Chief Master Sgt. David Wolfe named 21st Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force

Chief Master Sgt. David R. Wolfe was selected as the 21st Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force on Nov. 6. His valuable experience and proven performance make him a key addition to Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach’s leadership team.

“Chief Wolfe has been my wingman, advisor and confidant for

multiple command assignments,” said Wilsbach. “Cindy and I are delighted to have Dave and Doniel alongside us as we lead the Air Force. Their passion for Airmen and their families is second to none.”

Wolfe’s most recent assignment before this new position was Command Chief Master Sergeant, Air Combat Command, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. There, he served as the principal advisor to Wilsbach and ACC staff on issues

impacting the well-being, morale, and optimal employment of all personnel.

Chief Wolfe’s career began in February 1992, encompassing a diverse range of specialties. His experience spans missile security, elite guard duty, protective services, and space warning security, demonstrating his commitment to national security. He possesses expertise in training and standardization evaluation, security forces

operations, logistics, and professional military education, ensuring a well-rounded skill set.

“The selection of Chief Wolfe as our 21st Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force is the right decision during this critical time for the Air Force,” said Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink. “I know that he will continue to serve and advocate for Airmen and their families.”

As with previous CMSAFs, Wolfe will serve as the public voice for

Air Force personnel to all levels of government. He will also act as an advisor to Wilsbach and other senior military and civilian leaders, providing counsel on issues concerning the welfare, readiness, morale, utilization, and professional development of the Air Force’s Airmen.

As a leader, Wolfe will set the course for the Total Force and serve as a dedicated advocate for all Airmen.

Allied Air Forces converge in Italy for Exercise Falcon Strike 2025

From Nov. 3-4, NATO Allies were taken to the skies over Italy for Exercise Falcon Strike 2025, hosted by the Italian Air Force and designed to advance multinational air combat readiness across fourth and fifth-generation aircraft.

Centred at the 32nd Wing in Amendola — one of Italy’s key F-35 operating bases — the exer-

cise brings together more than 1,000 personnel and over 50 aircraft from Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Greece. Additional Italian Air Force bases are supporting the event, enabling large-scale, joint operations that integrate air, land and maritime components for a comprehensive multi-domain training environment.

While led by Italy, Falcon Strike 2025 directly contributes to NATO Allied Air Command’s objectives of

Deterrence and Defence, enhancing interoperability and standardisation across Allied fleets. Positioned in the Mediterranean, Italy provides a vital operational hub for the Alliance, and exercises of this scale strengthen the readiness and agility of NATO air forces under the collective defence framework.

The training focuses on integrating fourth and fifth-generation aircraft into cohesive formations, which is an essential step in refining tactics for modern air warfare. Participating forces will also train in Agile Combat

Employment, testing NATO’s ability to deploy rapidly and operate from dispersed locations while maintaining combat effectiveness.

A key element of Falcon Strike 2025 is the integration of Live, Virtual and Constructive environments at Sardinia’s Salto di Quirra Joint Training Range. This allows aircrews to engage in realistic, data-linked simulations that mirror complex threat scenarios, ensuring the training reflects the principle: “Train as we fight, fight as we train.”

Described by the Italian Air Force as a “leap into the future,”

Falcon Strike 2025 underscores NATO’s defensive strength and unity. By enhancing interoperability and advancing fifth-generation integration, the exercise reaffirms the Alliance’s commitment to peace, stability, and collective defence across the Euro-Atlantic area.

In the cockpit: Docuseries captures intensities of elite fighter pilot training

While movies like “Top Gun” and “Top Gun: Maverick” show people a glamorized version of military fighter pilot life, most people really have no idea what it takes to become an elite aviator, until now.

A new National Geographic docuseries called “Top Guns: The Next Generation,” follows a handful of Navy and Marine Corps officers as they go through advanced strike fighter training — the last, hardest and most unforgiving phase of fighter pilot qualification training.

The show’s producers chose to film that phase because of its intensity, but it’s also what audiences are most familiar with. The show skips past the classroom training and highlights when students go beyond being “just a pilot” to what it takes to become a fighter pilot.

