Slow Metabolism May Indicate Illness Metabolism is a series of chemical reactions responsible for converting food into energy to run cellular processes. These reactions enable people to grow and sustain life effectively. Individuals who are following a dieting and exercise regimen may speak about having fast or slow metabolisms depending on how long they’ve been working toward a goal, and whether or not they have seen measurable results. Even though the speed at which the body metabolizes food is different for every person, sometimes a very sluggish metabolism could be a sign of illness. A diet that has stalled or even led to weight gain can be more than faulty genes. According to experts at the Washington Endocrine Clinic in Washington, D.C., certain underlying illnesses can result in weight gain or difficulty losing weight. Recognizing that a slow metabolism is part of certain conditions, and treating those conditions, can help people regain their energy and start losing weight. • Extra cortisol: If the body has too much cortisol, which is known as “the stress hormone,” it may think it’s under duress and needs extra calories for bodily energy. Normal amounts of cortisol can help burn fat if it is working synergistically with the rest of the chemicals in the body. When there’s too much, calories are hoarded.

friday, january 24, 2020

pg. 9

• Cushing’s disease/syndrome: A similar phenomenon occurs with Cushing’s disease. This is an illness that occurs when there is too much cortisol in the body, according to The Pituitary Society. A tumor of the adrenal glands is sometimes to blame, while in other cases the body just makes too much of the hormone ACTH, which causes cortisol levels to ramp up. Medications to control excessive production of cortisol can help. • Hypothyroidism: With hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, offers the Mayo Clinic. This causes any number of bodily functions to slow down and result in weight gain, fatigue, joint pain, and other symptoms. Supplementation with a synthetic form of thyroid hormone may restore function and enable weight loss. • Low testosterone: This is a condition in which the testes do not produce enough testosterone. It affects nearly 40 percent of men aged 45 and older, says the Cleveland Clinic. Symptoms of low testosterone, such as increased body fat and fatigue, can derail weight loss efforts. Men can undergo testosterone replacement therapy to restore levels. If weight loss has stagnated and it is followed by other symptoms, individuals should make an appointment with their doctors to discover if illness is behind this difficulty.

How parents can get kids excited about brushing their teeth Dental hygiene is an important component of a healthy lifestyle, but it’s an element youngsters rarely embrace with open arms. Parents know that getting kids, especially young children, to brush their teeth is not always so easy. In recognition of that, the American Dental Association suggests the following strategies to make brushing teeth something kids will look forward to. • Make it fun. Brushing teeth may not be considered a fun activity, but who’s to say it can’t benefit from a little levity? The ADA recommends turning tooth brushing sessions into dance parties and/ or sing-alongs. Youngsters might be so busy cutting a rug or listening to mom and dad belt out a few hits that they don’t even realize they’re cleaning their teeth at the same time. If singing and dancing aren’t cutting it, then incorporate another fun activity, like reading a child his or her favorite story, into daily brushing sessions. The ADA advises adults and children to brush their teeth for two

minutes twice a day, so activities need not be too advanced. But a fun activity that allows kids to do something other than brush their teeth can be a great way to help them meet the “two minutes, two times” guideline.

theactionpaper.com • Reward good behavior. Parents can reward youngsters who brush their teeth without incident by offering praise or allowing them to pick a bedtime book when brushing at night. • Put kids’ favorite characters to work. The ADA notes that many popular children’s television shows and books have stories about brushing teeth. Watch these stories with your children, then reference the stories and characters if kids are reluctant to brush their teeth. Parents also can find toothbrushes and/or toothpaste that feature kids’ favorite characters to get youngsters more excited to brush. • Become a storyteller. Parents also can make up their own stories, explaining to kids how they can be superheroes who brush away the bad guys that cause cavities. • Brush alongside your children. Kids love to mimic their parents, so moms and dads can brush alongside their youngsters in the hopes they’ll follow suit. Many children may never jump at the chance to brush their teeth. But parents can employ a few savvy strategies to make daily brushing sessions more fun for youngsters.

