THE HOUSING HYPE

ON, OFF BASE CLOTHES DRYER SAFETY

Doing laundry is most likely part of your everyday routine. But did you know how critical taking care of your clothes dryer is? With a few simple safety tips, you can help prevent dryer related issues.

There are two different types of dryers used on-base and off-base depending on your location and type of home. Condensed water and vented dryers.

» For condensed water dryers, ensure you empty the condensed water container after every drying cycle. Condensed water can cause health problems in people and animals. Please don’t drink it!!

» These dryers work more efficiently in cooler environments, so if possible, try to keep the room nice and cool by opening a window.

» For vented dryers, check and clean the flexible hose connected to your dryer for lint accumulation at least once a month.

» If you reside on-base, please reach out to maintenance to schedule your yearly ventilation duct cleaning, or request the information of when it was completed. You can reach them at 06371-463-9510.

More Safety Tips:

» Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.

» Regularly clean the lint filter.

» Never place plastic articles in the dryer.

» Clean clothes dryer lint trap after each use.

» Keep the area around your dryer clear of clutter like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc.

» Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry first; then they can be washed and dried as usual.

» Check the outdoor flap on vented dryers to ensure it is not blocked or covered.

» Turn the dryer off if you leave your home or when you go to bed.

» If you notice that it takes longer than usual for your clothes to dry, please check your lint filter first, and if this doesn’t resolve the problem, please call our Housing Maintenance Contractor at 06371-463-9510.

» If there is an issue within your off-base unit, please contact the Furnishings Management Section Appliance Repair at DSN: 489-6622/6624 or their Commercial: 0631-536-6622/6624.

FACT

The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failing to clean or maintain them properly.

Airborne Ambulance: Ramstein Aeromedical Evacuation Teams show speediest recovery in theater

One minute, you’re relaxing at Ramstein Air Base. The very next, you get the call. A U.S. service member was injured hundreds of miles away, and it’s up to you to get them to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as soon as possible for treatment.

This is the reality for members of the 76th Airlift Squadron.

“The main mission that we do here is aeromedical evacuation,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Derek Gaskins, 76 AS C-21 aircraft commander. “People get injured at U.S. military installations around Europe [all the time]. In just a few hours, we can pick them up and bring them back to Ramstein, where they can get the best care.”

On a recent training mission, Gaskins and his crew took a brief respite after a twoand-a-half hour flight to Tallinn, Estonia, where pilots checked charts and aeromedical evacuation technicians quietly discussed best practices for the upcoming simulated patient. The anticipation of the mission’s second leg hung thick in the air. The faster that an aeromedical evacuation mission is complete, the better it is for the patient.

“A lot of jets can do aeromedical evacua-

tion, but we’re the fastest,” Gaskins said. “We do a seven-day, twenty-four hour Bravo alert status, so if someone is critically injured and needs care, we can be in the air and have that patient to LRMC as soon as possible.”

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Darien Grosvenor, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron aeromedical evacuation technician, experiences the mission from a different perspective. He and his two teammates perform their duties in the main cabin of the C-21A Learjet aircraft. While the C-21 is small and nimble to allow for quick maneuverability, it also comes at the cost of a compact interior. Aeromedical evacuation technicians make the most of this space, monitoring and providing the best care to patients en route to Ramstein AB.

“The biggest part of our mission is getting people the care that they need to and from deployed locations so they can continue their mission” Grosvenor said. “Getting to fly means you have a new office every day – it’s a privilege to see the sights we do and to take care of patients.”

No matter where our people are in Europe, the 76th AS and 86th AES stand ready to lend a helping hand. With steadfast dedication and constant training, they ensure the safety of everyone in the EUCOM theater.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, City of Mannheim honor victims of 1982 Chinook Helicopter accident

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz leaders and the City of Mannheim held a wreath-laying ceremony Sep. 11 to

Mannheim.

