Designing Your Life Through Design Thinking in 2020 We just moved into a new decade full of hopes, dreams and visions. As we look forward to fulfilling our individual aspira ons in this new decade, it is crucial to look back and delve into our learning through moments of success and failures in 2019 that have incredibly shaped us. Do you feel you have lived and dreamed to the fullest? How do you feel about yourself through the lens of retrospec on?

As we dive into the new year, let's take this opportunity to reflect on our goals and dreams; and how we prefer to live our life. We are all busy going to work, raising kids, feeding our dogs, running a family, but is that it? Do you think the quality of our life is restricted? It is our responsibility to pursue improving the quality of our life by striving to discover new approaches and their impact. Design thinking is one such approach that is eagerly transforming our lives.

Tim Brown, Execu ve Chair of IDEO said, “Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innova on that draws from the designer's toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibili es of technology, and the requirements for business success.”

Now, don't just go on the 'business' aspect of the defini on. Let's try something new here. Think of yourself as a product. A product that needs to get be er and more efficient to keep up with the compe on. A product that needs to be designed crea vely so that it doesn't lose its value in the market. Now, you have seen yourself as a product, let's figure out the process you can apply to design your product (life) through design thinking: 1. Ask yourself these ques ons “Who am I as a person?”, “Where I am now and where I need to be?”. The idea is to Empathise and reflect on yourself. Observe how you are doing emo onally, professionally, and mentally. You need to do a 360-degree evalua on of your past, present, and future in terms of your goals and aspira ons in your life.

2. The next step is to Define your problems as a statement. This is the me for you to gather ideas and figure out the step ahead with the available resources.

Ask yourself the ques on “How might I…become physically fit?”, “How might I…learn a foreign language?”

3. The most important step is Idea on where generate ideas by brainstorming.

Your aim here is to think of all the ideas, good as well as bad, that can help you figure out various op ons that are on the table. Write down all!

4. Now, it's your turn to start seeing those ideas by Prototyping. If you do ABC, what will happen? If you choose XYZ, what will happen? It's a stage to test something in a small way and try it out before making a full investment. Start applying the ideas which you found are efficient, reliable and realis c. You aim to test all the ideas which you have come up with in the last stage. For example, take a month's plan of the gym and try it out before paying the yearlong fee. Rent a treadmill online for a month before commi ng to buy. Get trial versions of language learning apps or do a demo class at a language learning ins tute.

5. Finally, keep trying, keep itera ng your ideas. Remember that if you feel ABC ideas didn't work, you have many more in your idea on list. Tes ng and reitera ng will be on an ongoing process.

Remember, that design-thinking isn't a one- me process. You need to keep on empathising, defining your problems, idea ng, prototyping and tes ng and doing it all over and over again. This is the five-stage Design Thinking model proposed by the Hasso-Pla ner Ins tute of Design at Stanford.

You need to figure out what works best for you and the life you want to live. Turn challenges into ques ons. Brainstorm. Find solu ons. Take help from your family and friends who think well of you and involve them in the process, so that you can improve and innovate in 2020.

This supports the global movement to advance intercultural learning and global ci zenship educa on and AFS's mission to create CHANGEMAKERS! We are also proud to share that AFS India has reached the maximum number of students in the en re AFS Network!

January - December 2019 International Class Exchange Program AFS India does interna onal exchange program between two schools, one from India and other from any other AFS partner country involving a group of students from two or more classes. It provides the students opportunity to visit and experience history, culture, lives, customs and beliefs of a region different from ones own.

January - December 2019 Domestic Class Exchange Program With varied set of cultures in India, to make students culturally competent and to be able to adapt and cope up with cultural differences schools students are involved in Domes c Exchange Program. December 2019 Learning Module for Chapter Growth We are happy to introduce AFS India's Special Project for volunteer and chapter development called Learning Module for Chapter Growth. We proudly share that the training took place in 4 chapters in 2019, Gandhinagar, Nashik, Pune and Bangalore.

A special training agenda is prepared for each individual chapter a er reflec ng on the chapter's development, challenges and growth and also reflects the answers submi ed by volunteers in AFS India Volunteer Survey 2019. The survey is Chapter Specific and is shared with all volunteers. Post the training, Na onal Office in consulta on with Chapter Presidents devise a Plan of Ac on for 3-6 months with regular check-in webinars to track progress and take feedback of the volunteers on chapter health.

