The Ipswich Society is proud to co-ordinate the Heritage Open Days on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September 2019 when many building are open to the public to view. As usual the everpopular Willis Building rooftop will be open again and new venues this year include Birkett’s Providence House, on Princes Street, with tours which will also include a visit to the roof garden, with views across Ipswich Town football ground on one side and the Waterfront buildings on the other. After all the hustle and the bustle of those Summer Holidays, come and relax at The Black Barn, Hasketon and enjoy one of the numerous Art Workshops they have to offer. You can drop in for a short taster with Clay any time with Resident Artist: Emma Jayne Robertson of EJR Ceramics, or you can book your space on our everchanging program of clay and other art and craft workshops. If you just fancy a short browse in the shop at some of the wonderful work by East Anglian Artists, or perhaps you want to buy that special gift, you are more than welcome. For more information please email: ejrceramics@ btinternet.com or Tel: 01473 735007

Creativity available to all and a Celebration of East Anglian Artists

Emma Jayne Robertson of EJR Ceramics opened her new larger premises EJaRt Creative, in July this year: bringing together all aspects of creativity. Having established EJR Ceramics in 2009, after studying a Masters Degree in Contemporary Applied Arts, Emma Jayne has been selling and

exhibiting her Ceramics in Galleries and Shops Nationwide, operating from her small Studio in Kenton, Suffolk. She enjoys passing on her expertise and experience to others and has been Tutoring in numerous Schools and operating Mobile Workshops for all ages and abilities around Suffolk for many years. “Come and explore a variety of techniques and create your own masterpieces. Whether you wish to drop in for a Taster or attend a series of sessions; you will enjoy getting Creative.” This year is rather special for Emma Jayne as she has taken over The Black Barn, at Grange Farm, Hasketon, near Woodbridge. She now works from her larger Studio Space, at EJaRt Creative, enabling her to produce and exhibit more of her own Ceramic Art.

Studio

“A Dream Come True.” Emma first had the idea for this venture when she finished training years ago. It was hard finding the right premises, as she wanted a larger Studio to work from, where she could demonstrate

you don’t have to go far for that special present or just a browse around and you can treat yourself to some of the finest creations. If the inspiration takes you, Emma also offers a variety of Art and Clay Supplies to compliment the courses, so you can continue your creativity at home.

all the various methods of working with clay to everyone coming in. At the same time, being able to continue to experiment with her own designs for her own work for sale. The Black Barn is her “Dream Come True”. It is large enough for the expansion and being just off the A12, it is in a perfect location. So within only a few weeks to refurbish the premises, she is up and running from there.

Emma Jayne’s eye for design and experience of exhibiting her own work in various Galleries across the Country, certainly is impressive. Her time helping to curate for “Suffolk Exhibitions” with a fellow Photographer and organising various Local Artist’s Exhibits, inspired her to want to showcase, not just Local Talent, but Artists from the whole East Anglian Region. Her chosen exhibits are stunning and the quality and diversity of creativity is amazing: to think all this talent is right on our doorstep.

If you do manage a visit to The Barn, you will see this wonderful space is now fully utilised and with an endless list of Workshops in all sorts of Media, for people to choose from, supported by a Team of experienced Tutor’s, we think you will be suitably impressed. With assorted activities and Craft for Kids during term times and holidays, along with sessions exclusively for Clay Juniors, Emma really caters for all.

Shop

“A lovely lady with a lovely shop. Some beautiful Art from a range of Artists and a good price range of things to buy.” The “wow” factor certainly hits you as you walk into this beautiful place, where tranquillity and peacefulness, surrounded by the beautiful building and Artist’s work, is an inspiration to anyone. The work for sale is of excellent quality, but also affordable to all. Open seven days a week means

“Guest Artists”

Wanting to inspire others with some talent from further afield, Emma Jayne is choosing to exhibit a Guest Artist or two every so often. So, if it’s a Demonstration and Showcase of Unique Talent, a touch of Shopping, or a relaxing workshop you are after. EJaRt Creative is the place to visit. Suffolk New College: Leisure Learning Suffolk New College in Ipswich supports thousands of students of all ages across the region and beyond. Their popular leisure learning programme has been steadily growing since being re-introduced in 2017. We chatted to Avianna Haynes who helps oversee the programme. She tells us everything you need to know about a programme that offers everything from language to literature and breadmaking to bricklaying. So Avianna, what sort of people study on the courses?

