STAY IN YOUR LANE

Starting a hair loss business is like hitting the open road with big dreams. My first step? Make a plan, map it out, and count the cost. It's critical to avoid stalling mid-journey, so l assess needs, research markets, and budget for equipment. Ensuring my plan is realistic about what it will take — time, effort, and investment — keeps me driving toward success, not stranded.

The road is busy, and it's easy to fume at other drivers. Don't get upset with other drivers on the road. I remind myself that they also have somewhere they're trying to get. Patience turns the trip into something I can enjoy. When an impatient driver — be it a skeptic, a naysayer, or even the competition — zooms by, I let them go. Keeping my attitude positive avoids regret and trouble. Anger only slows me down, but a steady pace, fueled by optimism, helps me serve clients better and build my business.

But what kind of driver am I? Distracted by trends, tired from long hours, or overwhelmed by choices? Sometimes, I feel lost. That's when I pull over and ask for directions. The American Hair Loss Conference is a pit stop of wisdom, with experts and peers ready to guide me. Admitting I need help isn't failure. It's smart business, connecting me with resources to keep thriving.

Sometimes, I need to get off the expressway and take the scenic route. Slowing down, resting, and recalculating recharges me. A break to strategize or learn at a conference workshop reminds me to savor progress, like securing new clients or refining services. Rushing blinds me to the joy of building something lasting. Confucius said, "He who chases two rabbits catches none". Running a hair loss business taught me to choose my path and stick to my lane. At the American Hair Loss Conference, I found my map, my team, and my pace. So, decide where you're headed, plan wisely, and drive on. Your business journey is worth it.

We'll see you in September!

"One of the most rewarding parts of attending the American Hair Loss Conference is seeing familiar faces and making new connections."

Over the years, I’ve interacted with many sales associates and professionals in the industry — whether through phone calls, emails, or social media — without ever meeting them in person. This conference gives me the chance to finally put names to faces. There’s something special about chatting in an elevator with someone you’ve only read about in industry publications or recognizing someone you’ve followed on social media. It reminds you that we’re all working toward the same goal: improving the lives of those affected by hair loss.

Another powerful reminder from attending the conference is the importance of welcoming newcomers to the industry. As professionals, it’s easy to forget that we were all once in their shoes — unsure of how to navigate this complex field. I have had the chance to meet several first-time attendees, and it took me back to my own early days, when someone took the time to help me find my way.

The key takeaway is the reminder to let go of the urge to handle everything myself. It’s important to stay in my lane and focus on what I do best. Trying to be all things to all people can dilute your impact. Instead, surrounding yourself with a team of professionals who excel in areas where you may not allows you to work more efficiently and effectively. By focusing on my strengths, I can ensure that I’m providing the best possible care and solutions to my clients, while relying on others to do the same in their expertise.

Trying to handle everything and being all things to all people only dilutes my impact, so I focus on what I do best, customer service, delivering top-notch care and support. I surround myself with professionals who excel where I don't, like trichologists and hairstylists, to fill gaps in expertise. By honing my strengths, I work efficiently and effectively, ensuring my clients get the best possible service and solutions.

Finding New Hair Replacement Clients

Project Hair Co, Novi,

Starting a new hair replacement salon without a full book of clients can be intimidating. It was for Project Hair Co! Back in 2022, Project Hair Co spread its wings and just three years later we are so busy that we are looking at adding in a third stylist. How did we go from zero to fully booked?

An Eye-catching Website

Our website, www.projecthairco. com, was self-created on GoDaddy. The website builder is easy to use and easily customizable.

Social Media Accounts

Before creating Project Hair Co, the founder didn’t even have an Instagram! We had to learn how to use all social media platforms, hashtags, keywords, and content creation. Video editing, consistent posts with local hashtags, and content ideas became a second job!

Website Optimization

This is a service GoDaddy, our website platform, did for us and it was worth every penny! They use back channels to connect your website to reputable websites so that you gain clout on the search engines. New clients started flooding in after doing this! The absolute most valuable action we have taken is making fun and informative videos for our social media. We get our ideas by

watching other hairstylists’ videos and recreating them to fit hair replacement. Also, when we have challenges with clients, we turn those into opportunities to make a video on topics to help manage client expectations before they even get to our chair. We create content based around what our clients tell us is their favorite part of the service or how life-changing it has been for them.

In addition to videos, we post our Google reviews on social media. We have found those posts are just what some clients need to pull the trigger and get hair. They see the words of others that absolutely love the result.

We have no viral social media accounts, nor do we do any paid ads, but still, we are so busy. We get around five new consultations per week, and they just keep coming!

It has always been difficult to get clients to go on camera due to wanting to protect their privacy. We have gathered model clients by putting a section on our website for a Model Call. We provide the hair and do the first cut-in at no charge in exchange for video and photo content for our social media. We have been so surprised how many clients are more than willing to do footage! For one of our most comfortable clients that is great on camera, we continue to give discounts at each cut-in

because the videos are so valuable in bringing in new clients.

