success, fulfilling its promise to Reunite, Relive, Renew, and Rejoice. The event brought together individuals who participated in the AFS intercultural exchange program over six decades ago.
The program was thoughtfully designed to evoke the spirit of the 1960s, offering attendees the opportunity to relive their former years through shared stories, songs, and even dancing. A key highlight was Jacob Mathew's workshop, which aimed to renew participants' understanding of intercultural exchange in today’s world. The workshop served as a platform to pass on the baton from past Returnees to present Returnees and Volunteers, encouraging reflections on the evolution of global exchanges and discussions on what aspects of culture should be celebrated, deliberated, or created.
The reunion also emphasized the importance of rejoicing in the present moment, with a focus on art and cultural expression. The attendees were treated to a vibrant Yakshagana performance, showcasing the rich traditions of Karnataka, followed by an evening of live music and camaraderie The second evening featured a mesmerizing musical performance by Shabnam Virmani and Mukthiyar Ali, who beautifully blended Sufi and Rajasthani folk traditions, further enriching the cultural experience. Beyond the engaging program, the exceptional hospitality at Mulberry Shades contributed significantly to the event’s success.
Notably, the Reunion was an intergenerational gathering, demonstrating that Senior and Junior Returnees, Volunteers who are not Returnees, and the AFS India Board and National Office can all work together seamlessly, ensuring a robust AFS India. The Board and National Director were involved from start to finish, underscoring their commitment to the Organization’s mission and vision Equally invaluable were the dedicated Volunteers, each of whom was assigned to a guest and remained available throughout the event to assist, ensuring a smooth and enriching experience for all.
The AFS 1960 Returnees Reunion was more than just a nostalgic gathering; it was a powerful testament to the enduring impact of intercultural exchange and a reaffirmation of AFS’s mission to build bridges of understanding across cultures. The event successfully reunited a unique group of individuals, allowed them to relive cherished memories, inspired them to renew their commitment to intercultural understanding, and provided opportunities to rejoice in the power of human connection

Another proud moment? Discovery Day for YES Program Applicants. Volunteers stepped up to screen and mentor aspirants with empathy and nsight, making it a truly meaningful day for both students and selectors.
The chapter also played a crucial role in reviewing ASIA Kakehashi pplications, demonstrating attention to detail and a deep commitment to nurturing deserving talent. And when it came to home visits, volunteers did not just assess logistics they built trust with families, offered reassurance, and sowed the seeds for future exchange stories to bloom.
At the end of the year, the entire Indore chapter came together in a eartwarming display of solidarity and compassion through the Muthi har Anaaj movement. United by a shared sense of responsibility, members actively contributed to collecting and distributing handfuls of rains, which collectively turned into a significant supply for those in eed Their dedicated efforts ensured that countless underprivileged amilies received essential food support, spreading hope and warmth uring the festive season. The movement not only addressed hunger but lso strengthened the spirit of community service across Indore.
Beyond Tasks Building Connections: Monthly meetings go beyond agendas they’re spaces for learning, laughter, and bonding. Whether it’s brainstorming over chai or celebrating with a potluck, these gatherings embody the warmth and spirit of AFS. From Diwali festivities to AVM dance rehearsals, the chapter knows how to balance work and joy, creating memories that make volunteering a truly enriching experience.
Looking Ahead: As we welcome new faces and embark on new journeys, the heart of the Indore Chapter remains strong, rooted in unity, driven by purpose, and always guided by the AFS mission.

This story is a beautiful reminder that hosting an exchange student is not just about opening your home, it’s about opening your heart and creating lifelong connections that go beyond borders.
In 2017, Graziana, an exchange student from Italy, embarked on a life-changing journey to India. Hosted by a warm and welcoming Dave host family in the AFS Anand chapter, she experienced the culture, traditions, and deep-rooted bonds that made her stay truly special. Years later, in 2025, Graziana couldn’t resist the pull of her second home. She returned to India, not just as a visitor but as a daughter of the family that once hosted her. Staying with them again, she relived the cherished moments, strengthened the lifelong bond they had built.
“Graziana, whom we lovingly called Radha, was hosted by our family in 2017. It was a wonderful experience for both her and us. Recently, she had her graduation ceremony on January 26, 2025. When her biological parents asked her what she wanted as a graduation gift, she replied, ‘I want to visit my Indian family.’ As part of that gift, she arrived here on February 12. Words cannot express the happiness we felt as host parents. We met again after seven long years, yet the bond between us remained as strong as ever. That bond is what brought her back to India.
When she landed in Mumbai, someone asked if she was visiting India for tourism. She replied, ‘No, I’m here to visit my family,’ which surprised the person Even now, she touches the feet of every elder who visits her, a gesture she learned as part of Indian culture, and greets everyone with “Jay Shree Krishna.” While she was staying with us, she had an online job interview and got selected. She believes she received this opportunity with the blessings of her Indian parents. We visited the Statue of Unity with her, and she felt that India has changed in many positive ways. She loved indulging in Indian delicacies like pani puri, Punjabi and Gujarati cuisine, vada pav, pav bhaji, dosa, and of course, chai. We also visited AFS India member schools and had meaningful sessions with students, followed by interactive Q&As. She encouraged students to participate in sending programs and inspired families to host an AFS student.
The day before her departure, she began crying and made us cry too. Even now, our home feels empty without our Radha During her exchange year, she would often say ‘thank you’ and ‘sorry ’ I used to remind her, ‘In India, we don’t say sorry or thank you to parents.’
To those who hesitate to host, I just want to say: these kinds of relationships only grow in a garden called AFS. So keep hosting.”
-Shalin Dave from AFS Anand chapter Host Father
