up law after his undergraduate degree.

1. Working (School/Employment/ Development) – We can use this time to work remotely for the organizations we are currently working for, and perhaps get more done without that regular day to day commute time. This goes for students as well; we are able to do assignments and course work via the internet. Apart from work and

2. Exercise / Meditation – I know many of us use the local gyms around the city to get our weekly workouts in. However, with many of us selfisolating, we must all make some effort to continue to take care of our

3. Family Time / Personal Leisure Time – I believe that we will all get through this. There is no timeline for when will this end but during this period, I want each one of us to not take this time with our family for granted. Time is truly fleeting, and in the future when this pandemic blows over, I want all of us coming out of it with a new perspective on life. To not take the little things for granted, such as shaking a stranger’s hand, going to school, or going out to dinner. When will there ever be another time, to be with your family everyday in this fast-paced everchanging world? Play those board games, watch those movies, have those family meals together, believe me, it is one of the true blessings many of us have during this time. And if you get sick of hanging out with the family too much, try some personal leisure alternatives. Maybe call some friends, binge-watch shows, or do something you have been putting off for a while now. We all say we don’t have enough time. Well here it is, use this time to better yourself.

Identifying, Inheriting, and Blending Family Traits GENERAL POINT OF VIEW

Giselle General gqgeneral@gmail.com Giselle General came from the cold, mountainous region on the Benguet province, and immigrated to Canada as a teenager in 2007. After completing her Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta, she now dedicates her business training to the nonprofit sector, both in employed and volunteer capacities. She works at the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, which provides free legal help to low-income Edmontonians. She channels her creativity by writing in her personal blog, General Point of View, and has recently published a book of her poems and artwork titled The Humanity of Me.

Tito (Uncle) Bob is the remaining living brother of my father, the last relative of the older generation who share the same last name as me. On one of our dinners during the Philippines trip in 2018, he made a comment that is a play on words, and something he said with pride. “So, our family is known to be gener-ous, because we are the Gener-als! Get it?!” I kind of rolled my eyes at the pun, but I felt really good about this nice conversation about traits that seemed to be common in our family. There are obvious traits that each family unit is known for, whether these are described by my actual relatives, or observed by other people who spent time with us. It can be one’s immediate family, one’s first-degree relatives, or even the entire clan. From my experience, warm and heartfelt conversations are a rarity amongst my mother’s side relatives, because we are known for being relentless workaholics. Known to be organized, multitaskers, hustlers, persevering and practical, these traits certainly contribute to successfully launching businesses, or migrating to other countries and thriving. Since I grew up with them majority of the time, both in the Philippines and Canada, these are part of my own

AHS orders Edmonton Jollibee closed: Restaurant failed to comply with social distancing rules BY ALLISON BENCH GLOBAL NEWS

Alberta Health Services has issued a closure order to Edmonton’s Jollibee restaurant, saying it failed to comply with social distancing requirements related to COVID-19. On Wednesday, a notice from AHS posted at the restaurant said it had been shut down. A statement from AHS to Global News said that Jollibee was not complying with social distancing rules — both inside and outside of the establishment. “When businesses are unable to meet these requirements, we are left with no choice but to issue closure orders,” the statement said. AHS enforces chief medical officer of health orders where necessary. “During these difficult times, we are working with businesses to educate them on how they can operate safely for their staff and patrons,” AHS’ statement said. The restaurant will be closed until the order is rescinded by Alberta Health Services, according to the notice. Global News reached out to Jollibee for a response but did not hear back by time of publication. At the Edmonton location Wednesday, there were X’s visible www.AlbertaFilipinoJournal.com

on the ground in front of the restaurant where a lineup would form. Jollibee opened the location in Edmonton, the first in Alberta, last August. For months, hundreds of people lined up to dine at the restaurant. On March 27, when the province issued an order for all non-essential businesses to close, it said that restaurants could remain open — but for take-out only. Since then, there have been frequent vehicle lineups spotted onto Calgary Trail from the Jollibee drive-thru.