“It’s the most crucial point of their training. It’s really the point in which they can fail, and their dreams of becoming a fighter pilot are over,” said Karen Edwards, the series’ showrunner. “They spent years getting to this point, and now it’s all on the line.”

When choosing candidates for the show, Edwards said they met with about 30 trainees assigned to Training Wing One, based at Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi, where most of the series was shot for more than a year. They selected a variety of students with different backgrounds, experience levels and skills.

“One of the participants used to be a yoga teacher and is now a Marine,” Edwards said. “Another guy talked about how he was adopted at birth and how that has impacted him and his religion. For others, it’s in the family blood.”

Marine Corps Capt. Micah Nissly was the adoptee Edwards mentioned. He said his dad, a pastor, impressed upon him the importance of public service and giving back, so he enlisted in the Marines. After eight years of service, he went to officer candidate school before starting aviation training.

“I think it’s important for individuals to know that, regardless of their upbringing and how they came into this, they have this opportunity,” Nissly said. “Naval flight training is truly the great equalizer: you give it all. You make it or you don’t. And I think your background matters so little … what matters is your performance.”

Initial Reluctance

When the documentary opportunity arose, Nissly said he initially

denied the offer to preserve the legacy of the “quiet professional,” as he knew most in the jet community to be. But then his wife convinced him that it’s something his 6-yearold daughter could one day look back on with pride.

“I really hope the viewers… see that behind every flight is a naval aviator committed to teamwork, integrity and self-improvement. They’ll see our ups and downs, but humility and accountability define us way more than the egos,” Nissly said.

Marine Corps Capt. Stephanie Harris was also reluctant to be part of the production because she didn’t want it to take away from her focus on training. But she eventually agreed.

“I’ve looked up to so many people who walked this path before me,” she said. “Providing an example of the kind of people that do this — and not just your stereotypical version — felt important to me.”

Stunning Cinematography With a Focus on Accuracy

Some of the series’ filming also took place at Naval Air Facility El Centro in the California desert. El Centro specializes in teaching trainees strike training — how to accurately drop bombs and other ordnance. A small portion of filming also took place at Naval Air Station Key West, so the students could access the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. These locations helped crews capture stunning aerial visuals that included precision bombing drills, dogfighting, evasive maneuvers and carrier landings.

“[Students learn this] in a really short period of time, and it’s a lot to ask, which makes it all the more amazing when they achieve it,” Edwards said.

To get the shots, the production team put cameras inside T-45 Goshawk training aircraft using in-cockpit mounts designed, fabricated and installed by Naval Air Systems Command and the Naval Air Warfare Development Center. When the students are flying, the audience can hear minute by minute what they’re saying.

“Everything that happens inside the jet is caught in real time,” Edwards said. “You hear them being taught — what they get right, what they get wrong, how they can improve.”

To ensure safety wasn’t compromised, the production team had instructors and professionals fly the aircraft for the external cockpitto-cockpit scenes, recreating the flights the students had taken.

“We filmed them externally using the same film crew as they used for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ … because that is so dangerous,” Edwards said.

Nissly said he thinks the series did a great job of focusing on authenticity.

“They did an amazing job filming the honest struggles. There’s no do-overs for this,” he said. “This is real life, and the stakes were as high for us then. What you see is what you get.”

“It’s inspiring to hear and see up close the authentic stories of those serving in our Navy today,” said Navy Rear Adm. Ryan M. Perry,

“[Strike training] is one of the most difficult missions that we do. So that phase, for me, felt the most intense,” she said.

When asked what drives her, Harris said some of it is the fear of letting other people down. “Not being prepared enough when the moment comes,” she said. “Fear that I won’t be ready, and that drives me in tremendous ways.”

The Takeaway

For the Navy and Marine Corps, the goal of capturing the intense demands of this program on film was to highlight what it truly takes to be a naval aviator — even if it shows failure that inevitably happens.

the service’s chief of information. “It’s about young men and women chasing a dream to fly, and the intense training and challenges they go through to achieve their goals.”

