BAYEUX, France — Master Sgt. (Ret.) Charles Norman Shay, a highly decorated combat medic who served in both World War II and the Korean War, was formally inducted into the Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3) during a bedside ceremony in Bayeux, France, on November 19, 2025.
Shay, a member of the Penobscot Nation of Maine, is widely regarded as one of the most distinguished Native American Soldiers of World War II.
Drafted in 1943 at age 19, he trained as a combat medic and joined the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division.
On June 6, 1944, he was among the first wave to land on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion. Under intense enemy fire and the rapidly rising tide, Shay repeatedly waded into the surf to rescue wounded Soldiers, pulling them to safety and administering lifesaving care. His heroism that morning earned him the Silver Star, one of the U.S. Army’s highest decorations for valor.
Following the Normandy landings, Shay continued through the European campaign, serving in major battles including Aachen, the Hürtgen Forest, and the Ardennes.
He was later captured and held as a prisoner of war until liberation in 1945.
After World War II, Shay reenlisted and went on to serve in the Korean War with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. His courage while treating and evacuating wounded Soldiers resulted in multiple Bronze Star Medals with the “V” device recognizing his repeated acts of valor.
Throughout his distinguished career, Shay also received the French Legion of Honour in recognition of his role in the liberation of France.
Brig. Gen. Roger S. Giraud, Commanding General, U.S. Army Medical Readiness Command–Europe, reflected on Shay’s legacy during the presentation.
“It is a profound honor to present Master Sergeant (Retired) Charles Norman Shay with the Order of Military Medical Merit,” Giraud said. “His extraordinary courage as a combat medic on D-Day and his unwavering commitment to saving lives under extreme danger embody the highest ideals of Army Medicine. Master Sergeant Shay’s actions saved countless Soldiers and left an enduring mark on our Army and on history. His legacy of bravery, compassion, and selfless service makes him richly deserving of this distinguished award.”
The ceremony was made possible through close coordination with the

Normandy Institute. Dorothea de La Houssaye, who has long supported Shay and championed efforts to preserve the memory of Allied veterans in Normandy, assisted in organizing the event and in ensuring that Shay received the recognition he earned. Her efforts, alongside those of her team, helped bring together the Army medical community, Shay’s family, and local caretakers for this significant moment.
Marie-Pascale Legrand, Shay’s longtime caregiver, also spoke about her dedication to supporting him in his later years.
“We are free today because of men like Charles,” Legrand said. “Caring for him is an honor. We owe a great debt to these veterans who sacrificed so much.”
The Order of Military Medical Merit recognizes individuals who have made exceptional, lasting contributions to the Army Medical Department. Shay’s induction reflects not only his heroic wartime service, but also his decades-long dedication to remembrance and education.
Now residing in France, Shay has spent many years sharing his story with Soldiers, veterans, and visitors along the Normandy coast. He is especially known for leading annual remembrance moments on Omaha Beach, where he honors the fallen and highlights the contributions of Native American service members.
Shay’s niece, Dawn Kelly, shared what the moment meant to their family.
“He means so much to me,” Kelly said. “I’m grateful to be here with him now.”
U.S. Army Europe and Africa leadership presented the Order of Medical Merit to Shay at his bedside. The intimate setting underscored both the significance of the moment and the profound respect he was held in across the Army medical community.
Shay’s legacy as a medic, a warrior, and a tireless advocate for remembrance continues to inspire generations of Soldiers and medical professionals throughout the force.

Holiday season is approaching fast! Nowadays, it is so easy to find the perfect gifts online and have them shipped to Germany.
If you receive gifts in your APO mailbox, please make sure that these items are not restricted or prohibited. German law and U.S. Forces regulations prohibit many items from being imported into the country. The reason for these import restrictions is based in German law on the protection of the environment and human health, children and youth, industrial property rights, as well as public safety or the democratic order.
Things you can order online or by mail order, or relatives and friends send to you could be banned items under these laws. Banned items include, for example, controlled substances, medication, vitamins and nutritional supplements, unauthorized fireworks, cultural assets, food and feed containing meat or milk, plants, plant parts, fruits and seeds, animals
(including products from endangered species), weapons and/or ammunition without the necessary German license, and counterfeits of trademarked products and pirate copies (this list is nonexhaustive).
Furthermore, the import through military mail of rationed items, such as certain alcoholic beverages, cigarettes (including e-cigarettes and vaping products) and other tobacco products, coffee, and coffee products (this list is non-exhaustive) is prohibited.
Please see AEAR 550-175 Section 1-6 for detailed information on prohibited and restricted items.
If items are shipped to you using APO or a commercial carrier, USPS provides valuable information on mailings to Germany at https://pe.usps.com/text/imm/ fh_011.htm. More information is available at: https://www. zoll.de/EN/Private-individuals/ Postal_consignments_internet_ order/Shipments-from-a-non-EUcountry/Restrictions/restrictions_ node.html or from your local customs office. Please also bear in mind that gifts need to be personal

and in non-commercial quantities. When importing gifts from outside of the EU into Germany by an international parcel service, there is a potential of saving money. When entering the shipping options, please ensure you select that you will be clearing the goods through customs yourself. Otherwise, the carrier will
automatically handle the import, and you will have to pay customs duties and import taxes. These customs duties and taxes are not refundable! After making the Self Clearance then proceed to your military customs office servicing your garrison to obtain AEA Form 550-175A (Import Certificate). For final customs clearance, you will
have to travel to the German customs office where the parcel is being held.
Keep your festive spirits high and avoid unpleasant surprises! Make sure that you don’t receive prohibited items in your APO mailbox and use AEA Form 550-175A for savings when shipping with an international parcel service.