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz leaders and the City of Mannheim held a wreath-laying ceremony Sep. 11 to honor the 46 people who died in the 1982 Chinook helicopter crash at the Neuostheim Airport near Mannheim, Germany.

Col. Jeffery Higgins, USAG RheinlandPfalz commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch represented the garrison at the remembrance ceremony alongside retired German Bundeswehr Soldiers who were on duty the day of the crash and family members of French, Italian and British servicemembers who died.

The ceremony has been held annually for more than 40 years to preserve the memories of the fallen.

In one of the deadliest military aviation accidents in Europe since the conclusion of World War II, a U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter carrying French, British, German and American servicemembers and civilians, crashed shortly after takeoff during a 375th anniversary air show near Mannheim on Sep. 11, 1982. All 46 on board died, including 23 French paratroopers, nine British soldiers, six West Germans and eight Americans. Among them were a five-mem-

ber U.S. flight crew and two American Forces Network (formerly Armed Forces Network) journalists covering the event.

Investigators later determined that a mechanical failure caused the rotor blade to separate mid-flight, sending the aircraft plummeting into an open field before it exploded.

Col. Jeffery Higgins, USAG RheinlandPfalz commander, said remembering the victims alongside German community partners and Allies underscores the value of a shared, enduring commitment to honoring the memories of those service members.

“It’s important to honor the lives that were lost on that day,” Higgins said. “This was a shared tragedy, and so we come together in unity to remember, preserving a lasting memory of our fallen comrades and safeguarding the lessons learned through this terrible event.”

Higgins said coming together as a community at ceremonies like this one reinforces relationships between U.S. forces and local communities across the garrison’s 26 geographically separated sites, where close coordination with host nation partners ensures shared strength and resilience.

Alexander Fleck, Mannheim City Councilman, spoke at the ceremony, emphasizing that the U.S. Army’s presence at the cere-

mony underscores the close bonds that have grown out of the tragedy.

“This remembrance connects us across the years with our partners and friends abroad,” Fleck said. “For the city of Mannheim, this place of remembrance reminds us of what really matters in life.

And it obliges us to continue working towards a world in which solidarity and community across borders are not excep-

tions, but the norm.”

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz advances the Department of Defense mission to achieve peace through strength as we serve, support and secure the total force community, enabling power projection for the European Theater.

AOAP Europe lab shutters doors; all special samples of oil to be mailed to US for testing

Cameron Porter 405th Army Field Support BrigadeEurope & Africa

The 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s Army Oil Analysis Program laboratory in Kaiserslautern officially shuttered its doors in accordance with an Army directive to cease operations due to funding. Consequently, all Army units in Europe will no longer be required to submit oil samples to the 405th AFSB’s AOAP lab for analysis.

Instead, the AOAP lab at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, will remain open during fiscal years 2025 and 2026 and will be available to analyze special samples for all aeronautical and non-aeronautical weapon systems. Special samples include those obtained from engines, transmissions and hydraulic systems to include grease samples, filters and debris collected on magnetic chip detectors.

Effective immediately, all special samples should be mailed to:

AOAP Laboratory, ATTN: Dr. Bradley Scates, Bldg. 3661 Ajax Road, Redstone Arsenal, AL 35898.

According to an official directive from the 405th AFSB to its four battalions, special samples may be submitted from any weapon system when unit maintainers suspect contamination or when an impending failure is suspected in engines, transmissions or hydraulic systems. In addition to grease samples, filters and debris collected on magnetic chip detectors, special

samples may also be submitted to support mishap investigations.

According to the Army directive, the AOAP Program Management Office, which falls under U.S. Army Sustainment Command, will execute the closure of all laboratories and will coordinate all actions with supporting Army Field Support Brigades to include the 405th AFSB and its AOAP laboratory.

In general, AOAP is a Department of Defense-wide initiative to assess lubricant conditions by analyzing oil samples from vehicles, aircraft, weapons systems and other equipment to better predict impending failures.