Sometimes when doing a consultation, someone will be on the fence due to price. We offer the model deal then, and many are willing to give footage for a discount.

Even if their face is covered, it is still valuable footage that brings in many new clients.

We printed out our QR code that takes clients right to our Google review page and put it right next to the mirror in our suites. We have a goal of 100 5-star reviews, and we are in our way there - currently at 37!

Due to making sure our website has our searchable keywords in headings and text, people normally find us in Google search. Clients are coming to us from 2-4 hours away. The value of a solid website and social media accounts has helped us to have a steady flow of clients.

Buying And Selling Unconventionally

When people think about buying or selling a salon, they often imagine formal contracts, real estate negotiations, and business brokers. But our story didn’t follow that script. We didn’t go through a corporate handoff or a rigid retirement plan. Instead, we built something slowly; based on mentorship, shared values, mutual respect, and a deep desire to help others — especially those experiencing hair loss.

What began as a simple conversation between two stylists evolved into a unique transition rooted in trust and purpose. In telling our story together, we hope to offer a different perspective on what it means to grow, evolve, and eventually pass the torch in this industry. This wasn’t just about transferring ownership, it was about continuing a mission and preserving a legacy.

A Journey of Mentorship and Trust

as told by Katy Lovan

I first met Jack Morlan in June 2015. At the time, I was considering leaving the traditional salon setting to become an independent stylist — an exciting but intimidating leap. A coworker of mine

happened to be in touch with Jack and passed along his number. I didn’t know it then, but that phone call would mark the beginning of a transformative journey, not only for my career but also for a mentorship that would shape the way I do business.

The transition was anything but smooth. Just five days after giving my two weeks' notice at my thensalon, I was unexpectedly let go. I was heartbroken. Other stylists before me had been supported and celebrated for branching out on their own, but I was left with no income and no plan. As a single mom, I couldn’t afford even one week without pay.

Jack, however, stepped in without hesitation. Rather than making me wait to start at the new salon location as originally planned, he offered me a spot at his existing salon so I could continue working immediately. That gesture, one of compassion and flexibility, was my first real glimpse into the kind of person and professional Jack is.

He helped me with every detail of becoming independent: who to go to, what to do, and how to set up my business. I remained under his wing through the transition when he sold the salon rental side to Jenna, and even picked up part-time work at his other salon located inside Edgewater Retirement Community to cover for a team member on maternity leave.

After a few years, I relocated about three hours away but continued working every other weekend at Jenna’s salon. I spent countless hours on the road, juggling family, career, and figuring out where I wanted to plant roots. In 2019, I moved back home and decided to open a salon with my cousin. Although I had owned a restaurant

previously, opening a salon was a completely different world and once again, I turned to Jack for guidance.

My cousin and I were optimistic about our location, situated in a revitalizing area of Des Moines. Unfortunately, the challenges soon outweighed the promise: endless construction delays, a landlord who harassed us daily, and a building that quite literally began to fall apart. Despite the struggles, our salon thrived, thanks to sheer will and hard work. Throughout that time, I continued working two days a week at Edgewater, drawn back by the joy of making people feel good and the sense of purpose that always lingered in my heart.

Eventually, my cousin and I parted ways with the salon, and I found myself once again unsure of my next step. I met with Jack, this time with a clear goal: I wanted to transition from traditional salon services to alternative hair solutions. I had always felt a calling to help others in a more meaningful way, and the world of wigs and hair loss solutions sparked that passion.

That conversation turned into something bigger. Jack mentioned the possibility of retiring, something he’d talked about for years and the idea of me purchasing Studio 409 was born. We took an unconventional approach to the transition. Rather than a traditional sale, Jack and I agreed on a monthly payment plan while I worked toward securing a down payment through a bank. During this time, I gradually took on more responsibilities, stepping into the role of manager while Jack moved into a part-time position. We also expanded our team by welcoming Taylor and Tricia, two incredible additions who helped us begin shaping the next chapter of Studio 409 Hair Loss Clinic.

It wasn’t a typical business transaction, but it was built on years of trust, hard work, and mentorship. Jack never held back his knowledge. He mentored me through every phase of my career, from my first uncertain steps as an independent stylist to owning a full-service clinic dedicated to hair loss solutions.

On September 1, 2024, I officially became the new owner of Studio 409. Just two weeks later, we were in Dallas at the AHLC convention, an unforgettable experience where I was introduced to so many of the incredible companies Jack had worked with over the years. That weekend was more than just a convention, it was a launchpad for what’s next.

This journey has been unconventional, yes, but also deeply rewarding. I’m proud to continue Jack’s legacy with a modern twist, bringing education, compassion, and innovation to those struggling with hair loss. Most of all, I’m grateful for the mentorship that made it all possible. Jack gave me the tools, the trust, and the belief that I could do this, and now, I’m doing it.

Buying and Selling A Salon Unconventionally

When I started my hair salon business 50 years ago, it was just to do basic hair services: cutting, coloring, and perming, not thinking at all about hair additions like wigs, toppers, or anything to do with hair loss.

