Message from The President

Past ABFAS President’s messages have focused on change. Change in our board name, change in the delivery of examinations, and how we constantly change in an effort to improve the exams. And while none of this could have been accomplished without the work provided by our podiatric colleagues, I would like to focus on the “now.” As it has been said, tomorrow is promised to no one.

In today’s world, it has become too easy to sit behind a computer, tablet, or phone and complain about how this or that didn’t go one’s way. In addition, our culture of instant gratification and everyone gets a trophy often allows us to forget what it means to take responsibility, either personally or as an organization. Often, the difficult part is inward reflection as, “It’s easy to blame others for your situation. It’s more productive to search inside yourself for the answers” – Dave Ramsey. Being a total brat as a kid, my parents would often say that the world is not always fair, but I would need to learn to deal with it and continue to work hard, implying that it is easy to criticize and complain but much more difficult to do so constructively.

And while unfortunate that we are attacked, demeaned, or have complaints filed against us by our patients and other specialties, it is truly heartbreaking when the same comes from our own colleagues. I have a true love for this profession and have spent the better part of almost 20 years trying to improve upon its shortcomings. This profession has provided me with unbelievable lifelong friends and colleagues and instead of berating each other or the profession, I would hope that we can all take a step back from our busy lives to appreciate what we have beyond the day-to-day. As the cliché goes - nobody has ever been on their deathbed saying “I wish I could have worked more.”

As we move into a new year, I encourage each of us to think about our own contributions to our profession. What can we do to ensure that new generations will want to enter the field? How do we demonstrate our respect for the profession?

At ABFAS we are working collaboratively to strengthen our profession, while respecting our overall mission to protect the public. We have already provided $50,000 and have made an additional $250,000 commitment over the next 5 years to support APMA’s student recruiting 2

efforts. In addition, as highlighted in this newsletter, we grant $2,000 on an annual basis to top students in each of our podiatric colleges for the Michael L. Stone award which recognizes their outstanding academic and professional conduct. Finally, we work with ACFAS visiting colleges to discuss our pride in being DPMs while giving workshops to help with students’ knowledge and skills.

ABFAS wants to ensure the podiatric profession is strong for the future. We are assisting the Joint Task Force of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Podiatric Surgeons as they work to enact state and federal policy initiatives that are of mutual benefit to podiatric and orthopaedic surgeons and their patients. In proving that they care about the profession, our volunteer network of 134 DPMs across the country work to ensure our exams maintain high standards.

Finally, we listen to you. We have changed our board certification requirements reducing the Danny J.by Choung, DPM number of exams and their associated costs both in dollars and in practice time. We are also in the process of developing a new approach to recertification and are instituting a Case Review appeals policy.

In the end, we are a very small community. And while it is OK (and healthy) to disagree, there is always a way to do it with respect and level of compromise that can lead to a benefit of the majority.

NEW APPROACHES Over the next few years, ABFAS, its diplomates, and those seeking ABFAS certification will experience many changes to the ABFAS certification and recertification processes. Why so many changes so quickly you may ask? Simple. We have listened to your concerns about the ABFAS certification process and are addressing them, while maintaining the quality and credibility of the ABFAS certification standards.

Up first are the 2020 changes to the In-training, Qualification, and Certification exams.

September 2020 is the kick-off to the new ABFAS In-training exam (ITE). First and second year residents (and third year residents for those in 4-year residency programs) will take separate foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle (RRA) surgery didactic (80 items) and CBPS exams (8 cases). September 2020 will also see the first of the new final year residency exams.

Those in their final year of residency will take an 80 item didactic exam and the NEW 12 case CBPS exam which we offer for both Foot and RRA. Residents who pass any component of their final year ITE will be able to use their passed exam for ABFAS board qualification purposes.

There is a $300 board qualification fee for each exam that they use, but the overall cost of becoming qualified is much less expensive with this new design.

Those already qualified and seeking certification may also see changes to their process, depending on when they became qualified. For those board qualified candidates who took the current 8 case CBPS qualification exam (those qualified before fall 2020), it’s still a two exam process to become board certified. They will still need to take and pass Case Review and another CBPS exam, the NEW CBPS exam, in order to become board certified. That’s because the 8 case CBPS qualification exam that they originally passed is not the psychometric equivalent of the NEW CBPS exam.

