Projecting power from the tower

From the top of Ramstein Air Base’s air traffic control tower, the view of the local German countryside stretches across for miles. From that vantage point, 86th Operations Support Squadron air traffic controllers control the arrival and departure of every aircraft within the Ramstein airspace.

In the small room on top of the control tower, a team of Airmen work 24/7 to sequence aircraft and coordinate with host nation partners to ensure safe, uninterrupted flight operations.

“Our job never stops,” said Staff Sgt. Lana Fischer, 86th OSS air traffic control watch supervisor. “We work nights, weekends and holidays.”

“We never let our guard down,” she said. “One mistake on our end could have a dire impact, so we run checklists and briefs constantly. Our number one rule is to ensure safe airfield operations.”

Kaiserslautern military community works together during ammonia leak exercise

A large-scale exercise took place in Kaiserslautern Nov. 22, involving firefighting and disaster response units from the City of Kaiserslautern, the German Red Cross, Arbeiter-SamariterBund, the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department and the Rodenbach Volunteer Fire Department.

The exercise scenario was a simulated hazardous material spill with several injured individuals. Emergency services of both nations worked closely together to manage the situation, rescue the injured, cordon off the danger zone, and decontaminate those affected. Representatives of the Bundeswehr County liaison command and the state police observed the exercise and gathered valuable insight for future joint operations.

The aim of the exercise was to further strengthen cooperation between German and American forces, particularly in the initial phase of deployment, and to optimize coordination in the event of a real-world incident.

All exercise objectives were fully achieved, and a detailed evaluation and analysis will take place to ensure that insights gained can be incorporated into future operations and improvements. The team

drew a positive conclusion that the exercise went smoothly and underlined the importance of partnership-based cooperation between the organizations involved.

Ramstein Fire Chief Kenneth Helgerson expressed his gratitude to both teams, who met for a snack together after the exercise. He summarized the good cooperation with the words: “We may not speak the same language, but we have the same goals and are less different than we think.”

Mr. Mike Kopp, Head of Operations at the Kaiserslautern Fire Department, expressed similar sentiments. “I would also like to thank both teams for their excellent cooperation and am pleased at how professionally the entire exercise was carried out.”

feet using both visual and radar feed. They do all of this while simultaneously meeting every standard required to fly within the local airspace.

Daily operations inside the tower require tight teamwork.

“It’s a very close-knit environment,” said Master Sgt. Paige Smith, 86th OSS air traffic control chief controller. “You’re working in a small space together every day, so the team becomes like family. I was stationed here 10 years ago and it still feels the same. I love coming to work with these people.”

To Smith, the job is like solving a puzzle. Sequencing aircraft with different performance characteristics requires constant

recalculation in real time.

“You see a potential conflict out the window and you start working through the solution in your head,” Smith said. “Which aircraft needs spacing? Who needs priority? You see your plan play out in front of you and that’s the part I love.”

Ramstein’s air traffic controllers play a vital role in missions far beyond Germany.

From aeromedical evacuation movements to distinguished visitor support, many of the Air Force’s nationally visible operations begin or end under a tower’s control.

“We’re called the Global Gateway for a reason,” Smith said. “A lot of what happens downrange starts here. We may not always

know the details but we know we’re a piece of it by keeping the airfield open and safe.”

Every arrival and departure goes through multiple units before entering or leaving Ramstein.

The Ground Controlled Approach facility controls a wider proximity of airspace around Ramstein that the Airmen in the tower cannot see. The GCA radar team sequences aircraft until they are roughly five miles outside the range of the flightline before they transition them to the tower who takes control of the final approach and landing.

Departure works in reverse, the tower works the aircraft from their parking spot through takeoff and up to five miles away before handing them off to the GCA for further support.

“They work the larger host-nation controlled airspace,” Smith said. “If GCA is

closed then we work directly with our host nation partners at Langen, Germany, but most of the time we hand aircraft back and forth with GCA. It’s one mission, just different pieces of the airspace.”

Air Force air traffic controllers are increasingly becoming dual-rated, meaning they gain experience in both tower and radar operations. Ramstein supports that initiative by rotating qualified Airmen between the tower and GCA duties.

“We want people to have breadth in the career field,” Smith said. “It makes you a more agile controller. Our tech school teaches the foundation for both operations, but you get certified while performing on-the-job duties at your first base.”

The responsibility of controlling airfield operations requires diligent focus, discipline and continuous support from every controller.

Safety, comfort, reliability: The critical role of Air Force flight attendants

Flight attendants in the U.S. Air Force ensure the safety, comfort and overall success of missions transporting senior leaders around the globe. Their work begins long before takeoff and continues until the final passenger leaves the aircraft.

“Attention to detail is extremely important with this job,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Sherod Ellis, 76th Airlift Squadron instructor flight attendant. “We make sure our passengers are transported safely, comfortably and reliably to their location.”