After 10 years of doing traditional services, my sister Jo, who was a nurse, came to the salon and told me she had been diagnosed with cancer. She said I needed to offer something for those losing their hair. I told her I only wanted to do hair, not wigs, and she said she'd bring all four of our sisters in to convince me otherwise. I said I didn’t need everyone ganging up on me like they did on the farm growing up!

Still, I agreed to do some research. After attending a week of intensive training in Florida on cutting, fitting, styling, and altering wigs, I committed to offering these services to clients in Des Moines.

That decision turned into something much larger. I began teaching the Look Good, Feel Better program for cancer clients, which led to over 40 years of building a salon known in the medical community as the place to go after a diagnosis. I was even invited to speak at a cancer conference for doctors and nurses, which opened more doors for the business.

From there, I started hiring and training stylists who wanted to be part of this specialized service. We expanded offerings to help men and women with medical and natural hair loss, and the business grew into something truly meaningful.

As retirement neared, I looked at my staff. I had worked with Katy in various settings over the years and respected her deeply, but I didn’t immediately approach her about buying the business. I had a few others inquire, and one even got to the finish line before backing out. None of them felt like the right fit.

Eventually, I approached Katy and asked if she would be interested in taking over Studio 409. and we began discussing options. I believed in her talent, her vision, and her drive and I promised to stay on and support her until she was comfortable leading on her own.

Because we had worked together for over a decade, I felt confident in offering her a non-traditional deal: a specific contract with monthly payments until she could secure bank financing. It worked because there was mutual trust.

Now, watching her lead our team has been a joy. Katy has honored what we built while adding her own vision and energy. She’s ready, and the future of Studio 409 is in great hands.

Looking back, we both agree: this was never just a business transaction. It was a passing of the baton from one chapter to the next, grounded in care and community. We didn’t follow a traditional path, but that’s exactly what made the process so meaningful. Through every conversation, every learning moment, and every step of this transition, we leaned on trust rather than titles, and purpose over paperwork.

We share this story with the AHLC community because we believe that mentorship matters. That relationships — when nurtured over time — can lead to powerful, unconventional outcomes. And that the future of this industry doesn’t have to look like the past. With a shared vision, it can look even better.

Grow Local First

Why Your Personal Facebook Profile Is Your Strongest Salon Marketing Tool

In today's crowded social media landscape, many platforms promise visibility, but few deliver real, local business growth like Facebook. While TikTok might go viral and Instagram might look glossy, Facebook is unmatched in its ability to build organic, community-driven relationships, especially for service-based professionals like hairdressers. And here's the secret: it all starts with your personal Facebook profile. Before you create a Business Page or launch a Group, your personal profile is the most powerful marketing tool at your disposal. It's where real people connect, trust is built,

and referrals happen naturally. If you're not leveraging your personal profile first, you're skipping the most important step in growing your salon organically.

Your Personal Profile: The Digital Front Window

Think of your personal profile as the storefront of your digital salon. If the shades are drawn — if you're not posting, not connecting — then people can't see the vibrant, talented professional inside. You may be open for business, but to the digital world, it looks like you're closed. Today, your personal profile is where most people 'meet' you first, long before booking an

appointment. It lets them get to know your personality, values, and style in a natural, authentic way.

Why Facebook — Not TikTok or Instagram?

While other platforms emphasize entertainment or aesthetics, Facebook excels at building relationships within your real-life network. Unlike Instagram's curated visuals or TikTok's short-form trends, Facebook is built for connection. Friend requests, mutual friends, and location-based recommendations help you tap into your community. It's designed to foster trust, which is essential for local service businesses. And trust, not trends, is what brings clients into your chair.

The renowned European brand is now available in the US. From scalp assessments to treatment protocols to home-use products, we provide everything you need to operate a successful hair restoration business.

The Friend Request – The New Word-of-Mouth

One of Facebook's biggest advantages is the friend request system. It's an active, intentional way to grow your network. You're not just hoping someone finds your page — you're building a digital version of your real-world reputation. When you send or accept friend requests from clients, neighbors, and locals, you're expanding your visibility within your geographic community. People want to book with someone they know, or someone their friend knows. That's the power of Facebook.

Authentic Engagement Over Salesy Posts

The best-performing content isn't promotional — it's personal. Instead of constantly posting "Book now!" or "20% off highlights!", focus on sparking real conversations. Try posts like:

• How's everyone doing this week?

• What's one self-care thing you're doing for yourself this month?

• What's the best meal you've had in town recently?

These open-ended, conversational posts invite comments. And when people reply, you must respond to every single comment. Not only does this build connection — it tells Facebook's algorithm that your post is valuable, which increases its visibility to others.

The 4:1 Rule: Share Life, Then Business

You might worry about mixing your personal life with business, but that's exactly what creates authentic engagement. Use the 4:1 ratio: for every one business post, share four personal updates. Not sure what

to post? Think about these five relatable themes:

• Friends - celebrate connections, shout out clients, tag collaborators.

