2024 YOUNG AFS VOLUNTEER AWARD WINNER
Anushka Anbhule
Anushka’s AFS journey began as one of the 20 Indian recipients of the Asia Kakehashi Project to Japan (2021–22), igniting her passion for social impact. This commitment deepened when she represented India at the 28th AFS Youth Assembly in 2023 as the youngest member of the Global Educators’ cohort. Now pursuing undergraduate studies in Japan, Anushka continues her advocacy, including research on global education in rural regions.
Her initiative, Project GloRal, tackles educational inequality in rural areas, aiming to empower students. Targeting SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), the project engages middle and high school students through dynamic sessions promoting awareness and action.
Anushka’s inspiration for Project GloRal stemmed from a transformative moment during a community service event, where a student boldly expressed his ambition to fly to Japan after learning about her experiences. This declaration reaffirmed her belief in the untapped potential within rural communities and the power of nurturing aspirations.
Growing up in rural Maharashtra, Anushka experienced firsthand the disparity between urban and rural education. Observing the limited opportunities in her community motivated her to bridge the gap, encouraging students to embrace responsibility for their learning and seek opportunities actively Project GloRal fosters this mindset, exposing students to innovative education and expanding their horizons.
The project’s impact earned a platform at the AFS Youth Assembly’s ‘Youth at the Frontlines: Action and Impact Hub.’ Winning the AFS Young Volunteer Award highlights not only the success of her project but also the transformative power of education. For Anushka, this recognition underscores the significance of grassroots initiatives in shaping futures, affirming that every effort to promote education and innovation can create lasting change
To fellow young volunteers in the AFS network, Anushka’s message is simple:
“Recognize the power of your passion to create change. Envision the highest level of change you want to make and take that first step. Initiate.”
