The RSPB at Minsmere is now up and running as normal, a superb facility well worth checking out before going on to the coast.

Woodbridge Library hosts historical novelist Rose Gan in May. She is the author of the Penang Chronicles trilogy which charts the life and fascinating career of Woodbridge-born naval captain Francis Light. Francis was brought up in Melton and was educated at Seckford’s School (now Woodbridge School). His subsequent adventures as a naval officer and as a merchant ship’s captain took him from England to India and then to Sumatra, the Straits of Malacca and Siam, through shipwreck, sea battles, pirate raids and tropical disease. His ultimate dream and most difficult challenge was to establish a British port in the Indies on behalf of the East India Company. This he eventually did on Penang Island and the story is told in Dragon, the first book in the Penang Chronicles trilogy. Born in Britain, Rose Gan has divided her life for the past 40 years between the UK and South East Asia.

She has taught history and Latin and has held leading roles in the Indonesian Heritage Society, the Indonesian national museum in Jakarta and the Muzium Negara and the Textile Museum in Kuala Lumpur. Rose is making a special trip to the UK and is visiting Woodbridge Library on Thursday 19th May. The event will begin at 7.30pm. The seat price is £6 which includes a drink and can be reserved at the Library or by phoning 01394 330855. There will be plenty of time to talk to Rose and copies of her book Dragon will be on sale.

The Suffolk Show will return on Tuesday 31st May and Wednesday 1st June to kickstart celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend. In a brand-new one-off exhibit, visitors will be able to walk through 70 years of Suffolk history exploring communications, construction, transport, energy, agriculture, arts and fashion, food and drink, technology, education, sport and many more aspects of daily life through the ages. The Suffolk Show will also be hosting a celebratory Jubilee Pageant with performances from the popular Red Devils – British Army parachute display team. Other new attractions around the Showground include a Superheroes Ring which will shine a light on our county’s emergency services, our real-life heroes and their fantastic blue-light vehicles. This year’s Suffolk Show will see many familiar favourites return for the first time in two years, including free high-energy activities in the Sports Zone, mighty machinery in the Military Zone, hands-on animal experiences in the Farm Discovery Zone, and stunning displays in the Glasswells Flower and Garden Experience. An Evening of Floral Design takes place at the Deben Flower Club on Tuesday 10th May at 7.30pm in Kirton Church Hall, Church Lane, Kirton IP10 0PU. Cheryl Slater from Cheryls Flowers in Sudbury will be showing some fabulous floral designs which will be raffled at the end of the evening. Cheryl specialises in wedding flowers but also designs for any special occasion and has some wonderfully innovative ideas. St Elizabeth Hospice is calling all dog owners and their four-legged friends to take part in the charity’s new fundraising activity, Take My Lead, this May. From dachshunds and dobermans to Labradors and every pooch in between, dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcome to join Take My Lead. Taking place from 10am on 15th May, Take My Lead will give participants the exclusive opportunity to explore the stunning grounds of Woolverstone Hall (WOOFerstone Hall) and surrounding countryside as part of the hospice’s brand new canine challenge. The family-friendly event offers a choice of a 5km or 10km route in the 80 acres of rural parkland overlooking the River Orwell, with the Grade I listed manor house providing a stunning backdrop, and there will be plenty of smells and sniffs to get noses twitching and tails wagging. Refreshments and food will be available to purchase on site and participants are welcome to bring picnics to enjoy on the day.

Tickets cost £10 for one adult and one dog, with £6 per additional adult and £4 per additional dog.

On 10 May, Felixstowe Garden Club members will open their gardens to fellow members to share their love of gardening and design. Last year, eight members opened their gardens, under Covid guidelines, so because of this interest the Club are doing it again this year! So far, they have a small, new perennial garden, a five year work in progress, a mature garden with newly planted gravel area and a garden with no lawn to view. They hope to encourage other members

to open their gardens to share their hints and tips, planting schemes and inspire others to have a go – you don’t even need a garden – a window box or pot is all you need to grow a plant, bulb or vegetable. New era for Bell Hotel Beales Hotels set to take over The Bell Hotel in Saxmundham, launching a new era for the historic hotel.

