#AnnerleyFC

A LETTER FROM AFC Annerley FC is an inclusive family. We support the community and we support each other when in need. We are all proud of our club & this is shown through our love of the game and each other. Unfortunately, our senior clubhouse has been loved for a little too long, being built in 1946, it’s had a lot of social events to put up with and it's time that we put up our hand and ask for a little help. AFC’s Senior Women’s Committee is working hard to apply for grants that will help to fund some much needed repair. We aim to use any funds received to repair the leaking roof, remove all asbestos, restore the canteen/bar and upgrade the change rooms. We currently have a few applications in, which includes the Holden Home Ground Advantage grant. In 2014 Holden announced it would commit $5 million to support local sporting clubs across Australia as part of its Holden Home Ground Advantage community grants program. Keep your fingers crossed and hopefully we hear some good news in the foreseeable future.

A pat on the back to Jessica Poole for spearheading the applications and making sure we met the deadlines.

We’ve got over 530 registered players which has filled up nearly all of our teams! There is still availability in the following age groups: - Squirts (U3 to U5) - Under 6 - Under 7 - Under 8 Register in the above age groups via our website www.annerleyfc.com. Please contact us if you wish to play in an age group not listed above registrars@annerleyfc.com

We’re thrilled to start looking after Annerley FC family again this year from our HQ at the Junior Club House. We’ve got the perfect place for your pre/post game energy boost or to chill out with a cool drink while the kids play on the playground. Throughout the season we will be promoting AFC Game Day specials for all of our members so watch this space! Come hang with us  Trading Hours: Wednesday – Sunday 7am-1pm 98 Victoria Terrace, Greenslopes

WOMEN’S RESULTS Bwpl recap Round 2 saw us face premiership favourites, Peninsula Power. Our team wasn’t able to prepare as well as we normally do with a number of our players holding injuries and missing. Annerley kicked off the game at a very high intensity, playing some very strong attacking football, which saw them take 2-0 lead after just 4 minutes. Unfortunately, the team dropped to the standard of Power and with the lightning pace of a former W-League player as their centre forward, Power scored 2 goals before half time to equalize. The second half saw Annerley make too many individual errors and allowed Power to come away the winners, 2-4. (Goals – Donna Smith, Lareena Meikljohn) Round 3 lined us up against top of the table, The Gap. A few changes were made by head coach, Anthony Costa and the girls responded well, playing their best football to date. Annerley’s defense was rock solid, not only keeping a clean sheet, but only allowing The Gap 3 shots for the entire game. Our dominance was rewarded with 3 goals to see us run away with the game 3-0. (Goals – Donna Smith, Alice Foster, Rebecca Sweeney) Round 4. We took on last year’s Premiers and fellow Grand Finalists, Logan Lightning. Going into the game, we knew this would be our toughest challenge this year and we needed to start the game strongly. Unfortunately, our game was riddled with errors. Logan took their chances and scored 4 goals from 6 shots on target in the first half.

We went into the break 1-4 down. The second half saw us work hard to get something out of the game, but only managed a late consolation goal, going down 2-4. (Goals – Donna Smith, Rebecca Sweeney) We currently sit 8th on the ladder with 2 wins and 2 losses. This week sees us travel to UQFC in a game where 3 points is vital for us to compete for the premiership in 2016. Premier League

ressies recap In our last two games we have found that we have a bit more work to do if we want to compete with the more intelligent teams in the competition. In our game against The Gap we simply didn’t show up. Every aspect of the way we play wasn’t there, even our effort. However, we still kept the score line close at 2-1. Last week against Logan, our effort and application was back in spades although at times our technical level was off the pace. We came undone with two goals off set pieces; one goal from a long ball and the game ended at 3-1. The last few weeks have been great for me, as it has highlighted where my coaching can improve. There’s a lot of hard work ahead of us but as the season progresses we will go from strength to strength. – ML, Coach Premier League Reserves

BRISBANE WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE Saturday 19th March

University of QLD, Field 3 7:00pm (Reserves at 5:00pm)

This week we play UQFC away from home. We are currently sitting 8th on the ladder with 2 wins and 2 losses. With just the one game left before the Easter break, we will be working hard to make sure we go into the break with another win up our sleeve. So far this season, we have been very inconsistent, but we have continued to work hard at training and are constantly critiquing all areas of our game to make sure we continue to strive to be the best team we can be.

UQFC are struggling at the bottom of the ladder, but we need to make sure we do not underestimate any team and make sure we continue to stick to the game plan and work hard to get a good result.

We are confident in our ability and have a strong reserves team who support the team and there is always healthy competition for positions in the starting 11. Consistency is the key, and hopefully this week can be the start of a long consistent run for the team. Anthony Costa – Coach, BWPL

MEN’S RESULTS City league recap There was a sense of anticipation and excitement in the air last Friday as our Men's City League teams kicked off their respective seasons. The first round of fixtures saw both the City 2 and City 4 teams travel away to Toowong FC while the City 3's hosted Newmarket. The City 4's got their season off to a flying start with a commanding 3-1. New signing Peter Scott made a dream debut, bagging a first half brace, while Shannon Mantuefel put the icing on the cake, scoring a third in injury time. City League 4 Blue

The City 3's came out with all guns blazing, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals by Dave Carreno and Jeff Claudius. Unfortunately for the Annerley lads, the old saying that a two goal lead is the hardest to defend rang true and Newmarket struck twice in the second half, pinching a 2-2 draw.

MEN’S CAPITAL LEAGUE 2 Friday 18th March

Elder Oval, Annerley 1 8:30pm (Reserves at 6:30pm)

The first team and reserves in particular have made great starts to the season with both sides sitting at the top of their respective leagues. Whilst we have already played some impressive sides, the next few weeks will be the acid test with some tough games coming up. Sadly captain Colin McAlistair Suffered a season ending injury. Jason Lunchberry has taken over his role.

The Gap will be very tough opponents and I expect them to be challenging for promotion all year. We have had a good week in training and are looking forward to playing in front of a bigger crowd than usual. WHAT IS YOUR Why don’t you come on over to Annerley?

Glen Grant Gough, City League, Former Captain of City League 1 (2015) – until sacked by Tim Varitimos

“molldoll” Mollie O’Connor, BWPL Why do you play for Annerley? Everyone is open and positive, even if the league is competitive. Great coaches and bunch of girls committed to the club. I believe that Annerley has a good reputation in the football community, which is something that I'm proud to be a part of. What are your biggest pet peeves on the football field? If people don't put their full effort in, 100% or go home baby!! Do you have any hidden talents? I have been known to strike a chord on the guitar. What is your biggest fear? I'm not a fan of eating wildly weird things ie crickets/insects nope bye. What would you sing at Karaoke night? Singing Annerley to the tune of Valerie by Amy Winehouse, of course Are you related or distantly related to anyone famous? My Uncle Mark was Captain of the Australian Wallabies

Favourite jersey number? Why? 11, due to a mate at another club I played for wanting the number; as I was in the position of authority I decided I would be 11 EVERY WEEK! Most embarrassing footballing moment? Missing so many sitters that my own father gave me the nickname “crooked foot”. Pre-game rituals/superstitions? Two white bread rolls with vegemite and a bottle of coke to get the engine running 2 hours before a game. I’m no good without them. Which footballer most inspires you? Why? When he was a Gooner and not a turncoat, Cesc Fabregas. Best ever goal celebration? After attending my first ever doof I replicated a certain dance move someone was doing there, which looked like me humping the corner flag in the end. If anyone has a VHS I can show you video evidence.