Those who become board qualified upon passing either the final residency year ITE exam or the Part I didactic exam along with the NEW CBPS examinations will need to pass only Case Review to become board certified. Just think, one less exam to become board certified! Two fewer exams if you are pursuing foot surgery and RRA surgery certification.

A bigger philosophical change is reflected in the proposed Continuous Certification process that will replace the Recertification and SAE exams. Although the ABFAS Board and the Continuous Certification Task Force are still in the development process, this new approach has much promise. The ABFAS Board sees certification as a two-step process. The first, initial certification, primarily serves the public as it’s setting the standard for protection of public health. After initial certification, the Board sees its role as two-fold – continuing to protect public health AND serving the needs of ABFAS diplomates who have already met the certification standards. Following the lead of many allopathic boards, ABFAS is developing a longitudinal assessment, or continuous certification model. This new model will identify knowledge gaps among diplomates, as a group and as individuals, and provide targeted educational opportunities. The new process will provide a more relevant and personalized approach to a diplomate’s lifelong learning.

More than 73% of you who responded to our survey support the proposed change. And with 540 of you volunteering to help us pilot the new approach, we’ll be working quickly to develop it. We promise to keep you informed of the details as we go through the development process.

This may be a good time to say, when I graduated from NYCPM, I thought I knew podiatric medicine and surgery, but it wasn’t until I began my intensive study for my ABFAS boards that I truly became accomplished. I know there is some ongoing debate over the value of surgical board certification at the moment, but I can say without hesitation becoming board certified in surgery has unequivocally made me a better podiatrist in every way, not just surgically. There was never one moment I felt it was anything but the best investment I could ever make in my profession.

ABFAS WELCOMES NEWLY ELECTED OFFICIALS Congratulations and welcome to the three new members of the ABFAS Board of Directors; William R. Adams, DPM, (incumbent) Michelle L. Butterworth, DPM, and Amberly C. Paradoa, DPM, (incumbent).

Drs. Adams and Paradoa were re-elected to second three-year terms, while Dr. Butterworth was elected to a new three-year term. All three directors bring a tremendous wealth of strategic knowledge and experience to the board.

Michelle L. Butterworth, DPM, has been actively involved with ABFAS having served on numerous committees since 2013. She has served on the Communications and Cognitive Examinations Committees, as well as the Online Study Guide and Bylaws Task Forces. She currently is a member of the Exam Blueprint Task Force and serves as a Case Reviewer. In addition, she is a Past-President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) and continues as a member of the Professional Relations Committee, in addition to lecturing and reviewing Journal articles for the college. Locally, Dr. Butterworth is a Past-President of the South Carolina Podiatric Medical Association and the Chairman of the South Carolina Annual Conference. Nationally, she was active on the Legislative Committee that played a key role in South Carolina practitioners gaining ankle privileges. Dr. Butterworth is the Treasurer of the Podiatry Institute, a member of the PICA Claims Committee, and serves on the Board of the American Academy of Foot and Ankle Osteosynthesis.

ABFAS’ Board of Directors has elected new officers, who started their terms on September 1, 2019.

Keith L. Jacobson, DPM – President. Dr. Jacobson specializes in trauma and reconstruction of the foot and ankle in adults and children. He has served as an ABFAS oral examiner and chaired the Foot CBPS Examination Committee. Dr. Jacobson also served on the ACFAS Surgical Skills Committee while participating as a clinical instructor/lecturer for many of the college’s courses. He also serves as a case reviewer.

William R. Adams, DPM – President–Elect. Dr. Adams has been actively involved with ABFAS since 2007. He has served as an oral examiner from 2007 to 2014 and has been on the Cognitive Examination Committee, and the Foot CBPS Examination Committee. Dr. Adams serves as the Examinations Committee Chair and as a case reviewer.

Amberly C. Paradoa, DPM – Secretary/Treasurer. Dr. Paradoa has volunteered on numerous ABFAS committees and task forces since 2012. She has served on the Cognitive Examinations, CBPS Review, and Strategic Planning Committees, as well as the Online Study Guide Task Force.

Dr. Paradoa also serves as a case reviewer.

