Time, service, generosity: The legacies behind 2025 Length of Service ceremony

Military tradition is woven into every military ceremony. These events lead to an appreciation among the crowd and nominees, fostering a positive culture of collective recognition. Behind the Length of Service ceremony is the 86th Force Support Squadron, embracing and orchestrating these ‘wins’ at Ramstein Air Base.

The Length of Service distinguishes such individuals, including awarding ‘50 years of Service’ for Mr. Clarence “Charlie” Searchwell, as an operations assistant with the Officer Club, 86th FSS.

Charlie understood the value of time. As an immigrant from the blue mountains of Jamaica, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950s New York during a divisive time where racial segregation was codified into law.

“I immigrated to America and I had to sign a piece of paper saying ‘I will serve’ — no draft, I had to serve for my citizenship,” Charlie exclaimed. “When I joined the military during segregation - I couldn’t even vote.”

Regardless of the limitations placed on Charlie, he continued to pursue his dream of playing professional soccer. This strife, dedication and resilience led him to his initial and final duty station at Ramstein AB, where he felt comfortable, respected - there he found his sweetheart where marriage and commitment scored together.

As he summarized, ‘I used up my 24 hours

a day’ while maintaining his health and fitness as a professional soccer player until he was 80-years-old. The rest of his hours consisted of serving Airmen and families from

dawn to dusk. He worked at the commissary until 4 p.m. and then shifted to working as a dishwasher until closing. From learning Dutch, French and German, he continues to embody community and a hardworking spirit.

“The Air Force is better today, and the most valuable thing I have is my timethat’s what I gave the Air Force,” Charlie explained. “I give you my time, that means a lot to me. Don’t waste it - you can’t buy it, borrow it, save it, but you can throw it away.”

His motto ‘You treat me right, I treat you better’ echoes in his everyday responsibilities and is tied to his character as a brother and within the veteran community.

Transitioning from service member to veteran, Charlie continues to regularly offer support across various departments throughout his time at Ramstein AB. Charlie upholds the same moral standards and work ethic he demonstrated on his very first day.

“My whole family served in the military; my brother just retired as an Air Force Lt Col,” Charlie said. “Every year on POW/MIA day I go outside to attend their ceremony, I never miss it. ”

Ever since the early 1960s, Charlie’s passion for excellence both professionally and personally continues to shine. He has become a living repository of Air Force heritage, ethos and institutional knowledge.

“I’ve known Charlie for 9 years, living in Ramstein,” said Mr. Riley Pyles, Strategic Cell for U.S. Space Force Program Executive Office Military Communications & Positioning Navigation and Timing contractor. “I’m impressed by his dedication and energy, which I have witnessed him pouring into others and never asking for anything in return over the decades. He’s definitely a one-of-a-kind servant leader.”

During his time at Ramstein Air Base, he mentored and guided numerous young individuals, positively influencing their careers and lives and continues to do so. Similarly, two local nationals were awarded at the Length of Service ceremony on Dec. 4.

“Charlie is a legend around Ramstein and contributed so much more to the KMC community that many of us will ever know about,” said Mr. Jude Sorg, 86th FSS deputy director. “Biannually we conduct a length of service ceremony where individuals from 20-60 years of service are recognized, like Charlie and many others.”

EUCOM commander visits Ramstein, meets with Airmen, Guardians, Allies

in Africa

U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich, U.S. European Command commander and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Holland, USEUCOM command senior enlisted leader, met with Airmen, Guardians and Allies at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 25-26.

Grynkewich gained first-hand insight from Airmen and Guardians at U.S. Air Forces Europe - Air Forces Africa, NATO Allied Air Command and U.S. Space Forces Europe-Space Forces Africa. He also met with key leadership and Allies to discuss current capabilities, mission integration, and future readiness needs for Air Force and Space Force operations across the theater.

“Air and space power are crucial to the Joint force and USEUCOM’s ability to project combat power in support of global operations. This visit allowed me to see updates to both services and how they are integrating to ensure our forward line of defense for the U.S. homeland is ready for any challenge,” said Grynkewich. “In addition to meeting with U.S. forces, engaging with

leaders across AIRCOM and seeing broader progress of the Alliance in the air and space domains demonstrates their recommitment to deterrence and the collective defense of Europe.”

Grynkewich also visited the 603rd AOC, where he took a deeper look into Integrated Air and Missile Defense, a critical mission that enables a swift response to air and

missile threats from any direction. Allies have deployed and tested IAMD capabilities to NATO’s eastern flank to ensure their readiness, while exercises like Spartan Shield 25-2 provide the U.S. Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps forces the opportunity to train in various exercise scenarios while manning mobile IAMD command, control and communication centers.

“The threats we face today are real and rapidly evolving. We’re working quickly to adapt to the new threat environment, to train and integrate with Allies and partners in ways we have not done in the past,” said Lt. Gen. Jason T. Hinds U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander. “Being ready requires us to develop new tactics, techniques and procedures, harness innovative

technologies and empower Airmen at all levels, and I’m excited to see the progress we’re making.”

Grynkewich also took the opportunity to recognize outstanding Airmen and Guardians for their superior performance and contributions to the mission.

Tech. Sgt. Kevin Todaro, USAFEAFAFRICA headquarters Command and Control operations training manager, received a coin from Gen. Grynkewich for outstanding service on an international NATO-USAFEAFAFRICA training agreement, developing the unit’s training plan as training lead and mentoring partner nations.