personal traits as well. For my husband, 2018 was his second visit to the Philippines. He is trying to seek out opportunities to get to know more both myself and my brother. As kids, after our parents passed away, my bother and I were separated many times and cared for by different sets of relatives for practicality purposes. As we visit each side of the family for various gatherings, my husband tried hard to listen and observe. Then, when we are able to talk again in private, he would share to me his observations, saying something like “Oh I see where you get this attitude from, and this is where you brother learned that perspective from”. During dinner, Tito Bob continued on, saying that the father’s side family is well known to act like a united front. “Together we stand, throughout life’s challenges” and “we may be poor, but we know we will be okay as long as we are there for each other”. I look back the annual trips that my brother and I do to visit those relatives and celebrate New Year’s Day with them. There were lots of large, loud dinners, children going from one home to another to hang out and play. Work or business transactions are hardly discussed. I think back on my tendency to pursue extra-curricular activities,

and as an adult, continuing to extend myself through volunteering when I could. I was not really encouraged to do that by the elders I lived with – the mother’s side. It was more a neutral or indifferent acknowledgement. But I kept on and found satisfaction in doing all of these. I wonder if that is something that I have picked up, an inherited tendency perhaps, that doing things I don’t get paid for but helps the community is worthwhile. My brother has a more skeptical and practical perspective on things, bordering towards cynical sometimes. That line of thinking is something I recognize more with my maternal grandmother, and from the perspective of self-preservation, I genuinely

understand. A challenge I’ve brought to myself is how to combine the best of both and allowing any weird personality traits that are uniquely me to shine through. It is important for me as well to put things into context and accept that certain ways of thinking just does not work anymore, and that’s okay. I think in a strange way, I appreciate my full name as it is, with just a singular first name, so there is space for both my middle name (my mother’s last name) and my family name (my father’s last name) in my Canadian IDs. It’s an easy visual reminder that I am from both families and can take the best parts of each and improve on them.

Prime Minister announces additional support for small businesses Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and are vital for our families and communities across the country. They are facing economic hardship and uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic. That is why the Government of Canada is working around the clock to give these businesses the support they need so they can continue to make our country strong at this critical time. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced new measures to support Canadian businesses so they can keep their doors open and their employees on the job. The Government of Canada is: • Expanding the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) to businesses that paid between $20,000 and $1.5 million in total payroll in 2019. This new range will replace the previous one of between $50,000 and $1 million, and will help address the challenges faced by small businesses to cover non-deferrable operating costs. Since the launch of the CEBA on April 9, 2020, more than 195,000 loans have been approved by financial institutions, extending more than $7.5 billion in credit to small businesses. • Announcing its intent to introduce the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) program for small businesses. The program will seek to provide loans, including forgivable loans, to commercial

property owners who in turn will lower or forgo the rent of small businesses for the months of April (retroactive), May, and June. Implementation of the program will require a partnership between the federal government and provincial and territorial governments, which are responsible for property ownertenant relationships. We are working with the provinces and territories to increase rent support for businesses that are most impacted by the pandemic and we will have more details to share soon. These measures are part of the Government of Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan, which has committed more than $107 billion in support to Canadians and businesses facing hardship as a result of the pandemic. The government will continue to monitor and respond to the wide-ranging impacts of COVID-19, and take additional actions as needed to protect the health and safety of Canadians and stabilize the economy.

Quotes “We will always be there to support our Canadian businesses. That is why we are working closely with the business community to make sure that our emergency measures are as effective and inclusive as possible. Expanding the Canada Emergency Business Account and making sure businesses can afford their rent is the smart thing to do. Small businesses are the backbone of our communities, and will keep our economy strong in this uncertain time.” —The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada “We are committed to helping Canadians through this difficult period. By making the Canada Emergency Business Account more accessible and introducing new measures to support businesses, we are positioning them to be ready for the recovery that will come. We will continue to do whatever it takes to ensure that Canadians are supported through the outbreak, and that our economy remains resilient during these challenging times.” —The Hon. Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance

has a quality that makes the most powerful oppressor tremble in fear. Jesus is that truth. Moreover, I would like to highlight what Jesus said in today’s gospel reading. He said: “Even if you do not believe in me, believe the works so that you may realize that the Father is in me and I am in the father.” In his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi, Pope Paul VI had a similar thought: “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” Today, let our words should be seen with our works. DO WHAT YOU SAY. Let us make our actions reflect our words.

