Message from Incoming President Change is a fundamental fact of the reality we perceive around us and within us. Its factuality is unquestioned because it occurs every day and moment and is inextricably woven into our every experience no matter if we like it or not. It is a mode of being in the world that we live in that presents itself in a plurality of contexts, forms, degrees, or aspects. As pervasive as change is, it would be unrecognizable, much less immeasurable, if stability, constancy, laws, and universals were not equally fundamental to reality. It is because of such unchanging facts or principles of reality that we do not regard all change equally and place varying degrees of value or judgment upon them. So, why am I beginning the President’s Message with philosophical musings? Change has been a constant theme here at the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. In fact, our organization’s name is a recent change. We’ve made various changes to our exam administration. Some changes have occurred that are out of sight. ABFAS New Certification Process - Effective September 2020 The ABFAS board works continuously to review its certification process and as a result is announcing changes to the certification process effective in September 2020. While these changes don’t have a major impact on the types of examinations ABFAS will require for certification, the changes do impact the number of examinations necessary for board certification. The Board’s goals were to simplify the certification steps and save candidates time and money. Additionally, changes to the PGY 1 & 2 In-training (ITE) examinations will provide residency directors with additional knowledge of how their residents are progressing. Working with the ABFAS psychometrician over the last two years, the board has analyzed the impact of the CBPS exam on the ability to become qualified and certified. Upon statistical analysis, CBPS scoring trends show that the Board Qualification CBPS examinations were predictive of passing the Board

Certification examinations. This allows ABFAS to develop a new or 12 case CBPS examination for Board Qualification and eliminate the CBPS examination in Part II Board Certification. Case Review will be the sole examination requirement for Part II. The concept for changes in the ITE examinations arose in a meeting that the ABFAS Executive Director and psychometrician had with 15 residency program directors in December 2017. Discussions at the meeting centered on the ITE examinations and the directors’ preference to have the residents’ ABFAS ITE mirror the ABFAS Board Qualification examination experience. The ABFAS Board agreed to that recommendation and based on other discussions at the residency director meeting began exploring ways to make the ABFAS Board Qualification less expensive and time-consuming for the residents. Currently, residents in their final year of residency can take the ABFAS Board Qualification examination in the Spring of their final year. That way they know whether they will be Board Qualified at the end of residency. The new Board Qualification scenario will have residents take the Board Qualification examination series as their ITE in September of their final year – same timing as the current ITE. Any exam that they pass can count towards their Board Qualification exam (upon application and payment of qualification fee). If they do not pass, they still have the opportunity to retake the examination in the Spring, thus providing another chance to pass the qualification examinations before finishing their residency. This model of becoming qualified upon residency completion mirrors many allopathic medical fields. We realize that this is a lot to grasp so a quick summary: -PGY 1 & 2 - Separate didactic and CBPS exams for foot and RRA -Part I - Passing ITE in final residency year counts towards board qualification. New 12 Case Foot CBPS and 12 Case RRA CBPS examinations -Only ONE examination for Part II Certification – Case Review The Board will present these new concepts to the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards as soon as it’s able and will implement the changes in September 2020. Those who become board qualified prior to September 2020 will need to take the new CBPS examination to become certified after the May 2020 administration of the CBPS Part II examination. ABFAS will be providing more details regarding the new certification process on a regular basis. ABFAS Welcomes Newly Elected Officials Congratulations and welcome to the three new members of the AFBAS Board of Directors; Dr. Nicole A. Bauerly, DPM, Dr. Keith Jacobson, DPM (incumbent), and Dr. Michael VanPelt (incumbent). Drs. Jacobson and VanPelt were re-elected to second three-year terms, while Dr. Bauerly was elected to a new three-year term. Dr. Bauerly will be eligible to be nominated for re-election. All three members bring a vast wealth of knowledge and experience to our Board. Dr. Bauerly has been actively involved with ABFAS having served on various committees since 2015, serving on the Computer-based Patient Simulation (CBPS) Foot Examinations, Communications, and Credentials Committees. In addition, she has served on the Communications and Young Member Retention Committees of ACFAS and as an exam item writer with the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners. Locally, Dr. Bauerly is currently serving on the Minnesota Podiatric Medical Licensing Board (2012-present). She has also served on the Minnesota Podiatric Medical Association (2009-2012). Dr. VanPelt has volunteered with ABFAS since 2013. He has served on the ABFAS Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle CBPS Committee and is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association. He is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, and is the Medical Director