Beth is top of the chops! A FEMALE loggersports athlete from Southport who wants to show the world that it’s ‘not just a sport for men’ will take part in the first ever British Women’s Championship. Beth Parker, from Crossens, will compete against seven female athletes from across the UK in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS British Women’s Championship at the Royal Three Counties Show in Malvern on Friday (June 17). The 39-year-old will have to use her axe and saw skills in three challenging disciplines; Stock Saw, Single Buck and Underhand Chop. Each discipline will see the athletes slice and chop their way through large logs in seconds using a combin-

ation of axes, two-metre crosscut saws and high-powered chainsaws, all requiring high levels of power, precision and endurance to succeed. Competitors win maximum points for the fastest time, with the athlete accumulating the most points crowned the best female TIMBERSPORTS athlete in Great Britain. After seeing the TIMBERSPORTS World Championships on Eurosport in 2015, Beth was instantly hooked. She said: “I am determined to put on as good a performance as I can. All the women taking part want to show people that it’s not just a sport for men and we now have a solid foundation for more women in GB to take part in the future.”
Report by Henry James SEFTON Council chiefs have asked neighbouring local authorities for help with bin collections - as residents in parts of the borough have now been waiting for 10 weeks for their green waste to be emptied. The Champion has seen an email sent to staff at the Waste and Recycling Service at Halton Council which states: “Sefton Council have asked for some support from Halton and other local authorities: collecting their green waste.” According to the email, they would schedule additional collections over a number of Saturdays. Collections would be completed by Halton Council crews in Halton Borough Council vehicles but tipped at a designated facility in the Liverpool area. Collections would take place in the south Sefton area. Interested people would be paid at an enhanced rate (1.5) but would be

required to work full days. The Champion understands that Sefton refuse collectors are unhappy about this policy. Sefton Council bosses said they were exploring a ‘number of solutions’ and nothing had been agreed yet. Dukes Ward Cllr John Pugh, the Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Sefton Council, has called for an audit of complaints about the issue. He said: “It is important too that calls to the council by residents get answered.” A spokesperson for Sefton Council responded: “We are making progress in clearing the backlog of green bins thanks to the huge
efforts being put in by our collection teams and the extra resources we have made available. “We know that while some areas will have now received collection of their green bin, others may still be awaiting collection but we are working on clearing this backlog as quickly as we can. “We are exploring a number of solutions to identify extra resources to collect green bins. “We would like again to thank people in Sefton who have been incredibly patient throughout these operational difficulties and we ask them to leave their bin out for collection.”