We get a whole range of learners. We get lots of people who are looking to gain a new skill. Some people use this as a chance to relax after a hard day at work. Lots of parents of students sign up to on courses and aspiring artists and professionals who are looking for a new hobby also get involved.

Give us a flavour of some of the courses that you teach.

Our painting and drawing classes are gaining in popularity. We have established courses such as dressmaking and printmaking and since opening a new fabrication and welding centre in 2017, these courses have been very well attended. One of our learners (in his fifties) even managed to get a job off the back of studying on a short course in this subject. Our cookery courses have made a comeback and we have now introduced a vegan course because of the ongoing trend for these recipes. Languages such as French, Spanish and Polish always attract lots of people and our biggest language seller in the last 12 months is Japanese.

n Avianna Haynes

their course. Other courses include Kirigami – a Japanese art form of paper cutting, Chinese for beginners and we are also looking to have selfdefence training in the future.

When do the courses start?

They all begin on 23rd September 2019 – although a few will commence in October.

What is the price range?

The prices range from £40.00 to £200.00. Language courses are just over £100.00 for a ten week course - so that works out at around a tenner per lesson. Prices range for a reason. For example, bricklaying is more expensive because of the materials that are used – but at the end of it – you get a skill for life.

Any new courses to look out for?

Apart from the vegan cooking, we have a chocolate making course, several one day cookery options and sewing for beginners. Since the TV sewing programme The Great Sewing Bee started on the BBC, we have seen a real interest in this subject grow. The ten week isewing course allows learners to make a kaftan dress at the end of

8

0919_central_.indd 8

16/08/2019 11:03

What is the most popular course?

The fact that we have added more Japanese courses to the programme proves their popularity. I’m not quite sure why this is the case. Perhaps it’s to do with the fact that the Tokyo Olympics are taking place in 2020. French and Spanish courses are always strong. Lots of people in the UK are buying houses and moving to the continent so maybe they are learning the basics before heading off to live their dreams abroad. But generally our cookery programmes have a huge demand. I’d love to think they will produce the next MasterChef.

How can people sign up to courses?

All of our courses are on our website - https:// www.suffolk.ac.uk/courses/leisure-learning Alternatively, people can ring me direct on 01473 382359 and I will answer all your questions.

What are the benefits of studying on one of the courses?

You get to meet people and make new friends and you get to learn something new in a relaxed environment. Our tutors are all experts in their field so you either learn something from scratch from a qualified teacher or upskill what you already know.

Why in your opinion should people sign up for a course?

I think it’s a great chance to get out of the everyday, try something new and learn about a subject that you are passionate about. Most importantly you do not have to be an expert to do any of the courses we deliver. We have had ex-army veterans taking on our art courses or housewives that want to improve their DIY skills for their homes. It’s a really positive and enlightening experience for all.

Have you got any feedback from people who have been on one of the courses?

We’ve had beautiful feedback for our leisure learning courses. The general comments we gain have expressed the wonderful way in which the specialists attune to the needs of the group and at the end of the course - earners gain a real sense of achievement. They often say they are now confident to apply what they have learnt on the course into their day-to-day hobbies and lifestyles – this is very heart-warming to hear. www.suffolk.ac.uk

Christmas customs around the World

China's custom of eating an apple on Christmas Eve and Venezuela's ritual of rollerskating to church are among the festive traditions we’d like to adopt in Britain, a study found.

Other traditions to capture our imagination include Japan's tradition of having fried chicken for Christmas dinner and Columbia's 'Little Candles Day'.

The research also found 56 per cent of those polled have or would go abroad to celebrate Christmas and enjoy different festive traditions for the first time.

We'd also like to adopt customs such as Austria's demon known as Krampus and hiding away brooms as they do in Norway, to deprive witches of their favourite mode of transport.

Further to this, half enjoy learning about different customs from around the world as they help us understand and appreciate what Christmas is really about.

Iceland’s Yule Lads – 13 cheeky troll-like characters who visit each child, leaving gifts or rotting potatoes depending on the child's behavior – and decorating windows with red paper pagodas, as seen in China, would also be welcome here.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD:

Commissioned by Air China, the research of 2,000 UK adults found around a quarter believe Christmas traditions are the most important thing about Yuletide.

