Training -What to Expect

There is a 30-day "Check Us Out" period. During this time, you will receive basic instruction and opportunities to see if you are a good fit for the Above the Rest team and if the Above the Rest team is a good fit for you. At the end of 30 days, if either of us does not believe it is a good fit, then we will part our ways on good terms. Your first day at the studio will include hands-on learning on our procedures and techniques. You will: -Learn how to properly inflate balloons using our inflation equipment. -Spend time tying balloons with the goal of getting them tied faster each time. Don’t worry, we know you won’t get it right the first time. We know it takes time. Be patient with yourself--we will be. -Have hands-on training that will continue throughout your employment with Above the Rest. Much of the training will arise on an as-needed basis and often while we are on a job site. Learn about various shop maintenance and organization tasks. -Be asked to read “The Above the Rest Staff Guide," "The Big Book of Balloon Decorator Lingo," our "How to Manual," and the "Fabric Draping Guide." -Be tested on the material in these handbooks. Tests may include verbal or written questions. -Be asked to sign off that you have read, understand and agree to the policies.

A Little Bit of History Above the Rest Balloon & Event Designs came to life in 2006 by founder, Dianna Glandon, CBA. Dianna was teaching public school and serving as Student Council advisor when she was introduced to the joy of balloons. She hired a professional balloon decorator to decorate a Student Council convention that she and her students were planning. After the event, she told the decorator, "Your job has to be so fun." He responded, "Well, why don't you buy my business?" At first, it seemed a very silly thought....but it didn't go away.

Long story short, after some diligent research and ensuing educatins and training, Dianna took a leap of faith to begin Above the Rest. The company has allowed her to use her creativity, attention to detail, and her desire to create joyful memories for clients.

Within a short time, sales grew and a second milestone was reached which was contracting additional design team members to help serve the growing client base.

Since then, the business has grown steadily, serving clients from many large-scale organizations and businesses within the East Tennessee community, with the University of Tennessee being a predominate repeat client. Above the Rest also provides balloon design services to individual clients for special occasions and family events. The repeat large scale customers and customized individual delivery line has provided Above the Rest with substantial sales revenue growth. ATR also offers "Balloons from the Heart"©™ as bring joy to families personal celebrations (birthdays, babies, and such) for the Blue Grass Community, college students and senior citizens.

In addition to creating award-winning balloon designs, the team has been specializing in fabric draping for over a decade. They use luxury fabric to create stunning draping designs that are very popular in area venues.

6 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Work Hours & Getting Paid Work Hours As a special event decor company, we serve our clients when their events occur. That means we sometimes start as early as 6 a.m., other times 11 a.m., and yet other times we start later in the afternoon. Regular weekday hours are 10-4, but can be adjusted according to need and staff availablity. Weekend hours vary completely according to scheduled events. All work schedules are subject to change on an as-needed basis due to clients calling for decor at last minute. Sometimes we work late at night to breakdown events--like after 10 p.m. and other times we do breakdowns in the middle of the day. The Party Crashers typically do breakdowns. Other staff members are sometimes asked to do breakdowns. Team members can be sent messages asking if they are available to work at certain events. They may say "yes" or "no" without impacting their employment. Payment for those extra hours are paid at regular rate. Bonus pay is sometimes offered.

How often do I get paid? Automatic deposits are made on the 15th and last day of each month. In order to receive pay check for each period, hours are turned in twice a month: By the 13th 2 days before last day of month Worked hours are verified again the When I Work ap. 1099 Contract workers receive handwritten checks every other week or at end of fill-in event service.

If you’re too early, you will be unable to clock in and manual adjustments will be made. If you have questions, see the When I Work tutorial videos online.

This is the toolbar where you can navigate through the app located at the bottom of your screen.

This is what your dashboard will look like when you have a shift scheduled. Notice the "Clock In" button that you must click at the start of your shift.

This is the Toolbox where you can see the details of your account.

