AFS INDIA TEAM

Sehar Abdullah, Alumni Coordinator

“From AFS Exchange Student to AFS India Staff”

Joining AFS India as a staff member feels like completing the circle that began when I was a YES exchange student in 2016.

I was placed in Redding, California, where I attended high school and became part of an amazing host community. The love and warmth I received transcended boundaries of race, nation, and religion, giving me a new and holistic perspective on the world that stays with me to this day. Like thousands of other exchange students, I continue to stay in touch with my host community and was fortunate to reunite with them after five years in 2022. So, becoming a staff member at AFS India feels like returning to where I belong.

As a staff member, I was able to see the “back-stage” part of the exchange journey. I appreciated the steps involved in coming together on a life-long journey called EXCHANGE. Unlike in other workplaces where one gets restrained from vertical boundaries, as an alumni-turned staff member I expanded those boundaries. I would voluntarily take-up things from other verticals and become a part of everything that was going on because I am aware of the surprises of an intercultural exchange.

There were days when I visited remote areas of Bihar and Jharkhand to promote YES Programs among the underserved communities. And sometimes, I co-facilitate the orientation sessions with my fellow facilitators Experiences like these always made my heart full

As an alumni coordinator, I continue to give back to the community and make the space widely accessible to people. I enjoy getting “back” our returnees on board with us. I hope to be able to make this community vibrant and give back all the wonderful things that have come to my life as an exchange student.

VOLUNTEERS IMPACT STORY

Shalin Dave

This is Shalin Dave from Amulya Anand Chapter. I am here to share the amazing effects AFS has had on my life. Since joining the organization as a volunteer in 2013, I have felt that AFS is like "Kalpavriksha" for me Whatever I desired, I received even more through volunteering for AFS. If anyone volunteers wholeheartedly for AFS, they get rewarded with many opportunities to shine.

My son Jeet was selected for the YES Scholarship program for 201 Filios, retired USAF colonels residing in Alexandria, VA Jeet was passionate dancer since he was in senior kindergarten. They arr studio called "Born to Dance." Jeet was selected for the secon unfortunately, he couldn't attend because it was on the same date he was returning to India. He won an open American group dance competition and worked in three dance videos of Latin pop star Jason Cerda during his exchange year

The most amazing thing happened when my son came back to India. His host parents offered to host him again if he wanted to return for further studies. So after a year in India, he decided to go back to the USA where the same host family hosted him for another five years, even through both waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Isn't that incredible?

Middle-class families like mine can't imagine affording the expenses of studying in the USA. This was only possible because I am an AFS volunteer.

After my son was selected, I was given the responsibility of Sending Coordinator for my chapter. I have held this role for five years I had the opportunity to manage the sending process for the YES program and other AFS programs for many students. Through this, I was able to create positive effects on their developing teenage minds. Even though many of them were not selected, they are still close to me and stay connected. Generally, on Guru Purnima, educators receive messages from their students although I am not an educator by profession, I receive many messages every Guru Purnima which is the best feeling.

In June 2023, my wife and I visited the USA to attend the graduation ceremony of my son We were hosted by Mr. & Mrs Filios for our entire stay of 25 days including pick up and drop off to the airport. On the day of the ceremony, the host parents canceled all their appointments to attend the ceremony with us bringing along their professional camera to capture the beautiful moments. Maybe my son Jeet is the only AFS alumni who had both moms and dads present for his graduation ceremony.

I have made so many friends throughout India and in several other countries only because I am an AFSER.
