A Friend In Need A Friend in Need (AFIN) is an arm of the South Acton Congregational Church (SACC) It is a small, all-volunteer organization dedicated to offering financial aid to people in need in the Acton/Boxboro/ Maynard area. A Senior who experienced a medical emergency was left with a portion of an ambulance bill and other post-surgery bills not covered by his insurance. With a limited income, he had no way of covering these

amounts. His advocate contacted A Friend in Need, hoping we would be able to assist and we were able to do so. We were contacted by an advocate for a woman whose daughter has health issues. She is in a daily program and has transportation provided for her. The mother needs to attend family conferences but her car will not pass inspection without new tires. Since she is currently unemployed, she does not have the funds to buy new tires. A Friend in Need was able

Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Anyone in urgent need can be considered for financial assistance by going to a member of the clergy or social service representative and asking them to contact A Friend in Need on their behalf. Work Out! >>> 3 secrets to making morning workouts a reality Routine exercise is one of the keys to a healthy life. When paired with a healthy diet, regular exercise can promote longterm health and reduce a person’s risk for a host of conditions and diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke. While many adults are aware of the importance of routine exercise, finding time to break a sweat can be difficult. In fact, a 2013 study from researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that nearly 80 percent of adults in the United States do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week. (Note: The World Health Organization recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week.) Hectic schedules dominated by obligations to work and family can make it difficult to find time to exercise. But working out in the early morning, before the kids wake up and coworkers’ emails begin flooding your inbox, can help men and women meet the WHO’s recommended exercise guidelines and might even provide a noticeable energy boost throughout the rest of the day. Men and women can expect to run into some obstacles when first establishing a morning workout routine, but a few simple strategies can help make that transition go more smoothly. 1. Prepare the night before. Waking up with a to-do list in the morning takes away from the time you have to exercise. Rather than fumbling for your gym clothes and sneakers in the darkness of your pre-dawn bedroom, lay out your workout gear before

going to bed each night. Lay out your work clothes as well so you spend more time exercising in the morning and less time choosing an outfit. 2. Set your alarm earlier than you intend to wake up. Few people wake up the moment their alarm clocks first go off.Snooze buttons may help you ease into your wakup rotine, but those post-snooze button minutes are minutes you could be spending getting your recommended daily exercise. If you’re a snooze button devotee and you want to be up by 6 a.m., then set your alarm for 5:50 a.m. 3. Get a good night’s sleep. In 2015, the National Sleep Foundation convened experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, geontology and gynecology to reach a consensus on sleep guidelines for people of all ages. The panel recommends adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night, noting that anything less than six hours or more than 10 hours is not recommended. A good night’s sleep will help you feel more energetic when that alarm goes off, even if it is going off before the sun rises. Exercise and sleep go hand in hand, as studies have shown that routine exercise actually improves quality of sleep because exercise is a beeficial stressor to the body, which responds to the stress of exercise by increasing the amount of time the body spends in deep sleep. Many adults struggle to find time for daily exercise, but early morning might be the best time for busy men and women to break a sweat.

3 Benefits Of Core Strength Training In the last decade, chances are strong competitive athletes, weekend warriors and men and women who routinely exercise have heard of workouts touting the benefits of core-strengthening exercises. Those unfamiliar with core training might think it’s just another exercise fad, unaware of the many practical benefits of a strong core. To understand the benefits of core strength training exercise, it first helps to understand what such exercises are and dispel a common misconception about core training. People unfamiliar with core strength training may mistakenly believe it’s merely a way to sculpt toned abdominal muscles. While core training focuses on muscles in the abdomen, it does not do so exclusively. Proper core strength training focuses on the body’s entire core, including the hips, back and chest as well as the abdomen.

The following are three significant ways that athletes and nonathletes alike can benefit from core strength training. 1. Improved balance While working muscles in the hips, abdomen and back, core strength training is training these muscles to function as a more cohesive unit. This can improve balance, which can prove especially beneficial to aging men and women who may feel like they are losing some of their coordination. 2. Uniformity of muscles Men and women who adhere to more traditional strength training workouts may notice certain muscle groups develop more than others, perhaps naturally or because they are willingly or subconsciously focusing on certain areas more than others. For example, a person who enjoys doing bicep curls might develop especially large biceps but may not focus as much on the muscles in his or her back. That can lead to muscular imbal-

ances. Proper core strength training reduces the likelihood of such imbalances because the exercises focus collectively on a group of muscles, training these muscles to work together and developing them at the same pace. 3. Better posture According to the online medical resource WebMD, corestrengthening exercises are the best way for men and women to improve their posture. That’s because some of the muscles worked during core training move the torso by flexing, extending or rotating the spine, while other muscles worked stabilize the pelvis and spine in a natural, neutral position. The Premier Sports and Spine Center notes that some of the benefits of good posture include lower injury risk, better alignment that can lower risk for arthritis and improved muscle health. Core strength training exercises can pay various dividends that greatly improve adults’ overall health.