Danny J. Choung, DPM – Immediate Past-President. Dr. Choung has served on several committees, including the Item Writing Committee, the RRA Surgery Oral Examination Committee, the RRA CBPS Committee and as a case reviewer and oral examiner. Dr. Choung serves on the Exam Oversight and Nominating Committees and the Continuous Certification Task Force.

Matthew E. Williams, DPM, ended his term as Immediate Past-President in August. ABFAS thanks Dr. Williams for his work with the Board. Dr. Williams has served on various ABFAS committees including the Examinations Committee, RRA Oral Committee and as an oral examiner. Today, Dr. Williams serves on the CBPS Committee and as a case reviewer.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ABFAS - Kathy Kreiter, Executive Director

One of the best parts of my job is the opportunity to listen to candidates and diplomates talk about ABFAS. The recent survey that we sent out resulted in many email and phone discussions with so many of you. It’s interesting to hear what people think about ABFAS and unfortunately, there is some misinformation out there. The annual newsletter is a great place to set the record straight, so this article will focus on two topics – certification requirements for those “pre-91” diplomates who take the self-assessment exam, and the history behind ABFAS’ reconstructive rearfoot and ankle certification. Or in other words, why we have pre-91 diplomates.

Self-assessment Exam Those who became ABFAS board certified prior to 1991 do need to take an exam every ten years, just like those post-91 diplomates who have to take the recertification exam. Pre-91 diplomates have the same opportunity as those recertifying to take the exam in their 8th, 9th, or 10th year. The exam contains 125 didactic questions that cover both foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery. Those who take the exam receive a score report showing the results of their exam, similar to the report that those who recertify receive. And the pre-91 diplomates also need to meet the licensing, hospital privileges, and CE requirements as the post-91 diplomates. The difference between the self-assessment exam (SAE) and the recertification exams is that there isn’t a pass/fail tied to the SAE exam. If, however, a pre91 diplomate does not take the exam within the required timeline, they are not compliant with ABFAS policy. When an insurance company or hospital asks for a verification of a pre91 diplomate that did not take the exam, the report will show the status of Certified: Not Compliant with ABFAS MOC requirements.

RRA Certification In the late 1980’s, the Board of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (now known as ABFAS) began discussions on how to address concerns they had heard from many DPMs who were unable to certify because of their state’s limitations on scope of practice. ABPS’ certification was in foot and ankle surgery. At that time, many states did not include ankle surgery in their scope of practice laws. In addition, many residency programs were only one-year in length and did not train rearfoot surgery. The DPMs in question had competency in forefoot surgery but did not do rearfoot surgery and wanted to obtain board certification.

The ABPS Board decided to separate the existing foot and ankle surgical certification into two categories – foot surgery, and foot plus reconstructive rearfoot/ankle – to address the need.

ABPS went through an extensive stakeholder process, including taking the proposal to the HOD in August 1988. It also had its membership approve the necessary bylaw revisions to make the new certification requirements effective in 1991. On August 31, 1989, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) approved the bylaw change. Their approval document also included information about the Blue Ribbon Panel’s recommendations, which the HOD accepted, addressing that board certification should address “areas of specialization” rather than “areas of sub-specialization” as podiatric medicine is a profession and not a specialty. The separation of ABPS’ certification into two categories fits within that recommendation as neither foot surgery nor ankle surgery are subspecialties but are categories within the surgical specialty.

2019 MICHAEL L. STONE AWARD RECIPIENTS ABFAS awarded nine graduating students the 2019 Michael L. Stone, DPM, Outstanding Professional Conduct Award. Each awardee, determined by the professors and fellow students at their respective podiatric medical colleges, is “the individual who exemplifies the highest standard of professionalism, deportment, and ethics in their interactions with peers, professors, and staff.” The recipients receive a plaque and a cash award of $2,000 to be used at the student’s discretion. ABFAS presented the awards in February 2019, at the ABFAS annual meeting in New Orleans, LA.

