MAINTAINING THE

Highest Standards

A Message from the President Who are we and where do we want the profession of podiatric medicine and surgery to go? We are respected experts within the medical community, who have demonstrated a dedication to achieving, upholding, and preserving high standards for surgical education, knowledge, experience, and skills. Being ABFAS Board Certified signals we have put in the extra steps necessary to prove that we are not only well trained, but we also have the surgical expertise to complete a peer-review process, demonstrating skills and up-to-date procedures for the best patient outcomes. Our practices today have been shaped by the hard work and dedication of the many DPMs who spent countless hours paving the pathway to a professional standard of excellence and advanced practice that sets our surgical skills apart from others in our field. ABFAS (formerly the American Board of Podiatric Surgery) was formed in 1975 out of necessity to show our surgical competency and set standards within our profession. Our predecessors recognized the need to enhance our training, increase our proficiency, and improve our surgical standards to compete with our DO and MD counterparts. We have benefited from their tenacity to move our profession forward, and now it is our turn. We cannot move backward. We must continue to ensure others understand our unique level of skill in caring for our patients; continue to educate medical colleagues, hospital administrators, and insurance panels about the added value we bring to patient care; and continue to set the highest standard of care—not only for those who came before us, but for the future of our profession. So where do we want to go from here? Over this past year, I had the pleasure and opportunity to meet students, residents, and young practitioners from across the country. There are so many dedicated individuals ready to step into leadership roles and continue the journey with new ideas to elevate our profession. This year, to further invest in the future of the profession, ABFAS enhanced our sponsorship of the American Podiatric Medical Student Association. Look for the students highlighted through the Surgeons of Tomorrow conference scholarship program, the Student Spotlight series on ABFAS social media channels, and the Michael L. Stone Awards, which will be presented at the ABFAS Annual Meeting in February at the ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference. Today’s student champions are tomorrow’s leaders. We have also developed resources for those candidates seeking ABFAS Board Qualification and Certification. In February, we launched My Exam Pathway, an interactive online tool to clarify exactly which exams candidates need to pass to become ABFAS Board Certified. In August, we hosted a live webinar for more than 300 residents to demystify the CBPS process. While we will not lower our standards, we can increase access to resources to help our candidates succeed—and that will continue to be a priority in the coming year.

4

And for our Diplomates, the LEAD program has proven to be a successful way of keeping surgeons up to date on current concepts and providing instant feedback and answers. We are proud to offer continuing medical education credits as a bonus to keeping current on certification. Finally, we are excited to welcome a new generation of highly qualified ABFAS Board-Certified foot and ankle surgeons to our ranks. Please turn to page 20 in this newsletter to recognize their outstanding achievement. In this last year, there have been several discussions about the idea of one board and a less rigorous pathway certificate that confuses the public, the medical profession, and what it means to be certified by the only surgical certification board recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education. To meet the ever-changing needs of the profession, we have been exploring our examination process with many exciting things to come this year. What we cannot—and will not—change are the parts of our process that ensure the highest standards. For example, case review is the hallmark of every surgical board certification; it will continue to be part of ours. After years of explaining and surgically proving that we are just like our MD/DO colleagues, we must not choose to reduce our standards with a certificate that is not recognized by our own governing body or the medical field. Instead of creating division within the profession, we should focus on the greater medical community and our patients, continuing to demonstrate our commitment to and proficiency in the art and science of foot and ankle surgery. It is my honor to serve as president this year, and I look forward to another great year growing together and strengthening the profession.

Nicole A. Bauerly, DPM, D.ABFAS, FACFAS President, American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery

Our standards ensure the highest quality of patient care and outcomes through our comprehensive, multi-part board certification process, and we are proud of the data that supports our approach:

83% of podiatrists

who attempt ABFAS Board Certification in Foot Surgery are successful.

76% of the 2023

residency class passed at least one of their ABFAS Final-year In-training Exams, which can count towards Part I Board Qualification exam requirements.

THE TEAM

Behind the Scenes

A Message from the CEO/Executive Director As you can imagine, there are a lot of activities that take place to ensure that ABFAS examination and certification processes run well and that we continue to provide excellent service to our Diplomates, those who are Board Qualified, candidates, credentialers, and the public. While our team (we call ourselves the Didactics) is few in numbers, we are a dynamic bunch. And although we have a traditional organizational chart showing who is in which department, all of our work is cross-functional. We work well together to support all of you.

