theactionpaper.com 2 is resting and vice versa. Each team member runs 3 times. Total distance per runner ranges from approximately 12 to 21 miles with each run averaging between 3 and 12 miles. Runners can look at leg distances and choose the distance that is appropriate for their running level. To run for SMILE Mass, each runner must raise $1300. In exchange for raising money for SMILE Mass, runners will receive in return: SMILE Mass will cover the cost of registration (bib numbers), rent the vans, provide all safety equipment needed, provide 3 t-shirts or tank tops and 1 long sleeved shirt, rent hotel rooms at approximately the half-way point for teams to have a quick nap and a shower. This is a really fun event and I even did it in 2014, so beginner runners have time to train and be successful! If an individual is willing to captain a team, meaning you will recruit a team of 11 additional runners, the team captain can skip fundraising. If one person does not take on the task of recruiting the team and it is a collaborative effort creating the team, then everyone is fundraising. Each team will raise over $14,000. Your team can decide which SMILE Mass project receives the proceeds raised by your team. If an overnight relay is not of interest, SMILE Mass is also seeking runners for the 7-mile Falmouth Road Race. This race takes place on August 16th, 2020. The fundraising commitment for this race is $1000 per runner. In exchange, SMILE Mass will pay the registration fee, provide a running t-shirt or tank top and host an after party at Soprano’s Casino by the Sea right next to the finish line with food and non-alcoholic beverages. If runners would like SMILE Mass to reserve a hotel room the night before the race, the fundraising commitment is $1500.

Healthy Eyes Begin With Sun Protection When it comes to conditions caused by harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun, individuals are quick to mention skin cancer. However, it’s important to note that the eyes are delicate organs which are also very susceptible to sun damage. UV rays are high-energy, invisible rays of light. These rays can warm up the planet and promote life. However, they can also be detrimental to areas of the body when overexposure occurs. When absorbed by the eyes, UV rays can create eye ailments or contribute to existing conditions. One of the common side effects of too much eye exposure to UV rays is retinal damage. To understand the damage, one must first understand the role the retina plays in the eye. The retina is responsible for taking the light and shadows the eye “sees” and converting this information into the electrical impulses that are sent to the brain to form the “picture” in front of us. The retina is sort of the film inside of a camera. The macula is the most sensitive part of the retina. It is responsible for the fine detail we see. Without the macula, the images from our eyes would be blurry. When the eyes are damaged from the sun, the retina can be compromised. Depending upon the damage, vision may become blurred or distorted. Vision loss may also occur. Retinal damage isn’t the only damage that can occur from sun exposure. Cataracts, the result of gradually accumulating damage to the proteins of the lens, can also be caused by sun damage. This is often the case when UV exposure occurs from an early age. Pterygium, or tissue growth on the whites of the eyes that can compromise vision, may also occur from UV exposure. When it comes to cancer, many believe that melanoma of the skin is the only reaction to UV rays. However, although rare, melanoma can also occur in the eyes. The best way to prevent sun-related eye damage is to stay out of the sun. Naturally this is not possible at all times. In these cases,

sunglasses that offer at least 95 percent UV (blocking UVA and UVB radiation) protection are vital to eye health. Also, choose a tint on the sunglasses that blocks 80 percent of transmissible light, but no more than 90 to 92 percent of light, say eye experts. Look for lenses that block visible blue light and are large and closely fitted to the face. One safety warning to heed, especially when purchasing sunglasses for children, is to skip ordinary sunglasses that have no UV protection. The dark lenses may actually enable the eye’s pupil to dilate and let in more harmful UV radiation.

Did You Know? According to the Department of Health and Human Services, about $117 billion in annual health care costs in the United States is linked to a lack of physical activity. And that burden is not exclusive to the United States, as estimates from the World Health Organization suggest that the global cost of physical inactivity exceeds $54 billion annually. The WHO also notes that, worldwide, one in four adults and, perhaps most alarmingly, three in four adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 do not currently meet the organization’s recommendations for physical activity. That’s unfortunate and potentially dangerous, as a lifestyle that includes routine physical activity has been linked to a number of benefits that can promote both short- and long-term health.

How To Keep Back Pain At Bay Back pain is a part of life for many people. The American Chiropractic Association says 31 million Americans experience low back pain at any given time, and experts estimate that up to 80 percent of the population will experience back pain at some point in their lives. WebMD says back pain is the second most common reason people visit the doctor. Back pain can take on various forms, ranging from a dull ache to a sharp pain. Some may experience intermittent back pain, while others may have chronic back pain. The causes can be considerable, from injury to underlying medical conditions. Alleviating back pain — or preventing it in the first place — involves understanding the common causes and taking appropriate actions.

pg. 7

• Maintain proper posture. Slouching over computers or looking down at phones while texting may be doing damage to the back. Work ergonomically and take breaks to stretch. Sit up straight in chairs and try to keep a straight back while walking as well. • Shed some pounds. Extra pounds at the midsection can shift the center of gravity and put strain on the lower back, advises WebMD. Try to stay within a range of 5-10 pounds of your ideal weight. • Don’t smoke. The Arthritis Foundation says research shows a high prevalence of spinal stenosis and back pain among smokers. It is believed that smoking can damage blood vessels that supply blood to the back. Smoking is also bad for the bones and is a risk factor for osteoporosis.