Ryan Lerch – Arizona School of Podiatric Medicine at Midwestern University Growing up in a small blue-collar town in Colorado, Ryan Lerch learned to appreciate the tireless work ethic his family exhibited and learned at very young age what it was going to take to make it as a physician. Completing a Bachelor of Science at Colorado State University-Pueblo was not without struggles as Ryan worked 3 jobs at a time while also fulfilling a competitive resume. Once enrolled at the Midwestern University, Ryan strived to continue his work ethic and generating a competitive Curriculum Vitae. This included a high ranking, competitive GPA, numerous hours of community service, Pi Delta Candidate, APMA Student Scholarship Recipient, and Earl G. Kaplan Scholarship Recipient. Ryan participated in 3 research projects including a Case Report which was awarded 2nd place at the ACFAS Scientific Conference. While at Midwestern University, Ryan served as Journal Club President, Liaison to the Minorities in Medicine Club, AZAPMSA student chapter Treasurer, Class Representative, and Introduction to Surgery Teaching Assistant.

Elizabeth Ansert – Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine Elizabeth Ansert pursued a number of degrees and careers before starting her podiatric journey. She has completed her Master of Arts in forensic psychology and criminal profiling, served as a police officer, and worked as a psychological therapist for children, teens, and families. Once at Barry University, she devoted a large amount of her time to leadership and community outreach. She volunteered on two overseas medical missions, and organized and volunteered at homeless healthcare clinics and food drives in the Miami area. In addition, she founded the Forensic Podiatry Club at Barry University, served as President of ACFAS’ Barry University student chapter, and was Vice President for the Podiatric Medical Missions Club and Journal Club. Finally, she has pursued her interests in several fields, including forensic podiatry and surgical technique, through conducting and publishing research. She hopes to continue pursuing medical missions, research, and leadership throughout her career. Outside of podiatry, Elizabeth enjoys traveling to new cuisine destinations, painting, reading, and learning to drum.

Nassim Tabrizi – California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University (CPSM) Bay Area native Nassim Tabrizi graduated with highest honors in Neuroscience at the University of California in Santa Cruz. During her undergraduate career, she embarked on a medical mission trip to Central America, providing care to rural communities. Early into podiatry school, she spearheaded an event at her alma mater to promote podiatry education and awareness. Since then, she has served as Class Secretary for three years, working to address important student issues and organizing events. As Vice President, she has also played an essential role in growing her school’s Podopediatrics Club, including organizing clubfoot workshops. Academically, Nassim received multiple merit-based scholarships while becoming a member of the Epsilon chapter of the Pi Delta National Honor Society. In the future, she hopes to continue medical mission work and give back to podiatry through academia. Outside of school, she enjoys traveling and scuba diving.

Jeanne Mirbey – Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (DMU CPMS) Jeanne Mirbey was born and raised in Dijon, France, and moved to the United States to obtain her undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Bryn Mawr College, PA. She discovered her passion for foot and ankle surgery after volunteering in a multidisciplinary hospital and working for her father, an orthopedic surgeon, in France. While at the DMU CPMS, Jeanne was a member of the Iota Chapter of the Pi Delta National Honor Society. She was awarded the CPMS Merit Scholarship for her academic achievement for all four years at Des Moines University and has earned Excellence Awards as the top performing student in the basic science disciplines of Gross Anatomy and Lower Limb Anatomy. Jeanne has worked as a Teaching Assistant in the subject of Clinical Medicine and has been involved in multiple research projects on campus. She has presented at APMA National Scientific Meetings, Heartland Foot and Ankle Scientific Conferences, and DMU Research Symposiums. Jeanne co-authored the study, “Measuring Student Confidence in Clinical Training Through Self-Assessment,” published in the Journal of Health Science and Education.

Bethany Hine – Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS) Bethany Hine earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Hamlin University in St. Paul, Minnesota. During her time at Scholl College, she excelled academically and earned the Scholl Foundation Scholarship, APMA Educational Foundation Scholarship, and the Ronald A. Sage Honorary Scholarship. Bethany’s dedication to the college has been evident in her leadership roles as the Scholl College Student Council Academic Vice President and the Scholl Capstone Designated Student Leader.

In those roles, she has been given significant responsibilities and has executed them in a collaborative, professional, and respectful manner while earning the respect of her peers and Scholl College faculty members. Bethany has also dedicated her talents and time to volunteering for several worthy causes throughout the Chicagoland area. She is a thoughtful, productive, and well-rounded individual, always willing to lend assistance wherever and whenever needed.