Lateness, Absence, Mistakes Lateness It is expected that team members will arrive to work at scheduled times. Being late to job sites is unacceptable as we are normally on a tight time frame to get event decor installed. Please be on time. Work time paid does NOT begin until team member arrives at studio or venue, is inside venue or shop ready to work, and clocks in to When I Work.

Absence Your presence is important at all times, but especially on job set days. Emergencies and Illness happen. We know that. Team members are to notify office in the event an unexpected absence arises.

Safety at the StudioOur studio is not open to the public. Clients are seen by appointment only. When working at the studio, especially if by yourself, keep the doors locked.

Keep the floor space as open as possible. When a lot of decor is being built and waiting delivery, bag and move decor out into the garage or stack as close to walls as possible.

A company apron is to be worn and used to hold scissors and other supplies.

Scissors may be worn on a lanyard and around the neck if scissors are in a safety sheath. DO NOT stick scissors in a front pocket of pants.

When loading base plates, be careful to keep fingers out of the way to avoid smashing them.

Always bend knees when lifting base plates and other heavy items. Do not bend at the waist to pick up any items.

36 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Studio Safety Cords are to be placed close to work counters and must be taped down if they are in a walkway.

37 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Job Site Safety Think Safety First and in all situations.

On Job Sites-

To avoid creating a trip hazard, stage items against a wall that is away from traffic of event staff and guests but also in a convenient location working. Lay all poles flat on the floor/ground out of traffic. Do NOT lean poles up against the wall. Bend knees when lifting base plates and other heavy items. Do NOT bend at the waist to pick up items. When loading base plates, be careful to keep fingers out of the way to avoid smashing them.

Ladders: When using a ladder, be sure that all legs of ladder are placed flat and level on floor/ground. Test that ladder is level before climbing. NEVER stand on the top of the ladder. When one person is on a ladder, another person is to hold the ladder.

Scissors Lift Operation: ~ All crew members must receive & pass certified scissor lift training before operating any and all lifts. ~Safety harness must be worn while on scissor lift. ~Driver is to operate lift following standard safety guidelines. ~Drive slowly and carefully. ~Be sure all sides of lift are clear before moving lift in any direction. ~Continually look in all directions above and around lift to ensure nothing will be hit. ~ NEVER lean or stretch over the side of the lift. ~ ALWAYS plug scissor lift into electric power source after use and return to where you found it. Ceiling Décor: ~Do not jerk magnets from ceiling. Remove gently with the corkscrew on the Mag Pole. ~When removing décor from ceiling using the Mag Pole, slowly lower the pole straight down to floor. ~Watch for people or tables/chairs in vicinity of ceiling décor. ~Cut magnet off the line and place in the proper size marked bins to return to the shop. Helium Tank Safety Helium Tanks are green.

NEVER, NEVER inhale helium. It can cause death. In Studio: 1. Helium tank is to be chained into helium tank carts (green) when tanks are in use and when being moved. 2. Helium tanks not in use are to be stored along wall, in garage, or at end of work counter. Tanks at end of work counter are to touch counter. 3. Helium tanks are to be moved only when chained into the helium tank cart.

Moving Tanks at Shop: 1. To move cart, check that tank is chained into cart. 2. TWO people are ALWAYS to move a helium tank down the steps. 3.

Use both hands. Slowly & carefully tilt cart back keeping elbows bent.

4. Push cart forward to move. 5. NEVER pull tank backwards down steps. Tank must be in front. 6. Moving tank down steps requires TWO people at all times. 7. Both people are to hold tank cart and slowly push cart forward. Upon reaching step, continue tight hold, contract ab muscles, bend knees, and keep elbows bent, flexing biceps to control tank down the steps. 8. REPEAT for each step until reaching sidewalk.