Emotions Run High

For many of the participants, the high-stakes, life-or-death training takes an emotional toll, which is also captured on camera.

“All of them come back and share and have moments where it’s like, ‘Am I good enough? Am I going to pass tomorrow? Will I make the grade?’” Edwards said. “That is crucial to their training. They can never become complacent or confident. They’re always being pushed to the next level.”

At one point in the series, Nissly gets sick while practicing dogfighting with a senior officer in the jet with him. The fact that it was an incident beyond his control was something he struggled with.

“Getting through that mental block of, ‘Will this happen again? Is this going to be a common occurrence? How am I going to fight through that?’ It was definitely something I had to get over,” Nissly said, before joking, “Humility also comes in and will always keep me on the straight and narrow.”

Nissly said he’s driven by the desire to support enlisted troops — which he was, once — fighting on future battlefields. Similarly, Harris said the hardest part of her training was the thought of those troops on the ground someday and knowing that she needed to hit her targets for them.

“These are real human beings, real people who are really giving it their all,” said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joseph “Bones” Pfaff, entertainment liaison at Navy Office of Information West, which led the project. Based in Los Angeles, the office works with entertainment industry professionals to ensure an authentic, accurate portrayal of the Navy’s assets, policies and people in television and film.

“We have a very strenuous and challenging pipeline to go from being an unwinged aviation student to actually earning their wings. Not everybody succeeds, and that’s OK,” Pfaff continued.

“It doesn’t end when they finish fighter pilot school,” said Marine Corps Maj. Hector Alejandro, director of the Marine Corps Entertainment Office in Los Angeles. He explained that the trainees who earn their wings continue training at their squadrons in the fleet. “Someday, a 19-year-old Marine is going to be pinned down on a hillside, and he’ll be looking to the sky for help. The person in that cockpit has to be the one who won’t fail him. Our selection and training pipeline is ruthless because we’re building pilots worthy of that trust.”

Series producers said they expect the audience to connect with the dedicated men and women highlighted in the show — and learn that it’s not like what they see in the movies.

“It’s not just about going up and having some fun in the jets on a daily basis. This is a job. They are careful. They’re trained by very, very experienced people,” Edwards said. “You take the audience into a privileged world that they would never, ever be able to see.”

“Top Guns: The Next Generation” airs on Tuesdays on National Geographic and streams the following day on Disney+ and Hulu.

Sound the alarm on holiday safety

The holiday season is a time for bringing joy, connection and plenty of celebration but keeping that spirit alive means thinking ahead. Before diving into the festivities, take a moment to consider safety. Whether cooking, decorating or traveling, a quick look at potential risks can help ensure the holidays stay happy and safe.

The 86th Airlift Wing safety office recommends implementing the Air Force’s five-step risk management process in preparation for the holiday season.

The following safety tips minimize risks by enabling individuals to make informed decisions and take proactive measures to prevent holiday mishaps.

• Identify hazards.

• Assess hazards.

• Develop controls/make decisions.

• Implement controls.

• Supervise/evaluate.

“Structure is smart, whether it’s traveling, decorating or cooking, structured planning is necessary for keeping each other safe,” said Staff Sgt. David Cunningham, 86th Airlift Wing safety office occupational safety technician. “We often overlook hazards related to fatigue, alcohol consumption and weather conditions but those are hazards that can be minimized with proper risk-management.”

A staple this time of the year is a homecooked holiday meal and extravagant decorations, but did you know the holidays are the leading cause of home structure fires per year?

According to the National Fire Prevention

Association, cooking related fires surge on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Days. In 2024 on Thanksgiving Day alone, more than 1,600 home cooking fires were reported, about 400 percent higher than on a typical

day. NFPA safety tips include keeping a closewatch on all cooking and prohibiting children from stove-tops and ovens.

As reported by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, during the 2024 holiday season, 14,900 people were treated at hospital emergency rooms because of holiday decorating mishaps. CPSC advises against stringing together more than three sets of incandescent lights, overloading electrical outlets, as well as making sure live Christmas trees have plenty of water and looking for the “fire resistant” label when purchasing an artificial tree.

