CUP TOURNAMENT NEWS

Despite the early setback UQ pushed hard and Koach Kosta demanded more quality in the second half. After the break Annerley came out hard, with Kate Deegan heading in off a cross and Bec Sweeney scoring twice round the keeper on either side of a Laura Blue header from a corner. The only blemish on Annerley’s copybook was an unfortunate chip over club captain and part-time banana Gemma Layfield. An accomplished all-round performance sees Annerley travel to Peninsula Power in a semi-final clash yet to be scheduled. - Sean Jenkins

Round 14 vs The Gap. Unfortunately this was a poor performance by us, although we had 5 times more shots than the Gap. In the end we were unable to capitalise and lost the game 1-0 from a Gap free kick. Round 15 vs Logan. This game was filmed by Football Brisbane as the weekly feature match. Leading up to this game we managed to train as a team, and as a result played a much more polished 90mins walking away 4-1 victors. (Goals – Donna Smith x2, Laura Blue, Jaymee Birleson). Round 16 vs UQ. A game of two halves. Our first half was quite poor but our second half performance was much better. Unfortunately, we were unable to put more goals away despite our chances. Luckily we walked away 2-1 winners. (Goals – Donna Smith x2) Round 17 vs Easts. A close contest on a chilly Friday night, but we were able to flex our muscles when needed, winning 2-0. (Goals – Chiara Marconato, Laura Blue) Round 18 vs Olympic. Poor weather conditions and a soaked field didn’t help our performance against our local rivals. Despite having multiple chances on goals in both halves, we let another victory slip through our fingers. Draw 1-1 (Goal – Laura Blue)

The Reserves have been on a consistent run of form in the past month, picking up valuable points against some quality opponents. The squad have been implementing individual and tactical game plans successfully ever since the fixture against The Gap. Coming off a disappointing loss against them in the first round, we found out feet very early in the game and dominated for the majority of the game coming away with a 5-0 win. The following week we were away at Logan Lightning who are one of our main rivals in the race to fourth place. In what was an extremely important game, we put in arguably our most complete footballing performance of the year with a 3-1 win. UQ visited in the next round, bringing their very direct style of football. Unfortunately, as happened in the first round, we were undone by their ability to play in behind to their extremely quick 9 and 10. In what was a blip in our recent form we went down 4-1. In Round 17 we met Easts which proved to be a tricky away fixture. We were up 2-0 at half time after dominating possession and with multiple saves by backup goalkeeper Brittany Madden. Shannon’s long range rocket goal midway through the second half was just enough to secure the win after Easts clawed back a couple of goals. Final score 3-2. Last week saw the return of our local rivals Olympic. After playing poorly for 70 minutes, we finally started to implement some of our movement patterns in the final third and came away with a comfortable looking 3-1 win.

CITY 5 recap

CITY 3 recap Round 11 brought with it a feisty encounter for Annerley's City 3 Women's team, as they took on Souths United at Elder Oval. Souths needed an 86th-minute, long-range equaliser to scrape a 3-3 draw against the excellent Annerley side, with Chrystal Hopkins bagging a brace and Ella Austin finishing a fine play for the home team. The following fixture pitted Annerley against a tough Capalaba side. The scrappy away game featured two fine Carly Stuart goals, and ended 2-2.

Annerley faced fellow finals contenders Tarragindi Tigers in round 14, and put to rest the memory of the 8-2 thrashing they received earlier in the season. The only goal of the game was scored by the fleet-of-foot Chrissa Stillianos, who showed great composure to find the back of the net after latching onto a sublime through ball.

Stillianos showed her scoring nous again the following week when the team travelled to play Ipswich Knights. Although the game finished 1-1, Annerley fought until the final whistle, and will look to show that same courage this week against a tricky Springfield side.

Draw

The Div 5s continue to impress with their development and enjoyment levels every week, despite some up and down results. A win at Toowong after being 2-1 down was a highlight, and the ladies have been unlucky to fall to defeats against Carina, Westside, and North Brisbane, despite dominating large parts of each fixture. The ladies are looking forward to finishing the season strongly, starting with this weekend's fixture against Easts.