How To Avoid Muscle Soreness Muscle soreness can affect people from all walks of life. While exercise enthusiasts who work out several times per week may feel like they should be immune to muscle soreness, this potentially painful condition that can adversely affect quality of life can fell even the most ardent fitness fanatic. Those who find themselves routinely battling muscle soreness can employ the following tactics to feel better and enjoy the fruits of their labors in the gym.

• Listen to your body. Daily exercise can greatly benefit longterm health, but it’s important that men and women listen to their bodies, paying attention to any signs that it might be time for a break. Each person is different, but exercise aficionados who recognize any abnormal signs such as unexplained fatigue or cramps may need to take a day off. Bodies need time to recover after a workout. • Get adequate sleep. Getting enough sleep provides recovery time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. The NSF recommends adults 65 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night. • Don’t overdo it. Pushing a body too hard increases a person’s risk of injury or illness. Muscles that are overtaxed will very likely begin to feel a type of pain known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics, and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them. • Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out. Muscle soreness can be painful and difficult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

Learn About The Causes Of Adult Hearing Loss Hearing loss is quite common and can impact people’s lives in profound ways. Although there are some treatments that can improve one’s ability to hear and communicate, many people are interested in learning about the ways they may be able to prevent hearing loss in the first place. Medical experts from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association advise that hearing loss can be caused by different factors. Learning about these causes can help individuals make smart decisions at a young age to prevent future hearing loss when possible. In certain circumstances, hearing loss may be unavoidable. In such instances, audiologists, or doctors specializing in hearing, can help. Conductive hearing loss Conductive hearing loss refers to problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear and its bones, states the Hearing Loss Association of America. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include: • Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear in which fluid accumulation can interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles. • Impacted earwax also can cause hearing problems. • Fluid in the middle ear may obstruct hearing. • Otosclerosis, which is a middle ear disease, can make it difficult for the tiny bones in the middle ear to move. Surgery can correct the problem. • Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal or middle ear structure can impact hearing as well. Sensorineural hearing loss Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, occurs due to problems of the inner ear. It is often referred to as nerve-related hearing loss.

Did You Know? According to the Department of Health and Human Services, about $117 billion in annual health care costs in the United States is linked to a lack of physical activity. And that burden is not exclusive to the United States, as estimates from the World Health Organization suggest that the global cost of physical inactivity exceeds $54 billion annually. The WHO also notes that, worldwide, one in four adults and, perhaps most alarmingly, three in four adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 do not currently meet the organization’s recommendations for physical activity. That’s unfortunate and potentially dangerous, as a lifestyle that includes routine physical activity has been linked to a number of benefits that can promote both short- and long-term health.

• Aging is a common cause of hearing loss that may not be reversible. Age-related hearing loss is called presbycusis and is marked by muffled or unclear speech. Treatment with assistive hearing devices can help improve hearing. • Trauma to the ear or head may impact hearing. Wearing protective gear during sports or other activities can protect against neurological damage that may cause hearing loss. • Damage to the inner ear can result from prolonged exposure to loud noises, states the Mayo Clinic. These noises cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Using hearing protection and turning down the volume can help. • Ménière’s disease is an inner ear problem of unknown origins. It usually starts in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Dizziness and ringing of the ear are common, and hearing loss comes and goes. Some loss can become permanent.

Dry Eye: More Than A Minor Annoyance (NAPSI)—Approximately 16 million people in the U.S. suffer from dry eye symptoms. So many deal with the burning, irritation and general discomfort that dry eye is one of the top reasons people see their eye doctor. While the symptoms are what patients focus on, what they may not realize is that dry eye can impact vision, both short term and, in some cases, permanently. The tear film protects and perfects the surface of the eye, known as the cornea, which is the first line of focus. When areas of dryness appear, vision can become blurred. Also, dry eye can affect the health of the cornea, which can lead to significant damage and discomfort. “Patients shouldn’t ignore dry eye symptoms or try to manage them on their own. The health of the eye and vision is at stake,” said Stephen Slade, M.D. of Slade & Baker Vision. “It is important that the symptoms be thoroughly evaluated during annual eye exams. Patients should know there have been a lot of advancements in the treatment of dry eye.” During an eye exam, eye doctors evaluate the overall health of the eye, including the cornea as well as the tear ducts and glands that contribute to the tear film. This is particularly important for those wearing contact lenses for vision correction as lens use can contribute to dry eye. In fact, for those who are considering a vision correction procedure, like LASIK, part of the evaluation for candidacy includes a thorough exam of the surface