Preparing meals for long missions requires careful planning and coordination. Flight attendants create options, shop for ingredients and prepare meals while considering dietary restrictions, food safety and storage limitations.

“We handle everything from shopping and cooking, to making sure meals are fresh and meet the needs of the passengers,” Ellis said. “Sometimes we have to adjust on the fly if something goes wrong, like a meal going bad or a change in schedule.”

Emergency preparedness is a core part of the flight attendant role. Flight attendants undergo annual egress training and are trained to use all emergency equipment to keep passengers safe in critical situations.

“There’s a reason we say safety, comfort and reliability,” Ellis said. “If we aren’t safe, we can’t take care of our passengers. That means knowing every piece of emergency equip-

ment and being ready to respond instantly.”

Physical and logistical challenges are constant. Flight attendants have to be able to balance passenger needs and aircraft safety, all while maintaining high energy during long flights across multiple time zones.

“We cook the food, we clean the aircraft and we take care of passengers,” said Master Sgt. Jenna Bishop, 76th Airlift Squadron instructor

flight attendant. “We’re the bridge between the passengers and the crew, making sure everything goes smoothly while the flight crew handles the front.”

Flexibility is essential; each mission can present unexpected changes in schedule, passenger needs or flight duration, requiring real-time problem solving.

“You have to come up with solutions on the spot,” Bishop said. “Flexibility and planning are key fac-

tors in this job. No two missions are the same, and you have to adapt to whatever happens while planning for the specific job. For example, you wouldn’t bring milk or other perishables on a two-week Africa mission.”

Experience in other career fields often strengthens performance as a flight attendant. Previous work in maintenance, medical or technical fields helps prepare them for the demanding physical and operational aspects of the job.

“Attention to detail and perseverance from my previous maintenance job really prepared me for 24-hour duty days,” Bishop said. “You have to be disciplined, motivated and ready for anything.”

Flight attendants support the global mobility of Air Force leaders, ensuring every mission runs safely and smoothly. Their combination of technical skill, flexibility and attention to detail is critical to the success of high-level operations.

Looking underground with waves

Questions and answers: The Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern (hereafter SWK) are exploring the subsurface beneath the city and district for geothermal energy opportunities. For this purpose, large trucks will be on the road in December. What can the population expect?

What are the municipal utilities planning in terms of geothermal energy?

The SWK wants to know whether geothermal energy, i.e., energy from the earth’s interior, is an option for supplying heat for the population of Kaiserslautern and the surrounding region. “We are investigating whether geothermal energy can be a base load alternative for our district heating,” said SWK Managing direc-

tor Arvid Blume. The project is called “Pfälzer Wärme” (Palatinate Heat). Information on this can be found on a website of the same name www. pfaelzer-waerme.de.

How will measurements be carried out?

vey teams are easily recognizable by their large vehicles, known as vibro trucks, “Maximum transparency is very important to us,” said Blume with regard to the measurements.

How does the measurement/ seismic survey work?

the city and villages?

“We are collecting endless amounts of data,” said SWK Managing director Blume. To this end, measurement teams are expected to be out and about from the beginning of December, covering an area of around 150 square kilometers and, roughly speaking, surveying the subsurface. This is carried out on behalf of SWK, by the company DMT.

DMT is the Deutsche Montan Technologie, based in Essen, Germany. Around 100 DMT employees will be involved in the project, reported geologist Uwe Baaske, project manager of SWK. The seismic sur-

“The most annoying thing is the noise,” says Uwe Baaske. When the measurement teams drive through the streets, they generate noise that is remotely comparable to the passage of garbage trucks. The measurement process itself, when the trucks generate vibrations that are transferred as sound waves into the earth, takes about one and a half minutes, Then the truck moves on and depending on the length of the street, it can take up to an hour and a half to measure an entire street.

“It’s a kind of mobile construction site,” said Baaske, referring to measurements on major traffic routes such as thoroughfares.

What rules and regulations do the experts have to follow when taking measurements?

The vibrotrucks drive through the area of interest and send sound waves into the subsurface at predetermined locations. According to Baaske, four measurement teams will be deployed in the region, each with two vibration vehicles. The sound waves are reflected by rock layers in the subsurface, which are then recorded by small sensors, called geophones. The geophones were laid out at the end of November before the trucks began their tours. The data collected will be used to create a view of the earth’s interior and reveal its geological structure. Baaske compares the measurements to computer tomography in medicine. In preliminary investigations, 27,000 measuring points and around 17,000 vibration points were identified in the area. These are processed by DMT’s teams starting December for the duration of about two weeks, dependin on weather conditions.

What can the population expect when the large trucks drive through

Regulations and permits for the seismic project are laid down in the main operating plan, which has been approved by the State Office for Geology and Mining, Uwe Baaske explained.

What are the devices that are being laid out?

What happens to them?

