As the UK gears up for another heatwave, we spoke to sleep expert Anne Marie Boyhan who shares her top tips to get a good night’s rest, despite the heat.
Cool the room: start with keeping blinds closed during the day, then ventilate the room after the sun goes down to drop the temperature. To help this process you can create ‘DIY air-conditioning’ by placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan to circulate cool air
Cool down your body too: workouts or lots of physical activity too close to bedtime are a no-go - it takes three hours for your core body temperature to come down, so avoid late-night exercise. Have a lukewarm (not cold!) shower or bath before bedwhile it may be tempting to have an ice-cold plunge, this can have the opposite effect, stimulating the body to warm up in response to an extreme temperature change. If possible, get your head or hair wet too and when you get into bed wear loose breathable pyjamas made from materials like organic cotton or bamboo
Avoid eating anything heavy or substantial 3 hours before sleep: the digestion process can heat your body, not to mention the impact potential reflux will have in keeping you awake. Instead try a small snack before bed to balance your blood sugar so it doesn’t drop in the night and wake you up. Think popcorn or half an apple with nut butter
Wind down as usual: routines signal the brain that it’s time to rest, helping to reduce cortisol and prepare the body for sleep. So, while it might be tempting to stay up until the temperature drops or until it’s dark, it’s important to keep your body in its consistent rhythm. Don’t vary your bedtime by any more than 90 minutes and take this quiz to find your ideal personalised bedtime routine
Block all light sources: Use blackout curtains, eye masks or even place rolled up towels to cover gaps in doors and seal off every bit of light. This is particularly important in the summer where the sun sets much later, and our bodies need to be somewhat ‘tricked’ into creating melatonin to support sleep. Blackout curtains also have the added benefit of helping to lower the temperature of the room
Switch to lightweight bedding and don’t make the bed: use a low tog duvet or light throw and opt for bedding made from natural fibres like cotton or bamboo. Leave the bed unmade during the day to promote airflow and avoid trapping heat and moisture that has accumulated the night before – this not only helps temperature regulation but is more hygienic to stop microbial and allergen growth
Declutter your sleep space: creating a calm, cool bedroom environment is essential to allow air to flow through the room and ease bedtime stress. A tidy space supports a settled mind which is key when sleeping in a heatwave – a challenge that is almost as much of a mental battle as it is a physical one
Don’t overthink it: Panicking about the heat and its impact on your sleep is a vicious cycle that will only make things worse. Try other mindful activities like listening to music or a podcast to take your mind off it and practice good sleep hygiene like doing gentle stretching, brain-dumping (the process of writing down all your worries and to-dos for the next day) and avoiding screens in the hours before bed
Avoid the booze: Despite what you might think, having a drink won’t make you sleep better. Alcohol is not a sedative - it fragments sleep and reduces REM so it’s best to avoid having an ice-cold pint - even if a trip to the pub may be tempting while the sun is shining!

In a world that never seems to slow down, quality sleep can feel like a luxury rather than a necessity. Yet, sleep is one of the most powerful, natural tools we have for managing anxiety. From reducing emotional reactivity to boosting our ability to cope with daily stress, unlocking the power of sleep can transform not only our nights but also our days.
The Sleep-Anxiety Cycle
When we’re anxious, it’s harder to fall asleep, and poor sleep, in turn, increases anxiety. This cycle can feel relentless. Over time, persistent lack of sleep affects how the brain processes thoughts and emotions, leading to an overactive fight-or-flight response and heightened sensitivity to stress. It's not just about feeling tired; it’s about how exhaustion clouds judgment, magnifies worries, and diminishes resilience.
The Brain’s Night Shift
During deep, restorative sleep, the brain sorts and files the experiences of the day, processing emotions and helping to resolve unhelpful thought patterns. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep plays a key role in emotional regulation by allowing us to process the day’s events in a calmer state. When we’re well-rested, we are better equipped to handle challenges, think clearly, and maintain perspective.
How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Can Help
This is where Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) can be a powerful ally. Unlike therapies that focus heavily on past problems, SFH helps you focus on your preferred future and small, achievable steps towards it. Combined with trance, a natural relaxed state similar to daydreaming, this approach can help calm a busy mind and improve the quality of your sleep.
During trance in SFH, the brain enters a state that mimics REM sleep, allowing you to process worries in a calm, controlled way. This can help lower your stress bucket (the accumulation of daily stressors) and promote clearer thinking. Over time, clients often notice they fall asleep more easily, experience fewer night-time awakenings, and wake feeling more refreshed.
While Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can support your journey towards better sleep and lower anxiety, there are practical habits you can start today:
• Establish a consistent bedtime routine. Try going to bed and waking up at the same time each day to regulate your body clock.
• Create a sleep-friendly environment. Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet, and limit screens before bed to reduce blue light exposure.
• Wind down with a pre-sleep ritual. Gentle stretching, journaling, listening to calming music or my free MP3 relaxation all of which can signal to your brain that it is time to rest.
• Focus on what went well. Each night, reflect on three things that went well during your day. This simple exercise, used within Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, can help redirect your brain’s focus towards positivity and calm before sleep.
• Practise relaxed breathing. Slow, deep breathing helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing the body’s stress response.
Reclaiming
Sleep is not a luxury; it is a foundation for mental well-being. By addressing anxiety with supportive approaches like Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and prioritising restorative sleep, you can break the anxiety-insomnia cycle and move towards a calmer, more resilient life.
It’s never too late to reclaim your nights and, with them, your peace of mind. Sleep well, and let your nights empower your days.
Want to unlock your own power of sleep? If anxiety and restless nights are weighing you down, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you find calm, clarity, and restorative rest. Get in touch today to book your first session and start your journey towards deeper sleep and brighter days.

