Glühwein, which literally translates to ‘glow wine‘, is a staple at every outdoor event throughout the winter months. It lets you continue to take advantage of your convenient location in the heart of Rheinland-Pfalz's wine region without sacrificing any fingers as you’re watching snow fall on the romantically lit Christmas markets you will spend your holiday season at.

And because we know there are days when you just don’t want to go outside but still crave a cup of liquid Christmas joy, here are some recipes with a new twist to make at home: All you need to do is heat the wine, making sure it never boils or the alcohol will boil away, either add all ingredients straight to the wine or put them in a tea filter and let it sit for at least half an hour before reheating. Pour through a strainer or take out bag of spices. Serve hot.

Red Cranberry

If you like sweet and fruity drinks, this variation was made for you.

• 1 bottle of dry red wine of choice

• 500 millilitres cranberry juice

• 80 millilitres orange liquor (Cointreau or Grand Marnier)

• 2 cinnamon sticks

• 1 apple, sliced

• optional: dried cranberries (add before serving)

White Apple

Apple and cinnamon will warm your heart on gloomy afternoons while the rum adds just a hint of beachy sunshine to your cup.

• 1 bottle of dry white wine of choice

• 400 millilitres strong apple tea

• 30 grams fresh ginger, sliced

• 1 organic orange, sliced

• 50 millilitres brown rum

• 3 tablespoons honey

• 2 cinnamon sticks

• 1/3 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 1 apple, thinly sliced (add just before reheating)

MAKE THE MOST OF WINTER SQUASH SEASON

It’s winter squash season in Germany. Known as Kürbis, the same German word used for pumpkin, you can find several varieties filling the baskets at any local grocery store or commissary and lining the stands at the famers markets around town.

Winter squashes are distinguished from summer squashes not because of the time of year they are grown and sold but because of when they are best to eat. Right now they have matured fully and their skins have developed a tough rind. This rind protects them and allows them to be stored throughout the winter, thus “winter squash.”

While there are some winter squashes common in America that can’t be found in Germany, we are particularly lucky because two of the most delicious squashes are the most prevalent over here — hokkaido squash and butternut squash.

Butternut squash is sweet and nutty with a firm texture similar to that of a potato.

Hokkaido squash, also known as Red Kuri, looks like a mini pumpkin and is sweet, moist and dense.

The skin is edible and does not need to be peeled.

Both of these squashes are versatile and can be used in a variety of recipes to enjoy all winter long.

Spiced Hokkaido Squash Soup

You can’t spend a holiday season in Germany without having at least one bowl of hokkaido squash soup. This is a bit labor intensive, but every spoonful will be worth it. Start to finish: 60 minutes

Servings: 6

• 1 medium onion, chopped

• 3 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 hokkaido squash, de-seeded and cut into pieces

• 2 small potatoes, peeled and cut into pieces

• 2 cloves garlic, chopped

• 2 teaspoons curry powder

• 1 teaspoon ground coriander

• 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

• 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 6 cups chicken stock

• Salt and pepper, to taste

Over medium heat, gently saute chopped onions with olive oil in a large saucepan until soft.

Add the chopped hokkaido squash, potatoes, garlic and the four spices to the pan. Cook for about 10 minutes.

Pour in the chicken stock. Begin by just covering the top of the hokkaido pieces with the stock. If you feel it is too thick, you can

add in more later.

Cover and simmer until the squash and potatoes are tender and soft. This should take about 10 to 12 minutes.

Using a hand blender in the pan, puree the squash and potatoes until smooth and creamy. Add in more chicken stock to achieve desired soup texture.

Add salt and pepper to taste.

Ladle the soup into bowls. You can garnish with creme fraiche and croutons if you so choose.

Southwestern Stuffed Hokkaido Squash

Now you can mix the taste of home with this German specialty squash. This recipe is also easily converted to a vegetarian dish just by taking out the ground turkey. Start to finish: 90 minutes

Servings: 4

• 2 hokkaido squashes

• 1 pound ground turkey

• 1 small onion, chopped

• 1/2 medium red bell pepper, chopped

• 1 clove garlic, minced

• 1 tablespoon chili powder

• 1 teaspoon ground cumin

• 2 cups cherry tomatoes, chopped

• 15-ounce can black beans

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• Hot red pepper sauce, to taste

• 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit or 190 degrees Celsius. Lightly coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray.

Cut the hokkaido squashes in half horizontally.

Scoop out and discard seeds. Place the squash cut side down on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until tender, between 30 and 45 minutes.

While the squash is cooking, lightly coat a large skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium.

Add the ground turkey and cook until lightly browned.

Add onion and bell pepper to the skillet, stirring often, and cooking until softened.

Stir in garlic, chili powder and cumin for about 30 seconds.

Stir in tomatoes, beans, salt and several

dashes of hot sauce.

Cover, reduce heat and simmer until the tomatoes are broken down. This should take between 10 and 12 minutes.

When the squashes are tender, take them out of the oven.

Fill the squash halves with the turkey mixture and top with cheese.

Place them back in the oven until the filling is heated through and the cheese is melted, about 5 to 8 minutes.

Curry Beef Stuffed Hokkaido Squash

This incredibly fi lling squash makes for an excellent weeknight meal. The fl avors seem counterintuitive, but they blend together nicely in this dish.