FROM A VANTAGE POINT

Tito S.Venida FOUNDING FATHER

Tito S. Venida is a product of the University of the Philippines. He used to be a student-leader during his college days and became one of the founders of the Tau Gamna Phi, one of the world leading Philippineproduced fraternities. His immensurable love for the human race has brought him to the conviction of translating his mission from fraternity into Divinity--from a mere brotherhood into sainthood. Introduction How many of you like to travel? Sometimes, going on trips is exciting, isn’t it? And when most people travel, they do not plan on being gone for long, and even so, when they get to where they are going, the first thing they do is unpack their belongings and find places to put them. When I travel, I do not unpack everything, because why unpack it if you are not sure if you are actually going to use it, right? Besides that, when it’s time to go home, most of my things are already packed and it saves me a lot of time that way. I do not put much focus on short trips because I know I will not be there long enough to make much difference in things. I choose to put most of my focus on where I will be the longest amount of time. That makes sense, doesn’t it? So, no matter how long we might be upon this earth; 50-years, 70-years, or even longer, we aren't going to overly focus on this life because, compared to eternity, this life is no longer than a weekend trip. We started off talking about trips, and since this is Palm Sunday, we should talk about a trip the Lord Jesus once took. It was down the side of a mountain and He made that trip riding on a donkey. He had just left Jericho where he had dinner at Zacchaeus's home, and then left there on His way to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The last part of that trip was his riding the donkey down the path from the Mount of Olives into the city of Jerusalem. And as He rode that donkey down that mountain, His followers lined both sides of the path and put down palm branches and coats in front of Him as a way of celebrating and praising Jesus. But just five short days later, those same people were screaming to have Jesus crucified and killed.

ALBERTA FILIPINO JOURNAL APRIL 2020

THE GREATEST RIDE EVER TO VICTORY Jesus' Triumphal Entry To Jerusalem This trip, called "the Triumphal Entry" demands our undivided attention, because it turned out to be the most expensive trip ever taken and it impacted the world more than any other trip before or since. Jesus knew full well where He was going. He also knew fully what that trip was going to cost Him. But He chose to take it anyway. Let’s find out why. Jesus was going to celebrate Passover, which every Jew did every year. Let’s get into the Word and start reading what the Scripture says about this trip. LUKE 19:29-31 KJV, describes Jesus' Journey to Jerusalem – 29 "And it came to pass, when He was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called Olives, He sent two of His disciples. 30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: lose him, and bring him hither; 31 And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him, Because the Lord hath need of him." CONTINUING IN LUKE 19:3235 KJV; 32 "And they that were sent went their way, and found even as He had said unto them. 33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt? 34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him. 35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon." HE RODE AS THE PRINCE OF PEACE We are seeing here the first glimpses of how God was orchestrating each step of this story. So, He could offer salvation to the world. How did Jesus know there would be a young colt tied up in the town? How in the world could an owner of an expensive animal like the young donkey be okay with letting two strangers come up and walk off with it without questioning them or charging them? And why a donkey instead of a horse or a camel? Actually, there is a clear explanation for each of these questions. First of all, Jesus knew about the donkey because He was also God. Secondly, the two men were influenced by the Holy Spirit to let the donkey go. Thirdly, it had to have been a donkey to show who Jesus was. When a king rode into a town on a horse, it signified that he was their military king, their protector, and that he was ready to go to war with their enemy! However, if the king rode into town on a donkey, it showed him to be a king of peace, one who would focus on their peace and prosperity rather than their military might and power. Jesus rode the donkey because He was the Prince of Peace, who

came to save them, not to kill their enemies. LUKE 19:36-38 KJV "36 As He went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37 When He came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38 “And blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

HE RODE WITH A HEART FOR THE CITY The people celebrated, partly because it was the time of Passover and so it was a very festive mood there in Jerusalem, but also because they were glad they finally had a king who would deal with their Roman enemies. Oh, how they praised and celebrated Him. The Latin meaning of "celebration" means to display joyful feelings of happiness. The Latin meaning of "passion" means to have deep suffering. First, We See Jesus' Love And Compassion. Jesus says, "If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes" (Luke 19:42 KJV). In these words, Jesus reveals the reason for His tears: love and compassion. As He looks upon the crowd with their shouts of joy, He knows they don't get it. They are looking for a King who would lead the Jews in revolution against the Romans and bring freedom, peace and prosperity. And His heart is broken because they had failed to recognize their long awaited Messiah, the One they had prayed for and longed for and His true purpose. So, as He approaches the city, Jesus delivers a Message of Love warning the people of the city: "For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side. And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation" (Luke 19:43-44 KJV). The judgment Jesus was talking about was the destruction of the Temple and the city of Jerusalem that would come 40 years later in 70 AD. The Romans laid siege to the city, built a retaining wall around it so no one could escape and then constructed a ramp of earthen dirt to scale the 39 foot tall wall of the Temple mount. They used a battering ram to knock down the walls and then stormed the city and completely leveled it to the ground as they set it on fire, killing everyone whom