The Hotel Folk open innovative Training Centre at Thorpeness The Suffolk Hotel Folk group has opened a new training and development centre at Thorpeness, believed to be the first of its type in East Anglia. The centre will provide a safe and welcoming space for the group’s folk to gain a wealth of knowledge and basic skills needed for their roles.

With six individual hotels spread across Suffolk’s coast and country, plus a luxurious spa, golf course and a wedding and entertainment centre, The Hotel Folk are amongst the county’s larger and most important employers. They offer a wide variety of career opportunities for all hospitality roles, from management and top chef positions to front of house bar and restaurant, housekeeping, greenkeeping and spa therapists.

A new Training and Development Manager, Sophie Jeffrey, was appointed to create and run the centre. As well as providing an induction for new folk joining the group, it will become a hub of learning, delivering ongoing training opportunities and support for current folk enabling them to

progress within their roles and chosen career paths, through apprenticeships, a chef academy and a calendar of training workshops.

Facilities at the centre include a bedroom, restaurant and kitchen plus the central training room as well as all hotel IT systems and health and safety, communication skills, restaurant and housekeeping training. There’s also a barista machine to learn how to make the perfect cup of coffee. In addition, the centre will provide a space for hotel managers to step away and bring their team to hold meetings and deliver bespoke training.

Briarbank wins gold

Local, independent brewery, The Briarbank Bar and Brewery in Ipswich has scooped a National Award for their beer Mocha Porter at the recent SIBA National Independent Beer Awards, held in Liverpool in March 2022.

Entered into the category Bottle/ Can Speciality Medium to Dark beers, Mocha Porter is a full-bodied roast porter packed with coffee hits and hints of chocolate and has always been a favourite of the Briarbank’s customers.

The SIBA National Independent Beer Awards are mostly judged by brewers, industry experts and beer journalists and as such, the SIBA Independent

Beer Awards and are very much seen as the prestigious ‘Brewers’ choice Awards’ by the industry. Commenting on their success, Head Brewer at the Briarbank, Robert Lewis-Pyke, “I’m absolutely over the moon that Mocha Porter has won gold in its category at the SIBA National Independent Beer Awards 2022. To go up against seven other gold winners from the 2021 regionals and be awarded gold is amazing.”

But it’s not the only award they have won recently. The Briarbank also entered the SIBA Regional Keg Independent Beer Awards 2022 for the East Region and was announced gold winners in the category

Keg Premium PAs (4.4%-5.4%), with their new beer Suffolk Haze, a pale New England IPA packed with Sabro Cryo hops and Galaxy Hops blend.

Alongside this, their Black Horse Stout took silver in the Keg British Dark Beers Category (up to 4.4%), Mocha Porter gained bronze in Keg Speciality Mid to Dark beers and Hop to It took bronze in the Keg IPA (5.5%-6.4%) category.

Delightful Days Out at Helmingham Hall Gardens

Helmingham and the Tollemache family Helmingham and the Tollemache family have been together for many hundreds of years. The Hall and the old oak trees that stand today have seen much of the history of England pass before them, and many generations of this family. Helmingham Hall was completed in 1510, surrounded by its deep moat, serene gardens and deer park.

Some years after the family moved to Helmingham they started work on the gardens, but old maps and drawings show that the original shape of the main walled garden predates the house by many years; it was most probably of Saxon origin and constructed to protect stock from marauders.

The gardens today have been extensively redesigned by the current Lady Tollemache, a Chelsea Gold Medallist, and are open to visitors who find themselves enchanted by the herbaceous borders, walled kitchen, herb, knot and wild gardens. As well as all of these there are two rose gardens, both formal, but very different in character. The main garden is on the west side of the house and the second garden, to the east side of the house was laid out in 1982. The intention was to create something that was close to the kind of garden the family might have had in Tudor times, but one that would include old,

scented shrub roses. The garden is laid out in a pattern combining the square, circle and the cross of the Helmingham fret in three decorative themes.