of the eye and any signs of dry eye. Eye doctors will often prescribe a dry eye treatment regimen to restore the surface of the eye of a patient dealing with dry eye symptoms before recommending laser vision correction. Everyone should have an annual eye exam—particularly if you are having symptoms of dry eye. Why roses are such a must-have on Valentine’s Day Many things are symbolic of Valentine’s Day. In the 1800s, heart-shaped boxes of candy became wildly popular ways for sweethearts to express their affection for each other, and since then they have become one of many symbols of Valentine’s Day. But one such symbol traces its history back even further than that. Roses are now as symbolic of Valentine’s Day as those heart-shaped boxes, and, in fact, have long maintained a connection with feelings of love. The Ancient Greeks and Romans, for example, wore rose garlands during wedding ceremonies. But the practice of giving Valentine’s Day flowers can be traced to King Charles II, who served as King of Sweden from 1809 as well as King of Norway from 1814 until his death in 1818. During his travels, King Charles visited Persia, where he learned about the use of flowers to express certain emotions. Red roses were used to express deep love, and King Charles shared the language of flowers when he returned home to Europe. It soon became quite popular. But Europeans were learning about the symbolic power of flowers even before King Charles’ visit to Persia. In fact, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, the wife of a British ambassador to Turkey, began sharing the practice of assigning meaning to objects via letters she wrote home to England in 1716. Lady Montagu noted how the locals had assigned meaning to various colors, flowers and plants in order to send secret love letters to one another. However, Lady Montagu was incorrect in her interpretation, as historians would later note. Despite her misinterpretations, Lady Montagu’s perception of the flower language would spread, and many people still associate certain flowers with certain emotions. Never is that more apparent than on Valentine’s Day, when red roses remain a popular way for lovers to express their deep love for each other.

“Real Talk About Grief” - FPC Sunday Service There will be some very “Real Talk About Grief” at the Jan. 26 Sunday services at First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC), Unitarian Universalist. Services will take place at 9 and 11 a.m. FPC member Cece Braun has been through a lot of grief in her life. That includes battles with infertility, pregnancy loss, the loss of a beloved pet, the loss of her father, and the biggest so far, the loss of her infant daughter. She often says, “If the only take away I have from these experiences is to help people be better at supporting each other in these times, I’ve done something.” Cece is a self-proclaimed relentless optimist, but watching people pull away when someone is hurting is hard. Walking away from those in pain can cause them more grief and add isolation to the grief. Cece will talk about how to lean into and help a grieving friend and how to ask for help for yourself. There will be a video in the beginning of the service that talks about loss pretty bluntly; the words “baby death,” “violent crime,” “accidents,” “suicides,” and “natural disaster” occur in the first 15 seconds. Cece and FPC minister Rev. Cindy Landrum have reviewed the video and feel that it’s a message that’s okay for all ages, but parents should use their discretion before bringing their children to this service. FPC warmly welcomes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and FREE!

Male, 10 months old, fluffy black and white cat.

When I first arrived, I shared a cage with Priest and Bernie but they recently got adopted. Fortunately, I was rescued from a PTS situation and fostered by some nice ladies until I could come here. You’ll love me once you meet me. I’ll reach out for when you walk by. When you hold me, I’ll groom your face and purr at the same time. Obviously, I get along with other cats too. I’m one of THE friendliest cats here and I really want a home for the holidays. I’m writing a letter to Santa now – Please find me a loving home with a nice family and a lonely cat looking for a buddy. Hugs & Kisses – Leo. P.S.: I’m at the Pat Brody Shelter. All cats are fixed and up to date on shots. Please visit our website: catsontheweb.org to view all our shelter residents and craft store.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