Start to fi nish: 45 minutes

Servings: 2

• 1 hokkaido squash

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1/2 onion, chopped

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 2 cups mushrooms, chopped

• 1/2 pound ground beef

• 2 teaspoons curry powder

• Salt, to taste

• Ground black pepper, to taste

• 2 cups fresh spinach, chopped

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit or 190 degrees Celsius. Lightly coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray.

Cut the hokkaido squash in half horizontally.

Scoop out and discard seeds. Place the squash cut side down on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until tender, between 30 and 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat two tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and add the onion, garlic, mushrooms, beef, curry powder, salt and pepper.

Cook, stirring often, until vegetables are cooked and beef is browned.

Add the spinach and cook until it’s just wilted.

Once the squash is tender, remove it from the oven.

Scoop the filling into the squash halves and serve.

Twice-Baked Butternut Squash

This creamy delight will make your tastebuds and your stomach incredibly happy. Every bite feels decadent despite the dish’s health factor — the perfect treat.

Start to finish: 80 minutes

Servings: 2

• 2 butternut squashes

• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1 yellow onion, chopped

• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

• 8 large sage leaves, finely chopped

• 1/2 cup whole-milk ricotta cheese

• 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt

• 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated

• 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit or 220 degrees Celsius. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.

Slice the stems off the butternut squashes and cut each squash in half lengthwise. Scoop out and discard the seeds.

Place the squash halves cut side down on the lined baking sheet. Roast until the cut side of the squash is tender when pierced with a fork. This should take about 35 to 45 minutes.

While the squashes are roasting, melt the butter in a nonstick pan over low heat. Add the onion and salt and saute until browned at the edges. Stir in the chopped sage and saute another 30 seconds.

Remove from the heat and set aside.

When the squashes are tender, remove them from the oven and turn the cut sides up. Set aside until cool enough to handle. Keep the oven on. Once the squash is cool enough to handle, the insides need to be scooped into a large bowl. With this recipe, we are only refi lling two squash halves.

On these two, leave a 1/2-inch border so they retain their shape. The other two halves can be completely scooped out and their skins discarded.

With a potato masher, mash the roasted squash.

Add in the cooked onions and sage, ricotta cheese, Greek yogurt, parmesan cheese and pepper and thoroughly combine.

Scoop the mixture into the two remaining squash halves and return to the oven until the tops begin to brown. This should take about 20 minutes.

Serve immediately.

WINTER

Before someone can drive on their own, they go through driving school, examinations, drivers license fees, high insurance costs and then they finally get behind the wheel. It can cost upwards of two to three times more to finally drive on your own in Germany as opposed to what it costs in America. It is no wonder, everything related to driving is taken very seriously.

As you drive around Germany, start to notice the little things that make driving a pleasure. Take the painted curbs around some curves for example. That is usually something reserved for professional

racecar drivers, but it is com monplace in most dorfs (towns or villages). Notice on country roads that there are perfect markers with reflectors every 25 meters to guide you along the way at night. Although everyone likes to com plain about all the construction (and there is lots of it!), the roads are extremely well maintained, especially the beloved Autobahn.

As the days get shorter and darker, the cold and wintry weather creeps closer and closer. It is easy to think that you would never get stranded, but seeing someone standing behind the guard rails (as required by law!)

Emergency Kit Necessities

• First aid kit: These are required in Germany, so make sure you have yours all year round. You can purchase a prepackaged first aid kit at gas stations, ADAC, supermarkets and car supply stores.

Reflective vests: The law says you must have one vest for every passenger in the car. You need to have these in the car all year anyway, so pick some up next time you are at the gas station. Safety triangle: We are including this in the list even though you are supposed to have it all year. Double check to make sure you have this in your trunk (and avoid a ticket next time you get pulled over).

Fire extinguisher: Although you may think this is overkill, keep in mind this is an emergency kit. You should hope to never use any of these supplies, yet everyday, people find themselves in situations they thought they wouldn’t. Make sure you purchase a small one that can be kept in your emergency kit. Some spare tire tools come with these so check before your purchase any.

Jumper cables: Either include traditional jumper cables that require another car, or a battery operated jumper cable pack handy for remote areas. It would be terrible to be stuck with a dead battery.

Ponchos and/or a tarp: In case you’re stuck in the rain or need to walk to the nearest shelter, ponchos or a tarp can protect you from precipitation.

Flashlight and extra batteries: Large or small flashlight, make sure you stash extra batteries in your emer-

Water and non-perishable snacks: Keep bottles of water and non-perishable snacks like granola bars, crackers, dried fruit or energy bars for emergency snacks.

• Duct tape: It’s known for being the solution to everything. Keep a roll of it in your emergency kit.

• Utility tool: This could be as simple as a pocket knife.

• Tow rope: If you get stuck, being prepared with a two rope means any vehicle with enough towing power can get you out.

• Blanket: Keep a spare in your car for cold weather emergencies.

Emergency Kit Extras

Cat litter: Keep this one in your trunk during the winter months. It’s great for creating traction between your tire and slick snow or ice.

Cell phone charger: It’s best to try and charge your phone before leaving for a trip, but keep a spare phone charger in your car for times when your phone dies. A car battery should be able to get you enough to place a call for help.

VIENNA

A CUTTING-EDGE PLACE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Vienna at Christmas time is indeed cold and not a place where children under maybe 10 years of age are going to last for very long without complaining. Still, it is a fantastic city to experience during these chilly months whether traveling alone, with a partner, or with the entire family. Travelling toddlers are especially apt to come undone during excessive exposure to cold temperatures so the best advice is to plan indoor activities and get the most out of your Austrian holiday. A plane will get you to Wien in about an hour, but driving will take eight or nine, maximum. Going by train is a popular mode and there are even Flex Bus options that are cheapest of all, if you are willing to put in some extra hours. We flew, with three passengers, for under 300 euro and used public transportation or taxis throughout the four days we spent in this town famous for centuries for being one of the “in” places for all of Europe.

St. Charle's Church (Karlskirche) in Vienna, Austria, at sunrise.

Today, the city is easy to traverse with above- and below-ground trains, trams, U-bahns, and buses on the modernistic public transport system. Check the Wiener Linien website and buy bulk tickets ahead of time to save headaches of long lines or machines that might be out of order. Day trips to Salzburg or a wine tasting excursion are easy to navigate from the local transportation system and you will be back by sundown to continue exploring the inner city.

The Museum Quartier of Vienna is an area near the center of the city where lots of touristic and historical focus is placed. Many types of stimuli have been built here in the past 20 years and within a short walking distance are older, more established museums. Checking online for the museums you want to visit will save time in a queue and maybe sooth the nerves of those little ones you might be taking along on the trip. One website says MUMOK / Museum of Modern Art and ZOOM are both trendy and good for kids who like interactive activities, but we did not make it to these.

A favorite that we visited is the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Museum of Art History, which houses ancient Egyptian antiquities, paintings, sculptures, and tons of both elaborate and intricate works of art from multiple genres. There is a wonderful cafe inside and couches spread throughout the sprawling complex. This alone is a splendid place to spend a complete day.

Gustav Klimt and his blurry artistic boundaries between art and eroticism can be found at the Belvedere Museum while master composers Johann Strauss and Wolfgang Mozart have their lifetime achievements documented in multiple museums.

Other Viennese museums of note are Hofburg House, Albertina, and one spotlighting the life and work of noted psychologist and cultural icon Sigmund Freud. It was Freud, Alfred Adler, Victor Frankl, and other deep thinkers who organized the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society that gained

and the Czech Republic, where he was born.

Christmas Markets in Vienna offer many of the same options as are seen in Deutschland at this time of year. Brown, wooden mini-houses serving meats, cheeses, deserts, and Glühwein will greet you as you enter a lot of the public platz areas of the inner city. Although the main market area is near Belvedere Palace, we actually found a smaller one close to the Gardens of Schoenbrunn Castle that was easy to navigate

and had more to offer than we expected.

We ate eclair cakes, dusted with white powder sugar, and our daughter washed hers down with apple juice at another nice old-themed market close to St. Peter Cathedral. The Baroque-themed church that stands there today is perhaps the most recognizable structure in Vienna and was built in the early 1700s, but its roots date back before 1200.

Ever heard of the Lipizzaner stallions?

These massive and beautiful horses are trained at the local Spanish Riding School in Vienna and perform daily, have morning exercise walk-throughs, and are part of other events offered daily. There is a tie-in to American World War II General George S. Patton and any interaction with these horses will appeal to all ages.

Heavy doses of wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut, sausage dishes, and traditional hearty foods are served in Vienna restaurants, with so many customs and traditions still being shared with neighboring countries. Hotels are middle-range pricey but our family usually checks out apartment rentals whenever we plan trips throughout Europe.

Remember, daytime temperatures around late December in Vienna average 40 degrees Farenheit / 4 Celsius but it will get colder at night. Pack proper clothing including gloves and hats for extra protection on hands and ears. Cold weather should not deter you from diving in to this tantalizing city.

Kaerntner, Mariahilfer, and Graben are a few of the numerous shopping streets that stretch throughout the Vienna landscape and feature choices from high-end outlets to less expensive stores. You can trace the dynastic history of the AustroHungarian monarchy or explore how the Italian poet Petrarch or the German statesman and writer Goethe had huge followings in Vienna. It all depends on what piques your interests but be sure, Vienna is a city that has always been on the cutting edge and a trend-setter nation respected and admired in all of Europe.

WINTER SKI & SNOWBOARD DESTINATIONS

If you are lucky enough to find yourself living in Europe, you should make sure you experience one of its crown jewels, the Alps. Here is a collection of can’t miss destinations for your next ski or snowboard adventure.

BEST VARIETY

Portes du Soleil, France/ Switzerland

BEST HIDDEN GEM

Andermatt, Switzerland

If you are looking for a place that is never crowded and is lacking the hustle and bustle of the big resorts in the Alps, but still have the mountain, snow and stunning views, try Andermatt. Located next to the Gotthard pass, Andermatt is the ski town no one has heard of. Snow is aplenty and every type of terrain is available. The Gemsstock offers extreme terrain while Sedrun offers family friendly cruising. The resorts are connected by the Glacier Express train (included in your lift ticket), which is an adventure in itself as it climbs through the Alpine winter wilderness. Andermatt is not for the late night crowd. Things quiet down around 8 p.m. here. For the traditional Swiss chalet

If you are looking for endless variety, Portes du Soleil, France, should be on your short list. The literal English translation is “the Doors of the Sun” but translates to “the Gateway to the Sun” and is situated between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland. An impressive thirteen resorts makes up the ski region and what is more impressive is your lift ticket covers all of them! It is easy to be intimidated by the second largest ski resort in the world (Les Trois Vallees, France, is number one) with over 200 lifts in the system that links all the resorts and the fact that it straddles two countries (France and Switzerland). And yes, your passport is required when you are skiing in case you don’t make it back to your country of origin at the end of the day and have to commandeer transportation back.

