There are fewer locations open than in the past as some owners are still understandably wary of Covid. The Ipswich Society is grateful to all concerned for their participation. You won’t go hungry; several buildings have refreshments on offer. In addition, there are independent cafes all around the town centre, well worth a visit or you could pack a picnic and make a day of it in one of our beautiful Green Flag parks. The free Heritage Open Days colour booklet will be available at the Suffolk Building Society in Princes Street, the Ipswich Library in Northgate Street, the Ipswich Institute on Tavern Street, Ipswich Town Hall and other venues around the town and beyond. Heritage Open Days take place on the 10th & 11th September Firewalk!

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is reminding gardeners to only buy online plants and seeds from reputable British garden centres or nurseries to minimise the risk of introducing new pests and diseases. The number of UK gardeners has swollen by three million over the last year to 30 million. The charity believes that this new demand coupled with the popularity of online plant sales could see people unwittingly taking risks with their web purchases, introducing new plant health issues. Pests and diseases imported from abroad have the potential to spread widely, causing damage to gardens, crops and landscapes. One such example is ash dieback, a disease which is predicted to kill around 80% of the UK’s ash trees at a cost of £15 billion. Plants and seeds for sale from reputable British companies may have originated from overseas but will have been imported following the government’s strict plant health regulations meaning the risk of inadvertently introducing new pests and diseases is significantly reduced, so too the risk of them containing invasive or banned plant material.

The pathogen originates from Central America and was introduced into Europe in 2013 where it has caused severe losses in Italian and Spanish olive and almond groves. 3. Don’t plant up seeds or other material that arrived unsolicited via the post, even as a gift, unless you are sure that it is from a reputable British supplier or you know the origin.

Local author writes Titanic novel inspiredby local survivor

21

Although Violet died two years before Elspeth was born, her memoir came out at the time of the Cameron movie. Elspeth would pass by the private cottage, which was the childhood home of her great grandfather, on her bike to help her focus on her tale, which had a long gestation. This Titanic story is different because it is a microcosmic view – a personal claim, and it is about coming to terms with the losses of the sinking. The story doesn’t end with the ship going down: it’s in the middle. The second half is cases of a personal jury in a court which the narrator both controls and herself is tried by. It is a story ofpersonal and spiritual development. Elspeth not only designed the cover and typeset it, but she created artwork and even the musical theme for the play, which she wants to put on next year for the 111th anniversary.

The novel can be purchased via Blurb in various www.blurb.co.uk/b/11113693-the-jury-in-my-mind-colourformats,

Elspeth Rushbrook is East Anglian born and bred, where she has spent much of her adult life, but it is her native Suffolk that helped keep her in the zone as she penned a novella/play about the ship which she became interested in over 25 years ago. She has seen all of the films, she thinks, but although it was A Night To Remember which first set off a Titanic interest, it was the Cameron movie of 97, which she calls Blockbuster”Leviathan“Thewhich began the seeds of her writing her own story - and it was an inverse inspiration, because initially, she hated it and felt that there were other stories to tell. It was Violet Jessop, the stewardess who survived disasters on all three sister ships, who retired to Great Ashfield, who helped focus Elspeth as she wrote.

A plate which is so good that it features on both the lunch and dinner menu, is Sci’s speciality burger ‘The Royale with Cheese’. Stacked inside

Born and bred in Suffolk, Sci was introduced to the industry by his father and has been head chef at many local award-winning restaurants, one of which boasts four stars and AA two rosettes. He now brings his experience, creativity and love for food to The Crown at Woodbridge, who launched their new menu last week. There are plenty of signature dishes to enjoy and all come with a photo-ready finish. Bringing the fun back into food, the menu has an array of tongue-in-cheek names, as well as dedicating some dishes to local dignitaries and the Themonarchy.stardish for breakfast, ‘Eggs Seckford’, is a nod to Woodbridge benefactor Thomas Seckford and includes sourdough toast topped with house cured salmon, spinach, poached eggs, mousseline sauce and bourbon cured bacon.

A MasterChef finalist and TV food expert, now based in Woodbridge, has led the launch of a brand-new menu, appealing to both taste buds and eyes Scialike.Daniels, newly-appointed Head Chef at The Crown at Woodbridge, has 30 years’ experience in the industry and made TV appearances during that time as a finalist in series nine of MasterChef, as well as a meat expert on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast.

The launch of the new menus has allowed Sci to bring together his work and charitable endeavours. During lockdown Sci supported The Teapot Project by cooking meals with unsold supermarket and farm food, which was then offered to people on a ‘pay as you feel basis’. This not only prevented food from going to waste, but also provided food for those who were struggling to buy food for their families.

To prove that the food tastes as good as it looks, The Crown at Woodbridge has created a YouTube playlist of some of its featured dishes to show them in action, www.youtube.com/ Toplaylist?list=PLVvw7xfDXwF7sFOUFEx2_EtHxQ2dqCARgviewthenewmenus,visitTheCrown’swebsiteatwww.thecrownatwoodbridge.co.uk/dine.

“The best day of my life was when my daughter said to me that she would like to become a chef. So, if I can inspire others to also get into the industry, that would be amazing.”

“I have no doubt that this is the first of many menus that Sci will create to inspire and excite guests. We’re absolutely dedicated to ensuring that The Crown at Woodbridge is a place that is front of mind when deciding where to dine, and I am convinced that the quality of food on these menus will do just that.”

David Scott, Chief Executive Officer for The Hotel Folk Group, owners of The Crown at Woodbridge said, “The new menus take the high quality, fun atmosphere and fantastic customer service The Crown at Woodbridge is known for, and pushes it up to another level.

the charcoal brioche, you will find a beef, bone marrow and truffle patty, red onion chutney and a generous slice of tomato, all topped with cheese and truffle mayonnaise. This is served with The Crown’s ‘roast dinner’ salt and sustainable chips sourced through The Teapot Project, a local initiative which helps reduce food waste.

Now, as an ambassador of the project, The Crown will donate 50p for every portion of sustainable chips sold as a side or bar snack, to The Teapot CommentingProject.onhis ambitions for the future, Sci said, “To teach and inspire more people, give back and build on my charitable work.