Airmen from the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron configured a C-130H Hercules aircraft into a mission-ready aeromedical evacuation layout Nov. 20, enabling a NATO medical evaluation course to conduct its culminating mock assessment.
The 86th AES, supported by a Critical Care Air Transport Team from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and a field ambulance team from the U.S. Army’s 16th Sustainment Brigade, set the stage for the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine’s Medical Evaluation Course.
The MEDEVAL is a five-day course designed to develop certified medical evaluators who can assess Alliance medical units using standardized criteria. Throughout the week, students study how to evaluate personnel, equipment, documentation and procedural readiness across different medical modules. The training culminates in a mock evaluation, giving participants the opportunity to put their new skills into practice in a realistic, mission-focused environment.
For this iteration’s mock evaluation, the 86th AES set up the entire training scenario. Preparation began the day prior, when crews worked to transform the aircraft into a fully operational AE platform, installing litters, securing stanchions and completing the configuration required for a simulated highcapacity medical evacuation mission.
“Yesterday, we had the entire squadron out here loading 30 mannequins and setting the aircraft up from forward to aft,” said Maj. Amanda Peterson, 86th AES assistant director of operations. “Really, this is what we do every day, so it didn’t take much prep beyond the setup and making sure the crew understood NATO’s objectives for the evaluation.”
Throughout the mock evaluation, 86th AES Airmen walked students through their processes, explained patient movement procedures and answered questions about how they operate in a NATO environment.
The training provided an opportunity for the 86th AES crews to engage directly with

medical personnel from across the Alliance.
As conversations developed, AES personnel gained insight into how partner nations perform similar missions, strengthening their understanding of NATO standards and the practical realities of multinational operations.
“By the end of the day, everyone was having conversations and sharing experiences,” Peterson said. “Those relationships make it easier to work together on an aircraft and help build the foundation we need for future missions.”
Beyond building relationships, working alongside NATO students also gave the 86th AES an opportunity to reinforce the interoperability required for multinational medical operations.
“The biggest challenges usually come

down to language and terminology,” Peterson said. “But once we talk through those differences, it becomes a great opportunity to exchange knowledge and understand how our partners approach the same mission sets.”
The event offered valuable insight into how partner nations meet common medical requirements and how NATO evaluators assess those capabilities. The opportunity to compare processes and exchange knowledge helped deepen the sense of collaboration across the Alliance.
“It’s rewarding to be at a point where I learned this job and now get to teach it to our partners,” said Staff Sgt. Joshua Hunter, 86th AES flight instructor. “Seeing how they work and sharing how we work helps all of us grow. We’re going to need
each other down the line.”
The mock evaluation showcased the 86th AES’s ability to generate a realistic, highfidelity training environment in support of NATO’s medical readiness efforts.
“Events like this not only help certify more evaluators, but also get everyone on the same page and align our expectations,” said Maj. Justin Stein, 86th Operations Group flight nurse evaluator. “Moving forward, we’re going to have to work together. We’ll need each other for whatever mission comes next.”
Through shared learning, hands-on collaboration and a commitment to interoperability, the 86th AES continues to reinforce its critical role within the Alliance and its readiness to operate seamlessly alongside NATO partners whenever called upon.

Command Sgt. Maj. Randy Rivera took responsibility as the U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz senior enlisted leader in a change of responsibility ceremony at Daenner Kaserne Oct . 9.
Rivera assumed responsibility from Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch, who served as the garrison’s top enlisted leader and adviser since Oct. 2023. Wrensch retires after 22 years in the U.S. Army following this assignment.
Col. Jeffery Higgins, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, passed the unit’s colors from Wrensch to Rivera during the ceremony, symbolizing the transfer of responsibility from one senior enlisted leader to the other.
Higgins said that while civilians make up the primary workforce at USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, the Noncommissioned Officer Corps provides the discipline, wisdom and care needed for that workforce to thrive.
“The NCO Corps is the backbone of our Army, a combat multiplier that ensures readiness, bridges command and execution, and leads with compassion and resolve,” Higgins said. “Command Sergeant Major Raymond Wrensch has been that backbone for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, and I am con-

fident that CSM Rivera will lead with the same integrity, compassion and excellence. Your leadership will be a tremendous asset to our mission, and I look forward to soldiering alongside you to continue serve this incredible community.”
As the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Command Sgt. Maj., Rivera supports the garrison commander in
the day-to-day operations of the garrison, offering advice, sharing the enlisted perspective and connecting garrison leadership to senior enlisted leaders at more than 20 tenant units across 26 sites in Southwest Germany.
“I’m honored to serve as the Command Sergeant Major for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz,” Rivera said. “This role represents