When driving long distances, pre-planning rest-stops, driving defensively, monitoring weather and road conditions can mitigate the potential risk of accidents, said Cunningham. He also urges Kaiserslautern Military Community members traveling back stateside to be cautious as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is the busiest time of the year to be on the road.

As the holiday season approaches, taking a few extra moments to plan and practice safety can make all the difference. The 86th AW safety office reminds everyone that safety is a shared responsibility and the foundation for a truly joyful season.

With preparation, awareness, and a commitment to looking out for one another, we can ensure the holidays are filled with happiness and peace of mind.

Sports heroes who served: Baseball Hall of Famer served in World War II

Baseball Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm pitched for 10 Major League Baseball teams from 1952 to 1972 and was on the World Series winning New York Giants team in 1954.

He was born in Huntersville, North Carolina, in 1922 and in 1942, he was signed to play by the Mooresville Moors baseball team of the North Carolina State League.

But his baseball career was put on hold when he entered military service with the Army at Camp Croft, South Carolina, on Nov. 23, 1942.

Wilhelm saw combat in Europe with the 395th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge.

Before being discharged in 1946, Wilhelm attained the rank of staff sergeant. He would go on to have a long baseball career, despite

having to play with shrapnel lodged in his back from being wounded in combat.

Upon returning home from Europe, Wilhelm returned to the Mooresville team as a winning pitcher.

The New York Giants took notice and in 1947 signed him on to their

minor league team, the Knoxville Smokies. He continued to pitch well, and the team called him up to the major league in 1952.

His teammates referred to him as “Old Sarge” because of his Army war record, and this nickname would endure throughout his baseball career.

Wilhelm’s claim to fame as a pitcher was his hard-to-hit knuckleball.

Special Buffet

Longevity is another of his achievements, retiring from baseball in 1972, within 16 days of turning 50. Other career highlights include his pitching a no-hitter against the New York Yankees while playing for the Baltimore Orioles in 1958 and he was an eight-time All-Star during his major league career.

Following his retirement as a major league player, Wilhelm coached minor league teams of the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves

In 1985, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, having played for 10 major league teams:

• York Giants, 1952-1956

• St. Louis Cardinals, 1957

• Cleveland Indians, 1957-1958

• Baltimore Orioles, 1958-1962

• Chicago White Sox, 1963-1968

• California Angels, 1969

• Atlanta Braves, 1969-1970

• Chicago Cubs, 1970

• Atlanta Braves, 1971

• Los Angeles Dodgers, 1971-1972

Following retirement from baseball in the 1990s, Wilhelm and his wife Peggy and their three children, Patti, Pam and Jim, moved to Sarasota, Florida. Wilhelm died of heart failure in a Sarasota nursing home in 2002, at age 80.

How mindful meditation will help you stay healthy in cold

Winter is here! Worried that the cold might get you and your family sick more often?

One thing that definitely makes us sick more often is our body’s response to stress and anxiety. Obviously, having to deal with the holidays can make us stressed out. This stress directly impacts your body and your general health. The better that we are equipped to deal with stress-induced anxiety, the better off our health will be.

One great way to deal with stress is the process of mindful meditation. Mindful meditation, instead of other forms of meditation that focuses your attention outward, commands us to pay attention to the present. It commands us to be aware of what’s going on inside our bodies and our minds. The goal is to simply acknowledge the reality inside ourselves, instead of constantly focusing on how to change our situation.

Once you move from the tendency to want to change things to the point of accepting your true and ultimate reality, you get closer to the goals of mindful meditation. This gives us the opportunity to see and appreciate ourselves for who we really are. Mindfulness simply provides nonjudgmental attention to the details of our experience as it unfolds.

So how do you practice mindful meditation? Here are a few steps to get you started.

1. Pick your location. Scene and setting are very important for getting the appropriate mood for mindful meditation. We recommend finding a quiet room with a candle lit and a cushion to sit on.

2. Sit in a posture that is upright but not rigid. Cross your legs in a comfortable position in front of you.

3. Sit there and pay attention to your breath as it comes in and out of you. Focus on keeping your breathing as steady as possible.