The devices, passive seismic sensors, resemble a cube with a stem, with an edge length of about 15 centimeters. The geophones contain technology that is essential for measurements. They are laid out and collected after the survey process and around 10,000 devices are in use and reused in the course of the seismic survey. By mid-December, all geophones will have disappeared from the landscape. According to Baaske, the devices use GPS to record exactly where they were laid out and which vibrations were registered. The collected data is then read out, the geophones do not transmit data on their own, Baaske assured us. The vibro trucks only travel on public roads and tracks.

Will geothermal energy definitely come to Kaiserslautern?

According to SWK board member Arvid Blume, “geothermal energy could be a way to supply district heating.” Whether this will happen also depends on the results of the investigations. The seismic investigations are intended to provide the data basis for such a decision. Deep geothermal energy must be “reliable and affordable and needs to be properly evaluated,” he emphasized.

What is the schedule?

Measurements began Dec. 1 and are expected to last until mid-month. The measurement teams work Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. After final evaluation a decision to continue with the

project will

made.

Students at Kaiserslautern High School had the opportunity to attend an Army Community Service Job Fair through the school’s Career Practicum program for 12th-grade students. The job fair, held Sept. 25 at the Kazabra Club on Vogelweh, allowed students to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting, practicing formal greetings, networking, and professional conversation for the first time.

The Career Practicum program is an experience-based class designed to help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in the professional world. Students create career documents, learn about workplace expectations, and, once ready, are assigned to real workplaces in the Kaiserslautern Military Community to gain workplace immersion in fields they are passionate about.

KHS had an excellent turnout. Of the 311 total jobseekers who attended, 61 were KHS students representing the Career Practicum program. Students were encouraged to introduce themselves to as many of the 86 employers and 37 company/command tables as possible while collecting information on each one. They also had the opportunity to distribute resumes they created in class, participate in mock interviews, and receive resume reviews from ACS staff.

Tearia Felton, supervisory HR specialist for DODEA Europe, attended the fair and said, “It was truly inspiring to see the students so engaged at the career fair! Their thoughtful questions, preparedness, and genuine enthusiasm when learning about career opportunities within DoDEA beyond the classroom—their energy and curiosity were truly refreshing!”

The job fair featured a wide range of employers, including U.S. Army Medical, Red Cross, Service Credit Union, U.S. Army Finance Center of Excellence, and Stars and Stripes, among others. Nelly Olson, Employment Readiness Program Manager for ACS, Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation Division, praised the KHS Career Practicum students for their role in planning and preparing for the event. “ACS could not have done

it without the assistance from the KHS team,” Olson said. “The students attended the career fair armed with plenty of questions for employers to gain knowledge on job skill needs and educational requirements for future employment preparation. The participating employers thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the CP Class.”

Many students said they gained valuable practice in professional conversation and networking. Though the experience was more challenging than anticipated, they reported learning a lot about workplace professionalism.

Senior Pentagon official visits APS-2 Powidz, underscoring its critical role supporting NATO

POWIDZ, POLAND – Another senior Pentagon official visited the Powidz Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 worksite recently, underscoring its critical role in strengthening NATO readiness along the alliance’s eastern flank.

Assistant Secretary of War for International Security Affairs Daniel Zimmerman met with leaders from the Powidz APS-2 worksite Nov. 19, including Army Field Support BattalionPoland Commander Lt. Col. Michelle McDevitt, as well as 405th Army Field Support Brigade Commander Col. Ernest Lane II, based in Germany.

Also present during the key leader engagement at Powidz was U.S. European Command Director of Plans, Policy and Strategy (J5) Air Force Maj. Gen. Russell Driggers and U.S. Army Europe and Africa Deputy Commanding General Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie.

The team of distinguished visitors toured the Army’s newest APS-2 worksite to better understand the commitment the Polish government has made to the NATO alliance, including plans to potentially expand the site, according to an informational briefing sent by AFSBn-Poland to the 405th AFSB headquarters.

“It’s always a pleasure to host senior military leaders at our worksite. We have an incredible team of Soldiers, Army civilians, and contractors as well as our amazing host nation partners here at Powidz from the Polish military’s 33rd APS Battalion,” McDevitt said.

“Each key leader engagement is an opportunity to share how our team is leading the way, able to provide resources to Soldiers on the ground in support of U.S. European Command and NATO on Europe’s eastern flank,” said McDevitt. “We have a shared burden at our site with our Polish counterparts, and hosting Assistant Secretary of War for International Security Affairs Daniel Zimmerman was a great way to showcase our capabilities and highlight our amazing team.”

While conducting the site visit, Zimmerman recognized members of the Polish military’s 33rd APS Battalion, who work with AFSBnPoland at the Powidz site to ensure the thousands of APS-2 tactical vehicles and major end items stored and maintained there remain fit

to fight and ready for issue. Also during the visit Driggers took the opportunity to recognize members of AFSBn-Poland and the Powidz team, as well.

