TA How did you develop your ideas?
DV Nous sommes partis de deux points fondamentaux : le premier est la forme que nous avons donnée à cette extension. Il s’agit d’une forme courbe. Notre première préoccupation comme je l’ai dit précédemment, est écologique. La courbe épouse le courant marin Ligure qui circule dans cette partie de la Méditerranée. Il est nécessaire à l’oxygénation des fonds marins. Il ne faut donc pas l’entraver. D’où le choix de cette forme qui fait entrer l’extension dans la mer de façon douce sans être un obstacle. Le second point est celui du relief. Au lieu de réaliser une extension horizontale, nous avons fait le choix de mettre une colline au centre, un paysage qui donne du volume. Il s’agira d’un milieu naturel qui ne sera pas un jardin mais une pinède. Elle va se régénérer seule. Cette colline enrichit la silhouette de ce nouveau quartier. Les immeubles s’y adossent face à la mer. Ce sont ces deux points qui donnent le caractère naturel et intégré du projet.
DV We started from two fundamental points: the first is the form we have given to this extension. It is a curved shape. Our first concern, as I said earlier, is the environment. The curve follows the Ligurian marine current that flows through this part of the Mediterranean. It is necessary for the oxygenation of the seabed and should therefore not be hindered, hence the choice of this shape which allows the extension to enter the sea in a gentle way without being an obstacle. The second point is that of relief. Instead of building a horizontal extension, we chose to put a hill in the centre, creating volume. It will be a natural environment that will not be a garden but a pine forest that will regenerate itself. This hill enriches the silhouette of this new district. The buildings lean against it facing the sea. These two points give the project its natural and integrated character. TA Building at sea also means having to contend with the sea. How do you reconcile the architectural aspects with the techniques used to resist this force?
TA Construire en mer c’est aussi faire face à la mer. Comment conciliez-vous l’aspect architectural avec les techniques à mettre en oeuvre pour résister à cette force ?
DV The seafront meets the initial requirement of containing the power of the sea. As we know, swells and storms sculpt the shore and can be extremely destructive. To cope with this power, there is a device inside each caisson:
