Drama

In January Robert Lloyd Parry brings a seasonal shiver to Woodbridge with Oh Whistle... - his retelling of two of the greatest tales by M R James, the master of the English ghost story. Described by The Stage as 'story-telling at its finest' and by the Daily Mail as 'wonderful, magical', Lloyd Parry of Nunkie Theatre Company has spear-headed The M R James Project, an initiative to bring back to life the most entertaining of James's enduringly brilliant tales. On Monday 27 January he will perform Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You My Lad and The Ash Tree. One review described his performance as 'utterly hypnotic'. M R James was an author, medieval scholar and Fellow of King's College Cambridge. Many of his stories were written to be performed by candlelight to his friends in his college rooms on Christmas Eve. His Ghost Stories of an Antiquary remain the most admired supernatural tales in the English language. Oh Whistle... is a tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast and is considered by many to be James's masterpiece. The Ash Tree is a story of witchcraft and vengeance down the generations. The performance on 27th January begins at 7.30pm in Woodbridge Library. Tickets are £10 (students £5) including an interval drink and are available from the Library or by phoning 01394 330855.

Be Green

More than 1.2 billion metres (or 745,000 miles) of clingfilm is used by households across the UK each year – enough to go around the world 30 times! There are now so many great alternatives to single use plastic, so there’s no excuse to continue buying zip-lock bags, cling film, and plastic bags. Being plastic-free can be stylish, practical and good for the planet. Organically produced from Australian beeswax - Bee Green Wraps are produced on an organic small-holding near Sydney from organic Australian beeswax, then imported slowly by boat to keep carbon footprint at a minimum. Not only practical for reducing clingfilm and foil consumption, Bee Green Wraps have stylish limited edition prints, also making them the perfect gift or stocking filler. Unlike other brands, Bee Green Wraps use dammar oil rather than pine resin, making them more durable and avoiding the wax ‘bobbling’ found on other beeswax wraps after washing. Simple and easy to use, if properly cared for each wrap should last around year – and when they run out of life, simply bury them in your garden to compost! Bee Green Wrap collections range from £4.99 to £25.49 available at beegreenwraps. co.uk

Haughgate House was converted in to a nursing home in the 1980’s and has recently undergone a major refurbishment. This has provided a new range of facilities in keeping with the 1920’s home, whilst providing modern and comfortable rooms for residents and staff. Haughgate House Care Home celebrates Centenary Year As we enter a brand new decade, a Woodbridge care home is about to mark its 100th anniversary with a host of events, open days and a special history project. Haughgate House Nursing Home, which is located on Haugh Lane, was originally built in the 1920s for the Cobbold brewing family. Today, Haughgate House provides care and support for up to 42 people, who have a range of health needs. To kick-start its anniversary celebrations, the residents and staff are taking a step back in time to try and create a timeline of the home’s history. The team is calling on people from across the local area, including any historians from Woodbridge, to get in contact to help everyone delve into the home’s past. Home Manager Judith Morgan-Worrall said, “The home was built 100 years ago and we decided to try and create a history board that residents and visitors can see, so everyone can learn more about the home, it’s history, who has lived here and anecdotes of its past.

“We want to fill in a timeline from the 1920s to today and paint a picture of our home’s history. If anyone is able to share any details, we would be most grateful to receive them, whether over the phone, by email, post or visitors are welcome to call in at any time.” Only last year, Haughgate House was the subject of a recent £1.5m extension programme. This saw the addition of 12 new bedrooms, a new kitchen, laundry and staff room facilities, as well as two new communal day rooms to be enjoyed by residents. The finished extension was officially opened by Major Philip Hope-Cobbold, a descendant of the Ipswich-based Cobbold brewing family. Weddings

After the Vows:

A Wedding Reception Checklist & Information A wedding reception checklist is an ideal organising tool to ensure everything gets done before your ceremony. With a wedding reception checklist, you can check off everything from wedding reception table decorations to the wedding reception rentals as you accomplish them. While a wedding reception schedule does not need to be strictly planned out, having an order of events that flows smoothly will keep your guests sticking around. Besides the time for open dancing, the only break in activities should be between the toast and the cake-cutting, to allow time for eating. After the meal, your wedding reception schedule should move along quickly so the people who have attended your reception can enjoy all of the festivities, including: the cake cutting ceremony, the garter removal, and everything else that is typical of a wedding reception. With your wedding reception checklist, you can organise your wedding reception and equipment. First and foremost, the reception hall is the most important of decision - unless you have made other venue arrangements. Wherever you decide to hold your reception, tables and chairs might be another concern on your list of wedding

10

reception essentials. If you are looking for a more sophisticated touch, you can also get linens and seat covers for added accents and styles. Other wedding reception items include a variety of decorations, such as: a decorative arch, a stage and a backdrop behind the head table. In some cases, you may want to hire table decorations for the reception tables. Since your wedding reception table decorations will be a focal point for the guests at each table, you'll want to have an impressive conversation piece to get people talking. Creative and unique centerpieces can be an expensive addition to your wedding budget, so hiring can be an affordable way to give your reception an added appearance that you spared no expense -- even though you may, in fact, be saving money. Receptions can be fun and exciting, but they can also be a lot of work for the soon-to-bemarried couple. To help you get organised, a wedding reception checklist can help you feel less overwhelmed by the tasks involved. From discos to table decorations, a wedding reception checklist is a vital tool when planning your reception. With the popularity of wedding websites and wedding planning books, you can find help to accomplish all your important tasks.

Wedding Planning Planning a wedding is more labour-intensive than ever, according to a study. A survey of 2,000 married Brits found two in five think the process of bringing the elements of a wedding together is now more time-consuming than it would have been 20 years ago. And 39 per cent said organising their wedding felt like taking on a second job.

A spokesperson for Virgin Holidays, which commissioned the study, added, “Pulling all the threads of a wedding together can feel like an impossible task, and it’s no wonder brides- and grooms-to be to feel daunted by the prospect.''

It also emerged the average couple will dedicate more than nine hours to the laborious task of whittling down the guest list.

When asked to think about the aspects of the wedding they started to worry about earliest in the process, most married Brits tackled securing the venue first.

Six hours will be dedicated to picking the perfect flower arrangement for the venue, and 11 hours will be spent traipsing from bridal shop to bridal shop to try on dresses. And a further eight hours will be spent researching and speaking to caterers who might be suitable for the big day, and nine hours deciding where to go for the honeymoon.

The wedding dress, the rings and sending out the invites were also key priorities which married Brits tried to sort sharpish. Arranging the party favours, hair and make-up and decorations were the tasks most likely to be left until the last minute. Finalising the guest list was considered the most stressful aspect of the process followed by finding the perfect wedding dress and organising the catering. And 88 per cent said

13

they took an active role in organising their wedding. The average couple start making arrangements nearly nine months before they take those fateful steps down the aisle, the OnePoll study found. Though one in five wish they had more time to get their big day absolutely right. Yvonne Bakouris, who has been a wedding planner at Virgin Holidays for 20 years, said, “Pinterest and Instagram have changed the wedding planning process immensely – and made destination weddings seem much more appealing for the average person. “Twenty years ago having a destination wedding was fairly unusual, but now 14 per cent of British weddings are held abroad. “That is both a blessing and a curse for us in the industry – people are going onto these sites and social media looking for ideas for weddings, and seeing larger, bolder, more challenging events. “The challenge is ensuring you find a wedding that’s right for you. ''Not everyone wants the perfect fairytale wedding at Walt Disney World where budget is no barrier – most are happy with an intimate affair at a local wedding spot.” The Virgin Holidays spokesperson added, ''While it’s unsurprising to hear the majority of couples wade in with the arrangements, hiring a third party can be a simple way to keep those doubts and worries in check throughout the process.”

Dress Perfection

In order to have a perfect wedding, it is important to have that perfect wedding dress, too as the gown is the showpiece of any wedding. The wedding gown is not just a mere dress that is worn by the bride. It is the substantial emblem of purity, love, and happiness that awaits the bride in her future with her groom. That is why finding the right wedding dress is as important as preparing the wedding celebration itself. Therefore, for people who do not know how to choose the perfect wedding gown, here are some pointers that could help you out. — continues over —

Dress Perfection — continued from previous page —

1. Use all the resources available in choosing ideas and design on your wedding gown. Before, wedding magazines were the only resources where the bride to be could get some useful ideas on her wedding wear. However, with the advent of the internet, she can now browse for more ideas and concepts of wedding gowns online. There are websites that will provide you with full details regarding a particular wedding dress, complete with prices, different styles, and fashion sense, although it is always a good idea to visit a good bridal shop to buy your dress, where you can try on your chosen gown. 2. Make a budget and strictly conform to it. Budget will never be absent in any wedding plans. However, the most common problem that arises concerning budgeting is the fact that people do not stick to it. Hence, if you have a budget for your wedding wear, it would be better to stick to it and not be enticed with all the promotions of whoever will make your wedding gown. Otherwise, you will fall short on the other aspects of your wedding plans. 3. Be sure to have your wedding gown looking good in all angles. Usually, the most neglected part of the wedding dress is the back. So, when ordering one, be sure that you will also look good from the back. Most of the time, during the wedding ceremony the guests at your wedding will be looking at you from behind. 4. Be practical with the designs that you want to use. Like any traditional wedding gowns, large skirts and long gowns are the typical styles of yesteryears. But in the modern world of today, there are cases wherein wedding dresses like these are not at all practical especially if the venue is small. Moreover, it can be burdensome for the bride to carry such a heavy dress throughout the wedding celebration. What matters most is to make sure the bride comfortable to what she is wearing.

18

5. Take into account the environmental condition of the venue of the wedding. When choosing wedding wear, it is best to consider the weather and the venue. This will have a great effect on the kind of material that should be worn by the bride. For example, if the wedding will take place during summer, then, it is best to choose the materials for the wedding gown that will not make the bride sweat and perspire throughout the celebration. Indeed, deliberating on the details of the wedding gown can be a daunting task. That is why it is important to provide a hefty amount of time in preparing, designing, and ordering the wedding gown. In this manner, there will be plenty of time for any changes and modifications without the tendency to come up with a rushed work. More importantly, the bride should always consider her comfort when choosing a wedding gown. Looks and designs will only be put to waste if the bride is not comfortable wearing her dress. As the old cliche goes, you are what you wear. Therefore, it would be better to wear a wedding dress that would reflect the happiness and love that is within the bride. In turn, the wedding gown will appear before the audience as the most beautiful centrepiece of the ceremony.

Every year, millions of people around the world stay up late on December 31st to usher in the new year. The New Year is a great time for reflection on the past year and what improvements you can strive for in the coming months. Resolutions are made around the globe, and then promptly broken. Though by the end of January most resolutions are forgotten, it doesn't have to be this way. One of the biggest reasons for these dropped resolutions is lack of a plan. Here are some tips to help you keep your New Year's resolutions.

more pounds a week. Giving yourself realistic expectations increases the likelihood that you'll complete your goals.

- Make is specific. A popular resolution is to lose weight. Does it get more vague? This doesn't really give you something specific to aim for; try to pinpoint exactly what it is you want to do. If you start with lose weight, a more focused goal could be to lose 25 pounds by your birthday in July. Or to fit back into your pre-pregnancy jeans by the time your baby is a year old. Lose weight can also translate into a goal to eat healthier or exercise more, two other resolutions that may also need narrowing down. The point is, having a specific aim to reach by a certain time is more likely to be attained than a general wish.

- Make it fun. Who wants to keep a resolution that drains the life out of you? No one we know. So do something to add fun to your goal. Dancing burns a lot of calories just as well as running on a treadmill and yet is much more fun. Nowadays there are multiple video game systems that offer fitness programs you can complete without ever leaving your home. Along with keeping things fun, allow yourself room for error. Rigid plans aren't any fun either. So go ahead, have that piece of chocolate cake at your friend's birthday party. Just don't go overboard and don't do it every day.