I enjoyed one of the best powder days I have ever had in Châtel, France, when we received three meters of snow in a four-day period (snorkel depth!). The steep and deep was plentiful for advanced skiers. It doesn’t all have to be about powder and fast skiing. There is so much variety, even the most amateur skier can enjoy the endless cruisers going from

resort to resort while you explore the Haute-Savoie region.

The resort is so expansive, the best bet for a multi-day trip is to pick your resort for the day and take the free bus to it. If you are looking to see endless valleys while you are getting to your destination, you can ski to your chosen resort, but be aware – you may take half the day getting there. The variety of this amazing resort should not be taken as a negative. It definitely is not. In one single week trip, you can experience what most people need three or four trips to accomplish. Keep in mind you can get a six day pass for about 360 euro. Compare that to resorts in the states like Vail in Colorado which is a fraction of the size.

Avoriaz, France, is the most modern skiing/boarding of all the resorts and has accommodations totaling 14,000 beds. Morzine is the largest French town with a traditional market center and offers plenty of easy and intermediate skiing right from the village. Châtel is right on the border of Switzerland offering two main areas and easily links to Torgon and Morgins, Switzerland. Les Crosets and Champéry are Swiss villages with plenty of tradition. Les Crosets boasts large fun parks for the kids.

Travel — Make it in five-hour drive from the Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden areas and about four and a half from the Stuttgart area.

experience, try the Hotel Schweizerhof. If you are looking for an economical stay (think high-end youth hostel, but very clean), try Sust Lodge am Gotthard. Travel — From Wiesbaden and Kaiserslautern, you can make it between four and a half to five hours. From Stuttgart, it is about three and a half hours.

BEST DAY TRIP

La Bresse, France

Maybe you don’t have a week or even four days to get down to the Alps, but you want to take the family skiing a bit closer to home. Try La Bresse in the Vosges mountains in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. The mountains are not quite as big as the Alps, but with ample snowmaking, terrain parks and even hotel options at the base of the mountain, families can

have a great time carving up the slopes here. A single day pass is only 24 euro and ski and snowboard school rates are reasonable as well. There is cross-country skiing available too.

Travel — From Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart, you can make it in just under three hours and about three and a half hours from Wiesbaden.

BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

I pick Garmisch-Partenkirchen as my best bang for the buck for two simple reasons: VAT forms and U.S. dollars! It is rare that you can go to an amazing European Alps destination and take advantage of the logistical support that goes along with serving overseas. It can account for huge savings, especially if you end up going on a little shopping spree at one of the local outdoor shops. Add onto that the local Armed Forces Recreation Center at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, where you pay in dollars and you have saved yourself some serious coin. All active duty and civilian personnel serving in Europe can book a vacation at the Edelweiss, which is a full service resort.

A host of the Winter Olympics, various World Cups and endless other top-tier events, Garmisch offers skiing, boarding and much more. The Zugspitze,

BEST SNOW

Zermatt, Switzerland

Known as one of the most reliable resorts for snow in the Alps, Zermatt sits up high in the Swiss Alps at 3,802 meters (12,473 feet). Due to the high elevation, Zermatt doesn’t have an opening or closing date because you can ski all year round. The car-free resort town, situated next to the Matterhorn, gets storms from the east and south as they barrel through the Alps, ensuring a steady supply of fluff and more grins per run.

Zermatt can be pricey, as you are both paying in Swiss Francs and highend resort accommodations. If you are looking to save some money, you could also look at staying in Cervinia, Italy, which connects to Zermatt and uses the euro currency, but if you are going to do this trip, do it right and stay in Zermatt (even if you only go once).

Travel — From Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart, you can make it in about 6 and a half hours and approximately seven hours from Wiesbaden.

Germany’s highest peak, offers a serious tram ride to the top with plenty of highalpine sliding on the glacier. A number of other smaller ski areas are perfect for the family, like Hausberg, Kreuzeck and Alpspitze, which are interconnected.

Time your stay right and catch one of the many ski jump events at Grosse Olympiaschanze. While you are there, hike up to the Partnachklamm, an amazing cavern hike along the mountain stream, the Partnach.

Travel — From Wiesbaden and Kaiserslautern, you can make it in about five hours (if you don’t hit traffic) and a short three and a quarter hours from Stuttgart.

BEST EVERYTHING

Sankt Anton, Austria

Whether you are looking for epic terrain, a ridiculous party scene, breathtaking views or amazing hotels, Sankt Anton am Arlberg has it all. To begin with, the resort that is credited for its part in inventing skiing, is part of Ski Arlberg in the Tyrolean region in Austria, which means when you buy your lift ticket, you also gain access to 88 lifts and 305 kilometers of pistes. Resorts such as Lech, Zuers, St. Christoph, Stuben, Warth and Schroecken are all interconnected and offer a wide variety of terrain for the whole family.

To start with, you can find extreme steeps as well as lazy cruisers at St. Anton. You can also find a vast network of trams (seilbahn) and gondolas (gondelbahn) that can get you quickly to another area of the resort. In fact, take a minute to look at the engineering that goes into these amazing lifts. It’s not a bad idea to enlist the help of one of the many famous ski/snowboard schools no matter what level you are. You’ll pick up some great pointers as well as have a guide that knows exactly where to go for the best skiing/boarding experience.

