Over the past few years, so much has changed in our profession and our world as a whole. We endured COVID, and physicians are still dealing with the impact in their lives and practices. We defended our standards and protected public safety as another board tried to usurp our credential and provide an easy path to surgical board certification. We now also have a shortage of students applying to our podiatric medical schools, and we face a student recruitment crisis.
These are just a few challenges we needed to address and focus on in our new strategic plan, which the ABFAS Board of Directors recently adopted and published. The strategic plan includes a new mission, core purpose, and values, as well as goals to guide us through the next 3–5 years.
ABFAS is the only foot and ankle surgery certification board recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME); therefore, maintaining high quality standards is our priority and embedded in all that we do. Our certification process is rigorous, demanding, and a true achievement when obtained.
We also continue to ensure that our Diplomates have continuous learning and are up to date with their surgical skills and knowledge through our LEAD assessment. This format has kept us on the forefront of certification and maintains our parity with other healthcare professionals.
We are continuously evaluating our exam processes to ensure that they are fair, relevant, valid, and reflect what we do as a profession. We perform regular job task analyses and incorporate these results into our examinations.
We listen to our board-qualified candidates, addressing their concerns and providing resources to assist them in achieving board certification. In the spirit of innovation, there are new and exciting changes on the horizon for candidates pursuing ABFAS Board Certification—stay tuned!
We are also dedicated to the future of our profession, particularly in our continued and enhanced support of students. I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet many students and residents throughout my time on the ABFAS Board, and I am amazed by their dedication and passion for our profession and encouraged that our future is in good hands.
ABFAS safeguards public health and well-being by certifying and continuously assessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of podiatric surgeons to ensure excellence in surgical care.
To promote the health and well-being of the public.
QUALITY: Committing to high standards and trustworthiness.
EXCELLENCE: Embracing innovation, continuous improvement, and adaptability.
INTEGRITY: Upholding fairness and transparency in all our actions.
SERVICE: Dedicated to serving the profession and the public.
ABFAS provides access to vital resources regarding its exams. Our Exam Prep Task Force focuses on development of board preparation materials for our in-training, board qualification, and board certification exams; Case Review; and the LEAD assessment. We share practice exams and exam blueprints, host live webinars and lectures at national and regional events, and we engage students both virtually and in-person throughout the year, so they can become more familiar with our board certification process.
We publicize our exam pass rates on our website, at our Annual Meeting, and in this newsletter (see p. 22–23), and we share in-training exam results with all of the residency programs so they can review their residents’ progress and work on problematic areas.
ABFAS safeguards public health and well-being by certifying and continuously assessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of podiatric surgeons to ensure excellence in surgical care. Even in its new iteration, it has—and continues to be—our mission to protect the public, and we take this mission very seriously.
When we grant ABFAS Board Certification to a candidate, we give that surgeon our stamp of approval and provide patients with the confidence that their physician has achieved the highest standard for the surgical arm of our profession.
Thank you for your trust and confidence in allowing me to serve as your president. I promise to continue the great path of leadership that has come before me and keep ABFAS committed to quality, excellence, integrity, and service to the public and the profession.
Michelle L. Butterworth, DPM, FACFAS President, American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery
Once again, our small, dynamic team continues to work behind the scenes, ensuring that you have a positive experience when interacting with ABFAS. Here’s what we’ve been up to lately.
We understand that the board certification process can be daunting, and we continuously seek out opportunities to provide resources and a user-friendly experience.
Supported by ABFAS staff, the Exam Prep Task Force has developed new materials to assist candidates in their journey toward ABFAS Board Certification, including the Case Review Quick Guide to help recently graduated residents get a jumpstart on the Case Review process. We also hosted webinars to help candidates prepare for their CBPS examination and Case Review.
If you haven’t done so already, we encourage candidates to check out the popular My Exam Pathway interactive online tool to help understand the requisite exams needed to become ABFAS Board Qualified or Board Certified. For those of you who may find yourselves needing an extension of your board-qualified status, we now offer an easy-to-complete online form for your use.
Those who participated in Case Review this year also saw a few changes. For those who had difficulties with the facility audit, we allowed extra time to obtain the correct documents. And this year, we gave everyone who had incorrect surgeon of record documentation an opportunity to correct it. Future Case Review exam takers take note—it’s the intraoperative anesthesia record or circulating nurse’s notes that we need.
MAINTAINING
Did you know that in order for you to pay by credit card, we must be Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard compliant? That’s to protect your data. We renew our compliance quarterly.