4. Pay attention to your thoughts (and they will come!). Instead of focusing on any particular thought, let the thought enter and leave your consciousness naturally.

5. Finally, remind yourself that you need to be inwardly compassionate. You are trying the best that you can, and being hard on yourself will get you nowhere, and will lead to anxiety.

Start by doing this for fifteen minutes at a time, and then see if you can go longer. After getting some practice, this meditation should help you reduce anxiety and stress in your life, which will also help you feel more healthy.

Two great apps that can help you get into mediation are Headspace and Calm, which offer guided meditations with different topics such as health, gratitude, productivity and more. They both offer free trial periods!

There is a common misconception that meditation is the absence of thoughts when really it is more about the recognition of thoughts and the ability to put them aside for the few moments of calm you’re going for. While it does take practice, there is no such thing as ‘can’t do it’ or a wrong time to start. You’ll find it gets easier with each practice and even on days you have trouble focusing, the mantras that will be read on the apps mentioned above will provide food for thought no matter the mood you’re in. Try it now!

Baffling Berlin

Berlin is not only the capital and largest city in Germany with its 3.7 million inhabitants. It has always been known as the capital of diversity and freedom. In the roaring 1920’s it was famed for creativity, a wild nightlife scene and innovation. Due to the many “speeding” cars (at about 20 km/h) the city installed the first traffic light in Germany in 1924. What an anniversary!

For forty years it was also the only city in the world surrounded by a wall and located in an isolated location amidst a different country. It is a metropolis that sets trends and is full of surprises. We’ve collected a few facts that you may not know:

• Berlin is geographically nine times larger than Paris and feels much less cramped. Berlin has 4,000 inhabitants per square kilometer, while Paris houses 21,000 people in the same space. It is also home to the largest community of Turks outside of Türkiye with 110,000 people.

• The longest open-air gallery in the world. East Side Gallery is 1.3 kilometers long and is part of the former wall. It displays over 100 murals from artists around the world, is located on the banks of the Spree River in Friedrichshain and draws up to two million visitors a year.

• There are more museums than rainy days in Berlin. One-hundred eighty museums outdo the average 106 rainy days of the year. The most visited ones are Hamburger Bahnhof, Sammlung Boros, Gropius-Bau, König Galerie, Berlinische Galerie and Check Point Charlie.

• The public transport system is 4,473 kilometers in total with trains, trams and buses running 24/7. This means, that when running all day, the transport system goes around the earth 8.7 times a day. In comparison, Paris has 215 kilometers of public transport and London 400 kilometers.

• Berlin Zoologischer Garten is the most visited zoo in Europe. It is home to over

20,000 animals and 1,300 different species on an area of 82 acres. It also offers fun activities for young and older visitors and allows some interaction with animals.

• Döner spits galore! It is noted that a Turkish immigrant introduced the first Döner Kebab in Berlin in the late 1980’s. He adapted the style from the typical version in his home country. One spit has about 63 kilograms of meat and 950 spits are sold per day, equaling 60 tons of meat per year!

• There are around 1,700 bridges in Berlin, the most attractive and famous one is the Oberbaumbrücke between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, not far from the East Side Gallery.

• Thus, it has more bridges than Venice. Berlin also has more waterways than Amsterdam, Stockholm and Venice together, so hop on a boat and cruise the city.

• Berlin is one of the greenest cities in Germany. About 50 percent of the city consists of buildings, but roughly one third is green with woods, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes. Tiergarten located near Brandenburger Tor is 280 hectares large, somewhat smaller than

Central Park in New York City.

• Hungry and thirsty at midnight? Then venture to a Späti, (literally a “latey”) a small convenient store where you can buy essentials at any time of day or night just around the corner. There are 1,000 Spätis spread around the city.

• Capital of dog lovers. In Berlin you can take your furry friend (almost) everywhere and there are about 200,000 dogs, while the number of cats, pet rabbits and guinea pigs is unknown. Unfortunately, this also amounts to annually 55 tons of droppings.

