A Message from the President The pandemic has been difficult for all of us. Quarantines and patient appointment cancellations have evolved into webinars, teleconferences, and telehealth visits. We now are accustomed to wearing masks during patient encounters and visits to the grocery store. Even our children have had to adapt to remote learning, sports being delayed or cancelled, and visiting with friends on social media or teleconference.

We are seeing some optimistic signs, of course. We are thrilled that DPMs and other medical professionals are beginning to receive vaccinations, and that many of our profession are able to participate in administering vaccines.

What a year of changes! Yet, 2020 also taught us all a lot about patience and that we do have the ability to adapt and survive in difficult times.

We have made changes here at ABFAS, as well. We temporarily reduced our annual membership fee to address COVID-19 economic effects. Our staff is working remotely, but still being responsive to your needs. Board and committee meetings are now virtual.

Unfortunately, we had to delay exams but have been able to add additional testing options to address the capacity issues at Pearson VUE testing centers. After several delays to the in-person process, we ultimately opted to move Case Review to a virtual platform, with volunteers throughout the country working from home to assist us in the process.

These changes are the earmarks of an ongoing evolution, and I do not know if things will ever return to our previous sense of “normal.” We must continue to push forward and learn how to be successful in our new normal. We at ABFAS will continue to serve our Diplomates and candidates—as evidenced by our evolution to the LEAD program of Continuous Certification, outlined in this issue—and will continue to be a credential the public can trust.

Lyndon Johnson said, “The noblest search is the search for excellence.” I believe in our process, our seasons, and the changes they bring. Our job is to embrace those changes and make this a season to continue our search for excellence, and to be our best, for you.

Pandemic Restrictions Spur Changes in ABFAS Operations Diplomate safety and continuity drive decision-making Like organizations and institutions the world over, ABFAS operations have evolved to meet the reality of COVID-19. We are grateful that, thanks to ABFAS officers and staff scrambling to mitigate the pandemic’s effects on ABFAS operations, we have successfully minimized what could have evolved into a dire situation.

Throughout the past year, ABFAS has undertaken numerous changes to its standard operating procedures, with two focused goals in mind: ensuring continuity of service and the safety of ABFAS volunteer leaders, candidates, residents, and staff.

Most immediately, in March 2020, Executive Director Kathy Kreiter, in response to the city of San Francisco’s lockdown orders, closed the ABFAS office in San Francisco as the staff immediately transitioned to working remotely from their homes. Prior to the city’s orders, staff had prepared contingency plans in case of closure, and had the technology in place. The staff adapted quickly, with the certification services staff in particular pivoting quickly to maintain its vital communications role.

As of this writing, these directives regarding staff and facilities remain in effect.

Recognizing the Pandemic’s Financial Impact Knowing that many in the profession faced financial difficulties this year, ABFAS reduced its 2020-21 annual fee by 30 percent for Diplomates and those board qualified. In addition, we waived all late fees and extended the annual fee payment due date.

Changes to ABFAS Examinations Much more complex? How to tackle the ongoing development of the ABFAS examinations.

ABFAS extends its thanks to the residents and candidates who practiced patience as the organization adjusted its schedule. While ABFAS’ solutions to address the pandemic’s impact on certification were no doubt imperfect, staff worked diligently to minimize disruption to residents and candidates as much as possible.

Didactic exam questions and CBPS cases are developed by Diplomates who volunteer on ABFAS committees. Traditionally, the committees work with staff at in-person meetings, but for the last year most of that work has been conducted remotely. Staff worked quickly to design several remote processes that ensured that exam content continued its development at a high standard of quality, all while keeping committee members and staff safe.

ABFAS canceled the Part II CBPS exam scheduled for May 2020 due to closures of Pearson VUE test centers, moving those candidates to September 2020 exam dates.