We are happy to share that about 170 volunteers got trained in 8 chapters with “What Every AFSer Must Know Training”. The trainings took place in Jodhpur, Anand, Delhi, Bangalore, Vadodara, Chennai, Nashik chapters. The training was facilitated by our wonderful brigade of ICL Trainers Ajay Mehta, Bhavya Arora, Chaitanya Gokhale, Karthikeyan Vaidyanathan, Najmuzzaman Mohammad, Nishita Mehta and Sarita Badhwar. The spirit of culture of Nashik and Varanasi was displayed in the month of September as the chapters hosted volunteers for the Regional Volunteer Exchanges.

To make the volunteers more involved in the vision of the organiza on, volunteer exchanges are conducted. 6 volunteers became part of the regional exchange program to Bangalore in the month of January.

4 volunteers were selected to go to Sri Lanka which is known for its cultural diversity as the country mixes modern elements with tradi onal aspects.

February 2019 Annual President’s, Board Members and Staff Meet This interac ve session aimed towards the genera on of innova ve ideas from the group of diverse minds. During the three day meet, various sessions were conducted to update, inform and share new updates with everyone. The cohort came up with great strategies that were followed in 2019.

February - March 2019 National Community Service Trip 2019 Commi ed to serve the community, 32 volunteers and few AFS India Staff members gathered at Gandhinagar for the yearly ac vity of Na onal Community Service. Various projects were successfully conducted by the par cipants to help schools in the local community.

March - April 2019 Annual Hosting Trip for 2018-19 Batch The Annual Hos ng Trip for 2018-19 Batch was organized from 31st March – 06th April 2019 to Southern India from Karnataka to Tamilnadu. Total of 47 host students par cipated in the same along with 04 Staff Members and 04 Travel Agent Representa ves. The places covered were Bangalore, Coorg, Chikmagulur, Puducherry, Mahabalipuram and Chennai with a stay in the 3 star hotel at each loca on.

April - March 2019 Thriving 30 Graduation Ceremony for Alumni Congratula on to Alumni for gradua ng a er a successful year being a part of pioneering alumni leadership pla orm - Thriving 30.

Alumni were felicitated at a grand awards ceremony amongst over 120 volunteers.

Thriving 30 is a pioneering ini a ve comprising of highly mo vated and commi ed alumni who worked on special projects and assignments from April 2018 to March 2019. This was a leadership pla orm for the Alumni where they have developed and portrayed their orchestra on quali es though out the year.

April 2019 AFS Member School Meet in New Delhi AFS India Member School Meet held on13th April 2019 in New Delhi. With the theme Connect, Collaborate & Co-create, AFS Member School Meet had successful par cipa on of 28 Principals from the five different regions - North, South, East, West and Central regions of schools from all over India. The meet featured sessions, discussion, icebreaking session to plan the Business Model that will help us in advancing our 3 impact goals: develop ac ve global ci zens, globalize schools & ins tu ons and expand access to intercultural educa on.

April 2019 2019 Annual Volunteer Meet To celebrate the spirit of volunteerism, Annual Volunteers Meet is held every year in April. The year 2019 remarked the successful comple on of AVM which was an event full of learnings through fun filled ac vi es with 146 par cipants including alumni, volunteers, educators, host families & partners from Sri Lanka, Nepal & Bhutan.

Along with the advocacy of Intercultural Learning and global ci zenship educa on, the mee ng also focussed on development and associa on with the Partner countries and other like minded organiza ons. There were awards in different categories like Best Volunteer, Best Alumni, Best Sending School, Best Chapter etc. Each volunteer was extremely mo vated a er receiving the award. Volunteers also a ended the presenta ons on different topics which was facilitated by 4 different speakers focusing on promo ng global ci zenship.

April 2019 Global Youth Service Day 2019 | Honour the Heroes AFS India successfully completed Global Youth Service Day 2019 in 12 chapters across the country with more than 250 volunteers and 600 students who par cipated in the ac vity. This year’s theme was - Honour the Heros. The volunteers created a day of Unity, Empathy and Service to pay tribute to those who got injured or lost their lives during any Indian war. The par cipants not only show an amusing spirit of patrio sm towards the na on suing this ac vity but also a empted to remember and salute the unforge able toil and dedica on of the brave hearted sons of Mother India. The spirit of patrio sm spread to everyone a ending the celebra ons. We are thankful to all the volunteers for coming forward and making this event a successful.

May 2019 Taj Visit and International Departures for 2018-19 Hosting Batch During the month of May, 51 students (2018-2019 Batch) along with 4 staff members visited The Taj Mahal with an aim of enabling the par cipants explore one of the best architecture and seven wonders of the world. The trip helped the students know more about the rich history of this World Heritage Site. Students gave an overwhelming response as it was a dream for most of them to see Taj Mahal. This trip was followed

YES Alumni across India ini ated and successfully par cipated in an online discussion to Honour Senator Lugar on 10th May 2019. The discourse of how impac ul YES Program is in the lives of YES Alumni and how the legacy of Senator Lugar has been life-transforming was first ini ated by alumni on online pla orms paying homage to his unfortunate demise. The discourse grew larger and alumni started expressing heartwarming stories of their interac on and associa on with YES, thereby leading to this 1Hour Webinar where 25 YES Alumni from across India joined.

