celebrating 50 years OF COMMUNITY, COMPETENCE, AND CARE A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Serving this community as an educator, AO course developer, chair of the ACFAS Annual Meeting, and now as your president has been both meaningful and inspiring. As we mark 50 years of ABFAS, I am especially grateful for the volunteers, Diplomates, and candidates who carry forward our shared commitment to patient-centered surgical excellence.
My principal focus has been, and will remain, strengthening the value and credibility of ABFAS certification — not only for our Diplomates and candidates, but ultimately for the patients who trust us. Our past leaders have worked hard to build a strong foundation. My role is to preserve that legacy while helping to guide ABFAS into the future and its continued growth.
I strongly support the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) and the excellent job they do in safeguarding the standards of our profession. It is vital that ABFAS continues to protect its standing as the only Foot and Ankle Surgery Certification Board recognized by CPME through the Specialty Boards Recognition Committee (SBRC). This recognition reflects the trust placed in ABFAS to uphold rigorous standards in surgical certification. Preserving this distinction is central to maintaining the integrity of our profession and ensuring that patients can rely on the qualifications of ABFAS-certified surgeons.
Looking ahead to the next 50 years means embracing innovation. Imagine the future of surgery — shaped by advances in AI, robotics, imaging, and diagnostics. Each will play a role in how we operate and how we assess surgical competence. At ABFAS, we are committed to adapting to these changes while never losing sight of our core mission: safeguarding public health and well-being by certifying and continuously assessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of podiatric surgeons to ensure excellence in surgical care.
To stay true to that commitment, ABFAS will continue to provide meaningful modernized certification pathways that reflect real world surgical practice. We support surgeons through life-long learning opportunities and create systems that help patients easily recognize ABFAS certified surgeons as providers of the highest standard in care.
Students and residents represent the future of our profession. Through strengthened partnerships, program visits, and enhanced exam preparation resources, we are ensuring they have the tools and mentorship needed to succeed in the certification journey.
Additionally, we are exploring innovative assessment tools to better reflect surgical judgement and outcomes rather than relying solely on traditional testing.
None of the progress we celebrate would be possible without our volunteers, staff, and the broader ABFAS community. On behalf of all our members who volunteer with ABFAS, thank you. ABFAS is only as strong as the people who support it, and the past 50 years are a direct reflection of the dedication of our Diplomates, candidates, and volunteers.
As we celebrate this milestone, I invite you to recognize that your service in pursuit of excellence ensures that ABFAS certification remains the gold standard for foot and ankle surgery.
Michael D. Dujela, DPM, FACFAS President, American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery
honoring our legacy, investing in our future
A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I am honored to begin my role as CEO of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and grateful for the warm welcome from our community. Your kindness and shared commitment to excellence have made this transition truly inspiring.
This year marks a major milestone—50 years of ABFAS. For five decades, we have upheld the highest standards in foot and ankle surgery, guided by our founders’ vision: that board certification validates expertise and protects patient care. That mission remains at the heart of everything we do.
Certification is more than a credential; it is a promise. It tells patients, peers, and institutions that an ABFAS Diplomate meets rigorous standards of knowledge, skill, and ethics. ABFAS continues to evolve our assessments and processes to ensure certified surgeons deliver safe, effective, evidence-based care.
In the years to come, innovation will continue to shape surgical practice and certification processes. But our greatest opportunity for growth lies not in technology alone, it lies in people. Engaging the next generation of foot and ankle surgeons is essential. By mentoring students, expanding outreach, and fostering relationships, we build a stronger pipeline. Every conversation, shadowing opportunity, and shared story can spark a lifelong passion for our field.
ABFAS is committed to supporting these efforts. In the months ahead, we will explore new ways to connect with students and early-career professionals, ensuring our values and standards are carried forward.
As we celebrate our past and embrace our future, I invite you to be part of this journey. Your expertise and passion are the foundation of our success. Together, we will honor the legacy of the last 50 years—and shape the next fifty with purpose, compassion, and vision.
With gratitude and excitement,
Angela J. McGoff, ICE-CCP CEO/Executive Director

