LIVING IN LAS VEGAS IN DECEMBER A Guide for 99FSS Families & Airmen

Welcome to December in Las Vegas, where the holiday spirit is alive and well! As the year winds down, it’s the perfect time to embrace the festive season, connect with friends, and reflect on the past year. Here’s your guide to making the most of this magical month in our vibrant city.

Holiday Safety First

The holiday season is a time for joy and celebration, but it’s also important to stay safe. Whether you’re out and about

enjoying the festivities or traveling to visit loved ones, always keep safety in mind. Ensure your home is secure if you’re leaving town, and be cautious on the roads, especially during late-night travels. Remember, it’s better to arrive late than not at all. Keep an eye out for your neighbors too, and report any unusual activity to base security.

Connect and Include

The holidays can be a tough time for some, especially those who are away from family. Reach out to your fellow airmen and neighbors—invite them to join in your celebrations or simply spend time together. Inclusion is key to building a

strong, supportive community. Whether it’s a potluck dinner, a game night, or just a casual get-together, these small gestures can make a big difference in someone’s holiday season.

Relax and Unwind

After a year of hard work and dedication, it’s essential to take some time to relax and unwind. Las Vegas offers plenty of opportunities to do just that.

Take a stroll through the beautifully decorated streets and enjoy the holiday lights. Visit a local spa for a day of pampering or enjoy a peaceful hike at Red Rock Canyon. The cooler December weather is perfect for outdoor activities, so make the most of it.

Plan for the Future

As we enjoy the present, it’s also a great time to start planning for the future. Set aside some quiet moments to reflect on your achievements over the past

year and set goals for the year ahead. Whether it’s career aspirations, personal growth, or new hobbies, having a plan can help you stay motivated and focused. The 99FSS offers a variety of resources and programs to support your development, so be sure to take advantage of them.

Embrace the Festivities

Las Vegas is brimming with holiday activities this December. From ice skating at the Cosmopolitan Ice Rink to the Glittering Lights at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss out on the local holiday markets and festive performances that add a unique charm to the season. Be sure to mark your calendar for the 99FSS Frost Fest on December 6th—it’s the holiday event of the year and perfect for families and airmen alike.

Join the Celebration

The holiday season is all about coming together and making memories. So, join us at all our events and help us “Spark the Mission” at Nellis AFB.

Your participation and enthusiasm are what make our community so special. Let’s make this December a month to remember, filled with joy, laughter, and togetherness.

FSS Spotlight

What do you like most about working at Nellis Air Force Base?

Nellis has numerous unique missions, and my small role in ensuring family readiness for those families and the members who serve is rewarding.

What’s the interesting things about the facility you are working at that not a lot of people know about?

I have the privilege of working with state education officials and lawmakers to advocate for policies that address the specific challenges faced by military families, such as frequent relocations, deployments, and school transfers. Additionally, I serve as the state lead for the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. In this role, I ensure that local education agencies adhere to this compact, providing consistent enrollment, placement, and graduation rules for military students across state lines.

Do you have any messages for the new recruits at the base?

I am here to assist you and your family in navigating the educational landscape in Clark County. With many school choice options, all with varying deadlines and lottery periods, I encourage all newly assigned personnel to connect with me to ensure they have all the information needed to make the best decision for their student(s).

Thank you so much!

The Warrior Fitness Center was more than a gym—it was a place of healing and empowerment.

a Military Spouse /a Survivor / a WFC member’s story

savedfitnessmy life

Hi, my name is Tieia Middleton. As a proud military spouse, I’ve faced unique challenges alongside my husband’s 21 years of service, adapting to the ups and downs of military life with resilience. Yet, my path has also involved personal battles that I never anticipated. I endured eight long years of severe health issues, trapped in a cycle of over 23 daily medications, including an oral chemotherapy drug. These treatments drained my energy and left me feeling isolated, while my mental health deteriorated under the weight of depression. Some doctors doubted I’d reach my 40th birthday. I felt like I was losing not only my health but my sense of self.

In 2019, a turning point arrived. I realized that if I wanted to reclaim my life, I needed to return to something I had once loved: fitness. The thought of going back to the gym was intimidating, so I began my journey at the Warrior Fitness Center (WFC) on Nellis Air Force Base. The fitness center, a beacon for active-duty members, families, and retirees, became my sanctuary. I connected with a trainer there, someone who initially doubted I’d make it through even a warm-up. With my pale, grayish skin tone as a testament to my struggles, I seemed too frail. But I pushed through that first workout, surprising both my trainer and myself.

The Warrior Fitness Center was more than a gym—it was a place of healing and empowerment. Through lifting weights and committing to 5-6 days a week, I found renewed purpose and strength. The community at the center, surrounded by people who understood resilience, inspired me to keep going. Day by day, I transformed, not just physically, but mentally. Now, at 51, I am in the best shape of my

life and embarking on a new journey into bodybuilding. Fitness has shown me that reclaiming one’s power is as much about mental strength as physical health.

My journey proves that change is possible, no matter the odds. The Warrior Fitness Center has given me hope and a new perspective, and I believe it can do the same for others. I encourage anyone on Nellis Air Force Base, especially those feeling lost or facing their own challenges, to discover what this center has to offer. The Warrior Fitness Center isn’t just a gym; it’s a place where strength, community, and resilience come together to inspire and uplift.
