A Quick-Fix for Your Negativity Bias

Make it Magnificent available on Amazon We’re all wired with a built-in negativity bias, a survival mechanism inherited from our ancestors, who needed to remember dangers more than delights to stay alive.

That’s why criticism sticks longer than compliments, and why a single bad moment can overshadow an otherwise good day. While it once kept us safe, this bias now quietly sabotages our happiness, relationships, and mental health. Fortunately, there’s a quick mental “reset” that can help: the 3-to-1 positivity ratio.

The 3-to-1 Trick

For every one negative thought, experience, or emotion you have, counter it with three positive ones. This isn't about toxic positivity or pretending everything is fine. It’s about consciously tipping the mental scales toward balance and resilience.

Catch the Negative Thought

“I’ll probably mess up this presentation.”

Pause and Reframe with Three Positives

“I’ve prepared thoroughly and know my material.”

“I’ve delivered well before under pressure.”

“Even if I stumble, I can recover—it’s human.”

This isn’t denial. It’s putting things in perspective. You

acknowledge the worry, but you intentionally build up the other side of the story. Over time, this becomes a habit that reshapes how you experience setbacks.

Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson, who popularised the 3-to-1 ratio, found that people who maintain at least three positive emotions for every negative one flourish, they’re more creative, resilient, and socially connected. This ratio helps rewire your brain to notice the good, not just the threats.

Quick Practices to Build the Habit

Gratitude Snapshots: At the end of the day, write down 3 things that went well or that you appreciated, even small ones.

Positive Savouring: When something nice happens, pause for 15–30 seconds and really soak it in. This helps encode the memory.

Flip the Script: When a negative thought intrudes, challenge it by finding three possible positives, even if they’re small or hypothetical.

You don’t have to erase negativity to feel better, you just have to balance it. The next time your mind spirals into worst-case scenarios or harsh self-talk, remember: 3 good thoughts can tip the scae.

Why Coastal Walks Help Mend a Broken Heart

When heartbreak hits, it’s not just emotional, it’s physical. A broken heart can feel like pressure in the chest, heaviness in the limbs, or an ache that settles deep in the bones. While there's no instant cure for heartache, nature has long been one of the most reliable sources of comfort and few places are more soothing than the coastline.

Coastal walks offer a kind of therapy that no conversation or distraction can replicate. The combination of movement, natural beauty, and the rhythm of the sea creates a gentle, healing experience that works on every level, body, mind, and soul.

The Sea Reflects and Softens Emotional Pain

There’s something about staring out over a vast, open sea that puts pain into perspective. The horizon stretches endlessly, quietly reminding us that life goes on and that our grief, though real, is temporary.

The ocean doesn’t demand anything. It lets you cry without judgment, rage without consequence, and breathe without explanation. Its tides echo your own emotional rhythms, sometimes calm, sometimes turbulent and yet always moving forward.

Walking Heals the Body, and With It, the Heart

Walking, especially in nature is proven to reduce stress hormones like cortisol, lower blood pressure, and boost feel-good chemicals like endorphins and serotonin. These are the very systems thrown out of balance when you’re grieving.

A study published in Health Psychology found that even a 20-minute walk in a natural setting can reduce rumination, the repetitive negative thinking that keeps heartbreak looping in our heads. When you're walking by the sea, you’re not just moving physically, you’re slowly moving emotionally too.

Blue Spaces Calm the Nervous System

While "green spaces" like forests and parks are well-known for their healing powers, research shows that “blue spaces” such as lakes, rivers, and oceans may be even more powerful when it comes to calming the nervous system and promoting mental clarity.

The sound of waves, consistent and rhythmic has been found to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for rest, digestion, and relaxation. It's no surprise so many sleep and meditation apps mimic this sound. When you're walking beside the real thing, your body can’t help but begin to unwind.

Nature Helps Us Reconnect with Ourselves

Heartbreak often leaves us feeling unmoored, like we’ve lost our place in the world. Coastal walks invite us to reconnect, not just with nature, but with ourselves.

The solitude of the coastline creates space to hear your own thoughts more clearly, to let emotion rise and fall without interference. You might find yourself remembering who you were before the heartbreak or imagining who you can become after it. Nature doesn’t rush your healing. It simply holds space for it.

Beauty Reminds Us That Joy Still Exists

When your heart is heavy, noticing beauty might feel impossible, or worse, irrelevant. But this is exactly why it matters.