Rivera said he’s looking forward to supporting the commander’s vision and upholding the highest standards of professionalism at the garrison.
“We’re going to make sure our garrison remains a place where people feel valued, supported and empowered to thrive,” he said.
Rivera previously served as the Senior Enlisted Artillery Trainer for Joint Multinational Readiness Center, Command Sergeant Major for 3rd Battalion 6th Field Army and Fire Support Element Sergeant Major for the 2nd Infantry Combined Division, Camp Humphreys, Korea.
a profound responsibility to our Soldiers, Families, and civilians, and I’m sincerely excited for the opportunity to contribute to the strength and readiness of this community.”

From uprooting lives and moving across the globe to spouses’ recurring job hunts, the military lifestyle can be difficult to adjust to at times. Reintegration, however, helps build more adaptable communities.
To help alleviate these life stressors, the 86th Airlift Wing has organizations and contacts to support Airmen and their families here.
First Sergeants play a vital role in assisting service members with any challenges they face.
“Being in the military we’re called to do a lot more than the average person,” said Master Sgt. Suzanne Attridge, 86th Comptroller Squadron and Wing Staff Agencies first sergeant. “It’s a big burden to carry. It comes with its own stressors.”
Most understand the importance of taking care of physical health, but often overlooked is the importance of taking care of mental health as well.
“We serve 24/7,” Attridge said. “Taking care of yourself and noticing other people’s wellness is key to being ready to fight. A lot of times we can be closed off with our feelings. It is absolutely necessary to create a culture of connectedness, and it starts with all of us.”
Attridge reflected on her personal experiences to help explain why reaching out for support is crucial.
“When I first enlisted 18 years ago, there was a lot of fear mongering around the idea that seeking help would have a huge detriment on your career,” she said. “But as a living breathing example, I know that to be false. As I have grown in my Air Force career and become a leader, I want to break that stigma, and part of that is being honest

about my journey and giving people space to have theirs.”
This support system branches from first sergeants to commanders, supervisors, and peers; a collective effort in exuding ‘Wingmanship’ throughout the chain of command.
Attridge believes the need for sup-

port services to extend beyond Airmen, encompassing their dependents as well, is critical.
“Being a first sergeant extends to more than just the welfare of our Airmen,” Attridge said. “Their families serve too.”
Because dependents serve as well, the Military and Family Readiness Center has many resources and programs available for family members to better serve the community.
“We have courses for newlyexpecting parents, financial touchpoints, employment assistance programs and relocation assistance programs,” said Alicia McClelland, 86th Force Support Squadron M&FRC civilian consultant.
McClelland emphasized the importance of taking advantage of its many programs and classes.
“Many people wish they came in sooner,” McClelland explained. “I encourage anyone who hears that
statement to try a new program, try a class, meet with a financial counselor, just to challenge themselves in a good way because it’s something that you will carry for the rest of your life.”
The M&FRC is constantly building upon existing programs to stay current with the needs of service members and their families.

“Spouses are the heartbeat of what keeps the mission running,” McClelland said. “In order to keep the heartbeat running, we have to provide the quality behind that. Allowing spouses to not only learn about U.S. Air Force culture, but to be immersed in it via employment or volunteering.”
As the military lifestyle continues to build resilient Airmen and family members, the resources listed should continue to be utilized to encourage connection and a flourishing community.

“Serving Soldiers and their families is the greatest calling an American can have,” said Herb Gately. The program analyst in the Contract Management Support Office at the 405th Army Field Support Brigade and Soldier for Life was recently honored during a farewell event in Kaiserslautern Nov. 17.
A lifelong member of the Army team who signed his name on the dotted line in the mid ‘80s as a high school dropout, Gately is leaving the 405th AFSB after nearly three years and returning home to Texas with his wife of 30 years to where their two children and six grandchildren reside.
“As a high school dropout, the Army provided me a certain level of discipline that I really needed, and it changed my life. I retired with a master’s degree in program management and as a U.S. Army chief warrant officer 2, promotable,” said Gately, who served for nearly 21 years in uniform, 5 years as a contractor in direct support of Soldiers, and now 15 years as an Army civilian employee.
Gately will be returning to Fort Hood and the 407th Army Field Support Brigade to continue serving as a valued member of the Army team. While at the 405th AFSB, he took to task multiple roles and responsibilities.
Besides serving in the Support Operations Directorate at the brigade headquarters managing multimillion-dollar Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 contracts, he also served as the site director at the Coleman APS-2 worksite in Mannheim, and before that as the chief of quality assurance, there.