Grynkewich also recognized Staff Sgt. Britni Anderson-Davis, USAFEAFAFRICA headquarters European Central Altitude Reservation Facility technician, for her work offsetting a 40 percent manning shortfall while maintaining 24/7 operations and supporting critical Bomber Task Force Missions.

“We have an important mission and achieving that mission would not be possible without our dedicated Airmen and Guardians,” said Grynkewich. “I’m confident we have the right people for these challenges, and we’ll continue to get after the complex challenges together.”

Forging a foundation of lethality: Security Forces Airmen train alongside Phoenix Ravens

photos

Music echoed down the hall leading to the combatives training room where new Airmen assigned to the 86th Security Forces Squadron watched Staff Sgts. Kristen Wurtz and Victoria Kelley, 446th Security Forces Squadron Phoenix Raven team members, demonstrate closequarters defense tactics at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 24-25.

The Airmen were focused and motivated, as the two Raven instructors recalibrated their positioning and guided Airmen through each technique and movement.

Airmen rolled through the drills, testing their control and use of different angles, as Kelley and Wurtz moved between groups and corrected the Airmens’ hand and leg placements. They ensured that they were shaping Defenders who can respond at a moment’s notice

and react with precision and skill during unpredictable, life or death situations.

“As a Phoenix Raven, we are attached to the aircrews of mobility aircraft to provide physical security for U.S. resources in environments with little to no security,” Kelley said. “As security forces, training combatives and batons is essential. We want to be proficient with our less than lethal weapon and being functionally fit is a crucial aspect to this sort of training.”

Phoenix Ravens are an elite security forces team that undergo intense specialized training to carry out missions that demand a higher level of physical strength, mental grit and tactical capability. Only a select few get to attend and graduate from the schoolhouse at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, making the Raven tab rare and well-respected.

“The Ravens help improve the training because they have

extra skills and knowledge regular Defenders like myself may not have,” said Senior Airman Alexandro Ochoa, 86th Security Forces Squadron training instructor.

“Although I’ve done Raven training, the actual Raven tab really inspires and motivates Airmen when they see it, especially new Airmen.”

Sharing their knowledge drives the culture of fitness that builds a mission-ready and lethal force at Ramstein by equipping Airmen with the foundational skills necessary for such high stakes security operations.

Understanding the physical techniques available to Defenders was only one key component of the

training, the other was knowing when and how to use them.

“I want the Airmen to understand the capabilities of less than lethal weapons while building confidence through repetition,” Kelley said. “Understanding the weight of lethal and non-lethal weapons creates the sharpest security forces members.”

Ochoa added that working alongside the Ravens not only fostered better Defenders, but also elevated his own method of teaching as a training instructor.

“This training is different from the usual because when it comes to phase training we have our own way of instructing, but with the

Ravens, they are able to not only teach the phase members but also myself,” Ochoa said. “I am learning things that I can use in the future to instruct phase members and make myself a better, and more skilled, instructor.”

The instructors underscored the importance of attention-to-detail during the training, as it may one day determine the outcome of a real-world encounter.

“I hope new Airmen take all of the information from the Ravens that they can,” Ochoa said. “These skills Ravens have and are willing to share really could save one of their lives or someone else’s life one day.”

Invisible becomes tangible: Ramstein Airmen build radiation cloud chamber

The room is dim except for a soft glow of light from a flashlight pressed against the condensated glass of the tank. A faint shimmer bounces across the surface as cold vapors gather, swirling like fog lifting off the surface. Almost mistakable to the naked eye, thin white streaks coming together in a dance through the mist, tiny bursts of motion that disappear as quickly as they appear.

And for the first time ever constructed at Ramstein in November, those fingerprints are finally visible.

Standing around the tank, Airmen from the 86th Medical Group bioenvironmental engineering flight lean closer, gazing at the traces of subatomic particles from a safely contained radioactive source. Engineers create these wisps of radiated particles traditionally from a laboratory environment, but ingenuity allowed these Airmen to showcase these hazardous vapors in a practical environment.

“The cloud chamber helps visualize radiation since a lot of people are scared of it once they hear the word,” said Senior Airman Brandon Wagner, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron bioenvironmental engineering technician.

Wagner was the sole Airman that initiated and spearheaded the build of the cloud chamber tank to better educate his fellow wingmen.

“I think it helps visualize and demystify radiation by bringing a visual aid to personnel and civil-

ians.” Wagner, bringing a training grounded in ionizing radiation, expands upon concepts that have the potential to bolster mission readiness and crisis response.

The project began as a simple idea: help Airmen understand radiation, not as an obscure piece of information found in monotonous training slides, but as a real and observable phenomenon, Wagner said. “Radiation is part of our world. When you see the traces it leaves behind, you begin to understand it in a completely different way.” Cloud chambers are typically constructed within controlled laboratories or university research facilities. “I have never

heard of it happening outside a laboratory environment,” said Tech. Sgt. Alex Shuttleworth, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron bioenvironmental flight noncommissioned officer in charge. “I asked a couple of my friends and they have never built one before.” But Wagner, who describes himself proudly as a “radiation nerd,” had been eager to build one since learning about them from a previous mentor.

For the bioenvironmental engineering flight, the chamber is a scientific curiosity. Radiation is a core part of their mission. “It helps bring awareness to our new Airmen because it is a difficult

subject to learn about,” Wagner said. “Being able to see first hand what radiation is can be the first step in understanding how to give health risks to commanders.”