39 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Helium Tank Safety Removing Helium Tank from Van: 1. Requires TWO people at ALL times, NO EXCEPTIONS. 2. PARK ON LEVEL GROUND. 3. Remove green cart from top of helium tank. 4. Remove safety straps from around tank. 5. Place green cart approximately 12-15” from back of van with platform facing van. 6. One person climbs into van. Other stays outside van at back of van. 7. Inside person crouches on knees and carefully slides tank toward back of van, while outside person CAREFULLY lifts tank bottom over lip of van. 8. Once tank clears van lip, inside person pushes tank towards rear of van until tank is almost half way out of van. 9. Outside person guides and supports tank with hands. Inside person climbs out of van to assist. 10. BOTH people stand on opposite sides of tank, keeping both hands on tank, bend knees. 11. One hand of each person is on bottom of tank. 12. SLOWLY slide tank toward ground, supporting tank weight with knees and hands. Once tank edge touches ground, stand tank up supporting top of tank and stand upright onto cart. 13. Secure cart with chain, while one person is holding cart and tank. 14. Roll tank into venue using both hands. One person holds door open while other pushes tank.

40 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Helium Tank Safety Lifting Tank into Van at Studio: 1. Requires TWO people at all times! 2. TOP OF TANK ALWAYS GOES IN FIRST! 3. Open van doors completely. 4. Keep tank on cart and move to about 12” from back of van. 5. One person is to stand on left of tank, one on the right of tank. (Stand with your strongest side away from the van) 6. Unchain cart so tank is free from cart. 7. Keep both hands on cart to be sure it is stable. 8. Together, slowly tip top of helium tank towards back of van bumper until tank rests securely on bumper. 9. One person stabilizes tank while other moves cart away from bottom of tank. 10. After cart is out of the way, one person stands on left of tank, other stands on right of tank. 11. Both bend knees. DO NOT BEND FROM WAIST. 12. Place hand that is closest to van near top of tank, place hand closest to bottom of tank on edge of tank’s bottom edge. 13. Keep knees bent, pull in abdomen muscles, VERBALLY count to 3. 14. On 3, both people lift bottom of tank, placing one knee under tank for support. 15. Slide into van. 16. Slide in only as far as needed to clear black of van door. 17. Lift green cart onto top of helium tank keeping wheels up and close to van doors. 18. Secure tank to van wall with one or two bungee cords.

41 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

On Site Helium Tank Safety Use of Helium Tank at a Venue: Keep helium tank secured to green cart with chain. Whenever possible, place tank behind work table or up against wall. In the event that more than one tank is needed inside, one tank is to lie flat on ground with the other chained to cart. NEVER keep a tank upright inside a venue without being secured to cart – Fire Marshall can impose a big fine for unsecured helium tank.

NEVER, EVER allow anyone at venue to inhale helium!

42 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Outside Venue Safety Outside Venue Safety: Notify all staff members and owner if you have an allergy to bee, wasp or other insect bites. Bring appropriate Epi-pens or other items needed to counteract a sting in event of sting— show another staff member on site how to operate item.

All ladders are to be placed firmly and flatly on ground. A second staff member is to hold ladder while one person is on ladder. (See Ladder Safety) Do NOT stand on top of ladder.

Only one person on a ladder at a time, indoors or outdoors.

In case of lightning storms, all staff members are to take inside cover and stop décor installation until storm passes.

Pay attention to ground area for installation to watch for holes and other items that may cause tripping or injury.

The 10 Job Processing Steps All event jobs have a color-coded event folder. Blue for balloon jobs. Pink for weddings or fabric draping. Each folder has Client's name, event date, and location written on outside. Recipes (instruction guides) are fastened on the right side of folder. Sometimes there are several recipes. Carefully READ EACH recipe before building. Sometimes more than one person is working on the same event. Decide which person is doing each portion. Then start. Pull out balloons needed for job and place on counter.

Start a "Travel/To Go" bin, which is a clear plastic bin. Size needed will depend on the amount of balloons and supplies needed for the event. Sometimes there are several "Travel" boxes. Use duct tape and marker to put event name on bin. After using balloons need in recipes, put a FULL bag of the same balloons inside the box. DO NOT JUST PUT IN A FEW BALLOONS. Once recipe is complete, use green highlighter to write "Finished" across recipe. If stopped in process, write "finished" only on completed portions and leave post it note for next person.