• Family - share milestones or moments (as you're comfortable).

• Faith - whether spiritual or values-driven, speak from your foundation.

email sequences. On Facebook, the funnel is simple: talk to people. When someone comments on your post, it's a warm lead. They're interested. They're listening. That comment might be the start of a booking, a referral, or a long-term client relationship. So treat it like gold. Always respond. Answer every question. React to every comment. Ask follow-up questions. Facebook's algorithm rewards interaction. The more engagement you generate, the more people Facebook shows your posts to. It's that simple. Consistency + conversation = visibility.

When to Add a Business Page or Group

Once you've cultivated a strong, engaged audience through your personal profile, then it's time to expand with a Business Page for online booking, reviews, business hours, and potential ads and a Group for loyal clients, VIP offers, tutorials, or event promotions.

These tools work best when you already have momentum. They're not the starting point-they're the next level.

Be Human First, Stylist Second

• Fun - hobbies, vacations, music, books, weekend plans.

• Finance - tips on budgeting beauty services, affordable style, or even entrepreneurial insights.

These themes help people see you as a whole person — not just a stylist — and that relatability builds trust.

Conversations Are the New Marketing Funnel

In traditional marketing, funnels are complicated: ads, clicks, landing pages,

At the heart of your salon business is you. Not just your technique, but your energy, your kindness, your story. Facebook gives you the perfect platform to showcase all of that — not through ads, but through authentic connection. Before you create a logo, run a special, or build a group, look at your personal profile. Is it active? Is it welcoming? Is it visible? Pull back the curtains. Post with purpose. Engage with heart. Your next client isn't looking for a brand — they're looking for a person they can trust with their hair and their time. Let them find you.

Drug-Free Hair Regrowth Options After Chemotherapy

Cancer survivors often face a deeply personal and emotional aftermath once treatment ends. Amid the triumph of remission lies a quieter struggle: reclaiming one's body, identity, and confidence. For many, hair loss becomes a daily reminder of what they’ve endured — and a symbol of everything they’ve lost. Healing hair after chemo doesn’t require more drugs or invasive procedures. There are gentler, drug-free paths to support post-chemo hair recovery — rooted in science, nature, and ancient wisdom.

wavelengths penetrate the scalp without any pain or heat and are absorbed by the mitochondria within follicle cells, increasing ATP (cellular energy) production, boosting blood circulation, and triggering the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle.

Why It Works

• Non-invasive and completely drug-free — ideal for bodies already overwhelmed by medication

• Clinically proven to improve hair density, strength, and thickness in both men and women

• Stimulates oxygen and nutrient delivery to follicles, reviving their function post-chemo

are already managing a complex regimen of follow-up medications, and the idea of adding finasteride, minoxidil, or hormone-based solutions feels both risky and exhausting.

LLLT offers an empowering, non-toxic path forward. It doesn’t interfere with other medications, has no systemic side effects, and can be seamlessly integrated into a post-chemo wellness plan.

Now, let's take a moment to clear any confusion. It is important to understand that cold caps and LLLT serve two very different purposes in cancer care.

Let’s dive into a non-invasive, drug-free plan to support post-chemo hair recovery: Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), nutraceutical support, and Ayurvedic scalp massage.

Supporting Hair Recovery with Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

After months or years of aggressive treatments, many survivors are left with weakened, dormant, or miniaturized hair follicles. The scalp may feel tender, dry, and uneven in hair density. That’s where Low-Level Laser Therapy comes in.

LLLT uses low-energy red light (typically 630–660 nm) to gently stimulate the hair follicles at a cellular level. These

• Easy to use at home with FDA-cleared devices like laser caps, helmets, or combs

How It’s Used

Patients are typically advised to use LLLT devices daily for 6 minutes per session. Most users start noticing improvements in hair texture within 2–3 months, with more visible regrowth by the fourth month.

While results vary based on the degree of follicle damage, LLLT is most effective when follicles are still viable, even if they’ve been dormant for months, which is exactly what happens during chemo-therapy. The appeal is clear: survivors want safe, supportive therapies — not more pills. Most

Cold caps are used before and during chemotherapy to prevent hair loss. Cold caps are worn before and during chemotherapy infusions. These tightly fitted helmets use extreme cold to constrict blood vessels in the scalp, reducing blood flow and minimizing the amount of chemotherapy drugs that reach the hair follicles. This protective method aims to reduce hair loss before it begins.

While cold caps can help some patients retain 50–70% of their hair, they come with limitations. The treatment must be used with every chemo session, requires frequent cap changes (every 20–30 minutes), and can be physically uncomfortable due to the prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures. It’s also not effective for all chemotherapy types.

LLLT is used after chemotherapy to stimulate regrowth. Once treatment ends and the body begins to heal, LLLT becomes an invaluable tool. Unlike cold caps, LLLT is not about preventing loss — it’s about rebuilding.

Supporting Hair Recovery with Nutraceuticals

After chemotherapy, the body’s nutritional reserves are often depleted, and so is its ability to synthesize keratin, collagen, and elastin — key building blocks for hair. So, in addition to LLLT, this is where targeted, hair-focused nutraceuticals can be transformative.