The pandemic also complicated the rollout of a number of significant changes to the examination program that were planned for Fall 2020. Changes included the new full-length In-training Exams (ITEs) for non-final year residents, Final-year In-training Exams to serve as the equivalent of the Board Qualification exams (if passed), and NEW CBPS exams that superseded the old Part I and Part II CBPS exams.

Because of reduced capacity at test centers, ABFAS added the option for first- and second-year residents to take the didactic ITEs online. ABFAS also offered additional exam dates for those taking final-year didactic ITEs and Part I didactic exams. This massive effort resulted in the opportunity for nearly all residents and candidates to take their exams last fall.

In the midst of all this change and the pandemic, staff also implemented a new exam registration system designed to support the administration of the new examinations. The end result was a registration system that is more intuitive and in line with candidates’ needs.

Changes to ABFAS Case Review Case Review typically transpires in April of each year, with more than 100 reviewers gathering in Denver. In 2020, ABFAS monitored the situation on an ongoing basis, seeking a window that would allow for safe travel and gathering. By August it became clear that no physical meeting could take place safely, so staff began the process of converting to an all-remote process, providing technology for reviewers and setting up document review procedures. Ultimately, ABFAS’ digital Case Review took place in October of 2020, with the 2021 review also scheduled for virtual completion.

With delays now applied to both the Part II CBPS exam and Case Review, ABFAS immediately extended to December 31, 2020 the board qualifications of those candidates whose status would have expired in August 2020. In addition, ABFAS assisted these candidates by providing letters to their hospitals, if necessary.

As a result of the schedule delays, in just three months during the Fall, ABFAS administered non-final-year ITEs, Final Year ITEs, Part I Didactic and NEW CBPS exams, Part II CBPS exams, and Case Review. ABFAS scored all these exams and released the results within a six-week period—while simultaneously opening registration for Spring 2021 exams.

Changes Continue in 2021 Pandemic changes to ABFAS exams and standard operating procedures have continued into 2021 with the cancellation of recertification and self-assessment exams for safety reasons. Staff worked to ensure that Diplomates in their final year of certification in 2021 could participate in the pilot of the new Longitudinal Education and Assessment for Diplomates (LEAD) Continuous Certification program to avoid a negative impact on their certification.

Conference Appearances, In-person and Virtual ABFAS’ regional and state society partners did an admirable job rising to the challenge of their own transitions to a digital environment. ABFAS continued to support our partners and had representatives at three events in 2020, with two events shifting to digital.

The two digital events included virtual booths for exhibitors, so in both circumstances, ABFAS staffers fielded questions from Diplomates and other DPMs about the certification process.

Stepping Up Pandemic allows ABFAS Diplomates and residents to flex their skill sets When ABFAS announced in its newsletter last year that multiple changes would be coming in 2020 and over the next few years, we had no idea how many changes would truly be thrust upon us—and on you. This past year since lockdown began has tested our residents, candidates, and Diplomates in more ways than any of us could ever plan. But as we have grown to expect from foot and ankle surgeons, so many of you have stepped forward to meet the need.

During the pandemic, especially in the early days, when conflicting information and the constant influx of patients caused a shortage in both staff and PPE in many hospitals around the nation, many of our surgeons volunteered to fill the gap—surgeons such as the fifteen residents including Sahar Zaidi, DPM, PGY-2 of Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, a hotspot of COVID-19 cases, who answered the call for volunteers on the COVID floors, working on Code teams, night shifts, and makeshift ICUs despite a lack of proper PPE and resources. Many team members even used makeshift gowns and ski goggles to protect themselves.

Unexpected Roles for Foot and Ankle Surgeons Though valued and necessary, the experiences of Dr. Zaidi and his colleagues are not unique.

Garret Melick and Joslin Seidel, podiatric surgery residents at Massachusetts’ Cambridge Health Alliance, volunteered and joined the first wave of hospitalist teams deployed to assist on the front lines of care. While their three-year program involves rotations in internal medicine, infectious disease, emergency medicine, radiology, anesthesiology, pathology, endocrinology, general surgery, and psychiatry, nothing could have prepared them for the reality of patient care during a pandemic.