Some years later, it looks as if it must have always been there.

Suffolk Walking Festival The 14th Suffolk Walking Festival launches on 14th May 2022 with over 70 guided walks over two weeks over some wild countryside, outstanding landscapes, rolling hills, forests, and coastal beauty spots. With lots of weekend, evening and family walks, the programme has accessible, short, medium, long distance walks, and challenging walks. There is something for everyone!

This year’s programme will discover a dragon in the iconic Stour Valley, explore Hawkedon’s horizons through idyllic green villages, celebrate 75 years at RSPB, one of the most special places in Suffolk, tell stories of smugglers and shipping routes at Dunwich Heath, and spend time watching Sweep the sheepdog, in action managing Orford Ness Nature Reserve’s very own herd of rare breed sheep.

You can tune into bats on a twilight safari through ancient woodland at Priestley Wood, brush up your whittling skills and make damper bread over an open fire in the woods at Thornham Walks, and get crafty at Brandon Country Park finding willow, sticks, leaves and

rushes in the woods to make and keep your own creations.

The festival kicks off at Clare Country Park on Saturday 14th May with refreshments and two Launch Jaunts. It then runs every day until 29th May. Tickets are on sale from early March.

Free music festival for Ipswich A free music festival featuring blues, jazz, world and Caribbean music will be held in Christchurch Park, Ipswich on Saturday 2nd July 2022.

Across five stages will be the BBC’s Young Jazz Musician of the Year Xhosa Cole, Ma Bessie And Her Blues Troupe, blues harmonica maestro Paul Lamb, international soca singer DeeVine, Ipswich born RnB star Chantz Marie, multi-genre band Roots 8, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Drywood Cajun Band as well as local bands.

At this banquet of musical delights there will also be music and dance workshops, a fun-fair and a range

of food and craft stalls. The festival forms part of Ipswich Music Weekend with satellite events in the evening of Saturday 2nd July and Ipswich Music Day the following day, Sunday 3rd July. It’s a spectacular weekend to celebrate summer.

The Ipswich Jazz Festival and Global Rhythm teams have put together this varied musical line up after a successful bid for £42,250 funding by Arts Council England. Along with other support, £33,000 has also been contributed by Ipswich Borough Council to the event.

Cllr Sarah Barber, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Town Centre, says, “I am pleased that we at the Council are involved in this great event. It is wonderful that the Ipswich Music Weekend has returned and with such a broad range of music as this to see. In 1991, Colin and Shirley Aldous, parents of Tarnia Robertson, Ufford Park’s current Managing Director, took over the stalled development of what was to become known as Ufford Park. They invested their own money into the scheme, along with another local entrepreneur, and Ufford Park Hotel opened its doors the following year.

Tarnia Robertson, who has been Managing Director for the past seven years and now heads up a team of up 170 staff in peak months, said: “It seems a long time ago now but for me personally,

the last 7 years have certainly been eventful – we have project managed a huge refurbishment project for all 90 bedrooms, 50 bathrooms and the Park Bar & Restaurant; we were just about to complete our 5 year programme when instead we had to go into survival mode because Covid came along in March 2020 and we had to completely close our doors for the first time since opening!

This of course meant zero income! Thankfully we not only survived but have come out stronger and wiser even though the pandemic is still impacting the business even now and most recently I have had to get the business ready for sale.”

Colin Aldous, Founder and current owner, who learnt to play golf on the Ufford Park site when he retired for the first time as the owner of a local construction company, was captivated by the beautiful contoured countryside and saw potential in developing its 120 acres. He said: “Celebrating 30-years is actually bitter sweet for us as this year we hand over our tenure to a new family to take Ufford Park into the next decade. We are proud of what we have achieved during our time of ownership and do genuinely wish the new owners our very best for the future.”

The landmark anniversary comes as a fond-farewell to the Aldous family, as Ufford Park is currently in the process of being sold to new owners.