• Single capital of the German republic. Up until 2022 Berlin had 49.8 percent of singles or people not married. In 2023 Munich topped this record with 50.2 percent singles, but Berlin still has the overall highest number with 1.8 million individuals.

• Berlin recorded about 12 million visitors in 2023, thereof 1.2 million Americans. Were you one of them? If not, it’s time to hit the road and explore for yourself!

Last, but not least, the Berlin Wall was opened on the evening of Nov. 9, 1989, 36 years ago, another occasion to celebrate!

ABC IN KMC: Fairy Tales

As days are getting shorter, darker and foggier, it is the perfect time of the year to cuddle up on the sofa with a cup of hot chocolate or tea, and a good book! One option might be to indulge in the world of fairy tales and legends and journey back into childhood. Germany and Europe offer a wealth of stories, mainly growing from oral storytellings, pagan myths, medieval romance and even local superstition.

Brothers Grimm

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm of Hanau collected and published “Children and Household Tales” beginning in 1812, transforming oral material into printed tales. Their editions preserved many dark elements early on, later editions softened stories for broader and younger audiences. Their work shaped how German and European folktales were studied and retold worldwide.

Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella

Many of us will recall scenes from Grimms’ more than 200 collected tales, some grounded in history and others later adapted into colorful Disney animated films.

Rumpelstiltskin (Rumpelstilzchen) is about a desperate miller’s daughter who must guess a mysterious imp’s name to save her firstborn from a binding bargain. The clever girl manages to outwit the imp and saves her child.

Cinderella (Aschenputtel) was a persecuted girl who eventually married a prince with the aid of magical helpers and a lost shoe. Snow White (Schneewittchen) had to deal with a jealous and vain stepmother but managed to survive with the help of seven friends and a charming prince. Little Red Riding Hood (Rotkäppchen) almost lost her life when a wolf impersonated her grandmother but eventually managed to take him by surprise and throw him into a well.

In Hansel and Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel), a girl outwits an oven-worshipping witch after being abandoned in a forest and lured by a candy house, thereby saving her brother. Composer Engelbert Humperdinck was so touched by the story that he composed an opera that premiered in December 1893, with the famous aria “Evening prayer.”

In The Bremen Town Musicians (Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten) aging animals abandon useless roles, join forces, and frighten off robbers to claim a new home. Two figures, one in bronze and the other more colorful, are displayed in the city center of Bremen in memory of the clever donkey, dog, cat and rooster.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin (Rattenfänger von Hameln) tells of a flautist who

rids the town of Hameln of a rat infestation after making a bargain for payment. When the town refuses to pay, he returns in revenge and leads 130 children away with his music, who are never seen again. The tale likely echoes historical episodes of mass emigration or disappearance of young people from the region in the 13th century.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair! A group of German students factchecked this story and came to the following conclusion. If Rapunzel never once cut her hair and the tower was 10 meters (32 feet) high, plus assuming that the prince actually managed to climb the tower using her hair as a rope, he would have been in for a big surprise! Rapunzel would have been at least 67 years old!

Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish poet who wrote 156 fairy tales, first published in 1835. His tales often mix whimsy and melancholy, leading readers into magical worlds, but don’t always have a happy ending.

The Little Mermaid tells of a young mermaid that sacrifices her voice, risks everything and gives up her freedom to live on land for a human prince. The story was later heavily adapted by Disney, the mermaid was given the name “Ariel” and it has a happy end, contrary to the original story. A bronze statue of the little mermaid can be found in Copenhagen, Denmark, in her honor.

Two stories are especially popular during the holiday season. The Little Match Girl is the story of a girl who is instructed by her father, a match maker, to sell all of her boxes of matches before coming home

on New Year’s Eve. Hungry and almost frozen, she kindles one match after the other while peeking into neatly decorated and warm houses. She sees consoling visions before freezing in the cold and is found the next morning.

The Fir Tree is a tale about a small fir tree so anxious to grow up, so anxious for greater things, that he cannot appreciate living in the moment. He wants to be cut and decorated for the holidays but eventually is left brittle and forgotten in the attic. Other stories include the Steadfast Tin Soldier, Thumbelina, the Princess and the Pea, and the Emperor’s New Clothes.