they could not sell into slavery. The people did not listen to Jesus. What’s interesting is that there was another prophet named Zechariah who arrived in the city of Jerusalem in 63 AD and preached for several years the destruction of the Temple and city but still the people did not listen! And so, Jesus weeps over the city because His heart is broken. He offers them spiritual salvation but all they want to do is take physical salvation or freedom into their own hands. What moved Jesus on that day was love and compassion. Second, We See Jesus’ Grief. In both circumstances where Jesus weeps, we see His grief. In the first, it's when He encounters the grief of Mary and Martha and their family and friends over the loss of Lazarus and Jesus is deeply moved. When those close to us hurt, we hurt. And our God hurts. In our text, Jesus looks upon the crowd and experiences this deep sense of loss over what could have been in their lives. They had the Messiah in their midst and they knew Him not nor did they understand Him. Have you been there before? When you grieved over what could have been, if only you had said something different, done something different, or if the circumstances had been different? This passage not only allows us to see Jesus' grief but know that Jesus understands our grief because He has experienced it Himself. Psalm 34:18 KJV says, "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." Our God doesn't stand at a distance, but steps down into our story. God knows our pain, weeps with us and not only suffers with us, but on our behalf. God knows our pain, He knows what a mess our lives are, and He knows how much we need His grace and strength. God grieves over how we often misunderstand His will and purposes, how we are blind to His work in our lives and He grieves over the sin in our lives. Even in our blindness and rebellion, He walks beside us. So, let me ask you a question, "Have you wept over your city?" When you look at your city, do you see only your little secure corner, or do you see the city and its crime, the struggling educational system, the homeless living on the streets, the children who go hungry and those living in poverty. Do you look at the spiritual condition of your city which is reflected in the declining moral fabric as seen in its crime and violence and how people treat one another daily? Do you see the churches closing and the empty pews and weep? As much as I love the city of Everett, Washington, I must admit that it is a broken place. Many of us don't live in the city proper. Instead, we live in the suburbs. Some people

moved here out of the city to escape the problems of violent crimes, prostitution, and drugs. But the problems that once were confined to the city proper are now a part of the suburban communities. And know this, how the city of Everett goes, so goes the suburban communities. Do you weep over your city? As for me, I weep over my city. What caused the people of Israel to go from loving and honoring Jesus to hating Him and wanting Him killed in just five days? They just didn’t understand why He was there in the first place. He had come to offer forgiveness for their sins and to offer Himself as the One who would pay the price for them. They could not understand this. All they seemed to understand is that He turned out not to be their military king, and therefore He was of no use for them. And when the leaders began wanting Him killed, they joined forces with them and yelled, "Crucify Him!" And that day God had anointed to reveal His Son's true nature to mankind. The hatred had to happen so the Cross could happen. And the Cross had to happen so the Resurrection could happen. And through this Blessed Resurrection, God has given His children the knowledge that since Christ could overcome death, we can overcome it, too. Maybe not in the physical sense, but in the spiritual sense. Remember how I opened this message by talking about trips, and I said that compared to eternity, this earthly life is nothing more than a quick weekend trip? That is why we put our focus, our love, and our hope on the eternal rather than the physical. And that is why our eternal life is so much more important than our physical lives. Next Sunday is Easter Sunday; a time when we honor our Lord and what He means to us. It is a holy time. Yet, even for believers, what will most of us be doing? Instead of going to church, most of us will plan nice backyard barbecues and Easter egg hunts, or if we do go to church, it will be to satisfy that twice a year tradition of getting dressed up and going to a church service. And just as quickly as it is over, we forget about it until we start the same process all over again next year. Somehow, I do not think this is what the Lord wants or how He would want us to remember what He did for us. There is an old saying: "Since Jesus was willing to die for us, shouldn’t we be willing to live for Him?" Somehow, I think we would be much better off in every way if we would just pay honest tribute to the Lord Jesus Christ, the King of all kings, and the Lord of all lords. And then to fashion our lives after Him the rest of the year and every year for the rest of our lives. Amen!