Inside the chamber, Airmen can distinguish short, delicate trails left by alpha, beta, and x-ray particles, the residuals of space curiosities from supernovas and distant galaxies.

“The main ones you’ll see in the tank are called muons,” Shuttleworth said. “They shoot down from cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere. And then we have our sources that emit alpha and x-rays. Being able to see them helps you visualize and under-

stand the whole concept of radiation.”

While the chamber is a simple device, its impact is far-reaching.

“If we ever respond to a radiation incident such as a dirty bomb, a radiological release, even something much worse, it helps build our confidence, and then our commander’s confidence, that we know what we’re talking about,” Shuttleworth explained. Without laboratory-grade sources, the team used small, safe check sources to avoid creating any hazardous conditions. “We’re not going to create a radioactive incident inside of Germany, so we’re using what we have, and it still teaches us to understand radiation better,” he said.

The chamber also has the potential to support other first responders, including 786th Civil Engineering Squadron Emergency Management, 786th CES Fire Department and Emergency Services, and 86th Security Forces Squadron, helping to create a shared baseline understanding of radiological hazards for those serving in the frontlines of base defense.

As the fog in the chamber rolls and particles leave their fleeting trails, the Airmen watch fumes create outlines of science being brought in a practical environment. For these Airmen, it’s more than a scientific display, it’s a new way of seeing the mission. “It’s the first step in understanding,” Shuttleworth remarked. He concurred that once you see radiation, the team’s understanding expands, penetrating visible to tangible, ensuring trusted counsel and acute protection of personnel.

U.S. Airmen assigned to the 86 Operational Medical Readiness Squadron, observe radiation particles during a cloud chamber demonstration at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 24. The cloud chamber is a beneficial way for Airmen to better understand how radiation works and how different levels of protection will keep personnel safe.

Ramstein hosts Wings of Wisdom speed mentorship program

Story & photos by Airman Paden Henry 86th Airlift

Airmen and non-commissioned officers across Team Ramstein sat down for a focused, face-to-face mentorship in the first-ever Wings of Wisdom event at Ramstein Air Base, Dec, 3.

Wings of Wisdom used a speed-mentoring format in which Airmen rotated to a new senior NCO every few minutes to have brief but purposeful discussions sharing their insight on planning professional objectives, personal goals, and elevating communication methods.

The purpose was to give Airmen multiple viewpoints in one session, providing guidance and honest conversation.

Airman 1st Class Baldemar Campos, 86th Maintenance Operations Squadron maintenance scheduler, organized the event after being inspired by a maintenance chief, who held an informal sitdown with Airmen within the unit. He said the experience of having leadership taking time out of their day was an eye opening experience and how important it is to have true, honest human connection. The chief who did this, spoke without the rank but as a fellow Airman, and that moment stayed with Campos.

“He showed me what it felt like to be seen and heard,” Campos said. “To have someone high-ranking take time out of their day to talk to us and say, ‘You’re impor-

tant,’ I wanted to give that to the Airmen across the wing.”

Senior NCO’s shared candid perspectives about Air Force life, career planning, cross-training, preventing burnout and the pressures of being a leader. The Airmen had the benefit of being amongst a variety of senior NCO’s to share their different perspectives and give the opportunity for Airmen to ask questions and get a point-of-view they wouldn’t usually see.

“Personal connection is essential to building trust and confidence, not just between ranks but also as human beings,” said Senior Master Sgt. Trevor J. Derr, 86th

Maintenance Group quality assurance superintendent. “Trust is built faster in person than across an email or phone call. When Airmen can read the body language and perceive the sincerity of a mentor in front of them, it has the potential for them to open up about their struggles and goals. This fosters a deeper connection that electronic communication often struggles to achieve.”

The goal is for this program to become a quarterly event at the 86th Airlift Wing, to build and strengthen the relationship between airmen and leaders through a culture of engagement.

405 AFSB command team assesses ongoing APS-2 maintenance transition at Coleman

Story & photos by Joe Scheff, 405th AFSB Special Projects Officer 405th Army Field Support BrigadeEurope & Africa

The command team from the 405th Army Field Support Brigade conducted a site visit, terrain walk and key leader engagement at the Coleman Army Prepositioned Stocks -2 worksite in Mannheim recently to assess the ongoing transition of APS-2 maintenance operations between service providers.

Army Col. Ernest Lane II, the commander of the 405th AFSB, and Command Sgt. Maj. Patrick Marrill, the brigade’s senior enlisted leader, walked the site Dec. 2 with team members from Army Field Support Battalion-Germany, Logistics Civil Augmentation Program-Europe, 405th Contracting Support Brigade and other key players.

The Support Operations team from AFSBn-Germany provided Lane and Marrill with a brief of the worksite, highlighting key successes as well as friction points in the current execution of transitioning maintenance operations at Coleman from one service provider to another. During this terrain walk, Lane emphasized the brigade’s priorities, which remain employee safety, property accountability, and the seamless transfer of operational knowledge during the transition.

“Logistics operations in Europe have some unique challenges, and the LOGCAP program will help provide the needed flexibility to maximize readiness and respond to the theater’s priorities when called upon,” Lane said during the visit.

Lane and Marrill also took the time to recognize several leaders and key team players for their outstanding support to APS-2 operations in Europe as well as their part in the transition efforts and meeting U.S. Army Materiel Command enterprise priorities.