Nutraceuticals are supplements made from natural ingredients that deliver therapeutic doses of vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds. For hair recovery, key ingredients include:

• Amino acids, folic acids & essential vitamins to support hair follicle strength

• Zinc, iron, selenium, and B-complex vitamins for cellular metabolism and immune repair

• Ayurvedic herbs - ashwagandha, brahmi, bhrinaraj, neem, and turmeric to reduce inflammation, improve hair health, calm stress response and boost immunity, block DHT, and promote hormonal balance.

When taken consistently, these supplements help replenish the body's reserves, reduce inflammation, and create an internal environment that supports healthy, resilient hair growth.

Supporting Hair Recovery with Scalp Massage Using Ayurvedic Hair Oil

Sometimes the most powerful healing is the simplest. In Ayurvedic tradition, scalp massage is more than cosmetic — it’s medicinal. And for chemo survivors, it offers a nurturing, restorative ritual to reconnect with the body.

What Is Ayurvedic Hair Oil?

Ayurvedic hair oil is a blend of nourishing plant oils infused with healing herbs used in Ayurveda, India’s 5,000-year-old system of natural medicine. These oils are slowinfused with botanicals like bhringraj, amla, brahmi, neem, tulsi, and rosemary, known for cooling inflammation, revitalizing follicles, and supporting the scalp’s natural balance. Unlike synthetic treatments, they work with your body’s rhythms to heal from the root.

Why It Works Post-Chemo

Chemotherapy often leaves the scalp dry, inflamed, and with poor circulation. Gently massaging Ayurvedic oils into the scalp 2–3 times per week can:

• Boost circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to dormant follicles

• Soothe inflammation and sensitivity with herbal anti-inflammatory compounds

• Hydrate and restore the scalp barrier, easing flakiness and tightness

• Calm the nervous system, reducing anxiety, insomnia, and emotional trauma

How to Create a Post-Chemo Hair Recovery Program in Your Salon

As a salon owner, offering a structured, evidence-based recovery plan shows your clients you care and gives them tools to take control of their healing. Here’s a sample protocol:

In-Salon - Weekly Visits for Three Months

• 15-Minute Ayurvedic Scalp Massage: Use herbal oils to stimulate blood flow, hydrate, and soothe the scalp

• 30-Minute LLLT Session: Follow with targeted red light therapy to activate follicles

• Supplement Guidance: Recommend trusted, drug-free nutraceuticals to support regrowth from within

At-Home Care - Daily Routine for Three Months

• 6-Minute Daily LLLT Device Use: Provide laser cap rentals or suggest reputable brands

• Hair-Supporting Nutraceuticals: Offer or recommend a quality supplement plan

• Massage Oil for Scalp Care: Provide clients with oil and a guide for gentle, self-administered massage

The post-chemo journey is delicate. The body is rebuilding. The soul is catching up. It’s not the time to bombard the system with more chemicals or surgical interventions.

With the right tools - LLLT, Ayurvedic Scalp Therapy and nutritional support, you can help cancer survivors not just regrow their hair, but also restore their confidence, emotional wellbeing, and sense of self. Hair is more than appearance — it’s identity, strength, and hope. As a salon owner, you have the unique opportunity to help survivors reclaim all three.

10 HR Mistakes that Can Cost Your Company Money

My

Navigating employment law is a serious responsibility for business owners. From hiring and wages to workplace safety and harassment, business owners must navigate complex federal and state laws to protect both their employees and their business. Federal labor laws apply to an employer based on its total number of employees.

This article raises awareness of key employment laws that every business owner should know.

1. Stay educated on employment laws

has its own set of regulations concerning pay frequency and how employees must be paid. For example, some states allow employers to pay employees through direct deposit, as long as the employee has a means of withdrawing the full amount on pay day.

Employees fall under two FLSA categories: non-exempt and exempt. There are extensive requirements for correctly classifying employees.

certain criteria and earn a minimum salary of at least $684 per week. They typically receive an annual salary that doesn't change based on the number of hours worked. Common mistakes to avoid:

• Don’t make deductions from pay for poor performance, missing partial days of work or working less than 40 hours.

3. Don’t pay someone as an independent contractor who should be an employee

There are more than 180 federal laws that govern workplace activities. These laws are primarily enforced by the U.S. Department of Labor and are complicated! They regulate wages, non-compete agreements, discrimination, medical and military leaves, benefits, background checks, and many other employee rights. In addition, states, counties and municipalities may have local laws. Know which laws apply to your business.

2. Pay wages in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

The FLSA has specific regulations for paying wages. In addition, each state

Non-exempt employees are paid an hourly rate for all hours worked. They receive overtime pay (regular hourly rate plus 50 percent) for all hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Common mistakes to avoid:

• Overtime must be paid even if the employer didn’t authorize the extra hours.

