Day 1 | 12 May 2023, Friday
Informal Networking & Intercultural Learning
● The AFS India Regional Meet – North Zone Member Schools not only provided a platform for formal discussions and sessions but also facilitated an environment where individuals could bond, learn, and grow on a personal level.
● As the participants discovered the beauty of the host school campus and engaged in lively conversations during dinner, they broadened their perspectives, deepened their intercultural competence, and developed a greater appreciation for India’s diversity. Participants engaged in meaningful conversations, sharing experiences, and forging connections that will undoubtedly foster lifelong friendships and collaborations.
● The relaxed atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for cross-cultural exchange, where individuals from diverse backgrounds embraced the chance to learn from one another. These moments of camaraderie and cultural immersion added an extra layer
of richness to the overall experience, highlighting the power of informal interactions in enhancing global understanding and cooperation.
Day 2 | 13 May 2023, Saturday
The AFS India Regional Meet for North Zone Member Schools was held at Pinegrove School, Dharampur from 12 - 14 May 2023. This prestigious event brought together representatives, directors, principals, educators, and students from 38 renowned schools across North India [60+ Educators and School Leaders & 65+ students].
The opening ceremony was graced by Mr. Sanjay Kundu (IPS), the Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh, who served as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Zahur H. Zaidi (IPS), the Inspector General (Admin) Shimla, who attended as the Guest of Honour. The event aimed to foster inspiring discussions and encourage imaginative thinking in the field of global education.
The success of this event would not have been possible without the graciousness and support of Capt. A J Singh, Executive Director, Pinegrove School, Dharampur along with his team of dedicated educators and students. Their warm hospitality, meticulous planning, and efforts to ensure a seamless event were instrumental in creating a conducive environment for productive discussions and meaningful interactions.

Opening Ceremony & Speech by Chief Guest

The event commenced with a mesmerizing music and dance performance that captivated the audience and set the stage for stimulating conversations. Renowned experts and distinguished guests addressed the gathering on the theme of 'Inspire and Imagine.'
Mr. Sanjay Kundu (IPS), the Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh addressed the gathering with his thoughts on the role of global education in fostering empathy and emphasized the importance of discipline in students' journey toward success
Session on 'In Matters of Leadership, Leaders Matter’
Lt. Gen. Surendra Kulkarni, the Director of Mayo College Ajmer, conducted a session titled 'In Matters of Leadership, Leaders Matter, ' offering valuable insights on leadership.
Lieutenant General Kulkarni delivered a captivating and enlightening session on the qualities that define true leadership. Drawing upon the inspiring stories of iconic figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, and Narayan Murthi, General Kulkarni eloquently showcased the multifaceted nature of leadership. He emphasized the importance of internalizing virtues such as magnanimity, self-belief, fortitude, and humility, which have enabled these historical leaders to overcome the perils of hubris.
The session served as a powerful awakening for aspiring global leaders and change-makers, urging them to transcend mediocrity and embrace the ideals of leadership. General Kulkarni's discourse resonated deeply with the audience, reminding them of the significance of embodying moral fortitude in their lives with utmost sincerity. It reaffirmed the notion that true success lies not only in external achievements but also in conquering the battles within oneself. The session left a lasting impact, empowering students to strive for greatness and embrace the transformative power of authentic leadership.
Session on AFS Programs

Furthermore, a session was facilitated by Ms. Manjula Devi during the AFS India Regional Meet with the support of three AFS Program Alumni, a host father who had recently hosted an AFS student for one year, and AFS Global Competence Certificate participants. These individuals shared their personal experiences and insights, highlighting the transformative power of AFS programs.

