Asif Rabbani | Bangladesh

My four months in Japan felt like a dream, transforming me in many ways. Living with six other AKP students in a dormitory, we formed an unbreakable bond. Embracing Japanese culture wearing kimonos, eating ramen, and singing with friends was easy because of my deep love for the country. The memories and connections I made will stay with me forever, and I hope to return someday.

Pema Youden | Bhutan

My four-month exchange in Japan was a remarkable journey of fun and profound learning. I went from not understanding Japanese to speaking and comprehending bits of the language. My host family’s love and kindness helped me adapt, making the experience special. Celebrating holidays, learning cultural traditions like the tea ceremony, and making international friends deepened my appreciation for Japan, making this journey unforgettable.

Living in Japan enriched my life through cultural immersion and the support of my host family. Despite initial challenges, I adapted to Japanese customs, like nightly baths and traditional meals. Observing the dedication of Japanese students and participating in cultural activities deepened my appreciation for their culture, teaching me adaptability, simplicity, and the value of efficient communication.

Manish Thapa | Nepal

I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to stay with nine different host families and a school dormitory in Japan. The country and its people have become a second home, and the memories of this cultural exchange will always hold a special place in my heart. As an aspiring interior designer, I was deeply inspired by the blend of traditional and modern Japanese interiors, which greatly influenced my career aspirations and personal growth.

Sundas Haider | Pakistan

My exchange program in Hokkaido, Japan, was transformative, immersing me in Japanese culture and fostering a deep sense of belonging. The warmth and hospitality of the people, along with participation in local traditions and academics, expanded my global perspective. This journey deepened my appreciation for diversity, empathy, and global citizenship, leaving a lasting impact on my worldview.

SHAHBAZ

ALI KHAN AND AKASH

YES 2017-18 batch alumni(s) Shahbaz Ali Khan and Akash B. organised a series of three-day workshops on programming and robotics, called CodeBots. The CodeBots workshop was an off-shoot of the YES Alumni Grant Project 2023-2024. It was conducted at five schools in Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram and educated a total of 150 girls who primarily come from underprivileged backgrounds The highlights of the workshop were also covered by the local newspapers.

By educating women on robotics and coding, the workshop addresses the gender gap in the fields of computer science, engineering, and physics. Globally, 7% of women study STEM compared to 22% of men.

Through the workshop, the alumnus trained the students to identify a local problem and design a tech solution using robots. By the end of the workshop, one of the groups designed an automated spice drying shield to protect the spices drying on the terrace from rain. Another remarkable project worked for persons with disabilities by using sensors to detect obstacles and inform the user. The workshop dispelled the myths of gendered norms that discriminated against women and empowered them to get their hands on machines, coding, and robotics