• Celebrating with a beach barbeque in Australia

A spokesman for Air China said, “It’s fascinating to see all the fantastic ways people across the world celebrate Christmas. Traditions are such a key part of what makes the festive period so magical and having the opportunity to travel abroad and experience them first hand is truly amazing.

• The 'Cavalcade of Lights' in Toronto

• Chinese people exchanging apples wrapped in coloured paper, as the Chinese word for 'apple' sounds similar to the word for 'peace' • Chinese people decorating their windows with red paper pagodas • The Giant Lantern Festival in the Philippines • The Christmas Eve 'Grand Market' in Jamaica • British people hiding a coin in the Christmas pudding • 'Little Candles Day' in Columbia

“In addition to creating wonderful memories, seeing how other countries embrace Christmas can make us really appreciate what matters most this time of year. This is further shown in how half of Brits enjoy learning about other cultures’ customs to inspire new practices too.”

• Iceland's "Yule Lads", 13 tricksy troll-like characters

Other customs admired by those polled include the giant lantern festival as celebrated in the Philippines, the cavalcade of lights as seen in Canada and Sweden's 13 metre tall Yule Goat.

• Hiding brooms in Norway

• The 13-metre-tall "Yule Goat" in Sweden • The Austrian demon known as the "Krampus" • People in Japan having fried chicken for their Christmas dinner • Visiting church on Christmas Eve in Venezuala on roller skates

Christmas Shopping Started your Christmas shopping yet? Some of your friends have finished already! Sshhh its that time of year again… while you are still dreamily remembering days on the beach, the shops are gearing up to start their Christmas sales. If this thought doesn’t send you into a blind panic you could be one of the 27% of parents who shop all year round for Christmas presents. A survey commissioned by HEXBUG UK reveals that as a nation many of our mums are a pretty organised bunch and planning for Christmas begins even before the last of the mince pies have been eaten. The survey asked participants about their shopping habits and some mums make Christmas

shopping seem like an Olympic sport: “I use a Christmas spreadsheet spanning the past eleven years” admitted one mum. 27% of mums say they always start their shopping in the January sales and buy presents consistently throughout the year for their children. Although this organisation can sometimes have flaws as one mum admits “I tend to buy bits all year and then forget where I have hidden them so end up buying double in December!” If these super-organised mums make you feel inferior, don’t despair as the survey also found that 51% of mums admit to running around frantically in December scooping up the remnants and

Christmas Shopping making daily trips to the toy shops! And that’s not forgetting dads who unanimously favoured 24th December as their preferred shopping day. So what of the Christmas in July Lists? All the top toys are announced in July to whet the festive appetite and spark a shopping frenzy. However, just 2% of those surveyed said they were influenced by these lists. The remaining 20% wait until the children go back to school in September to let the festive madness commence. Heather Corbett, Marketing Manager at HEXBUG UK comments, ”As a toy company we are endlessly fascinated by shopping habits and finding that shopping sweet spot is the holy grail for many companies - not just toys. This survey tells us that a lot of mums, while influenced by the marketing surrounding Christmas, are super-savvy and organised in their own right and don’t need a December deadline looming to hit the shops hard!”

HEXBUG UK has devised a Top Ten list of shopping tips to help mums make the most of their Christmas shopping all year round - after all, everyone should have the time to make a mulled wine pit-stop! Eat smart! If you are doing this in one day you need a good breakfast to see you through until lunch

Go armed with a list because your Dad doesn’t need another pair of slippers. Check deals - be armed with discounts and special offers before stepping foot out of the door Shop alone - if you are doing some serious shopping you need to go solo! You do not

0919_central_.indd 16

need distractions. That doll may be perfect for your friends niece but not for yours! Avoid the queues - choose pay desks in the men’s and home departments. They are always less crowded.

Power Up - you need lunch… see Tip1! Know when to stop - Listen up the 27% of all-year round shoppers. Santa’s sleigh can only take so much as can your house!

Keep all of your receipts no-brainer…and if they don’t like it you can always buy something in the sales! Shop on Christmas Eve - this tip is not for the faint hearted but shops will be quieter! Get Online - Grab a mulled wine, put your feet up and avoid the crowds… unless you thrive on the pressure!