UFFORD PARK TIMELINE: 1991: Purchased in 1991 and opened its doors on 9th April 1992 with 25 bedrooms and health club. Named after the historic title “Ufford Park” as illustrated on a Victorian O.S map.

1995: Devasting fire in the swimming pool – rebuilt and reopened within 18 weeks.

1997: 17 further bedrooms added, an enlarged gymnasium extension, plus the creation of a four-million-gallon irrigation reservoir on the golf course, made from recycled tyres.

1998: New al a carte restaurant and meeting room added – The Vista and Waveney.

2003 – 2007: Reconfigured golf course ready for doubling the complex footprint.

2005: Opened 50 additional bedrooms, new hotel and golf receptions, restaurant and bar, two-tier driving range and American Golf Superstore.

2007: Added the Thermal Suite Spa, the first in the local area.

2012: Resigned from Best Western to allow freedom to market, promote and develop own brand.

2015: Colin and Shirley Aldous, Founders and owners, retired from business managing and Tarnia, their daughter, embarked on a managing director role.

2016: Adventure golf arrived in mid-summer – Congo Rapids Lost World. Lots of improvements made; doubling the size of the gym, the Deben Suite bar extended, The Park Restaurant was fully refurbished.

2017: Two thirds of the bedrooms were fully refurbished to a high specification. Celebrated 25 years trading as Ufford Park Ltd.

2018: More bedrooms and the Park Bar & Restaurant were modernised and fully refurbished – new lighting, furniture and dividers.

2019: Completed the final phase of bedrooms and 50 of the bathrooms.

Artists invited to take inspiration from Orford Ness n Artists will get the opportunity to capture a unique corner of Suffolk, as the National Trust Orford Ness announces a collaboration with leading artists to run a series of workshops based at the National Nature Reserve in Suffolk.

Artists have long been inspired by the unique landscape of Orford Ness, with its internationally important vegetated shingle, rare wildlife and a rich history of top-secret military testing providing an evocative setting. Now artists are being invited to let that landscape inspire their work, in a series of events open to artists of all levels of experience.

The programme has been curated by the team at Orford Ness in partnership with three acclaimed locally-based artists and experienced tutors, Susan Barnet, Jane Watt and Caroline Wright. They will be joined by other leading artists to deliver a rich programme of events throughout 2022.

Susan Barnet is course leader for Fine Art at the University of Suffolk and an internationally exhibiting artist from Los Angeles now based in the UK. She has developed research groups such as radical reThink at University of the Arts, London and worked on projects with the Mass Observation Archive.

Jane Watt is Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Suffolk and has been commissioned to develop site-specific installations and commissions in rural and urban environments over the last twenty years. Her collaborative films with

New York-based artist Felicity Faulkner of two east coast lighthouses on Orford Ness, and Montauk Point, Long Island, USA were shown in Venice in 2019. She and Susan have recently made a short film Longshore Drift about the shifting landscape on the Ness commissioned by British Art Network, supported by Pau Mellon Centre for British Studies, Tate and Arts Council England.

Caroline Wright is course leader for Fine Art at the Open College of the Arts and a visual and performance artist based in Suffolk. Caroline led the successful Re-Frame: A Nomadic Response to W.G. Sebald tour at Orford Ness in 2019.

The artists have responded to the National Trust’s theme for 2022 of Creativity and Innovation, creating a portfolio of events that invites artists to explore the varied landscape of Orford Ness in new ways.

Highlights of the season include the opportunity to turn off all digital devices in two workshops and experience the relaxation that creating art provides, a rare opportunity to spend the night on Orford Ness and capture sunrise over Suffolk’s secret coast on paper, as well as the opportunity to learn how to turn drawings into prints.

Artists invited to take inspiration from Orford Ness In other workshops artists will be encouraged to think about the textures found on Orford Ness, turning those textures into a collective collage, and to take a walk with renowned painter Simon Carter as he shares his practice of walking and drawing as a daily activity.