of the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Service at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Our Board of Directors has elected new officers who started their terms on September 1, 2018. Danny Choung, DPM-President. Dr. Choung has served on several committees, including the Intraining Item Writing Committee, the Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery Oral Examination Committee, and the Credentials Committee. He currently is a member of the Reconstructive Rearfoot/ Ankle CBPS Committee and has also served as an oral examiner. Keith Jacobson, DPM-President-elect. Dr. Jacobson specializes in trauma and reconstruction of the foot and ankle in adults and children. Dr. Jacobson has served as an ABFAS oral examiner and chaired the Foot CBPS Examination Committee. He also served on the ACFAS Surgical Skills Committee while participating as a clinical instructor/lecturer for many of the College’s courses. William Adams, DPM-Secretary/Treasurer. Dr. Adams has been actively involved with ABFAS since 2007. He served as an oral examiner from 2007 to 2014 and has been on the Cognitive Examination Committee, Credentials Committee, and Foot CBPS Examination Committee. Matthew Williams, DPM-Immediate Past-President. Dr. Williams has been a member of the ABFAS Examinations Committee since 2005, served as chair of the Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery Oral Committee and was an oral examiner from 2004-2014. Dr. Williams actively participates in programs providing charity care for children in both stateside and overseas medical missions. Mindy Benton, DPM, ended her term as Immediate-Past President in August. ABFAS thanks Dr. Benton for her work with the Board. Dr. Benton has served on various ABFAS committees including the In-training Item Writing Committee, the Cognitive Examination Committee, and chaired the Board Certification Content Development Committee. Dr. Benton will continue to serve ABFAS as chair of the New Pathways/Case Review Committee. 6

2018 Michael L. Stone Award Recipients ABFAS awarded nine graduating students the 2018 Michael L. Stone, DPM Outstanding Professional Conduct Award. Each awardee, determined by the professors and fellow students at their respective podiatric medical colleges, is “the individual who exemplified the highest standard of professionalism, deportment, and ethics in their interactions with peers, professors, and staff.” The recipients receive a plaque and a cash award of $2,000 to be used at the student’s discretion. ABFAS presented the awards in February 2018 at the ABFAS annual meeting.
Caitlin Parrent - Arizona School of Podiatric Medicine at Midwestern University
Growing up on the isolated island of Sitka, Alaska, Caitlin Parrent gained an appreciation for a remote lifestyle. After experiencing the lack of medical care offered in her small hometown, she decided to return to Alaska to practice specialized medicine. After completing her undergraduate degree in biology, Caitlin accepted a position as a medical assistant in a podiatry office and quickly learned that podiatry was her specialty. While at the Arizona School of Podiatric Medicine at Midwestern University, Caitlin was elected to the Student National Podiatric Medical Association (SNPMA) as President, the American Association for Women Podiatrists (AAWP) as Vice President, her class secretary, the Student Ambassadors program, and is qualified by Pi Delta Honor Society. Caitlin has received multiple scholarships including the APMA Seward P. Nyman, DPM Memorial Scholarship, the APMA PICA Fund Scholarship, and the John R. Burdick International Medicine Rotation Scholarship, which will fund her medical mission trip to Guatemala.
Dylan Grau - Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine
Dylan Grau has devoted himself to academic pursuits which is evident by the honors he has received at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. These include: Phi Delta Honor Society, ACFAS Student Scholarship, APMA Educational Foundation Scholarship, Dean’s List, and President’s List. Dylan understands that research is vital to the practice of evidence-based medicine and he has participated in many research activities. He spearheaded two ACFAS student research projects while the president of the student ACFAS organization. These projects focused on the emerging advancements in the “Use of Infrared Fluorescence Imaging in Preventing Complications Associated with Amputations”. His research involvement also earned him the Bruce Weber Scholarship for Research in Podiatric Sports Medicine and Biomechanics. In addition to academics, Dylan is a leader, mentor, and role model, seen through his tutoring of fellow classmates in Physiology and Anatomy. Dylan is also routinely giving his time volunteering at various homeless foot screenings and community health fairs.
Lewis Kane - California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University (CSPM)
An early love for trail running and science led Lewis Kane to pursue a degree in exercise physiology at the University of Colorado Boulder. It was during this time that he had exposure to the field of podiatry, experiencing first-hand the consequences of injury and the long road to recovery after foot and ankle surgery. Thrilled to return to his hometown of Oakland, CA, for professional school, Lewis has spent his time at CSPM engaged in multiple extracurricular pursuits; he has been president of the school journal club, editor-in-chief of the school journal, and a tutor to underclassmen in several subjects. He has received multiple merit-based scholarships and is a member of the Epsilon chapter of Pi Delta. Ready to embark on his career in podiatry, Lewis intends to continue improving upon his own education while striving to foster a passion for continued learning in those around him.