• Don’t allow “off-the-clock” work. Require employees to report all hours they work. If an employee is clocked out for lunch, they should be fully relieved of work duties and not do any work.

Exempt status under the FLSA refers to employees who are not entitled to overtime pay and the hourly minimum wage. To qualify as exempt, employees must meet

An independent contractor is a person who provides services to another entity under a contract, but is not considered an employee. They typically have more control over how and when they work, and are responsible for their own taxes and expenses. Both the Department of Labor and the IRS scrutinize independent contractor status.

4. Train supervisors on basic employment law

A supervisor is your first line of defense against employment law claims. Your supervisors don’t need to be experts, but they do need to be educated on their role in preventing and reporting potential problems and violations. A good training program should include topics such as harassment, discrimination, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), workers’ compensation, wage and hour laws, leaves of absence laws, hiring laws, OSHA, etc.

5. Follow up on employee complaints and concerns of uncivil behavior

If you become aware of potential harassment, discrimination, disability, bullying, etc., follow up and take quick, appropriate action. Conduct a thorough investigation and keep records documenting findings and actions taken. It is best to have a neutral third party conduct the investigation.

6. Handle work-related injuries promptly and compassionately

Carry workers’ compensation (WC) insurance and follow your WC companies’ instructions for reporting and handling injuries. Don’t treat the employee negatively because they had an injury. If so, you could have a discrimination claim on top of the workers’ comp claim.

7.

Maintain I-9 Forms for all employees

Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification is a U.S. government form used to verify the identity and legal authorization to work of all paid employees in the United States. It must be completed correctly.

The employee presents their employer with acceptable documents as evidence of identity and employment authorization. The I-9 form includes a list of documents the employee can present. The employer cannot dictate specifically what documents the

employee chooses to use. The employee must present this documentation within their first three days of employment or they aren’t allowed to continue working until they present documentation.

8. Display current labor law posters

Both the federal and state governments require employers to display information on laws such as minimum wage, workers' compensation, genetic information privacy, rights to unionize, medical leaves, and more. This information can change so an employer should review the requirements regularly. There are options for digitally posting the information for employers who don’t have a central location or have remote workers.

9. Treat pregnant and breastfeeding employees fairly

There are a number of laws protecting the rights of pregnant and new mothers including the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, Americans with Disabilities Act and the PUMP Act - Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers Act. Some states have additional laws. For example, Kansas has a law requiring accommodation and job re-instatement that applies to employers with as few as four employees.

In addition, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows eligible

employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for specific family and medical reasons, such as caring for a newborn, the employee’s own medical condition or a seriously ill family member. It ensures that employees can return to their same or equivalent job after their leave. FMLA applies to companies with 50 or more employees within a 75-mile radius.

10. Comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

The ADA applies to employers with 15 or more employees and makes it unlawful to discriminate in employment against a qualified individual with a disability. One of the ADA’s most important aspects is its requirement for employers to provide “reasonable accommodations” to employees with disabilities. A reasonable accommodation is any change or adjustment to a job or work environment that enables the employee to perform essential job functions. It’s important to note that the definition of disability under the ADA is broad. Examples of disabilities include chronic illnesses like epilepsy or diabetes, migraine, sleep disorders, back issues and depression and anxiety disorders. Even temporary impairments, depending on their severity, can sometimes be covered.

The Heart of Our Industry

Why We Must Support Trusted Manufacturers

In the world of hair replacement, relationships are the foundation of everything we do. Behind every transformation and every client’s renewed confidence stands a network of dedicated professionals — artists, educators, coaches, salon owners, and manufacturers. Among these, the manufacturers who provide the very alternative hair we use are not just vendors — they are partners in our

success. For years, they have stood by us, offering not only exceptional products but also the education, consistency, and support we need to deliver life-changing results.

These trusted manufacturers are the invisible backbone of our industry. They help us build businesses rooted in quality and confidence. They ensure that the alternative hair we source is ethically obtained, handled with care, and held to the highest standards. And

they help us grow by providing technical education and guidance that empowers us as artists. Yet today, in a marketplace driven by convenience and price wars, we are watching a concerning shift unfold.

Overseas suppliers are flooding the industry, promising low prices, fast shipping, and flashy deals. But behind the curtain, what are we really getting? Too often, these suppliers operate anonymously, using professional artists’ reviews and images — sometimes without permission — to mislead buyers. They lack transparency, accountability, and ethics. They show

up quickly and vanish just as fast, leaving professionals stranded when something goes wrong.

And things do go wrong.

When you buy from an unverified overseas supplier and there’s a problem — whether it’s poor quality, mismatched colors, damaged alternative hair, or a delay in shipping — you’re often left with no one to call and no path to resolution. That $100 you thought you saved? It quickly disappears in wasted time, replacements, refunds, and lost trust.

Compare that to the experience of working with a reputable manufacturer: They stand behind their product. If there’s an issue, they help you resolve it. When you need support, they offer it. And when you have questions, you get real answers, not automated messages or email chains that go nowhere. That extra investment in product cost is actually an investment in your peace of mind and long-term success.