And, like all of you, we maintain HIPAA compliance. Each year, we renew our HIPAA Seal of Compliance through the Compliancy Group—and working with hospitals and physicians in the Veteran’s Administration adds another layer of complexity, as it also has to approve our data security. As ABFAS manages the Podiatry Residency Resource (PRR) on behalf of the PRR Board, we ensure PRR is compliant as well.
Most importantly, ABFAS continues to be the only surgical certification board recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME). Each year, CPME’s Specialty Board Recognition Committee reviews our activities and, if we meet the requirements, recommends that CPME continue our recognition. We are thankful to our many volunteers who help with our exam development and delivery to maintain our high standards and meet CPME requirements.
SUPPORTING
Pages 8–9 of the newsletter highlight major LEAD developments and opportunities for Diplomates, but there are many ways that ABFAS staff support you that you may not realize.
First off, we have a dedicated team to answer your calls and respond to your questions about your board certification status, LEAD requirements, annual fee payments, and so much more. They also proactively provide personal outreach to ensure you meet participation requirements and don’t miss deadlines, and they staff the ABFAS booth at national and regional events. Come by, say hi, and put a friendly face to the name.
Attention, Florida-based Diplomates! You can access LEAD CME credit through your CE Broker profile, making it easier to meet your state licensing requirements. We plan to expand our partnerships, with more states to come!
We also field thousands of requests a year from hospitals, surgery centers, and insurance companies to verify your credentials.
BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS. Through collaborations with organizational partners, we enhance the value of ABFAS Board Certification and secure the future of the profession.
One of our strongest and most natural partnership is with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), as most of our Diplomates are ACFAS Fellows and many of our board-qualified DPMs are associate members. Like you, we look to ACFAS to provide high-quality education, showcase the subject matter expertise of leading foot and ankle surgeons, and elevate the profession. That’s why we embarked on a partnership to identify and provide educational resources that correspond to key LEAD topic areas. ABFAS board members also co-host speaking engagements and workshops for students at the 11 podiatric medical schools.
And we continue our partnership with the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), sponsoring the Young Physicians’ Reception, the Young Physicians’ “Lunch & Learn,” and the Student and Residents Program at The National. We will also continue to support APMA’s Emerging Leaders’ Program.
Speaking of students, we continue to support them on a national level through our enhanced sponsorship of the American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association, which includes standalone college visits to increase ABFAS visibility; regular feature articles and full-page advertisements in Footnotes magazine; and a new webinar series, launching in the coming months.
INCREASING
From newsletters, e-blasts, and web updates to presentations, industry advertisements, and social media presence, ABFAS staff works hard to keep candidates and Diplomates in the know and elevate awareness of the value of ABFAS Board Certification. Check out our Instagram, LinkedIn, and/or Facebook pages for important updates, videos from members, and our popular Student Spotlight series.a
Thank you for your commitment to ABFAS, your board certification, the profession, and your patients. We love what we do—and we’re here to support you.

American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery
2023–24 BY-THE-NUMBERS
Delivered 8,994 exams to 1,949 test-takers.
Served as staff liaisons to 14 committees, work groups, and task forces, supporting more than 100 volunteers.
Received 217 applications from Diplomates to serve on an ABFAS committee. Although we had more volunteers than openings, we appreciate your willingness to serve!
Hosted a CBPS prep webinar for nearly 300 attendees and a Case Review overview webinar for more than 150 participants.
Processed 82 extensions for candidates.
Hosted more than 2,000 users for the My Exam Pathway interactive online tool.
Responded to 38,946 verification requests from credentialing organizations.
In 2022, ABFAS launched the Longitudinal Education and Assessment for Diplomates (LEAD) program to replace the traditional, once-every-ten-years recertification and self-assessment examinations.
Similar to continuous certification programs introduced by other certifying boards, LEAD consistently demonstrates both the potential for continuous, ongoing learning of surgical concepts and the flexibility and ease with which busy surgeons can answer LEAD questions—plus, no need to take time away from work or family to travel to a testing center.
Diplomates receive CME credit for each completed quarter of the LEAD program. The benefit is retroactive, with credit awarded for all quarters completed to date. To earn LEAD CME credit, you must answer all 20 questions in a quarter. ABFAS awards CME credit regardless of your MDT p-value or whether you answered each question correctly.
ACCESS YOUR CME: abfas.org/lead-cme
Since the program’s inception, more than 50,000 CME credits have been awarded for LEAD participation.