Cambridge Health Alliance Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Program Director Harry Schneider, DPM, said of Melick’s and Seidel’s skilled and compassionate care, “And give credit to our exceptional residents; they have risen to the challenge. In these unprecedented times, they have been able to showcase the full range of their clinical skills and training.”

Schneider isn’t the only one to recognize the dividends that the broad medical training experience all ABFAS residents and Diplomates undergo has been able to offer hospitals and medical centers during the pandemic.

Kelly Lucas, DPM, whose ortho team at NYU Winthrop had been repurposed into a proning team, flipping intubated patients in order to increase oxygen intake, shared the following insights: “Very quickly my residents have learned how to hook up EKGs, manage A lines, central lines, foleys, chest tubes, etc. during these sometimes very complicated flips. I am so proud of them representing our profession on the front lines of our hospital. They are not only helping the patients who have fallen ill to this disease but have helped take this very physical stress off of our nursing staff.”

When hospitals in New York City were overwhelmed by not only the sheer number of cases and lack of supplies but also COVID-related deaths, ABFAS Diplomates and residents were once again called upon for their skills. At the Brooklyn Hospital Center, Dr. Joshua Rosenberg, a critical care doctor and chair of the hospital’s infection control committee, quickly welcomed ABFAS Diplomate Ovidio Falcone, DPM and resident Dr. Camille Kim, along with another of Falcone’s residents as reinforcements because of their skills “with knives and big needles,” along with a neurosurgery physical assistant, surgery residents, two cardiac catherization lab nurses, and a nurse anesthetist.

Together, this team with disparate backgrounds worked to deliver top-notch care and expand ICU capacity, succeeding in helping more patients than the ICU had ever handled before.

Breaking Barriers, Removing Labels As Dr. Joslin Seidel so aptly stated, “It is truly amazing to see everyone coming together to fight this virus. Barriers have been broken, labels have been removed, and our community is working together for the greater good! At the end of the day, we’re in this together and we all have a part to play.”

As our nation and world continue grappling with the ongoing grip of the novel coronavirus, we will continue to support and shine a light on the members of the ABFAS community who are courageously putting themselves on the front lines and working with other medical professionals to make a difference. If you have stories to share, particularly of those foot and ankle surgeons, residents, and podiatry students stepping up in hospitals and ICUs across the country, we want to hear about them!

LEADing the Way to Continuous Certification A major change in the way ABFAS maintains surgical certification will spell big benefits for Diplomates.

ABFAS is in the process of transitioning its ten-year Maintenance of Certification programs to a process of continuous certification based on a longitudinal assessment— a new process wherein Diplomates will answer a set number of questions per quarter and get immediate feedback on their performance. When the program goes live in 2022, ABFAS will replace its recertification and self-assessment examinations with the new program LEAD: Longitudinal Education and Assessment for Diplomates.

The ABFAS Board of Directors appointed a task force to work on this change in 2018 and anticipates implementation in 2022.

So, why the change? ABFAS’ mission is to protect public health. Prior to certification, we focus on ensuring high standards in foot and ankle surgery. Post-certification, we augment our mission by also supporting Diplomates in keeping their knowledge, judgement, and skills current over the course of their careers—and the LEAD program represents a powerful new tool to help ensure the continued success of board-certified foot and ankle surgeons. The public benefits by ABFAS Diplomates participating in LEAD. ABFAS’ desire to explore alternatives to the traditional, once-every-ten-year recertification and self-assessment examinations represents an exciting new method of keeping current on knowledge relevant to foot and ankle surgery and stems from recent trends in the recertification processes for member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Currently, ABFAS is engaged in the LEAD pilot program with about 500 participants. Upon completion of the pilot, all Diplomates, regardless of certification year, will participate in the new process starting in 2022. ABFAS staff will be in contact with all Diplomates over the next few months as we prepare everyone for the new program.

