AFS INDIA TEAM
Syed Maaz Hasan Hashmi, 18+ Sending & Hosting Assistant

As an AFS India Associate for 18+ Programs (Sending & Hosting) with over a decade of experience with volunteering in intercultural programs and education, I focus on building crosscultural connections and empowering young people to become global citizens. By organizing educational initiatives, I’ve created life-changing experiences that encourage intercultural understanding and lasting bonds.
My extensive experience led me to the AFS India office, where I continue to contribute towards meaningful projects. Diya Ma’am’s vision of relaunching the 18+ program inspired me to join AFS 18+ Sending & Hosting Department, further fueling my commitment to this work.
In my role, I’ve supported the hosting department by assisting with storytelling and sharing ideas from my high school yearbook. This experience has taught me valuable skills in writing success stories, drawing inspiration from resources like Harvard Business Review articles. The environment at AFS is a constant learning experience, allowing me to grow professionally and personally. I’ve also leveraged social media, using my personal networks to generate leads from students interested in going abroad, demonstrating the importance of digital outreach.
A strong initiative begins with solid data collection, and I’m actively involved in gathering and organizing information for upcoming programs. This role has awakened a tech-savvy side of me that keeps me engaged. Additionally, I’ve helped revamp the Yoga and Culinary programs alongside my team, creating richer experiences for upcoming exchange students eager to see India from a local perspective.
One memorable experience was visiting Delhi Haat to buy handmade gifts like purses, bookmarks, and diaries for our international guests. It’s a joy when the organization encourages exploration of local markets during work hours.
My efforts have significantly impacted students, many of whom now feel more confident about understanding American culture. During pre-departure orientations, I’ve led sessions on India-US immigration, cultural adjustment, and breaking down stereotypes. I’ve motivated students to navigate cultural barriers, fostering empathy and global awareness. As we aim to recruit more participants for this rewarding work, I’ve been active with the YES Students department and will soon participate in panel interviews in Delhi to select future KLYES candidates. This role has allowed me to make a meaningful difference in students lives while deepening my understanding of intercultural dialogue, enhancing my leadership and problem-solving skills, and strengthening my commitment to fostering global empathy and cooperation.
VOLUNTEER IMPACT STORY
Mariya Shah, President AFS Lucknow Chapter
Becoming an AFS volunteer has transformed me into a global citizen Together, we strive to build a world of peace and love. One of the most enriching aspects of AFS is how it connects chapters across India and the World.
As President of the relatively new AFS Lucknow chapter, my journey began at the AVM in Bangalore last year, where I met my extended AFS family It was a learning experience, with volunteers sharing their stories and planning the chapter’s vision board, strengthening our commitment to growth.
A milestone in our chapter’s journey was the decision to host a student from Japan. This marked a significant step forward, and soon after, a student from our chapter was selected for the YES program to go to the US. Working closely with these students has deepened my cultural understanding, showing how beautifully AFS bridges differences. Our Japanese student is now looking forward to celebrating Diwali, while our student in the US is preparing for Christmas, proving that AFS unites us beyond borders and religion

Volunteering with AFS India has allowed us to give back through community service in which we focus on health, gender justice, environment, and literacy, aiming for a positive societal impact. With the support of the National Office, we are motivated to continue this fulfilling journey. AFS India has given both recognition and purpose to our work, for which I’m forever grateful.
Let's keep singing,
“Walk together, Talk together all ye people of the earth. Then and only then, shall we have peace”.

As I began to open up and connect with others, I discovered the joy of sharing experiences and learning about their culture. It was a journey of adventure and discovery, filled with memorable moments. Unfortunately, just as I was starting to truly engage and enjoy my time there, it was already time to return home.
Overall, my trip to Denmark was not only enjoyable but also transformative. It taught me the value of stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new experiences. I left with unforgettable memories and a sense of fulfillment that I will cherish for years to come.”

ALUMNI IMPACT STORIES
YES ALUMNI

Some YES alumni recently participated in the Panel Interview for the upcoming YES batch (2025-2026) The interviews were conducted at four locations across the country: the U.S. Consulates and American Centre(s) in Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Chennai. The participants represented a diverse mix from remote areas, cities, and small towns across India, reflecting the program's commitment to socioeconomic diversity. Alumni involvement in the panel further enhanced this diversity and created a fullcircle experience for those who once embarked on the same journey as exchange students.

From Candidate to Alumni Panellist!
Sai Charan, an alumnus from YES ‘22, shared his experience:
"You heard it right YES, I said YES to the opportunity to be a YES student, and now I've become an alumnus and a panellist for the KL-YES Program Session 2025-26 Panel Interview, organised at the American Corner in Hyderabad. It was an immense pleasure to assist the selection committee, which included the Public Diplomacy Officer from the U.S. Consulate General, Hyderabad, a staff member, and a board member from AFS India, along with other alumni from Hyderabad.
I was responsible for handling documentation, proctoring the in-class essay, and moderating the group discussion panel. It felt nostalgic to be sitting on the other side of the table, as just four years ago, I was in the same position as the candidates. Back then, I was a hopeful candidate looking forward to the opportunity. Now, as an alumnus, I find myself equally enthusiastic, eager to help others step into these life-changing shoes."