Master Christmas Millions of millennials reckon they have got Christmas ‘mastered’, according to a study. Researchers revealed one in six think they have already got the festive season down to a fine art, nailing their first Christmas for themselves at the age of 25 on average. And a third of millennials think their hosting skills rival those their parents displayed during Christmases when they were growing up.

It also emerged one in two enjoy a ‘Matesmas’ – a YuleTide gathering with friends – more than they do a traditional family Christmas. A survey of 2,000 Brits who celebrate Christmas found nearly one in four are in complete control when the festive season comes around, and one in two reckon they have the elements of hosting a great Christmas down. The study found it will take until the age of 32 before the average Brit is able to achieve this level of festive mastery when hosting their own Christmas gathering. Angela Solkesz of premium Single Malt Scotch whisky brand The Singleton, which commissioned the research, said, “Christmas is a large and unwieldy event in our minds, but ambitious millennials are taking up the challenge of surpassing the classic Christmases in their memories. ''Whether it’s gifting the perfect tipple, making sure your guests are having a great time at your party or just managing to gather all your friends together at the same time and place, millennials seem more than up to the task.”

Of all the aspects of Christmas we find easiest to master, over in four Brits think they are great present-buyers. Alcohol is the most popular present to give between friends, and 30 per cent will treat friends or family to a bottle of whisky this Christmas. A quarter think Christmas time is the time of year when they are most likely to treat themselves to a more adventurous alcoholic drink or cocktails. Of the areas of Christmas we find difficult to master, keeping organised, avoiding unnecessary stress and doing the big food shop were considered some of the toughest aspects. A quarter find it difficult to manage the levels of stress Christmas can bring, and one in eight thought throwing the perfect Christmas party and keeping guests happy was the tallest order of the season. Solkesz added, “Christmas is a busy time, but it seems millennials have an aptitude for finding order in the chaos.”

TOUGHEST ASPECTS OF CHRISTMAS TO MASTER 1. Buying great presents

2. Having everything organised on time 3. Not stressing when things go wrong 4. Cooking the dinner in general 5. Doing the big food shop

A Black Comedy Common Ground Theatre Company present A Sidecar Named Despair! by Pat Whymark & Julian Harries. Take a ride up the comedy freeway with a tale of mobsters, missing gems and a mashed-up motorbike. “Lively and most entertaining...The play has a wonderful flow...These talented actor-musicians often chop and change characters with ease. The humour is great and there are plenty of ‘one liners’ to add to the chuckles" (Robert Wright, reviewing our 2017 tour of The Old Curiosity Shop in the Eastern Daily Press) Dick’s quiet suburban life is shattered when his brother Julian returns suddenly from The States, for “health” reasons. But his shady American “associates” have unfinished business with him, putting both their health at risk. Their dad’s old motorbike and sidecar, which Dick has been restoring, might come in handy as their getaway vehicle! Following out acclaimed 2018 touring production, The Mariner, Common Ground Theatre Company present a black comedy with original music by Pat

Whymark and Julian Harries and starring Julian and Dick Mainwaring - reprising the characters they created for Common Ground's 2013 comedy, Stuff In The Attic. Expect "The Odd Couple" versus the Mob! Tips for choosing the perfect Wedding Dress When it comes to planning your wedding choosing your wedding dress is probably one of the most important decisions you are likely to make, so it is essential that you get it right. Every bride has an idea of how they want to look on their wedding day but it is best to approach buying your wedding dress with an open mind. After all what looks fabulous on a perfect size eight, six foot tall model is unlikely to look that great on the rest of us. When choosing a dress always ask the assistant for advice, they will have a better idea what styles will suit your shape and colouring. Take someone with you that will give you an honest opinion, it’s no good taking a friend that is going to say you look great in a dress that’s just not your style. Try on as many styles as you can, don’t discard a gown without trying it on first, quite often a dress that doesn’t look good on the hanger will look amazing on. Don’t be afraid to take a camera with you, take pictures of the dresses you like, and go back on another day and try them on again. Once you have chosen your perfect dress make sure you can sit, kneel and breathe whilst wearing it. Ok this may seem a little strange, but you will be wearing your dress all day so you need to make sure you can move in it. Remember it is your wedding day, so don’t let yourself be pressurised into wearing something that you don’t feel comfortable in.