THE FALLACY OF THE PAPACY By Tito S. Venida

THE DOCTRINES TO CONSIDER Of the numerous doctrines Roman Catholics must believe under pain of grievous sin, there are two upon which the entire religion is dependent for its continued existence. Without these two foundational doctrines, the Roman Catholic religion comes crashing down to the ground of irrelevancy. In my Catholic childhood, I learned these two doctrines before I could read or write. To the question, “Which is the one true Church founded by Jesus Christ?” I learned, as a little boy, to answer, “The Catholic Church is the one true Church founded by Christ.” To the second question, “And upon what did Jesus found His Church?” my response was, “Jesus founded His Church on the rock of Peter who was the first pope.” When the Lord Jesus saved me at the age of 37, it became obvious very soon thereafter that there is something radically wrong with those two foundational doctrines. WHAT DOES THE SCRIPTURE SAY? And, since the first - the true Church claim - rests squarely on the allegation that Peter was ordained to be its first pope, it is quite appropriate to seek in the Scriptures proof that Jesus really did give Peter such an assignment. There, in the inerrant Word of God, we have every right to expect to find Peter’s appointment clearly set forth, established as a fact beyond a shadow of a doubt. What we do find, though, is what follows. The English word, “pope,” comes from the Latin word, “papa,” which means “father.” But our Lord told His disciples, (and us through them): “And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven." Matthew 23:9 KJV This had to be meant in a spiritual sense since we all have earthly fathers, while our heavenly Father is a spirit to be worshiped in spirit and truth (John 4:24). And based on this admonition from Jesus, there shouldn’t even be a Catholic priesthood much less a papacy, for all Catholic priests are addressed as, “Father.” More on that later. On another occasion, when His disciples were disputing about leadership matters, Our Lord Jesus Christ called them together for a disclosure of His organizational plan. He said, 25 “Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26 But it shall NOT BE SO AMONG YOU: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.” Matthew 20:25-27 KJV From this, it is clear the Lord Jesus was strongly opposed to any “prince” or “princes” exercising dominion over His flock. Historically, it was not until the 3rd century,

nearly 200 years after our Lord’s return to His heavenly throne, that a bishop of Rome – one of hundreds of independent bishops existing at that time – cited Matthew 16:18 as evidence Peter had been appointed bishop of Rome and head of the Church. This was a brazen grab for power by Calixtus I whose interpretation of Matthew 16:18 contradicted that of the leading theologians of his day. That grab for power died an ignominious death when Tertullian, bishop of Carthage, and others, called Calixtus I a “usurper.” From our vantage point 2000 years later, it is unimpeachable proof that Rome lies when it claims the office of the papacy has been in existence from the time of Peter. Remember, if you will, the episode at Caesarea Philippi. There, Jesus asked His Apostles, “Who do YE say that I am?” It was Peter who responded for the twelve with this statement of FACT: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16 KJV And Jesus answered and said unto him, 17 “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, that thou art PETER, and upon this ROCK I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:17, 18 KJV In English, Latin, Aramaic, and other languages the words Peter and rock are entirely different. Unfortunately for Roman Catholics whose beliefs rest heavily on the papacy, Greek is a far more precise language. In Greek, Peter is petros, masculine gender, defined as a small rock, one that can be picked up and skipped across the surface of a pond. It is a derivative of the root word, petra, feminine gender, defined as massive foundation rock. If we insert Greek definitions for petros and petra, what our Lord said in Matthew 16:18 reads like this: “Thou art Little Rock, and upon this Massive Foundation Rock I will build my Church.” To the most respected theologians of the early Church, the Massive Foundation Rock of Matthew 16:18 was not Peter, but Peter’s statement of FACT – “Thou art the Christ, ( Jewish Messiah) the Son of the living God.” That Jesus was and is the Messiah promised in Genesis, that He was and is the Son of God incarnate, are, in fact, the very foundation of Christianity. And that is exactly what was taught in opposition to Calixtus 1 by Cyril, Hilary, Tertullian, Jerome, (producer of the Latin Vulgate Bible), Basil, Ambrose, Augustine, Leo the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, and the muchhonored Greek scholar, Chrysostom. Unfortunately, what the most famous early believers taught is not always considered by the Vatican to be the “Sacred Tradition” on which doctrines are based. For example, the

