Communities Built for Children

Have you ever heard of the phrase, “little pitchers have big ears?” The adults in my childhood would recite this phrase when the conversation became inappropriate for a child. My parents deliberately and thoughtfully created a safe and age-appropriate community around me to protect my childhood and development into a responsible individual. Communities are responsible for the most vulnerable – children.

Communities of farmers and ranchers across the nation are busily preparing for harvest and cooler weather. Critical tasks related to this time of the year include caring for crops and livestock, managing equipment and land, mending fences, cultivating the land, fertilizing, rotating crops, moving herds, evaluating the past year, and preparing for next year. In Linden, California, Aaron’s hometown, “We are known for two commodities… cherries and walnuts. We produce the best quality in these two crops because of our cool summer evenings in Linden. In July and August, we irrigate the orchards and prepare for the fall harvest,” explained Albert DalPorto, owner of Albert DalPorto Farms, Inc. in Linden. Albert continues, “We will start the walnut harvest at the end of September and continue until the end of October. Our walnuts will be shipped all over the world beginning in early October for the world to enjoy. When we wrap up the walnut harvest, we button up the elds for dormancy and pray that we have enough rain water over the winter to have a beautiful spring that will allow us to bring Linden cherries and walnuts to you. Our cherries and walnuts are in every grocery retail store in the United States.”

There is something else that Linden, California is known for. Albert goes on to say, “We are a tight community that has 4th, 5th, and 6th generations of farming families. The dedication and hard work that the Linden Farmers put into their crops are amazing. You will see someone going to their eld at 5 am and will see them again at 5 pm working diligently to grow a beautiful cherry and walnut.” Linden Farmers meet daily to share their tasks, the progress of their harvest, as well as talk about what Aaron did last night on the eld. Did you see that catch he made? Did you see how hard he hit that home run? Did you see him playing catch with the kids? As Albert stated, ”The Linden community is very proud of Aaron Judge as a New York Yankee, but we are even more proud of him as a person.”

Adversity Can Lead to Opportunity

During basketball season my junior year in high school, I went up for a rebound and came down on the ground landing on my elbow. It hurt. It hurt a lot. The adrenaline of the game and my competitive spirit kept me in the game despite the pain. I iced it that night and the next day, but it still hurt. I told myself that sometimes things hurt but you just gotta keep going.

Spring baseball came around, and when I took the mound to pitch, the ball had no velo, (yes, I pitched in high school), and my arm still hurt a lot. My mom took me to the doctor, and x-rays showed that the elbow was shattered. I was out of baseball for my junior season. It was just my luck that I was sitting on the bench during the exact year that baseball scouts visit to see if you have potential for college programs or professional baseball. Sitting out that season made me hungry to get out there again.

Trying to make up for that spring, I went to every camp I could, including one at Fresno State where I met Coach Batesole. He saw my potential and helped me understand how rare of an opportunity it is to play for a college program. Fresno recruited me to play for the Bulldogs on a scholarship. Getting drafted had been my dream, but the elbow had created a barrier to that dream. College would now be my next step.

I did get drafted out of Linden High School in the 31st round the next year, but after talking to my educator parents, baseball coaches, and scouts I started to see that the opportunity to play for Fresno State while getting my education was something that could change my trajectory.

2023 has brought me a lot of good fortune but also some adversity. Although my injuries were diagnosed quickly and the treatment plan came together quickly, but just like in high school, I am hungry to be on the eld. The elbow injury taught me that there are a lot of paths that get you to your dream, and if there is an obstacle in your path, you may have to nd a new path. Listen to those around you, get advice, and remember there is a bigger picture. It may have taken longer to get drafted, but with the move up from the 31st round, other doors opened for me.

2020.

Adversity hits us all at different points in our lives. My ALL RISE Foundation works to help youth to nd pathways to overcome their adversity by supporting and continuing to develop programs that align with our comprehensive components (see below). When we are sitting behind a barrier to our success, it is dif cult to see around it. But if we stay patient and focused and we speak with others, we will nd a path to move farther than we thought possible.

Continued from front page

It is obvious to me that our community of farmers and ranchers has had a signi cant impact on the establishment of the Aaron Judge ALL RISE Foundation. Growing up in a community of hard workers, a family environment, supporting individuals, traditional events, and good neighbors, has in uenced Aaron to create a mission that re ects many of our friends and neighbors. In the last couple months, the Foundation has been involved in a host of events to build responsible citizens.

projects or programs that align with our mission statement and address our comprehensive components.

• 200 youth attended the Aaron Judge Baseball ProCamp held on July 21 at Fordham University in Bronx, NY.

• 112 students participated in our inaugural ALL RISE Book Club launched in July. Aaron will send book club members certi cates of completion and cool bookmarks.

• 155 students and adult mentors attended the #ALLRISE2HELP events in Oakland A’s and Los Angeles Angels’ stadiums. Aaron spoke to the group about using social media platforms in a responsible manner.

Being Positive

What better way to enjoy your summer break than watching a ballgame…and hanging out with a ve-time MLB All-Star? This summer, young fans of the New York Yankees enjoyed a special opportunity to meet Aaron Judge and his mom, Patty, at two meet-and-greet events hosted by the Aaron Judge ALL RISE Foundation and the nonpro t organization Digital4Good x #ICANHELP.

Before facing off against the Oakland A’s in June and the Los Angeles Angels in July, the Yankees right elder spoke to students about the importance of spreading positivity on social media and addressing negativity.

Amidst the widespread toxicity that can be found online, Aaron chooses to focus on the positive. "I can see some pretty mean stuff...from people I don't know. That can get to me a little if I let it,” he shared. “So that's why I try to look at all the positive things I can on there—whether it's seeing a cool message about somebody helping an elderly lady cross the street, or somebody helping somebody in the classroom. Little positive stuff like that is what I really try to focus on to stay positive in a world that can be pretty negative at times."

When students encounter mean-spirited content on social media, Aaron’s advice is to shoot the bully a quick, yet

respectful message telling them to stop. If they see someone having a bad day, check in on the person being targeted and offer support. "Little things like that…are really going to change social media and really change the world,” Aaron encouraged students. “It starts with you guys here...you guys are the future."

Patty Judge joined her son in meeting and greeting students at both events. Not only did she give valuable advice about promoting online positivity, she also shared memories of Aaron’s pre-MLB days. According to Patty, Aaron showed signs of being a talented athlete from the very beginning. As a P.E. teacher, she was quick to recognize his good hand-eye coordination. “I didn't know that he was going to be a pro, but I knew that he had a gift.”

After a round of group photos with Aaron, the students headed off to their seats to watch him in action on the eld—and those who attended the event in Oakland got to witness the Yankees pitching a perfect game!

Digital4Good x #ICANHELP is a nonpro t organization committed to empowering students to delete negativity on social media. Follow @icanhelpof cial on social media and visit www.icanhelp.net to learn more about how you can advocate for social responsibility and digital citizenship.