- Make it realistic. Lofty goals are fine but moving to the moon might be a little out of reach. Unachievable plans are soon left by the wayside as the New Year's Eve high wears off and real life sets in. To stay with our lose weight example, make a goal to lose weight healthily, one to two pounds a week. This is not only doable, it's much healthier for your body than crash dieting to lose five or

- Make a plan. Without a plan, great ideas never get finished. Set aside some time to figure out what it is you need to do to accomplish your goals. Maybe you need to go for a walk every afternoon or join a gym. Or maybe you need to cut back to one soda a day and one dessert a week. Whatever your plan of action is, having one- and sticking to it- will be a great help on your journey.

These guidelines are here to help you keep your resolutions but the real work is up to you. Nail down a concrete , achievable goal for yourself and figure out how to get there. But don't forget to have a little fun on the way. Good luck and happy New Year! Jeff McRitchie

Suffolk hotel shapes up with Gym make-over A Woodbridge-based hotel has given its gym a new look as part of its continuing programme of refurbishment. Ufford Park Woodbridge Hotel, Golf and Spa has given its 40 station air conditioned gym and pool area a makeover in keeping with the ‘look and feel’ of improvements in other areas of the hotel. As well as benefiting from a new look, the Ufford Park gym is also delighted to welcome new health club manager Hattie Clarke. Hattie has been a member of the Ufford Park family for four years and has recently been

promoted to health club manager. With an established health and fitness background, Hattie was a qualified personal trainer by the age of 18. A former competitive swimmer, Hattie comes from a sporting family – her mother was a gymnast and her father is a former GB Duathlete. Commenting on the gym refurbishment Ufford Park’s general manager for spa and health club, Simon Thadani said, “The recent updates to the gym form part of our ongoing programme of refurbishment.

“We are so pleased with the changes; the gym is now a more stylish and inspiring work out space which we will continue to upgrade over the coming months.” On Hattie’s promotion Simon said, “Hattie is a much valued member of the Ufford Park team and was the natural fit for health club manager. Her enthusiasm and can do attitude are infectious and is loved by both staff and members.” Hattie added, “I am delighted to have been promoted to gym manager. Overseeing the refurbishment was the first challenge of my role and I loved every minute of it! “We are all so pleased with how it looks and are looking forward to making future upgrades to the suite of equipment. “I am excited about what the future holds for the fitness team and am already getting stuck in and making the role my own.” The fully air-conditioned gym offers a range of cardiovascular equipment from bikes, treadmills, rowers and elliptical X trainers. As part of the refurbishment five new state of the art cross trainers with personal viewing screens (PVS) and a new half squat machine have been added. And personal viewing screens have been added to the existing treadmills. The gym, dance studio and corridor areas now have a new stylish grey colour scheme and new flooring. The dry ladies changing rooms and poolside areas have also had a mini refurbishment. The Ufford Park health club offers a full range of fitness classes for all ages and fitness levels.

After Christmas, it’s time to look after ‘you’ Although Christmas is a holiday, many people actually feel exhausted afterwards. Many feel the need to recover from Christmas and have a little rest, but that’s rarely possible if you’ve decided that your New Year’s resolution has to start on the first of January! This is a lot of pressure you put on yourself – to suddenly stop eating all the festive treats and winter comfort foods, to give up alcohol, to be more organised, or to go to the gym. But maybe after all the fun, time off and indulgence, this is the time to introduce some self-discipline to achieve those enviable goals. The main trick is to make your goals achievable, rather than so insurmountable that you set yourself up to fail and inevitably feel guilty. Andrew Gilmour & Associates in Melton, near Woodbridge, see many patients at this time of year who have had a physical and emotional lead up to the festive season and are still under stress after this apparent ‘holiday’. Shopping, finalising work, family politics and the sheer number of tasks to be achieved can all take their toll. “We see people who come to us with aches and pains and also report a host of peripheral symptoms such as headaches, breathing changes, poor sleep patterns, lethargy, irritability and digestive problems”, says Andrew Gilmour. “They don’t realise that these symptoms are can very often be associated with stress, but recognition can often be the key to release.” Getting over Christmas is tough! It’s worth looking back at your own lead up to Christmas to see what stresses you went through – the shopping, family pressures, completing