If you are looking to let loose a bit, Apres-Ski time (anytime after 2 p.m.) has lots of on-mountain sun decks and bars. Keep your eyes open at the end of the day on your last run down the mountain for options, but a can’t miss is the Mooserwirt, known for its great music and packed sun deck. Be sure to store your equipment in a safe spot as things get a bit interesting when the bar closes at 8 p.m. For dinner time, the town of St. Anton has lots of great options from pizza (try Pizza Pomodoro) and sushi to typical Tyrolean fare (Restaurant Maximilian), but take heed… always make a reservation for dinner!

Late night clubs are a plenty in St. Anton as well. Many of the restaurants turn into hot night spots that are open late into the night. For lodging, holiday periods will be on the pricey side (as with all resorts), but non-holiday periods are actually quite reasonable considering the quality and location of this worldfamous resort.

Travel — From Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden areas it takes about five hours and just over three hours from Stuttgart.

Every road that leads to Monschau is a good one. Nestled next to the Belgian border in Germany’s Eifel region, the little town is surrounded by rolling hills and deep, wooded valleys. It is an ideal spot for day trippers and weekend voyagers, especially during the Christmas season.

Beautiful Monschau

To put it plainly, Monschau is as about a visually appealing town as you’ll find in Germany (which is saying something). Geography dictates a lot of this beauty. Since the bulk of the old town is located along the banks of the Rur River in a steep gorge, there’s not much room for sprawl. As a result, the village center is packed with cute shops, restaurants and old buildings.

History has a little bit to do with Monschau’s attractiveness, too. Even though the town has been around for roughly a millennium, it was in danger – along with nearly every other town in the area — from being destroyed during World War II. Because U.S. forces were able to secure the town quickly in 1944, it was spared much of the damage that ravaged nearby towns in Belgium and Germany.

There is also a nice circuit path that goes around the city, and provides great views of the Rur river and the valley in which Monschau sits.

The town itself also offers a lot of variety. You can visit parks, stroll the castle walls, or sit on benches and admire the river. Monschau also has an excellent selection of shops and restaurants.

What to do

There is no shortage of fun activities in Monschau. Because it is so hilly, the territory around the town is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Walkers, hikers and cyclists can take advantage of many nearby trails.

Must-see: Monschau Christmas market

Great Christmas markets can be found throughout Germany. What makes the Monschau experience so much fun is that the entire town seems to morph into one giant market. Which is to say, it’s not just limited to stalls and faux pines that suddenly end. It’s everything. Hotels, taverns, galleries, and artisan studios all seem to be part of the fun, too. And as evening falls, the lights are magnificent.

This year, the Christmas market is open for weekends, including Fridays, from November 28. Opening times are Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m - 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Getting there

By car, Monschau is slightly less than three hours northwest of Kaiserslautern, and a bit more than an hour north of Spangdahlem.

GRINDELWALD SCHLITTELBAHN

WORLD’S LONGEST SLED RIDE

As Old Man Winter will be visiting us soon, the skiers and snowboarders are anxiously awaiting the opening of resorts all over Europe to enjoy the winter wonderland. For those of you preferring a more slow-paced approach to outdoor winter fun, we have just the right option for you: Grindelwald Schlittelbahn, or Grindelwald sled run.

Sledding is normally associated with taking the kids on a small hill, riding down for a very short time and having to schlep back up over and over again, which can be a bit exhausting. One of my favorite sled adventures is only a few hours away from the Kaiserslautern Military Community area.

The quaint village of Grindelwald, Switzerland, boasts the world’s longest sled run which is 12.5 km long and known as the Big Pintenfritz. I first took this sled run a few years ago on a weekend ski/snowboard adventure and was hooked within a few minutes.

The trail is not just open terrain but is carved out and groomed for sleds. There are steep descents, banking turns, wide and narrow passages, flat areas where you have to

kick the sled forward, and a variety of other surprises along the way that will keep your adrenaline in high gear. You have the ability to slow down with your feet or use a sled with breaks to stay in your comfort zone, regulating your sled to your most comfortable speed.

This is a great activity for families with kids, groups, and anyone who wants to get out and enjoy the snow this winter from a different perspective.

Besides the Big Pintenfritz sled run, there are three other sled runs which start from various points on the mountain. Check out www.grindelwaldbus.ch/en/sledging which shows a large map of the different sled runs and other information, well worth reading before you plan your trip.

Be sure to plan in some time to visit

the village of Grindelwald. Although it is a small village, there are many restaurants with traditional Swiss dishes like rosti and fondue, which you will truly enjoy at the end of your active day. Shop for typical souvenirs like Swiss Army Knives, cow bells, watches, Swiss chocolate, cheese, and Black Forest cake in small shops while enjoying the views of the awe-inspiring mountain ranges of the Jungfrau, Eiger, and Moench all around you.

Grindelwald also has a vast variety of accommodations to suit the needs of travelers on a tight budget, those who want to splurge a bit, and everything in between. From luxury hotels with spas to chalets, apartments, and hostels — you will find the right place to stay. One piece of advice: Be sure you book well in advance.

Great view of the snowy massive rock in sunlight above Grindelwald valley, Bernese Oberland.