Picking a venue Picking the perfect wedding venue is an important part of planning your wedding and one that should not be taken lightly. The venue of the wedding will be a large factor in determining your theme and decorations and it should therefore be done carefully. It pays to take time and visit as many different venues as possible. Check in your local phone book or look on the internet to create a list of potential candidates. Then make arrangements to visit the sites with your fiancĂŠe ahead of time. It may help to keep a list of the venues that you visit and jot down a few notes about each one. This will help jog your memory, after you have visited several sites it can become difficult to remember each one. While you are visiting the wedding venue make sure to just spend some time looking around. Don't be rushed by someone who is trying to show off the site. Rather take your time and absorb the surroundings. Imagine your wedding in your mind and see if it fits with the place. Most of all trust your instincts. You will know when you have found a good potential venue it will just feel right. If it is possible a second visit to a select group of venues might be best made at the same time of day that your wedding will take place. This way you can get a better feel for the sights, sound and feel of the venue

enough to hold your entire wedding party? Or, if you’re planning to have a smaller intimate wedding you do not want a site that is too large either. So planning ahead based on the size of your wedding you can make sure the size and space at the venue will enhance the wedding and not detract from it. Check with the person giving you a tour of the venue if there are any restrictions. Often there can be restrictions about the amount and type of wedding decorations that can be used and you will want to know this beforehand. Sometimes there can also be restrictions on noise and this is something you will want to know when you are making your plans. If you know what the restrictions are but really love the wedding venue it can be fairly easy to adapt the decorations and wedding plan to fit the venue and its restrictions. However you want to know this before hand and not last minute so it can be very helpful to ask early. By visiting potential wedding venue sites before hand you can really learn a lot and then make an informed decision based on your findings. The most important thing to consider is how you feel about the site. Again trust your instinct in this arena and make sure the venue is something that speaks to you, it should be a place that you can easily imagine yourself getting married at.

You want to carefully consider the amount of space available at the wedding venue. Is it large

Colour Block your Home

Colour blocking with fresh pastels like lilac, mint and blush is shaping up to be a favourite. A chic way to get this look is by mixing cool neutrals with mixed pastel walls for a bold statement at home. It’s also a great opportunity to play with 2019’s It-shades; sage is still popular as a versatile neutral and lilac - a gentler answer to Ultraviolet offers a calmer look that’s still very on-trend. It’s all about determining the right colour mixes and where to show them off, whether it’s on a large scale or in small, arty doses. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture shares three stylish approaches toward colour blocking at home. 1. Make a statement with colour blocked walls For maximum impact and style, take it to the walls. “Unexpected colour combinations offer a fresh, contemporary feel, while a unique play on patterns amplifies the effect,” says Rebecca. “If you’re going with a mix of cool and warm tones, introducing a third neutral shade will balance both sides out. For instance,

matching grey with fresh pastels like lilac and mint creates an interesting and energetic appeal that would look great as a feature wall. “It’s a great way to dress up your wall and also put the focus on a special piece of furniture. You can either go with eye-catching shapes and lines, or paint out a section of the wall for a clever framing effect.” 2. Create a striking contrast with light furniture Your walls are the star here, but that doesn’t mean they can’t share the limelight. Choosing furniture in light tones will immediately create a contrast, without adding more colour to a space. “Colours like beige, white and even blush stand out well against bright and dark colour combinations, putting a spotlight on your favourite furniture and decor,” advises Rebecca. “It offers a different perspective on pieces that you already own, giving it an instant summer-ready update that can work in harmony with the new colour palette.” 3. Jazz it up with colour blocked accessories

If you’re looking for a quick and versatile way to embrace this trend, styling with colour blocked accessories is the way to go. “This is a great approach if you’re not ready to delve deep into colour blocked walls and furniture,” Rebecca says. “It allows for more freedom when it comes to combining colours and patterns, and you can rearrange and switch them out with the seasons.” “The dining table is a perfect centrepiece to highlight this vibrant. Sage is still a trendy shade to experiment with, and if Ultraviolet isn’t your cup of tea, consider its lighter cousin lilac for a gentler pop of purple. “Coasters are an easy way to jazz up your table setting, colour block-style. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing and functional, they also make for a simple and fun DIY project where you can customise the colours and patterns to your liking. “Plates, mugs and other tableware offer a playful burst of colour that’s ideal for sunnier weather, and are incredibly Instagram-ready too.” FurnitureChoice.co.uk