How Continuous Certification will Benefit Diplomates The program features several innovations designed to make certification easier for Diplomates:

• a continuous, self-paced online assessment instead of a traditional recertification or self-assessment examination

• a set number of questions to answer each quarter, anytime and from anyplace, using a computer, tablet, or smartphone—with no need to travel to a testing center

• instant feedback on questions including the correct answer, rationale, and references, enabling Diplomates to identify potential knowledge gaps

• an easy-to-understand standard demonstrating whether each Diplomate is keeping current on knowledge relevant to foot and ankle surgery

In addition to the new online continuous certification process, ABFAS will still require Diplomates to meet existing maintenance of certification requirements such as CE credits; an active valid, unrestricted podiatric license; and proof of hospital/surgical privileges. More information is forthcoming.

What Continuous Certification Means for Diplomates All ABFAS Diplomates will begin participating in the LEAD program in 2022 and will carry on with that participation during the ten years of their certification or self-assessment cycle.

Participation will not require excessive time commitment, and ABFAS has designed the program to provide flexibility for busy surgeons to engage…anytime and from anyplace.

For Diplomates with time-limited certificates (certified after 1990), full participation in the program will renew certification dates. For Diplomates with lifetime certificates (certified before 1991), full participation in the program will maintain active certified status.

The Concept of Continuous Certification Concepts behind the change center on promoting continuous, lifelong learning—changes we hope and trust will improve Diplomates’ experience of the certification process. Our aim is providing an assessment that is relevant to Diplomates’ practices that will incorporate principles of adult learning theory.

We’re also designing the program with an eye toward enhancing the validity of assessment results through continuous assessment, as well as improving relevance by providing feedback opportunities.

ABFAS Highlights for 2020 (and Part of 2021!)

ABFAS has seen a great deal of change in the past months, much of which is explored in these pages. The pandemic contributed to additional factors that prevented us from releasing a newsletter in 2020, so we’ll take the opportunity of this issue to share news and updates from both last year and the beginning of 2021.

ABFAS volunteer leaders and staff are duly proud of the work we have undertaken to minimize pandemic-related disruption to the certification process, but happily, not all the news we have to report from 2020 (and the first quarter of 2021) is directly related to the pandemic.

New Board Officers and Directors ABFAS conducted elections for three open Board of Directors positions in Spring 2020, announcing the results in May of that year. Two incumbents, Jeffery Giesking, DPM of Wisconsin and John Marcoux, DPM of Massachusetts, were re-elected to their second three-year terms. Joining the board for her first term is Katie Swanstrom, DPM of Washington. All three members have terms that began on September 1, 2020 and will end on August 31, 2023.

The ABFAS Board also elected its new officers for the 2020-21 term: President William Adams, DPM of Kentucky; President-elect Amberly Paradoa, DPM of Florida; and Jeffrey Giesking, DPM of Wisconsin. Keith Jacobson, DPM of Colorado has assumed the role of Immediate Past President.

An Updated Path to Certification In 2020, ABFAS streamlined the certification process with the twin goals of saving candidates’ time and money. Previously, ABFAS required that candidates pass a Part I Computer-based Patient Simulation (CBPS) exam and Part I Didactic exam to achieve board-qualified status, then pass a Part II CBPS exam and Case Review to reach board certification. In Fall 2020, ABFAS replaced the Part I CBPS exams with the NEW CBPS exams, one each for foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle (RRA). Candidates now must pass a Part I Didactic exam and NEW CBPS exam to become board qualified, then pass only Case Review to become board certified. Holding an active, valid, unrestricted podiatric license in the US or Canada as well as active surgical privileges at a hospital or surgical center are necessary for both board-qualified and board-certified status.