• Try exercise. Routine exercise is not guaranteed to eliminate back pain, but it can make it less frequent, advises doctors at Harvard Medical School. Low back pain due to muscle strain or muscle spasm can be tamed by exercise. Yoga, or a similar stretch-based exercise, can be very effective at alleviating back pain. Yoga relaxes muscle tension and expands range of motion in the joints. It also can build muscle strength.

• Try a different sleeping position. Talk with a doctor about the best position for sleeping to ease up back pain. It may include being on your side with knees pulled up, or placing a pillow under your knees if you’re a backsleeper. • Lift cautiously. Always bend at the knees and use the legs to lift items. This can help you avoid straining your back. Back pain can be overwhelming, but with some strategies a person can reduce his or her propensity for pain.

Why roses are such a must-have on Valentine’s Day Many things are symbolic of Valentine’s Day. In the 1800s, heart-shaped boxes of candy became wildly popular ways for sweethearts to express their affection for each other, and since then they have become one of many symbols of Valentine’s Day. But one such symbol traces its history back even further than that. Roses are now as symbolic of Valentine’s Day as those heart-shaped boxes, and, in fact, have long maintained a connection with feelings of love. The Ancient Greeks and Romans, for example, wore rose garlands during wedding ceremonies. But the practice of giving Valentine’s Day flowers can be traced to King Charles II, who served as King of Sweden from 1809 as well as King of Norway from 1814 until his death in 1818. During his travels, King Charles visited Persia, where he learned about the use of flowers to express certain emotions. Red roses were used to express deep love, and King Charles shared the language of flowers when he returned home to Europe. It soon became quite popular. But Europeans were learning about the symbolic power of flowers even before King Charles’ visit to Persia. In fact, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, the wife of a British ambassador to Turkey, began sharing the practice of assigning meaning to objects via letters she wrote home to England in 1716. Lady Montagu noted how the locals had assigned meaning to various colors, flowers and plants in order to send secret love letters to one another. However, Lady Montagu was incorrect in her interpretation, as historians would later note. Despite her misinterpretations, Lady Montagu’s perception of the flower language would spread, and many people still associate certain flowers with certain emotions. Never is that more apparent than on Valentine’s Day, when red roses remain a popular way for lovers to express their deep love for each other.

Presbyterian Church In Sudbury(PCIS) 330 Concord Road, Sudbury Phone: 978-443-9151 Pastor: Rev Desiree Lawson Sunday Service hours: 10:30am-11:30am Adult Education: 9:00am-10:20am Sermon Title: “Work out the Plan” Scripture: Phillippians Chapter 2: 1-13 Date: 1/26 /2020 Description: God’s plan for humanity can feel confusing, overwhelming, out of reach and not very lucrative. God’s instructions for us are usually in direct conflict with what our society values. Therefore, if we choose to follow God, we then consequently live counter-culturally. We do the unpopular thing and begin to distance ourselves from traditions and values; and even friends and family who have made alternate choices. Future Events: Sunday Adult Education 9:00 - 10:20 a.m. in the Chapel How did you first learn the Gospel message? The chances are you heard it, from a relative, a friend, a preacher, or perhaps a Sunday school teacher. Someone told you. Great Conversation! Grow in Your Faith! No preparation is necessary. Everyone is welcome! The class provides opportunities for attendees to delve into the sermon-based scripture each week. Leader: Ron Tenhove Wednesday Women Bible Study Every Week, 9:45 - 11:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall We have begun our year-long Kerygma study on Discovering the Bible. This will take us topically through both the Old and New Testaments. Study guides are available from Jean Olson at a cost of $32 each. Payment can subsidized or be made in smaller amounts over time for those who wish to do so. Commitment to the entire study is not essential; we welcome women who just wish to join us for the shortterm. Leader: Jessie Robinson. PCIS Book Club Friday, January 31, 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel Our next book is The Alchemist by Paolo Cuelho.

This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and soulstirring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried near the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles in his path. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasure found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts. Jessie Robinson will lead the discussion on January 31 at 7:30 p.m.

OPEN YOUR HOME TO A LOVING COMPANION

Leo Male, 10 months old, fluffy black and white cat.

When I first arrived, I shared a cage with Priest and Bernie but they recently got adopted. Fortunately, I was rescued from a PTS situation and fostered by some nice ladies until I could come here. You’ll love me once you meet me. I’ll reach out for when you walk by. When you hold me, I’ll groom your face and purr at the same time. Obviously, I get along with other cats too. I’m one of THE friendliest cats here and I really want a home for the holidays. I’m writing a letter to Santa now – Please find me a loving home with a nice family and a lonely cat looking for a buddy. Hugs & Kisses – Leo. P.S.: I’m at the Pat Brody Shelter. All cats are fixed and up to date on shots. Please visit our website: catsontheweb.org to view all our shelter residents and craft store.
