To summer, a time for sun, fun and dare we dream it some sort of normality. When holidays abroad are still a bit hit and miss it’s a great time to holiday locally, perhaps a holiday cottage? There is a great choice on offer with Suffolk Secrets and original cottages, something for everyone! Days out can be just as fun. With Southwold, Adleburgh, Orford and Snape virtually fully opened, with so much to do and enjoy. As a youngster one of my favourites was a row boat on Thorpeness Mere, still just as popular now, give it a go. For a real treat, dine at the award winning Lighthouse restaurant in Aldeburgh for fantastic locally sourced food. Have fun, stay safe

Woodbridge Library's events programme re-opens in the open air on Saturday 31st July in Elmhurst Park. Performing in the bandstand, local band East of the Sun will bring their varied repertoire of classic pop, rock, soul and country music. During lockdown, the band has had to resort to keeping in tune by rehearsing in the bass player's back garden. What better testimonial can we have than the fact that the neighbours regularly burst into spontaneous applause?

Live Music in the Park

Rachel Keveren is the voice of the band and is delighted at the prospect of singing again to a live audience. She has performed in a couple of pantos with the Deben Players and will shortly appear in Suffolk's Mustard Theatre Company's production of Wait Until Dark. The guitarist is Chris Moore, a retired teacher with experience of playing in a country-duo, a blues band and a jazz big band. He is well-known locally having performed in The Crown and various Peninsula pubs. The bass player Greg Walsh founded East of the Sun a couple of years ago and is also well known for his handyman skills: he is a leading light of the Woodbridge Repair Cafe. Martin Minta is the band's drummer - and he will play on a kit he bought as a 17 year old. Professionally he has been closely involved with trees and parks so he should be at home on the night. This gig should be a really enjoyable restart to the events programme organised by the Friends of Woodbridge Library (FOWL) so book the date and hope for good weather: Saturday 31st July at 6pm in Elmhurst Park. Tickets are free but must be obtained by visiting https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ music-in-the-park-tickets-156117296035. Please bring your own seating and refreshment and during the interval we will collect donations to the work of FOWL.

Big Hoot

Ipswich

After much excitement and intrigue St Elizabeth Hospice has revealed the Big Hoot Ipswich 2022 will be the latest art trail to be held in the town in partnership with creative producers, Wild in Art. The identity of the owl sculptures, which will make up the Big Hoot Ipswich 2022, was recently revealed virtually across St Elizabeth Hospice’s social media platforms. As part of the Big Hoot Ipswich 2022, between June and September next year, 40 ornately decorated owl sculptures, featuring designs celebrating all things Suffolk, will be scattered throughout the town showcasing the wealth of artistic talent of the county and beyond. “We are so pleased to reveal the Big Hoot Ipswich 2022 and hope the whole community is as excited as us with the sculptures,” said Terry Hunt, a trustee at St Elizabeth Hospice. “The inspiration came about as the hospice team felt the popular view of owls being

8

knowledgeable and wise creatures linked to the support St Elizabeth Hospice has provided patients and families since 1989, whilst taking them under the wing of its care. “While Ipswich, where the trail will be held, also has a strong connection with owls courtesy of the popular figures of Mabel and Matilda the tawny owls seen in Christchurch Park for many years. “Similar to our previous Wild in Art trails, we hope the Big Hoot will provide a chance for the hospice to show gratitude to all its supporters, while also providing a much needed tonic of positivity for all.” The Big Hoot Ipswich 2022 will be third art trail brought to Ipswich by St Elizabeth Hospice in partnership with creative producers Wild in Art, following the success of Pigs Gone Wild 2016 and Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk 2019. Both previous trails raised awareness and funds for the hospice as well as encouraging more people to visit Ipswich.

With Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk, and its subsequent statue auction and accompanying fundraising activities, generating more than £260,000 for the hospice. While Pigs Gone Wild is estimated to have brought an extra £1 million to Ipswich’s economy through increased visits and spending in the town, as 250,000 people completed the art trail in the town. Charlie Langhorne, Managing Director and Co-founder of Wild in Art said, “We are proud to continue our partnership with St Elizabeth Hospice and unveil The Big Hoot. It will be an owl-some opportunity for businesses, the creative sector and communities to come together and create something very special for Ipswich next summer.” For more information about Wild in Art 2022 visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/ ipswich-art-trail-2022/

Six in 10 Brits are constantly improving their home and currently have 16 'small' projects on the go, it has emerged. That means more than 435 million home improvement projects are on the agenda across the UK. The kitchen is the room which needs the most attention according to 24 per cent of adults, with nearly half of owners saying it’s the most lived-in room of the house. More than half of those polled said the décor, fixtures and fittings tire quickly due to cooking – and as such worktops, sinks and taps need replacing. One in six adults need to re-do tiling in the kitchen, a fifth want to update appliances such as the oven and dishwasher, while 14 per cent would like to add an ‘ontrend’ colour to the walls. Of the 2,000 homeowners polled an overwhelming 84 per cent

believe tending to little projects around the house can have a big impact on their living space. The study shows Brits are most likely to undertake a new DIY project in the home if they thought it might add value to their property (30 per cent). But 26 per cent would tend to their home if they were hosting for an event or wanted to impress certain people – with friends being those they want to amaze the most. As such, jobs such as repainting a whole room, hanging pictures, and changing blinds and curtains may be done before a dinner party or social gathering. While changing light fixtures, touching up paintwork, re-plastering and cleaning stained walls are all jobs Brits would need to take on before hosting, selling a home or using a room to its full potential. Other

little upgrades needed across the nation’s homes include replacing showers, cracked tiles, door knobs and torn wallpaper. When asked why some little upgrades are still on the to-do list, 36 per cent cite lack of time as the biggest factor, while a further 15 per cent don’t have the confidence to take on the jobs themselves. But the research, conducted via OnePoll, found almost half of those polled often feel relieved when they find the time to take on small DIY projects in the home, while 27 per cent are excited to get them done. Just making a few mini makeovers can help a room feel refreshed according to two thirds of adults, while 32 per cent claim jobs such as applying sealant around tiles or hiding television wires can make a room feel like new.

TOP 20 UPGRADES NEEDED: 1. Re-painting a whole room 11. Replacing torn wallpaper 2. Touching up the paintwork in a room 12. Re-plastering 3. Replacing carpets / flooring 13. Hiding television wires 4. Changing blinds / curtains 14. Putting up shelving 5. Applying sealant around tiles 15. Re-tiling 6. Hanging pictures 16. Replacing a shower 7. Changing light fixtures 17. Replacing door knobs 8. Cleaning stained walls 18. Changing cupboard doors 9. Replacing soft furnishings 19. Replacing cracked tiles 10. Fixing leaky taps 20. Replacing broken toilet seat

How many millennials does it take to change a lightbulb? Millions of millennials admit they can't hang a picture - or even change a LIGHT BULB. The study, which polled 2,000 adults, found putting up wallpaper, bleeding a radiator and painting are also among the DIY tasks 25 to 34 year-olds don’t feel confident doing without help. Tightening a wobbly kitchen cupboard door and fixing a loose screw also emerged among the jobs young adults won’t try without assistance. In fact, this generation even confessed to ignoring a dead light bulb for more than THREE WEEKS before asking someone else to change it for them. Less than a quarter would rate their personal DIY skills as 'good', while 13 per cent confessed their abilities are 'poor'. According to the survey, by Plusnet, a third of millennials will get help on DIY tasks because they aren’t confident in their own ability, while a quarter agreed someone else will do a better job. But a tenth admitted to seeking assistance because they are impatient, while 14 per cent don’t have the time to do it themselves. Dad is the go-to person for two-fifths of 25 to 34-year-olds, while 16 per cent will ask their brother or mum for advice. And as many as 87 per cent will turn to Google for help with these homely tasks. However, 41 per cent are more likely to get a tradesperson in to fix the problem than attempt it themselves. In fact, a quarter would much rather pay someone to do a DIY job than have a go at doing it.