Finished

Bag each inflated item as directed on Recipe. Store bagged items in garage as much as possible. If full, store along workroom walls, then fabric room, then kitchen trying to keep work space as clear as possible. After inflating all recipes, carefully READ the Pre-Event Checklist. Get out and pack each item on the list. Initial the "Packed" column after each item is packed. Place packed bins on counter for outgoing events. Assist loading vehicles as needed to prepare for the event.

We DO NOT leave any balloons, ribbons, parts of balloons, plastic bags, or anything related to our décor at the venue. Inspect the venue to be sure that all items brought in have been used or removed.

49 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Loading the Van It is essential that the van be loaded in a neat and orderly fashion. PLEASE DO NOT just throw items into the van. Follow procedure below: Ladders: Attach 8’ ladder on the left wall of the van with safety cord. Attach 6’ ladder on the right side wall with safety cord. DO NOT throw ladders on top of other items.

Poles: Load poles in before loading other items. Place all poles on the left side of the van in gorilla bags. EMT Poles: Place on the left side of the van. Uprights & Crossbars: Put the extending end (sliding) of uprights (top) and crossbars into van first. ALWAYS put these poles on the left side of the van.

Base Plates: Stack base plates vertically and leaned up against the right side of the back of the van. Lean up as straight as possible. To keep them from falling, place a large heavy object in front of base plates. Carpet Squares: Put in almost last. Stack on top of the plastic bins. Nipples/Extenders: Place all 2’ nipples/extenders in the white PVC storage units which are located on left rear of van. Sort by size. ¾” in PVC marked ¾”, ½” in PVC marked ½”. Place one foot nipples/extenders in the red and black metal storage containers which are in van. Pins for Fabric Base Plates: These are either 6” or 16” pins. Either put the 6” pins in their labeled storage bin; OR if there are only a few pins, place them in ONE of the fabric bins at one end of the bin. Be sure pins are visible if placed in fabric bin. Fabric Bins: Carefully stack all fabric bins on the right side of van, pushing bins as far forward as possible. Stack bins 2-3 bins high. If only a few bins are being used, spread bins out across van floor instead of stacking them up high to avoid the bins falling over in transport. 50

Loading the Van Tool Box: Place black tool box behind the passenger’s side seat with handle closest to seat wall.

Red Dolly: Slide the red dolly platform UNDER the tool box. Dolly is to stand up vertically at all times. Bungee the dolly to the cab divider.

Zip Tie Plastic Bin: This bin sits on van floor behind driver's seat.

Extension Cords (black): Wrap extension cords in a figure 8 or “cowboy lasso” around arm. Wrap the last 1’ around center of cord and then plug the extension cord into itself. Place all BLACK cords in the bottom of the tool box unless given different directions.

Extension Cords (white): Wrap extension cords in a figure 8 or “cowboy lasso” around arm. Wrap the last 1’ around center of cord and then plug the extension cord into itself. Place WHITE cords in their designated plastic bin or in the maroon suitcase.

Magnets (small & large): Separate the two sizes and put in the small labeled plastic boxes that are located in the tool box.

Scissors: 5 pair of scissors are to remain in the van at all times. Store scissors on the back door of the van using a magnet.

Fabric Bins – Leave all fabric bins in van that will need to be taken back to breakdown event unless it is wet or supposed to rain before next day.Return any unused fabric bins to the Fabric Room and place the bins in their assigned places, as labeled. If base pins are in the fabric bin, please remove from bin and store in proper location in the garage.

Inflation Equipment – Always bring in all inflation equipment no matter what weather is. Pins for Fabric Base Plates – Store on the metal shelf immediately to the left of the uprights & cross bars in garage. The shelf is labeled “Pins.” Ladders – Store 10’ ladder on its side and parallel to the blue table which is in the garage along the house wall. Push the ladder all the way toward the back wall so it is not in the walkway.

Introduction should be: “Hello, I am …. With Above the Rest Balloons (or Above the Rest Event Designs). We are here to breakdown the (name of event) event. Would you like us to start now, or do we need to wait a few minutes?” Sometimes this is not necessary and will depend greatly upon the venue, client, and event. Instructions will be given in advance as much as possible.