work commitments, fitting in visits to friends and relatives, and worries about the cost of it all, can literally be a pain in the neck. “Psychological stress can exacerbate underlying weaknesses in the body’s framework and lead to muscle pain in the neck, shoulders and back”, says Andrew, adding that, “stress can also magnify existing problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, asthma, arthritis and hypertension”. Stress starts at the basic instinctual level with the ‘fight or flight’ response. Our bodies are geared to dealing with the everyday stresses of living, but if stress is extreme, unusual or long-lasting, the body’s normal mechanisms may not cope and blood pressure and glucose levels rise in preparation for ‘fight or flight’. You might have bottled this all up over Christmas and be holding in the tension, so health problems can often follow. New Year resolutions do NOT HAVE to start on New Year’s Day. The first priority of the New Year should be you. If you are not 100 per cent, you are unlikely to fulfil the challenges you set yourself. If you are stressed at work or in the home, it will be harder to commit to your resolution. The New Year is a time for checking yourself over: Find personal time to relax in your day. Listen to music, read a book or watch something funny on television. Unwind. Walk. This is an excellent way to relieve physical and emotional strain. Fresh air works wonders and a recent study demonstrated that walking 20 minutes per day is the single and most helpful activity for overall fitness and longevity.

Pictured left: Associate Osteopath Katy Stone with Andrew Gilmour

Write things down. List the pros and cons to help clarify an issue. Don’t let it go round and round in your mind. Enlist support. When you are feeling ready for your New Year challenge – and it might be March before you are ready – enlist the support of friends and family. They can help you achieve your target - exercise with you, refrain from offering you that drink, or slice of birthday cake at work. Feeling guilty about not achieving your targets will only create more psychological stress. “Most of us know how much better we’d feel if we could stick to our New Year’s Resolutions” says Andrew, “especially as they tend to involve eating and drinking less and doing more exercise. Stress levels and physical tension in the body will then subside too, but it’s all about the getting the right balance at the end of the day. “Don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back each time you make a step towards the goal you’ve set. Good luck and Happy New Year.” Pictured right: Felix Cory-Wright, osteopath, at the Melton practice

Grow yourself healthy Research from around the world has confirmed something many gardeners already know – gardening really is good for you!

Both gardens and gardening bring benefits to our physical and mental health, from providing exercise and keeping us active and fit, to getting us outside and connecting with plants, soil, and the natural world around us. Gardens are great places to relax, and just being in or looking out onto gardens and green spaces has been shown to relieve stress, improving wellbeing and creativity. By creating a beautiful garden outside your own back door you’ll have a personal sanctuary to step out into, and somewhere to grow healthy food, welcome in wildlife, and spend time with family and friends. Gardening is a creative, rewarding and productive pastime, with opportunities to learn new skills, find out about exciting new plants, share ideas and make new friends. All these have a positive and restorative affect on mental and physical health, keeping mind and body active, whatever your age. 35

In fact, gardening could be described as the Natural Health Service, as doctors recognise the numerous benefits gardening brings without the need for costly therapies and drugs, with their unwelcome side effects. For instance, eating well can start by growing your own organic homegrown crops – all part of the ‘5 a day’ we all need to provide nutrients, health-boosting vitamins and minerals, and essential phytochemicals that help protect our bodies against disease. Herbs not only add wonderful flavours to our home cooking and teas, but bring many health benefits too. Crops can be grown in even the smallest of spaces, providing the reward of picking fresh produce you’ve raised yourself. Combine these with colourful plants and fragrant flowers and any outdoor space will be transformed, giving you somewhere relaxing to sit or a vibrant space to socialise and entertain with family and friends. PLANTS OF THE MOMENT: YEARROUND COLOUR & INTEREST By creating a garden that looks great allyear-round you’ll not only have a beautiful outlook but more opportunities to be tempted outside throughout the year to stay active and grow yourself healthy. To give your garden structure and form choose plants that offer more than one season of interest. In particular, pick evergreen plants and architectural shrubs with green, coloured or variegated foliage that also produce seasonal flowers, and perhaps fruits or berries too. Plant these to form the backbone to your garden, giving it structure, and adding height at the back of borders. Use their bold shapes and sizes to obscure eyesores and cover boring fences, cut down noise from roads and neighbours, and create a sense of privacy and seclusion.