Chandler Ligas – Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM) Prior to attending KSUCPM, Chandler worked as a medical assistant in a podiatric clinic where he quickly learned that this was the field of medicine that he wanted to be a part of. As a student at KSUCPM, Chandler was involved as an Anatomy Teaching Assistant, as the OPMSA president, Phi Delta Inductee, and participated in research studies. Chandler helped investigate: “The Lapidus Arthrodesis: Examining the Effect of the Metatarsal Base Transfixion Screw” which was a cadaveric study. This same study was selected as a Manuscript Presentation at the APMA National Conference in 2018 and received second place accolades. Chandler’s biggest accomplishment as a student was spearheading the first annual Alumni Student Weekend with the help of the Office of Advancement and the OPMSA Board. Chandler looks forward to becoming a well-rounded podiatrist, with the ability to teach in the future.

Caroline Tippett – New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) Caroline is a North Carolina native who received a BS in Biology at UNC-Wilmington. She became interested in podiatry during her freshman year of undergraduate school and her excitement about being a podiatric physician has been ever evolving. At NYCPM, Caroline was the Honor Council Representative, a Student Ambassador, and President of the Physicians for Human Rights Club. She was a tutor for multiple subjects and published in two editions of NYCPM’s Podiatric Medical Review Journal. She volunteers weekly at a nonprofit which caters to elderly homebound individuals. Her future goals include teaching at a residency program, being a contributing member of ACFAS, and continuing to serve the geriatric community. Outside of podiatry, she enjoys exploring outdoors, trying new restaurants, volleyball, and NFL Sundays.

Lauren Christie – Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) Lauren Christie was drawn to the podiatric field after sustaining a sports related injury, inspiring her to become an expert in the lower extremity to help individuals return to activities in which they are passionate about. Academically, she is in the top of her class and has a strong interest in research, motivated to learn as much as she possibly can. She recently presented a poster entitled “The Role of Tinea Pedis and Onychomycosis Prevention in Diabetic Education: A Literature Review” and placed third at the 2018 APMA Annual Scientific Conference. At TUSPM, she has enjoyed being Student Government Association Treasurer, serving as a Student Ambassador, and volunteering at the Penn Relays, Marine Corps Marathon, and Special Olympics. In addition, Lauren has been awarded various scholarships, selected as TUSPM Student of the Month on numerous occasions, and is a Pi Delta Honor Society Candidate.

Jeffrey Sanker – Western University of Health Sciences, College of Podiatric Medicine Jeffrey Sanker’s first steps toward a career in podiatric medicine occurred at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he joined Happy Feet Clinic. The student-run clinic provides free foot care to underserved, homeless populations on Skid Row and throughout Los Angeles county. Jeffrey continued his involvement into podiatric medical school, where he engaged in additional communitybased initiatives, such as the Pomona Health Action Team and Special Olympics. He has served as a student ambassador, national APMSA delegate, and liaison to the American Public Health Association.

Advocating for podiatric health concerns on Capitol Hill, he assisted the APMA at legislative conferences and is a member of the Committee to End Health Care Disparities. Jeffrey has received multiple meritbased scholarships, research grants, and was inducted to the Lambda chapter of the Pi Delta Honor Society.

ABFAS EXAMINATIONS PASSING RATES ABFAS offers certification exams twice a year – in the spring and in the fall. The spring exams include the Part I Board Qualification Didactic and CBPS, Part II Board Certification CBPS and Case Review, and for those already certified, the Recertification and Self-assessment exams. In the Fall, ABFAS offers the In-training and Part I Board Qualification Didactic and CBPS exams.

ABFAS is committed to helping candidates be successful. This past year, we continued to add additional exam preparation tools for candidates. Candidates will find educational materials on the ABFAS.org website. Here you can choose from videos, podcasts, practice exams, and certification documents that outline how to be successful for each exam. ABFAS will be adding new exam preparation content in 2020, including webinars and podcasts.

Fall 2018 Board Qualification Exams The passing rates for fall exam candidates are traditionally low, as most of these candidates have failed a previous exam – usually the past spring. In 2018, there were a large number of candidates who had finished a less than 3-year residency program and who were trying for the last time to become Board Qualified before the 2018 deadline. For Fall 2018, the pass rate for the Part I Foot Surgery Didactic exam was 46% and the Part I Foot Surgery CBPS exam was 39%. The Part I RRA Surgery Didactic exam pass rate was 26% and Part I RRA Surgery CBPS exam was 41%.

