Briarbank’s Amateur Brewers Festival Your chance to meet, ask and try If you’re a fan of locally produced beer, you should head down to Ipswich for the Briarbank’s Amateur Brewers Festival on Saturday, 30 July. Preparations are well underway, and it’s looking to be a great day, especially for those interested in the art of brewing. The festival gives local brewers the chance to showcase their beers to a wider audience and gives anyone interested in brewing the opportunity to talk all things beer. There will be 15 beers available across cask and keg, available to try in thirds, and a whole host of activities, including tutored tasting sessions and a BBQ if the weather is onside. The Briarbank’s head brewer will also be there, so it’s a perfect opportunity to ask him any top brewing tips. Tickets are available to purchase via the Briarbank’s website and cost just £12 per person. It’s not just the Amateur Brewers Festival that will be taking place. The Briarbank will also be announcing the winner of their homebrew competition, a competition which has been going strong over the past six years and gives homebrewers across the region the opportunity to showcase their best brew for a chance to win the ultimate prize, brewing their beer at the Briarbank, and seeing it sold behind the Briarbank’s first-floor bar. The competition is judged by local industry experts and is open to all types of homebrewers, from kits to all-grain. It’s free to enter, and with ten categories to choose from, there are plenty of opportunities for homebrewers across the region to get involved. Once a homebrewer

himself, the competition is born through the passion the Briarbank’s head brewer Robert Lewis-Pyke has for brewing great beer, and over the years, they’ve seen some fantastic beers win. Their first winner was a dark roasty, full-bodied porter, and more recently, Water, Seeds, Flowers and Fungus, an American Pale Ale with a hoppy citrus flavour and crisp bitter finish, won in 2020. These, along with the other winners, have all been well received in the Briarbank Bar. For anyone wanting to learn more about the Briarbank’s brewing process, they also offer tours of their microbrewery. Not only will you get to have a look around, but you’ll also have the opportunity to ask their head brewer any brewing questions.

Every Dog has it’s Day Suffolk Dog Day, sponsored by Skinner’s and Pound Gates, makes a return to Helmingham Hall on Sunday 31st July, with one clear message - to help Suffolk reset, recover and recharge post pandemic – on two legs and four! There will be nationwide celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and together, across this wonderful County, we are making 2022 a year of celebration for us all - this is a year that sets the vision for the future of Suffolk. Suffolk Dog Day is extremely proud to be part of a series of events across the summer, that will make up the Festival of Suffolk. There is much talk of hope and excitement as our summer diaries begin to fill with plansa-plenty, making it a truly PAWSITIVE year to remember! Tim Holder, Head of Public Affairs at Suffolk Community Foundation says, ‘’Suffolk Community Foundation could not be more thrilled to bring Suffolk Dog Day back to the magnificent and historic surroundings of Helmingham Hall, as part of HM Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. It has been a long wait for Suffolk Dog Day lovers to see this incredibly well-loved event back up and running. We promise a really uplifting, confidence boosting ‘right royal’ celebration. There will be everything you could want from the day – from a Royal Fancy Dress Procession and Breed Parades (where the Corgi will lead the way!) to dynamic dog displays, have-a-go-activities, demonstrations and brilliant advice from our friendly canine experts.”

With every penny raised having always been donated to support the work of Suffolk charities and community groups, the County’s largest date

in the canine calendar has already raised almost £600K and supported over 250 projects across every corner of Suffolk. The original idea for Suffolk Dog Day work came about over a decade ago when a group of friends wanted to raise money to support the work of Suffolk Community Foundation. Tickets are available on the day priced at £10 for adults and £5 for children with a family ticket for a very reasonable £25.

BBQs are not just meals that you prepare outdoors; they are indeed social events, and ones that you need to be properly prepared for. Long gone are the days where a barbeque was just about lumps of meat being singed, these days BBQs are sophisticated events. For this reason, you need to know not only what the best techniques are for cooking food on a barbeque so that it is succulent and tasty; you need to be prepared to cater for all types of diets. Kids especially are renowned for being fussy eaters and vegetarians can also be tricky to please at a barbeque event.