In a world where we’re constantly told to hustle, manage perceptions, and fight for our place in people’s lives, the “Let Them” Theory offers a refreshingly radical alternative: Let Them.
Let them leave. Let them talk. Let them ghost you. Let them choose someone else. Let them misunderstand you.
At first glance, it sounds passive, even defeatist. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find a mindset rooted in deep self-respect, emotional maturity, and quiet strength. The “Let Them” Theory isn't about apathy; it’s about acceptance. It invites you to release your grip on things beyond your control and to reclaim the peace that comes with letting go.
Releasing the Need to Control
Human beings are wired to connect. But in our attempts to maintain relationships, it’s easy to fall into a pattern of over-explaining, people-pleasing, and emotional micromanagement. We chase closure. We try to correct misunderstandings. We desperately seek validation from those who are unwilling or unable to give it.
The Let Them Theory challenges that compulsion. It says: if someone doesn't appreciate you, if they walk away, or treat you poorly - Let Them. Not out of spite, but from a place of self-assurance. Their choices are not a reflection of your worth; they’re a reflection of their path, their mindset, and their capacity.
Letting people be who they are, without trying to influence, fix, or follow them can be incredibly liberating. It draws a clear boundary between what’s yours to manage (your own thoughts and actions) and what isn’t (the behaviour of others).
When you adopt the Let Them mindset, you move from reaction to observation. You stop trying to curate outcomes and start paying attention to patterns. Someone cancels plans repeatedly? Let Them. A friend grows distant? Let Them. The space they leave behind reveals what’s real and what was being forced.
This shift doesn’t mean you lack care or emotional depth. In fact, it means your care has matured. You begin to reserve your energy for relationships that are mutual, balanced, and nourishing.
The Power of Detachment
Detachment is not indifference, it’s clarity. The Let Them Theory helps you detach from the need to be chosen, to be right, or to be liked by everyone. It invites you to come home to yourself.
It’s not about ghosting others or cutting people off at the first sign of discomfort. It’s about discernment. It’s about knowing when to lean in and when to step back. When to engage and when to let the silence speak for itself.
Most importantly, it’s about trust. Trust that the people meant to be in your life will choose to be there. That love will not require chasing. That alignment doesn’t need convincing. At its heart, the Let Them Theory is not about others at all, it’s about you. It’s about recognising your worth, choosing your peace, and allowing life to unfold without force.
So the next time someone disappoints, disappears, or drifts away, pause. Don’t panic. Don’t chase. Don’t explain.
Just whisper to yourself, “Let Them.”
And watch what and who stays.

Ingredients
300g dried orzo pasta
Extra virgin olive oil
250g cherry tomatoes, on the vine
Balsamic vinegar
350g runner beans
½ bunch of chives (10g)
1 lemon
80g feta cheese
Method
A fresh, vibrant orzo salad bursting with sweet cherry tomatoes, crisp runner beans, and creamy feta – the perfect light lunch or sunny picnic star
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4. Cook the orzo in a pan of boiling salted water, according to packet instructions, until al dente. Drain, then dress in a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Place the cherry tomatoes on a baking tray with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper, and roast for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, feed the runner beans through a bean cutter. If you don’t have one, run a speed-peeler down each side of the bean to get rid of the stringy bits, then cut them at an angle into 3cm pieces. Cook the runner beans in a pan of boiling salted water for 2 to 3 minutes, until tender.
Discarding the vine, mash half the tomatoes with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and 1 tablespoon of balsamic. Finely chop and add the chives, zest in the lemon and its juice, to taste, and toss together with the orzo and runner beans in a bowl. Crumble in and stir through the feta, remaining tomatoes and rocket.