Spring 2019 Board Qualification Exams The majority of spring candidates are taking Part I Qualification exams in their final year of residency and for the first time. The spring pool of candidates has historically had higher success in passing the Part I exams.

The Spring Part I Foot Surgery Didactic exam saw a 77% pass rate and the Part I Foot Surgery CBPS exam had an 81% pass rate. The pass rates for the Part I RRA Surgery Didactic exam and Part I RRA Surgery CBPS exam were 59% and 69%, respectively.

Spring 2019 Board Certification Exams Spring Part II Foot surgery pass rates were 58% for Case Review and 61% for the CBPS, while Part II RRA surgery exams had a 55% pass rate for Case Review and a 61% pass rate for the CBPS exams.

Spring 2019 Recertification Exams ABFAS Recertification exams continue to have a high pass rate, with Foot Surgery at 91% and RRA Surgery at 84%. Diplomates who are unsuccessful at this exam, usually pass on their second try. As Diplomates have three years to attempt to pass the recertification exams, we find that by the end of the 3-year period, the overall passing rate is over 99% for both Foot Surgery Recertification and RRA Surgery Recertification.

NEW NEWS! ABFAS Simplifies Recertification Registration Case log requirements for the upcoming 2020 Foot and RRA Recertification Examinations have changed. You no longer have to upload case logs before taking the recertification exams. You simply have to attest that you have performed foot and ankle surgery within the past two years at the time of exam registration. While ABFAS no longer requires the uploading of the case logs at registration, we do reserve the right to audit case logs on randomly selected candidates.

New Find a Surgeon Feature Highlights DPM’s Certification ABFAS enhanced the Find a Surgeon feature on ABFAS.org. Now, patients searching for ABFAS Board Certified DPMs will be able to see which certification type doctors have. Please log into your profile and update your Directory Address fields with your office address, telephone number, and website URL in order to be featured on Find a Surgeon.

To update your profile, sign in to the ABFAS website with your ABFAS username and password.

Self-assessment Dates Have Been Added to Your Personal Profile For those pre-1991 Diplomates who maintain certification and take the ABFAS Self-assessment exam, your next Self-assessment date, original certification date, and prior Self-assessment date are part of your online personal profile.

You will find your Self-assessment information on the “Pre-91 Diplomates” tab under the “Certification Information” box.

Verification of Surgical Privileges In order to become board certified, as well as a condition for maintenance of certification, ABFAS requires official documentation of active surgical privileges at either a hospital or surgical center, consistent with the area of certification desired (Foot Surgery and/or Foot and Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery).

To assist members with providing such documentation, ABFAS provides a sample template privileges letter that you can give to your hospital/surgical center. To download the sample template privileges letter, go to ABFAS.org/privileges. The letter must be on letterhead, completed and signed by a medical staff representative and sent to ABFAS in order to meet the privileges documentation requirements.

Once ABFAS receives the signed letter, we will update your record. You will be able to see the list of facilities on your online profile.

VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME: CPME AND ABFAS ARE LOOKING FOR CREC RESIDENCY EVALUATORS The Council on Podiatric Medical Education’s (CPME) Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee (CREC) is seeking ABFAS Diplomates for appointments as residency program onsite evaluators.

CREC is a collaborative group, made up of ABFAS Diplomates and its Executive Director, American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) Diplomates and its Executive Director, and CPME program staff, that oversees the selection, training, and assessment of podiatric residency onsite evaluators.

CREC is looking for nominees who have experience as a program director or faculty in a CPMEapproved residency program. The ability to travel and knowledge of PRR and CPME document 320 are critical to the position.

The ABFAS Board of Directors will submit volunteers’ names to CREC for approval. Those successful individuals will represent ABFAS when serving on CPME on-site evaluation teams.

CPME Statement ABFAS is the only foot and ankle surgery certification board recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education through the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards.

The American Podiatric Medical Association delegated responsibility to recognize specialty certifying boards in podiatry to the Council.