The 405th AFSB is the premier logistics integrator and synchronizer for U.S. European Command, enabling readiness solutions to ‘Support the Warrior’ by operationalizing U.S. Army Materiel Command capabilities and delivering readiness within the U.S. Army Europe and Africa areas of responsibility at the point of need.

The 405th AFSB is assigned to ASC and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging AMC’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces.

For more information on the 405th AFSB, visit the official website at www.afsbeurope.army.mil and the official Facebook site at www. facebook.com/405thAFSB.

21st TSC leaders sign proclamation to strengthen suicide prevention

Pledging year-round support for Soldiers in crisis, Maj. Gen. Michael Lalor and Command Sgt. Maj. Denice Malave signed a suicide-prevention proclamation Sep. 10, at Panzer Kaserne.

The signing launched the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s observance of Suicide Prevention Month, which highlights breaking stigma and encouraging early intervention.

The theme for the Army’s 2025 Suicide Prevention Month is “We Are Stronger Together. Connect to Protect.” According to the U.S. Army Directorate of Prevention,

Resilience, and Readiness, this theme emphasizes the importance of having a strong team, positive relationships, and connecting to create a sense of belonging, which has a significant impact on preventing suicide.

“This proclamation is a promise to every Soldier that we will stay preventive and ready to intervene,” Lalor said. “This issue isn’t limited to September; we have to fight it every day.”

The signed proclamation will serve as an external display of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command leaders’ pledge to prevent suicide within the unit.

“Everybody, depending on where they are in their life, can have challenges,” said Lalor. “All this has no privilege or rank; the background doesn’t discriminate either.

LIST YOUR UNIT IN

Everybody can go through things, and we need to be able to be on the watch and have that preventive mindset and help your brother and sister to your right and left.”

According to Lalor, suicide prevention involves all Soldiers within the unit.

“The biggest thing is knowing who you serve with and just knowing the people, you’ll know inherently when you sense some change or you need to take action,” said Lalor.

Suicide prevention is essential to the readiness of the 21st TSC. The proclamation signing event serves as a commitment to suicide prevention and making sure Soldiers know their resources and that they are not alone.

“Soldiers can reach out to their unit’s A.C.E. S.I. (Ask, Care, Escort suicide interven-

tion), those people are trained in supporting individuals who may be experiencing suicidal ideations,” said Sabrina Martinez, 21st TSC Ready and Resilient analyst. “There’s also other resources from behavioral health to the chaplain, and MFLC (Marriage, Family and Life Counseling) if they need support, there’s a lot of resources out there. There’s not one person at any of the agencies that is going to turn them away and not connect them with the help they need.”

If you or someone you know needs help, contact the military crisis line (EUCOM) +1 844-702-5495 or DSN 988 and visit https:// www.armyresilience.army.mil/suicideprevention/ for more information.

To make changes to your listing or to add your unit to The Find-it Guide, please send your contact details to info@advantipro.de or call at 06371 - 98 09 050 by October 15, 2025.

ABC IN KMC: O’zapft is!

Oktoberfest is here! The world’s largest beer festival is currently taking place in the center of Munich for the 190th time this year. The festival takes place from Sep. 20 to Oct. 5 at Theresienwiese, lovingly called “Wies’n” by locals.

Don’t miss the chance to experience this iconic festival that draws millions of visitors from around the globe. While the annual festival enjoys worldwide recognition, it is possible that many are unfamiliar with its history and how it has evolved into the celebrated event we know today. And, you may wonder why it is called Oktoberfest when it starts in September.

The festival originates from Munich with the marriage of Ludwig I, the future king of Bavaria, and Princess Therese von SachsenHildburghausen, Oct. 12, 1810, where celebrations lasted five days. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the royal wedding, participate in festivities, and watch horse races. Crown Prince Ludwigs of Bavaria came from the House of Wittelsbach, was born in Strasbourg, Alsace, but was also the Duke of Zweibrücken, under Bavarian rule at the time. He loved horses and was very proud of the “Zweibrücker” breed.