“A great team can make even the hardest situation easier, and that’s how I felt as their director,” Gately said. “My team made a significant impact on world events occurring all around us at that time, directly supporting units deploying to Europe from the United States and supporting real-world operations in Europe. Being the director at Coleman at that time was fantastic because I had a fantastic team.”
“And the people at the brigade headquarters are equally amazing. I have a lot of respect for the brigade leadership. I want to thank them for the opportunities and the trust they afforded me,” said Gately.
For his exceptional service, technical knowledge and dedicated leadership supporting the 405th AFSB as a program analyst since August of 2024 and for the multiple leadership positions he held at

Dwohn Luckey went from taking care of Soldiers and their families in uniform to taking care of Soldiers and their families in civilian clothes. The retired senior noncommissioned officer with 26 years of active-duty Army service now works as an Army civilian with the European Travel Branch of Base Support Operations Transportation, 405th Army Field Support Brigade.
His last job in uniform was detachment sergeant, 627th Movement Control Team, 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, in Kaiserslautern. After a short stint as a non-appropriated funds employee at the Child Development Center here, he accepted a job offer at BASOPS Transportation as an Army civilian.
The Centrally Billed Account operations manager at BASOPS Transportation serves as the lead transportation specialist and senior functional advisor for the European passenger movement and management program. This encompasses policies, procedures and overall management of the movement of U.S. European Command service members and civilian passengers internationally and intra-
theater on permanent change of station, expiration of term of service, temporary duty, chapter discharge, emergency leave, deployment, exercises and leisure travel activities.
Servicing thousands of customers across Europe annually in countries like Germany, Poland, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands and more, the 50-year-old father of two who also has a 2-year-old granddaughter and is happily married for 30 years said his connection to the Army goes back to when he was an Army brat. Luckey said his father is also a retired Soldier for life.
Luckey was recently recognized by his leadership and his team for his quality work and dedication to the mission supporting Soldiers and Army families. In fact, he was selected as the Army civilian BASOPS Transportation employee of the quarter for 4th Quarter, Fiscal Year 2025. His acting BASOPS Transportation director, Reginald King, had nothing but praise for Luckey and his work.
“Congratulations on being selected as BASOPS Transportation employee of quarter. Your selection is a direct representation of your hard work and dedication, and I am very proud of you,” King said.
“It feels good, not only for me but for my entire team,” said Luckey. “Since I got to the

European Travel Branch section, I’ve always had nothing but great teammates who I work with, and it’s really a great, cohesive unit. It barely feels like work coming into the office each day and working with my teammates from the European Travel Branch. It’s always so enjoyable.”
Luckey said being selected as the BASOPS Transportation Army civilian employee of the quarter was a surprising gesture but welcome, appreciated and a huge honor for him and his family.

The winter season is here, and safety remains the highest of priorities for the 405th Army Field Support Brigade. In an effort to put ‘the freeze’ on cold weather and winter hazards, the 405th AFSB recently conducted winter safety training, which included tips and proven approaches to stay safe.
Army Sgt. Margarita Ferreira, the brigade training and exercises noncommissioned officer, was the primary instructor for the winter safety training Nov. 12, which was
conducted remotely using a multimedia presentation and real-world winter safety scenarios.
Ferreira, who is also the brigade maintenance NCO, guided several dozen participants through the training, often calling on individuals to share their own personal experiences to best contribute to and further the discussion. Ferreira said she was pleased with the overall involvement and confident her established training objectives were met.
The 405th AFSB safety office has also been heavily involved in providing information to the brigade on winter safety. Brigade safety specialist LaShaun Chappell distrib-

uted an 11-page winter safety newsletter recently that covered multiple important topics, many of which were reiterated by Ferreira during her training.
One of the primary areas referenced in the safety newsletter and also covered in-depth during the training was operating a motor vehicle when road conditions are worsened by the presence of ice and snow. Areas of discussion included tire requirements and specifications, using snow tires versus all season tires, safe braking distances and safe following distances, automobile safety kits during the winter, snow chains, and more.
Addressed in the winter safety newsletter and discussed during the training, for example, was all season tires. As of October 2024, all season tires bearing only the M+S symbol are no longer allowed during winter conditions in Germany. All season tires must now have the Alpine symbol on the tires, indicated by three mountain peaks and a snowflake in the center.
Another discussion point regarding tires was tread depth. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, but 4 mm is strongly recommended for effective winter performance.
Expect heavy fines and points on driving records if caught driving with inappropriate tires during winter conditions, according to the safety newsletter.
Winter outdoor recreation was also covered in the newsletter. Chappell, who is an avid hiker, said winter activities such as hiking, skiing and snowboarding are inherently dangerous if precautions are not taken and proper equipment is not worn.
Another major factor during
the winter and a potential killer is hypothermia, said Chappell. Warning signs of hypothermia include uncontrolled shivering, exhaustion, confusion, drowsiness and difficulty speaking or moving. Physical signs can include pale or bluish skin, fumbling hands, and a general loss of coordination.
“Understanding the various stages of hypothermia and associated symptoms is extremely important,” she said. “If you suspect hypothermia, provide warmth and seek immediate emergency medical help.”
Another danger associated with extreme winter conditions that’s also measured in stages is frostbite.
Stages include normal, frostnip, superficial frostbite and deep frostbite. The symptoms of frostbite are 1) cold skin and a prickling feeling, 2) numbness, 3) red, white, bluishwhite or grayish-yellow skin, 4) hard or waxy skin, 5) clumsiness due to joint and muscle stiffness, and 6) blistering or black and hard areas of skin in severe cases.

