HAWAIIAN PARTY!

AFC knows how to party. Checkout some of our photos from the night in this edition!

#AnnerleyFC

A LETTER FROM AFC You may have recently noticed the Boogie Bus parked at the AFC oval – we want to wish Izaak and his family all the best on their trip up the east coast as he gives his middle daughter a break from hospital life. We’re sending all of our positive vibes their way!!

Yes, you saw that right! Brisbane City Council are doing some long awaited upgrades at our beloved Senior Club House - the scaffolding isn’t just for show. The list of works taking place include:

- restored roofing and gutters to keep the rain out. - new security lights to increase safety in the evening. - new security gates to restrict the car park and enable use when required. - electrical work within the club house.

We’re confident that these upgrades will breathe some life back into the clubhouse and help us find further funds to continue the improvements.

Did you hear about our Hawaiian Party?

HAWAIIAN NOT? In the spirit of raising some sweet do-rayme for AFC Senior Football, the social committee put on a fantastic party on the 30th April. Everyone donned their best Hawaiian shirts AKA “party shirts”, got lei’d and drank punch, because Hawaiian not? Also word on the street is that we have some reigning beer-pong champions on our hands! A huge thank you to everyone who came along and to those who organised the night – it was a huge success!

WOMEN’S RESULTS BWPL Recap Round 8 catch up match saw us travel to Capalaba in a match that would take us to top of the table if we managed a win and also be filmed by Football Brisbane as the weekend feature match. The first half was a very scrappy affair from both teams. Neither team managed to create many clear-cut chances. The only goal came from a 30-yard screamer from Capalaba, which took us into the break at 1-0 down. The second half we were able to execute our game plan and we dominated scoring 3 goals and creating a number of chances to see us jump to the top of the table and walk away with a 3-1 win. Goal scorers: Laura Blue x2 and Alice Foster

This was a game we controlled from start to finish, creating a number of chances and getting over 20 shots away. However, we were not anywhere near our clinical best and did not capitalise enough on the chances we created. We were able to walk away 3-0 winners, but were disappointed that we weren’t able to really put Toowong to bed. If we want to realistically compete for the premiership, we need to be more clinical in our final third. Goal scorers: Donna Smith, Jaymee Birleson and Annika Coyne. -Anthony Costa Premier League 24/04/16 Annerley FC 2

Round 9 saw us welcome Souths United to Elder Oval. Going into this game we knew it would be a tough match especially to perform well against a very youthful Souths team. It wasn’t our best performance, however even though we were missing leading goal scorer, Donna Smit,h we managed to control the game for the most part and walk away 2-0 winners. Goal scorers: Lareena Meiklejohn and Chiara Marconato. In round 10 we travelled to premiership favourites, Mitchelton, in what was a top of the table clash. We went into this game with a very poor week of preparation and with in form player, Laura Blue out through injury. That said, we still had a strong team, even with a number of reshuffles. Mitchelton have set the benchmark this year, and they certainly showed us that we need to be better if we want to compete for the premiership. Mitchelton dominated the entire first half, going into the break 2-0 up. We made some changes in the second half, and performed much better, matching Mitchie for the full 45 mins. However, for the first time this year, we weren’t able to trouble the scorers going down 2-0. Round 11 was then upon us as we played host to table dwellers, Toowong.

City 3 Fixture 6 of the season saw Annerley's City 3 Women defeat Ipswich Knights 2-1 at Elder Oval. In the first round of the City League Cup, an Annerley team made up of City 3 and 5 players, hosted the City 1 team from Easts. The home team remained cool and calm (except for Chops) to win the penalty shoot out 4-2 after a hard fought 90 minutes ended 1-1. The high-flying 3s were brought back to earth in fixture 7 when they drew 2-2 to wooden spoon contenders Springfield United. Round 8 got Annerley back to winning ways with a 5-2 win over Bethania Rams in a game that featured a sublime team goal and some great individual efforts. The City 3s are hoping to extend their good run of form in their next game against 2nd-placed Ipswich City. – Alex Winters

Chelsea Smith and Jess Moltzen scored one apiece to share the Golden Boot lead for our team, while Sasha Webster scored her first ever goal in just her second game. -Steve Chapman City League 5 Gold 16/04/16 Annerley FC 0

City 5 In round 7, Annerley hosted the top-of-the-table Tarragindi Tigers, and came away with an impressive 1-1 draw, Emma Scott scoring for the hosts. We then hosted Toowong who took a twogoal lead into halftime, only for Annerley to mount a trademark comeback to draw 2-2, Jess Moltzen recording her first two goals of the season. The team travelled to Westside in Round 9 and had a rare off day, succumbing 4-2 with Chelsea Smith and Ella Austin scoring for us. The most recent result saw us host North Brisbane in a highly entertaining 3-3 draw. The girls were tremendous in coming back from 2-0 down to hold a 3-2 lead until a 25m strike into the top corner with 5 minutes to go saw the points shared.

