DIRECTOR’S DESK
-Diya Badgel, National Director
Dear Friends,
AFS is a unique, mission-focused, volunteerbased organization that helps people learn more about themselves, the world, and their responsibility as global citizens, to make the world a better place.
Many of us proudly declare, "AFS changed my life", a sentiment that resonates widely among AFSers across India. This powerful phrase is echoed not only by the students but also by our dedicated volunteers, the parents, and siblings who have hosted exchange students, and also the families who sent their children abroad Thousands of students have participated in the AFS programs and proudly shared how it transformed them. Host parents have welcomed students into their homes for years, travelled to visit their 'AFS children' abroad, attended their weddings, celebrated the birth of their AFS grandchildren, and much more. They, too, affirm, "AFS changed my life”.
They too, affirm,
“AFS changed my life”.
It is through each individual's outstanding collective efforts that we bring AFS and its mission to more people, families, communities, and especially into more schools across our nation. Expanding our AFS family is crucial, and it is your invaluable contributions your time, leadership, participation in events, sharing of connections, and storytelling that keeps AFS growing and creating global citizens that the world needs
We are aware of the critical need to break down barriers between people and cultures. Our AFS global network, which operates in over 60 countries across the world, is committed to developing globally engaged citizens, who can break down these rising barriers and help bring people and cultures from across the globe together
What connects our diverse community is a shared belief that we can, and do, make an impact; that living and learning alongside people from another country and culture is vital for understanding our differences and identifying all that we have in common.
Your contributions help make this, and more, possible. We need you. We thank you. And we celebrate the AFS Effect.
MY JOURNEY AS AN AFS VOLUNTEER
-Vasudha Tavag
My AFS journey has been quite long, spanning over a decade now. It all began when our daughter, Anishaa, was selected to participate in the AFS Jenesys Year Program in Japan. During her selection process, I was introduced to the volunteers. I also attended a local AFS celebration event in Bangalore, where I met enthusiastic volunteers of various ages, all deeply involved in the activities Their zest for life intrigued me, and I wanted to learn more about them.
This led us to host our first exchange program student after Anishaa's return. Our host daughter, Valentina, was a charming student from Italy and turned out to be a delightful addition to our family. It was a joyous and enriching learning experience From then on, there was no turning back
I have hosted many cultural exchange participants, children and adults alike, both for long-term and short-term programs. I have cherished every exchange experience. Due to my active involvement with the AFS community, I was nominated as President of the Bangalore Chapter. Leading the Chapter was like riding a roller coaster for four eventful years. There were highs of seeing things go smoothly, followed by lows of dealing with challenges such as exchange student issues, host family conflicts, and various health and safety concerns
There have been many interesting, frustrating, humorous, and heart warming moments a mixed bag of emotions that have helped me evolve into a more empathetic and capable person. It taught me that learning is a lifelong process.
nization isn't easy. Motivating volunteers who don't work for monetary motivation. Ensuring everyone feels included and valued was a significant rateful for the inspiration and guidance provided by our Chairperson, Angela Roye, as well as the unwavering support of all the volunteers in our Chapter and the staff members at the National Office, past and present.
While being recognized as the first "Outstanding Volunteer from India at AAI" and the "Best Volunteer of South India" were certainly highlights, the true essence of my AFS journey lies in the love and sense of belonging shared by volunteers and exchange students from all over Truly, AFS is my other family!
The true essence of my AFS journey lies in the love and sense of belonging shared by volunteers and exchange students from all over.

YES PROGRAM 2023-2024 SPONSORED STORIES
Exciting updates from our YES Program participants, highlighting their experiences in the USA and the accolades they’ve accomplished Let’s continue to follow along on their inspiring journey
Yashasvi | Indore Public School, Indore
I joined the world’s largest career and technical organization called FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). I took tests and interviews, and I was selected for Regionals. I won two medals one in the Securities and Investments test, which is considered the toughest because it’s a college-level exam, and another for a presentation on Business Management. Now, I’m selected for the State Level, which will be held in April 2024 in Tucson. Students who cleared Regionals from all over the USA will meet for the States, and the competition is very tough. But I’m confident and hopeful about making it to Nationals. I’m thrilled to share this proud moment with you!
Nithin | RDF Kalleda High School, Telangana
I've completed six months of my exchange, filled with adventures, cherished memories, and invaluable knowledge that I hold dear.
I am doing great academically, am learning violin and I even got an opportunity to perform in a concert. The major classes I took are government and history which are very helpful and important for my future aspirations. Engaging in clubs like JETS, Yoga, and Kiva has been enriching, and I'm eager to explore more, including trying out for the school volleyball team.
I have got the best host family whom I love dearly. They share many similarities with my natural family, spending quality time together through various activities, discussions, and travels to places like Columbus, California, Indiana, Wooster, etc. My host dad makes chicken wings for every American Football game which is considered as one of the American traditions We also celebrated festivals like Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Diwali, and family parties too.
Teaching Bhangra, participating in International Education Week, and embracing Indian culture have been highlights of my exchange. I'm eagerly anticipating more experiences in the remaining period.
A heartfelt thank you to AFS and the YES Program for this incredible opportunity.

I had an amazing time attending the wedding of my host family’s cousin. This was the first time meeting the extended family and they were so kind and welcoming! Talking with them also provided a great opportunity to practice Hindi. The day of the wedding itself was amazing and I had a lot of fun with my host sisters and cousins. I was really fascinated by the different rituals and celebrations surrounding the marriage.

On February 1st, my team and I traveled to Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, for the 2024 Ultimate Frisbee Mixed Gender Nationals. We faced off against the top 16 teams in the country. Although the games were extremely intense and exhausting, everyone enjoyed their time on and off the field to connect with the team and create long lasting and cherishable memories

The Jaipur literature festival teaches you about India in a completely new way. Walking through the spaces from one lecture hall to another, followed by music, food and books, you can truly notice a unique environment. Famous authors giving speeches about problems I have known for a long time but from different perspectives, new problems and their solutions or simply speeches. Not only was there a lot to learn about the books, but also about India itself for literature is another aspect of a culture.