The events give participants the opportunity to experience Orford Ness in a new way, incorporating access to areas normally ‘offlimits’ to the general public. As well as tuition, participants will be able to learn about the rich history that makes this site so special.

For artist Caroline Wright, the landscape of Orford Ness is one that has influenced her own work.

“The unique terrain of Orford Ness, situated twixt the village of Orford and the sea and with its striking and evocative wartime architecture, suggests many narratives and visual imagery at every turn.” she said. “It is a place I have been visiting for many years and one has influenced my art practice and current research into the eroding coast of Suffolk. I am looking forward very much to exploring the Ness with the public during the 2022 programme of workshops and capturing this fascinating site through a series of creative responses.

Orford Ness is also a landscape that inspires fellow workshop leader Susan Barnet. “Orford Ness is the perfect location to capture the ever-changing elements of the famous Suffolk sky,” she explains.

“For me the expanse of sky over the Ness, and the way the weather crosses over it, is what gets me every time I visit.”

Suffolk’s constantly shifting shores provides the inspiration for Jane Watt, “The changing coastal landscape and architecture of the Ness provokes inspiration and awe. I have witnessed it change over the last 10 years as I’ve documented the shift of shoreline and landmarks with students and artist collaborators,” she explains. “I’m looking forward to seeing how workshop participants record their own experience of the Ness through traditional and experimental drawing and painting.”

Glen Pearce, Property Operation Manager for Orford Ness, feels the new events are a welcome addition to the site’s programme. “We know that many artists find inspiration from the mix of landscape and human history here,” he says.

“This programme of art workshops will encourage artists of all levels of experience to be inspired by the Ness and we can’t wait to see what work they produce.”

Discover RSPB Minsmere this Spring Spring at Minsmere is an amazing time to discover the wonderful world of Suffolk’s wildlife, from rare and elusive bitterns to flocks of tits and finches around the bird feeders.

Just like on an African safari, Minsmere has our own Big Five: five key species that visitors like to see. These are avocet, bittern, bearded tit, marsh harrier and red deer. Depending on season, you can add nightingale (spring), adder (spring), Bewick’s swan (winter) and otter (winter) to that list, but with more than 5600 species recorded at Minsmere there’s certain be something of interest.

Of the Big Five, avocets are the easiest to spot, with up to 100 pairs nesting among a large black-headed gull colony on bare shingle islands around the Scrape – a large, shallow

manmade lagoon where hundreds of ducks, gulls, terns and wading birds can be seen.

Avocets are elegant black and white wading birds with a delicate up-curved bill and long blue-grey legs. Extinct as a breeding bird in the UK for 100 years, they returned to nest at Minsmere in 1947. They have subsequently increased in numbers and spread to other parts of the country, but the avocet is still synonymous with Minsmere, Suffolk and RSPB: it is the species used on the RSPB’s logo.

Minsmere’s extensive reedbeds are home to three of the Big Five: bitterns, bearded tits and marsh harriers. All three species owe their continued survival within the UK to Minsmere, and careful habitat management by the RSPB which has helped them to recover from near extinction.

Reedbed wildlife tends to remain hidden deep with the reeds for much of the year, but spring is perhaps the best time to locate the three star species. Marsh harriers are not too difficult to find as they quarter low over the reeds in search of food such as mice and voles. With luck you may spot a male dropping food for his mate, who catches it deftly midair before returning to the nest of hungry chicks.

Bitterns are superbly camouflaged medium sized brown herons. Until mid May you might hear the male’s distinctive deep booming call that carries great distances over the reedbed.

Later, you may be lucky enough to spot a female, as she flies to and from the nest in search of fish for her hungry chicks.

The tiny bearded tits will be feeding chicks too, so spring is a great time to spot them flitting among the reeds. Choose a spot with a good

wide view across the reedbed, sit patiently and listen out for their pinging calls and you may be lucky.

Other reedbed wildlife may also reveal its presence vocally rather than visually. Reed, sedge and Cetti’s warblers, reed buntings and water rails might be heard, but you’ll need a bit of luck to spot an otter – they’re easier to see in winter at Minsmere.