Lane presented commander’s coins for excellence to Maj. Charles Pearson, AFSBn-Germany’s Support Operations officer; Maj. May Sena, LOGCAP-Europe’s senior planner; Maj. Lane and Marrill said their site visit to the Coleman APS-2 worksite was a great opportunity to recognize excellence and reinforce readiness across the 405th AFSB and the AMC enterprise in Europe.

The Coleman APS-2 worksite is one of six APS-2 worksites in Europe, and AFSBn-Germany is one of four APS-2 battalions under the command and control of the 405th AFSB. The 405th AFSB’s APS-2 program provides turn-key power projection packages ready to deploy at a moment’s notice while helping to reduce the amount of equipment needed from the deploying forces’ home stations.

The 405th AFSB is the premier logistics integrator and synchro-

nizer for U.S. European Command, enabling readiness solutions to ‘Support the Warrior’ by operationalizing U.S. Army Materiel Command capabilities and delivering readiness within the U.S. Army Europe and Africa areas of responsibility at the point of need.

The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging AMC’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces.

Patrick Marrill, the brigade’s senior enlisted leader, visited Coleman to assess the ongoing transition of APS-2 maintenance operations between service providers.

Mission ready: Building financial fitness for the fight

The Air Force prepares Airmen to respond to emergencies, navigate high-pressure operations and execute the mission without hesitation, but one challenge isn’t found in the skies or on the flightline. It’s the financial stress many face behind the scenes. Left unmanaged, it can undermine focus, mental health and overall mission readiness long before an Airman steps onto the job.

Financial readiness plays a critical role in sustaining the force, yet it can be overlooked in aspects of an Airman’s overall preparedness. In a profession built on precision and discipline, ensuring service members have the education and support to manage their finances also plays a pivotal role in maintaining a mission-capable Air Force.

“Finances can be exhausting, everyone comes from different backgrounds and a different level of knowledge about money, but financial health is just as important as physical and mental health,” said Janet Crider, 86th Force Support Squadron Military and Family Readiness Center personal financial counselor. “In order to do your job

effectively, you have to know you can take care of yourself and your family.”

The M&FRC offers a wide range of financial services designed to meet Airmen exactly where they are in their personal and professional journeys. Through workshops, unit briefings and one-on-one appointments, the M&FRC provides education on budgeting, debt management, credit understanding, saving, investing and navigating the Thrift Savings Plan.

“The first step is simply to walk in,” Crider said. “Nine times out of ten, people leave my office feeling relieved because we set goals and build a plan, we’re not here to judge anyone, we just want them to walk out a little stronger than when they came in.”

In addition to the support provided by the M&FRC, Airmen have access to several other resources designed to help them navigate financial emergencies and unexpected challenges.

The Air Force Aid Society can be a beneficial tool available, offering interest-free loans, grants and emergency assistance to service members facing unexpected expenses such as car repairs, emergency travel, rent shortages or essential household needs.

“People are often nervous to talk

about what they’re spending their money on, it’s hard,” said Samantha Gregory, 86th FSS M&FRC personal

financial counselor. “Our goal is to help Airmen understand where their money is going so they can regain

their power. Learning to organize finances, build savings and create healthy spending habits, truly changes their lives.”

Service members can strengthen their financial resilience and create long-term stability by prioritizing debt reduction, building an emergency fund and investing through the TSP or a Roth IRA. When Airmen contribute a portion of their pay to these accounts, they harness the power of compound interest to grow wealth over time, ensuring both immediate and future financial security.

“We’re free, we’re here and we serve the entire installation,” Gregory said. “Our mission is to support Airmen and families with the tools and education they need to stay financially ready and focused on the mission.”

The M&FRC on Ramstein Air Base offers walk-in support, scheduled appointments and unit briefings tailored to individual needs. Airmen and families can contact the M&FRC at DSN: 480-5100 or +49 637147-5100 for assistance. Additional education and resources on financial readiness across the Air Force can also be found at the official Air Force Personnel Center website: https://www.afpc.af.mil/Military-andFamily/Financial-Readiness/

Training to win: Air Force Major earns top USAFE-AFAFRICA nursing development award

U.S. Air Force Major Savannah Jumpp, Executive Officer to the Director of the Defense Health Network Europe, was named the 2025 U.S. Air Forces Europe – Air Forces Africa winner of the Outstanding Achievement in Nursing Force Development.

The annual award recognizes one officer, in the ranks of Captain to Lieutenant Colonel, serving in a nursing assignment with primary responsibilities in education and training. Recipients must demonstrate exceptional duty performance, professionalism, and a commitment to developing the nursing force.

Before joining the DHN-EUR staff, Jumpp served as the Director of Hospital Education for Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest U.S. medical center outside of the continental United States. In that role, she oversaw education, training, and professional development for more than 4,000 total force personnel.

“Working at LRMC was unique because it’s a truly joint environment,” Jumpp said. “We had Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, civilians, volunteers, and even allied partners who relied on my team to make sure they had the training they needed to handle whatever came their way.”

The medical center’s large scope of providing medical support for four U.S. combatant command meant her team had to prepare staff for everything from delivering tactical care during military operations to responding to emergency department crises and administering routine check-ups.

“Education and training is a

behind-the-scenes force multiplier,” explains Jumpp. “We take care of those who take care of our patients by making sure they have the training and certification to handle any situation.”