AFS Process Training 2019

National Pre-Departure Orientation 2019-20 Batch

AFS India successfully conducted process training for 50 volunteers selected from 14 chapters. This training has very effec ve led to smoother opera ons of the chapters.

The Batch of 2019-20 young ambassadors came together to a end the Pre-Departure Orienta on Camp in Delhi. It was a 4 day camp with a total of 50 students par cipa ng in the same. This year, we have students going to USA, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark for a yearlong AFS program. Students from Belgium, France, Italy had a chance to meet the Officials from the Embassy.

June 2019 Kennedy-Lugar YES Re-Entry Orientation For 2018-19 Batch Group of 40 Kennedy-Lugar YES Batch 2018-19 students were welcomed at the Delhi airport on 15th June. The AFS India staff received them at the airport and the students stayed in Delhi ll 17th June evening and a ended a Re-Entry Orienta on.

July 2019 Hungary Educator Exchange Program AFS India educator exchange program offered the 3 educators from Indore, Kolkata and Vadodara a wholesome experience of intercultural learning in Hungary. The objec ve of the program was to make the educators globally competent and gain the skills through the exchange program to develop competence in their students. The 2 weeks program exposed the educators to the culture of the country, about the people, got to know the interna onal perspec ve in the classrooms and developed the understanding and apprecia on for other's culture and one's own culture.

July-August 2019 July 2019 National Arrival Orientation 2019-20 The Na onal Arrival Orienta on for 2019-20 batch was conducted from 3rd – 6th July 2019 in New Delhi. AAI Governance And Leadership Seminar

Asia Kakehashi Project Gateway Orientation 2019

Seminar on ten things every AFSer must know was conducted from 16th-18th August which was facilitated by Henrique Ramos.

The seminar was a ended by 13 Interna onal par cipants from Austria, Denmark, Japan, Belgium, Thailand, Malaysia, New Zealand, Indonesia and India. The seminar discussed and shared different approaches to governance and board structures in AFS organiza ons. It addressed concerte challenges faced by the boards including strategic planning, genera ve thinking, co-op ng Board members, and working with & evalua ng partner Directors.

AFS India conducted the Na onal Level Gateway Orienta on for the second batch of students for the pres gious Asia Kakehashi Project in New Delhi. Our hear elt gra tude to the Ministry of Educa on, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for this wonderful scholarship and opportunity to the students. It was a great experience to recruit students not only from India but also from Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal.

September 2019 August 2019 AFS India Alumni Sensitize 1,000+ youth to Resonate VOICE of Peace Voice of PEACE - a series of overwhelmingly successful peace building workshops across 6 ci es in India driven by the YES Alumni of India sensi zed over a 1,000 youth in Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Indore and Gandhinagar. The workshop was sponsored by the U.S Department of State Bureau of Educa onal and Cultural Affairs and implemented by AFS Intercultural Programs India under the GS18 Grant and the grant was won by AFS India on submi ng an alumni ini a ve proposal.

Mid Stay Orientation 2019-20 The Mid Stay Orienta on was conducted at 7 different ports: Ahmedabad, Baroda, Chennai, Delhi (YES Abroad), Delhi (Boarding School), Gandhinagar and Nabha in the month of September 2019. The students were divided into group (chapter wise) and they travelled to ports assigned to them. The students also had their Language Test I during the orienta on.

September 2019 Virtual Class Exchange Program Virtual Exchange Program is one of the finest means to u lize the technology as a way to foster intercultural dialogue between schools in different countries to interact and exchange ideas on global concerns.

AFS Member School Meet in Hyderabad

Three high school students from different ci es of Germany, spent their three months in Rajkot & Indore. At their End of Stay Orienta on on 5th September 2019, the students summed up their three months so beau fully- "We have grown and changed in our perspec ves in ways we never would have imagined. We are open to new ideas, can be er understand our family and friends and feel more confident about ourselves."

AFS India Member Schools Meet for Head of the schools was held on 14th September 2019 in one of the AFS India Member Schools, The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet.

The meet aimed to bring together schools and ins tu ons to ideate for maximizing impact. It was a ended by 48 Principals and Directors of the AFS Member Schools from 5 different regions of India.