The traditional barbeque gives you images of fat and juicy steaks as well as quarter or half pound burgers, but you need to think of your cholesterol level here too and offer some healthy alternatives and side dishes as an accompaniment to your BBQ. Especially when there are kids invited to your meal, or simply if you are cooking some food for your family on the barbeque as it is nice weather, you need to take their diets into consideration too. Kids shouldn’t eat large amounts of red meat, so you need to think of what else to cook. Favourite foods for BBQs are ribs, chicken pieces, steaks, burgers, sausages and stick kebabs, with of course some jacket potatoes cooked in wrapped foil. A word of warning here needs to go out to how you cook the food too; especially the chicken is a dangerous topic. When people hold barbeques the spirits are high and food often gets left out in the sun. The best way to avoid upset stomachs or worse still is by pre cooking the large and thick meats such as the chicken pieces, and then just placing them on the BBQ to finish them off. This way you will be able to get the great taste of the barbeque but you will be sure that the meat is properly cooked all the way through to the bone.

10

BBQ

rocks

So, on to vegetarian, fussy eaters, those on a diet, and kids; kids will be happy with chipolata sausages and burger with lashings of ketchup. But if you don’t want to risk giving meat to the kids that is out in the sun, then you can make up some great tasting spicy bean burgers or tofu sausages. These can be cooked next to the meats with no extra bother and it will keep vegetarians happy at your gathering. For those on a diet, you can try using stick kebabs that have large chunks of veg in them, or even make purely vegetable sticks with traffic light peppers; these tastes delicious when they are barbequed too. Lastly, think about what else you can serve to eat. Just because you are holding a BBQ, it doesn’t mean that absolutely everything you cook as to be done on the BBQ. Try serving some lovely side salads, crisps and dip, and of course a variety of sauces to accompany the meats. Bread is always a great filler at these meals and you don’t just have to serve plain bread. You can really show off to your guests by serving some “pan con tomate” This is a Spanish staple food and consists of toasted farmhouse bread with lashings of fresh ripe tomato pulp, olive oil and fresh garlic rubbed gently across the bread; absolutely divine and a guaranteed hit with all your diners. Charity golf event

n Colin Aldous, Amy Cassidy from Suffolk Punch Trust and Fiona Fleming from the Suffolk Horse Society.

On Spring Bank Holiday, Thursday 2nd June, Ufford Park Woodbridge hosted the second ‘Suffolk Punch Trophy’ golf competition to help raise funds for the Suffolk Punch horse, following last year’s success. The event, founded by owner and keen golfer, Colin Aldous, attracted elite golfers from across Suffolk to play two rounds at the award-winning 18-hole, par 71 course, nestled in the Suffolk countryside. Ufford Park has previously hosted various prestigious golf tournaments including, The Rett Classic, Best Western National Seniors and Sky Televised Euro Pro Tour. Colin said, “Back in 2019, we felt the time was right to introduce a new annual golf competition, and after significant research and consideration, we decided on a Regional Annual Order of Merit event, which could support an appropriate charity. Unfortunately, COVID delayed our plans for the event, but we were finally able to hold the first Suffolk Punch Trophy event back in May 2021.

“We’ve managed to increase sponsorship for 2022 from eight local companies; AllGlass (Anglia) Ltd, Amarinth Ltd, Booth Tarmacadam Ltd, Hopkins Homes, Foskett Farms, GAH Refridgeration, The Burgess Group and T Humphreys Removals; all of which have strong connections with the village of Ufford and we are very grateful that the majority of generous sponsors have been retained from 2021. “My wife and myself were raised in rural Suffolk and both of our fathers were full-time Suffolk Horseman, working the land before tractors started to dominant around the 1950’s. “Ufford Park had the opportunity to support the “Suffolk Horse” by sponsoring a foal at The Suffolk Punch Trust, which like every other living Suffolk Horse could trace its pedigree back to Crisps Horse born in Ufford in 1768. Unfortunately, our foal died prematurely, however, this new event creates another opportunity to support this endangered rare breed and Suffolk icon.” The event was held on Thursday 2nd June 2022 and 13 Suffolk Golf Clubs were represented. The competition was open to golfers with a maximum Handicap index limit of 8.9. — continues overleaf —