Golden, cheesy comfort meets silky zucchini in this irresistible baked pasta, a delicious alfresco dish family and friends will love
Ingredients
1 pound ziti pasta, or similar cut pasta
½ cup reserved pasta water
⅓ cup olive oil
4 medium zucchini squash, sliced into rounds or chopped
4 garlic cloves minced
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
3 tablespoons pesto
1 cup packed fresh basil, plus extra for topping
12oz ricotta cheese
12oz fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
Grated parmesan cheese, for serving
Method
Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4. Bring a pan of salted water to boil and cook the pasta according to the package directions. Be sure to reserve the ½ cup of the pasta water after cooking!
Heat a large skillet (you can do an oven safe one if you don’t want to transfer) over medium-low heat and add the olive oil. Add the zucchini, garlic, salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Cook, stirring often, until the zucchini cooks down and melts into the pan. Stir in the red pepper flakes. Stir in the reserved pasta water and the pesto. Stir in the fresh basil. By this time the pasta should be finished. You can either add everything to a baking dish or add it all to the skillet if it’s large enough.
Toss the pasta with the zucchini pesto mixture - whether it’s in the dish or skillet.
Add the ricotta cheese in scoops throughout the pasta. Toss it together until the ricotta coats most of the pasta. Add the fresh mozzarella - a few slices in the pasta and a few on top too.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, just until the cheese melts and everything comes together. Remove and serve immediately with a sprinkle of fresh parmesan and fresh basil for garnish.
Recipe from www.howsweeteats.com
Ingredients
2 medium peaches, chopped
Juice of 1/2 lemon
3/4 cup granulated sugar
8 digestive biscuits graham crackers
1 ½ cups pretzels
1 tsp ground cinnamon
Kosher salt
6 tbsp butter, melted
3/4 cup double cream
2 (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened
This pie is the taste of summer in every bite, with layers of juicy ripe peaches nestled in a cloud of vanilla cream on a buttery cookie crust. It’s cool, refreshing, and ready without ever turning on the oven
1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
Topping
2 medium peaches, thinly sliced
2 tbsp honey
Method
In a small pan over a medium heat, cook the peaches, lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, stirring frequently, until the peaches have started to break down but are still holding their shape and liquid is syrupy, 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how ripe your peaches are. Let cool.
Meanwhile, in a food processor, pulse the biscuits into crumbs. Add the pretzels and pulse until fine crumbs form with some small pieces remaining. Transfer to a medium bowl. Add cinnamon, a large pinch of salt, and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar and stir to combine. Add butter and mix until mixture resembles wet sand.
Press the mixture into a 9" pie dish . Refrigerate while you finish the filling. Using an electric mixer on medium-high speed, in a large bowl, beat the cream until stiff peaks form. Transfer to another bowl. In the same bowl used to beat the cream, beat the cream cheese and yogurt until smooth. Add the remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar and beat until incorporated. Add vanilla and a pinch of salt and beat to combine. Fold in whipped cream until just combined. Gently fold in cooked peaches until just combined.
Pour the filling into the base and spread in an even layer. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until well chilled, at least 4 hours or up to overnight.

This is a palette that adapts beautifully with the seasons: light and breezy in spring and summer, richer and more dramatic as we head into autumn.

Blood Brothers is a powerful British musical by Willy Russell that tells the tragic story of twin brothers, Mickey and Edward, who are separated at birth. One is raised in poverty by their birth mother, Mrs. Johnstone, while the other is brought up in wealth by the childless Mrs. Lyons. Despite their mothers' efforts to keep them apart, the boys meet by chance, become best friends, and swear to be "blood brothers" without knowing they are actually twins.
As they grow up, the differences in their social backgrounds shape their futures—Edward receives a good education and opportunities, while Mickey faces hardship, unemployment, and struggles with the law. The tension between their worlds deepens as they fall in love with the same woman, Linda, leading to jealousy and heartbreak. The story builds towards its haunting and emotional climax, exploring themes of class, fate, family, and the consequences of the secrets we keep.
Filled with memorable songs like “Tell Me It’s Not True” and “Marilyn Monroe,” Blood Brothers is a deeply moving musical that has captivated audiences with its blend of humour, heart, and tragedy, leaving a lasting impact long after the curtain falls.