great Augustine, besides opposing Peter as the Church’s foundation rock, staunchly opposed the doctrine of Mary’s Immaculate Conception which budded in the 5th century. The equally influential Aquinas did the same 800 years later. Hence, as in the Immaculate Conception matter, the Vatican totally disregarded the early theologians’ teachings about Matthew 16:18, even though Christ – as recorded in John’s Gospel – had given Peter the same name of small rock or stone in Aramaic long before the events at Caesarea Philippi. “when Jesus beheld him, (Peter) he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone” (John 1:42). That Matthew 16:18 can in no way be interpreted as an appointment of Peter to be the first pope is even more evident when other Scriptures from both the Old and New Testament are considered. Beginning in Exodus, the Old Testament is full of references to Jesus, the coming Messiah, as the foundation rock of saving faith. He it is who is symbolized by the rocks out of which came fresh water in Exodus 17:6 and Numbers 20:10. Moses, in Deuteronomy 32:4, wrote, “He ( Jesus) is the ROCK.” Rebuking the Nation of Israel in 32:18, he said, “Of the ROCK that begat thee thou art unmindful.” And in 32:31, he said, “…their (the enemy’s) rock is not as our ROCK.” In her prayer for a man child recorded in 1 Samuel 2:2, Hannah says, “… neither is there any ROCK like our God.” And David, just escaped from Saul, in 2 Samuel 22:2 gives credit for his safety this way: “The LORD is my ROCK, and my fortress, and my deliverer.” Clear references to our Lord as the ROCK spoken of throughout the Scriptures, also are found in Psalms 18, 28, 31, 40, 42, 61, 62, 71, 78, 89, 92, 94, and 95. See also Isaiah 8:14, 17:10, and 51:1. In Hebrew, the word for rock is cela, and its definition is “crag, cliff, rock,” definitely not the kind of rock or stone one launches at a squirrel on the bird feeder. In the New Testament, our Lord’s parable of the wise and foolish builders, recorded in Matthew 7 and Luke 6, leaves no doubt that Jesus, not Peter, is the foundation rock on which those who are wise establish their faith. The apostle Paul recognized Christ was the nation of Israel’s rock and the foundation of Christianity as well. “….(they, the Jews) did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual ROCK that followed them: and that ROCK was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4). Earlier, in 1 Corinthians 3:11, the apostle Paul made absolutely certain there would be no mistaking upon whom Christ’s Church was being built. “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” The foregoing cited Scriptures not only don’t support Rome’s claim that Peter was ordained a pope, the first in the Vatican’s alleged unbroken chain of popes, they

actually contradict the claim, and they contradict it most emphatically. Moreover, one comes up “empty” again when trying to find passages that show Peter and the other Apostles, Paul included, were clearly aware of Peter’s election to leadership by Jesus. Nor is it obvious from God’s Word that Peter spent enough time in Rome to have functioned as that city’s first bishop. In his own first epistle, Peter acknowledges a title far different from bishop or pope. Says he, “The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an ELDER” (1 Peter 5:1). Then he says: “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as BEING LORDS over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.” From these words in particular, and from the general tenor of both his letters, one concludes that Peter had no idea he had been ordained the first pope of a Church that did not come into existence until the 5th century. In the account of the Church’s first general council reported in Acts 15, it is James, the brother of Jesus, and not Peter, who provides the solution to the problem under discussion (Cf. Acts 15:13-23). Even before that council, Peter was not acting like the supreme leader of the flock. Rather than directing the actions of others, he was being directed, as the following attests. “Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, THEY SENT unto them Peter and John.” Acts 8:14 KJV It was the same John, who, along with his brother James, had sought from Jesus the promise of sitting one on His right hand, and one on His left in the coming kingdom. This, long after Matthew 16:18 had taken place, and a clear indication that the apostles had no idea Peter had been ordained their leader. There is additional biblical evidence refuting the Vatican’s alleged Petrine papacy to be found in the apostle Paul’s letter to the Roman Churches. At the end of that letter, he salutes 27 named individuals, none of whom is Peter. Why is that if Peter was bishop of Rome? Also, in Acts 23, the apostle Paul not knowing it was the High Priest he was addressing, called him a “whited wall” (Acts 23:3). When informed that his epithet had been directed at the High Priest, Paul was instantly repentant. Said he, “I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of