Best Gross score and winner of the Gold Suffolk Punch Trophy was Patrick Spraggs. He shot gross scores of 74 and 72 for a total winning score of 146 over 36 holes. Best Nett score and winner of the Silver Suffolk Punch Trophy was Ufford Park’s own, Fraser Johnson. He shot nett scores of 68 and 69 for a total winning score of 137 over 36 holes. As well as the help from the eight local sponsors, a donation from each entry fee was collected to support both The Suffolk Punch Trust and The Suffolk Horse Society and a fantastic total of £1,240 will be split between both local charities. “We were thrilled to attend another lovely day at Ufford Park Golf Tournament. Colony Aspall, our Suffolk Punch gelding came along to join in with the day’s fun. We are very grateful to Mr and Mrs Aldous for their continued support of The Suffolk Punch Trust and the Suffolk horse.” said Tracey Pettit, The Suffolk Punch Trust. Fiona Fleming, President of The Suffolk Horse Society said, “We were delighted to once again be asked by Colin Aldous and Ufford Park to represent The Suffolk Horse Society, at The Suffolk Punch Golf Tournament, especially with Ufford being the birth place of the first Suffolk horse stallion, “Crisps Horse of Ufford” born in 1768”. The Suffolk Horse Society is the official charity for the preservation and promotion of the Suffolk Punch Horse.

Just Push Play Lee Graham founded the Just Push Play Festival in 2015. “This was to mark the fifth anniversary of my Dads passing. He sadly succumbed to a short but intense battle with cancer (it was merely 13 days from his diagnosis to him sadly passing away just 50 years of age) in 2010.” explains Lee. “The first event was supposed to be a one off with local bands and a raffle. However, we raised over £1300 for St Nicholas Hospice Care (local hospice to myself who cared for my Dad during his final days), and I was encouraged to return in 2016.” The Just Push Play Festival has evolved from its humble beginnings into an annual one day music festival, and to date they have raised over £24,000 for the hospice. In 2018 the event moved from the social club it had been held to The Apex in Bury St Edmunds (800 approx. capacity venue) where it has been held ever since. “In recent years we have had appearances from the likes of Wolf Jaw, Massive Wagons, The Amorettes, Hollowstar and Dead Man’s Whiskey to name just a few acts.” Lee continues. “With Those Damn Crows headlining last year and further sets from the likes of Bad Touch, Gorilla Riot, Piston, Florence Black, The Nile Deltas, Jack J Hutchinson, At the Sun and The Hot One Two 2021 was our most successful show to date and in fact we sold out The Apex for the second year in a row!” 2022 sees the mighty Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons, headlining the event Phil Campbell himself of course was in Motorhead for over 30 years until

16

the sad passing of lead singer Lemmy Kilmister after a battle with cancer closed the doors for the band. So, there is some serious rock royalty headlining the show this year and with further sets from The Howling Tides, Massive, Skam, Empyre, These Wicked Rivers, Just A Ride, Samarkind, Mike Ross and Gallows Circus it is set to be another jam-packed day of killer live bands and all for St Nicholas Hospice Care! Just Push Play is at The Apex, Bury St Edmunds on Saturday 30th July. Tickets cost £30 and are available from Apex Box Office on 01284 758000. Summer at Snape 31 July – 31 August

Britten Pears Arts is preparing for its busy summer holiday season, with more than 60 events taking place from 31 July to 31 August at its two sites on the Suffolk coast, Snape Maltings and The Red House, Aldeburgh.

Snape Maltings Concert Hall Throughout August, Snape Maltings Concert Hall will host evening performances by world class artists from the fields of folk, jazz, rock and pop, and classical music. Among many highlights is the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, a brand new orchestra including Ukrainian musicians who have recently become refugees. Expect uplifting performances of classic songs and original material from the inspirational gospel singers, The Kingdom Choir, who sang at the 2018 Royal Wedding. The Piccadilly Dance Orchestra will take us back to the roaring twenties with jazz-age songs and hot dance numbers. Jazz performers include the Julian Bliss Septet and the Joe Stilgoe Trio. International stars of the classical world include pianist Nobuyuki Tsuuji from Japan, and the outstanding Emerson String Quartet from New York.

Eating options include the River View Café & Bar, and the River View Restaurant. A visit to The Red House, Aldeburgh completes the experience, with Britten and Pears’ home, museum, art collections, beautiful gardens, and the Britten & Women exhibition.

The Dome Stage Last year Britten Pears Arts created The Dome Stage at Snape Maltings – an outdoor stage by the river – as a space for Suffolk audiences to enjoy brilliant musical performances for free. After huge popularity, The Dome Stage will return to Snape Maltings this year. An incredible array of artists and sound worlds will be featured, and all concerts are free (booking required) taking place at 5.30pm.

A full coastal day out

Full line-up to be announced and tickets on sale from 2 July.

Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Snape Maltings is a paradise for walkers and wildlife lovers. Offers on the site include boat trips along the River Alde and a group of shops with a wonderfully stylish, individual aesthetic.

The Lark’s Flight A joyful concert The Lark’s Flight over Suffolk, presented by Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra in association with Suffolk Wildlife Trust. The Lark Ascending” is the UK’s best-loved piece of light classical music, and the Lark’s Flight over Suffolk is a cascade of some of the most attractive music by Ralph Vaughan Williams including The Lark Ascending, the Folk Song Suite, and the Oboe Concerto and more, all linked by actor Tim Welton (The Bill) as the composer himself. There are six performances across the county, in Bury St Edmunds, Eye, Aldeburgh, Felixstowe, Hadleigh, and at the Carlton Marshes Visitor Centre of Suffolk Wildlife Trust, who are a key partner in the project. Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra’s top professional musicians will also be taking this glorious music into a number of Suffolk schools during the summer term. Singing high above fields and marshes, the unmistakeable skylark is a joyful sound of spring and summer. A 62% breeding population decline between 1970 and 2015 makes skylark a red listed bird of conservation concern UK.

Skylark nest in open arable and pastoral fields with short growth crops or tussocky grass. They nest on the ground and feed their young exclusively on spiders and insects. Over winter, skylarks eat seeds and leaves of arable weed species. Skylark decline is linked to the widespread adoption of winter sown cereal crops not suitable for nesting in the spring, overuse of pesticides, reducing chick food, loss of winter stubbles, reducing adult winter food and a move to early silage cutting on grasslands, destroying nests in the spring. Suffolk Wildlife Trust works with farmers to identify and improve skylark habitat on farms throughout Suffolk. Skylark breed successfully on many of our nature reserves. The composer of The Lark Ascending is Ralph Vaughan Williams, who was born 150 years ago this year. The Lark’s Flight over Suffolk seeks to broaden enjoyment of this music while educating us all about how we can help the skylark. Tickets for all six venues are on sale now from the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds. Or go online to https://www.suffolkphil.org/copy-of-home for a link to the Box Office website. 19

The Crown The Crown is a cosy 15th century Inn based in the wonderful village of Snape. We have two recently refurbished letting rooms that are available all year round. The interior of the pub was refurbished in 2020 giving one side of the pub a modernised look and the other keeping it traditional. We have a beautiful high back double settle around our log burner which is the perfect place to spend a cold winter evening. We are within walking distance of the famous Snape Maltings which makes us an ideal venue for pre concert dining and overnight stays. The Crown is the only pub in the village with a beer garden and it’s the best place to be on a hot sunny day. We have lots of outdoor seating in the garden and at the rear of the pub. We are family friendly. Our menu is a mixture of pub classics and good quality homemade food. All of our meat produce is supplied by local butchers and we try and support local wherever we can. We serve stone baked pizzas freshly made in our kitchen, you can choose however many toppings you’d like! These were a customer favourite last year whilst sipping on a pint

RILEY & RILEY FINE JEWELLERY

Riley & Riley Fine Jewellery was established in 2004 by husband and wife team, Mark and Tessa Riley. We visted their showroom in Aldeburgh to find out why they chose their Suffolk coastal location. Riley & Riley is a totally independent jewellers conceived, designed and owned by Mark and Tessa, both of whom have worked in jewellery all their working lives. Having managed shops for some significant companies around the country, they decided that the best way to give their customers the products and service they really wanted to give, was to 'do it' themselves!!! Their ethos is to provide exciting, contemporary and traditional jewellery of great quality at competitive prices with the absolute best in service, attention and care. Their fantastic knowledge and enthusiasm are at the core of this ethos. We particularly like the 'Aldeburgh Pebbles' that Mark makes. They are solid sterling silver (can be made in gold!!) and everyone is hand-made and unique. Mark said, 'I walk along the beach road on my way to the showroom and as well as soaking up the views, seeing children painting pebbles from the beach, caught my imagination. So I set about creating unique pieces of jewellery that are beautiful and tactile and are not only inspired by nature, are almost created by nature. I make a mould from an actual beach pebble and cast a facsimile in solid silver, which I then make into pieces ofjewellery. I only use any pebble once, so each piece ofjewellery is totally unique. Each piece also bears my individual R&R sponsor mark.'