Jumpp, who earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice from The Ohio State University in 2023 with a focus on executive leadership and evidence-based practice, credits her academic background and experience as an Air Force nurse for providing a strong foundation to lead LRMC’s education and training program.

“I’m passionate about education and training because it’s the starting point for patient care,” she said.

Navy Captain Joseph Desamero, Chief Nursing Officer for Defense Health Network Europe, recognized how the impact of Jumpp’s work at LRMC extended across multiple continents.

“Education and training are the

cornerstone of medical readiness and ready, reliable healthcare delivery,” said Desamero. “Major Jumpp’s leadership ensured every member of the LRMC team, from volunteers to experts, was prepared to support both routine care and the most complex operational missions. Her work directly strengthened medical readiness in the hospital and in the field.”

In addition to overseeing medical education requirements, Jumpp and her team managed professional development courses, including executive leader training, which prepared mid-level leaders to succeed in LRMC’s joint environment.

“In a hospital like LRMC, someone from one military service will very likely supervise members of another service or civilian staff,” notes Jumpp. “Our executive leadership course helps supervisors understand the administrative and professional needs of every member of their team so they can lead

effectively in a joint environment.”

One of Jumpp’s favorite experiences was supporting the high school students across the Kaiserslautern Military Community who visited LRMC for career practicums.

“I loved working with students because they bring such an interesting perspective,” she explains. “It was an honor to introduce the next generation of healthcare professionals to the military health system and watch them get excited about the possibilities.”

Jumpp also led several process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing readiness and patient care.

“There is always room for improvement, especially in a hospital as dynamic as LRMC, and it was really fulfilling to see how those changes impacted our staff and patients by improving their experiences working at and receiving care from LRMC,” she said.

This award highlights the broad influence of Jumpp’s work across the European Theater.

“This recognition reflects Major Jumpp’s extraordinary contributions in an exceptionally complex joint environment,” notes Desamero. “Her ability to build teams, solve problems, and elevate the performance of others sets her apart as a leader in the military health system.”

Jumpp was recently selected to serve as the Chief Nursing Officer for the 27th Special Operations Group at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico, a transition she credits to her time at LRMC.

“My role as the Director of Hospital Education taught me to see the bigger picture and to use that to ensure our staff was trained and ready to handle any mission, any time, anywhere,” said Jumpp. “That’s the mindset I’m taking into my next role, so we can provide the best care possible for our patients.”

After winning at the USAFEAFAFRICA level, Jumpp will now advance to compete at the Air Force level against award recipients from across the Air Force’s other major commands.

Quiet ramp, loud legacy: Connecticut Airmen conclude high-tempo deployment in East Africa

The heat settled over the flightline as the sun dipped toward the horizon, casting a deep orange glow across the open ramp and reflecting off the water beyond the perimeter fence. Dust drifted lazily across the ramp, stirred by the last slow rotation of the C-130H’s propellers as they wound down after another long day of flying.

For a moment, everything felt suspended–the noise, the pace, the constant movement that defined the past months.

It may have looked like the end of a routine mission to anyone else, but to the Airmen who flew, fixed, loaded and protected the C-130s day after day across East Africa, this final shutdown carried more weight than any pallet they’d ever delivered.

It was the quiet punctuation at the end of a deployment defined by grit, precision and undeniable impact.

A Rotation Defined by Tempo

Airmen from the Connecticut Air National Guard’s 103rd Airlift Wing took on the challenge and provided critical airlift for the region as the sole C-130 squadron on the continent.

During their time as the 75th

Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, they executed one of its busiest deployments in recent history. The squadron flew 1,103 flight hours, the most in at least three years, executed 467 sorties, conducted three combat airdrops, the first in nearly two years and the only unit to do more than one in a single rotation, and maintained a 90 percent fully missioncapable rate.

They moved 1,519 tons of cargo, completed 2,136 maintenance actions, supported five aeromedical evacuation patients and executed seven distinguished visitor airlifts, in addition to sustaining a 24/7 alert posture for personnel recovery, casualty evacuation, medical evacuation and East Africa Response Force taskings.

Operating with only four C-130Hs and a lean team, the squadron touched every corner of tactical airlift: low-level routes, night ops, unimproved airstrips, combat offloads and full-spectrum personnel and cargo airdrop. But behind the statistics was a story of constant adaptation.

Challenges Without a Checklist

Flying in East Africa meant unpredictable airfields, shifting requirements and missions that didn’t always come with “book answers.”

“Our time here was about more than simply executing the mission,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Christopher Smorol, 75th EAS

commander. “It was about solving problems in real-time as a team.”

Maintenance felt that reality daily. Supply couldn’t always keep pace with demand, so maintainers relied on experience and creativity.

“Our team adapted and improvised to keep every aircraft mission-ready,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Avery Fried, 75th EAS production superintendent. “That’s what made this deployment possible.”

Their performance was unprecedented. The squadron accumulated more flying hours in three months than their home station produces in a year–accomplished with half the aircraft while running a round-theclock alert line.

The Airmen Behind the Mission

While aircraft and cargo were moving constantly, the intel shop worked quietly in the background, shaping every mission before it ever left the ground.

“We were always tracking threat updates, airfield conditions and regional shifts,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Kaylie Guerrera, 75th EAS intelligence analyst. “Our assessments determined when and where aircrews could land safely. Things changed fast out here, sometimes in the middle of a mission.”

One night illustrated that reality clearly.

A route that had been assessed as safe hours earlier suddenly presented new risks. The intel team had minutes, not hours, to push updated guidance to aircrew preparing to launch.