GERMAN-AMERICAN CHRISTMAS CONCERT CANCELLATION
PLEASE NOTE: The German-American Christmas concert at Congress Center Ramstein on Dec. 7 has been cancelled.
by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
As days get shorter and cooler, typical winter delicacies, sweets and bright festive lights can brighten up our spirits and let us swing into the holiday season. Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Stollen (Christmas cake) and Glühwein (mulled wine) can be found at each and every Christmas Market around Germany and parts of Europe.
Christmas markets began as medieval December fairs and seasonal “December markets” in German-speaking Europe, evolving into the Advent-focused Weihnachtsmärkte known today. The first noted market took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1296, Dresden’s Striezelmarkt was first recorded in 1434 and the Christkindlesmarkt in Nürnberg was documented in the 17th century.
During the Medieval period winter fairs provided food and necessities and allowed craftsmen and confectioners to sell seasonal goods. In the 14th and 15th centuries Saint Nicholas or December markets became popular to brighten up dreary and cold days leading up to Christmas.
Later Protestant reforms helped popularize the “Christkindelmarkt” (Christ child) name and began shaping some traditions now associated with Advent or Weihnachtsmärkte. During the industrial revolution and urbanization, rising consumer culture reshaped markets into larger commercial events and have continued to adapt through social change.
Open-air wooden stalls sell handcrafted gifts, ornaments, toys, seasonal decorations and candles. Food stalls will let your mouth water with Rostbratwurst, Lebkuchen, Christstollen, roasted nuts, waffles and candied apples, and, of course, spicy and hot Glühwein.
Christstollen
Christstollen (also Weihnachtsstollen or simply Stollen) is a traditional German Christmas fruit bread: a yeast-leavened, cake-like loaf made with candied or dried fruit, nuts, spices and usually coated with powdered sugar or rolled in butter and sugar.

and water baked as fasting food during Advent. The Butter Letter: Because butter and milk were originally forbidden during Advent fasting, Saxon bakers petitioned the papacy; after a long process a papal dispensation (the so-called Butter Letter) allowed richer ingredients in return for a payment, leading to the more flavorful Stollen we know today.
Dresdner Christstollen
Dresden Stollen (Dresdner Christstollen) is the most famous regional variety and its Strietzelmarkt sold it from at least the 15th century. It has a long, documented history in the city and is produced under a distinctive quality tradition—historical records mention Stollen deliveries to rulers and spectacular giant Stollen events that shaped the festival culture around it and is protected by a specific seal.
Lebkuchen
of flour, yeast
Lebkuchen is a traditional German spiced honey cake or cookie closely related to gingerbread, commonly made with honey, mixed spices, nuts, candied peel and sometimes covered with sugar glaze or chocolate. Lebkuchen originated in medieval Franconian monasteries and towns in the 13th century and became an established specialty in cities with access to spices and honey; bakers were recorded in Ulm in 1296 and in Nuremberg by 1395, where the product later became especially famous and regulated by guilds. Spiced honey cakes carried medicinal and symbolic meaning in the Middle Ages and were sold at winter fairs and Christmas markets, helping them become a core part of German Christmas traditions. However, Lebkuchen are not just Lebkuchen, they can be differentiated
between Elisenlebkuchen that are very soft, nearly cake-like, have a high nut content, and little or no flour, often top-glazed and always with oblates on the bottom. Nürnberger Lebkuchen are soft, come in varied sizes (often small rounds) and are based on a traditional recipe from Nürnberg, sometimes glazed or chocolate-coated. Pfeffernüsse (pepper nuts) are small, dense balls with strong spice and often rolled in powdered sugar, while Aachener Printen are firmer, molded and are a regional variant from the city of Aachen, sometimes with syrup added for chewiness. German supermarkets also sell a variety of nontraditional ones in different shapes and sizes, such as stars, hearts and tiny gingerbread men along with traditional Marzipan from Lübeck, another popular treat. A fun fact: Lebkuchen are usually baked in the summer ready to be delivered to the shops by September or October!
Glühwein
Glühwein, literally “glow wine” is usually prepared from red wine, heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star aniseed, orange, sugar and at times vanilla pods. A variation called “Jagertee” (hunter’s tea) can mainly be found in Bavaria and consists of black tea, spices and a shot of rum. Many vendors also sell Kinderpunsch or hot chocolate for children or those who prefer a nonalcoholic delight. So-called “Glühbier” has also become popular in recent years.
Weihnachtsmarkt
There are well over 2,500 Christmas markets throughout Germany, while some smaller ones in towns or villages may not even be counted. Each larger city has at least one
market and some very large cities such as Berlin, Cologne, Munich and Hamburg may have up to five or six individual markets in separate city sections.
A few Christmas Markets within an hour’s driving distance from the Kaiserslautern Military Community include: Saarbrücken, where a Santa Claus “glides” over St. Johanner Markt once an hour. Trier has been voted as the most romantic market for several years. Mannheim has booths around the water tower and the market in Neustadt offers an especially nostalgic setting at the

