A Message from the President
I am honored to serve as your ABFAS President. This opportunity comes at a time when our profession faces both opportunities and new challenges. I’m grateful to know I can rely on the experience and ongoing support of my predecessors as we look to the future.
Jeffery L. Giesking, DPM, D.ABFAS President
An ABFAS volunteer since 2007, Dr. Giesking practices at Mayo Clinic Health System-Northwest Region in Eau Claire and Menomonie, Wisconsin.
Since my election to the ABFAS Board of Directors in 2017, I have been a part of two significant milestones: the streamlining of the Board Certification process for candidates and the recent introduction of the new LEAD Continuous Certification program. These two projects were longterm endeavors that required a substantial amount of teamwork—the type of teamwork I plan to continue to promote during my term as President. I am also proud to see the introduction of new preparatory materials on the ABFAS website for takers of the Part I Didactic and NEW CBPS exams, as well as prep materials for Case Review candidates.
These updates and changes were part of a commitment to continuous evolution at ABFAS. It’s a healthy process, and more important than ever. This past summer, the ABFAS Board of Directors engaged in a strategic planning process to address the priority issues you raised as part of the Community Survey ABFAS conducted this year. Our goal is to keep ABFAS competitive, efficient, respected, and protected from outside influence.
On the cover: Zach Farley, DPM, D.ABFAS, performs an osteotomy of the foot for deformity correction at Northeast Georgia Health System in Braselton, Georgia.
At the same time, we are working to call attention to the fundamental differences between ABFAS Board Certification and other, unrecognized surgical certifications that do not require any case review component for recent residency graduates. It matters to all
of us, because lower standards serve neither patients, nor the profession. ABFAS is the only Foot and Ankle Surgery Certification Board recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), and that is why ABFAS Board Certification remains a prerequisite for surgical privileges with many hospitals, insurance companies, and large medical groups.
Our mission at ABFAS is to protect and improve the health and welfare of the public by advancing the art and science of foot and ankle surgery. I am proud of the fact that more than 10,000 highly skilled podiatrists have earned ABFAS Board Certification, with more joining their ranks each year. Working together, I am confident we can continue to grow our community and deliver on our important mission, ensuring patients, providers, and physicians know ABFAS is truly the professional gold standard and a credential they can trust.
Thank you for your support and your continued commitment to the highest standards of patient care.
Jeffery L. Giesking, DPM, D.ABFAS President
“Working together, I am confident we can continue to grow our community and deliver on our important mission, ensuring patients, providers and physicians know ABFAS is truly the professional gold standard and a credential they can trust.”
The LEAD program successfully launched for all Diplomates in January of 2022, advancing ABFAS into a new realm of ongoing, continuous assessment. Diplomates find that LEAD strengthens the ABFAS mission of protecting public health, benefits Diplomates through continuous learning, and offers a more convenient system of assessment in lieu of the once-every-ten-years recertification and self-assessment exams.
As of mid-August 2022, 78 percent of ABFAS Diplomates have completed at least one quarter of the LEAD assessment, with 60 percent participating in both Quarters 1 and 2. Diplomates have given rave reviews of the new system, especially because the average time for a Diplomate to complete a full quarterly assessment of 30 questions is just 22 minutes. Contrast this with taking a full day away from practice once each decade for an assessment at a testing center!
ABFAS has collected several Diplomate LEAD experiences online at abfas.org/LEADtestimonials .
How to Check Your LEAD Progress

Once you have started a LEAD assessment, you can check your progress and performance by clicking on the three stacked lines at the top, lefthand corner of your LEAD assessment site:

Then click “Progress.” The box at the center shows your MDT p-value (your performance), while the one on the right shows which cycle you are in, how many quarters you need for your participation requirement, and the cycle end date.
For a video on how to access your LEAD Progress and History, visit abfas.org/ LEADvideos.
LEAD Participation: Not Every Quarter!
One important note: most Diplomates do not need to participate every quarter, and only need to complete 12 of the 20 available LEAD quarters every five years. Many Diplomates have truncated initial LEAD participation cycles to match their specific ten-year Board Certification expiration years, so it is important to check individual minimum participation requirements as outlined at abfas.org/LEADrequirements .
As Diplomates adjust to the new program, ABFAS continues to provide information to help them understand the new program. This includes Measurement Decision Theory (MDT), which gauges the probability a Diplomate is keeping up with topics relevant to the practice of foot and ankle surgery. MDT is based on the last 120 questions a Diplomate has answered, not just the percentage of questions they answered correctly.
Diplomates who are newly ABFAS Board Certified in 2022 can rest assured that ABFAS will reach out to let them know when it is time to begin LEAD. This group will start in January 2023.
In addition to the primary resources located at abfas.org/lead, ABFAS offers a LEAD webinar and other videos, as well as a LEAD podcast, at abfas.org/LEADvideos .
Recognition Among Association Peers
Diplomates are not the only parties recognizing LEAD. In Spring 2022, the communications campaign that accompanied LEAD’s development and rollout received a 2022 Merit Award from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
Part of ASAE’s annual Gold Circle Awards program, the Merit Award in the category of “New Product/Service Launch” denoted “distinguished recognition for applicants that had a very strong submission and project,” according to the ASAE announcement of award recipients.
The communications campaign began in 2019, long before ABFAS rolled the program out for Diplomates, and represents the time, effort, and commitment of numerous ABFAS Diplomate volunteers and staff members. The campaign encompassed varied outreach efforts, including web development, print, videos, presentations, and webinars.
If you’re not yet participating in LEAD or have additional questions, we encourage you to explore the resources at abfas.org/lead, email lead@abfas.org, or call us at 415-553-7800. We’re happy to help!
What are Diplomates saying about LEAD?
“My experience thus far with LEAD has been user-friendly, low-stress, and straightforward. The email reminders help me to stay on top of my deadlines. I easily completed the LEAD questions on my smartphone during downtime. This is highly preferable to a testing center!”
Ellianne M. Nasser, DPM, D.ABFAS Scranton, PA

“LEAD has revolutionized ABFAS Board Certification. One of the greatest advantages of the user-friendly platform is the ability to conveniently and immediately track your progress toward fulfilling the program requirements.”
Camille Ryans, DPM, D.ABFAS Manchester, NH
“My first impressions are that the first quarter of LEAD was very well done, clear, and fair. As long as the quality of the questions stays this good, I’d say job well done!”
Michael Downey, DPM, D.ABFAS Philadelphia, PA

Promoting Your Board Status
Earlier this year, ABFAS reviewed and revised its Advertising Policies, and has produced separate versions, one for Board Certified DPMs, and another for Board Qualified and Candidate DPMs. These documents can help you communicate your ABFAS status appropriately and professionally.
Visit the “Promote Your Board Certification” webpage at abfas.org/promote to access the policies and related materials.

Promoting Board Certified Status
In addition to the refreshed Advertising Policies, the “Promote Your Board Certification” webpage offers Diplomates newsletter and press release templates to help promote Board Certification.
Diplomates can now also add the professional notation of D.ABFAS (Diplomate, American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery) to materials
such as websites, email footers, business cards, and letterheads. The D.ABFAS notation should follow the DPM acronym and precede all other acronyms, like this: Jane G. Doe, DPM, D.ABFAS, FACFAS.
Promoting Board Qualified and Candidate Statuses
Remember: Board Qualified and candidate statuses are not official categories, so do not use these terms in advertising or publicfacing documents, including business cards, letterhead, email footers, websites, and biographical information that may be reviewed by the public.
ABFAS does encourage Board Qualified surgeons to list their status on curricula vitae, job applications, and other documentation for review within the profession.
In Memory of