19

thy people.” But in his letter to the Galatian churches the apostle Paul is openly critical of Peter, saying, “when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed” (Acts 2:11). What Paul said directly to Peter in front of many witnesses was this: “…If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?” Acts 2:14 KJV If Peter had been ordained bishop of Rome and head of the Church, Paul certainly would have been aware of the fact and would not have been openly critical of him in front of others. CONCLUSION Finally, still consulting the Scriptures, we learn that Paul, not Peter, received the Gospel directly from the lips of Jesus. 11 “But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. 12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Galatians 1:11,12 KJV And in 2 Peter 3:16, we get the impression that at least some of what Christ had given to Paul was not known to Peter, for he says that in Paul’s letters “are some things hard to be understood.” Inevitably comes this question, if Jesus made Peter head of the Church, why was Paul the one chosen to receive the Gospel directly from our Lord? The binding and loosing authority the Vatican claims exclusively for its popes was given to all of the Apostles, not just Peter; (Matthew 18:18) and, in fact to all believers when Jesus said, 19 “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven; 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18: 19, 20 KJV When all of the Scriptures having to do with Peter’s alleged ordination as pope are reviewed it becomes manifestly clear that he was only one of twelve chosen men, who will sit on twelve thrones in the millennium, judging the twelve tribes of Israel (Matthew 19:28; Luke 22:30). A bishop of Rome he was not. A pope he was not. And when historical facts are studied, they will positively confirm what has already been seen in the divine Scripture.

ALBERTA FILIPINO JOURNAL APRIL 2020

Quarantine and COVID-19 COVID-19 has been affecting the lives of people around the world. We see the negative effects from lockdowns and on social media, we see xenophobic comments. For me, however, not only is this pandemic giving me a negative effect, it also gives me a positive effect and something to think about. When the quarantine started, all I could think of was being out of school and being in a state of boredom. We are 2-3 weeks in quarantine and I will say that it is one of the most bittersweet events that ever happened in my life. Not being able to go out, go to school and hang out with my friends sucks, but quarantine also gave me a chance to be closer to my family. I do a lot of extra-curricular activities in school and outside of school. I go to piano lessons, cadets, work, improv and rehearsing for the school's musical. I barely had time for my family and we barely ate together because everyone is busy. My parents go off to work and we barely interact with each other because of that. That is why quarantine got me thinking about being able to be with my family now that everybody is home most of the time. We get to watch movies together, eat together, and even play games together. That is why I am planning to be more involved with my family even after this quarantine because being able to be close with

my family is the best feeling in the world. I am planning to give more time to my family. At the end of this pandemic, everyone should realize that everything is important. Every person in our lives is important. Every blessing in our lives is important. We should be thankful of what we have in this moment because we do not know what will happen in the future.

HOROSCOPE

Everyone in the world should take advantage of everything they have because one crisis can ruin or take that away. We should be thankful for our family and friends because one day, we might not be able to see them for a while. We should be thankful of the places we go to, because one day, we might not be able to go. We should be thankful for the activities we do, because one day, we might not be able to do those things. I hope that after this pandemic, we are more thankful for those who are willing to die for the world to be saved, because one day we might not be able to thank them. And lastly, we should be thankful to God, because we might not see that He is working in times like this, but as long as you have faith, you will be saved! “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”(Acts 16:31) Noah and Moses had faith. Therefore, they were saved. Noah and his family believed in God so they were saved from the flood. And then, Moses and his people had faith in God, therefore they were saved from slavery. This is nothing different from what we are experiencing right now, amidst the Coronavirus. As long as we believe in God, we will be saved. "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”(Deuteronomy 31:6)

This could be a rather intense day for you, Libra. Your mind is filled with plots for novels you want to write and ideas for ways to streamline production at work. Don't you have an "pause" switch? You'd benefit from taking some much-needed time off. You'll find that you can quiet your mind simply by sipping some tea and being still for ten minutes.

Today is filled with socializing, with a strong emphasis on the exchange of information. If you're attending a party this evening, Taurus, be receptive to anyone you meet. It's likely that someone new will arrive who will have a significant impact on your life. It might be that he or she tips you off about a professional opportunity at work.

This is one day for you to be as flexible as possible, Scorpio. It may be that you begin with a specific list of items that absolutely must be done, but get distracted by some news from a friend or co-worker. What had seemed so important is no longer so, and your day shifts to accommodate this new piece of information. You'll be rather surprised by but no less satisfied with how the day turns out.

You might want to make an extra effort to tidy up the house this morning, Gemini. It's likely that you'll have some unexpected guests. Some neighbors could drop by unannounced, or an old friend could call from her car and say she's on her way over. Take it all in stride.

You can overcome the intensity of today's planetary energies by making a conscious effort stay positive, Sagittarius. Distract yourself with necessary household chores and errands. Don't forget to take some time out for fun, too. As you work around the house, stop to indulge yourself every few hours. A cup of hot chocolate or a chat on the phone will add a welcome grace note to the day.

Don't take any information you receive today at face value, Capricorn. Technical glitches will likely plague you throughout the day. Your bank statement could be incomprehensible. Bills could show up with an extra zero tacked on. Don't panic. Make some phone calls and get all the facts. Whatever you do, don't let this ruin your day. Everything will get sorted out.