Here’s a peek behind the scenes at what we were up to this past year: FACILITATING EXAM DEVELOPMENT. There are a multitude of steps, checks, and balances that go into ABFAS exam development. Several times a year, ABFAS hosts item-writer training to provide thorough instruction on the item-writing process. The item writers then write items for the didactic exams and a committee reviews and refines the items to ensure they meet ABFAS standards and the evolving needs of the profession. In case you missed it, ABFAS Director of Examinations Chris Lundeen wrote the article, The Evolution of a LEAD Question, explaining the comprehensive process that goes into developing questions for the LEAD Continuous Certification Program—a process that is similar across all ABFAS didactic exams. IMPROVING THE EXAM EXPERIENCE. To help candidates better understand exactly which exams they still need to take, we launched the My Exam Pathway interactive online tool. We also partnered with the Exam Prep Task Force to develop a live, interactive webinar to better prepare residents for the Computer-based Patient Simulation (CBPS) Examination. To enhance the online user experience, we updated the proprietary ABFAS CBPS platform and redesigned the proprietary ABFAS Case Review logging platform, Podiatry Logging Service. SUPPORTING THE WORK OF COMMITTEES. We have staff liaisons who provide administrative support to ABFAS’ eleven committees and task forces. Activities range from providing training for new item writers and working with the committees on implementing strategies, to partnering with committee chairs to ensure assignments are complete. For LEAD, we compile your feedback and review all comments with the Continuous Certification Committee. INCREASING OUTREACH. Last year, didactic team members staffed booths at the Florida Podiatric Medical Association Science & Management Symposium (SAM), New York State Podiatric Medical Association Podiatric Clinical Conference & Exhibition, ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference, Midwest Podiatry 6

Conference, Western Foot and Ankle Conference, and the American Podiatric Medical Association’s The National, and you will continue to see our presence at these events in the coming year. We also grew our social media presence—particularly on Instagram and LinkedIn—and published a full podcast on the pathway to ABFAS Board Certification, as well as excerpts dispelling misconceptions about the process. FOLLOWING THE RULES. To keep our recognition as the surgical board, we submit an annual report to the Specialty Board Recognition Committee each year. This year, we submitted the every-third-year requirement for a detailed petition to continue as the surgical board, which we are happy to report was successful. Each year, we also submit a report to the Council on Podiatric Medical Education’s Continuing Education Committee so that we can continue our role as a continuing medical education (CME) provider. This year, we were successful in our petition to grant CMEs to LEAD participants. CELEBRATING OUR BIG SUCCESS STORY. For our largest project this year, we completely revamped our database. Although totally invisible to you, the ABFAS database contains your contact information, drives your invoices, tracks your certification progress and exam results, and connects to your ABFAS, LEAD, and PLS profiles. It’s the lifeblood of our operations. We thank you for your patience this year when we “shut down” for a few days when the new system went live and are very pleased to report that this huge project came in on time and within budget. SERVING YOU. Last, but certainly not least, is the teamwork and professionalism that goes into sending communications and answering your questions. Yes, we are the group behind all those emails, newsletters, letters, and phone calls. We also communicate on your behalf, providing verification of your ABFAS status to insurance companies, hospitals, and surgery centers. We are all proud to work within the profession to support you and the work that you do.

MAXIMIZING YOUR LEAD EXPERIENCE In 2022, ABFAS launched the Longitudinal Education and Assessment for Diplomates (LEAD) program to replace the traditional, once-every-ten-years recertification and self-assessment examinations. Similar to the longitudinal assessments of the American Board of Medical Specialties’ member boards, the program provides ongoing learning of surgical concepts and the flexibility to complete assessments on your own time.

The Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee (CREC)— a joint venture of ABFAS, the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, and the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME)—invites ABFAS Diplomates to nominate themselves as candidates for residency program on-site evaluators.