Lindsey Hjelm - Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (DMU CPMS)
Lindsey Hjelm is a native of St. Paul, MN, and obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology with minors in Studio Art and Religion from Gustavus Adolphus College. Her interest in the lower extremity started after suffering a navicular stress fracture in high school that ultimately required surgery. While pursuing her studies in podiatric medicine, Lindsey has been proud to serve as 2018 Class President. She has excelled academically and been a recipient of multiple merit and leadership-based scholarships, including CPMS Student of the Year. She also has earned academic awards in Lower Limb Anatomy, General Anatomy, and Physiology at DMU’s Rite of Passage Ceremony and is a member of the Iota chapter of Pi Delta. Additionally, Lindsey was the recipient of DMU’s Outstanding Surgical TA award and scholarship. Her podiatric interests include various research projects, one of which she presented at the 2017 APMA National Conference where she also became the champion of the inaugural quiz bowl.

Rachelle Randall - Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS)
As a vocal contender in the podiatric research world, Rachelle Randall’s research entitled “Early Results of a U.S.-based Telehealth Program to Improve Diabetic Foot Outcomes in Haiti” received numerous accolades and several national awards. Rachelle has presented this research in multiple forums, including first place in the oral presentation category at the 2016 Midwest Biomedical Student Research Forum, as well as, first place at the 2016 RFUMS All School Research Consortium. Rachelle’s research was also selected for oral and poster presentations at several national conferences including APHA, ACFAS, and APMA. Rachelle has been very active in the school’s public/global health club and received the APHA Podiatric Health Student Leadership Award for her outstanding efforts. Since joining Scholl College, Rachelle has taken on leadership roles in various organizations including President of the Pi Delta National Honor Society Delta Chapter, President of the American Association of Women Podiatrists Scholl Chapter, Secretary of the American Public Health Association Scholl Chapter, and Scholl Class of 2018’s Representative to the Curriculum Committee.
Lauren Schnack - Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM)
Lauren Schnack earned a Master of Science degree in Medical Physiology prior to her enrollment at the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. While attending KSUCPM, Lauren pursued her research interests and became the lead author on the published review paper, “The Metabolic Syndrome and the Relevance of Nutrients for its Onset.” Lauren has been a Podiatric Medical Skills teaching assistant, a Simulated Patients Tutor, as well as a Gross Anatomy and Lower Anatomy tutor. She was selected by the teaching and administrative body to serve on two College of Podiatric Medicine committees along with a weekly internship at a private practice. Lauren pioneered the first KSUCPM Information Booth at the 101st City of Independence, Ohio, 2017 Home Days Celebration. Outside of podiatric medicine, Lauren’s interests include American Sign Language, basketball, birds, and martial arts.
Ethan Buhl - New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM)
Ethan Buhl became interested in and fully committed to a career in podiatry in his early years as an undergrad. As a student at NYCPM, Ethan achieved Top 5 ranking in his class while also participating in research, including an ACFAS research poster on the Masquelet Technique. Ethan served as Vice President of his class for the last three years of podiatry school and was Vice President of the ACFAS student organization during his third year. He tutored in several subjects, served as a student ambassador, participated in the Big Brother Big Sister Program at NYCPM, and served as a Lower Extremity Anatomy TA. Ethan also volunteered for the West Point Boot Fit, several athletic competitions, and as a member of the New York Cares Volunteer organization, where he served as a running guide for athletes with disabilities. Ethan was awarded the J.T. Tai scholarship, APMSA student scholarship, Pre-Clinical Merit scholarship and is a Pi Delta Honor Society Candidate. He looks forward to pursuing a podiatric career in a rural setting and aspires to teach as well.
John Martucci - Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM)
John Martucci has found great interest in the history and evolution of podiatric medicine and surgery in the United States. At TUSPM, he has enjoyed being Class President since his second year. His work as part of a class council has reinforced a passion for leadership, his colleagues, and podiatric medicine. The role has also emphasized the importance of fostering a professional and respectful demeanor with classmates, professors, and patients. John is forever thankful that his classmates have entrusted him with this opportunity each year. In addition, he has been honored with various scholarships at TUSPM, along with the APMSA Student of the Year Award at the APMA Annual Scientific Meeting in 2017. He looks to help continue the APMA’s goal of making podiatric medicine’s value known and appreciated across all of medicine.