Other European tales

Due to common European and medieval cultural roots, folktales share motifs across borders, producing many local variants of similar tales.

Beauty and the Beast is a fairy tale written by the French novelist GabrielleSuzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and published in 1740. It tells of an arrogant prince who is cursed into an ugly beast and transforms his servants into household objects. He imprisons Belle who breaks the curse with her true love.

The most widely known version of Puss in Boots was written in France by Charles Perrault and published in 1697. A poor miller’s son inherits a clever cat that helps him become wealthy and marry a princess.

We may all recall Jack and the Beanstalk by Englishman Benjamin Tabart. Jack trades his family’s cow for magic beans, which grow into a giant beanstalk. He climbs the stalk to a giant’s castle in the sky, steals a hen that lays golden eggs, a magic harp, and a bag of

gold. When the giant chases him down the beanstalk, Jack grabs an axe and chops the stalk down, causing the giant to fall to his death.

Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote Peter and the Wolf. His goal in writing the orchestral suite was to introduce young children to instruments and sounds of classical music. It was first performed in the USA in March 1938 in Boston. In the story young Peter disobeys his grandfather and enters a meadow, where he meets a bird, a duck, and a cat. A wolf then appears, eats the duck, and Peter, with help from the bird, traps the wolf in a net. The story is famous for its use of instruments to represent each character, helping children learn about the orchestra.

Italian Carlo Collodi published a series of adventures with Pinocchio starting in 1881. The wooden puppet has a nose that grows longer every time he is untruthful. He faces many perils and temptations, meets characters who teach him about life, and learns goodness before he achieves his heart’s desire to become a real boy.

Arabia

And, let’s not forget the enchanting Arabian Nights that brought us Aladdin and his lamp, Princess Sheherazade and Sindbad the sailor who might let us forget the dreary season and dream of wonderous and magical worlds!

Beyond well-known fairy tales, countless legends have lingered across the centuries, their echoes still felt today. Some may even be linked to our region. But, that’s another tale to tell….

ZWICKAU from Page 1

look no further than Zwickau. Tucked in the western corner of the state, about an hour’s drive from Leipzig and Dresden, Zwickau is one of those quietly fascinating cities that often fly under the radar — yet rewards visitors who make the trip.

Here are seven reasons Zwickau is worth adding to your itinerary.

1. Follow the Music: The Robert Schumann House For lovers of classical music, Zwickau is a pilgrimage site. The great German composer Robert Schumann was born here in 1810, and his birthplace, now a museum, offers a fascinating glimpse into his life and times.

The Robert Schumann House is set in a beautifully preserved townhouse filled with manuscripts, letters, pianos, and personal artifacts that tell the story of Schumann’s creative genius – as well as his deep partnership with pianist and composer Clara Schumann.

Even if you’re not a classical music expert, the museum’s intimate atmosphere and interactive exhibits make it a moving experience. And if you visit in June, you can catch the annual Robert Schumann Festival, when the whole city fills with concerts, recitals, and cultural events celebrating its most famous son.

2. Step Into Automotive History at the August Horch Museum

If you’ve ever admired a Volkswagen, Audi, or Trabant, you have Zwickau to thank. This city has been a hub of German automotive innovation for over a century, and nowhere is that story told better than at the August Horch Museum.

Named after August Horch, the pioneering engineer who founded both Horch and Audi, this museum is set in the original Audi factory buildings. The collection spans over a hundred years of automotive development, with beautifully restored vehicles ranging from early 20th-century luxury cars to East Germany’s iconic Trabants.

The exhibits are thoughtfully designed, with immersive displays that recreate workshops, production lines, and street scenes from different eras. Whether you’re a car enthusiast or just appreciate design and history, the August Horch Museum is easily one of the best automotive museums in Germany – and worth the trip alone.

3. Explore Zwickau’s beautiful old town Zwickau’s Altstadt is a joy to wander. Despite wartime damage, much of it has been lovingly restored, and today it offers a blend of medieval, Renaissance, and neoclassical architecture.