THINGS TO CONSIDER:

Check snow and weather conditions first thing in the morning. High winds, fog, and snow can take you by surprise within minutes.

Check for updates on transportation fares, rental fees as well as closures due to weather.

What to wear: Warm clothing, a hat, helmet, gloves or mittens, snow pants, winter jacket, snow boots, and goggles.

What to bring: First aid kit, sunscreen, water, snacks, a change of socks, gloves, hat, cell phone, and euro cash. Plastic is not accepted everywhere.

DOS AND DON’TS

Do make sure that everyone knows how to steer, slow down and stop the sled. Do be aware of sleds behind, passing or in front of you. Most injuries occur during crashes with other riders.

Don’t wear a scarf or any loose clothing or jewelry. They can get tangled up on the sled especially during a wipe out.

Gold Rush Stars headline the first-ever Kaiserslautern Mineral Days –

A dazzling new event for fans of gems, fossils & gold

Sparkling crystals, brilliant gemstones, and real gold nuggets: the first-ever Kaiserslautern Mineral Days are about to debut, bringing a spectacular weekend experience for collectors, jewelry lovers, and families alike.

The event will be held in the Gartenschau Kaiserslautern Exhibition Hall and is organized by Mark Schneider of Neustadt an der Weinstraße – a veteran show organizer with more than 20 years of experience and passion for minerals and gemstones.

Over 60 international exhibitors will present their most beautiful and rare specimens, from skyblue Larimar, the “Stone of the Caribbean,” to crystal-clear quartz from Brazil and rare discoveries from Germany’s Palatinate region.

This year’s focus highlights minerals from North Africa, featuring radiant red vanadinite and deep-blue barite crystals from the Atlas Mountains. Also on display will be extraordinary pieces from the Himalayas –including aquamarines and colorful tourmalines found at over 16,000 feet.

A major attraction of the show is the appearance of Andreas Macherey and his sons, the popular stars of the DMAX hit series “Gold Rush in Australia.” The charismatic gold prospectors bring the spirit of adventure to Kaiserslautern — along with their real gold nuggets from Australia, Alaska, and other parts of the world. Visitors can meet the team, admire these rare natural gold pieces up close, and even purchase an authentic nugget to take home.

Guests will also have the chance to design custom jewelry on site with their favorite gemstones –a perfect opportunity to create a unique gift or one-of-a-kind wedding rings.

The Kaiserslautern Mineral Days promise a great experience for the whole family: children will be amazed by glittering crystals, parents can explore natural treasures, and collectors will enjoy lively exchanges with experts. Food and refreshments will be available, and convenient parking is provided at the Gartenschau venue.

Organizer Mark Schneider says the new event fulfills a long-held dream:

“I’ve always wanted to create a meeting place in Kaiserslautern for people who appreciate the beauty of nature — from fossils and gemstones to gold. A place where enthusiasts can share their passion,” Schneider explains.

As a special gesture of appreciation, U.S. and German military personnel receive free admission — a thank-you to the American service members and their families stationed in the region.

One thing I’ve always been good at, if I may brag a bit, is selecting gifts for friends and family — even for people like my father who seem to have everything. If you haven’t purchased any holiday gifts or are totally at a loss as to what to get for your signifi cant other or loved ones, I’d like to share some personal tips as well as ideas from others on how to select that perfect and meaningful present.

Know your audience.

More often than not, we select a gift for others based on what we would want rather than what they would want.

Take a step back and really think about the person. Have they already mentioned something they would want? If not, the next thing to do is to think about that person — what are their interests, hobbies, etc.

What are their interests?

What do they enjoy?

Although it seems logical, we don’t always consider the hobbies of our loved ones. Does your spouse like to fix things? Maybe there’s a tool they’ve wanted for a while or they need a new tool chest. Have they mentioned something they might be interested in starting, such as fishing or scrapbooking? A subscription to magazines or even

SELECTING A MEANINGFUL HOLIDAY GIFT

The holiday season is upon us, which means it’s time to start thinking about what to get your spouse or loved ones. If you’re like me, you have that one family member who is simply impossible to buy for. Does “I don’t need anything this year, just you” sound familiar?

a beginner book on the subject could help. For example, when my sister was learning how to knit, I bought her a how-to book as well as a few different kinds of yarn. This gave her an opportunity to learn more about the various styles of knitting, the fabric and how to design new items.

Give them an experience.

The actual gift doesn’t always have to be tangible.

“If they have tons of stuff then try to do an experience — a pass to the zoo, a sports game, etc.,” suggested Katie Reynolds from Miesenbach.

Do they like music? Maybe their favorite musician or band has a concert or event coming up they might enjoy. Do they like art or history?

Buy them tickets to a museum they’ve always wanted to go to but haven’t had a chance. Do they love watching sports? Instead of getting them a jersey or another element of sports paraphernalia, maybe think about a subscription to a magazine or sport network. You could also consider sending them on a scavenger hunt for their gift. The search for the gift can add to the adventure and make the experience memorable.

Sometimes simple is the best option.

Thanks to websites like Pinterest and Etsy, you are all but sure to find simple answers to your dilemma. Do your in-laws have a favorite vacation destination or location they love to visit? Think about framing a picture

or drawing of some of these places. What about a formal family picture? No need to break the bank on this one either. Ask a friend to help with pictures, upload the picture to a userfriendly website like Shutterfly to edit photos, make canvas prints or create a picture album. It’s a heartfelt gift that never goes out of style.