Samuel S. Mendicino, DPM, D.ABFAS
By Past President Alan Ng, DPM, D.ABFASABFAS mourns the loss of Past President Samuel S. Mendicino, DPM, D.ABFAS, who passed away July 24, 2022. Sam served the community and the profession throughout his career. He has been a mentor, a leader, a teacher, a colleague, and most importantly, a friend to countless individuals in our profession. ABFAS applauds Dr. Mendicino for his years of dedication and service to the podiatric profession. His impact and influence will always be present.
Dr. Samuel S. Mendicino was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where he received a BS in Biological Sciences. He received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree in 1983 from the Dr. William Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, where he served as the student body vice president. He completed a residency in foot and ankle surgery at the Harris County Podiatric Surgical Residency and was the chief resident during his last year.
Sam became a member of the Podiatry Hospital of Pittsburg surgical residency training committee, where he worked and practiced from 1985 until 1992. In 1993, Sam established himself in private practice in Houston, and then served as Residency Director of the Harris County Podiatric Surgical Residency Program and Fellowship Program/HCA Houston Healthcare West from 1995-2020. In 1996, he founded the Greater Texas Education Foundation.
Sam offered multiple CME courses that were known for their “no nonsense” and realistic approach, eventually training hundreds of residents and fellows. His influence and guidance have helped establish the roadmap to advancing the podiatric profession, a charge with which we are all now tasked to continue his vision and direction.
In 2019, Podiatry Management inducted Dr. Mendicino into the Podiatric Hall of Fame and bestowed on him a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Significant milestones for ABFAS include serving as President, member of the Board of Directors, overall Chair of Examinations (the “Chair Chair”), member of the Exam Oversight Committee, and Chair of the Examinations Committee. He also held numerous roles for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the Texas Podiatric Medical Association.

We will all miss Sam’s selfless nature and passion for education. We can only hope to strive to continue his vision of advancing the art and science of foot and ankle surgery.
Dr. Mendicino is survived by his children, Hannah Mendicino and Sammy Mendicino; his brothers Robert “Bobby” Mendicino, DPM, D.ABFAS, and Johnny Mendicino; and his parents Sam and Margaret.
ABFAS Partners with Podiatry Students
Ensuring the Future of the Profession
Recognizing the vital role the student pipeline plays in ensuring the future of podiatry, ABFAS has partnered with the American Podiatric Medical Students Association (APMSA) to help ensure the future of the profession. The APMSA is the only organization that serves and connects the students at the ten US podiatric medical colleges. ABFAS sees the potential in reaching this audience of 2,000+ students and has signed on as an APMSA Advocate Partner.
The sponsorship allows for numerous points of cross-pollination between ABFAS and APMSA throughout the year, including opportunities to interact with the APMSA Board of Trustees and work directly with students on content for Footnotes, the APMSA publication. Profiles of ABFAS Diplomates appear in each issue. ABFAS will also support travel costs for APMSA delegates to attend the APMA National and ACFAS Scientific Conference annually.
In addition to this dedicated allocation for APMSA, ABFAS continues to provide ongoing support in other avenues of student recruitment, sponsoring the APMA’s student recruiting efforts, the Step Into Podiatry program. ABFAS also provides financial and speaker support to the APMA Young Physicians’ Institute and to the annual ACFAS Student/Resident Networking Event.
Congratulations to the winners of the ABFAS Young Physicians raffle at the 2022 APMA National, sponsored by ABFAS! ABFAS President Amberly Paradoa, DPM, D.ABFAS, (center) kicked off the National by drawing names to win raffle prizes, including (from left) an iPad Mini for Alisha Joshi, American Express gift cards for Eric Flaherty and Brian Wong, and a Nintendo Switch for Ksenja Llazar.

Can Patients Find You?
ABFAS encourages Diplomates to log in at abfas.org to complete the “Directory Address” section of their profiles with updated professional information. The address you input powers the ABFAS website’s popular Find a Surgeon feature, so periodically reviewing and refreshing your data ensures patients in your area can find you online. If you practice at more than one facility, be sure to list your website.
Keep in Touch with ABFAS
ABFAS uses email as the primary method of communicating announcements and details to Diplomates. To ensure you are receiving ABFAS emails, make sure you add lead@abfas.org, info@abfas.org, updates@abfas.org, and scheduling@abfas.org to your email inbox safe sender list.
Conferences are great opportunities to connect with our friendly staff to learn more about the LEAD program or your ABFAS status—or just to hang out with Team ABFAS!

ABFAS 2022 Highlights
A productive year for the ABFAS Board, Diplomates, and staff
New Board Officers and Directors
ABFAS conducted elections for three open Board of Directors positions in Spring 2022, announcing the results in May. One incumbent, Michelle L. Butterworth, DPM, D.ABFAS, of South Carolina, rejoined the board. Joining the board for their first terms are Dustin L. Kruse, DPM, D.ABFAS, of Colorado and Diana E. Rogers, DPM, D.ABFAS, of Illinois. All three members have terms that began on September 1, 2022 and will end on August 31, 2025.
The ABFAS Board of Directors also elected its new officers for the 2022-23 term, with terms in effect as of September 1: President Jeffrey L. Giesking, DPM, D.ABFAS, of Wisconsin; President-elect Nicole A. Bauerly, DPM, D.ABFAS, of Minnesota; and Dr. Butterworth as Secretary/Treasurer. Amberly C. Paradoa, DPM, D.ABFAS, of Florida has assumed the role of Immediate Past President.
New Committee Members
In Winter 2022, ABFAS released its onceevery-three-years Call for Volunteers. 223 generous Diplomates responded to volunteer their time and expertise. The ABFAS review process resulted in more than 60 new volunteers participating in ABFAS committees, guaranteeing the organization can continue to uphold high standards in assessments and effectively communicate with associations, podiatrists, hospitals and health systems, and patients.
While some of these new volunteers are now members of the Communications Committee, Case Review Committee, and Didactic Examinations Review Working Group, the lion’s share are new item writers for the Part I Didactic exams and LEAD.
Strengthening the ABFAS Candidate Experience

Over the last several years, ABFAS volunteers and staff have worked hard to improve the process of Board Qualification and Certification: allowing residents to convert passed Final-year In-training Exams for Board Qualification, for instance, and the elimination of the Part II CBPS exam.
Building on that positive momentum, in 2022 we continued to strengthen the experience of ABFAS Board Certification candidates. ABFAS reorganized the committees involved in the item writing process, separating the writers from the reviewers, which will allow for a larger, more diverse group of subject matter experts to be involved. The increased number of item writers will help ABFAS meet the demand for the Didactic and LEAD exams. Finally, realignment will also allow the Continuous Certification Committee to focus solely on policy.
In addition, ABFAS has changed the digital system it uses for item development. Switching to the new system will make for a simpler, more userfriendly experience for item writers and reviewers.
Since its 2020 Practice Analysis—a standard practice for certifying boards—ABFAS has focused on increasing transparency and communicating more directly about ABFAS examination content. In 2022, many months of work came to fruition as ABFAS took live major revisions to the content of the Part I Board Qualification examinations, updating its website with a breakdown of the content of both the Didactic exam and the NEW CBPS exam. Candidates will also find revised preparation resources on the ABFAS website, including new practice exams for both the Didactic and NEW CBPS exams.
ABFAS overhauled the Podiatry Logging Service (PLS) this year, and DPMs who log their cases will find that PLS now offers a user-friendly, responsive design, streamlined navigation, and a new dragand-drop feature for documentation upload.
Protecting the Profession
This Spring, ABFAS and partner organizations the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the Washington State Podiatric Medical Association, and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, addressed an inaccurate and misleading presentation delivered by an orthopedic surgeon at a meeting of the Washington state association. The presentation maligned the skills, training, and expertise of foot and ankle surgeons.
More recently, ABFAS joined other leading podiatric organizations and colleges, including the APMA and Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in expressing serious concerns about the American Board of Podiatric Medicine’s (ABPM) decision to issue a new, unrecognized certification in podiatric surgery and the potential confusion it may cause among patients and hospitals. We joined other leaders in asking ABPM to delay its new CAQ until the profession’s Specialty Board Recognition Committee concludes its rulemaking process, which begins in November.

We’re Listening
In Summer 2022, we conducted a Community Survey of Board Certified and Board Qualified foot and ankle surgeons—thank you to all who participated! Checking in with our stakeholders is important so that we can learn what we do well and what we can improve to better serve you.

Results were informative for us. For example, overall, respondents are pleased with the ABFAS website and email updates but asked for more exam preparation materials. Gratifying after our 2021 LEAD communications campaign: Board Certified respondents ranked LEAD resources as highly effective.
After our last Community Survey in 2017, ABFAS implemented numerous changes—many based on your suggestions—from simpler website navigation to a streamlined Board Certification process. The ABFAS Board of Directors and staff immediately incorporated 2022 survey feedback into their Summer strategic planning processes, so be on the lookout for upcoming changes based on your valuable contributions!
Seeking Residency Program Evaluators
The Council on Podiatric Medical Education’s (CPME) Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee (CREC) invites ABFAS Diplomates to nominate themselves as candidates for appointments as residency program on-site evaluators. CREC oversees the selection, training, and assessment of podiatric residency on-site evaluators.
CREC is seeking nominees who have experience as a program director or faculty in a CPMEapproved residency program. The ability to travel and knowledge of PRR and CPME Document 320 are critical to the position. ABFAS Diplomates interested in serving should submit a cover letter stating their experience with residency programs, along with a copy of their CV, to ABFAS CEO/ Executive Director Kathy Kreiter at kkreiter@abfas.org.
Thank You
The volunteer leaders who sit on American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery committees are the beating heart of the organization. It is their time and talent that ensures ABFAS continues its role of strengthening the profession and protecting the public. From exam development and administration, to policy and governance, to communications and outreach, ABFAS cannot succeed without its volunteers.