Polish and U.S. personnel at the worksite were presented with coins of excellence for their continued work advancing the mission and strengthening deterrence on Europe’s eastern flank, attesting to AFSBn-Poland’s motto ‘This is the Way’ as a remarkable example for others to follow, the informational briefing stated.

AFSBn-Poland is charged with providing and coordinating receipt, transfer, storage and maintenance of APS-2 tactical vehicles and equipment sets at Powidz to enable commanders to conduct unified action and a full range of military operations in sup-

port

of U.S

European Command.

The Powidz APS-2 worksite houses an entire armored brigade combat team’s worth of APS-2 tactical vehicles and equipment sets, managed and maintained at ready-to-issue standards by AFSBn-Poland and the 33rd APS Battalion. The Powidz APS-2 worksite demonstrates the U.S., Poland and NATO’s commitment to maintaining rapid deployment capabilities, playing a crucial role in deterrence through enduring agreements and strategic investments.

The 405th AFSB’s prepositioned stocks program and it’s six APS-2 worksites in Europe alleviate many of the deployment requirements typically associated with sending major combat units to Europe from the U.S. It is estimated that the APS-2 worksites in Europe can help reduce deployment timelines for an armored brigade combat team from 60 days to as little as a week or two.

The 405th AFSB is the premier logistics integrator and synchronizer for U.S. European Command, enabling readiness solutions to ‘Support the Warrior’ by operationalizing U.S. Army Materiel Command capabilities and delivering readiness within the U.S. Army Europe and Africa areas of responsibility at the point of need.

The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging AMC’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces.

627 Movement Control Team earns National Defense Transportation Military Unit of the Year

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 627th Movement Control Team was named the National Defense Transportation Association’s 2025 Military Unit of the Year for outstanding performance, rapid operational support and consistently high customer satisfaction in demanding conditions.

For Soldiers who spent nine of the past 12 months supporting missions across the U.S. Army Europe and Africa area of operations, the recognition carries particular weight.

“Sometimes at the MCT level, it feels like what we do doesn’t get seen,” said Sgt. 1st Class Kendrick Brown, detachment sergeant. “It’s great for Soldiers to know that not only our battalion and brigade, but ‘Big Army,’ recognizes the work they’ve been doing in Poland, across USAREUR-AF and down in Africa.”

During the award period, the team supported several of the Army’s most visible transportation missions. Brown said the unit played a key role in Operation European Assure, Deter and Reinforce, pushing ammunition, vehicles and equipment forward to support Ukraine. The team also managed major transportation requirements for African Lion, the largest annual U.S. military exercise on the African continent.

Capt. Allegra Jenkins, detachment commander, said the team’s work falls under theater opening: receiving personnel and equipment at ports, establishing cargo accountabil-

ity and ensuring combat power arrives where it is needed. The 627th MCT is part of the 16th Sustainment Brigade, one of the Army’s busiest logistics formations.

“When the Army needs to bring combat power into this theater, this team is the one standing at the ports receiving it,” Jenkins said. “Without them, there would be a noticeable gap in capability across the theater.”

Much of the team’s success relies on junior Soldiers who spend long days tallying equipment, checking serial numbers and relaying information to noncommissioned officers tracking cargo movement.

“The Soldiers are the ones in the yard running the operations,” said Sgt. Mbosse Ba, a transportation management coordinator assigned to the 627th MCT. “We rely on them completely. Without them, we couldn’t do the mission.”

The 627th MCT consists of 21 personnel divided among four movement control elements, each led by an NCO. According to Brown, missions routinely require the MCT to send elements forward for 30- to 60-day rotations, including over holidays.

The Army’s shift between different tracking systems also tested the team’s adaptability. Over the last year, the unit used the Portable Deployment Kit, or PDK; the Distribution Replacement Automated Management system, or DRAM; and the PDK-Lite scanner.

Throughout those transitions, the team maintained the ability to operate entirely by

analog methods if a cyberattack disrupted digital systems.

“One of the biggest things we’ve focused on is proving we can accomplish the mission even if our computers go down,” Jenkins said. “It forces us back to the basics and makes us more capable in a contested environment.”

Working alongside NATO partners has also become routine for the team.

Ba recalled coordinating movements with roughly a dozen partner nations while on a mission in Poland. Jenkins added that customs processes and host-nation requirements vary

widely across Europe and Africa, requiring Soldiers to adjust quickly on each rotation.

“No matter where you go, the language of logistics feels the same,” Brown said. “Move it, get it there and get it back. That doesn’t change.”

As several senior NCOs prepare to rotate out this year, Jenkins said her priority is passing on their experience to the next generation of Soldiers.

“This award shows the standard,” Jenkins said. “My goal is to make sure the next group can perform at the same level and keep this team ready for whatever comes next.”

US, British Soldiers reinforce multinational medical cooperation in Best of the Best Competition

Soldiers assigned to the 30th Medical Brigade alongside British Soldiers, tested their medical proficiency, physical readiness, and tactical decision-making during the 30th Medical Brigade Best of the Best Competition, held across multiple training sites from Nov. 17–21.

