DIRECTOR’S DESK
Dear AFSers,
My heartfelt gratitude to each one of you for your unwavering commitment of our volunteers, alums, and member schools at AFS India Your efforts, whether it’s planting tree saplings, organising community clean-ups, or raising awareness about environmental issues, are not just simple acts of volunteerism. You are the backbone of the positive transformation. You are not just volunteers, you are the heart and soul of this movement, and the change makers. Let’s work together to get our communities involved and make the impact ever greater
We all are aware that India, with its rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystems, is facing a serious environmental crisis. Rapid urbanization, deforestation, pollution, and climate change are putting immense pressure on our natural resources.
Major cities like Delhi struggle with toxic air, while rivers such as the Ganga and Yamuna are choked with untreated waste. In this context, aligning our actions with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 15 (Life on Land) is more critical than ever.
Each one of us can play a powerful role in addressing these challenges. We can do so by taking action and collaborating, forming eco-clubs, organizing awareness campaigns, and leading by example, we can influence our communities to adopt sustainable habits. Simple actions like carrying cloth bags, avoiding single-use plastics, planting trees, and conserving energy and water can create meaningful impact when practiced consistently.
One of the most immediate and visible problems in India is littering Trash on roadsides, in public spaces, and water bodies harms not only the environment but also public health. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose and pose serious threats to animals and marine life. Each individual must be mindful of where and how they dispose waste. We must always throw garbage in designated bins, avoid littering, and participate in clean-up drives We need to encourage friends and family to follow suit
Every action counts. When individuals make responsible choices like using sustainable products, composting kitchen waste, or saying no to single use plastic, they contribute to the larger global goal of protecting the planet.
This is not just about saving nature; it's about saving our future By aligning with the SDGs and taking small but conscious steps, we can lead India toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable tomorrow. Let’s act now!! Take action now for our country, our planet, and the generations to come.
Warm Regards, Diya Badgel National Director AFS Intercultural Programs India

Heena’s Story: A Heart Behind Every Journey
When you meet Heena, you instantly feel her passion for people, for travel. With over 10 years of experience in international education and student exchange, Heena has dedicated her heart to helping young people explore the world and discover themselves
Working with AFS India has been more than just a job for Heena it’s been a journey of growth, connection, and purpose. As a Programs Manager, she wears many hats. From promoting exchange programs, guiding students and families through the application process, managing recruitment, to being there for students until they complete their exchange journey Heena is involved in every step.
And she wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I feel like a tiny screw in every student’s journey,” she says with a smile. “But I know even that small part can hold something big together.”
Heena has helped over 500+ international students through AFS India programs. Each student is more than just a number to her they are a story, a future changemaker, a spark waiting to shine. Her love for people doesn’t stop at work She has opened her own home to welcome two exchange students one from Italy and another from Japan Hosting, she says, was one of the most heartwarming experiences of her life. "They became a part of my family. We laughed, cooked & explored together"
But Heena’s story didn’t start here. Before AFS, she worked in the social development sector, especially with refugees and people with disabilities She studied Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy at Jamia Millia Islamia, and those early days gave her a strong belief in equal opportunities for all.
Working at AFS India helped her grow in more ways than one. “Connecting with people is a magic skill I have learned through AFS,” she shares It’s a skill that has taken her far literally! Thanks to the confidence and exposure she gained at AFS, Heena has traveled to 13+ countries on solo trips, discovering cultures, making friends, and creating memories she’ll never forget.
“AFS India changed my life. It taught me that the best things in life come from exploring and experiencing. It gave me the courage to step out and see the world with my own eyes.”
Ask her what she loves most about her work, and she beams: “Everything.”