National Language Camp for YES Abroad 2019

AFS Navratri 2019 at Ahmedabad

The Na onal Language Camp for YES Abroad 2019 was conducted from 14th to 17th September in New Delhi. There were 02 External Tutors hired for both Hindi (04 students) and Marathi (01 student) for the language learning of the student.

The Ahmedabad chapter organized AFS Navratri event 2019 from 04th to 07th October 2019. The event had the par cipa on of host students, volunteers and staff member. There were total of 34 host students from different parts of India who par cipated.

Network Strategy Meeting

AFS Global Conference 2019

AFS Network Strategy Mee ng was held in Montreal, Canada with the objec ve of bringing more focus on Network Strategy Process.

The Strategy Mee ng witnessed various meaningful conversa ons and solu ons.

With essence of crea ng smart goals and ac ve global ci zens, the AFS Global Conference 2019 networked more than 500 par cipants in October 2019. More than 50 par cipants from 70 countries were part of the conference.

October 2019 Amity International Model United Nation Conference 2019 (AIMUN) The Amity Interna onal Model United Na on Conference 2019 (AIMUN) was held from 16th to 18th October 2019 at Amity University Noida, India Campus. Around 12 of our host students par cipated in the event. The students also performed during cultural evening and had great learning and fun.

8th National Forum on Education for International Understanding & Roundtable AFS One Classroom Initiative

'Colorful Belt & Road: Dialogue with the Future' - The theme of AFS One Classroom Ini a ve facilitated in China in October. The forum offered opportunity to link 100+ schools from China and par cipa ng countries to facilitate dialogue, intercultural learning, and global competence acquisi on by ac vely engaging in online classroom exchanges.

November 2019 Culture, Cuisine and Curious Young Minds | Kamenori Program AFS India is proud and delighted to have hosted 8 young ci zen ambassadors and their Chaperone from Japan on the pres gious Kamenori program, funded by Kamenori Founda on from 2nd to 9th November 2019. The theme of the program focused on culture, heritage and cuisine and we're happy to have designed a combina on of these elements into the program. November 2019 Winter Italy Short Term Program 8 students from across the country par cipated in Winter Italy Short Term Program in November. 5 students from Emerald Heights Interna onal Indore, 2 from The Assam Valley School, Guwaha and 1 student from The Punjab Public School, Nabha. Being a scholas c program, AFS Italy has worked with the Italian schools in order to obtain the most suitable program of studies for these students.

November - December 2019 Global Peace Fest 2019 AFS India organized Global Peace Fest from 30th November to 1st December 2019 at Benne University. The intent of the Fest was to discover students of various talents who can establish a true and meaningful intercultural dialogue and become Peace Ambassadors. We witnessed par cipa on of 70 students and 10 educators from PAN India at the Na onal event.

The 1-week principal exchange program took place with Russia in the month of December. 2 Principals from Russia were hosted in 2 AFS India Member Schools- The Mann School and Abhinav Global School in Delhi. The program focussed on the understanding of the educa on system in Indian schools, func oning of the classrooms, to know about the culture which is different from one's own, visit to different cultural places, and to understand the diversity.

December 2019 Malaysia Educator Program 2 educators from Malaysia- Ms. Lee and Ms. Siththira Thevi visited India on an educator exchange program from 8th- 18th December.

The program was a pla orm for the educators to adapt, adjust and accept the diversity to the fullest. The educators were hosted in Mumbai Chapter. Various ac vi es were done including, introducing them with Indian cuisine, eco friendly prac ses by the students, visit to Child Care Centre, mee ng with NCERT Member, a ended World Educa on Forum inaugural func on of science exhibi on, school visits and so on.

December 2019 AFS Thailand Board Members Visit India On 11 th December 2019, AFS India Board Chair and Na onal Director were invited by AFS Thailand Board members for their mee ng with the Ambassador of USA in India.

We were delighted to host and have a very construc ve mee ng of Board Members of AFS India AFS Thailand on 12th December 2019 in New Delhi. The mee ng witnessed discussions on how to strengthen the rela onship and develop specially focused strategy between India and Thailand to increase our program impact.

Brainstorming sessions on how the strategies could be realigned and developed to grow the impact between Thailand and India were part of the mee ng. The discussion was led by AFS Thailand Board Chair –Mr. Angubolkul Sanan and AFS India Chair- Ms. Angela Roye.

Souvenirs were presented to each of the AFS Thailand board members, followed by presenta on on the journey and reali es of AFS India. The convening concluded with a luncheon. Our sincere most gra tude to the Board of AFS Thailand and India for the meaningful visit and pu ng the two countries in focus for future engagements.