ABFAS Prepares New Alternative Pathway for Certification
In 2025, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) adopted a new requirement for all podiatric specialty boards: the development of an alternative pathway for podiatrists who did not complete the current three-year residency structure. These pathways must be carefully designed, transparent, and approved by CPME to ensure they meet the same standards of rigor and quality as the traditional certification route.
In anticipation of these new requirements, ABFAS has been laying the groundwork by defining eligibility and assessment criteria for an alternative pathway over the past year. An alternative pathway for those who have completed three-year residencies after 2014 is also being considered. ABFAS is in the process of finalizing the implementation plan, which will be submitted to CPME for review at its first 2026 meeting.
ABFAS is committed to ensuring that the alternative pathway upholds the same high standards expected of every Diplomate, while also providing a fair opportunity to candidates seeking certification through this route. The goal is to ensure fairness, so that both those using the new pathway and those completing the traditional route are held to consistent expectations.
ABFAS will continue to keep you informed through our website, newsletters, and direct emails. More updates will be shared as this important work develops. ABFAS is moving swiftly to launch this program and remains on track for the earliest possible CPME approval.
A NEW CHAPTER FOR CASE REVIEW
OPENING DOORS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF FOOT AND ANKLE SURGEONS
The ABFAS Board of Directors is proud to introduce important updates to the Case Review process that better reflect the realities of day-to-day foot and ankle surgical practice and potentially allow candidates to achieve Board Certification in Foot Surgery sooner after residency. These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to improving processes, making them more relevant to the profession, and ensuring that our standards remain strong and meaningful.
Over the past two years, ABFAS Case Review Committee members, volunteers and staff undertook a substantial revision of Case Review eligibility requirements with the goal of ensuring continued alignment of the Case Review process with the ABFAS mission and vision. Their work included a detailed analysis of surgical procedures performed by podiatrists, intensive discussion of cases and procedures by subject matter experts, consultation with an independent psychometrician, and a review and refinement of Case Review eligibility requirements.
Starting with the 2026 Case Review, a broader range of procedure types will now count toward eligibility. This means candidates may potentially be eligible for Case Review sooner after Residency. Although Case Review eligibility may now allow many candidates to achieve certification much more quickly after residency, the rigorous Case Review standard remains unchanged. In fact, by expanding the range of eligible procedures, the process now reflects a broader and more representative scope of surgical practice. These updates ensure a more accurate and meaningful assessment of each candidate’s clinical competence.
For many of those seeking ABFAS certification, this is more than just a policy change-- it’s a newly opened door, a quicker step forward, and a chance to be ABFAS Board Certified sooner after residency. The changes to Case Review show that ABFAS continues to innovate and adapt while remaining constant in our mission and vision: safeguarding public health by certifying and assessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of foot and ankle surgeons to ensure excellence in surgical care.
More information on the changes can be found at abfas . org/bcdoc and at abfas . org/CREligibility. A detailed list of eligible procedures for Case Review can be found at abfas . org/CRProcedures .
We encourage candidates to continue logging in PLS all cases performed after completing residency to determine if they will be eligible for Case Review. Registration for 2026 ABFAS Case Review will open on November 3, 2025 and close December 8, 2025.
TAKING THE LEAD
CONTINUOUS LEARNING, CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
Since its launch in 2022, the Longitudinal Education and Assessment for Diplomates (LEAD) program has transformed the way ABFAS Diplomates maintain certification. And in January 2025, LEAD took another major step forward.
The LEAD platform upgrade was driven by diplomate feedback and best practices for longitudinal assessments:
• Increased relevance with quarterly focus areas
• Spaced repetition for reinforced learning over time
• A redesigned dashboard with easier navigation and clearer progress tracking
• An improved assessment experience—streamlined and more intuitive
The result? A more efficient, personalized, and impactful way to keep your surgical knowledge sharp.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)
LEAD participation earns you CME credit every quarter you complete all 20 questions.
• CME credit is retroactive. If you completed past quarters, you’ve already earned credit.
• You get credit no matter your MDT p-value. Whether or not you answered questions correctly, it still counts.
• It’s easy to download your CME Transcript from your ABFAS online profile.