As artists, we also have to consider longevity. With proper technique, application, and care, alternative hair from trusted manufacturers can last significantly longer compared to lower-quality alternatives. This is where education becomes vital.

salon creativity — is the key to staying relevant and growing in today’s evolving beauty industry.

If you’re only focused on one side, you miss out. Today’s most successful artists are those who are fluent in both traditional salon services and hair loss solutions. They understand how to cut, color, and style both natural and alternative hair. They know how to build sustainable revenue streams from recurring services. And they are not afraid to ask for help, lean into new techniques, and keep learning.

our work so powerful.

And let’s not forget the ethical side. One of the most critical concerns with these “pop-up” suppliers is that we have no visibility into how their hair is sourced. Was the donor treated ethically? Were they paid fairly? Were the working conditions safe? Were children exploited in the process?

If we don’t know the answer, we risk being complicit. When we support reputable manufacturers, we support an ethical supply chain — one that aligns with our values, honors the people behind the product, and respects the integrity of our industry.

When your salon team is trained in how to correctly apply and maintain alternative hair, and when your clients are educated in how to care for it, the product becomes far more cost-effective over time. Longevity isn’t just about product quality; it’s about professional skill, technique, and ongoing support.

This brings us to another critical element of success in this field: education.

While trusted manufacturers offer invaluable product education, it’s equally important to seek out independent education that helps you advance as an artist. Investing in coaching, mentorship, and programs that blend the best of both worlds — alternative hair and mainstream

Education helps you not only serve your clients better; it helps you operate your business more strategically. You learn pricing, consultation skills, retention strategies, and techniques that make alternative hair last longer and clients come back more often. Working with a coach or educator gives you a fresh perspective, confidence, and clarity — something no product alone can provide.

Still, at the core of all this is trust.

Our industry is built on relationships. Clients trust artists. Artists trust educators and manufacturers. And if we break any link in that chain, if we put short-term savings above long-term sustainability, we risk losing the very heart of what makes

Ultimately, every decision we make as professionals has a ripple effect. The manufacturers we choose. The educators we learn from. The mentors we invest in. These choices shape the future of our industry, and the experience of every client who walks through our doors.

So the next time you’re tempted by a lower price tag from a mystery supplier, remember this:

• If something goes wrong, who’s backing you up?

• Is that cheaper product going to last as long — or cost you more in the long run?

• Are you learning how to make it work better, or are you figuring it out on your own with no support?

• Are you choosing ethics, or turning a blind eye?

The extra $100 you spend with a reputable manufacturer isn’t just a product cost — it’s an investment in quality, in client trust, in professional support, and in the long-term health of your business.

Support the manufacturers who support you. Invest in the education that moves you forward. Stand tall in both the alternative hair world and the creative salon space.

That’s how we grow. That’s how we lead. That’s how we protect the heart of this industry.

new members in 2018. While we were both long time hair wearers, we as business owners were both new to hair replacement. We ended up sharing a table at lunch on the first day of the conference and quickly bonded over shared dreams (and shared fears). Eight years later we continue to share our dreams and our fears, almost on a daily basis! We support, challenge, and cheer for each other through the ups and downs of business ownership, and in life.

Our Tips for Making the Most of Your Conference:

The AHLC's HairNow Conference is a very special place for us and one of our favorite industry events of the year. It provides so many incredible opportunities – having many of your favorite vendors in one place, learning new techniques, seeing the latest innovations, and networking with industry colleagues.

As former new members ourselves, we know that preparing for a jam-packed educational event can be overwhelming, so we put together a few tips to follow to ensure you get the most from your time and your investment!

Find Your Next Business Bestie

It also gives you so many new cheerleaders to celebrate business successes!

Join Us for a New Member Coffee Meet and Greet!

Is this your first time attending the conference? Has it been years since you have attended? Are you hoping to connect with other new members this year? Everyone is welcome to join us, we will be hosting group meet up on Saturday morning.

We will share more about how we met, how we support each other, and answer any questions you might have. It will be the perfect opportunity to connect with other new members.

We look forward to meeting you soon!

● Check the website often for updates leading up to the conference. You will find information about preconference special vendor sessions that take place Friday and how to register. In addition, there are regular updates about conference sessions for Saturday through Monday.

● Read the description for every session and map out your schedule ahead of time. Each session will be offered twice during the conference. Think ahead about which sessions you plan to attend on which day, so you don’t miss any of your preferred sessions.

● Spend as much time on the vendor floor as you can. This is an incredible opportunity to meet with your preferred vendors face-to-face and to learn about new vendors. Make it a goal to introduce yourself to every vendor on the vendor floor – you never know what your business may need in the year ahead.

● Don’t forget to have a way to share your contact information. Bring your business cards or make sure your digital contact information is up to date.

● Network! Network! Network! The connections you can build with like-minded industry colleagues are priceless.

By mastering these systems, you’ll not only meet a wider range of client needs but also set your business apart in a competitive landscape.