Tucked away in a leafy corner of Canggu in Bali, is Chesa Canggu, just minutes from the famous Batu Bolong Beach, this design-led boutique hotel feels like a modern oasis, calm, considered, and unmistakably cool.
Step through the gates and the noise of the street fades into birdsong and the gentle splash of fountains. Rooms are minimal but thoughtful, with sunlit terraces, breezy neutral tones, and touches of local craftsmanship. There’s no flash here, just a sense of calm purpose that feels entirely in tune with the slower rhythms of island life.
At the heart of the hotel, two pools ripple beneath tropical canopies, flanked by birdcage-style cabanas and low-slung loungers. One offering a more sunny, social setup, the other tucked away in a quieter courtyard.
But Chesa isn’t a silent sanctuary. It's social when you want it to be, especially around the poolside birdcage cabanas or at THARA, the hotel's all-day kitchen and bar and bar where the iced lattes are on point, and the menu moves from nourishing Acai bowls at breakfast to indulgent fusion cuisine by dusk. It’s where surfers in linen shirts and barefoot founders tap on laptops over coconut cold brews.
The interior design and architecture is crisp and modern, softened with tropical landscaping and natural materials that reflect the surrounding environment. Stone, timber and rattan are balanced throughout the interiors, in clean lines and muted tones, offering a minimalist aesthetic that feels warm rather than stark. Think polished stone floors, floating wooden vanities, floor-to-ceiling French windows, and handmade ceramics and bespoke Balinese furnishings and artefacts to make each room unique.
It is also beautifully balanced. Close enough to the village's famous Old Man’s and The Lawn for sunset negronis, yet just far enough back to escape the soundtrack of scooters and live music. For digital nomads, it ticks every box, lightningfast WIFI, smart communal spaces, a state of the art, brand new gym, and rooms that double as restful remote work hideaways.
But it’s the sense of community that sets Chesa Canggu apart. Staff greet you by name, morning rituals form effortlessly, and even short stays take on the rhythm of routine. It’s the kind of place you arrive at for a long weekend and end up extending 'just a few more days'.
With rooms starting from £90 per night, Chesa Canggu offers considered luxury at an accessible price point, a rare find in a town where style often comes at a premium. It's not trying too hard, and that’s exactly why it works.

On the tranquil northern shores of Windermere, where morning mists rise like soft breath over the lake, Langdale Chase sits quietly, carrying within its grounds a secret that speaks to the soul of the Lake District. Beyond its sweeping lawns and timeless stone façade lies the boathouse, a place of reflection and gentle adventure.
The fully restored 1896 boathouse is still considered one of the finest boathouses on Windermere. Built of Brathay Blue stone, it houses a beautiful bedroom above the water, with a private jetty, freestanding copper tub, and an outdoor copper hot tub. Completely secluded, it is the dream setting for a romantic break. Offering views across Windermere that change with every season from the blush of dawn on water like glass, to sunsets that set the fells alight with pinks and ochres. On cooler days, the boathouse becomes a cocoon, while in summer it transforms into a bright lakeside retreat, doors open wide to let in the sounds of water lapping against the jetty.
It is here that the hotel has its own 1920s motor yacht, Albatros. This beautiful motor yacht brings a Lake Como elegance to the Lakes. Couples can enjoy champagne sunset sailings, daily cruises across the lake, or you can book her for private celebration charters.
From the water, Langdale Chase looks even more enchanting, standing proudly amongst its tall trees, the gardens roll down to meet the lake’s edge in gentle waves of green. With 30 individually designed rooms and suites, within the main hotel, many with slipper baths and sweeping lake views, plus an art deco bar, a two AA Rosette restaurant, cinema room, wild swimming, indulging in the Swallows and Amazons-inspired afternoon tea, served on the terrace beside the very waters that inspired Arthur Ransome’s novel.
For many guests, a private cruise aboard the Albatros is the highlight of their stay. Whether you choose a morning sail with coffee steaming in hand, a lazy afternoon with a picnic prepared by the Langdale Chase kitchen, or a sunset trip with a glass of English sparkling wine, the Albatros offers a connection to Windermere that is deeply personal and beautifully simple.
Nightly rates at Langdale Chase start from £440, including breakfast.

Instructions for Heartbreak by Sarah Handyside
What if heartbreak came with a manual?
It starts with a late-night knock on the door. Dee, Liv and Rosa share a flat in south London, while Katie lives close by with her boyfriend. But, when Katie’s nine-year relationship ends – suddenly and brutally – she turns up on their doorstep with no idea what to do next, or how to do anything after spending so long with her life entwined with someone else’s. Out comes the martini shaker (an old, well-washed gherkin jar) and, with an unused sketchbook, an idea. They’ll make Katie the handbook that she needs to process her heartbreak and start rebuilding her life. There are notes on tears, hangovers and roast chicken, scribblings about music, new bedding and pure, white-hot rage.
But Katie is not the only one nursing a broken heart. Rosa is a hopeless romantic, despite still reeling from her ex’s infidelity. Scarred by her ex’s parting words, Dee is committed to being commitment-free. And while Liv knows that breaking up with her girlfriend was what she wanted, she can’t help but wonder if she did the right thing.
Tested by big life changes, even the closest friendships can fray – could the heartbreak handbook they intended for Katie contain the words they all need to hear.