“It was chaotic, but we got it done,” Guerrera said. “Seeing how intel, ops and maintenance came together in those moments showed me how important teamwork really is.”

Working in a small shop meant wearing multiple hats, briefing crews, tracking threats and updating the common operating picture, but it also meant seeing the impact of their work firsthand.

wasn’t about a single mission, it was about a mindset.

“It’s hard to point to just one moment,” he said. “What defined our time here was seeing Airmen at every level take initiative, solve problems and create lasting impact, not just inside the squadron, but across the Group and with our joint partners.”

He noted how easily the unseen sacrifices could be overlooked back home: the long duty days, unpredictable taskings and demanding conditions. But every pallet delivered, every forward base reached and every patient moved came from that quiet devotion to the mission.

Mission Complete

As the final aircraft wound down on the ramp, the deployment’s weight settled in, not just in what the 75th accomplished, but in how they accomplished it.

“My hope is that years from now, our Airmen remember more than just the stress and hard days,” Smorol said. “I hope they remember how those experiences shaped them, how they strengthened each other, and how they left the 75th better than when we arrived.”

ABTEIKIRCHENKONZERT, SOLSTICE & NORDIC CHRISTMAS

DEC. 21, 5 P.M., ABTEIKIRCHE, OTTERBERG

Solsnu - Solstice and Nordic Christmas, the Vocal Ensemble Nordic Voices from Norway will present an advent concert in the Abbey Church. In December, the sun is at its lowest point in Norway. It’s as if the pace of life in the cities, nature, and people slows to a minimum. One of Norway’s most famous songwriters, Halvdan Sivertsen, wrote in one of his songs: “Winter is long, but it doesn’t last forever.” At this time, people gather, eat, light candles, and wait for the sun to return over the mountaintops, awakening the world. This is “Solsnu”—an ancient Norwegian tradition that coincides with the Christian Christmas festival, making December a month rich in tradition. This richness is reflected in Norwegian music and in this concert with works by Lasse Thoresen (Solbøn, a prayer to the sun), lullabies, as well as contemporary compositions: the longing for light, the need for human connection, and the celebration of Christian history. Tickets at the Tourist Information, Hauptstrasse 54, Otterberg or online at https://www.reservix.de/tickets-solsnu-in-otterbergabteikirche-otterberg

ABC IN KMC: Teddy travels to America

Many readers may recall the adventures of Paddington Bear from the “darkest of Peru” who was found at Paddington Station in London with an old hat, a battered suitcase and in a duffle coat. And, most people have heard of the teddy bear. But, did you know Paddington was a descendent of the first teddy that originated from Germany and then traveled across the seas?

Margarete Steiff, the creator of the teddy bear, was born in Giengen, near Ulm in Baden-Württemberg, in 1847. She wrote the first chapter of an unprecedented success story with a pincushion in the shape of an elephant which further led to Teddy traveling to America.

She was born as a cheerful and healthy baby but was infected with polio at an early age and challenged with spending her life in a wheelchair. Creative and positiveminded, her life motto was “Freedom is believing in yourself.”

After a series of promising therapies, at the age of 17 she had to face the fact that she would spend her life handicapped. She decided to become a seamstress, and her father established a sewing room within the house. There she began sewing ladies’ fashion, when one day a traveling salesman came to town with a new and innovative invention from the United States, a mechanical sewing machine.

Against all advice, she ordered the expensive machine which was soon to be delivered. Confronted with the fact that she couldn’t operate the foot pedal with her impaired legs, she quickly discovered the magic trick of turning the machine around, operating the wheel with her left hand and sewing backwards.

She ordered further sewing machines and the salesman became a friend and frequent guest, which let Margarete dream of tying the knot with him. Unfortunately, one day he confessed that he highly respected her, but was planning to marry elsewhere.

Margarete was torn between drowning in self-pity and sorrow or funneling her pain into active energy by sewing day and night. Fortunately, she chose the latter and soon discovered the pattern of a small elephant in a fashion journal and decided to sew it in felt to be used as a pincushion.

The cushions sold like hot cakes and to her own surprise, small children were fascinated and used them as toys. This again inspired her to manufacture other toy animals and consequently open her own business in 1893, while hiring a number of seamstresses for help.

Her successful toys were presented at the Leipzig Toy Fair and the first international business relationship with Harrods, London, was established 1895. Her favorite nephew Richard, who had studied arts, joined the company with creative designs and new ideas.

In 1902, Richard designed the “Bear 55 PB,” the world’s first plush bear with mov-

able arms and legs and used cuddly mohair plush to make it soft and adorable. The bear was presented at the Leipzig Toy Fair when where an American dealer discovered it, immediately fell in love with the adorable animal and ordered 3,000 on the spot.

The good news first overwhelmed the small company, as the bears needed to be produced within a limited time, and ready for sales during the holiday season.

Again, Margarete and Richard were quick to react, enlarged the factory and staff and began 24-hour mass production to secure the deadline.

The bear became a sensation in America, and it is said that none other than President

Theodore Roosevelt was the name patron, who was nicknamed Teddy.

In an effort to prevent others from copying the concept, the trademark “Steiff –Button in Ear” was created, which is still used today. By 1907 Steiff produced 1.7 million toys and 973,999 teddy bears with 400 employees and 1,800 home workers. Margarete died of pneumonia in 1909 as the head of a successful family-run business.