50,000 > CME CREDITS
After two years of administering the assessment, collecting data, and receiving feedback, ABFAS decided to make the LEAD process more userfriendly. Starting January 1, 2024, ABFAS reduced the quarterly LEAD assessment from 30 questions to 20 questions, allowing Diplomates to spend less time on LEAD and more time with patients.
In a two-page spread featured in the August issue of Podiatry Management, ABFAS Director of Certification Services Jonathan Golike shared the history behind LEAD and what the future holds for the program.
READ PROFILE: abfas.org/lead-profile
After analyzing LEAD results and identifying areas for educational opportunities, ABFAS has partnered with ACFAS to develop resources that will benefit ABFAS Diplomates for keeping their knowledge up to date.
The average MDT p-value for Time-Limited Diplomates is 0.96 for Foot Surgery and 0.98 for RRA Surgery. This shows a very high probability that ABFAS Diplomates are keeping their knowledge up to date.
Becoming ABFAS Board Certified is a major professional achievement, and communicating your board-certified status to patients, employers, colleagues, and the general public demonstrates your dedication to the highest standards of care.
This year, ABFAS updated its trifold brochures, which help patients understand the rigorous process involved in becoming ABFAS Board Certified and why they should opt for an ABFAS Board-certified podiatrist. Diplomates may request one set of 50 brochures at no cost each year.
REQUEST YOUR BROCHURES: abfas.org/brochures
The ABFAS Board of Directors has adopted policies to assist in communicating and advertising ABFAS status appropriately and professionally. All advertising should convey professional values, attitudes, and demeanor. These polices can help protect and enhance the public image of foot and ankle surgery.
VIEW POLICY:

ABFAS will provide a complimentary framed certificate when you first achieve ABFAS Board Certification in Foot Surgery and another if you achieve Board Certification in RRA Surgery. Showcase your framed certificate in a prominent area of your office to demonstrate your dedication to your patients and the profession.
Come visit the ABFAS booth at an upcoming conference. We will have staff available to answer questions about your ABFAS status, the LEAD Continuous Certification Program, and the board certification process.

SEE POLICY: abfas.org/policies
Students play a vital role in the future of the profession. Over the past year, we have expanded our partnerships and increased opportunities for students to engage with ABFAS leaders to learn more about the organization, the profession, and the board certification process.
To address the student recruitment crisis and ensure qualified candidates enter the pipeline, ABFAS provided funding over the past year to support both the AACPM Feet on the Street initiative and the Foundation for Podiatric Education. We also enhanced our sponsorship with the American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association (APMSA) to increase our visibility in front of its more than 2,400 podiatric medical student members.
ABFAS and ACFAS board members joined up and hit the road on visits to podiatry schools across the country, where they emphasized the value of ABFAS board certification and hosted hands-on workshops.
NEW THIS YEAR: Through our expanded partnership with APMSA, ABFAS hosted a standalone college visit at Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine & Surgery in August. ABFAS Directors Scott C. Nelson, DPM, FACFAS, and Vito Speciale, DPM, FACFAS, discussed how to achieve work/life balance as a successful foot and ankle surgeon.
Last year, ABFAS launched the “Student Spotlight” series on social media, highlighting the foot and ankle surgeons of tomorrow. We have featured more than 30 students (and counting!) to date.
After reviewing more than 40 entries, the ABFAS Communication Committee selected Paul Adeyemi from Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine and Olivia Mackey from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Podiatric Medicine as the winners of the 2023 ABFAS Surgeons of Tomorrow Student Conference Scholarship Contest.
The winners received a trip to the ACFAS 82nd Annual Scientific Conference, including registration, travel, lodging, and stipend; recognition at the ABFAS Annual Meeting; and a meet-and-greet with members of the ABFAS Board of Directors and Communications Committee.
On February 1, ABFAS President Nicole A. Bauerly, DPM, FACFAS, presented the Michael L. Stone, DPM, Outstanding Professional Conduct Awards to nine exceptional individuals representing the highest standard of professionalism, deportment, and ethics in their interactions with peers, professors, and staff. Recipients received a plaque commemorating their achievement and a cash award of $2,000 to be used at the student’s discretion.
The award is named for ABFAS Past President Michael L. Stone, DPM, who was deeply committed to elevating the standards and quality of residency training and was the embodiment of outstanding professional conduct, respect, and ethics.

Below, find the most recent examination pass rate data from candidates undertaking the two-step process to earn ABFAS Board Certification. ABFAS publishes this data each year in the annual newsletter and in conjunction with the ABFAS Annual Meeting.
