n my life, but life in a year!

exchange began like it does for many a dream ng India, I pictured Paris in all its romantic glory: reets, the Eiffel Tower glowing at dusk, the Seine ories, and most of all the language, so tender it even the mundane sound poetic.
did live those imagined moments during my 10 rance, it was just the tip of the iceberg. As ce joked an exchange year is like a pregnancy: a r of emotions, exciting yet terrifying. You eat, you w But in the end, you gain a new family and an hat’s always worth it
You relearn life from scratch how to eat, speak, socialize with completely different people. It’s scary, yes, but also incredibly rewarding. I felt every emotion possible, learned to empathize, to adapt, and most importantly, gained a sense of how vast and humbling the world really is. It teaches you to laugh with the world, take it in, and let your heart grow as big as it.
The highlight of my exchange? The people From learning to cook ratatouille to managing expenses, nothing compares to the friendships I made. I now have a little sister in Brazil who calls me “didi,” an Italian friend whose photo I carry in my phone case, a buddy who struggles in every language I know but still texts me weekly, and a loving host family in the south of France Saying goodbye was heartbreaking but that’s the price of loving people across the globe: you give pieces of your heart to many places, hoping they’ll meet again someday.
Yes, my exchange changed my life maybe not radically, but it expanded my mind and strengthened my voice It didn’t rewrite who I am, it simply added new chapters. And maybe that’s what an exchange really is: not just stepping out into a new world, but also learning to return to your old one with a heart made bigger by experience.

My experience there was nothing short of a dream from seeing the Eiffel Tower and cruising down the Seine to attending a French school
Initially, I did face challenges such as homesickness and adjusting in a new environment but as they say, "What doesn’t challenge you, doesn’t change you." This journey have taught me that adventures and experiences are life’s greatest teachers
France’s rich culinary heritage and mesmerizing architecture have left me in awe. Living like a local, I've learned to appreciate the French "Art of Living”, which emphasizes savoring life It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me forever
My exchange was full of surprises and growth. Solving problems independently and creating lasting memories was incredibly fulfilling. My host family was amazing, guiding me through France and making the experience even more special. Immersing myself in French culture while sharing my own was equally rewarding.
Throughout the journey, I've become more adaptable, resilient, and self-aware. The support from my host family and the AFS staff has been incredible From braving the freezing weather to adjusting to a new school, every moment has been thrilling.
For future exchange students, one tip: always carry both cards and cash. Many public transport stations are unmanned, so having a card is crucial as the ticket machines only accept cards. But always be very cautious as pickpockets are very common
This exchange have been a stunning adventure. I’ve explored new perspectives, forged unforgettable bonds, and made memories I will cherish for a lifetime. This experience has truly been a treasure

my perspective in many ways especially how I view other people and their thoughts. I went from being a boy with social anxiety to someone who can now communicate easily with strangers and become part of their lives.
This program is definitely a great way to become more independent It teaches you how to face real-life challenges, understand them, and express your thoughts and emotions. When you begin a journey like this, you're essentially stepping into a phase of adapting and learning on your own, in a completely new environment.
It can be emotionally tough at first being away from your family and friends but if you truly want the experience, you must make that decision yourself. What impacted me most was realizing how much my skills had improved. I discovered a potential in myself that gives me the confidence to face anything whether I’m alone or surrounded by strangers. I learned that clinging to your ego doesn't help; sometimes, you just have to go with your gut and trust yourself.
Yes, you will face challenges during your stay, no matter where you go But that’s exactly why students should participate in such programs it helps build confidence, shift perspectives, improve social skills, and most importantly, allows you to learn about another culture while sharing your own.