Board-qualified candidates pursuing certification who took the eight-case CBPS examination must take the NEW CBPS exam in addition to Case Review to become certified. The former Part I CBPS examination is not psychometrically equivalent to the NEW CBPS exam.

ABFAS In-training Examinations (ITEs) have evolved, as well. First and second-year residents now take separate foot surgery and RRA surgery didactic (80 items) and CBPS (8 cases exams).

In addition, ABFAS now offers a new benefit to residents: starting in Fall 2020 final-year residents who pass any individual Final-Year In-training Exam can now use that passing score for board qualification purposes after successfully completing residency and paying a board qualification fee. The changes are already reaping benefits for residents; in the Fall 2020 ITEs, 100 residents passed all four parts of both the foot and RRA surgery exams, and an additional 155 passed both parts of the foot surgery exam.

La Dolce Vita Paul Quintavalle, DPM retires after four decades of ABFAS service

A 1976 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (now TUSPM), Paul Quintavalle, Jr. completed his residency training in 1978 and achieved certification with the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (now ABFAS) in 1980. In addition to maintaining a successful private practice in New Jersey, Dr. Quintavalle was very active at TUSPM as both faculty and member of college committees.

Dr. Quintavalle started the residency program at West Jersey Hospital. He served as residency director for more than 25 years and continues to mentor trainees. He is well remembered for his “Carnac” comedy routines at residency graduation dinners.

Dr. Quintavalle has been a valuable member of the ABFAS community since 1980, when he started as a Case Reviewer. Since then, he has served ABFAS as a member and chair of multiple committees, including the Oral Exam Committee, Written Exam Committee, and Credentials Committee. Paul was elected to the ABPS Board of Directors in 1990 and again in 1993, eventually serving as President in 1995. Since then, he has continued to serve on the Examination Committee and Case Review Committee, among others.

Of course, living “la dolce vita” isn’t the same thing as “curriculum vitae.” Quintavalle has served as the director of two Boy Scout camps, first in in Roscoe, NY, then Pine Hill, NJ. He has authored three novels—Thought Process, Think Big, and Think Twice—that include themes of medicine, emerging technologies, family, sports, and intrigue.

Family has been key to Paul’s many successes. His wife Sharon and their four children Jodi, Beth, Lori, and Scott, along with their three grandchildren Brady, Allegra, and Riley, are never far from his thoughts. Paul is the ultimate family man, having traveled the East Coast to support his kids at soccer matches. He founded the girls’ soccer league of Haddonfield, NJ, then served as coach.

Soccer was a family affair, with all of the children participating. Dr. Quintavalle’s daughter Lori is now the head coach of the Haddonfield High School championship girls’ soccer team.

Paul has traveled extensively, but Italy remains at the top of his list. The Quintavalle name extends back to 469 AD. While visiting Venice in 2006, Sharon and Paul visited Quintavalle Island, named after St. Bernard Quintavalle, Paul’s ancestor and the first follower of St. Francis of Assisi. A true Renaissance man, Dr. Quintavalle’s preferred method of relaxing involves sitting at a table al fresco, with good friends and family, a plate of pasta, and a glass of fine, 90-point Italian red wine.

ABFAS thanks Dr. Quintavalle for his continuous and tireless service to ABPS/ABFAS over the past 40 years, and wishes him a long, healthy, and well-deserved retirement.

A Friendly Face for Diplomates and Colleagues Longtime ABFAS Staffer Carl Lawrence Retires

By Ginnie Yee As the ABFAS community may be aware, staff member Carl Lawrence retired from ABFAS in April 2020. Carl joined ABFAS in October 1993 and is the second-longest serving ABFAS employee.

Carl was born in Rockville Centre, New York. He served in the Navy from 1965-67, assigned to two ships off the coast of Vietnam during the war. He began working for Gulf Oil in New York City in 1965, then transferred to Pittsburgh in 1972, followed by Houston in 1980. After Gulf Oil was purchased by Chevron in 1985, he was relocated to San Ramon (near San Francisco) before taking an early retirement package in 1992.