According to the city of Munich’s web-

site the celebration was so popular it was brought back the following year and included an agriculture fair. Many new additions were made in following years including horse races and food and drink vendors.

These vendors eventually moved to beer halls in the 20th century.

Today, Oktoberfest celebrations throughout the world pay homage to the Oktoberfest in Munich. The festival is traditionally a 17 to 18-day celebration, ending on the first Sunday in October. Since 1950, the mayor of Munich has kicked-off the festival by tapping a keg. What might be a surprising fact for visitors is that the large tents are completely newly constructed with fresh timber every year and the building starts in July.

Members planning to attend Oktoberfest celebrations — locally or across the country — should ensure they have a plan for transportation if drinking alcohol. Members are encouraged to use resources available like local cab companies, local tour operators, public transportation, a designated driver, and their immediate supervisor.

Oktoberfest in recent years has yielded 6.7 million visitors, including Germans and other tourists, and roughly two million gallons of beer.

Fun facts:

The festival has taken place since in Munich most years since 1810, only being

cancelled in the face of wars, cholera or COVID outbreaks.

It is forbidden to drink any beer other than Munich-brewed beer at Oktoberfest. The beer must have been brewed in the city walls and come from one of six special history breweries. This is designated “Oktoberfestbier” — and all of the breweries are very proud to be making it!

Oktoberfestbier is stronger than normal beer, at around 6 percent. The variety is called Märzen as it is brewed in March and allowed to age so that it is ready to drink by late summer.

Though Oktoberfest is world-famous, it is still predominantly attended by Bavarians. 72 percent of the guests are from Bavaria itself. The largest group of foreigners is Australians, followed by Americans.

Albert Einstein actually worked at Oktoberfest when he was young, putting up beer tents.

More than 6 million people attend Oktoberfest, and the largest tent seats 11,000 people — and that’s just one of the 13 that make up the festival.

Oktoberfest starts with a gun salute on the first Saturday at 12 p.m., followed by the mayor of Munich tapping the first beer keg, with the cry “O’zapft is’!” This literally means “it is tapped!” in the Bavarian dialect. There is also a very spectacular parade with heavy brewery horses leading to the

fairgrounds on Saturday.

The “oompah” bands at Oktoberfest are famous for their unusual regional brass instruments, including the Alpenhorn, which was traditionally used as a way to calm down anxious cows around milking times in the Swiss Alps.

The most popular things to eat at Oktoberfest are grilled chicken (“Hendl”), pork knuckles (“Schweinshaxe”), and oxen (“Ochse”). The number of chicken eaten far outweighs the number of sausages and about 500,000 chicken were consumed in 2024.

Oktoberfest is famous for its fairground. It got its first roller coaster in 1908 - the first ever roller coaster in Germany.

The amount of beer drunk at Oktoberfest, about 7 million liters in 2024, could fill more than three Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Servers at Oktoberfest are able to carry 10 Mass (liter glasses of beer) plus the additional weight of the beer itself. Pretty impressive! In addition, they are required to buy themselves in upfront with a special ticket system.

There is a “lost & found” for children! Other items found were wallets, purses, keys, train tickets, canes, underwear and even wigs and dentures!

LRC Poland leads training for Polish partners to enhance vehicle, equipment safety

Logistics Readiness Center Poland conducted vehicle and equipment ground guide and safety course training Sep. 4, 2025, focused on communicating with hand and arm signals. The course was mainly designed for the Poland Provided Logistic Support forklift operators who support LRC Poland and U.S. Army Garrison Poland, but the entire team gained from the training. Courtesy phots by U.S. Army

SWIETOSZOW MILITARY COMMUNITY, POLAND – Communication is key, maybe even more so when multiple nationalities and cultures are represented and people speak and understand more than one lan-

guage. The team at Logistics Readiness Center Poland knows this, firsthand, and they work hard to mitigate any associated challenges involved with their communication efforts.