We asked Mark (a qualified gemmologist) what inspires him about the coastal location and why he chose to site his workbench in Aldeburgh ... 'When 122 High Street came on the market, as soon as we saw it we knew it was perfect! Aldeburgh is such a beautiful and unique town and our shop has such a commanding, prominent location, we hardly had to think twice. It is no surprise really that I make all my pieces in Aldeburgh, it is and has been, home to so many creative people, that its inspiration goes before it!'

One of their most popular ranges is 'Personalised.' Mark explained; 'We hand forge rings and discs and make classic and multi-layered circle pendants and bangles. The pieces can be personalised with names, dates, or a short message, which are hand-punched into the metal and included in the price.' At the absolute core of their business are gem rings and wedding rings, they have great selections, prices and expertise, but are particularly proud of their gem rings, many of which are made especially to customers specifications. 'There is nothing more rewarding than finding the perfect gemstone and combining it with the perfect setting to create a truly personal piece ofjewellery.'

What else can we expect in store? 'Well, we really are, pretty much a one stop shop! As well as gem rings and wedding rings we have a great range of Amber, Rainbow Moonstone, pearls, secondhand and period pieces, a large range of Kit Heath jewellery, one of the largest ranges of silver bangles and watches from Roamer, Accurist and GMT. We also have a full repair service and undertake everything from simple sizings and watch batteries to complete remodels and restorations. ’

Millions dream of living the French way Millions of Brits dream of living the French lifestyle because of the bakeries, landmarks – and cheese

croissants (35 per cent), champagne (27 per cent) and brioche (20 per cent) named the best items to come out of the country. St Pierre Bakery commissioned the study and created a quiz allowing people to find out how French their lifestyle is stpierrebakery.co.uk/blog/how-french-are-you/ — continues overleaf —

A study of 2,000 adults discovered four in 10 feel the French way of life seems better than the British, and 24 per cent fantasise about experiencing it. More than a fifth (21 per cent) would consider moving across the channel, with 15 per cent having a spell living in the country in the past. Visiting the cafes and coffee shops is the top reason for wanting to live in France, followed by the bakeries, croissants and pastries. Other reasons to feature in the top 30 list included visiting the Alps, castles and beaches, as well as immersing themselves in art galleries, eating brioche and learning the language. It also emerged Brits consider the French lifestyle to be relaxed (44 per cent), cultured (42 per cent) and sociable (39 per cent). But 42 per cent think France is a ‘foodie country’, with

Millions dream of living the French way Founder Paul Baker said, “It’s clear that whatever the British perception of the French lifestyle is, we certainly dream of living it. We automatically think of pastries, coffee, wine and cheese, and that’s just the food and drink.” The study also found 28 per cent of adults have taken inspiration from the French lifestyle, when it comes to their cooking (46 per cent), interest in artwork (43 per cent) and their taste in films and TV (41 per cent). While a third believe pop culture, including shows like ‘Emily in Paris’, have given them an idea of what living in France would be like. When it comes to the language, 26 per cent already speak French, while another 14 per cent are currently learning. And many are already enjoying foods which originated across the channel, with baguettes (44 per cent), brie (29 per cent) and brioche (25 per cent) among the most popular. Ratatouille (16 per cent) and soufflé (11 per cent) are also top choices, according to the research carried out via OnePoll. It’s not just food Brits have taken inspiration from as they believe 23 per cent of everyday vocabulary originates from France. Among the words and phrases the nation believe have

French origin are cliché (47 per cent), baguette (46 per cent) and chauffeur (45 per cent). Yet in a list of more than 40 words local to France, five per cent said they didn’t recognise any words as being French. Paul Baker of St Pierre Bakery added, “Travel has been a challenge for all of us lately and our taste-buds have missed world travel, too. That’s part of why Brits are increasingly seeking out and enjoying new flavours. “The fact that a quarter of us believe that if we embraced the French lifestyle, we’d be more willing to try new food and drink says it all. Great food makes great memories and that’s important wherever you are in the world. “We are inspired by France and want to help bring a little taste of the French lifestyle to Brits with our authentic brioche, to help make everyday that little bit more magnifique.”