For more than 20 years, Carl was an integral part of ABFAS, starting at the front desk and concluding his career as Credentialing Services Manager. During his tenure, Carl worked in several key areas such as verifications and processing certification documentation. Carl staffed an examination committee and proctored many examinations. He coordinated the Credentials Committee meetings to ensure that all cases were properly reviewed and was well-known by ABFAS committee members for his hospitality and thoughtfulness. Once Carl discovered a favorite food or beverage, he would have it waiting the next time the committee member came to the ABFAS office for a meeting.

The impression Carl made on the many candidates and Diplomates who have contacted ABFAS over the years is everlasting. This is evident in the number of physicians that have stopped by the ABFAS booth at ACFAS and APMA conferences, asking “Is Carl here? I want to say hello. I want to thank him for helping me.”

Among the staff, Carl was well-known for his stocked candy dish and for remembering birthdays and obscure national food holidays such as National Bagel Day—as well as holidays for donuts, chocolate chip cookies, and pie—days on which Carl would offer his colleagues the appropriate treats. Carl also had a knack for locating the most interesting Oreo flavors that most did not find in the grocery store: mint, s’mores, lemon, peanut butter, carrot cake, and caramel coconut, to name a few.

Carl had an unwavering commitment to the profession, and a loyalty to ABFAS’ vital role as a certifying organization. His long tenure is a testament to how much he cared for ABFAS and all its members and staff; he will be missed. The ABFAS Board and staff, past and present, congratulate Carl on a stellar career and wish him well in his retirement.

2020 Michael L. Stone Award Recipients ABFAS awarded nine graduating students the 2020 Michael L. Stone, DPM Outstanding Professional Conduct Award. Each awardee, determined by the professors and fellow students at their respective podiatric medical colleges, is “the individual who exemplifies the highest standard of professionalism, deportment, and ethics in their interactions with peers, professors, and staff.” The recipients receive a plaque and a cash award of $2,000 to be used at the student’s discretion. ABFAS presented the awards in February 2020 at the ABFAS annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

Matthew Greenblatt // Arizona School of Podiatric Medicine at Midwestern University Matthew Greenblatt is a native of North Potomac, Maryland and obtained his undergraduate degree in exercise science from Ithaca College. As a senior captain of his collegiate lacrosse team and two-time All-Conference Midfielder, Greenblatt endured numerous lower extremity injuries that led him to an interest in podiatric medicine. While at the Arizona School of Podiatric Medicine, Matthew co-authored numerous research projects and held leadership positions that included American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) Student President, Academy of Physicians in Wound Healing (APWH) Student Vice President, Podiatric Surgical Teaching Assistant, and Homeless Shelter Student Coordinator. He has been an active participant throughout the community, composing a shoe drive for various homeless shelters, educating runners at local shoe stores, and volunteering for the Special Olympics. In addition to receiving Pi Delta Honor Society recognition, Matthew has received the Midwestern Spirit of Service Scholarship as well as the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) student scholarship. Matthew strives to continue learning and perfecting his craft in his pursuit of becoming a foot and ankle surgeon.

Amanda Chao // Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine

Amanda Chao graduated from the University of Southern California in 2016 prior to entering Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. In addition to being top in her class academically, Chao is a dedicated member and leader in school organizations. She has served as a teaching assistant in gross and lower extremity anatomy and physiolog y, Vice President of the Podopediatrics Club, and residency fair committee chair. Chao has attended numerous professional conferences and workshops. She takes time out of academic rigor to be an active volunteer at numerous service events and homeless shelter clinics and served as an international volunteer at an orthopedics and rehabilitation clinic in Ho Minh City, Vietnam. Amanda is looking forward to having a positive impact on her community as a physician. Personal interests include bicycling, tennis, soccer, fishing, basketball, and traveling.