Sometimes the dolly and other equipment is unloaded and brought into venue via service elevators before seeing client or event contact. Other times you will consult client or event contact before entering building/location.

54 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Unload Supplies from Vehicle to Bring into Event

1. Unload all necessary supplies from vehicle (see Event Breakdown Checklist).

2. Use red dolly to transport items into venue. Some items will need to be carried.

6. Carry all ladders parallel to the ground. Carefully carry ladders through doors and elevators to keep them from hitting door, door jams, and walls.

55 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Giving Away Balloons What to do if someone asks to take balloons home. It is likely that people will request to take some décor home. Always be kind and give them the item(s) with the reminder that balloons will need to go home with them and not left at venue. Be sure to get parent approval before giving balloons to children.

NEVER give away helium filled décor in venues with high ceilings (Convention Center, Expo Center, The Venue, Lighthouse) DO NOT give away our heavy metal base plates or framing. It's okay to give away the wood base plates.

56 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Pull Up Banners

How to Remove Pull up Banners (if any are present): 1. It is essential to SLOWLY lower the sign down toward the metal box. 2. DO NOT let the top of the sign go all the way down into the metal box. 3. Hold top of sign above the slot and tie a 260 around both ends of sign to keep the sign top from slipping into the metal box. 4. Place lowered banner into black cloth storage bag. 5. Put black storage bag on ceiling of little van on right side by sliding door.

57 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

How to Pop Balloons How to Pop Balloons General Directions: Follow for all events 1. Locate a trash can prior to popping balloons. 2. All balloons are to be popped directly into trash cans for efficiency. 3. DO NOT pop balloons directly on floor except in rare circumstances. 4. In the event that several guests are still present, use scissors to cut necks of balloons near tie point to avoid creating loud popping sounds. 5. If no guests remain, popping should be done with “balloon popper,” scissors tip, knife, or pin. Please respect the venue staff too and pop quietly--some are very afraid of the popping sound. 6. Pay attention to keep from striking your hand with implement or coming into contact with other people. 7. Inspect the space around trash can and/or where balloons are popped and pick up any balloon parts “guts” that are on the floor. 8. Also inspect walls as sometimes balloons will stick on walls.

58 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Remove Air-Filled Decor How to Remove Air-filled Balloon Columns, Arches, Sculptures, Walls & Other Floor Decor: 1. Pull balloons off the support pole(s) and carry to trash can to pop balloons. (See instructions on previous page for How to Pop Balloons.) 2. Remove nipple extenders from metal base plates. 3. Dispose of ceiling décor as directed on “Event Breakdown Checklist.”

59 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Remove Classic Arches Classic Arches: Typically takes 2 people, one on each side, but can be done with one person. 1. Slide hand into the arch to grab the pole in both a high and low place. 2. One person should be the lead and tell other when to lift. 3. Lift framing up together at same time to lift it off of the support poles. 4. Once lifted off poles, the arch will want to spring outwards. 5. Hold onto the framing tightly to keep it from springing out. 6. Walk arch apart and lay on ground/floor. 7. Pull balloons off of framing. They will come off in one unit unless the 260 breaks. Pop balloons directly into a trash can. 8. Untape the joints in the arch PVC poles. 9. Toss any duct tape in trash. 10. Pull PVC poles apart by twisting in opposite directions. 11. Lay PVC aside. 12. If short EMT is stuck inside bottom of PVC, pull it out of the PVC. 13. Place popped balloons in trash can or into a large plastic bag.

61 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Remove Helium Decor How to Remove Helium-Filled Décor General Rules Helium-filled décor requires special treatment in order to keep balloons from rising to ceiling. NEVER release helium balloons in rooms or outside. In some venues there is a $200 per balloon charge for balloons that go to the ceiling. DO NOT release outside it's an environmental concern. NEVER inhale helium or allow anyone else to do so. Helium is a gas that reduces the ability to breathe as it constricts air passages. People have died from a short exposure to helium. If people ask for helium balloons, please kindly explain the dangers of helium.