“This competition is a great opportunity to work shoulder to shoulder with a partner nation. We know we won’t fight a war alone,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph Franco, senior enlisted advisor of the 30th Medical Brigade. “Being able to show them how our equipment works — and learning the same from them — creates a sense of trust. If I’m on the battlefield and see them next to me, I know I’m safe.”

The competition kicked off Monday with a series of demanding events that immediately tested Soldiers’ endurance and grit. At Baumholder, competitors tackled the Expert Physical Fitness Assessment, beginning with a 1-mile run before grinding through dead-stop pushups, a 100-meter sprint, stacking 16 heavy sandbags, and a high crawl ending in a final 1-mile run. Next, they moved straight into stress shoots and weapons lanes, where medical and marksmanship tasks had to be executed under fatigue and pressure. The intensity continued at the water survival lane, forcing Soldiers to improvise flotation devices and maintain focus despite exhaustion. As

darkness fell, the day concluded with night land navigation at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, where competitors traversed rugged terrain under low visibility and unforgiving timelines.

“The fitness events were tougher than we expected, but they pushed both medical squads to perform at a higher level,” said a British medic. “Competing alongside a NATO partner made the experience even better and showed how strong we are when we work together.”

As the week progressed, competitors were challenged with the Army Fitness Test — pushing through deadlifts, hand-release

pushups, the sprint-drag-carry, a plank, and a two-mile run. The trials continued with demanding medical evacuation drills, where teams hauled simulated casualties on litter across rugged obstacle courses. From there, the pressure mounted in complex Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear casualty care scenarios, forcing soldiers to react under chemical threat simulations while providing lifesaving treatment. Finally, competitors conducted daytime land navigation, testing their ability to stay composed and mission-focused in the most disorienting conditions.

“It was a great opportunity to work with

our allied medics,” said British Warrant Officer Class 1 Fiona Creed, “The healthy competition pushed us to train hard and compete at our best.”

Near Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, competitors were tested in advanced medical scenarios that demanded both skill and composure. They executed triage tasks, performed K9 Tactical Combat Casualty Care on the Diesel Advanced Canine Medical Trainer, and faced a rigorous knowledge board.

Each event required rapid decision-making, clear communication under pressure, and the ability to maintain precision even while physically and mentally fatigued.

“This event tested us mentally and physically while keeping the competition friendly,” said Sgt. Caleb White, an operating room specialist assigned to the 512th Field Hospital. “Training alongside each other showed how they operate compared to us, and we walked away better because of it.”

Throughout the week, both U.S. and British Soldiers demonstrated interoperability and professionalism, reinforcing strong multinational medical cooperation. The competition strengthened readiness, enhanced combined medical response techniques, and showcased the value of training shoulder-to-shoulder with NATO partners.

“Anytime we can train together, we grow stronger together,” Sgt. Caleb White, an operating room specialist, assigned to the 30th Medical Brigade, “That’s what this competition was really about.”

National Territorial Commanders Committee delegates Advance European Mobility, logistics cooperation

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command hosted more than 20 delegates from allied and partner nations for a National Territorial Commanders Steering Committee session at the U.S Deployment Processing Center, on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Nov. 18–19. The purpose of the steering committee was to improve host-nation support coordination and strengthen multinational logistics across Europe.

The National Territorial Commanders Committee was established in 1986 by Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the United States. It is an essential forum where nations compare notes on host-nation support and look for ways to make multinational movement a little smoother.

This session brought together representatives from across Europe and North America, along with observers from the Joint Support and Enabling Command, NATO Support and Procurement Agency, and the European Union Military Staff.

Lt. Col. Kalle M.J. Leinonen, a Finnish Defence Forces leader and the current NTCC chair, said the group focused on two main priorities this cycle.

“We are focusing on enablement and observing the European-wide logistical network,” Leinonen said. “We look at the ability to support troops across borders and across different national systems.”

Leinonen added that the basics still matter the most.

“Once we send troops into a country, there must be a minimum level of capability for them to use,” he said. “Without that standard of host-nation support, the operation cannot begin at all.”

During breakout groups, participants dug into documentation processes, mobility corridors, and host-nation support contacts. Much of the real discussion happened in the corners of the room, over tables and maps, where del-

egates compared experiences that don’t always make it into formal agendas.

Capt. Bo de Oliveira Ommen, Denmark’s head of host-nation support coordination, said the NTCC’s informal structure is part of what keeps it useful.

“NATO workshops have very fixed agendas and tight timelines,” Ommen said. “The NTCC gives us room for the side discussions we can’t

always have in other forums.”

Ommen added that the face-to-face time matters as much as the formal program.

“Everyone is extremely busy at home,” Ommen said. “Taking time to connect and learn from one another, even about things not directly tied to today’s task, pays off when those issues suddenly become relevant.”