BRISBANE WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE Saturday 21st May

Annerley, Elder Oval 6:15pm (Reserves at 4:00pm)

This Saturday we extend a big welcome to our northern rivals, Pine Hills, in what is a very important match for both teams. For Pine Hills, a win will see them overtake us on the ladder and jump into the top 4, whereas a win for us will see us build a small gap between Pine Hills and ourselves, to remain in 3rd spot. Every game we play against Pine Hills over the past 2 years have been crackers, and I expect no difference for this game. We are missing a few players which doesn't help but we will still field a strong team – thanks to the depth at Annerley. We know we have a strong team, but we are under no illusions as to the danger that Pine Hills possess with their lightning quick front 3 and ever dangerous Sarah Fuller and Fern Doyle combination. If we can be organised and structured defensively, we will be in with a good shot at walking away with a win. That said, we will need to be at our best and will need to be a lot more clinical in the front third than we have been the last 2 weeks.

Capital league 2 reserves We held our shape extremely well against the quick, young Brisbane Force coming away 6-1. Goals: Benny and the Jets Raftery (2), Marc Brownlie (2), Ricardo Surrentino (1), Dave the Bulgarian (1). A tough game that was a touch underrated by many. Slacks Creek was the first team to take points off the Gap who are also the top team and had a 10 – 0 record. We were made to work hard and had quite a few players out through injuries and suspension yet we came away with a 2-0 win. Goals: Marc Brownlie, Benny & the Jets Raftery. Our game against Park Ridge was another where we had important players unavailable through injury and suspension. We should have scored another 3 or 4 but their keeper was brillant. Goals: Benny & the Jets Raftery, Ricardo Surrentino, Jono Hansen. I’d quickly like to mention, well done to the Ressies as we consolidated our second position in the ladder. It’s not always the easiest thing to play for Ressies but the squad is committed and the depth is there. Also whenever they are called upon to first team duty they all perform extremely well. Finally, well done to Anthony Costa who is doing an excellent job coaching both the Men’s and Women’s first teams with distinction: Costa’s Crusaders march on.

City League 2 Round 7 has taken us all the way up to the Pine Hills for a 6:30pm kick off on Friday night. After a quick warm up in the white kit, we changed into the blue (sending the sweaty kit back to Rob, claiming it was clean - JT's idea). We played well against one of the top sides in the league. In the 70th minute we were 2- 0 up. The only reason we were able to be in the game until late in the second half was thanks to some brilliant saves from our newly uncovered talented keeper (Matt Steinhardt). Revvin Seedhouse smartly intercepted the ball from a defender and easily put one behind the keeper for 1-0. The Afghan Fox (aka Parviz) brilliantly crossed the ball in from the right hand side (his first good cross all year). All that was left was for ME to find some fitness and run a good 45m in a straight line against some handy 20 year old athletes and meet the cross with my non kicking foot and place it nicely in the back of the net. Unfortunately Pine Hills came back in the last 15 minutes to beat us 32. Very proud of all the boys and their efforts. If we got anything from the game is the knowledge that Matty can keep and Parviz can cross. Bring on top placed UQ on Friday night!!

MEN’S RESULTS City League 3 April 23rd saw us away to table toppers Mitchelton in a Saturday evening kick off. We’d had a stop start few weeks due to both bye’s and the postponed round to accommodate the Brisbane Roar playoff game, so the all the lads were keen to get back playing. Mitchelton started the game well and we rode our luck for a period in which Derek Hennessy pulled off some fine saves. We built on this platform and grouped well to seize the initiative. Goals from Tadgh Keane and Connor Fountain had us 2 nil up at half time. The second half saw Mitchelton again start on the front foot and they got the early break through goal to trail by one. It was a bit of a “backs to the wall” performance for much of the second period until a fine goal from Dave Carreon assured the win late on. Another bye the following week didn’t help with momentum but motivation was not lacking as we hosted new table toppers The Gap at Elder Oval on Sunday May 8th for the twilight kick off. We conceded an early goal from open play in the first few minutes which was a setback. However, A Connor Fountain goal finished at the second attempt from a breakaway move had us back on level terms ten minutes later. In the second period neither team dominated and in fairness the game could have gone either way, with half chances for both teams. Not a bad result against an organised Gap side. Unfortunately Tadgh Keane picked up his fourth yellow card and will serve a one game ban. - Eamonn Turner

City 4 Legionnaires The legion has been struggling to convert starts into results, scratching out 3 draws and a loss in the last 4 games. Despite having only lost 2 games all season, the legion currently sits 7th out of 8 teams, with their 8 points coming from 1 win and 5 draws. Their most recent fixture was away to top-of-the-table Mitchelton, who (on 20 points) were opening up a big gap on the rest of the table. The game was played at a good pace despite the warm conditions, and Mitchelton opened the scoring after 20 minutes, winning a free kick 10 meters inside the Annerley half. The ball was floated into the 18 yard box and a tall Mitchelton striker met the ball about 12 yards out from goal and placed the ball in the top corner. The legion began to find some rhythm and shortly before half time Pete 'Pistol' Scott was played in and managed to slot it past the keeper off his left foot. Annerley remained on top in the 2nd half, but a fairly well structured Mitchelton proved hard to break down, and genuine chances were hard to come by. Annerley nearly pinched it when front man Scott managed to beat his man late in the 2nd half and take his shot on a very sharp angle. The shot beat the keeper and hit the underside of the crossbar deflecting downwards. The ball was deemed not to have crossed the line, and the legion had to settle for the 1 point. Despite adding another draw to the tally, the performance in this match showed the legionnaires are more than capable of competing with (and beating) any team in this division, and with some Friday night home fixtures coming up, and 2 games in hand still to play, they