The sparkle of sunlight on water, the flight of seabirds, the salty air on your skin, these moments of sensory beauty don’t erase pain, but they coexist with it. They prove that even while you’re hurting, the world still offers you small moments of wonder.

Psychologists call this "awe therapy": the experience of something vast and beautiful can shift your mindset, making your problems feel more manageable and your future more hopeful.

You don’t have to walk with purpose or pace. You don’t need answers or closure. You just need to put one foot in front of the other, let the sea do what it does, and allow yourself to feel everything.

Coastal walks don’t fix broken hearts. But they hold the pieces gently, until you’re ready to start putting them back together.

Spring Clean Your Health

With the awareness of ultra-processed foods now coming to the forefront, there is a growing awareness that not all 'healthy supplements' are as beneficial as they appear. Many supplements contain various additives such as fillers, glues, binders, preservatives, and colourants, which can impact their overall health benefits. It’s important to read between the lines of ‘ultraprocessed’ supplements like liquid collagen and tablet formulations, to ensure you’re receiving what you pay for.

We’ve become pretty good at spotting unnecessary additives in our food and beauty products, but when it comes to checking how 'clean' our supplements are, do we really know what's good for us? Pharmacist and Co-Founder of INGENIOUS collagen & wellness supplements, Pupinder S. Ghatora, tells us the top 5 ingredients to avoid.

Magnesium Stearate

Magnesium stearate is simply a ‘flow agent’ that is used to facilitate smooth processing in factory machinery and within the body. It serves no health benefits and will simply cause the supplement to pass through you without being absorbed. Brands often use it to bulk out supplements so that they can reduce the amount of the more expensive active compound. In large amounts it can even negatively affect the gut microbes in your digestive system.

Carrageenan

At first glance, you’d think carrageenan, AKA Sea Moss, is beneficial for health as it’s derived from seaweed. It’s often found in gummies and liquid supplements as a gelling agent, stabiliser and thickener. However, research indicates it can have adverse effects on digestion, triggering inflammation, ulceration, and elevating blood sugar levels while exacerbating glucose intolerance. Similarly, vegetable gums like Guar and Xanthan exhibit similar properties and can also lead to digestive disturbances.

Titanium Dioxide

You’ll often see titanium dioxide listed on ingredient lists, also identified as E171 on labels. Worryingly, research has suggested that the ingredient may have a carcinogenic effect. Although the European Commission has banned its use as a food additive, this does not extend to the UK or US, so it’s still widely used as a white pigment and colour enhancer in supplements.

Talc

Talc has garnered attention recently due to concerns about contamination in industrialgrade talc, which can include impurities and even asbestos. Surprisingly, it's used as both an anti-caking agent and a tablet brightener, mostly present in tablet supplements.

Sweeteners and Sugars

Sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, and sucralose are all artificial sweeteners known to cause gut issues when overconsumed. They're not limited to fizzy drinks and 'diet' snacks but are also present in gummies, drinks, and powders. Sucrose, dextrose, and glucose syrup add sweetness to gummy or liquid supplements and, as we know, increased sugar intake has been linked to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Aspartame is another artificial sweetener found in many supplements and so called ‘diet’ food and drinks. Although some studies confirm it is safe, there are new emerging studies showing that it can have a negative impact on our body’s oxidant/antioxidant balance, which has a knock effect on many of the body’s functions.

Method

Ingredients

320g sheet of Ready Rolled Shortcrust Pastry

4 eggs

100g gruyere cheese, grated

100g mature cheddar cheese, grated

130ml milk

1 tsp Dijon mustard

50g Opies Mini Silverskin Onions, halved

8 Asparagus Spears, ends trimmed

2 slices Parma Ham, ripped into largeish pieces

Pre-heat oven to 200°C / 180°C fan / Gas 6. Unroll the pastry sheet and drape over a flan dish or shallow tin approximately 25cm in diameter. Trim off any excess pastry that overlaps the edges. Line the pastry with baking beans and bake blind for 15 minutes or until the pastry is lightly golden, then remove to cool slightly.

In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs then add the gruyere, cheddar and milk, reserving a small handful of each cheese for later. Mix well and season to taste. Pour the egg and cheese mixture into the pastry shell, then scatter over the cocktail onions and cherry tomatoes.

Top the mixture with the asparagus spears, arranging in any way you like. If they don’t quite fit, dice up the ends and sprinkle the chopped pieces over the quiche too, along with the spears. Top with the Parma ham and reserved cheese and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and set in the middle.