During a breakout session, Canadian Armed Forces Maj. Pierre-Vincent Daigle spoke about the challenges countries face when sending forces overseas once movement begins.

“As a sending nation, we have to understand what host nations need from us,” Daigle said. “Right now, we move administratively from Montreal to Riga, but in a contested environment, that would be impossible. We would have to rely on European mobility corridors.”

The 21st TSC played a supporting role throughout the event.

Denise McClure, the 21st TSC’s host-nation support branch chief, said the unit offered to host the session because it could provide the required NATO Secret environment.

“We wanted to showcase the U.S. Deployment Processing Center, an instrumental capability for U.S. forces deploying to and from the European theater,” McClure said.

“Demonstrating the DPC’s capabilities connected the committee’s themes and showed our allies and partners the standard the United States uses to receive, marshal, and prepare troops for onward movement.”

As the session wrapped up, Leinonen said each nation left with clearer priorities and a better sense of what still needs to be aligned.

“All our nations face the same situation when it comes to time, we have limited resources, and we have to catch the train that has already left the station,” Leinonen said.

ABC IN KMC: St. Nicholas

Saint Nicholas of Myra was an early Christian bishop born around 270 A.D. in the town of Patara, which is now in Turkey. He is also known as Nicolas of Bari, as Patara was the capital of the Roman province of Lycia at that time.

He is mainly known for his acts of kindness and generosity and is vividly celebrated by children in Germany and other European countries. In addition, countless legends have evolved over the centuries and eventually led to the figure of “Santa Claus” in the late 1800’s.

One famous story about Saint Nicholas involves a poor man with three daughters. He was unable to afford dowries for his daughters which meant that they might be forced into a life of servitude. Legend has it that Nicholas secretly visited their home on three individual nights and left a bag of gold coins for each daughter, enabling them to marry and enjoy a better future.

It is also said that he would place bags of nuts, tangerines or other goodies of the season on the doorsteps of poor families to help feed and raise the children. There is a further tale about miraculously saving the lives of countless fishermen on a stormy night at sea.

Saint Nicholas is also known for his role in the First Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. when he defended the doctrine of the Trinity against Arian heresy. This led to being imprisoned by Emperor Constantine (who was originally from Trier by the way) but was released in the end.

After his death on Dec. 6, 343 A.D. Nicholas was canonized as a saint and is celebrated on this date in many Christian traditions. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of many groups, including sailors and fishermen, merchants and children. During the course of time, he has also become the patron saint of travelers, and some drivers place tokens depicting him on their dashboards or key chains for safe travels.

His legacy of generosity and compassion continues to inspire people around the world, especially in Europe.

In Germany, many children are excited when shining their shoes or boots on the evening of Dec. 5, in hopes that St. Nicholas will pay them a visit overnight, bringing candy, chocolate, nuts and tangerines. Some villages also have celebrations with a Saint Nicholas on a horse accompanied by bonfires,

food and drink.

Surprisingly, Saint Nicholas, or Noel Baba, is still celebrated in Turkey, in particular in the region around Myra (now called Demre) on the south-western coast. On Dec. 6 there are ceremonies and processions at the Saint Nicholas Memorial Museum and a church in his honor. Traditionally, even non-Christians take part in some of the celebrations, as he is honored for his generosity and kindness beyond religious beliefs and as the guardian of seafarers.

In the Netherlands the figure is known as Sinterklaas and is celebrated with great enthusiasm beginning as early as midNovember. Sinterklaas arrives by steamboat from Spain and is often depicted as a stately figure with a long white beard in bishop’s robes. He is accompanied by his helpers the Pieten, who fill shoes with sweets and small gifts.

Further up north in Scandinavian countries Saint Nicholas Day is also observed on Dec. 6 and traditions vary by region. In some areas, children leave out shoes or stockings to be filled. In Norway the figure of Nisse, a gnome-like creature, is said to live in barns and takes care of animals, but also brings small gifts to children.

In Denmark, Julemanden brings presents on Christmas Eve, but Saint Nicholas also makes a showing with smaller gifts on or about Dec. 6.

It is heartwarming to see how Saint Nicholas’ legacy is still honored in his place of origin, but also brings joy to children and adults alike across continents.

So, don’t forget to shine your shoes tonight and put them in front of the door. You may just find a nice surprise in the morning!

Hot Pit Refueling: Ramstein supports the fighter mission

Story and photos by

U.S. Airmen from the 435th Contingency Response Group, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron and 52nd LRS completed Ramstein’s first-ever F-35A Lightning II hotpit refueling operation at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 14.

Hot-pit refueling enables aircraft to return to the air as quickly as possible without having to completely power off. Ramstein is conventionally an air mobility base, launching missions with the C-17 Globemaster III, C-5M Galaxy and the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. This exercise marks a significant milestone for the base’s ability to support fighter missions.