market square. An underground market in a wine cellar in Trabentrarbach is also worth a spectacular visit. A smaller market, that only opens on weekends, is in Bad Münster am Stein, but offers a grandiose, medieval setting with Ebernburg Castle as a backdrop. Dresden’s Striezelmarkt is the oldest in Germany and Nürnberg is known for its iconic red-white stalls and Zwetschgen Männla (small figures made out of plums) in front of the cathedral. Rothenburg ob der Tauber has a fairy-tale medieval setting and in Stuttgart booths compete with special prize-winning decorations on their roof tops. See Unterwegs for a full list of markets. Whether near or far, the nostalgic markets will surely tune you into the holiday season!
Story by Airman Paden Henry 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
For most people on Ramstein, they only ever hear the rumble of an aircraft when it heads down the runway, ready for another mission. For the 86th Maintenance Squadron, their mission begins long before that, inside the hangar.
Ramstein Air Base is the Global Gateway across multiple commands which means for the MXS that doing backshop-level repairs, from letter checks on C-130J Super Hercules to overall preventative maintenance, is how they are the epitome of support, propelling the U.S. Air Force’s mission forward.
For Senior Airman Heather Cummings, an 86th MXS aerospace inspection journeyman, being a maintainer was her number one job that she wanted in the Air Force. Since she was a young girl she had been side-by-side with her father who was a mechanic.
“I grew up holding the flashlight, grabbing the wrench and helping him out,” she said. “So when I got older and I was considering the military, I only wanted to do mechanics.”
Cummings has a deep understanding of how important maintenance is, and the level of work that goes into her craft.
“Maintenance is one of the most handson jobs that the Air Force has,” Cummings said. “Without maintenance, it would all crumble, because we’re the backbone of support of what the Air Force’s mission is.”
The MXS provides routine maintenance inspections that they call a letter check system. The letter check can take an average of one to two months to complete, going from A to D. ‘A’ is an overall visual inspection to identify anything that needs to be repaired. Then going onto ‘B’, a mid-range check, which includes removing electrical connections from an engine to clean them, to changing out filters and an overall inspection and cleaning parts from the aircraft.
Then onto ‘C’ and ‘D’ checks that go the most in-depth check by taking off the nose cone of a propeller, inspecting the inside wiring of the aircraft, and ensuring preventative maintenance, comparable to scheduling an oil change for a car.
“You have to look very closely at every single piece of ceiling, every single screw, make sure nothing’s out of place,” said Airman 1st Class John Noble, 86th MXS aircraft inspections journeyman.
Noble always had a deep love and passion for airplanes, so for him to not only work on them everyday but work alongside Airmen that are similar to him, makes coming into work worth it.
“This was the only job I ever wanted,” Noble said. “Being able to work on an airplane every day, especially military airplanes, is super cool.”
There are two types of squadrons responsible for aircraft maintenance, the 86th Maintenance Squadron and the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. While they may have similar names, the way they achieve their mission looks different.
“You can compare the 86th AMXS versus the 86th MXS to that of a NASCAR pit crew,” said Master Sgt. Douglas Johnson, 86th MXS assistant flight chief.
The 86th AMXS is akin to the pit crew of aircraft. The car comes to the pit and immediately people swarm the car. They’re changing the tires, refueling the gas in a quick flash, and then that car is back on the track. That’s the mission of AMXS but with aircraft.
In contrast, the MXS takes that same race car into the back-shop and gives it a thorough check-up. It’s not about getting the plane airborne right that instant, but ensuring the aircraft is mission capable for years and not just mission ready that day. They slow down, pop the hood open and meticulously inspect every component to make sure it’s operating at peak performance. They work on electrical systems,

hydraulics, avionics, all to a degree. There are specialities specific for those systems that do much more detail.
Johnson has been a crew chief for the entirety of his 22-year career in the Air Force and has worked on numerous airframes in multiple shops. Maintenance is a unique community that he holds dear to his heart.
“I love being a maintainer,” Johnson said.
“Putting the aircraft in the air and saying, ‘I remember fixing that aircraft and we made that happen.’”
The Airmen of the 86th MXS are passionate about being maintainers in the Air Force, even with its high tempo and intensity, they balance their workload to ensure that the aircraft passes inspections to get back on the flightline.