Chandler Schermerhorn - Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine
Chandler Schermerhorn excelled academically throughout her time at Western University. She is a member of the Pi Delta Honor Society and received many academic awards and honors. Having been a collegiate athlete and receiving a BS in Health Science with emphasis in Podiatric Medicine, Chandler always knew she wanted to be a podiatrist. She was academically competitive, involved in community service, and took on many leadership roles. She served as a student ambassador, curriculum representative, and was invited to participate in the first-ever APMA Quiz Bowl in Nashville in 2017. Chandler has been active in many research opportunities and has presented at several conferences. She has also had the opportunity to work with the West LA VA, UCLA and her mentor, Dr. Paul Han. Chandler hopes to continue her pursuit of becoming a well-rounded resident and future physician.

ABFAS Examinations Passing Ratespients Board Qualification The board qualification exams are offered twice each year – spring and fall. Most spring exam takers are those in their final year of residency. Fall takers tend to be those who did not pass the previous spring’s exams. Because of this, the passing rates for fall exam takers are lower than those of spring. The charts also show first time takers. That group traditionally has higher passing rates in the spring exams. Also affecting passing rates this last year are those who are taking the exams in order to become board qualified before 2018 as their passing rates are lower than those who completed 3 year residency programs. Board Certification These graphs show all candidates who took the exam, regardless of whether they have passed case review. In the past, only those who passed case review could take CBPS. The board eliminated that requirement two years ago. Recertification Examinations The Recertification exams traditionally have a high passing rate. In 2018 the Foot Surgery Recertification passing rate was 97.9% (N=471) and the passing rate for RRA Surgery Recertification was 84% (N=117). The ABFAS Exam Preparation Task Force has undertaken several efforts to provide more study guide material including practice exams, so that candidates are better prepared for ABFAS examinations. This year’s Board Qualification and Board Certification documents, available on the ABFAS website, detail approaches in how to take the CBPS examination. We will soon have an instructional video to go along with Dr. John Venson’s informational video on CBPS. The Board Certification documents have samples of the types of documents to upload for Case Review, in addition to guidance on how to log cases into PLS. The ABFAS Board is committed to assisting those candidates taking our examinations.

New News! Study Guides This past summer, ABFAS released revised study guides for many of the Board certification examinations. The updated study guides include Foot Surgery didactic, RRA Surgery didactic, Foot Surgery recertification, and RRA Surgery recertification examinations. Candidates taking the Board Qualification Part I didactic exams, Diplomates who are preparing for the Recertification exams (Foot and/or RRA) and those who are preparing for their Self-Assessment exam are all encouraged to use the new updated study guides. ABFAS continues to offer tools to assist candidates to be familiar with, and be successful on, the CBPS exam. These include a video explaining tips and techniques and a CBPS practice exam. All of these study guides and practice exams can be found under Practice Exams on the Resources tab of ABFAS.org.. Certified Active, Retired from Active Podiatric Surgery Earlier this year, the ABFAS Board of Directors voted to add an additional status to address the issue of currently licensed and certified foot and ankle surgeons who are not actively practicing surgery. The new status provides: Certified Active, Retired from Active Podiatric Surgery: Engaged in the active practice of podiatry but no longer has an active foot and ankle surgical practice; has fulfilled all relevant exam requirements; maintains an active, unrestricted license; and holds current, active privileges at a hospital or surgery center. This category is open only to those who have recertified once, or any lifetime certificate members. While inactive from surgical practice, a member: a) must pay annual fees. b) may vote in ABFAS matters and/or elections. c) must successfully complete recertification or self-assessment requirements. Case Review Hospital Accreditation Rule In the Fall of 2017, ABFAS advised of a new policy requiring candidates to confirm the accreditation status of the facility(ies) in which they performed cases. After further consideration, the ABFAS Board of Directors has reversed this policy and has eliminated the facility accreditation requirement from the case review process. While ABFAS will no longer enforce this requirement, we recommend that you perform all your foot and ankle surgeries at accredited facilities. Verification of Surgical Privileges In order to become board certified, as well as a condition for maintenance of certification, ABFAS requires official documentation of active surgical privileges at either at a hospital or surgical center, consistent with the area of certification desired (Foot Surgery and/or Foot and Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery). To assist members with providing such documentation, ABFAS’ Board of Directors approved a sample template privileges letter that you can provide to your hospital/surgical center. To download the sample template privileges letter, go to ABFAS.org/privileges. The letter must be completed and signed by a medical staff representative and sent to ABFAS in order to meet the privileges documentation requirements. Once ABFAS receives the signed letter, we will update your record. You will be able to see the list of facilities on your online profile.