Additionally, we will feature a deep dive into Tape Staxx, Jon Renau’s innovative adhesive solution that simplifies and strengthens the application process for hair systems. Caiden will demonstrate how this method can help improve consistency and hold for your clients, making it a valuable addition to your professional toolkit. You’ll get to see Tape Staxx in action both on stage and at the Jon Renau booth, where

Founded in 1987, Hi-MO is one of the most trusted names in Korea’s wig industry. We proudly run over 70 stores with more than 700 expert stylists, all dedicated to helping people look and feel their best.

We’ve also introduced Hair You Go, our AI-powered virtual try-on tool. Just upload a photo and see how different styles look on you — no need to try on dozens of wigs in person. It’s easy, fun, and helps customers make the right choice from the start.

If you’re heading to the AHLC conference in Fort Lauderdale, don’t miss the Hi-MO

booth! You’ll see our newest 3D Head Scanner in action, meet our skilled technicians, and try Hair You Go for yourself. Plus, check out our Featherline Micro Weft — super thin, light, and durable — as well as our premium Agacci collection, made from natural human hair, and our Nexart Hair, a heat-friendly synthetic fiber.

And here’s something special: a session with Richard Gizzi, a hair educator and innovator with over 50 years of experience. He’ll be sharing modern techniques in custom wig design using the latest tools.

Prerna Khema is the visionary founder behind HairSmart, a fast-growing, awardwinning, plant-based hair restoration brand that’s redefining how the beauty industry approaches hair loss and scalp wellness. A first-generation immigrant, minority entrepreneur, and self-made founder, Prerna bootstrapped HairSmart from the ground up — driven by a deep belief that beauty and health should never come at the cost of harsh drugs or invasive treatments.

HairSmart was born out of years of research, blending clinically backed Ayurvedic ingredients with modern cosmetic science to create powerful,

drug-free solutions for thinning hair. The brand’s proprietary products — including serums, oils, and scalp care — are trusted by top aesthetic clinics, salons, and private label partners across the country. Built around real results, HairSmart offers a full-service, turn-key system that makes it easy for beauty professionals to integrate hair restoration into their existing business model.

As the demand for natural, sciencebacked solutions grows — especially among women experiencing postpartum hair loss, stress-related shedding, or hormonal thinning — HairSmart is meeting the moment with integrity and innovation. What sets the brand apart is its ability to combine wellness and beauty, giving salons a new avenue for service, education, and recurring revenue — no medical license required.

At this year’s conference, Prerna will teach: "Integrating Hair Growth Business into Salons: Boost Revenue & Client Loyalty"

This practical, revenue-focused session is designed specifically for stylists and salon owners ready to tap into the booming hair wellness market. Attendees will walk away with:

• A ready-to-use service and retail menu

• Award-winning, drug-free hair growth essentials

• Tools to educate clients on scalp health and regrowth

• A path to $100–$200 in recurring revenue per client per month

Prerna’s session will empower beauty professionals to expand beyond hair replacement and styling — into the world of hair growth and scalp health — all while strengthening client trust and boosting long-term loyalty.

For salons looking to stay ahead of industry trends, this session is more than a class — it’s a gateway to the future of beauty wellness.

Your ability to communicate, connect, and close a conversation efficiently and effectively produces a positive call-to-action (a sale) on the part of your client. It is the most influential, persuasive, and powerful skill in your business, sales, financial, and personal life. Without this ability, your products and services will remain sitting on a shelf. It can also be the differentiator between growing a business or tragically going out of business, and is the most powerful skill that separates the winners from those who have not yet learned how to win.

I am often amazed that highly-talented, highly-skilled, and highly-motivated stylists and owners will spend enormous amounts of time, energy, and money with the sole intention of driving new clients to their business. Yet, they will often overlook the one key element that will virtually guarantee sales closing success - their ability to communicate, connect, and close efficiently and effectively when in direct contact with their prospect when in consultation.

As your ability to communicate, connect, and close effectively and efficiently are crucial to increasing sales and revenues, so it will be your ability to create a "brand in demand" that

Special Touch Salon, Poland, OH

After receiving my cosmetology license, I continued my education in managing and teaching licenses. Although I love doing hair and making people feel better about themselves, I wanted to do more. I was aware of the trauma from hair loss that those undergoing chemo treatments were experiencing and soon became aware of the heartbreak of those who suffer from alopecia. I've worked all over the country in the hair replacement field, holding licenses in multiple states. I've done fashion shows and platform work. I've had the pleasure of improving the appearance and selfesteem of both everyday people and some very wellknown celebrities. However the thing I'm proud of the most is the help that I've given to those who needed it the most — cancer patients. I helped start a local nonprofit cancer support group called Yellow Brick Place. I've also done quite a bit of work for the American Cancer Society, and started "The Pink Hair for the Cure" program here in Youngstown Ohio in memory of my sister who passed away from cancer. As a cancer survivor myself, I know firsthand the heartbreak of hair loss. Now that I'm cancer-free, I

want to devote as much of myself as I possibly can to helping others look and feel their absolute best.