How Parents Can Get Kids Excited About Brushing Their Teeth Dental hygiene is an important component of a healthy lifestyle, but it’s an element youngsters rarely embrace with open arms. Parents know that getting kids, especially young children, to brush their teeth is not always so easy. In recognition of that, the American Dental Association suggests the following strategies to make brushing teeth something kids will look forward to. • Make it fun. Brushing teeth may not be considered a fun activity, but who’s to say it can’t benefit from a little levity? The ADA recommends turning tooth brushing sessions into dance parties and/or sing-alongs. Youngsters might be so busy cutting a rug or listening to mom and dad belt out a few hits that they don’t even realize they’re cleaning their teeth at the same time. If singing and dancing aren’t cut-

Exploring The Three Main Types Of Skin Cancers Skin cancer is a significant threat that does not discriminate based on age, gender or ethnicity. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. While the incidence rates of skin cancer are alarming, the good news is that skin cancer is highly curable if detected early and treated properly. Adults concerned about the threat posed by skin cancer can take a proactive approach by learning about the three main types of this often preventable disease. Basal cell carcinoma The American Cancer Society notes that roughly eight out of 10 skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas. Basal cells are in the lower part of the epidermis, or skin, which is known as the basal cell layer. Basal cell carcinomas typically develop on the head and neck or other areas of the body that are exposed to the sun. Though they rarely metastasize, basal cell carcinomas can spread to other areas of the body if left untreated. The SCF notes that basal cell carcinomas may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Basal cell carcinomas can be a byproduct of cumulative exposure to the sun or even intense, occasional sun exposure. Squamous cell carcinoma Squamous cell carcinomas most commonly appear on areas of the body that are exposed to the sun, though the SCF notes they also may occur on the mucous membranes and genitals. According to the SCF, in the United States alone, more than one million people each year are diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, which is mainly caused by cumulative sun exposure over the course of a lifetime. Year-round exposure to ultraviolet light and UV rays from the sun, as well as UV exposure

from tanning beds, can take a toll on the skin’s squamous cells over time, ultimately leading to squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinomas may look like scaly red patches, open sores, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. In addition, squamous cell carcinomas may crust or bleed. Melanoma Though they are far less common than basal and squamous cell cancers, melanomas are more likely to grow and metastasize if left untreated. Melanomas develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin calls triggers mutations that cause the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. Ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds is most often the cause of the damage connected to melanomas. Melanomas typically resemble moles, and some may even develop from moles. Melanomas are often black or brown, but the SCF notes that they also may be pink, red, purple, blue, white, or even skin-colored. Early detection of melanoma before it spreads to other parts of the body is essential, as the SCF notes that melanoma is hard to treat and potentially fatal once it has begun to spread. More information about skin cancer and how to prevent it is available at www.skincancer.org.

Why roses are such a must-have on Valentine’s Day Many things are symbolic of Valentine’s Day. In the 1800s, heart-shaped boxes of candy became wildly popular ways for sweethearts to express their affection for each other, and since then they have become one of many symbols of Valentine’s Day. But one such symbol traces its history back even further than that. Roses are now as symbolic of Valentine’s Day as those heart-shaped boxes, and, in fact, have long maintained a connection with feelings of love. The Ancient Greeks and Romans, for example, wore rose garlands during wedding ceremonies. But the practice of giving Valentine’s Day flowers can be traced to King Charles II, who served as King of Sweden from 1809 as well as King of Norway from 1814 until his death in 1818. During his travels, King Charles visited Persia, where he learned about the use of flowers to express certain emotions. Red roses were used to express deep love, and King Charles shared the language of flowers when he returned home to Europe. It soon became quite popular. But Europeans were learning about the symbolic power of flowers even before King Charles’ visit to Persia. In fact, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, the wife of a British ambassador to Turkey, began sharing the practice of assigning meaning to objects via letters she wrote home to England in 1716. Lady Montagu noted how the locals had assigned meaning to various colors, flowers and plants in order to send secret love letters to one another. However, Lady Montagu was incorrect in her interpretation, as historians would later note. Despite her misinterpretations, Lady Montagu’s perception of the flower language would spread, and many people still associate certain flowers with certain emotions. Never is that more apparent than on Valentine’s Day, when red roses remain a popular way for lovers to express their deep love for each other.

Acton Garden Club On February 4th, 2020 at 10:15am the Acton Garden Club will present a program titled “Backyard Carbon Sequestration.” This topic fits nicely with our annual theme of “Ecological Mindfulness.” Our speaker is Mary-Louise (ML) Altobelli of Greenery in Motion. ML will teach us how plants and soil life work together to store carbon below ground. Organic and native plant gardening practices can help mitigate climate change by building and protecting soil health. Come learn how gardeners and landscapers can make a difference in the fight against climate change. For over 20 years ML has been creating and maintaining fine gardens. She brings a strong commitment to creating sustainable soils for healthy people, flowers, trees and grass to all her sites. The program will be held in Acton Town Hall Room 204 and is free and open to the public. The Acton Garden Club is a member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts.

ACTON-CHRYSLER-DODGE JEEP-RAM IS NOW HIRING

2 PART TIME LOT ATTENDANT POSITIONS Clean driving record a MUST. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and every other Saturday and Tuesday, Thursday and every other Saturday.

Leo Male, 10 months old, fluffy black and white cat.

When I first arrived, I shared a cage with Priest and Bernie but they recently got adopted. Fortunately, I was rescued from a PTS situation and fostered by some nice ladies until I could come here. You’ll love me once you meet me. I’ll reach out for when you walk by. When you hold me, I’ll groom your face and purr at the same time. Obviously, I get along with other cats too. I’m one of THE friendliest cats here and I really want a home for the holidays. I’m writing a letter to Santa now – Please find me a loving home with a nice family and a lonely cat looking for a buddy. Hugs & Kisses – Leo. P.S.: I’m at the Pat Brody Shelter. All cats are fixed and up to date on shots. Please visit our website: catsontheweb.org to view all our shelter residents and craft store.