Richard remained in the company and introduced assembly line production in the 1920’s and commenced cooperation with Disney in 1931. In the year 2000 an original Steiff bear produced in 1912 was sold for the record amount of 150,212 Euros at

Christie’s in London. The Steiff Museum in Giengen opened 2005 and Margarete Steiff was honored in the “Hall of Fame” of the toy industry 2020.

Should you by chance discover a Steiff toy at your parent’s or grandparent’s house, cherish it as a treasure of Margarete’s legacy. Some large department stores present animated life size displays of Steiff animals in their decorated windows during the holiday season. Or, let yourself be enchanted in one of the Steiff stores with animals and children’s wear in larger cities in Germany, such as in Munich, Düsseldorf and Wiesbaden and step into a cuddly wonderland!

Military working dogs enhance readiness through helicopter MEDEVAC training

Veterinarians and veterinary care technicians from Veterinary readiness Activity, Rheinland Pfalz facilitated a training exercise focused on helicopter medical evacuation familiarization for the 525th Military Police Detachment in Wiesbaden on Dec 2.

This unique training event provided Military Working Dogs and their handlers with critical exposure to helicopter operations, reinforcing the importance of readiness and safety in high-stress situations.

According to veterinary care technician Sgt. Joshua Carr, the training aimed to provide confidence for both, MWDs and handlers in navigating the helicopter environment.

Pilots from A Company, 1-214th Aviation Regiment shared their expertise, offering insights into helicopter operations and the specific procedures involved in MEDEVAC missions. This collaboration underscored the importance of inter-unit cooperation in enhancing operational readiness.

“This training is unique and extremely valuable. The goal is to expose the MWDs to helicopters as much as possible, so if they ever need to be evacuated, they aren’t

encountering this environment for the first time,” said Carr.

This proactive approach is essential for ensuring that MWDs remain calm and focused during real-world operations.

“This is the first time me and her [the MWD] have received the training,” said Staff Sgt. Aaron Stevens, control and explosives working dog handler. “It helped me bond with her. The training provides reps downrange or in emergency situations, so the dog is familiar with the process and we can expedite the time of evacuation.”

The training involved various exercises designed to acclimate the dogs to the sounds and movements of helicopters. Handlers worked closely with their MWDs, guiding them through the process of boarding and exiting the aircraft.

By familiarizing the dogs with the helicopter environment, the training aimed to reduce anxiety and improve their overall performance during potential MEDEVAC scenarios.

MWDs play a vital role in military operations, serving in capacities such as explosive detection, patrol, and search and rescue. Their ability to remain composed directly impacts mission success and the safety of their handlers.

By integrating helicopter famil-

iarization into their training regimen, the 525th Military Police Detachment is ensuring that these dogs are prepared for any situation they may face in the field.

Moreover, this training not only benefits the MWDs but also enhances the readiness of their handlers. Understanding how to manage their dogs during helicopter operations is crucial for handlers, who must maintain control and ensure the safety of their canine partners.

The insights provided by the aviation pilots were invaluable, offering handlers a deeper understanding of the operational dynamics involved in airlifting personnel and animals alike.

As the training concluded, the handlers expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to participate in such a vital exercise. Stevens noted, “This training gives us peace of mind. Knowing that our MWDs are comfortable with helicopters means we can focus on our mission, knowing they are ready for anything.”

By exposing working dogs to the helicopter environment, VRA, RP and the 525th are taking proactive steps to ensure that both dogs and handlers are mission-ready, no matter the circumstances they may encounter.

Former US Air Force air traffic controller now reaches new heights as family doctor

The sky was never the limit for Air Force Capt. (Dr.) Lindsay Slimski — it was only the beginning. After a difficult childhood, she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 2005 – helping planes take off but never leaving her lifelong dream behind. A unique program from the Uniformed Services University would take her there.

A turbulent upbringing, a new start

In her youth, she lived with extended family, friends, “moving around from home to home, going to school, working, getting straight A’s, but on my own. It was just wherever I could get support,” she said.

As her mother struggled with mental health challenges, Slimski went to “the hospital with her and watched how supportive the medical people were … every step of the way. Seeing the length that people were going to, to help somebody in need really stuck with me.”

Through that experience, she started developing her passion to help people. “I just wanted to bring it forward and help in other ways. Going to medical school was always my dream.”

She tried college, but “I had no one to look to for any guidance on how to do anything … nobody in my family had ever gone to college. I dropped out after a year and thought, ‘OK, I’ll join the Air Force because that kind of seems like a good option for me to jump start.’”

Enlisting in the U.S. Air Force “opened up a lot of doors to me that I don’t think I would have known about or even how to pursue,” she said.

She trained as an air traffic controller, a demanding role. “It was a great career. I really enjoyed it because it was fast paced,” she said. “You have to be able to think quickly, process

information, and change plans. I always had one thought: ‘Maybe one day I could use this to figure out how to become a doctor.’”

While serving at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, Slimski took college classes and got a degree in aeronautics. She also took prerequisite medical school coursework but working night shifts and rotating schedules made completing it impossible. Then she read an article about a new program at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences called the Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Program, known as EMDP2.

The highly competitive program is a two-year academic journey towards medical school, designed to help promising, motivated enlisted personnel from across the military services become future military doctors. EMDP2 offers an intensive pre-medical program, mentoring, and Medical College Admission Test preparation. The program also allows service members to maintain their current rank, pay and benefits while going to school full-time at George Mason University’s Prince William County Campus in Virginia.

