Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts’ A Toast to Hope event will be held on Thursday, October 19th at the Devens Common Center, 31 Andrews Parkway, Devens, MA. The wine, whiskey, craft beer, food & chocolate tasting event is from 6:00 – 8:00 pm and features local distributors, chocolatiers, restaurants and breweries pouring and sharing some of the area’s finest spirits, cuisine, and desserts.

Barry Deitz will entertain us with tales about the region’s spooky writers, from Edgar Allan Poe (born in Boston!) and Nathaniel Hawthorne (creepy Salem!) up to Shirley Jackson

and Stephen King. He will look at classic ghost stories like ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ as well as some legendary ‘true’ haunted places like the Hoosac Tunnel in Western Massachusetts.

Ayer Library Offers Hands-On Pastel Painting Workshop For Adults Ayer Library, located at 26 East Main Street, Ayer, MA, will host award-winning pastel artist Gregory John Maichack’s all-new workshop “Pastel Paint the 45-Million-Dollar Flower” on Saturday, November 4th from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

This pastel painting workshop is designed for sheer beginners to advanced adult artists. The workshop is free but limited to 20 people. Seats will fill quickly, so please call (978) 772-8250 or stop by Ayer Library to preregister.

In this new, highly researched two-hour workshop, participants have fun producing their own pastel painting of Georgia O’Keeffe’s elegant Jimson flower that sold for just short of $45 million. Jimson Weed/White Flower No.1 has been described as a vehicle for pure expression.

Maichack will demonstrate again how beginners to accomplished artists can pastel paint easily using techniques of masters such as O’Keeffe. As always, all participants will keep their pastel paintings.

Maichack’s pastel paintings have been selected twice for the

England Show 2003, and the Savoir-faire Pastel Award from the Great Lakes Pastel Society.

Bruce Rockwell To Speak About Generosity At St. Andrew’s Noted Stewardship Consultant, Bruce Rockwell, will visit St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, October 22. NRWA Leads Guided Walk At Lane Conservation Area Join Al Futterman, Land Programs Director for the Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA), for a guided walk at the beautiful Lane Conservation Area in Lunenburg, MA on Wednesday, October 25, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

The Lane Conservation Area is a 168-acre property purchased by the Town of Lunenburg in Spring 2014. The land includes excellent wildlife habitat, including 1.25 miles of the Mulpus Brook (a cold-water fishery, high-

quality tributary to the Nashua River) which borders the property. The property also provides public access to 458 acres of conservation land in the Town’s “Large Forest” abutting this parcel. The Lane Conservation Area is considered the town’s premier open space area and is managed by the Lunenburg Conservation Commission. The NRWA provided active support for the protection of this property as part of its goal to protect riverside greenway throughout the watershed.

Support Cancer Patients By Giving Blood With The Red Cross During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood to support cancer patients and others.

Mary Alice Donofrio gave blood for the first time in memory of her mother who received several blood transfusions while being treated for breast cancer.

“I had no idea what to expect, but the experience was very easy and quite rewarding. Ever since then, I try and give blood as often as I can, and every time it gives me a good feeling in my heart. It is so nice to know that taking just an hour or so out of my day can help save the lives of others.”

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 1.7 million new cases of cancer are expected in the U.S. this year.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with nearly 253,000 women expected to be diagnosed in 2017. Cancer patients may need blood products during chemotherapy, surgery or

treatment for complications.

Mindfulness Workshops Learn Mindfulness. Learn To Save A Life (NAPSI)—Because 70 percent of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home, learning CPR can mean the life you save may be someone you know and love. Performing CPR can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival.

To help, the American Heart Association offers a simplified version of CPR that encourages even those without formal training to take action. It’s called Hands-Only CPR, and it removes the action of rescue breaths for untrained bystanders.

Hands-Only CPR consists of two simple steps: 1) If you see a teen or adult

“For those who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital, only 10 percent survive—but effective bystander CPR provided immediately after cardiac arrest can double or even triple these chances,” said Dr. Craig Samitt, executive vice president and chief clinical officer at Anthem, Inc. “That’s why, for the past four years, we’ve been working closely with the American Heart Association to help educate people about Hands-Only CPR. To date, we’ve helped to educate and train more than 3 million people in this life-saving skill, with the goal of preparing people to act in an emergency to save the lives of strangers or those they love most.”

With funding from the Anthem Foundation, the American Heart Association created a musicbased training video designed to showcase the simplicity and life-saving benefits of HandsOnly CPR. The video features the unique sounds of the talented a cappella group Street Corner Symphony harmonizing to this iconic song, and challenges everyone to learn how to save a life.