You work hard to reach your goal of financial independence, Leo. All signs indicate that you're well on your way. Today you could receive some news that makes you realize you aren't there yet. Perhaps a relative calls to say you're no longer his/her sole beneficiary. Maybe your investment statement shows a poor return. This isn't what you expected, but you're still on the right track. It just might take a bit longer to reach your destination.

Don't take anything you read or hear today at face value, Aquarius. It's possible that you'll receive some rather distressing news, but before you react in frustration, read the fine print. The news may not really be so bad. In fact, it may not even be true! Take a deep breath and heave a sigh of relief, then get back to your normal routine.

You're bound to be busy but happy today, Virgo. You'll likely spend the morning doing chores and generally puttering around the house. Don't be surprised if a friend drops by unexpectedly in the afternoon with some important news to share. Your evening could be occupied doing research at the library or on the computer. It seems your friend's news piqued your curiosity about a particular subject.

It's likely that you'll receive some unpleasant news today, Pisces. Perhaps there are changes occurring at work that you read about in the morning newspaper. Or it could be that you get a phone call and receive some upsetting news about an old friend. You'll need to take the information in stride and not let it ruin your day. With the intensity of the planetary energies at play, you're at risk of overreacting.

This could be a day of technical glitches and malfunctions, Aries. It's frustrating, to be sure, but a little bit funny, too. Everything you touch, from computer to washing machine, seems to groan and shudder before finally breaking. Apparently, today you have the opposite of the Midas touch. Don't take it personally.

You'll have to let go of your usual drill-sergeant manner and simply let the day unfold as it will. Try as you might, even you won't be able to direct events today, Cancer. You could find your attention diverted from one project to another. It isn't an unpleasant day but a disjointed one. Stay open to all possibilities. You could be surprised by the way things turn out.

`Smile’, says PBSA head as they face Covid 19 crisis, call for financial relief By Moses Billacura

“Smile, the world needs it more now”. Those were the words of Bayani Alcantara, president of the Philippine Business Society of Alberta (PBSA) after a Zoom Meeting, April 4, with members and guest speakers MLA Jordan Walker, MPs James Cumming and Kelly McCauley and Councilor Mike Nickel. “We can overcome this challenge,” said Alcantara, owner of Panciteria de Manila Restaurant. The PBSA head and other small business owners were raising questions with regards to various concerns amid the Covid 19 pandemic which has hit their operations. The guest speakers cited government programs in place to help business owners. Lixmilla Serrano, owner of 3J Variety Store, said they are having difficulties get the needed help from Business Development Bank of Canada because of the strict restrictions. The government bank offers loans of up to $100,000 for businesses which can be repaid over five years. Debtors can postpone capital payment for the first six months. To be eligible, the business must be based in Canada and have been generating revenues for at least two years.

Serrano, however, pointed out that small business owners have not been doing well since 2015 because of the recession and so they will try to approach private banks to help them get the needed funds to continue their operations. Lawyer Joseph Angeles of Angeles Law said business owners have been using their available cash and wanted to see provincial and federal government actions that would will make small businesses keep cash in their pockets. “We’re burning through our cash which can be good for two months,” said Angeles. MLA Walker said that government cannot solve the Covid 19 crisis on its own and called on everyone to harness the power of civil society. Realtor Loida Lumanlan said that there are still cheques coming in for April but after that there will be no more revenue for a self-employed like her. Walker replied that the Alberta government website has resources but will address the issues raised by the Filipino business owners after checking with key provincial officials directly involved in working on reliefs.

Medicus Health Clinic, Pharmacy open telephone appointments By Moses Billacura

Doctors and pharmacists at the Medicus Family Health Clinic and Pharmacy have kept their telephone lines open to their patients. Medicus clinic manager Joyce Samonte said that their patients can still reach out to their physicians by calling them at (780)757-7713.

"We are currently doing telephone appointments," she said. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, patients who either have fever, cough or difficulty breathing are advised not to proceed to the reception's desk, and instead, to go home and call Health Link 811 for assessment. Patients, however, who needed prescriptions refilled can call Medicus

to have their medicines prepared for pick up. "This is our request to our patients if they need their meds. Call us first and we'll ready everything for them for pick up," Samonte said. Medicus Family Health Clinic and Pharmacy, the clinic known for its "malasakit", is a Filipino coowned clinic established in 2017.