December is Seasonal Affective Disorder Awareness Month, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center remains an advocate for raising awareness.
Walter Reed’s clinical psychologist, Dr. Kalim A. Alcover-Pabon, reiterates the resources available to beneficiaries, adding how companionship plays a part in coping with SAD.
SAD, often referred to as seasonal depression, is a recurrent seasonal pattern that usually emerges once winter commences. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, those affected by SAD may start overeating, oversleeping, and socially withdrawing, like animals hibernating. These symptoms can persist for about four to five months per year.
“The most important thing for people is understanding they need to get out. Get involved in social activities, self-care activities, time out in the sun (even when it is cold),” Dr. Alcover-Pabon shared. “Part of the problem during this time is the lack of exposure due to shorter days and the isolation due to cold temperatures.”
In tandem with Dr. AlcoverPabon’s advice, Walter Reed and its external counterparts offer services and resources to enable beneficiaries to cope better. One example is the Walter Reed Adult Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic, where
active duty service members can reach out.
Service members and their families can also contact Military OneSource and Military and Family Life Counseling for assistance.
Alcover-Pabon also encourages anyone who thinks they may suffer from SAD to “reach out to a Walter Reed health care provider.”
On top of the center’s efforts to combat SAD through services and resources, during an interview, Alcover-Pabon agreed that “morale visits bring a unique sense of companionship needed during what could be challenging times for some.”
A highlight of recent visits includes appearances by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and team members from both the Washington Capitals and the Washington Commanders, all contributing to uplifting the spirits of wounded warriors, patients, and staff at Walter Reed.
“Morale visits are a vital tool in combating SAD, offering much-needed moments of empathy, understanding, and support,” shared Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jessica Hann, Department Chief for the Warrior and Family Coordination Cell. “These few and brief visits contribute significantly to a supportive and resilient environment, boosting morale when it’s most needed.” Hann also added she’s privileged to witness the profound impact these visits have, and that each visit serves a unique opportunity to
uplift spirits and make connections during challenging times.
“It’s an honor to serve those who have given so much and to be a part of their journey toward healing,” continued Hann. “My goal is to lead initiatives that foster community and resilience for our hospital, Wounded Warriors, their families, and service members.”
For the Walter Reed team, morale-boosting and well-wish visits are pieces to the giant puzzle supporting and aiding those dealing with SAD, reminding them that help is always available.
If you or someone you know is in immediate distress or is thinking about hurting themselves, call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7 at 988 for free and confidential support.

Staff Sgt. Christian Silvera 406th Air Expeditionary Wing
CAMP LEMONNIER, DJIBOUTI — Intelligence operations are critical to the success of every flying mission executed by the 75th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron.
One Airman is ensuring aircrews remain informed and protected while operating in uncertain and hostile environments across the area of responsibility.
“Intel is critical to the execution of every flying mission we do here at the 75th,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Thomas Norton, 75th EAS senior intelligence officer. “We ensure the safety of our aircrews by delivering timely and accurate tactical-level threat data and assessments, as well as operational and strategic analysis to the command team to enhance situational awareness and decisionmaking.”
For Norton, this deployment represents a milestone: this is his first as an officer and section officer in charge.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding to lead my team and watch my analyst excel and grow while getting the mission done,” Norton said.
“Seeing Airmen succeed and develop is the most fulfilling part of this job.”
“One of my team members is on her first deployment, and it has been absolutely awesome helping foster her growth as an analyst and watching her develop,” said Norton. “It has also been very rewarding getting to recognize her as a key contributor to our Team of the Month award and as the Airman of the Quarter at our home-station Wing.”
Beyond supporting aircrews, the intelligence section has expanded its impact by hosting informational briefings for maintainers and support personnel. These sessions provide greater context into regional operations and demonstrate how their work enables mission success on a larger scale.
“We’ve been able to give people more insight into what’s happening in the AOR,” Norton said. “It helps them see how their daily tasks directly contribute to the mission. It connects everyone to the bigger picture.”
As the deployment continues, Norton and the 75th EAS intelligence team remain focused on empowering aircrews, strengthening situational awareness, and ensuring every mission launches with precision and confidence.

by German-American Community Office
Rules in Germany for keeping up your property or rental during winter may greatly differ from those in the United States. The German-American Community Office has put together a few guidelines for your safety and those of others.
According to Article 17, paragraph 3, line 5 of German rules applying to public order, keeping up roads and sidewalks is delegated to the owners and/or occupants of developed or undeveloped premises, accessible to pedestrians on a public public road or adjacent to one.
Duties in winter include the removal of snow from the roads, sidewalks and crosswalks and very icy roads with sand or light gravel. In terms of proper timing, this means that winter responsibilities need to be carried out prior to heavy pedestrian or road traffic. Salt is only allowed under extremely icy conditions.
This means that sanding has to be done in such a timely manner that roads and sidewalks are secure prior to traffic, but not later than 7 a.m. on weekdays. Under certain circumstances, however, clearing may be required to start even earlier.
On Sundays and holidays, heavy traffic is considered to start around 9 a.m.

