AFS INDIA TEAM
-Anuradha Singh, PR & Communications Manager

I joined AFS India with a thought and passion in my heart of wanting to do my bit in contributing towards making the world a better place for us and for the coming generations. Even in the short time I have been with AFS India, I can say with a sense of fulfilment that the journey so far has been a transformative experience for me. The organization’s commitment to fostering global citizenship through intercultural exchange programs is truly inspiring. It’s been enriching to witness how these initiatives provide valuable opportunities to the underserved yet deserving students, empowering them with 21st century skills that can help contribute to a more just, equitable, peaceful, and sustainable world.
From the very beginning, I’ve found myself immersed in learning and personal growth. Each experience has broadened my perspectives, allowing me to better understand the diverse cultures and challenges that shape our global society. This journey is not just about professional development but also about making meaningful contributions toward creating a just and peaceful world.

VOLUNTEER IMPACT STORY
-Deeba Qureshi, AFS Indore Chapter President
Voyages of Global Competence | Foundations Training
The Foundation of Intercultural Learning and Global Competence course has been a transformative experience, equipping me with essential skills and insights that are invaluable as I step into the role of President of the AFS Chapter in my city, Indore Through this course, I have gained a deep understanding of the complexities of cultural difference and the importance of empathy and openmindedness in fostering meaningful intercultural interactions.
One of the most significant lessons I learned is the value of active listening and effective communication These skills are crucial in a multicultural setting, where misunderstandings can easily arise due to diverse cultural norms and values. By honing my ability to listen actively and communicate clearly, I am better prepared to mediate conflicts and facilitate productive discussions within our chapter
The course also emphasized the importance of cultural self-awareness. Understanding my own cultural biases and perspectives allows me to approach intercultural interactions with greater humility and respect This self-awareness is essential in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all AFS participants, ensuring that everyone feels valued and respected.

Furthermore, the course highlighted the significance of global competence, which involves being able to navigate and thrive in an interconnected world. As the president, I will leverage this competence to promote global citizenship and encourage our members to embrace diverse perspectives This will not only enrich our local community but also prepare our participants to be effective leaders in a globalized world.
In summary, the Foundation of Intercultural Learning and Global Competence has provided me with the tools and mindset necessary to lead the AFS chapter with empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to fostering global understanding. These skills will be instrumental in building a vibrant, inclusive, and globally aware community.

CHAPTER IN SPOTLIGHT
AFS GANDHINAGAR CHAPTER

The AFS Gandhinagar Chapter organized a memorable outing to Indroda Nature Park, a zoo in the city, for the underprivileged children of Bal Sanskar Kendra Ashram Shala, administered by Shri Harsiddhi Seva Sangh, Gandhinagar. Bal Sanskar Kendra Ashram Shala was formed out of the spirit of compassion to serve and provide shelter, education, and care to the underprivileged children of the community.
Over 70 children, of age 6 years to 14 years, were enthusiastic and eager to learn about the animals and birds at Indroda Nature Park. It was their first time visiting a zoo, and they made countless memories while learning about the ecosystem. This community service aimed not only to educate the children about wildlife but also to promote a culture of respect, caring, and gratitude. The experience allowed the children to appreciate the community that supports them and recognize how fortunate they are to have a place that cares for them.
The dedicated volunteers ensured the event's success by managing all logistics, from picking the children up from their school to maintaining discipline throughout the visit. Volunteers found happiness in showering love and support to the children Though it was a task to manage the group and maintain discipline, the joy and smiles on the children’s faces made every effort worthwhile The children’s happiness was evident, and their joy added extra meaning to the day for all the volunteers involved.
The chapter president, Chiragsinh Raol, made tireless efforts in making the event possible, obtaining all necessary permissions from the GEER Foundation organization and managing the event. Volunteer Sweta Sadhu also contributed by securing transportation facilities for the children and former host family, Deepak Sadhu generously sponsored the snacks and refreshments.
The AFS Gandhinagar Chapter felt immense pride and happiness at the end of the day. The chapter extended a heartfelt gratitude to the DFO and RFO of the GEER Foundation for waiving the entrance fees for the children and to Yogi Bus Service for providing free transportation
They also extended their gratitude towards all the team members and AFS volunteers involved in the event: Keval Gajjar, Dhaval Khatana, Sweta Sadhu, Virendrasinh Vaghela, Jasmeet Kaur, Nilofar Rathod, Megh Buch, Janak Gajjar, Bhaumik Dhori, Saloni Pathak, and Tejashri Gajjar.

YEAR PROGRAM
Azeem Khan and Uttara Vorkady from India has successfully completed a 10-month study abroad program in Japan and France, respectively!
During their time abroad, they immersed themselves in Japanese and French cultures by living with host families and attending local schools. Their experiences underscored the global impact of cultural exchange, fostering empathy, understanding, and international harmony. Their journey exemplified the transformative power of cultural immersion, leading to deeper self-awareness and a broader worldview
My exchange journey in Japan was incredible, immersing me in a culture I had only known through anime. The experience taught me a lot about personal growth and cultural immersion. I learned to embrace imperfection through Kintsugi, find purpose with 'Ikigai,' and appreciate the present moment through Zen gardens. Exploring Bushido taught me about honor, integrity, and self-improvement.
In just three months, I mastered the Japanese language, bridging the gap to the anime world I loved. I also became the youngest chairperson of NUMUN 2024 at Nagoya University, one of Japan's top institutions. A significant moment was visiting Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park, which profoundly affected me. Witnessing the aftermath of the atomic bombings and the resilience of survivors underscored the importance of communication in promoting global peace and understanding.

Reflecting on my journey, I recognize the profound global impact of cultural exchange programs. These experiences go beyond personal growth, fostering empathy, understanding, and international peace. I'm deeply grateful to AFS India for this invaluable opportunity, which has enriched my life and broadened my horizons in ways I never imagined.
-Azeem Khan, Japan
Participating in this program was a profoundly surreal experience for me, and I'm immensely grateful for the decision. It allowed me to be my truest self, form lasting friendships, and immerse myself in the captivating beauty of France. The people were exceptionally kind and supportive, particularly in adjusting to my learning speed. My host family was the highlight, graciously introducing me to French culture while embracing my own.
Adapting to a new culture presented challenges, but determination made them manageable. Initially, I struggled with long school days and the language barrier, but these obstacles diminished over time. Loneliness was a hurdle at first, but it lessened as I bonded with my host family and made new friends. Exploring French cuisine, though unfamiliar, turned out to be a delightful adventure.
This experience significantly boosted my self-confidence and appreciation. My 10 months abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone, breaking down barriers and building my confidence. Parting with my host family and friends was difficult, but I returned with cherished memories and the love of the people I met, which I will treasure forever.