To better communicate – and more importantly to enhance safety and mitigate risk –LRC Poland and U.S. Army Garrison Poland Safety Officer Joe Calderon conducted vehi-

cle and equipment ground guide and safety course training Sep. 4, 2025, focused on communicating with hand and arm signals.

The LRC Poland initiative came about when a communication challenge was identified by the host nation material handling equipment operators, many with limited English proficiency. Over the past nine months, three minor incidents involving the

Poland Provided Logistic Support (PPLS) forklift operators who support LRC Poland and USAG Poland resulted in property damage.

The Team from LRC Poland recognized that these incidents could have possibly been prevented if they were using trained ground guides. While the incident rate was relatively low for LRC Poland, considering the volume of support they provide across five geographically dispersed sites in Poland, LRC Poland’s goal is always zero accidents and no injuries.

Brian Waltrip is the LRC Poland site lead and liaison officer at the Swietoszow Military Community. He said to better bridge these identified language barriers, standardized ground guide safety procedures needed to be implemented across the team.

“While using ground guides are a standard practice within the Polish military when moving tanks and heavy equipment, the forklift operators in Poland aren’t always required to use them, so we collaborated with the 43rd Wojskowy Oddział Gospodarczy [Military Finance Unit] Host Nation Support Section to coordinate training for PPLS forklift operators,” Waltrip said.

George Nealy, LRC Poland’s maintenance management specialist, was tasked with developing a curriculum that incorporated classroom instruction and practical exercises based off guidelines established in TC 3-21.60. Justyna Superska and Łukasz Holynski, LRC Poland’s PPLS quality assurance representatives, assisted with class prep-

aration and translations during the training while emphasizing the connection between safety and quality assurance.

The training commenced with a welcome introduction from the LRC Poland team. They stressed that the use of ground guides is not a reflection of an operator’s knowledge and skill. Afterall, the PPLS forklift operators supporting LRC Poland and USAG Poland collectively possess more than 100 years of experience.

“Ground guides provide a critical second set of eyes, and safety, not speed, is the most important thing when operating a forklift and moving equipment,” Waltrip said, adding that the feedback LRC Poland received from participants who attended the vehicle and equipment ground guide and safety course training was positive.

“It’s like a marriage. As long as the operators and ground guides understand each other and maintain consistent communication, safe operations can be maintained,” said Sgt. Gilbert Rivera-Berrios, a motor transport operator with the 204th Transportation Company and a unit liaison with Garrison Support Element, U.S. Army Garrison Poland.

Guidance during the course from LRC Poland team members also clarified that while the hand and arm signals outlined in TC 3-21.60 serve as a foundation, modifications are acceptable as long as a clear mutual understanding is maintained, and operations cease immediately if any signals are unclear.

The next phase of the LRC Poland initiative will involve extending the training to all Garrison Support Elements and Regionally

Aligned Forces within the Swietoszow Military Community to ensure consistency, said Waltrip. This collaborative effort between the 43rd WOG, LRC Poland, and USAG Poland, he said, represents a first-of-its-kind international partnership, demonstrating a commitment to safety and fostering strong cooperation between U.S. and Polish forces.

LRC Poland is one of eight LRCs under the command and control of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade. LRCs execute installation logistics support and services to include supply, maintenance, and transportation as well as clothing issue facility operations, hazardous material management, personal property and household goods, passenger travel, non-tactical vehicle and garrison equipment management, and property book operations. When it comes to providing day-to-day installation services, LRC Poland directs, manages and coordinates a variety of operations and activities in support of USAG Poland.

LRC Poland reports to the 405th AFSB, which is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and headquartered in Kaiserslautern. The brigade provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging U.S. Army Materiel Command’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces.