Suffolk travel company plants trees at Royal Hospital School Woodbridge-based Deben Travel have planted trees at Suffolk’s Royal Hospital School (RHS) as part of the Woodland Trust’s Big Climate Fight Back. Deben Travel approached RHS after reading about the school’s Grow with Us scheme which includes planting a tree for every child who joins. The travel company have long been aware of the contribution that the travel industry makes to greenhouse gases and has wanted to plant trees to contribute some offset its carbon footprint but didn’t know how to move this forward. They’ve donated over 700 young trees - a mix of native species – which will be planted over the coming winter months, beginning this Saturday. Director of Deben Travel, Lee Hunt, explains a little more about their Involvement, “Deben Travel are delighted to be part of the Royal Hospital School and Woodland Trust's Big Climate Fight Back. On behalf of our team and customers, the planting of over 700 trees represents the number of longhaul flights we've organised this year and we hope our actions further raise awareness of the importance of offsetting carbon emissions”.

The planting will be carried out by the RHS pupil Eco Committee who have been responsible for a range of initiatives at the school including the replacement of single-use plastic water bottles. Commenting on the initiative, RHS headmaster, Simon Lockyer, said, “Our commitment to our pupils and our community come together in our Grow with Us scheme.

We are delighted to partner with businesses who are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint by offering space to plant trees within our grounds. Our extensive woodland management programme includes rewilding, the introduction of bees and traditional hedge-laying means that we can ensure the sustainability of these trees in the years to come”.

Run Fast, Eat Slow Shalane Flanagan & Elyse Kopecky A 52-week meal planner and journal for athletes with new recipes to inspire you to cook more, create nutrition-packed meal plans, and keep track of your progress With their two hit cookbooks, Run Fast. Eat Slow. and Run Fast. Cook Fast. On the Road James Naughtie The acclaimed author and BBC broadcaster, now brings his unique and inquisitive eye to the country that has fascinated him and drawn him across the Atlantic for half a century. He tells the story of a country that is grappling with a dream. What has it come to mean in the new century, and who do Americans now think they are? Drawing on his travels and encounters over forty years in the ‘Land of the Free’, On The Road will be filled with anecdotes, memories, reflecting Naughtie’s characteristic warmth and enthusiasm in encountering the America of Washington, of Broadway, of the small town and the plains.

The Other Side of the Coin Angela Kelly Angela has worked with The Queen and walked the corridors of the Royal Household for twentyfive years, initially as Her Majesty's Senior Dresser and then latterly as Her Majesty's Personal Advisor, Curator, Wardrobe and Inhouse Designer. The Queen has personally given Angela her blessing to share their extraordinary bond with the world. Whether it's preparing for a formal occasion or brightening Her Majesty's day with a playful joke, Angela's priority is to serve and support. This revealing book provides memorable insights into what it's like to work closely with The Queen.

How to Grow Old John Bishop Intimate confessions and spit-yourdentures-out hilarious commentary - this is observational comedy at its best. How to Grow Old is a stupid title, because the answer is obvious: Don't Die. Provided you don't die, you are growing old. It isn't going to tell you how to stay alive any longer. However, if you happen to want to know what a white, heterosexual, middle-aged man thinks of getting old - from the struggle to stay fit, keep hold of your friends or stay relevant, to why I'm better at doing a dump now than at any time in my life - this book could very well be exactly what you have been looking for. You might even find it a bit funny.