“The importance of it out here today is that this is the first time that Ramstein has been able to hot-pit F-35s,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Freddy Atwood, 435th Contingency Response Squadron C-17 crewchief. “Proving that concept to not only Ramstein, but the rest of USAFE-AFAFRICA (United States Armed Forces Europe Armed Forces Africa), shows them that just because we’re not a fighter base, doesn’t mean we can’t support the fighters in our AOR (Area of Responsibility).”

So far, the CRS has been able to conduct hot-pit refuels in multiple areas of Europe as well as being involved in the first-ever highway landing in Finland. Airmen from the 86th LRS showed interest in getting hot-pit certification for fighter aircraft and Spangdahlem AB was able to assist with

this certification process as they had just revamped their hot-pit refueling training into three-phases.

The first phase is in the classroom, where regulations and aircraft layouts are explained. The second phase is hands-on with engines off, to learn with minimal risk. Phase three, is where personnel are able to put their knowledge to the test on aircraft with running engines.

“At the end of the day it’s about the mission, it’s about getting aircraft into the air but without fuel that can’t happen,”

said Tech. Sgt. Bejandrew De Guzman, 52nd LRS Fuels Distribution non commissioned officer in charge. “If we can help our POL (Petroleum, Oils and Lubricants) guys across the Air Force do that in the most efficient and effective way possible we’re going to do what we need to do and that’s what’s going to help us win the fight.”

This exercise enabled Airmen at the 86th LRS to fully support hot-pit refueling at both their home station and on deployments, showcasing the 435th CRS’s overall capability opens up the AOR to anywhere.

“My teammates have been doing an amazing job, and the exercise from what we’ve been told, was a success,” Atwood said. “Us being able to not only help out with their operation here, but to help them succeed on getting home has been a big tremendous success for us.”

Through careful coordination across multiple bases and squadrons the exercise was a success refueling fighter aircraft on a primarily heavy aircraft base, cementing Ramstein’s position as the “Global Gateway.”

U.S. Airmen assigned to the 435th Contingency Response Group, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron and 52nd LRS conduct hot-refueling operations on three F-35A Lightning II aircraft from the 48th Fighter Wing, RAF Lakenheath, at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 14. The operation marked the first time the capability was performed at Ramstein.

This refueling exercise certified 17 Airmen from both the 86th LRS Petroleum, Oils, and Lubricants section and 435th CRG.

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Yajairo Calderon, 435th Contingency Response Squadron flight chief, conducts a cold refueling operation on an F-35A Lightning II aircraft from the 48th Fighter Wing, RAF Lakenheath, at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 14.

Staying mentally fit: Resources to help improve mental health

Being stationed overseas can feel hard at times, especially during the holiday season. For many, this is their first time away from home. For others, the holidays remind them of a traumatic time. Whether or not the grayer skies proves to be a challenge for you, it is important to know what resources are available on base to stay on top of your mental health.

The 86th Medical Group Mental Health Clinic provides a range of services to help service members treat mental health and other conditions to improve daily function.

“We offer a range of services,” said Capt. Kaseem Foster, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron clinical psychologist. “We have the anxiety and depression group, attention and concentration group, dialectical behavioral therapy group, trauma group and our sleep group.”

It is crucial to prioritize mental health because when our mental well-being is jeopardized, it can affect our physical health as well.

“Depression, anxiety and your emotions have a direct impact on your body,” Foster said. “When people are more depressed they feel pain more intensely. Mental health may not cause certain conditions, but it will definitely affect them.”

There are many misconceptions about visiting the mental health clinic, however, at the end of the day, the mission is to take care of service members and their mental health.

U.S. Air Force Capt. Jamie Osborne, 86th Airlift Wing chaplain, and Senior Airman Janet Aldaco-Thomas, 86th AW religious affairs journeyman, pose for a photo inside the Southside Chapel at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 5. Together, they provide spiritual support, counseling and morale boosting programs that help Airmen stay resilient through life’s challenges. Photos by Airman Paden Henry

“A lot of people don’t come to the mental health clinic because they don’t want to get in trouble,” Foster said. “Our goal is never to remove people from the fight or from their career fields. Our goal is to get people to a safe and stable place.”

In the end, it is crucial for everyone to prioritize their mental well-being because everyone deserves the utmost care and support.

“You matter,” Foster said. “That’s the most important thing. Each individual Airman matters.”

Service members can also speak to chaplains on base. Although Airmen may associate chaplains with spiritual well-being rather than mental health, the two go hand-in-hand.

“A big part of our mental

health is our spiritual fitness,” said Capt. Jamie Osborne, 86th Airlift Wing chaplain. “It’s feeling connected to other people.”

Osborne explained, when it comes to determining whether to seek help or not, the first step is to be honest with yourself about how you feel.

“Mental health is someone’s inner world,” Osborne said. “Sometimes that state of being is in a good level, and sometimes it’s in a place that needs some moral support. I think it is something that’s hard to put our fingers on, but when we know it’s not in a positive place, we can all recognize it.”