CALL FOR RESIDENCY PROGRAM EVALUATORS

CREC oversees the selection, training, and assessment of podiatric residency program on-site evaluators and seeks nominees with experience as a program director or faculty in a CPME-approved residency program. The ability to travel and knowledge of the Podiatry Residency Resource (PRR) and CPME Document 320 are critical to the role. Interested Diplomates should submit a CV and cover letter, detailing their experience with residency programs and PRR, to ABFAS CEO/Executive Director Kathy Kreiter at

PAVING THE WAY TO

Success

Each year, thousands of DPMs demonstrate their commitment to excellence in foot and ankle surgery by pursuing ABFAS Board Certification, and we are dedicated to helping set them up for success. Over the past year, through the work of committees and volunteers, we have launched and enhanced a multitude of resources to help future Diplomates at every stage of their journey.

Exam Prep Tools & Resources DIDACTIC EXAMINATION

CBPS EXAMINATION

Launched over the summer, the Approaching ABFAS Didactic Exam Questions video provides tips to help test-takers prepare for the ABFAS Didactic Examination.

On August 31, ABFAS hosted a live, interactive webinar for more than 300 residents and program directors to unravel the mysteries behind the ABFAS Computer-based Patient Simulation (CBPS) Examination. ABFAS Director Diana E. Rogers, DPM, D.ABFAS, FACFAS, and Exam Prep Task Force Member Ellianne M. Nasser, DPM, D.ABFAS, FACFAS, provided an overview of the ABFAS In-training Exams, exam-taking tips, and stepby-step guidance on how to approach a CBPS case.

WATCH VIDEO: abfas.org/didactic-video In Fall 2022, we increased the number of practice questions in each didactic practice exam from 25 to 30 questions each—for a total of 20 new questions across the four exams. The system also now provides a report, which includes how participants answered each question, as well as each question’s topics, subtopics, and an explanation of the best answer.

We also enhanced the CBPS practice exam by adding new two new cases, in addition to the existing five.

It’s important to help new physicians connect with ABFAS leadership and envision their future as an ABFAS Board Certified foot and ankle surgeon. In addition to receptions at both the ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference and APMA’s The National for student, resident, and young professional attendees, ABFAS board members hosted a leadership roundtable on work-life balance for members of APMA’s Emerging Leaders Program, as part of its sponsorship.

ENHANCING OUR FOCUS ON

Students

ABFAS recognizes the vital role students play in ensuring the future of the profession. Over the past year, we have strengthened our partnerships and increased opportunities for students to engage with ABFAS and our leaders to learn more about the organization, the profession, and the board certification process.

APMSA Sponsorship The American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association (APMSA) represents the collective interests of more than 2,400 podiatric medical student members. To support the organization, its student members, and the leadership pipeline, ABFAS will continue its APMSA sponsorship in the coming year. In addition to opportunities to address the APMSA House of Delegates and contribute articles in APMSA’s Footnotes magazine, we will enhance our visibility through webinars, more college visits, and sponsorship of the APMSA Academic & Athletic Conference.

College Visits ABFAS and ACFAS board members joined up and hit the road on visits to podiatry schools across the country, where they emphasized the value of ABFAS Board Certification and hosted hands-on workshops.

Surgeons of Tomorrow Last year, ABFAS announced the inaugural Surgeons of Tomorrow Student Conference Scholarship Contest. In a video or written essay, students responded to the prompt: “Why is ABFAS Board Certification important to you as an aspiring podiatric surgeon, and how will you use it to benefit your patients?” ABFAS received more than 40 entries from students across the country. The two winners, Remi Drake from the Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine at Midwestern University and Faith Carelli from the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University, received a trip to the ACFAS 81st Annual Scientific Conference, including registration, travel, lodging, and stipend; recognition at the ABFAS Annual Meeting; and a meet-and-greet with members of the ABFAS Board of Directors and Communications Committee.and Surgery at Des Moines University. They received a trip to the ACFAS 81st Annual Scientific Conference, including registration, travel, lodging, and stipend; recognition at the ABFAS Annual Meeting; and a meetand-greet with members of the ABFAS Board of Directors and Communications Committee.

Student Spotlight In March, ABFAS launched the Student Spotlight series on social media, highlighting the foot and ankle surgeons of tomorrow. We have featured more than 15 students (and counting!) to date. Surgeons of Tomorrow winners with members of the ABFAS Board of Directors