“As soon as I saw it, I thought it sounded like the perfect program for me because it would solve these issues. I could finish this,” she said.

She applied and was accepted. While eight months pregnant Slimski began school as the first and only woman in the program’s inaugural 2014 class of 10 students.

“It was all men that first year, except for me,” she said. “It just felt like a normal military experience, because a lot of times you end up being the only female.”

Two weeks into the program, she gave birth to her daughter, Kailani. “I ended up taking a week off with the newborn and then played catch-up basically for that week because it is such a rigorous schedule,” Slimski said. Her mother-in-law stepped in to help while

her husband, Donald, an air traffic controller himself, was stationed several hours away and then on a remote assignment, so she was able to complete pre-medicine classes with her cohort.

The EMDP2 provided “a much stronger bond” than other preparatory programs, she felt, and “everybody feels like they’re connected, and they want other people to succeed and are just very supportive and making sure they can succeed. Honestly, it was pretty incredible.”

She also went to Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, for commissioned officer training. “I learned about the leadership role, but I’m not really big at leading drills because I really don’t have that loud, projecting voice. But I got more leadership focus, so that was more interesting and fun.”

Slimski was accepted into medical school at USU while pregnant with her second daughter, Ellayah, and caring for Kailani and her two stepchildren. While juggling family life and relocating, she credited the program with setting her up for success. “The program was a really good, solid foundation for medical school. They walked us through all of the application steps, so you can check the boxes. It was foolproof.”

Family medicine with purpose

When it came time to select her specialty, Slimski chose family medicine. “Family medicine is really great in that it’s kind of a little bit of everything,” she said.

Slimski, a mother of two and a stepmom, is now a Military Health System family medicine physician with the 1st Special Operations Medical Group - Hurlburt Field, Florida. She cares for active duty service members while supporting high operational demands.

“It’s really rewarding because there is a really high-ops tempo here and … they really do push the mission and readiness,” she said. “I really do enjoy it a lot. It’s challenging.”

Slimski said her enlisted background and an “ingrained” sense to complete the mission has shaped her success in the medical field.

“We have an extra military bearing and realization that what we do has an effect on people and we know how to carry forward. Basically, we know what we’re supposed to do when we’re supposed to do it,” she said. “I think (service members) have more of a deeper understanding of the fact that what they do has an impact in the long run.”

Yet it’s more than just fulfilling mission requirements for Slimski — it’s about resilience in the face of adversity.

“There are a lot of things that can happen throughout our lives, and you can’t really let things hold you back,” she said. “You just have to keep that mindset, no matter what happens and think, ‘I’m going to push myself to move forward. The opportunities are there. You have to go for it.”

WINTER from Page 1

shortage of excellent outdoor opportunities in Germany. You have lots of options for seeing the wintry world in a whole new way. Here is a list of six special winter outdoor activities that are perfect for winter-brightening day trips.

Strap on snowshoes.

If you’ve never been snowshoeing, you don’t know what you’re missing. Snowshoeing is awesome. When you walk across the top of the snow, rather than plunging into it, it feels like you’re flying.

As a bonus, snowshoeing is for everyone – children and first-timers included. There’s no long, painful learning curve like there is with downhill skiing or snowboarding. If you don’t have snowshoes, check with your local Outdoor Recreation about rentals. Then find a snowy patch of nearby wilderness, and get out there!

Go cross-country.

Cross-country skiing is the ultimate winter workout. It is also an incredibly beautiful way to experience the winter wilderness. Germany has a plentiful amount of terrain that is ideal for cross-country skiing, much of it located near U.S. military bases/posts. While cross-country skiing does take a bit of getting used to if you’ve never tried it, the payoff is worth it.

Put on hiking boots.

Germany is perhaps the ideal spot for winter hiking. You’ve got loads of forests and clearly marked trails. You have pines and tranquility. You have worldclass winter hiking destinations such as the Palatinate Forest, the Black Forest, the Hessen Spessart Nature Park, and more. If the snow isn’t heavy – or even with an absence of snow – hiking is an excel-

lent way to feel like you can make winter yours.

Find a snowy hill.

Sledding! If you were a veteran sledder as a child, then you know what to do. If you were raised somewhere where snow never showed, then you’re in for a treat.

Sledding is simple, and so much fun. You need a sled, a snowy hill, a modicum of common sense, and a sense of adventure. Push off, fly down the hill, and warm yourself up by hustling back up the hill. Repeat until you are the good sort of exhausted.

Plan next year’s ski/snowboard trip.

One of the best parts of Germany in winter is the ability to ski the Alps (or the Vosges, or Bulgaria, or…). Fortunately, the slopes across Europe are open this winter!

So do your research. Find that amazing ski resort in Austria, France, Slovenia, Italy, Germany, or…wherever. Join your local German ski club, which usually helps you find amazing deals and meet new people. You’ll be ready to secure the winter trip of a lifetime.

Eat warm, eat well.

Treat yourself after a long day of enjoying the winter weather. Think hot chocolate, coffee, chili, cookies, etc. Everything tastes better when you’ve earned it!

Getting out there

During the winter season, all of Germany can be your oyster when it comes to finding outdoor activities. Wherever you end up going, make sure you gear up properly (boots, coats, thermal liners, etc.), hydrate (drink loads of water, and bring more), and make sure your car has everything it needs to travel safely during winter. Then enjoy!