The alumni spoke passionately about how their intercultural experiences broadened their perspectives, enhanced their global competence, and contributed to their personal and professional growth. The host father shared heartwarming anecdotes about his family's journey of hosting an AFS student and emphasized the profound impact it had on their lives. The AFS Global Competence Certificate participant discussed the valuable skills and knowledge gained through the certificate program, which equips individuals with the necessary tools to thrive in an interconnected world.
This session provided a unique perspective on the long-lasting effects of AFS programs and further emphasized the importance of fostering intercultural understanding and global citizenship.
Announcement of AFS Fundraising Program in collaboration with Muniversiti MU20 Indore October 2022
During the AFS India Regional Meet, Mr Tejas Jain, Chief Executive Officer, Muniversiti EdCorp made an exciting announcement about the upcoming MU20 Indore Program, scheduled to take place in October/November 2023. The team highlighted the success of the Indore World Summit held in 2022, which brought together young change-makers and leaders from around the world to discuss pressing global issues. Building on the momentum generated by the summit, the MU20 Indore Program aims to provide a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a multicultural environment and develop essential skills for global citizenship.
The program, a collaboration between AFS India and Muniversiti Edcorp, serves as a fundraising initiative to create a scholarship fund. The funds raised through this program will be used to provide scholarships to deserving students, enabling them to access life-changing intercultural experiences through AFS programs

The Muniversiti Team shared details about the program, including its curriculum, and cultural activities. This announcement generated enthusiasm and anticipation among the attendees, as it presented a remarkable chance for schools to participate in a transformative program while supporting a noble cause.
Session on 'Nurturing a Global Mindset for all Round Success’
Mr. Jayant Krishna led an enriching session exclusively for students, focusing on 'Nurturing a Global Mindset for all Round Success. ' He delivered an impactful lecture on creating a better youth, aiming to empower the young generation for India's progress.
He highlighted three key areas: humor, innovation, and presentation skills. Humor, as exemplified by figures like Albert Einstein, equips individuals to tackle unpredictable situations with resilience. Innovation was emphasized as the driving force for national growth, encouraging creative thinking and problem-solving. Presentation skills were highlighted as crucial for making a lasting impression and effectively conveying ideas.
Through engaging stories, Mr. Krishna effectively conveyed these keys for progress; inspiring the audience to contribute to a better India. The lecture instilled aspiration and a sense of purpose, encouraging the youth to embrace humor, innovation, and effective presentation skills. Attendees
were motivated to strive for excellence and actively participate in shaping the nation's future. Overall, Mr. Jayant Krishna's lecture provided valuable insights and practical advice, leaving a lasting impact on the audience's minds.
Session 'Reimagining AFS’
Dr. Sumer Singh conducted an enlightening session on 'Reimagining AFS,' specifically tailored for school principals and educators. The session aimed to provide valuable insights and perspectives on how AFS programs can be reimagined His erudition was evident as he delved into various aspects of AFS and proposed innovative ideas for its implementation He emphasized the importance of fostering intercultural understanding and global competence among students in today's interconnected world.
Throughout the session, Dr. Singh shared practical strategies and best practices for incorporating AFS programs into school curricula. He discussed the significance of creating meaningful partnerships and collaborations between schools and AFS to maximize the impact of intercultural learning.

The session provided a platform for school principals and educators to engage in thoughtful discussions and exchange ideas on how to reimagine AFS programs within their specific educational contexts The session was a stepping stone towards fostering a more globally competent and culturally sensitive generation.
Visits and Exploration
In addition to the enlightening sessions, the distinguished guests and student delegates had the opportunity to explore the local area. The guests visited the Mohan Meakin Brewery in Kasauli, gaining insights into the brewing process and local industry. Meanwhile, the students enjoyed a trip to the PA Pinions Watch Factory in Dharampur, where they learned about watchmaking craftsmanship.
The day ended with a sumptuous dinner and an informal networking opportunity for the participants.
Day 3 | 14 May 2023, Sunday
Way Forward 2023-24 | Brainstorming & Ideation
Mr. Rashid Sharfuddin outlined the benefits that AFS programs bring for students, educators, parents and the whole school community He emphasized that AFS is about intercultural learning, global citizenship and learning from each other. He highlighted that North Zone has the highest number of member schools among 5 zones - North, South, East, West & Central.
Group Activity - Roses, Thorns & Buds
The AFS India Regional Meet featured an engaging group activity called ‘Roses, Thorns & Buds,’ conducted by Ms. Diya Badgel and Mr. Rashid Sharfuddin. This activity aimed to stimulate discussions about AFS Programs and collaboration with AFS India. The participants were divided into three groups - School Leaders, Educators and Students. They explained what all the groups were supposed to do:
● What are the schools in the zone doing good (roses)
● What are the issues they are facing with respect to AFS programs (thorns)
● What activities you would like AFS India to take up (buds)