Winter duties must be carried out regularly at an earlier time to ensure required safety. In the evening this responsibility ends after the heavy traffic period, as a rule of thumb around 8 p.m.
Anyone failing to carry out their responsibilities, may be legally enforced to perform required snow removal or sanding. Also, bear in mind that if a person slips and is injured due to negligence of removing snow and ice, you can be held liable.

palace gardens that rival royal estates, half-timbered districts brimming with history, inventive museums that interest even non-museum-goers, and surfing (really!). Whether you’re craving a relaxed urban getaway or a deeper look at a city that quietly punches above its weight, Hannover delivers.
Must-sees in Hannover
The New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus)
Part fairy-tale palace, part city hall, the opulent Neues Rathaus is one of Hannover’s most iconic landmarks. Don’t miss the unique curved elevator to the dome viewpoint, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the city’s rooftops and parks. Inside, a series of large city models show Hannover’s evolution—from medieval times to post-war reconstruction— making it one of the most compelling quick history lessons you’ll find in any German city.
Marktplatz & Old Town
Hannover’s Altstadt isn’t large, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. Start at the Marktkirche with its massive brickwork and climb toward the Old Town Hall, one of the city’s most photogenic buildings. The surrounding lanes are dotted with cafés, boutiques, and restored halftimbered houses that survived Hannover’s wartime destruction.
Herrenhäuser Gärten
The crown jewel of Hannover, the baroque Herrenhausen Gardens are among the most impressive formal gardens in Europe. Spend a morning wandering the Great Garden’s geometric designs, ornate
fountains, sparkling grotto, and manicured hedges. The neighboring Berggarten also offers a peaceful experience, with exotic greenhouses and tranquil paths.
Maschsee
No Hannover weekend is complete without a lap around Maschsee, the city’s vast man-made lake. Locals flock here yearround for jogging, cycling, paddle-boating, or simply sitting on a bench sipping an Eiskaffee. In summer, outdoor bars and pop-up lounges give the shoreline a Mediterranean feel. Even on quiet winter days, the lake remains a scenic escape right in the city center.
Off the beaten path: Experiences most visitors miss
Linden: Hannover’s Creative Quarter
Cross the Ihme River into Linden, and the atmosphere shifts immediately. This is where students, artists, and young families mingle in colorful streets lined with independent cafés, vintage shops, and relaxed bars. Stop for brunch at a neighborhood café, wander along Limmerstraße with its casual vibe, or explore the small but meaningful street-art pockets scattered throughout the district. Linden captures the everyday Hannover that residents love but tourists often overlook.
Eilenriede Forest
Known as “Europe’s Green Lung,” the Eilenriede is a vast urban forest (larger than New York’s Central Park, in fact) where you can lose yourself in greenery just steps from the city center. With winding trails for cycling and walking, shady picnic spots, and quiet corners that feel miles
away from city life, it’s easily one of the most relaxing places in Hannover. If you’re visiting in autumn, the forest sparkles with golden hues that make it a dream for photographers and outdoor lovers.
Sprengel Museum
The Sprengel Museum remains a hidden gem for modern art fans. Its collection of 20th-century works – from German expressionism to bold contemporary pieces – is both thoughtful and accessible. Even if you’re not normally an art-museum person, the Sprengel’s clean architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and well-curated exhibits offer a refreshing cultural detour.
Surfing in Hannover: The Leinewelle
Yes, you can actually surf in Hannover. The Leinewelle, an engineered river wave near the city center, has quickly become one of Hannover’s most unexpected and energetic attractions.
Open to surfers of varying skill levels, it offers a unique opportunity to practice surfing without heading to the coast. Spectators gather along the river banks to watch locals carve, balance, and occasionally wipe out on the standing wave. Even if you’ve never stepped on a board, the atmosphere is electric – part sports hub, part urban hangout – and it gives the city an adventurous edge many visitors don’t expect.
A Unique Destination: The Welfengarten & Welfenschloss
Just north of the city center lies a place that even many Hannover residents forget to mention: the Welfengarten and the striking Welfenschloss. Today, the palace serves as part of the University of Hannover, but
its regal façade and wide lawns still hint at its aristocratic origins. The surrounding park is a beautifully designed green space featuring grand trees, open meadows, and quiet walking paths.
What makes it special is the atmosphere – peaceful, elegant, and refreshingly untouristed. Visitors can sit on the grass and admire the palace architecture, read a book beneath centuries-old trees, or simply wander the grounds imagining the lives of the Welf dynasty who once shaped much of the region’s history. It’s both a historical curiosity and a serene retreat, and it feels worlds away from the bustle of the city center despite being just a short walk from it.
Hannover’s Christmas markets transform the city into a warm, golden maze of lights each winter. The main market around the Marktkirche, which runs from 24 November to 22 December 2025, daily from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. offers classic wooden stalls, mulled wine, and traditional crafts. The Finnish Christmas Village in the Old Town brings smoked salmon, tar liqueur, and a cozy Arctic vibe. For something more whimsical, the Historical Christmas Village features medieval-style booths and costumed vendors. Together, these markets create a festive, family-friendly atmosphere that feels both intimate and immersive – perfect for an evening stroll with a Glühwein in hand.
By car, Hannover is 4.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 5.5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
