National Director
AFS Intercultural Programs India
I have been humbled by AFS India’s announcement that I have been recognised as the AAI Volunteer of the Year 2025. In keeping with the very definition of the word, volunteer, I have immersed myself in intercultural work without expectation. The award comes as recognition of the exemplary work done by the Delhi Chapter – and sparks a walk down memory lane.
Hosting an American teenager for nearly a year in 2010-11 opened me to the world of AFS besides giving me the opportunity to experience being parent to multiple children rather than just be a single-child parent It was natural that I was drawn to the world of inter-cultural learnings and could devote time as a volunteer in the Delhi Chapter.
I am grateful that over the past decade and a half, I could make many new friends from different chapters across several States and some from overseas. More importantly, I believe that I have evolved as a person, thanks to the great intercultural learnings not just during volunteer exchange visits to Germany but also within India.
I have been fortunate to undergo several courses, including Global Competence Certificate, and am now a facilitator as well. While we may think that lived experience is a great way to learn, it is also important to study and understand the theories and philosophies that contribute to making us better citizens of the world

More than anything else, it is blessing that I get messages and calls from many a Host Student long after they have returned to their respective homes. I will close by reiterating that the award is a recognition of the team that I am privileged to be a part of and that it motivates me to reset, recalibrate and restart with the same intent – of doing my bit to make this world a better place.