Brits moving in search of a garden New research from Churchill Home Insurance reveals that the desire for a garden is driving Brits out of towns and cities and into more affordable areas where they can buy a home with outside space. The single biggest factor for half of those planning to buy a home in the next year, some 2.4 million people, is to have a garden. Showing how much life has changed since the pandemic hit, one in six (18 per cent) people plan to move further away from their place of work as they will no longer need to do the five-day commute of pre pandemic times. Being close to a workplace is important to just half (50 per cent) of Brits and over a quarter (28 per cent) admit it was not important to them when considering moving plans. Due to Covid–19 there has been a shift to people’s lifestyle too, with nearly one in six people (17 per cent) having already, or planning to relocate from suburban areas to rural areas, and access to green spaces listed as the join most important factor when considering a move (81 per cent). The proportion of those living in rural areas is expected to grow from 16 per cent to 22 per cent over the next 12 months. On average, home movers will relocate 35 miles away from their previous home and those aged 55-64 are likely to make the biggest move, at an average of 41 miles. The pandemic has also shifted priorities for many people who may have felt isolated during lockdowns if they didn’t live close to family and friends. Moving closer to a family member is a key consideration for 71 per cent of movers. Along with outside space, extra living area is another key consideration for movers, having a larger space within their home, such as a bigger kitchen, is important to over two thirds of Brits generally (67 per cent). With house prices 10 per cent higher in March 2021 than March 20202, it is understandable that to afford a bigger house with a garden means people need to move further out of towns and cities. Churchill’s research also found that nearly two thirds (61 per cent, 5.4 million) of those moving have had their purchasing decision influenced by

30

the Stamp Duty holiday, with over a quarter (28 per cent, 2.5 million) only buying because of the reduced rates. Steven Williams, Head of Churchill home insurance, said, “Despite economic uncertainty, our research shows that people are continuing to move home and are prioritising more rural, greener spaces and upsizing their properties. Since the pandemic it’s clear that lifestyles have changed, with a garden and being close to family more important than proximity to a workplace. With many not expecting to return to offices full time, people are understandably wanting a better quality of home life, rather than choosing somewhere with a short commute. “Whether people are looking to move out to greener areas or staying put in towns and cities, it’s important to remember to insure the new property and make sure your new home and belongings are protected.”

What we are reading…

The Escape Artist Jonathan Freedland In April 1944 nineteenyear-old Rudolf Vrba and fellow inmate Fred Wetzler became the first Jews ever to break out of Auschwitz. Vrba’s mission: to reveal to the world the truth of the Holocaust. In Auschwitz, he had witnessed almost every chilling stage of the Nazis’ process of industrialised murder. After his escape, that information would form a priceless thirtytwo-page report that would reach Roosevelt, Churchill and the pope and eventually save over 200,000 lives. But the escape from Auschwitz was not his last. After the war, he kept running - from his past, from his home country, from his adopted country, even from his own name. Few knew of the truly extraordinary deed he had done.

The Bullet That Missed Richard Osman It is an ordinary Thursday, and things should finally be returning to normal. Except trouble is never far away where the Thursday Murder Club are concerned. A decade-old cold case leads them to a local news legend and a murder with no body and no answers. Then a new foe pays Elizabeth a visit. Her mission? Kill...or be killed. As the cold case turns white hot, Elizabeth wrestles with her conscience (and a gun), while Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim chase down clues with help from old friends and new. But can the gang solve the mystery and save Elizabeth before the murderer strikes again?

Bake Paul Hollywood Cakes, biscuits and cookies, breads and flatbreads, pizza and doughnuts, pastries and pies, and showstopping desserts: this book has it all. From classic cakes like the Victoria Sandwich and Chocolate Fudge Cake, through brilliant breads like his foolproof Sourdough, to savoury and sweet pastries like Sausage Rolls and Danish Pastries, these are the only recipes you’ll need to create perfectly delicious bakes time and time again. With more years as a professional baker than he’d care to remember and over 10 years judging the best baking show on TV, Paul has created, tested and tasted a huge number of bakes.

Maybe Baby: On the Mother Side Kate Lawler Sheila Hancock looked like she was managing old age. She had weathered and even thrived in widowhood, taking on acting roles that would have been demanding for a woman half her age. She had energy, friends, a devoted family, a lovely home. She could still remember her lines. So why, at 89, having sailed past supposedly disturbing milestones - 50, 70 even 80 without a qualm, did she suddenly feel so furious? Shocking diagnoses, Brexit and bereavement seemed to knock her from every quarter. And that was before lockdown. Funny, feisty, honest, she makes for brilliant company as she talks about her life as a daughter, a sister, a mother, a widow.