Rabeea Abbas // California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University Bay Area native Rabeea Abbas attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she double majored in applied mathematics and neurobiology. In podiatric medical school, Abbas participated in and led a multitude of research projects in immunology. She achieved publication of a paper in the National Foot and Ankle Review (NFAR) that focused on conservative treatment options for chronic lower extremity wounds. She served as an associative editor for NFAR and has held multiple leadership roles in school. Abbas dedicated time to providing care at clinics outside of school and has volunteered as a team leader at multiple scientific conferences targeting high school and middle school students. Rabeea is a member and Secretary of the Epsilon Chapter of the Pi Delta National Honor Society for podiatry, as well as an active member of the American Association for Women Podiatrists (AAWP) and American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). She is recipient of the 2019 Crimson Excellence Award.

Edee Renier // Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery

Edee Renier earned a bachelor’s degree in genetics from Iowa State University, where she focused her time working on vaccine development. She enjoys participating in research at DMU so much that she joined the three-year research track to study the interaction between Vitamin D and Charcot Neuroarthropathy. Her research has taken her to the 2019 APMA Conference and to the 2018 American Public Health Association (APHA) National Conference, where she was awarded APHA Podiatry Student of the Year. Additionally, Renier is the first podiatry student in history to win the Kathy J. Lyman Scholarship through the Polk County Medical Society in Iowa. While at DMU, Renier also received the Becky Stills Memorial Scholarship, APMA scholarship, and AAWP Scholarship. Her hobbies include public speaking with the Toastmasters International organization, traveling the world, and hiking. She looks forward to contributing to the podiatric medical field as a resident in the future.

Ryan Stone // Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science Ryan Stone earned his BS in vision science from the Michigan College of Optometry after completing his first year of the program through early admission. He then decided to withdraw from optometry school and pursue a surgical specialty. Ryan chose podiatry out of interest in restoring a patient’s physical functionality through both clinical and surgical intervention. Stone served as President of the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons (ASPS) Student Club at Scholl, where he also served as a volunteer clinical and lower extremity anatomy tutor. During his podiatry school tenure, he has received multiple merit-based scholarships and is a member of Pi Delta National Honor Society.

Outside of podiatric medicine, Ryan participates in outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, boating, and skiing.

He also enjoys attending sporting events and participated in intramural basketball and flag football. Ultimately, Stone wishes to complete a foot and ankle reconstructive fellowship and work in an academic environment where he can participate in research to further advance the profession.

Natasha Bhagat // Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine

Natasha Bhagat became interested in pursuing a podiatric career after obtaining a BS in human nutrition. As a KSUCPM student, Natasha was committed to sustaining a high academic standing alongside participating in extracurriculars. She has served as President of the ACFAS Student Club at Kent State, Director of Clinical Affairs of the Podiatric Association for Diabetes, and a Student Ambassador. Natasha participated in research and presented her studies twice at the ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference. She placed first in the 2018 Student Competition for her poster on “A Novel Technique for Percutaneous Harvest of Calcaneal Autograft: Evaluation of Complications and the Effect on 1st MPJ and Lapidus Arthrodesis.” Bhagat has been on the Dean’s List throughout school and is a member of Pi Delta Honor Society. Outside of podiatry, her interests include weightlifting and kickboxing. Natasha hopes to become a strong leader in the podiatric field by making research advancements while allowing patients the ability to have active lifestyles.

Karla De La Mata // New York College of Podiatric Medicine During her junior year at East Stroudsburg University, Karla De La Mata quickly grasped the potential success and joy that joining the podiatric profession would bring. She was awarded membership in the Pi Delta Honor Society for maintaining her academic standing while participating in numerous extracurriculars.