The woodland too is an aural treat in spring as various warblers, finches and tits proclaim their territories and compete for a mate. With luck you may hear a nightingale, though they are reluctant to show their presence, or perhaps even a cuckoo. Be quick though, as both stop singing by June.

Look out in the woodland clearings for signs of our red deer or muntjacs. Autumn is the best time to actually see the deer, although they are present all year. The adders are most active in early spring, but you may still be able to find a female basking in early morning later in spring.

For a delightful taste sensation, don’t forget to visit the cafe, which serves a delicious range of hot and cold meals and snacks. Many of these are homemade using locally sourced ingredients, with the cakes and cheese scones being highly recommended.

Minsmere is open daily, from dawn to dusk. The visitor centre, including shop and cafe, are open from 9am to 5 pm. Entry is free to the visitor centre only, and for RSPB members to the nature trails. Houseproud Brits House proud Brits spend the equivalent of 10 whole days a year – 237 hours cleaning their homes

Inspired by the rise in popularity of cleaning influencers, a study of 2,000 adults found those who clean spend just over four hours a week vacuuming, polishing and wiping down surfaces around the house.

A further hour and 42 minutes a month is taken up with changing bed sheets, cleaning the carpets and cleaning the oven. Almost a third enjoy cleaning because it makes them feel less stressed and 41 per cent like to clean to take their mind off other things. More than half even admitted to cleaning things which don’t need sprucing up, just to alleviate stress or anxiety.

Vacuuming emerged as the most relaxing cleaning task, followed by wiping down kitchen surfaces, and doing the laundry.

A spokesman for floorcare experts Vax, which commissioned the survey, said, “It may seem like it’s only a few minutes here and there, but we really do spend a large amount of time cleaning.

“That’s why we spend hours testing our products and continuously developing them, so when the time comes for you to turn to vacuuming or cleaning your carpets, we’ve got you covered.

“The findings from our survey highlight just how many adults enjoy cleaning, seeing it as a great way to relax and destress.

“We’re firm believers in a cleaner home contributing to a clearer mind and are working with experts to demonstrate the benefits a cleaning routine and tidy home have on your mental health.”

Those polled were found to be so house proud they’ve gone to ‘significant’ lengths to hide imperfections in their homes, with a third admitting to covering carpet stains with furniture. Although 90 per cent clean spillages and unsightly marks as soon as they happen.

More than half of adults keep on top of things by doing regular ‘basic’ cleans - with more than a fifth following up with a deep clean at least once a month.

This leaves 70 per cent feeling satisfied, while 35 per cent feel happy and 28 per cent feel relaxed. Almost four in 10 also said having a — continues overleaf —

clean home instantly makes them feel less stressed, while 37 per cent agree a tidy house equals a tidy mind. For 19 per cent of those polled, via OnePoll, they enjoy it so much, they often find themselves losing track of time when they are cleaning as they get in the zone.

“When order is restored, it makes relaxing in both your body and mind, a much easier scenario.

“Engaging the brain in a repetitive activity such as vacuuming has a calming effect, which helps you deal with stress by giving you a mental break so that you can regroup.

“Cleaning is also a surprising way of getting into a ‘flow state’, when you’re fully absorbed in what you’re doing and time seems to fly by.

“It’s the hugely satisfying state of being ‘in the zone’. You tend to get into flow more easily when it’s clear what needs to be done and you get immediate feedback, such as seeing the spots and stains on the carpet disappear.

“The physical activity of cleaning also releases endorphins and the end result of a cleaner home helps ease stress, reduce anxiety, lifts the mood, and then makes it easier to concentrate.”

It also emerged half of adults listen to music while cleaning to make it as fun as possible, while 15 per cent will dance as they do it. But 26 per cent of adults reckon they have cleaned more often than usual over the last two years due to the pandemic.

A quarter also claimed that cleaning benefits their mental health and wellbeing, with 27 per cent becoming more aware of the perks of cleaning thanks to social media influencers.