Start your walk at the Market Square, where you’ll find the impressive Town Hall, a striking white Renaissance building that dominates the square. Nearby, the Cathedral of St. Mary stands as one of Saxony’s oldest churches, with roots dating back to the 12th century and a soaring Gothic tower that offers panoramic views over the city.

Cafes spill out onto cobbled streets, small boutiques line the alleys, and there’s a relaxed, unhurried vibe that makes Zwickau feel welcoming and authentic – a perfect place to experience Saxon life without the tourist crowds.

4. Enjoy riverside walks and green escapes

The Mulde River flows gently through Zwickau, and the city has made the most of its natural setting. The riverside promenade offers lovely walking and cycling paths, dotted with bridges, sculptures, and picnic spots.

A local favorite is the Schwanenteich Park, a tranquil green space perfect for a stroll, paddle boating, or simply relaxing by the water. On warm days, locals gather for open-air concerts, family picnics, and leisurely walks under the trees.

For those who enjoy cycling, the Mulderadweg (Mulde Cycle Path) runs through Zwickau as part of a longer scenic route stretching across Saxony — a great way to explore the countryside and nearby villages.

5. Dive into local culture at the Theater Plauen-Zwickau

Culture lovers will appreciate that Zwickau shares a joint theater company with nearby Plauen, offering a vibrant calendar of opera, drama, and ballet performances. The Gewandhaus Zwickau, where many of these take place, is an elegant neo-Baroque building with a rich history of hosting concerts and plays since the 19th century.

Even if your German isn’t fluent, attending a local performance here is a wonderful way to experience Saxon culture and see how deeply music and theater are woven into daily life. Check the theater’s schedule before your visit – you might catch a contemporary adaptation of a classic opera or a Schumann-inspired concert.

Zwickau might not be famous for its cuisine, but you’ll find plenty of hearty Saxon specialties served with genuine warmth. Dishes like Sauerbraten (marinated roast beef), Quarkkeulchen (sweet curd pancakes), and Kartoffelsuppe (potato soup) feature prominently on local menus, often

Head to Domhof Zwickau, a local favorite near the cathedral, for traditional dishes and freshly brewed craft beer in a cozy, wood-paneled setting. During Christmas, the city’s Weihnachtsmarkt fills the old town with twinkling lights, mulled wine, and stalls selling regional treats – a festive experience

Perhaps the best reason to visit Zwickau is that it offers an authentic glimpse into Saxony beyond the usual tourist circuit. It’s less crowded than Leipzig or Dresden, yet full of character – a place where history, creativity, and community spirit come together in unexpected ways. From its musical heritage and industrial innovation to its riverside beauty and friendly atmosphere, Zwickau rewards curiosity. Spend a day or two here, and you’ll find yourself drawn into its quiet rhythm – a city that tells Germany’s story in a refreshingly human scale.

US Air Force B-52s arrive in Spain for Bomber Task Force Europe 26-1

U.S. Air Force B-52 aircraft deployed from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, arrived at Morón Air Base, Spain, on Nov. 8, to conduct multilateral training operations alongside Finland, Lithuania, and Sweden, as well as other Allies

CROSSWORD

and partners, as part of Bomber Task Force Europe 26-1.

The deployment enables U.S. Air Force bomber aircrews to refine tactics, increase flexibility and strengthen coordination with Allies, increasing warfighting capabilities and readiness through exercising and operating side-by-side.

By strategically deploying forces and assets through multilateral training like this, the U.S. Air Force is better postured to respond rapidly to emerging threats and maintain a credible deterrent along Europe’s Eastern Flank and the High North. While in theater, the bomber aircrews will conduct a series of training missions simulating

operations in complex, highthreat airspace. Aircrews will train on key elements of the find, fix, track and target process –honing the speed and accuracy with which bombers and fighters are able to act against threats in real time scenarios. As aircrews practice these skills, they simultaneously train against simulat-

ed ground and air-based threats designed to deny their freedom of maneuver, requiring them to act decisively to counter threats and gain air superiority.