2022 Michael L. Stone Award Recipients
On February 24, 2022, ABFAS President Amberly C. Paradoa, DPM, D.ABFAS, presented the 2022 Michael L. Stone, DPM, Outstanding Professional Conduct Awards to nine outstanding students. The awards ceremony took place in Austin, Texas as part of the 2022 ABFAS Annual Meeting.
Annual awardees are determined by the professors and fellow students at their respective podiatric medical colleges, and represent the highest standard of professionalism, deportment, and ethics in the students’ interactions with peers, professors, and staff. The recipients receive a plaque and a cash award of $2,000 to be used at the student’s discretion.
The award is named for Michael L. Stone, DPM. Dr. Stone gave generously of his time and energy as a member of committees, as an officer, as president, and as the longest serving member of the Board of Directors. Dr. Stone was deeply committed to elevating the standards and quality of residency training, and was the embodiment of outstanding professional conduct, respect, and ethics. The Outstanding Professional Conduct Award dates to 2003, and upon Dr. Stone’s passing in 2004, ABFAS named the award for him.
Please join ABFAS in congratulating the 2022 Michael L. Stone, DPM, Outstanding Professional Conduct Award winners!

While there, Joshua was a four-year letter-winner in football and served as a two-time captain, First Team Academic All-American, and two-time Hampshire Honor Society member. After graduating and working as a medical scribe, Joshua was inspired to pursue a career in podiatric medicine. At Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, he was honored to serve as a Surgical TA, Suturing TA, Simulation Lab TA, and Secretary for the school’s chapter of the Student National Podiatric Medical Association. Joshua received multiple scholarships and awards while at DMU, most notably achieving membership in DMU’s Pi Delta Honor Society. Outside of podiatry, Joshua enjoys any and every sport, hiking, camping, and adventuring with his wife and black lab.

Katherine Samuelson | Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science
A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Katherine Samuelson earned a Biomedical Engineering degree from the University of Michigan. Her work as a representative for a pacemaker and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator company engendered a love for working with patients in the operating room, which inspired her to return to school for podiatry. While at Scholl College, Katherine was an academic tutor for physiology and histology, as well as a founding member and Secretary of the school’s Foot and Ankle Microsurgical Orthoplastic Society. She pursued research with the Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research at Scholl, and published work in the Foot & Ankle Specialist. She also volunteered her time on Saturday mornings to tutor and mentor elementary students in an underserved community at the Beacon Place. In the future, Katherine hopes to continue pursuing research and teaching. Outside of podiatry, she enjoys running, biking, hiking, and traveling.

Paul Rayward | Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine

Paul Rayward was born and raised in Pearl River, New York. At the University of Notre Dame, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-Professional Studies and completed a supplemental major in Spanish. While in college, he also worked as a student athletic trainer, relishing in the opportunity to work firsthand with the same athletic teams he idolized while growing up. In addition to serving as at KSUCPM class president for all four years, he worked as a tutor, teaching assistant, and student ambassador. He achieved the Dean’s List each semester, as well as Pi Delta National Honor Society membership, was nominated for the American Podiatric Medical Student Association’s (APMSA) Student of the Year, and received both merit and American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Educational Foundation scholarships. Outside of podiatry, Paul loves sports, being outdoors, and spending time with his family.
Keith Crenshaw | New York College of Podiatric Medicine
Keith Crenshaw is an Arizona native who earned both a Bachelor and Master of Science in Biology from Arizona State University. He has a background in teaching Anatomy and Physiology at Arizona State University and Maricopa County Community Colleges, which led to time as a teaching assistant and tutor at New York College of Podiatric Medicine. He discovered podiatry by shadowing a podiatrist and was instantly interested. While at NYCPM, Keith spent much of his time in leadership and research roles, including student body president, American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) Research Coordinator, Student Ambassador, and APMSA President’s committee member. Outside of academics, he travels with his wife, mountain bikes, plays soccer, and loves adventure. Keith looks forward to becoming a leader in podiatry and helping progress the profession through publications and educational and committee positions within the community.
Anthony Schwab | Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine

Anthony Schwab received his Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the football team and a three-year letter winner, graduating as the winningest class in college history. He received a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and soon evinced an interest in podiatry due to its ability to allow athletes to return to sport faster. While at TUSPM, Anthony served as the Sports Medicine Club president, ACFAS student chapter treasurer, Hallux Magazine Chief Editor, Student Ambassador, and member of the Christian Podiatric Student Association. Anthony has received numerous awards and scholarships, is a member of the Pi Delta National Podiatric Medical Honor Society, and ranks at the top of his class. In his spare time, he enjoys working out, golf, football, and spending time with his fiancée and family.
Dy Chin | Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine
Dy Chin was born in Southern California and raised in North Texas. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Texas at Arlington and Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences at Liberty University. At Western, Dy served in various roles such as Anatomy TA/Facilitator, Southern California Podiatric Medical Students’ Association president, student body president, President’s Committee for APMSA members, Alumni Representative, Student Ambassador Leadership Team member, and Senior Editor for the student-run journal Extremitas. Dy received several awards, including a California Podiatric Medical Association scholarship and APMA Educational Foundation Student Scholar. He received grant scholarships for Annual Student Technology and Research Symposium research and submitted an abstract poster that placed third at the APMA National Conference. Outside academics, he serves at Special Olympics, Happy Feet, and Care Harbor, and enjoys outdoor activities, traveling, and watching the Dallas Cowboys with his wife and children.

Help Us Remain #FootFirst!
We’re continuing our crowdsourcing campaign, seeking foot and ankle surgical photos from students, residents, candidates, and Diplomates. Email footfirst@abfas.org with photos of you performing surgery or just hanging out with other DPMs. We’ll feature our favorites in our publications and on social media!
For some ABFAS Diplomates and their loved ones, a commitment to foot and ankle surgery just seems to be in the blood. Whether it’s childhood dreams of one day performing surgery, practicing alongside their parents and siblings, or even simply introducing a new generation to the profession, for these Diplomates… it’s a family affair.

A few years back, Timothy Mineo, DPM, D.ABFAS, had an assistant for a day at his practice in Portland, Oregon: his six-year-old son Tristan. Tristan spent some of his summer break with Dad at work to help assist in the office. Tristan’s favorite job? Shredding paper and wearing scrubs, which he called grown-up pajamas. Tristan is now ten and aspires to go into medicine like his dad.
The Mineos aren’t the only father-son duo in the spotlight, however. Throughout his career, Bradley P. Abicht, DPM, D.ABFAS, has had the unique opportunity to provide patient care in La Crosse, Wisconsin alongside his father, Nurse Anesthetist Paul Abicht, CRNA. Here, Dr. Abicht (left) performs a peroneal tendon repair on a patient’s lateral ankle, while the elder Abicht (right), at the head of the table, provides anesthesia and safely monitors the patient.

Podiatry runs in the family for the Godoys! Here, Irma Godoy, DPM, (left) poses with her daughter Johanna Godoy, DPM, D.ABFAS, to celebrate their simultaneous 2005 graduation from New York College of Podiatric Medicine— the very first mother-daughter team that can make that claim. In this second photo, Johanna, at right, performs an ankle and subtalar joint fusion for a charcot ankle deformity with her sister, Heidi Godoy, DPM. All three Godoys practice in Wayne, New Jersey.

Medicine was an early calling for Robert J. Toomey IIII, DPM, D.ABFAS—in third grade, he even trick-or-treated as a surgeon! Dr. Toomey is all grown up now and is currently section chief of podiatric surgery at his hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. At right, Dr. Toomey finalizes the fixation of an external fixator for a charcot reconstruction.

Newly Board Qualified and Board Certified DPMs
We welcome all newly ABFAS Board Qualified DPMs and congratulate new Diplomates. We admire your dedication to the field of foot and ankle surgery.