Regardless of whether someone holds a religious belief or not, the chaplains are available to speak with all service members.

“We’re here to support all Airmen,” Osborne said. “If they have a religious belief or don’t have one, we’re there to serve them all and support them in their spiritual fitness, which is directly tied to their mental health.”

Answering our nation’s call is a major accomplishment, one that may come with some mental health challenges. It is vital for everyone to take care of their mental health, so every service member can be their best selves to continue building resiliency and accomplish the mission.

“Our Airmen are incredible,” Osborne exclaimed. “Everyday people are doing amazing things and along with that comes a big cost. Sometimes we need more support just to continue doing the amazing work we’ve committed ourselves to.”

German 101Home Vocabulary

Building your vocabulary in German will bring you one step closer to complete fluency! The number of steps to fluency however is in question as German can be a tough language due to its sentence structure, pronunciation and extremely long words. A great way to add to your vocabulary repertoire is to use flashcards. More precisely, put flash cards on things!

Your house or apartment is full of places to stick sticky notes (or flashcards) so you can learn visually instead of just studying a boring dictionary. We have put together a list of essential “around the house” vocabulary that you can afix on the objects they translate to.

SKI AREAS from Page 1

think traffic, crowds, and those gnarly Alpine roads. Little known fact: within just a few hours’ drive, KMC dwellers can find a surprising mix of lesserknown winter sports destinations that are perfect for off-the-beaten-piste weekend getaways. Here are five underthe-radar, non-Alps spots that offer plenty of winter magic without the logistical headaches.

Wintersport-Arena Sauerland

The Sauerland region often feels surprising: you’re nowhere near the Alps, yet the infrastructure is modern and the terrain is far more substantial than most central German hills. If you’re new (or even new-ish) to skiing or snowboarding, the

Getting there: By car, plan for about 3.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 2.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 4.5 hours from Stuttgart.

Black Forest Germany’s Black Forest may be famous for its cake and cuckoo clocks. But it is also a super hilly natural paradise that provides several compact, hassle-free (and lowerpriced, relative to the Alps) ski areas.

Feldberg is the largest and most developed mountain in the region, but it remains far less touristed than any Alpine destination. The evergreen backdrop provides a cool, distinct Nordic-German vibe, too. You’ll feel like you’ve found a local gem, and the slopes wind through thick forests and wide open ridges. Feldberg is a

Wintersport-Arena, which is a partnership of almost half a dozen ski areas, will be your jam. The runs are ideal for beginning and intermediate skiiers.

Winterberg itself is the best-known ski area in the region. But if you venture beyond the main pistes, you’ll find quiet slopes, forested runs, and a laid-back regional culture. Snowmaking is extensive, giving the area one of the most reliable winters north of the Alps.

Willingen, another great option, feels more off the beaten path, with sweeping views and a friendly small-town atmosphere.

great place for snowboarders in particular, thanks to its wide pistes and rolling terrain.

Getting there: By car, Feldberg is about 3.5 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and 2 hours from Stuttgart.

Eifel Region

If you want a quirky, spontaneous, or day-trip ski outing, the Eifel’s small resorts and lift-served hills are ideal. Spots like Schwarzer Mann, Wolfsschlucht, and Hohe Acht offer limited but fun pistes that scratch the skiing itch without the long drive.

You won’t find big mountains in the Eifel. But you will find charm, a lack of crowds, and slopes that are perfect for beginners or anyone chasing a quick-hit winter adventure close to Kaiserslautern.

Getting there: by car, most Eifel ski areas are about 2 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and 3.5 hours from Stuttgart.

Vosges Mountains, France

Cross the border into France, head for the Vosges Mountains, and things get a little more dramatic. The Vosges offer wide-open ridge lines and sweeping downhill runs that feel Alpine without the long drive (or the Alpine prices). Visitors also get a French resort atmosphere without mega-resort crowds, and generally good snow reliability.

La Bresse-Hohneck is the largest ski area, with modern lifts and a surprising amount of really good terrain. Gérardmer offers a quieter, more traditional Frenchmountain experience that is not flashy, but still extremely enjoyable.

Getting there: By car, La Bresse-Hohneck and Gérardmer ski areas are about 3 hours from Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart, and 4 hours from Wiesbaden.

Bavarian Forest – Großer Arber

The Großer Arber offers some of the best non-Alpine terrain in Germany. The mountain has carving-friendly slopes, excellent

grooming, and the best vertical drop (outside the Alps) in Germany. It also has a relaxed, family-oriented culture, and enjoys stronger natural snowfall than most central German hills.

Bonus: the Bavarian Forest is stunning in winter—think frosted trees, quiet valleys, and a distinctly slower pace.

Getting there: By car, the Großer Arber is just under 5 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden and 4 hours from Stuttgart.

Note: Whatever winter sport destination you choose, make sure to check the snow conditions before you go, and to gear up properly. And then enjoy yourself out there!