Do it yourself.

The holidays can get a bit busy so this may not be a great option, but if you have the time and resources, sometimes the most meaningful gifts are the ones we make ourselves. Referring back to Pinterest, there are boards for everything and anything you can think of with regards to DIY gifts. From creating a family scrapbook, mounting pictures in a frame or even creating a cookbook of all your family recipes as a keepsake, help is there for you! Additionally, you can also find some great ideas if you can’t think of any yourself.

Home is where the military sends us.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? One of the things my husband and I do is send trinkets from each new location we live. Karlie Gaspard from Birkenfeld agreed, explaining that since she’s been living in Germany, her and her husband have been sending German-themed gifts to family and friends. Of course, if you’ve been in Germany for more than a year you may have already thought of this, but you

should also consider gifts from the places you visit while you’re living overseas. If you’re planning a vacation soon or are about to go on one, think about things that your family or loved ones might enjoy that you can only get in those destinations.

Consider gift cards.

I shudder at the thought of this because I’ve always thought of these as impersonal, but sometimes they can be very thoughtful.

“Last year we got my parents a Home Depot gift card cause they needed to get work done on the house,” explained Brooke Sands from Bann.

Does that special someone really need a break? A gift card or certificate for a massage or spa day would be appropriate. What if you know a store the person likes to shop at but you aren’t quite sure what to get them? This is when a gift card would be appropriate.

Use the internet.

There are a variety of great websites that can help with selecting a gift. One of my go-to sites is www. uncommongoods.com.

This site not only has awesome gift suggestions, but you are also likely to find some of the most unique presents you’ve ever seen. If all else fails, check to see if they’ve made an Amazon Wish List. Simply go to www.amazon.com and search for their name or email under the Wish List section.

BAKING WITH YOUR CHILD

DEVELOPMENTAL BENEFITS

For gobble gobble and ho ho ho! The holiday season is upon us and you know what that means! Time to pack on the holiday pounds with baked goods galore!

Why not make the experience of baking your holiday goodies a developmentally beneficial one for your child? Aside from noshing on some delicious bites, here are some bonus benefits of baking.

Heavy work. Shopping at the grocery store is an ideal motor warm up for your child. Let them push the cart, pass you the flour sugar and other items from the lower shelves, help carry bags if appropriate, help unload the car, and help unload purchased ingredients and put them on the counter in preparation for baking. By using our big muscle groups, we enrich a child sense of readiness for learning as well as overall motor coordination.

Sensory input. Even your littlest child can participate in baking by experiencing the sensory aspects of this activity. For example, you can let a baby hit the bowl with a wooden spoon to make a drum, swirl some flour on their highchair tray or simply smell the different items such as the vanilla, sugar and butter.

Sequencing skills. School-age children can beef up their awareness of sequencing by baking. This means first understanding the steps and then executing the steps. You can simplify recipes by just using single words or drawing pictures in advance. Older children can print out the directions, read them aloud and cross them off when completed.

Math skills. I am not going to act like I am good at math, but I sure understand one needs a basic understanding for successful baking. You can challenge your older children by taking out all of the measuring cups, jars, spoons and asking them to problem solve how many of the quarter cups would you need for a whole cup of sugar, or how many teaspoons you would need for a tablespoon. Older children can even work on division — e.g. the bag of flour is 500 grams, what percentage do we need to get 300 grams.

Bilateral integration. 50 cent phrase alert! This simply means using both hands together in a coordinated manner. All children can improve upon this

skill through the baking process. For example holding a box of sugar with one hand and pouring it into a measuring cup in the other hand. Little ones can take a glob of dough and roll it with a rolling pin. You can even have them roll the dough into a snake and practice cutting little pieces with scissors or a butter knife. Who cares if you use that glob of dough? It is just a fun way for them to participate in the activity.

Safety awareness. You can use kitchen time as an opportunity to teach or reinforce safety skills. For example, you can have a little child tell you what is a no no in the kitchen: Touching the stove, opening the refrigerator, touching knives, etc. Older children can learn about more sophisticated safety topics, such as how to safely use a toaster, how to avoid having appliances near water, the safest way to hold a knife, etc.

Social communication skills. Another very important bonus to engaging in a functional activity with your child is the way it naturally lends itself to open communication. When we are doing something with our hands, we are more able to share our emotions, express our thoughts and to communicate in a backand-forth manner. Your teenager may open up about a new crush or your fourth grader may share some anxiety about performing

the school play. It doesn’t matter if you are baking bread, making a pie, or even busting out a roll of ready bake cookie dough. What matters is spending quality time with your child by doing a functional and festive activity together. Wishing you a happy kick off to the holiday season!

GERMAN CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

HOLIDAY FOOD

If you love the smell of cookies, you have come to the right place. Many Germans set aside multiple evenings throughout the month to bake traditional fruitcakes, called “Stollen,” gingerbread cookies, called “Lebkuchen” and “Plaetzchen,” Christmas cookies.

NIKOLAUSTAG

(ST. NICHOLAS DAY)

Dec. 6 is Nikolaustag. On the eve of Dec. 5, children put a shoe or boot outside the door to be filled by St. Nikolaus with treats for those who were good and twigs for those who were naughty.

ADVENT CALENDARS

Whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s, or some other popular winter celebration, ‘tis the season for celebrating.

If you think Americans are the only people who know how to light a yule log, think again.