Enthusiastically, she has served as NYCPM’s Student Ambassador, Editor of the Podiatric Medical Review Journal, and Secretary of the American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association (APMSA). Realizing the importance of advancing the field of podiatry through research, Karla became active in research projects; one project examined the relationship between pH and wound healing. Reflecting as she graduates to Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, De La Mata feels privileged and is grateful to have worked with many exceptional organizations and to have learned from many top professionals, physicians, and peers. She plans to continue promoting and giving back to the podiatric profession, exemplifying excellence in practice and collaborative research, and hopefully one day through teaching.

Andrea Batra // Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine

Andrea is a native of Mercer Island, Washington and obtained her degree in psychology from the University of Washington. She worked as a recruiter in the tech industry and volunteered with Operation Smile before making the decision to pursue a career in medicine. Batra’s passion for podiatry began during her post-baccalaureate program after her father, an anesthesiologist, suggested she shadow a podiatric surgeon. During her time at TUSPM, she has matured both academically and personally, and has excelled in her studies as a result. Batra served as class liaison for multiple courses, as President of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) student chapter, and as Secretary and tutor for the Stirling Harford DiPrimio Anatomical Honor Society. Andrea has also had the opportunity to serve as Director of Education and Funding for the budding FootAid international podiatric philanthropy and hopes to serve patients at home and internationally to improve both fitness and health literacy.

Emily Shibata // Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine

Emily Shibata has devoted her academic career at Western University to engaging in multiple leadership and outreach positions that have enabled her to become an advocate for her fellow students and the community. Shibata’s interests in promoting healthcare activism began in college where she obtained her undergraduate degree in public health sciences from the University of California, Irvine. She is a member of the Pi Delta Honor Society and has received awards highlighting her academic achievements and character.

Emily served as Vice President of the founding student chapter of the AAWP and has represented Western University at nationwide podiatric conferences. Emily was involved in several research projects and was a senior editor for Extremitas: The Journal of Lower Limb Medicine, in which she published several articles.

Emily has volunteered at community service events that include foot screenings, information sessions, and women’s shelters. She aspires to teach and pursue a career centered on advocacy and outreach.

ABFAS Examinations Passing Rates Spring 2020 Board Qualification Exams The Spring Part I Foot Surgery Didactic exam had a 72 percent pass rate and the Part I Foot Surgery CBPS exam had a 79 percent pass rate. The pass rates for the Part I RRA Surgery Didactic exam and Part I RRA Surgery CBPS exam were 63 and 66 percent, respectively.

Spring 2020 Board Certification Exams With the impact of COVID-19, ABFAS delayed by several months the 2020 Part II exams ABFAS administered the NEW CBPS exams to enrollees for the Part II Surgery CBPS exams.

The new takers’ pass rate for NEW Foot Surgery CBPS was 72 percent and the first-time takers’ pass rate for NEW RRA Surgery CBPS was 67 percent.

Spring Part II Foot Surgery Case Review pass rates were 58 percent for first-time candidates, while first-time candidates for Part II RRA Surgery Case Review had a 63 percent pass rate.

Spring 2020 Recertification Exams ABFAS Recertification exams continue to have a high pass rate among first-time takers, with Foot Surgery at 92 percent and RRA Surgery at 80 percent. Diplomates who are unsuccessful at this exam usually pass on their second try. As Diplomates have three years to attempt to pass the recertification exams, at the end of the three-year period, the overall passing rate is over 99 percent for both Foot Surgery Recertification and RRA Surgery Recertification.

Fall 2020 Board Qualification Exams The majority of examinees for the Fall ABFAS exams are repeat examinees who have previously taken the exams and failed.

The pass rate for the Part I Foot Surgery Didactic exam was 45 percent and the Part I RRA Surgery Didactic exam pass rate was 21 percent.

With the end of the Part I and Part II CBPS exams, candidates took the NEW CBPS exams in Fall 2020. The total pass rate for the NEW Foot Surgery CBPS exam was 69 percent and the NEW RRA Surgery CBPS exam pass rate was 42 percent.