Removing 3’ Helium-filled balloons 1. DO NOT pop the balloon as it makes a very loud sound and scares people. 2. Use scissors to gently and slowly cut the balloon very close to the nozzle knot to slowly release helium. 3. After the balloon is down, cut ribbon off close to weight. 4. Return the weight/base to studio.

62 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Remove Helium Decor How to remove 11” or 16” helium-filled balloon bouquets: 1. People may take bouquets, that’s okay—less to do for you. Remind them to not release balloons to ceiling or inhale helium. 2. If people are still at the event, see popping instructions on previous page. 3. If guests are gone, take balloons to a trash can and pop directly over the trash can. DO NOT cut or release them from ribbons. 4. After balloons are popped, cut the ribbon close to weight. Toss ribbons in trash can. 5. Return the weight/base to the studio.

63 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Remove Helium Decor Leaping Arches or other Linked Balloon helium-filled Décor: 1. There is a mono-line (security line) tied in between each linked balloon. 2. DO NOT cut the mono line. 3. Use scissors to gently and slowly snip each balloon close to the nozzle or tail end (tie points) if people are around, if you are at the airport, or if you are at another venue where loud sounds shouldn't be made. 4. Helium will release slowly. 5. Proceed to next balloon as helium is releasing from other balloon to snip each one. 6. After balloon deflates, cut off the sand weight. 7. Return the sand weight to the studio. Put popped balloons and mono in trash.

Remove Helium Decor How to Remove Classic Helium Arches: These arches have a lot of lift. It is easy for them to get away from you. These are typically used only outside. NOTE: We don’t do these very often. It can take 2 people to breakdown.

1. Detach or cut one end of the arch and leave the other end secured as long as possible. 2. Pop one quad at a time, being careful to not let the balloons float away. (Once 2 balloons are popped in a quad, it is easy for the other 2 to slip away. Pop quickly.) 3. When you cannot reach any more balloons, then cut other end of arch and pop remaining balloons. Throw away all popped balloons and parts.

Inspect Before Leaving Venue 1. Prior to leaving the space/event venue, inspect the entire room(s) where the décor was and where items were popped. 2. Pick up any and all balloon parts, including small parts. 3. We DO NOT leave any balloons, ribbons, parts of balloons, plastic bags, or anything related to our décor in the venue. 4. Inspect the venue to be sure that all the base plates, poles, and other framing, fabric, lighting and power cords have been removed. 5. Follow checklist to know what will return to the studio and be sure they are in van.

Load Van

Please follow the same Loading Van instructions as described under "Installing Decor" in this manual, Step 5. 68 It is our mission to provide moments of joy and smiles to all we serve with grace and gratitude.

Unload Van at Studio When returning to the studio, please do the following: (Exception: If it is storming, leave items in van, just not fabric) Balloons – Put all inflated balloons on the garage floor. Put any dead balloons in trash. Base plates – Store base plates in their assigned locations immediately to the right of the garage door. Carpet Squares – Store gray carpet squares on the top of shelving unit located to the left of garage door. Fabric bins – Take all fabric bins into the Fabric Room and place the bins in their assigned places. If base pins are in the fabric bin, please remove from bin and store in proper location in the garage. Framing – Store White and Gray (usually covered with duct tape) PVC 10’ framing on the wall closest to the main house. There are brackets on the wall for placing the poles; and they are marked by size. Only 10’ PVC & EMT go in this location. Ladders – Store 10’ ladder on its side and parallel to the blue table which is in the garage along the house wall. Push the ladder all the way toward the back wall so it is not in the walkway. If there are two 8’ ladders in the van during breakdown, remove one and place it parallel to the 10’ ladder. Pins for fabric base plates – Store on the metal shelf immediately to the left of the uprights & cross bars in garage. The shelf is labeled “Pins.” Poles – Store poles in their assigned locations in the cinder blocks that are just past the base plates. These are marked by diameter, type of pole and length. Store accordingly. Uprights & Crossbars – Store uprights & cross bars in their assigned places immediately to the left of garage door. Store these with extending end facing up.