Germans practically invented Christmas. This country pulls out stops even Kris Kringle doesn’t have time for. From the extravagant Christmas markets to steaming glühwein, there is enough festive cheer to warm even the scroogiest heart.

For Americans abroad interested in reading up on the local celebrations, here are a few German traditions that are worth delving into this holiday season. Photo

CHRISTMAS TREES

rom cardboard pop outs to traditional Advent wreaths with 24 little gifts attached, the month of December in Germany is all about the countdown. Many Germans put a fresh fir wreath with four candles out at the beginning of the month, sometimes decorated with baubles and sweets.

Each Sunday in December before Christmas, families gather to light a new candle on the wreath. You can find Advent calendars for children at the local supermarkets, and keep an eye out for those wreaths!

HEILIGABEND

On Christmas Eve, Christkind, literally Christ-child, delivers the gifts.

Instead of the nail-biting 12-hour wait for Santa Claus, children in Germany open their main course of gifts that night. Christmas Day is reserved for religious services and quiet family time.

Germans were the first people to introduce the “tree of life” into their holiday traditions. Many Americans have trees up and running by Dec. 1, but Germans usually put their trees up on Christmas Eve. The adults banish the children from the room while they decorate the tree. Instead of spending the week between Christmas and New Year’s undoing their decor, the Germans enjoy their trees until Jan. 1 or even Jan. 6, also known as King’s Day in Germany. Remember to set your trees outside for the council tree pickup, which arrives sometime after Jan. 6 to dispose of your old tree.

CAROLING

Sometime between Dec. 27 and Jan. 6, which is King’s Day, boys and girls take a day to dress up as kings and move through the village caroling. Traditionally there are four children, three dressed as Magi and one carrying a star on a stick. They collect money and mark the houses they visit with white chalk.

Whatever your holiday traditions, dig into the rich local heritage Germany offers during the Christmas season and celebrate with your friends — American and German style!

HOLIDAY ALTERNATIVES TO TURKEY

If it seems like each holiday meal has become repetitive or if you simply want to try something a little different for your next big gathering, here a few recipes that can be used as alternatives to the standard turkey dinner.

Turkey is traditional and maintains a familiarity with many of those who love to cook, but mixing things up can spark interest when families and friends gather during the holidays and can also be a source of good memories to reflect on in later years.

Lemon Pepper Mackerel

Start to finish: 1 hour

Servings: 8

• 3 large mackerel fish

• 2 tablespoons butter with infused basil

• 2 teaspoons lemon pepper seasoning, mixed with crushed

• 1 jar hollandaise sauce

Heat the oven to 350 degree Fahrenheit.

Rinse the fish and pat dry before lying them side-by-side on metal or glass baking trays.

Spread butter evenly over both sides of each of the fish, then handsprinkle the lemon pepper mix atop both of the buttered sides of the fish.

Place fish in the oven and bake 20 minutes.

After 20 minutes, remove from the oven and liberally spread the hollandaise sauce onto both sides.

Replace in the oven and continue baking at 350 F for 20 more minutes.

Start to finish: 2 1/2 hours, once thawed

Servings: 8

• 5-pound roast

• 2 whole garlic bulbs, chopped

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon pepper

• 3 rosemary sprigs

• 4 potatoes, chopped

• 4 carrots, chopped

Thaw and/or let roast set in a refrigerator for at least 24 hours, then set out for 30 minutes prior to preparation.

Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Carve small slices into the meat all around the exterior. Stuff each slit with pieces of chopped garlic.

The garlic should be distributed evenly around and throughout the expanse of the roast.

Once the meat is cut and infused with the garlic pieces, liberally sprinkle salt and pepper all over the top, then flip it over and do the same to the bottom side.

Flip the roast back upright and prepare to bake by placing inside a roasting bag. The roast can be cooked without a bag, but using one will create a gravy juice that can be poured over the meat when serving.

Inside the bag, sprinkle a few rosemary sprigs all around the meat and add the cut potatoes and carrots before sealing the package.

If you don’t use a roasting bag, simply follow the same steps and cook instead in the roasting pan.

Place the roast in the oven. Using a meat thermometer to check temperature, bake the roast until the temperature of the middle of the roast is 160 F, approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Spiraled Ham

Start to finish: 2 hours

Servings: 8

• 5-pound spiraled ham

• 1/2 cup brown sugar

• 1 can pineapples, sliced and circular

Heath the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Place the ham in a baking pan and put scattered cloves inside the various layers of the spiraled ham. Next, sprinkle brown sugar on top of the ham and pat all over the surface.

Open the can of pineapple and pour the juice all across the entire ham, including into the various layers.

Then cover the ham with the whole pineapple slices.

Cook for 60 to 90 minutes, turning and basting periodically while it cooks so the ham doesn’t dry out.

Cornish Game Hens

Start to finish: 2 hours

Servings: 8

• 4 cornish game hens

• 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

• 1 teaspoon seasoned salt

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon pepper

• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wash the hens well in a sink and pat dry with a paper towel. Hens need to be dried well before other ingredients are applied.

Rub or brush each hen with olive oil. Sprinkle a light covering of seasoned salt, followed by salt, pepper and garlic powder, sparingly. Be sure to turn the birds over during preparation to ensure full covering with all the seasonings.

Cook for approximately 70 to 90 minutes, checking to ensure the birds are cooking through completely and are not overcooking.