Finding Home Away from Home
Every day brought a new adventure, whether it was trying to pronounce Italian words without stumbling or figuring out how to take the bus to school. The most surprising part was how quickly Italy started to feel like home.
I still remember meeting my host family the day after I landed We were supposed to gather in a large hall with around 60 or 70 people. I was nervous but excited. As soon as I walked in, everyone started clapping, and there was my family, waiting for me. The moment I saw them, my heart calmed, and I instantly felt relaxed From that moment on, I had no issues with them They embraced me as part of the family even before I arrived, and just two months in, it already felt like I had been with them for years. We ate dinner together, shared stories, and learned about each other’s cultures. It was amazing how much I grew simply by being part of their everyday life.
School, on the other hand, was a bit more challenging keeping up in classes where everything was taught in a language I was still learning was tough. But my classmates and teachers were incredibly supportive. On my second day, they threw a surprise party for me They brought chips and a pie and played a stereotypical Hindi song. It made me laugh, but what really touched me was the thought behind it. They had been curious about India and always helped me, whether by explaining difficult concepts or including me in conversations during breaks. Those small gestures meant everything and showed me how kind people could be, even far from home
Living there taught me that I was more adaptable than I thought. I discovered strength and courage I didn’t know I had, and I learned to stay optimistic no matter what. Even when a day had been hard, I knew the next had a chance to shine
To anyone considering studying abroad with AFS, my advice is simple: go for it. It might be overwhelming at first, but the connections you made and the personal growth you experienced is worth every bit of uncertainty. This journey has changed me in ways I’ll carry with me forever

go home is the most intimidating yet the g” r in Japan was a profoundly surreal hat allowed me to immerse myself in a culture I had only known through anime! I learned that not all classrooms have four walls the world truly is the best teacher, and travel is the most enriching way to learn.
This journey of cultural immersion and personal growth taught me to find beauty in imperfection through Wabi-sabi, embrace discipline through Kendo, and experience inner peace during traditional tea ceremonies. From the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms to the quiet serenity of shrines, I learned to find joy in the moment and meaning in the transient.
Japan changed me in ways I never imagined It led me to selfdiscovery, helped me step far outside my comfort zone, and opened my mind to a world of new opportunities. Living with my host family, exploring Japan, and diving into its elegant cuisine taught me that even simplicity can hold great depth sometimes, less is more
This experience shaped me into a global citizen with a deeper understanding of peace, culture, and connection. As I explored Japan and myself I realized that if we were meant to stay in one place, we’d have roots instead of feet. Say yes, take the leap, try everything Believe me, it’s all worth it
The people I met, the memories I made, and the bonds I formed in Japan will stay with me forever.
Thank you AFS for this wonderful opportunity!

VIHAAN SINGH
Lancers International School
Host School: Kantonsschule Sargans, Pizolstr, Switzerland
My name is Vihaan Singh, and I was on the AFS exchange program to Switzerland from India, in 2024-2025
Before joining AFS, I thought all countries were fairly similar, with only slight differences between them. I thought the perspectives of most people were the same, with subtle changes due to culture. Looking back, I can see just how much my thoughts about this have changed Even though I only went to one other country, I met countless people, all from different countries and backgrounds, with their own unique cultures and opinions, which showed me just how distinctive people are.
As a participant, I was excited but nervous, not knowing what would come, but knowing for sure that it would be interesting. I was quite reserved at the start, but I gradually became more confident, thanks to my host family, and my (exchange student) friends. Living in Switzerland, I experienced daily life in a new culture, which helped me become more adaptable, and experience all the things a different country has to offer
I gained two unique things from this program, each valuable in its own way. First, I became more willing to try new things. It taught me that I couldn’t truly know what I liked without first giving it a chance This program has also helped me with my career. Not only is it an excellent addition to CVs, or to college applications, I went with my host father, who is an alumni of ETH, to sit in on an actual lecture at ETH, which is among the world's top universities, and now my future goal.
The other thing is my language proficiency in German I have studied German since I was very young in India, at school and at home. I never got very far. I learnt more German in 1 year on the exchange program than I ever did in 7. An exchange program fully immerses you in the language. You are going to learn it, regardless of whether you want to or not (I wanted to)
To anyone considering an exchange program, I would say: do it even if it scares you, it’s worth the challenges. The program will leave a positive impact on you for life.