BRISBANE WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE Sunday 24th July

Elder Oval, Greenslopes 5:00pm (Reserves at 3:00pm)

This game is the feature match for our annual Women’s Day. It ‘s always a great day, and hopefully we can take the three points to top it all off. The last 5 games have been difficult for us with a number of injuries making it near impossible to train as a BWPL team. Unfortunately, this has shown in our performances. Although we have not been playing badly, we have certainly not been playing at the level we set ourselves. Capalaba are arguably the strongest team in the competition on paper, and we need to be at our very best to win. Both our BWPL and ressies are missing quite a few players due to a music festival, so we need to dig deep, and do what we can to grind out a result. - Anthony Costa

MEN’S RESULTS Capital 2 recap

Capital League 2 Reserves

The Annerley Capital 2 boys continue to go from strength to strength in recent weeks and have extended their unbeaten streak to 11 matches. Round 16 saw the boys in blue travel away to The Gap. The lads put in an inspired performance, pulling off one of the greatest wins and overcoming the league leaders 2-1. In round 15, Annerley hosted league cellar dwellers, Redcliffe PCYC. Despite Annerley jumping out to an early 4-0 lead; Redcliffe showed that they are a much improved outfit and jagged two second half goals. Final score 4-2. Round 17 saw the visit of Western Spirit to Elder Oval. A classy brace to Italian heart throb, Diego Barbieri saw Annerley sitting comfortably. A late spirit goal led to a tense final few minutes but Annerley managed to see the game out 2-1.

In the most recent round, the lads took on Oxley. Annerley came out looking to dominate proceedings but found it difficult to break down a stubborn Oxley defence. Oxley got the lead with a counter attack goal against the run of play. Annerley continued to throw everything at Oxley and were finally rewarded with an equaliser late in the game. Ressies recap The Capital 2 Reserves continue to play good football, recording strong wins against teams high and low on the ladder. In recent games the team beat Redcliffe PCYC 4-2, ran away with the points against Western Spirit 5-0 and again with Oxley 6-0. The only slip up was against top-of-thetable Gap FC going down 5-1. Reserves coach Roberto, is working the boys hard and using all his experience to help guide the reserves to a 2nd place finish. Rob's renegades roll on. The Reserves welcome back Cameron Osborne who has instantly impressed head coach Robert, with his ability to find the back of the net. Things are starting to click for the Reserves side as they continue to take the points. Things are looking promising as we hit the pointy end of the season - Anthony Costa

City league recap With some great wins lately City 2 have climbed up the ladder and with 3 games remaining, have a great chance to make it to play offs.

We totally outplayed Centenary Stormers in round 12, winning 4-1. The evergreen striker (that only plays 10 minutes each half) managed to score an easy hat-trick. We lost our round 13 match to Mt Gravatt after 2 of our players were sent off. The final score was 2-0. Against Taringa the following week we showed our true spirit, fighting from 1-0 at half time. We finished the game strongly and won it 2-1. Last Friday in round 15 we came up against Southside Eagles. Once again, with the golden touch from this season's top goal scorer, we won 1-0. Our last 3 games are against top 3 sides (Pine Hills, UQFC & Logan). Bring it on. Let's make finals!!! - Adnan Muratovic

City 3 is still having consistency issues! After a disappointing 3 consecutive losses we did however string a four game unbeaten run starting with a 4-1 home win over Grange on June 10th. Murray Wade and Tadgh Keane scored in the first half and goals from Koki Obara and Big Al Stewart wrapped it up after the break. North Star were the visitors on Friday June 24th in a game that finished in a 2-2 stalemate, Connor Fountain and Chris Jones were on the scoresheet in a tight game. Another 2-2 draw at home against East’s on July 1st in a game we should have won comfortably. Dave Careno gave us an early advantage, but we relied on another late goal from Chris Jones to salvage a point.

We faced East’s again the following week in the catch up game at Heath Park. It was our first afternoon kick off in quite a while and the lads coped well running out impressive 5-2 winners thanks to a brace by Dave Careno and further goals from Graham Horgan, Darcy Garlick-Kelly and Chris Jones. Unfortunately the “mini run” came to a halt on July 15th when we went down 0-1 at home to Mitchelton. It was a very tight game and not to get something after 90 minutes was harsh. - Eamonn Turner

"Anyone can deal with victory. Only the mighty can bear defeat.". While the legion have seen a noticeable improvement on their mid season form, results are still not falling their way. They have only managed 1 win in the last 4, but have had close matches against Toowong and top of the table Mitchelton. With no real hope for finals football, the legion will attempt to play the role of spoilers, ruining other teams hopes and dreams. Ahead, the legion face a tough trip to UQ this Sunday, before home matches against Grange and Peninsula and finish the season with an away trip to Peninsula. Despite the poor form, Monteverde has assured me that I have the full support of the committee. Elder Oval, Annerley 1 6:00pm (Reserves at 4:00pm)

After a slight slip up against Oxley last week (1-1 draw), we now need to win all 4 of our last games to have chance of promotion. The lads continue to work hard and are not taking anything for granted. The work ethic and respect they have shown since I started as head coach, is fantastic. The team have gone 11 games undefeated, which is just amazing. That said, we will not rest on our laurels! We will keep pushing and working as hard as we can. Ipswich will be out to beat us, so we need to show them respect and play well in this must win game. - Anthony Costa July ‘16