More Than Just a Test
Unlike one-time, high-stakes exams, a longitudinal assessment is designed to strengthen knowledge over time. By delivering questions in smaller, regular intervals, LEAD promotes deeper retention and reduces test anxiety. This approach aligns with proven adult-learning methods—helping Diplomates not just demonstrate what they know, but truly reinforce it for the long term.
In April, ABFAS Chief Certification Officer, Chris Lundeen, published “A Smarter Path to Continuous Learning,” highlighting how LEAD is more than just a test—it’s a tool built for lasting learning.

Did you Know?
Diplomates now select a focus area for each LEAD quarter. Since January 2025, most chose General Foot and Ankle Concepts, followed by Diabetic Limb Salvage, Trauma, and Reconstruction.
The average MDT p-value for Time Limited Diplomates is 0 .98 for Foot Surgery and 0 .99 for RRA Surgery . This shows a very high probability that Diplomates are keeping their knowledge up to date .

Promoting Board Qualification
Approved by the ABFSA Board of Directors last year, ABFAS Board-qualified DPMs may now use the term “ABFAS Board Qualified” in advertising or public-facing communication, in accordance with Advertising Policies for ABFAS Boardqualified DPMs. Since ABFAS Board-qualified DPMs are eligible to take the Part II Case Review Examination, you may also use the term “ABFAS Board Eligible” instead of ABFAS Board Qualified.
Advertising Policies
The ABFAS Board of Directors has adopted policies to assist in communicating and advertising ABFAS status appropriately and professionally. All advertising should convey professional values, attitudes, and demeanor. These polices help protect and enhance the public image of foot and ankle surgery.

FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE
Students and residents represent the future of the profession. Over the past year, we have continued our partnerships and found new opportunities for students to engage with ABFAS leaders to learn more about the organization, the profession, and the board certification process. We have also begun to further our outreach to residents at their programs and provide exam preparation materials and courses so they can hit the ground running in their pursuit of ABFAS Certification after graduation.
Webinars and Presentations
This year, ABFAS partnered with student and young physician organizations to share more about Board Certification and exams. Directors presented at the New York Podiatry Conference and the Florida Podiatric Medical Association’s Science & Medical Symposium.
In August 2025, ABFAS Immediate Past President Michelle Butterworth, DPM, FACFAS and ABFAS Director Diana Rogers, DPM, FACFAS gave an online exam prep webinar for NYSPMA that covered ABFAS Part I Didactic and CBPS as well as Case Review exams.
In May 2025 ABFAS Director Roland Ramdass, DPM, FACFAS presented to residents at the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus Residency Program about ABFAS exams and Case Review logging helping residents begin to prepare to pursue certification after graduation.
College Visits
ABFAS and ACFAS board members visited podiatry schools nationwide, highlighting the value of certification and leading hands-on workshops.
Through an expanded APMSA partnership, ABFAS hosted a standalone college visit at Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science in February 2025, and at the LECOM School of Podiatric Medicine in September 2025. ABFAS President-Elect Dustin Kruse, DPM, FACFAS and ABFAS Secretary Treasurer Tim Mineo, DPM, FACFAS visited both schools and discussed how to achieve work/life balance as a successful foot and ankle surgeon.
Surgeons of Tomorrow
After reviewing more than 50 entries, the ABFAS Communication Committee announced the 2024 Surgeons of Tomorrow Essay and Video contest. Jordan Jefferson from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine won the written essay category and JoAnn Micah Sedoriosa from Dr. William M.