For more information on the 405th AFSB, visit the official website at www.afsbeurope. army.mil and the official Facebook site at www.facebook.com/405thAFSB.

PUMPKINS from Page 1

pop to life all across the country. Coffee shops fill with pumpkin spice lattés. Kitchens everywhere give off the delicious aroma of pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread. Children and parents alike sharpen their carving knives, ready to create the best jack o’lanterns ever.

But you’re here, in Germany. So…that means no pumpkin magic, right? Wrong!

In fact, Germany does an excellent job of celebrating pumpkins, even if the tradition of eating them frequently hasn’t quite caught on. This country has some of the best – and biggest — pumpkin celebrations in the world.

And many of those celebrations are happening right about…now. So if you’re mad about pumpkins (and even if you’re not), get ready to experience how pumpkins are celebrated in Germany.

Pumpkin exhibition “Fire” at Gartenschau Kaiserslautern

From the beginning of September until Kaiserslautern’s beautiful Gartenschau closes at the end of October, visitors can experience an amazing pumpkin exhibition with over 45,000 pumpkins in multiple varieties.

Similar to past years, unique works of art have been created for this year’s pumpkin exhibition, themed “Fire.” In addition to firefish, fire salamanders, and fire jellyfish, a volcanic landscape can also be admired in pumpkin form. Younger fans are sure to enjoy “Fireman Sam,” Jim Knopf with his steam locomotive Emma (after a famous German children’s book), and Fred Flintstone.

The eight-person construction team attached each individual pumpkin to wooden and wire frames. Different kinds of pumpkins were used to give the figures their color. The color palette ranges from white over classic orange to blue pumpkins.

The exhibition takes place only in the lower part of the Gartenschau, named Neumühlepark, while the upper part on the hill called “Kaiserberg“ remains a quiet recreation area with a stunning view over Kaiserslautern. While this exhibition is perfect for all ages, dogs are not allowed.

The Great Pumpkin Fest in Ludwigsburg

Billing itself as the largest of its kind in the world, the pumpkin fest at Ludwisburg is truly awe-inspiring. The artists, organizers and gourd-philes who host the festival use nearly half a million pumpkins. Some of the pumpkin artwork is staggeringly cool. You’ll find pumpkin sculptures of animals, landscapes and pop culture figures. You’ll also find massive pumpkins: the ‘biggest pumpkin’ contest, in which gourd competitors weigh several hundred pounds or more, is incredible.

It’s not just the visuals that make the Ludwisburg Fest a great one. There, you’ll find people who also appreciate the magic that exists when it comes to cooking with and eating pumpkins. There are sweet and savory treats for every palate imaginable. This year’s exhibition will be open until Nov. 2.

And best of all, the festivities are easily accessible to all and held outside in a lovely setting. Ludwisburg is 30 minutes north of Stuttgart and just under 2 hours southeast of Kaiserslautern.

Pumpkin appreciation in the KMC

There are also options for outdoor pumpkin fun for those who live in the Kaiserslautern area. You can often find pumpkin festivals nearby that offer food, giant pumpkins, pumpkin-flavored drinks, pony rides and corn mazes.

One such place is the the Sunshine Pumpkin Farm in Gerhardsbrunn, which is 30 minutes east of the KMC. The Sunshine Pumpkin Farm will open its pumpkin fields and corn maze to visitors every weekend in October

https://www.bauernhof-guhl.de/english/sunshine-pumpkin-farm/.

Hitscherhof pumpkin farm is only a 30-minute drive from Kaiserslautern and has pumpkin related events every weekend between September 13 and October 31, including 3-course pumpkin-inspired menus that change weekly, kids entertainment, bouncy castles, a corn maze, and much more. Visit Hitscherhof’s website for a detailed list of events and dishes of the week.

Even though you may not be in the land of pumpkin love this autumn, there are still a ton of opportunities in Germany. So get out there and enjoy the season!