26

As a result, millennials will fork out £320 a year to find a good tradesperson to mend, fix and repair things in their home. But while 15 per cent will choose a tradesman based on value for money, a quarter will pick one based on online reviews. And a third will be put off choosing a particular ‘handy person’ because of a ‘cheap’ looking website, with two-fifths not booking their services if the website didn’t function properly. Three in 10 use social media to source help, with Facebook the top choice above Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn. When asked about the tradespeople they use most regularly, 37 per cent of the millennials polled, via OnePoll, have a plumber handy for frequent household tasks, and 42 per cent said the same about an electrician. As many as 11 per cent reported regular contact with a blind fitter, and 17 per cent are even in touch with a personal decorator. Nick Silverwood, from Plusnet, said, “We know the internet is a powerful tool for business and we wanted to find out the real difference it can make to independent workers. "The results of the survey were incredibly surprising - social media overtaking word of mouth for tradespeople recommendations is a big moment and a fantastic opportunity for tradespeople and all independent businesses to take advantage of social media.”

use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. This unique solution also improves the quality of your grass, benefits root development and helps with stress tolerance; what’s not to love! At this time of year, we also recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing. Let’s create the lawn we both love. Get creative with Ornamental Grasses From dainty Blue Fescue Grass to majestic Miscanthus, ornamental grasses provide texture, character and form unmatched by many other hardy perennials. Their presence develops through the seasons as bright and colourful foliage is joined by graceful swaying flower heads that last well into winter. In large borders grasses can be planted in bold groups or striking drifts, but many varieties perform well in large patio pots, positioned where their individual shape and arching form can be fully appreciated. Popular grasses for pots include compact Blue Fescue Grass and Slender Sweet Flag ‘Ogon', or

taller varieties of Miscanthus such as the Zebra Grass (Miscanthus ‘Zebrinus'). From green to gold, purple to a host of patterned and variegated forms, ornamental grasses come in a wide range of colours, sizes and growing habits. As well as selecting grasses to suit your colour scheme always consider their other qualities, positioning grasses close to paths and seating areas so you can run your hands over their feathery foliage and flowers as you pass. Popular grasses for tactile displays in sensory gardens include the Feathertop Grass (Pennisetum) or annual grasses like Bunny Tails. Taller grasses also add movement to otherwise static displays, catching a summer breeze to add interest and catch the eye. Growing to around two metres in height, the bold form of Golden Oats (Stipa gigantea) is a real showstopper! Or if space allows, try planting a statuesque clump of

Pampas Grass, and enjoy their feathery plumes right into winter. Ornamental grasses offer great value, and these popular Plants of the Moment produce longlasting displays in any garden. Large individuals have a real presence, taking pride of place in beds and borders, while colourful planting combinations can be created with flowering perennials like Black-eyed Susan, Coneflowers and Ice Plants. Top tips for planning and planting 1. Be generous and plant grasses in drifts or bold groups rather than as lonely individuals. 2. Some large potted grasses can be divided into two or three pieces at planting time, each with roots and shoots attached. 3. Grasses grow well in patio pots, but make sure tall varieties are planted in large, heavy pots to prevent them blowing over in strong winds. 4. Line terracotta pots with plastic from old compost bags to help conserve moisture. 5. The tops of some perennial, like miscanthus, die over winter. Promptly cut away all old growth to avoid damaging new shoots that start emerging in early spring. 6. Many ornamental grasses can be raised from seed. Annual grasses like Bunny Tails (Lagurus ovatus), Greater Quaking Grass (Briza maxima), Feathertop (Pennisetum villosum), Purple Millet (Pennisetum ‘Purple Majesty'), and Squirrel Tail Grass (Hordeum jubatum) as well as perennial grasses like Stipa tenuissima can be grown from spring sown seeds. www.hta.org.uk