Each group got 45 minutes to discuss amongst themselves and then one by one presented it to the whole audience. They were further advised to divide themselves into 3 sub-groups to take up the sub-topics.
Group 1 [School Leaders] Presentation

The School Leaders group was invited on the stage to present. Mr J K Saini facilitated the presentation of this group. He acknowledged the inputs shared by all the team members, especially B Grewal and Maj Wariach for their experienced and mature points to deliberate.
Roses
● AFS provides intercultural learning opportunities not only for students but also teachers and school heads.
● Understanding and respecting differences
● Development of confidence-building and 21st-century skills
● Cultural values
● Network and new bonds lead to collaborative learning
Thorns
● Domestic class exchanges need to be increased
● Programs for younger students
● The role of School Heads and AFS Coordinators needs mentoring to increase the program participation
● Lack of virtual programs
● Virtual platform for North Zone schools to have the opportunity to discuss and come up with new ideas to help each other
● Less clarity on after AFS programs - alumni engagement and volunteering with AFS
● High Program Fee makes it difficult to convince parents
● The long-term program leads to a loss of academics
● Disconnect with the school after the child gets selected and participates in the program. The communication is not reaching the school and it remains between AFS and parents.
● Finding Host Families is a challenge and AFS should assist
● Finding the right person at AFS India to talk about specific programs can be shared to make it easier for schools to coordinate.

Buds
● Awareness of the AFS Program through induction, AFS History, marketing, domestic class exchanges from schools to colleges, tangible documentation and recording of the program experience through a digital library that can be accessed by all
● Adventure theme Activities to build life skills - rescue and relief
● Local culture and native language should be promoted through class exchanges and conferences.

Mr. Anil moderated the session of the educators. He described thorns as suggestions and must not be avoided.

● Safety and security of students especially with so many gun violence incidents in the USA these days.
● How does AFS assist if there is a lack of friendly mediation during domestic exchange programs?
● What is the fund policy AFS India has to give this kind of Meet experience to schools that are not so affluent as the schools have to pay the National/Regional School Meet registration fee to participate and spend money on travel?
● If the relationship between the two countries is not peaceful, does AFS conduct programs between such countries? What is the take of AFS in such situations?
Buds
● The registration/application process is lengthy
● Organize volunteering community programs for students
● Innovative Virtual Intercultural Competitions at the international level
● College Collaborations internationally for 18+ programs

● Language Courses before going on the program to curtail the language barrier
Mr. Rashid concluded the session by summarizing the points shared and discussed by each group. This activity exemplified the collaborative spirit of AFS, encouraging imaginative thinking and envisioning new possibilities for AFS engagement in India The ideas generated have the potential to shape the future of AFS Programs and collaboration, fostering a stronger network dedicated to intercultural understanding and global education. Kasauli Trip
A local visit was organized for the participants where they got the chance to visit the church and local market and enjoy local street food.
After lunch at the school campus, the participants departed with new memories and new learning.
Student’s Project on UN SDGs #knowyourgoals
One of the highlights of the AFS India Regional Meet at Pinegrove School was the assignment undertaken by participating students, focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of the event, the students prepared a creative display called #knowyourgoals, showcasing the different SDGs and their importance in creating a sustainable future. The students worked diligently to design eye-catching posters and artwork that represented each goal, incorporating thought-provoking messages and visuals.
The culmination of their efforts was a big wall exhibit at Pinegrove School adorned with the displays; capturing the attention and sparking conversations among the attendees. The
#knowyourgoals assignment not only demonstrated the students' understanding of the SDGs but also encouraged others to learn more about these crucial global objectives and take action toward achieving them. The initiative received praise and appreciation from the guests and served as a testament to the passion and commitment of the young generation to addressing global challenges.
Token of Appreciation
To express heartfelt gratitude, tokens of appreciation and regard were presented to the distinguished guests, keynote speakers, AFS team members, school heads, educators, and student delegates. This gesture acknowledged their valuable contributions to the success of the event and highlighted their role in fostering a culture of global education.

The AFS India Regional Meet – North Zone Member Schools was a resounding success, thanks to the exceptional support and dedication of the team at Pinegrove School. The engaging sessions, cultural visits, and overall positive atmosphere made the event a memorable and enriching experience for all participants.