Berry, Berry Nice Berry-bearing trees and shrubs come into their own in autumn, creating colourful displays that can last well into winter. From elder berries to rose hips, crab apples to firethorns, the addition of berrying plants adds to a new dimension to any garden, with plants carry fruits and berries through autumn and into winter. Berrying plants also provide home grown food for hungry birds and wildlife too, enhancing their appeal and value to any garden. Evergreen shrubs provide structure and form to the garden throughout the year, but many produce early displays of flowers followed by autumn berries. Once of the best compact shrubs for borders or patio pots is a Skimmia with a mouthful of a name, Skimmia japonica subsp. reevesiana. Don't let this put you off as its displays of bright red berries are second to none! Also check out the compact and spreading Viburnum davidii, a hardy shrub with distinctly veined evergreen foliage that produces the most unusual metallic-looking blue-black berries. It really is quite a talking point.

To create seasonal pots for autumn colour include a small Gaultheria mucronata carrying brilliant berries in pink, red or pure white. Combined with pansies and violas, trailing ivy, heather, carex or skimmia your pots will put on a display that lasts for months. Trained against walls and fences, firethorn is a valuable evergreen shrub. Its thorny stems make it a great choice for producing secure garden boundaries, but don't let the spines put you off buying Pyracantha. They provide valuable nesting sites for birds, flowers that attract bees, and red, orange or yellow berries to feed birds into winter. Explore the cotoneaster family too, attractive ornamental shrubs with year-round appeal. The arching stems with herringbonepatterned stalks of Cotoneaster horizontalis

make it an excellent choice to carpet banks and low borders or train up to cover bare fences. Birds love these berries, quickly stripping stems bare as they stock-up for winter. If space allows, many ornamental trees produce bright berries and fruits as well as good displays of autumn foliage colour. Two of the best families are Rowan (Sorbus) and Crab Apple (Malus), and both make ideal trees for small gardens. With such a rich and diverse range of plants to choose from it really is possible to fill your borders with berried treasure this autumn! www.hta.org.uk

drainage holes getting blocked and pots filling-up with water, literally drowning their roots!

1. Many shrubs can be given a permanent home in large patio pots. Plant pots using a freedraining loam-based compost.

3. Small berry-bearing shrubs included in seasonal patio pot arrangements can be removed and planted out in the garden next spring.

2. Always stand pots on feet during winter to prevent

4. Some plants have both male and female varieties, so it might just be the female one you buy that's carrying berries. Ask for advice, as in future years you may need to grow male forms alongside the females to ensure their flowers get pollinated and develop future crops of berries.

On the Big Screen New and Forthcoming Movie Releases

Downton Abbey Starring Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Maggie Smith the tv favourite Downton Abbey moves to the big screen. The story is being kept very much underwraps, but teasers have let us know that the story will revolve around a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary. Set in 1927 (a year on from the TV series’ finale) with the Great Depression looming and the Crawleys tightening their belts with their once large bevy of servants now diminished. One thing can be guaranteed, this is going to be one of the British cinema highlights of the year.

Ad Astra In the year when the media has been dominated by space travel and the Apollo moon-landings, comes this timely space-based drama. Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of humans on Earth. His journey will uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos.

Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day... a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.

Picking up fifteen years after its predecessor’s tantalisingly openended conclusion, The Testaments promises a new window into Atwood’s dystopian world, as seen through the eyes of three women of Gilead. In this electrifying sequel, author Margaret Atwood answers the question that has tantalised readers for decades: What happened to Offred?

In Praise of Walking Shane O'Mara Walking upright on two feet is a uniquely human skill. It defines us as a species. It enabled us to walk out of Africa and to spread as far as Alaska and Australia. It freed our hands and freed our minds. We put one foot in front of the other without thinking – yet how many of us know how we do that, or appreciate the advantages it gives us? In this hymn to walking, neuroscientist Shane O’Mara invites us to marvel at the benefits it confers on our bodies and minds. Walking is good for our muscles and posture; it helps to protect and repair organs, and can slow or turn back the ageing of our brains.
